Like thespians who refer to “Macbeth” as “the Scottish play,” classical music composers have a superstition about the number of symphonies they may write. Beethoven and Mahler died shortly after completing their respective ninth symphonies.

So for 74-year-old James Barnes, professor emeritus of music at the University of Kansas, his Ninth Symphony will be his last, he said. He doesn’t want to tempt fate.

Now, though, Barnes has a boxed set of all nine of his symphonies, performed and recorded last year and released this year by the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra. The 70-piece group rehearsed and performed for a month under the baton of the dean of the KU School of Music, Paul Popiel.

Barnes, then still recovering from gallbladder surgery, couldn’t make the trip himself, but said Popiel “knows my music better than anyone else.” The two men have worked together for the past 14 years, since Popiel joined the music faculty.

Barnes has been a fixture at KU for more than 50 years, arriving as a tuba-playing junior high music camper from Oklahoma in 1963. Beginning in 1967, he attended undergraduate and graduate school here, receiving two degrees in music composition. He then began teaching and leading various bands at KU in 1975. He took emeritus status in 2015 but is still a familiar figure in Murphy Hall.

Popiel said there is an uncanny connection between Barnes and the Japanese classical music community.

“In Japan, he almost can't walk down the street without being recognized,” Popiel said. “He's very well known. His compositions really appeal to their classical music sense.

“There's a pretty famous story of his Third Symphony, which is his best known,” Popiel said. “It was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band. Just before it was to be premiered in 1996, Newt Gingrich&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995%E2%80%931996_United_States_federal_government_shutdowns">shut down the government</a>. Therefore, the Air Force Band couldn't travel to Roanoke, Virginia, for the premiere of this symphony at the Virginia Music Educators Convention ... so the piece sat on a shelf for a year.

“Jim happened to be in Japan in the fall of 1996 and ran into the conductor of Osaka Shion, who asked, ‘Can we take a look at the piece?’ So it ended up getting premiered by what was then known as the Osaka Symphonic Band, later renamed Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra. So that piece has sort of an aura around it, particularly in Japan, because they know his most famous symphony has deep ties to Japanese bands.”

In 2018, Popiel led a consortium of more than two dozen academic and other music leaders who came together to commission Barnes’ Ninth Symphony, which was premiered by the KU Wind Ensemble at the Lied Center of Kansas before being performed nationwide by other college music groups.

Popiel said Barnes’ music could be called neo-romantic for its “beautiful, memorable, singable melodies.”

“That is not where a lot of classical music has been in the last 20 or 30 years,” Popiel said. “Some critics may say Jim’s music is dated because it has melody. But I’m not sure that's a good criticism.&nbsp;

“I think Barnes’ music’s most shining attribute is how likable it is the first time you hear it ... He is very contemporary," Popiel said. "You can hear jazz harmonies, complex counterpoint. There is considerable dissonance. ... It's certainly 21st century modern music but in a way that's very marketable and audience friendly.”

Popiel said when he came to KU in 2010, “I had the opportunity to do a lot more of Jim’s music. It's the symphonies in particular that are really challenging pieces, and before I came to KU, I didn't have a band that could play a lot of his music. So over the last 14 years, I have been one of the champions of his music.”

Popiel said he had to coax Barnes into giving Osaka Shion permission to record his First Symphony, written as Barnes’ master’s thesis, because in retrospect Barnes considered it an “early, immature work.” But the boxed set would not be complete without it, Popiel said, and so Barnes relented and, in fact, rescored and improved the First Symphony in the summer of 2022.

Popiel said the recording project was conceived as part of Osaka Shion’s centennial anniversary celebration.

“They got a grant and some crowdfunding to take on one of the most ambitious projects in our field — recording all nine of Jim's symphonies,” Popiel said. “That's never been done before, and it's epic — huge forces, big orchestras and almost six hours of music. They performed a series of four concerts to record all nine symphonies live."

In December 2023, Osaka Shion traveled to Chicago for the convention called the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.midwestclinic.org/">Midwest Clinic</a>, the largest annual band and orchestra convention in the world. There were 18,000 attendees in 2023, and Barnes was invited to guest conduct Osaka Shion at its formal concert.

Popiel said it was a thrill for the KU delegation attending the clinic to see the esteem in which Barnes is held by peers worldwide.

A five-CD boxed set of the recordings was released in January by Osaka Shion in Japan. In addition, the set should be available soon through&nbsp;<a href="https://keiserproductions.com/">Keiser-Southern&nbsp;Music</a>. A possible global release to streaming music services is still being negotiated.

This year, Symphony in the Flint Hills&nbsp; welcomes Katharine McPhee as the guest vocalist performing with the Kansas City Symphony. McPhee became a household name in 2006 during Season 5 of AMERICAN IDOL. K-State Research and Extension and&nbsp;<a href="https://kswheat.com/">Kansas Wheat</a>&nbsp;are hosting a pair of meetings in Dodge City (March 7) and Wichita (March 8) to share what those organizations term “a prescription for producing high-yielding and high-quality wheat in a sustainable manner.”

The meetings – called&nbsp;<a href="https://kswheat.com/growers/resources/kansas-wheat-rx">Kansas Wheat Rx</a>&nbsp;– combine suggested management practices for the economical and sustainable production of high-quality winter wheat in Kansas. The information is based on research conducted at Kansas State University and funded – at least in part – by Kansas Wheat, a cooperative agreement between the Kansas Wheat Commission and the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://kswheat.com/dodgecity">Dodge City meeting</a>&nbsp;will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Depot Theater, 201 E. Wyatt Earp Blvd.&nbsp;<a href="https://kswheat.com/wichita">The Wichita meeting</a>&nbsp;will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Doubletree Hotel at the Airport, 2098 Airport Road.

Registration is available free to&nbsp;<a href="https://kswheat.com/join">members of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers</a>. The registration fee for non-members is $110, which includes membership to KAWG.

The lineup of wheat experts includes K-State faculty members Romulo Lollato, Carlos Bonini Pires, Kelsey Andersen Onfore, Dorivar Ruiz Diaz, Dan O’Brien and Gregg Ibendahl, as well Carlos Bonini Pires and Logan Simon.

Among numerous topics, they will discuss:

● Cover crops and soil health. ● The benefit of wheat to cropping systems. ● Soil fertility. ● Important wheat diseases and fungicides. ● The economics of wheat production.

“We cannot change the impact of weather on each year’s crop, but we can arm wheat producers with the knowledge they need to maximize profitability through the genetic potential of new varieties and best management practices,” said Aaron Harries, vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat.”

Kansas Wheat has funded much of the research conducted at K-State, “from the importance of variety selection to the practices and tools farmers can use to improve quality,” according to Harries.

State wheat experts to outline best practices for growing wheat in Kansas

Saline County Jail Bookings, March 3

While finalizing details of his mother's estate, a 79-year-old Salina resident received a phone call from an alleged scammer and lost $5,000 in gift card cash.

The scammer, posing as an AT&amp;T employee, called the victim on Wednesday and reported that the company would credit his mother's account $600 with some online assistance from the victim.

"This subject [suspect] had a foreign accent," said Salina Police Department Capt. James Feldman. "The subject [suspect] then instructed the victim to log into what was supposedly an AT&amp;T account and enter some information so they could credit it."

After entering information into the website, the victim reported the suspect then instructed him to enter the $600 into a text box, but the victim accidentally entered $6,000.

The suspect then redirected the victim to another suspect posing as an AT&amp;T employee to correct the victim's transaction error.

"He was directed to someone else to make arrangements to 'make the transaction right,'" Feldman said. "That person instructed the victim to go to the store and purchase $5,000 in gift cards, which he did."

According to Feldman, the victim purchased six $500 Nordstrom gift cards and four $500 CVS gift cards and gave the gift card information to the suspects posing as AT&amp;T employees.

The suspects then ended the call, and the victim reported the incident to SPD the following day, Thursday, Feb. 29.

"So, of course, no suspect information," Feldman said. "We want to remind everybody that if any business or government agency ever asks for gift cards, it's a scam."

Feldman said the victim did not provide any bank information to the scammers, but gift card transactions are more anonymous and difficult to track the cash receiver.

An evacuation notice was rescinded for all those within two miles of Hohneck and Watkins Roads, according to Saline County emergency officials. Fire crews worked a large grass fire roughly 5-7 miles northwest of Salina,&nbsp;according to the National Weather Service.

The fire that started on the south side of Interstate 70 between Muir and Hedville Road crossed the interstate and burned north toward Culver, prompting the evacuation.

According to Salina Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Stansberry, one structural support, one brushfire maintenance, and one medical crew helped to put out the fire.&nbsp;

Fire crews from Kanopolis, Ellsworth, and Hedville also responded to the fire. Traffic was advised to avoid the interstate and take an alternate route for necessary travel.&nbsp;

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."

With dreams of trade and industry, J. K. Forney moved to Abilene from eastern Pennsylvania in 1879 and started farming.&nbsp;

Once Forney began raising cattle, he realized the potential of the Kansas dairying industry.&nbsp;

Seven years later, Forney began the Belle Springs Creamery 12 miles south of Abilene to produce primarily one dairy product — butter.

A writer for The Kansas City Journal described the Belle Springs Creamery as using "oceans of cream — not the whole milk, mind you, but oceans of the cream itself — to manufacture the butter turned out by the Belle Springs Creamery during these thirty years," in an article from Sunday, Nov. 26, 1916.

Forney began Belle Springs Creamery in a factory south of Abilene in 1886. The larger plant allowed Belle Springs to begin interstate trade, expanding to produce thousands of pounds of butter, ice cream and other dairy products annually.

After outgrowing that factory in 1889, the business moved to a larger plant one-half mile east of Abilene. It also opened a plant in Salina in 1897, which focused primarily on large-scale butter production.

Though this new plant produced more butter, the now-incorporated creamery outgrew the factory 13 years later in 1902 and constructed its largest plant in Abilene, producing literal tons of butter.

According to the Smoky Hill Museum, the creamery's management consisted of President Forney, Vice President M. L. Hoffman, Treasurer Jacob S. Engle and Secretary and General Manager E. H. Forney.&nbsp;

In 1906, former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower started one of his earliest jobs at only 16 years old at the Abilene Belle Springs factory. He worked at the plant until he went to West Point in 1911.

His father, David Eisenhower, moved to Abilene to begin a career in refrigeration after graduating from school in Texas. David Eisenhower worked for Belle Springs Creamery for more than a decade.

The creamery produced butter that shipped to 20 states, reaching from Texas to California and Kansas' neighboring states. In 1942, Belle Springs Creamery sold to a larger regional corporation and ended its operations in Salina and Abilene.

Local history is an integral piece of any community. There's no shortage of long-standing historical markers and buildings in Salina, but for some community members, parts of that tradition have only recently received recognition.

Those community members work tirelessly to compile and present that history to Salina residents today, and in 2022, a new historical marker found its home in Caldwell Plaza.

On June 18, 2022, the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XnaRnsgQZE">Dana Adams Project unveiled</a> a historical marker at Caldwell Plaza in town that told the story of 19-year-old African American man Dana Adams, lynched by a mob on April 20, 1893.

"Not to blame or shame anybody, but to recognize that this happened," said <a href="https://www.northsalina.org/">North Salina Community Development</a>&nbsp;board member Sandra Beverly. "You need to learn this because I don't care what happens in Washington D.C. — if you don't pay attention to your own community, You're not doing squat."

Beverly has remained active in the Salina community for decades — she has served several roles within the Salina NAACP, worked with Rev. Martha Murchison and Dee Williamson on the Dana Adams Project and continues to participate in North Salina Community Development projects.

During the commemoration ceremony at Caldwell Plaza, members of the Dana Adams Coalition told attendees that from 1865 to 1950, 23 young African American citizens lost their lives to a white mob committing a lynching.

Preserving and presenting local Black History

Beverly strived to gather and showcase local African American history to residents in her various community roles, ensuring the preservation of history surrounding local Black leaders and citizens.

A significant piece of that history also stems from the Dunbar School, the first segregated school in town after Salina became a first-class city in 1920.&nbsp;

According to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.dunbarschoolsalina.com/">Dunbar School Alumni Association, Inc</a>., secretary Jennifer Gordon, once Salina reached 15,000 residents, city commissioners allowed the citizens to vote on segregating or not segregating the schools in town.&nbsp;

Gordon said from a pool of 2,527 votes cast, citizens elected to segregate the schools, and in November 1922, the Dunbar School opened for enrollment for students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Named for the famous poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, the school had six teachers and 72 students entering its inaugural academic year, with P.G. Porter as its first principal.

"It was built brand new. It was considered one of the finest facilities during the post-World War I growth boom in the Midwest," Gordon said. "They had a full curriculum where teachers taught home economics, they taught what was a manual training or shop class."

As the Dunbar School began teaching Salina's African American youth, it also provided an opportunity for young teachers graduating from Kansas Wesleyan University to start their careers locally.

Gordon said one of the teachers from Dunbar, Robert Caldwell, later became Salina's first Black mayor and eventually a Kansas state representative.

His teaching career began at Dunbar in 1939, and after a break to serve in the armed forces during World War II, he returned in 1946. In 1954, the Salina School Board appointed Caldwell as principal.

"He went on to be mayor of Salina and then also a representative, so he was well known and was an integral part of getting the Alumni Association organized," Gordon said.

Caldwell was also essential in organizing the Dunbar School Alumni Association's annual reunions before he died in 1999.

Dunbar School was also significant outside of education for the Black community in Salina. The school provided a community center for members to find support and understanding.

"It was an opportunity for African American children to be taught by African American teachers. Those teachers lived in the community, some of them were from the community, so they knew the students, families, parents — they may have even gone to the same churches," Gordon said. "When you look at an environment like that, you can say there were some positives about having a segregated school with teachers that really knew you and where you were from."

"It was really an active community center and focus."

Gordon did not attend Dunbar School herself, but her brother and mother attended and told countless stories of their education and how it created a sense of community for them.

One story she remembered from her mother was during the Dust Bowl in the 1920s. Her mother lived on Eighth Street near what used to be Longfellow School, today Salina Fire Department Station One, and had to walk past Longfellow to get to Dunbar School every day.

"Mom remembers walking to school with the dust everywhere getting in your eyes, ears and mouth, and instead of being able to stop at the corner and walk right into Longfellow, which would have been ideal at that time, especially with that weather, [she had to continue] tracking on east to get to Dunbar," Gordon said.

The Dunbar School closed in 1956, only two years after the Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954 due to declining enrollment.

After Dunbar School closed, the community center and spirit for Black and African American Salinans only evolved in town, with another significant social focus becoming the publication, The Black Word Is.

 </figure>As the Dunbar School began teaching Salina's African American youth, it also provided an opportunity for young teachers graduating from Kansas Wesleyan University to start their careers locally.Gordon said one of the teachers from Dunbar, Robert Caldwell, later became Salina's first Black mayor and eventually a Kansas state representative.His teaching career began at Dunbar in 1939, and after a break to serve in the armed forces during World War II, he returned in 1946. In 1954, the Salina School Board appointed Caldwell as principal."He went on to be mayor of Salina and then also a representative, so he was well known and was an integral part of getting the Alumni Association organized," Gordon said.Caldwell was also essential in organizing the Dunbar School Alumni Association's annual reunions before he died in 1999.<figure>

 </figure>Dunbar School was also significant outside of education for the Black community in Salina. The school provided a community center for members to find support and understanding."It was an opportunity for African American children to be taught by African American teachers. Those teachers lived in the community, some of them were from the community, so they knew the students, families, parents — they may have even gone to the same churches," Gordon said. "When you look at an environment like that, you can say there were some positives about having a segregated school with teachers that really knew you and where you were from.""It was really an active community center and focus."Gordon did not attend Dunbar School herself, but her brother and mother attended and told countless stories of their education and how it created a sense of community for them.One story she remembered from her mother was during the Dust Bowl in the 1920s. Her mother lived on Eighth Street near what used to be Longfellow School, today Salina Fire Department Station One, and had to walk past Longfellow to get to Dunbar School every day.<figure>

 </figure>"Mom remembers walking to school with the dust everywhere getting in your eyes, ears and mouth, and instead of being able to stop at the corner and walk right into Longfellow, which would have been ideal at that time, especially with that weather, [she had to continue] tracking on east to get to Dunbar," Gordon said.The Dunbar School closed in 1956, only two years after the Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954 due to declining enrollment.<h2>Continuing the legacy</h2>After Dunbar School closed, the community center and spirit for Black and African American Salinans only evolved in town, with another significant social focus becoming the publication, The Black Word Is.The Black American Citizens Organization of Salina, or BACOS, published a paper with some grant funding from 1971 to 1976. According to the Smoky Hill Museum, James Briscoe served as its editor from the publication's office on Mulberry and Third Streets.James Briscoe served as editor from its office in the Washington Building on the northeast corner of Mulberry &amp; 3rd streets."They really kept a lot of things in the pulse on the community and how they can better do things for minorities in Salina and representation in public office," Gordon said.&nbsp;James Briscoe served as the editor for The Black Word Is throughout the paper's lifetime.The Carver Center was another community hub for many Black and African American residents in North Salina. Beverly recalled staff offering everything from sewing to photography classes, but she performed in a singing group through the center."When I was there, Carver Center used to be a set of bearings," Beverly said. "When other kids were flipping burgers on the weekend, I was traveling on the road singing. We practiced there [at the Carver Center], where everybody hung out."The city then decided to build a new Carver Center, leaving the community that used it without a central hub for its neighborhood. Another Beverly spoke about was the Our Lady of Guadalupe community hub that disappeared in North Salina in the late 1900s.Beverly is an active board member of the North Salina Community Development board, and through her experience, she said many amenities on the north edge of Salina have disappeared."I am originally from St. Louis, Missouri, and I know what it looks like when you just destroy and cut off a neighborhood," Beverly said. "there's no grocery store, no medical services. When they closed the school, I think that was the biggest blow."&nbsp;<h2>Modern-day Black History in Salina</h2>Many residents may think back to the 1960s and 70s for race-related violence or slander, but the reality for many Black citizens in Salina is that prejudice continues in the 21st Century.In 2013, then-commissioner Jim Gile used a racial slur to describe a hasty job during a public meeting, which the commission chairman met with little action."When you can have a county commissioner sit up in a public meeting and use the word n----- at least three times and not be corrected by the person that was the head of the commission, there's something wrong," Beverly said.&nbsp;Beverly said that was one, yet very public, example of many residents and leaders having poor or little understanding of the challenges many African American and Black residents have encountered in their daily lives.The north side of Salina was once a central hub for various minority communities, but today, it continues to see little development from the city.Today, the most recent large-scale development in North Town was the new Saline County Sheriff's Office and Jail."This is the fire-breathing pit in my stomach right now — they built this $90 million jail, but there's nothing else at North Town," Beverly said. "The only reason Saline County built there was to put people from north Salina in it."Through these modern-day challenges, Beverly said the Black community of Salina continues to share and celebrate its heritage throughout town in celebrations, events and historical tours.Celebrations like the Daddy Bud Block Party, Juneteenth, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and more all provide a place for the community to gather and share stories about their lives in Salina."I think we do a good job of trying to keep our stories alive in the churches and our communities," Beverly said. "Just talking to each other, that's the most important thing, being open to those conversations."The Dana Adams Project and similar organizations continue gathering historical information about impactful Black and African American Salina citizens to present to community members and visitors.<figure>

 </figure>Throughout February, multiple organizations put together events to celebrate Black History Month, and at <a href="https://www.kwu.edu/">Kansas Wesleyan University</a>, they began a new tradition this year.KWU held its first Black Leadership Symposium on Friday, Feb. 16, where local leaders gathered to share their experiences as a Black or African American people in leadership positions.Dr. Marlene Carson was the keynote speaker for the event, but other local leaders included Stormont Vail Health Director of Health Equity and Policy Emersen Frazier, Pfizer Senior Continuous Improvement Specialist Clifford Bunville, NBH Bank Senior Vice President and Director of Credit Review Charles Spencer and three more leaders.During the event, speakers Frazier and Bunville shared a little about their paths to success."Create a mission and vision statement for yourself so that you can find out what's most important to you," Frazier said.
