910 KINA Saturday Morning Show lineup

On Monday, August 12 through Wednesday, August 14, Circle C Paving and Construction, LLC of Goddard, Kansas will continue the City of Salina’s annual chip seal project by placing a fog seal. The schedule is as follows, weather permitting:


Fog sealing is a method of sealing the new pavement surface which prolongs the serviceability of streets. Combined with joint and crack sealing, this surface treatment program extends the service life of pavement.

Owners and occupants along residential streets will be notified ahead of time that their streets will be closed to traffic while the work is being completed. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the construction altogether and find alternate routes to their destinations while the work is occurring.

The $327,900 project is a major component of the City of Salina’s 2024 $5.9 million maintenance capital improvement program.&nbsp;

City of Salina continues annual chip seal project — North Salina

Thursday evening, August 8, a 49-year-old Salina woman called the Salina Police Department (SPD) and reported that someone she knew allegedly hit her.

SPD Capt. James Feldman said when officers arrived in the 1000 block fo Noble Court, the victim reported that her partner, 42-year-old Sean Carico of Salina, allegedly punched her in the face multiple times and also strangled her.

"She did have multiple face injuries," Feldman said. "He [Carico] was taken into custody. While the officers were attempting to walk him to the vehicle, Carico attempted to pull away from them. He was controlled and taken to jail." 

SPD officers booked Carico into the Saline County Jail on charges of aggravated domestic battery and interference with law enforcement.

DOWNS - Ian Kresin, one of the all-time greats from Lakeside High football, garnered rave reviews, even from rivals.

“He's such a good running back," Thunder Ridge quarterback Mason Baker said. "In college, they say all the great running backs make one move and get vertical, Ian did just that. I’ve always known him as a physical running back; he hits like a truck, and he’s fast.”

Kresin, a 5-foot-9 roadrunner-type with electrifying speed, will be lacing his cleats this fall for Kansas Wesleyan.

“They are getting a very hard-working back. I’ve seen him at all powerlifting meets, and he's very determined to win,” said Baker, bound for Evangel College this fall. “I can tell he has heart and passion for the game, so he will do great.”

That respect went both ways, and persists as the former high school rivals depart for the same college conference.

“He was an excellent quarterback,” Kresin said of Baker. “He can run, and he can run well.”

Kresin reports Friday as his college football career begins for the purple-clad Coyotes.

“I always visioned myself playing at the highest level,” Kresin said. “If you believe you can, you could have a possibility. But if you know you can then you will. It’s a mental sport. That’s what separates players.”

While Kresin received plenty of praise from opponents, those sentiments were echoed by those he shared a locker room with throughout high school.

“He's a very developed freshman, they will be very happy with him from the first day,” Knight teammate Gabe Smith said. “He’ll work as hard as possible to make sure he’s on the field.”

“KWU is getting the most determined and level-headed running back they have probably ever gotten,” Lakeside senior quarterback Kaden McCoy said. “Ian is a very good football player and he shows it. Look at the stats and highlights, he will always push you as a player to get better. He was a very good team player also. They will be amazed by what he can do on the field, Lakeside was only the beginning for him.”

In 36 games as a Knight, Kresin rushed a beastly 518 times for 3,748 yards and 61 touchdowns, racking up 100 yards or more in nearly half (16) of those games. 

During his senior senior season, Kresin muscled his way to 1,448 yards, 32 TDs and seven 100-yard outings.

“When I watched him play, he was always a very smart running back that could make a good play out of nothing,” senior skill player Reece Remus said. “He gives 110 percent effort on every play.”

Through it all, Kresin credited his teammates, and the players around him for his on-field successes.

“It was amazing," he said. "The amount of support from my family and coaches was incredible, but most importantly, it came from the team. The energy and brotherhood that comes from small-town sports is something I have never seen before. I was closer to my team than anybody else, and that’s because we did everything together, it was more than just a team.”

Kresin was more than just a player who wore #2.

“Ian’s one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever met,"&nbsp;sophomore quarterback Eli Schmitt said. "I lifted weights with him all summer and he never cuts himself short. He's good at lifting people up and not tearing them down so he’s a good locker room presence. Every day I’m with him he has a positive attitude even if he might not want to all the time.”

“Ian has a strong sense of leadership and always points his teammates in the correct direction,” senior lineman Gage Gradig said. “He has a hard work ethic, it doesn’t matter if it’s during practice, in the weight room or when he’s playing a game, he gives it his all. On the field, he’s a great teammate who communicates with his teammates to help solve problems and improve the offense. He is even exceptional off the field with his ability to bond with his team and create a chemistry.”

Kresin helped the Knights win 22 games in his career, including a 6-3 campaign this past year.

“I've learned that finding the want and drive to do the same thing every day is hard,” Kresin said. “But that’s what separates others. We were still a pretty young team, so we had to find a groove that made us be the best team we can be.”

The more people you speak to around the Lakeside-Downs program, the more the praise continues.

“Hard-working, smart, agile, leader, strong and very athletic. Full package,” Smith said of Kresin. “He will help anyone with anything no matter if it’s a freshman all the way to a senior. You have a question ask him, he’s the one who got me in the weight room.”

“When he gets to the open field, he runs like he’s mad but is still composed enough to make quick decisions,” Gradig said. “And the only thing that is on his mind is for him to make it across the pylons.”

“He was able to motivate anyone around him and even make everyone around him better,” Remus said.

“Success is the best version of yourself you can,” said Kresin, who also generated nearly 200 tackles, 23 tackles for loss and eight sacks in his career. “Success is looking back and saying I did the best I could do.”

Kresin’s best the past four years has earned him a chance to play on Saturday’s.

“It means a lot. It’s always been a goal in my life. And I appreciate everyone who helped make that happen,” Kresin said. “It took a lot of self-discipline, a lot of times the only one to push you is yourself. So I got pretty comfortable with pushing myself,”

Kresin’s team-first philosophy showed when asked what his numbers meant to him.

“Very little. I would much rather take a win than stats,” Kresin said. “However, I do thank my teammates for helping me reach those numbers.”

“With Ian, you could call a play to the right and block someone and turn around and he made three cutbacks and is running in the end zone,” Smith said with a chuckle. “One time I remember him running a guy over on the sideline and that kid may have flown three feet.”

“He was definitely one of the toughest I’ve played, his play style was different from others and he had speed and strength,” Baker said. “I’ve faced a lot of great running backs and he is definitely up there.”

Kresin said he’s honored to represent Lakeside at the next level.

“I'm very ready to take the challenge, I’m ready to have something to chase, something to get me up in the morning," Kresin concluded. I want to show that it doesn’t matter if you’re from a small town, you're only able to do what you believe you can do.”

 The Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland invites the community to celebrate National S’mores Day this Saturday, August 10. The event will take place from 2-4 p.m. at the Flywheels/Yesteryear Museum, located at 1100 W Diamond Drive in Salina.&nbsp;

Attendees can enjoy s’mores, make friendship bracelets, and meet new Girl Scout friends. The event is free and open to the public, but parents or caregivers must accompany children.

Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland invites public to 'National S'mores Day' Aug. 10

Saline County and the City of Salina are seeking public input at a public open house for initial concepts aimed at reimagining the government campus site in downtown Salina.

Together the city and county are in the midst of evaluating the government buildings with the assistance of the consultant group TreanorHL. One of the primary goals for this project is to create a cohesive and efficient campus master plan. To do this, community engagement and input play a large role in reviewing initial design concepts to ensure the final recommendation reflects the future vision of the campus.

The city and county encourage community members to attend a Public Open House&nbsp;on Thursday, August 22, the public can view initial concepts for the campus planning area and provide direct input.

Saline County and City of Salina launch government campus plan

Salina Police Department officers are investigating another burglary at a construction site in south Salina. The burglary occurred at the Southview Estates construction site near the intersection of Ohio and Schilling in Salina.

"A construction trailer was broken into between 5 p.m, on Aug. 7 and 7 a.m. on Aug. 8," Feldman said. "Stolen were three DeWalt saws, 26 DeWalt batteries, two half-inch DeWalt impact drills, a DeWalt rotary hammer drill and a charger."

The total value of the stolen equipment is estimated at $5,470.

Feldman said the trailer belongs to a private contractor whose business name has not been disclosed.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Salina Police Department is encouraging anyone with information about the burglary to come forward. Salina Police (785) 826-7210.

SPD officers investigating construction site burglarly

The Kansas City Chiefs and Arrowhead Events are hosting the fifth-annual Red Wednesday Run to coincide with the 33rd&nbsp;year of the club’s traditional Red Friday celebration. Red Wednesday will be celebrated on September 4 with the Chiefs opening the season at home against the Ravens on Thursday, September 5th

This year’s edition of the race remains virtual and will be part of festivities leading up to the start of the season. Registration is now open at&nbsp;chiefs.com/red-wednesday/run&nbsp;with two registration options available.

Elsewhere As part of K-State Athletics’ continued effort to provide the Best Fan Experience, all athletics facilities will be cashless venues starting with the 2024-25 season. Going cashless will reduce wait times while providing a faster and more secure payment system for fans. The change will also allow the facilities and staff to operate more efficiently.

And finally speaking of K-State Tara Davis-Woodhall, an assistant coach under new K-State Wildcat track and field coach&nbsp;Travis Geopfert, walked away with Olympic gold on Thursday in the long jump, winning with a bound of roughly 23 feet, 4 inches

Davis-Woodhall, who graduated as a student-athlete at the University of Texas was just announced as an assistant coach for the Wildcats back on Aug. 2nd.

Red Fern Booksellers has announced plans to host its first local authors' fair, offering a space for local writers to present their work, engage with the community, and sign copies of their books. The event will feature eight authors and is scheduled to take place later this year at the bookstore, located at 106 South Santa Fe Avenue, in Salina.

An open call for authors is now underway, running from Friday, August 9 to Friday, August 23. The fair is being organized by Jerzee Mullins as part of her internship at Kansas Wesleyan University.

Authors interested in participating are encouraged to submit their applications <a href="https://forms.gle/LdYQZ2jU7MrGmszL9">via a Google form link here.&nbsp;</a>

Selected authors will be notified and asked to provide additional materials, including a bio and headshot, as preparations for the fair move forward.&nbsp;

Learn about and celebrate major faiths of the world at <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/world-religions-festival/">Kansas State University's World Religions Festival</a> from 7-10 p.m. Tuesday, August 27, at Forum Hall in the K-State Student Union. This free event is open to the public and will feature religious leaders from Kansas and around the world.

On the agenda is a two-hour show featuring TED-style, five-minute talks by leaders representing major world religions like Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Judaism, as well as some newer universalizing religions that merge multiple religions into one. Those include Bahai, Daesoon Jinrihoe of Korea and Cao Dai of Vietnam. Featured guests will also perform music, show videos and share spiritual practices from a wide range of religions.

Following the show, there will be a one-hour reception with free food and religious exhibits. More information about the festival's activities and represented religions <a href="https://www.k-state.edu/world-religions-festival/">can be found on the event website.</a>

"This event will really showcase that K-State is a place for all Kansans and others regardless of faith or cultural background and that this is a place that can prepare students to go anywhere in the world and build meaningful relationships across cultural differences," said Michael Wesch, festival coordinator and professor of cultural anthropology in the College of Arts and Sciences.  

More than 20 guests from Vietnam, Korea and Taiwan, and religious leaders from around Kansas, will participate in the festival. This includes monks from the Buddhist Temple of Salina and, from Manhattan, Father Gale Hammerschmidt from St. Isadore's Catholic Student Center, Dr. Fatma Rahdi from the Islamic Center, Pastor Christian Watkins of Ecumenical Christian Missionaries, Miriam Edelman and David Marcus from the Manhattan Jewish Congregation, and Bruce Grover from the Bahai community.

Attendees will see K-State faculty members and students showing sides of themselves not usually seen in the classroom. Janyam — a band featuring Rekha Natarajan, teaching associate professor of mathematics, Bala Natarajan, professor of engineering, and their family — will entertain the crowd with traditional Indian instruments. 

Ramasamy Perumal, professor of agronomy, will sing verses from the Bhagavad Gita. Otto Chanyakorn, assistant professor of architecture, will lead a guided meditation from the Thai Forest Tradition. Terrell Campbell, graduate student in chemistry, West Hempstead, New York, will immerse the audience in the Black Church experience with his piano. Resonate A Capella will perform majestic renditions of Billie Eilish's "What Was I Made For" and Lauren Daigle's "You Say."

"This will be a festive atmosphere bringing people from all over the world together to share their ideas about what it is to be human, how to live a good life, how to care for one another, and how to find peace, meaning and happiness," Wesch said.

Many of the international guests are familiar with K-State as they have hosted students on recent education abroad trips.

"We are excited to welcome them to our home and keep building our international relationships to create more high-impact experiences for students in the future," Wesch said.

K-State's Anthropology Club and The Alliance for Religious Exploration, Tolerance, and Education, or ARETE, are helping with event organization. ARETE is a new student organization led by Duncan Young, senior in geography, Manhattan, and its members come from a wide range of faith backgrounds to explore different religions in a spirit of openness and mutual appreciation.

The festival has received financial sponsorship from the K-State Student Union Program Council, the Dow Center for Multicultural and Community Studies, the Office of International Programs, Daesoon Jinrihoe, Weixin Shengfiao and Cao Dai.

Wesch is a Kansas State University distinguished teaching scholar and has received many awards, including a U.S. Professor of the Year award. He is best known for his videos about culture, religion and technology.

K-State to host world religions festival, celebrating global faith and culture

The 2024 Tri-Rivers Fair is scheduled from August 7 to August 10.

Throughout the fair, attendees can look forward to a wide variety of events and exhibits. Key highlights include the FFA Petting Zoo, the Saline County Farm Bureau Association Hamburger Feed, and the Kid Pedal Tractor Pull. 

Judging events will feature the 4-H Beef Show, Open Class Home Economics, and various 4-H project presentations the Cornhole Tournament, Antique Tractor Show, BBQ Cook-Off, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/events/401464329024968/?ref=newsfeed">the Draft Horse Pull </a>and more.

The carnival, a central feature of the fair, will be open each evening from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The fair will conclude with a grand finale on Saturday, August 10, featuring the highly anticipated Demo Derby at the Salina Speedway on Aug. 17.

Kenwood Cove Aquatic Park released its end-of-the-season schedule. The final regular day of operation will be Sunday, Aug. 11.

The annual Pooch Plunge event will take place on Monday Aug. 12 from 5-8 p.m.

Only owners and their dogs will be allowed in the water.

Children under 16 are not allowed in the water but can come into the facility.

No dogs allowed in the lap pool, diving well or on any of the slides.

Dogs must remain on a leash while not in the water.

Owners are expected to clean up after their dogs.

No dangerous dogs as outlined by the City Ordinance passed August 9, 2004, shall be allowed.

Salina/Saline County Crimestoppers On Friday, July 26, 2024, at approximately 4:00 P.M., a female subject entered Key Rexall, 901 E. Crawford, Salina, KS, and attempted to gain prescription drugs with the use of a perscription. Employees of the business were able to determine the prescription was fraudulent. The subject left without obtaining any medication.&nbsp;

At approximately 4:45 P.M., on the same date, the female entered CVS Pharmacy, 681 S. Ohio, Salina, KS, and presented a similar prescription. CVS employees contacted the doctor listed on the prescription and confirmed it was fraudulent. Employees attempted to stall the subject but she left the business.

The female was described as being in her 50’s, approximately 5’7”, with brown and gray hair.

Gov. Kelly directs flags be flown at half-staff today in honor of Wichita firefighter 

MANHATTAN, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Agriculture is sharing notice that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has ordered the emergency suspension of all registrations of pesticide products containing the active ingredient dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA). EPA previously approved registrations for pesticide products containing DCPA to control weeds in both agricultural and non-agricultural sites, including non-residential turf sites, nursery stock and produce.

This emergency suspension is a result of EPA’s determination that DCPA is an imminent health hazard, in particular for babies whose mothers were exposed to DCPA during pregnancy. EPA’s determination that led to the emergency suspension comes as a result of the registration review process in which registered pesticides are periodically evaluated to ensure they cause no unreasonable adverse effects on human health or the environment. The emergency suspension is effective immediately, and prohibits the continued sale, distribution and use of any pesticide products containing DCPA.&nbsp;

Dacthal Flowable Herbicide, (EPA Registration Number 5481-487) is the only pesticide product containing DCPA which had been approved for use in Kansas. Although most usage of this product was likely in commercial operations, it is possible that individual consumers may have purchased it as a general use product. If you are in possession of Dacthal Flowable Herbicide, you are advised to cease use of that product and contact the manufacturer for details on the return procedure. Retail or wholesale businesses must remove the products from their sales inventory and contact the manufacturer for details on the return procedure. Do not dispose of the product by any means until you are provided with instructions by the manufacturer.

KDA’s pesticide and fertilizer program oversees the use of pesticides in the state, including registration of pesticide products and enforcement of federal orders that apply to products that are registered for use in Kansas. KDA advises of new EPA suspension

As Kansas farmers pour over field trial data to select which varieties to plant this fall, new guidance is available for those considering adding or expanding fall grazing on wheat acres. K-State Research and Extension recently released the results of trials for 16 wheat varieties for performance in dual-purpose systems where wheat is grown for both forage and grain production.&nbsp;

Logically, the traits needed for a wheat variety to succeed in a dual-purpose system differ from programs focused solely on grain production. These performance trials evaluated commonly understood factors of fall grazing like the date of the first hollow stem as well as fall forage yield, plant height, grain yield and test weight.&nbsp;

To do so, K-State researchers planted three trials in the South Central Experiment Field near Hutchinson. One trial followed grain-only management practices, while the other two trials simulated dual-purpose management. These trials included an earlier planting date with a higher seeding rate and increased nitrogen applications.&nbsp;

The first dual-purpose trial assessed forage yield and date of the first hollow stem. Fall forage production depends on variety selection, environmental factors&nbsp;-—&nbsp;temperature and precipitation&nbsp;-—&nbsp;and management decisions&nbsp;-—&nbsp;planting date, seeding rate and nitrogen application rate.&nbsp;

To measure forage yield, researchers hand-clipped and dried samples before weighing and measuring the remaining dry matter. The team found significant statistical differences in fall forage production between the tested varieties, ranging from 871 to 1,969 pounds of dry matter per acre. Eleven of the 16 varieties were considered high-yielding&nbsp;-—&nbsp;1,370 to 1,969 pounds of dry matter per acre&nbsp;-—&nbsp;including KS Ahearn and KS Providence.&nbsp;

To balance the use of that forage potential with future grain yield potential, producers with a dual-purpose system use the date of the first hollow stem as an indicator of when to stop grazing. Grazing past that first hollow stem date can decrease yields by as much as one to five percent per day. While the appearance of the first hollow stem is driven by decreasing temperatures and day length, individual varieties can differ by up to 15 to 20 days.&nbsp;

Researchers measured the first hollow stem by splitting 10 primary stems from each plot one or two times per week, stopping when all measured stems had 1.5 centimeters of hollow stem below the developing wheat head. Results were reported in day-of-year format with the average occurrence of the first hollow stem on day 76 or March 17. All the studied varieties reached the first hollow stem within an 11-day window, with KS Providence being the latest variety to achieve the first hollow stem at day 83.&nbsp;

After producers stop grazing, their focus turns to maximizing grain production. The second dual-purpose trial explored the penalties for grazing wheat fields come harvest.&nbsp;

First, researchers simulated grazing by mowing plants to 1.5 inches whenever regrowth hit two inches. This happened five times before researchers stopped the simulated grazing at the average first hollow stem date. The team then measured plant height for the rest of the grazing season and harvested the grain from the trial.&nbsp;

For the grain-only trial, yields averaged 53.5 bushels per acre, compared to 28.1 bushels per acre in the dual-purpose trial&nbsp;-—&nbsp;meaning the yield penalty from simulated grazing averaged 13.6 bushels per acre. The penalty for varieties averaged from 6.9 to 19.7 bushels per acre with the highest-yielding group including AR Iron Eagle 22AX, CP7017AX, Guardian, Golden Hawk and WB4347.&nbsp;

Test weights also varied between varieties, ranging from 55.1 to 62.7 pounds per bushel in the grain-only system to 49.5 to 67.1 pounds per bushel in the dual-purpose trial. Guardian ranked as the highest test weight in both systems, whereas AP Sunbird (experimental) ranked highest in the grain-only trial and WB4347 took the top spot in the dual-purpose system.&nbsp;

Researchers noted that weather conditions&nbsp;-—&nbsp;fall moisture and a dry spring&nbsp;-—&nbsp;also impacted final grain yields and test weights.&nbsp;

“The weather conditions&nbsp;–—&nbsp;characterized by enough moisture for forage production followed by drought conditions during the spring&nbsp;–—&nbsp;likely worsened the effects of grazing since the larger crop likely used more water early in the season and had no moisture to recover later in the spring,” the publication noted.&nbsp;

Overall, the K-State evaluation provides valuable insights for producers looking to balance needs for additional forage with the goal of a successful summer harvest. The publication is part of the Wheat Rx series, a partnership between Kansas Wheat and K-State Research and Extension to disseminate the latest research recommendations for high-yielding and high-quality wheat to Kansas wheat farmers.&nbsp;

Area schools resume classes on Friday August 9, and the enforcement of the reduced speed school zones in Salina will resume on the same date. Drivers are encouraged to be additionally aware of children, school buses, the school zones around schools, and the reduced speed limits.

Kansas law states that when a school bus stop arm is extended and the flashing lights on the bus have been activated, vehicles traveling in both directions must come to a complete stop. Kansas law also states that vehicles must stop and yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks.

The flashing speed limit sign beacons will be activated on Monday, August 5, four days in advance of the first day of school on Friday, August 9.

Motorists are encouraged to practice extra caution when traveling in the reduced-speed school zone sign locations.
