Long, long ago in a land far, far away, bread wheat came into existence. Researchers are still unlocking the secrets of the wild relatives of that ancient wheat to improve modern-day varieties - and a collection of seeds housed on Kimball Avenue in Manhattan is key to this work.&nbsp;

Bikram Gill and John Raupp with K-State’s Wheat Genetics Resource Center sat down with Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations, on a recent episode of the “Wheat’s on Your Mind” podcast to share wheat’s origin story and how the collection continues to provide valuable genetic resources for modern wheat breeding programs.&nbsp;

To understand this potential, one must go way back to the origin of wheat as a species in the Fertile Crescent - where the crop helped start human civilization more than 10,000 years ago. At that time, wheat did not yet exist. It would take two major evolutionary events that mixed three different grass species to make the first bread wheat genome.&nbsp;

The first stop on this timeline was the merger of two wild ancestors that resulted in the eventual creation of wild emmer wheat (genome formula AB).&nbsp;

“As a species in nature, nature produced bread wheat around half a million years ago,” Gill said. “Two grasses, they happened to have fun. They hybridized - and that produced bread wheat.”&nbsp;

The second stop on the timeline came more than 10,000 years ago when that wild emmer wheat was combined with an ancient goatgrass (genome formula D). That genetic mix resulted in the first crop cultivated by humankind.&nbsp;

“In some farmer’s field, some goat grass hybridized with emmer wheat, which originated in Syria,” Gill said. “And that farmer was smart enough, he selected that plant. And that’s our bread wheat.”&nbsp;

From there, Mother Nature kept mixing in wild wheat relatives to this new bread wheat - and farmers selected the most successful versions to plant again.&nbsp;

“After wheat originated, these wild wheats kept cross-hybridizing with domesticated wheat,” Gill said. “There were no breeders, but nature was doing breeding for the first 10,000 years. They were cross-pollinating and farmers were selecting new types out of that.”&nbsp;

This origin story is important because it explains why the wheat genome is so complex. Wheat is a hexaploid, meaning it has six sets of seven chromosomes. Most genes in wheat exist in three copies - one each from those A, B and D genomes. As a result, there are 16 billion DNA letters in the wheat genome - the human genome has three billion letters - meaning you could type out the genetic code of wheat in 12-point font and the type will go around the world.&nbsp;

This triplication and redundancy make wheat very hard to genetically analyze.&nbsp;

“It’s essentially three different genomes coexisting in one,” Gill said. “It’s like three married people living in one house. Each can be independent, so that causes the problem. How do you sleep in one room without messing it up? Wheat is a very elegant genetic system.”&nbsp;

While hard to pick through, that complexity also makes wheat a more durable crop.&nbsp;

“This is called genetic buffering,” Gill said. “It’s almost like there are three soldiers or three genes. So, one goes out, the second one is there. The second goes out, the third one is there. Wheat can tolerate the extremes of environment because of this buffering caused by the redundancy of the genes.”&nbsp;

With this understanding of the origin and complexity of wheat - how does that relate to wheat breeding programs? Fast forward to 1979 when Gill did a postdoctoral fellowship at K-State and was first exposed to the genetic stocks used to map genes and breed wheat. He took that experience with him to his second postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California-Riverside, where he was blown away by the genetic diversity of a collection of wild weeds.&nbsp;

Gill started to form a vision of a resource that would combine the two - a collection of wild wheat relatives with unlocked genetic potential and a wheat breeding program that could replicate Mother Nature’s process of pulling in traits to make better varieties for farmers to plant.&nbsp;

In 1980, Gill wrote a grant and flew on a small plane to Hutchinson, the then-headquarters of the Kansas Wheat Commission to pitch his idea.&nbsp;

“They had never funded K-State until then,” Gill said. “I presented my vision - we want to establish the Wheat Genetics Resource Center because that’s where we’re going next. A yield bump is going to come from this because of that genetic diversity. Nobody knew what wild wheats were in the Great Plains at that time. I said I know that this is where the next big evolution is.”&nbsp;

Backed by approval from K-State’s wheat breeder at the time, the commissioners agreed to provide the seed money. Gill gathered an initial collection of 500 genetic lines, including seeds from collections in Japan, Israel, Russia and other countries. He immediately dove into early projects identifying Hessian fly resistance and leaf rust resistance in lines of Aegilops tauschii (Tausch's goatgrass), which was relatively easy to cross into wheat.&nbsp;

“We are just doing what happened in nature,” Gill said. “That’s how bread wheat arose, so we are essentially repeating the same process except we’re doing it in the lab.”&nbsp;

Raupp has served as the curator of the Wheat Genetics Resource Center since August 1980. He noted the collection is up to about 4,200 lines, ranging from Aegilops tauschii which grows anywhere from Turkey to western China to one species that is only found in the Sinai peninsula of Egypt and a little bit into Israel.&nbsp;

It’s his job to maintain the stocks of this genetic material, making sure scientists and breeders have access to the seeds they need to complete projects. That doesn’t mean these seeds only sit in a gigantic refrigerator. To maintain their integrity, the seeds must be planted, grown either in a greenhouse or an outdoor plot and often hand-harvested to replenish seeds before they are no longer viable.&nbsp;

“While they’re easy to grow, they require a lot of time to clean and maintain,” Raupp said. “My biggest job is just maintaining the collection so we have enough seed on hand to provide the researchers so that they can do their work.”

Today, Raupp noted he annually fulfills about 100 different requests for those seeds from researchers in neighboring states to those in countries on the other side of the planet. Aided by modern research techniques like genetic sequencing and CRISPR, these researchers continue to unlock more of that ancient genetic potential to improve the wheat varieties of tomorrow - from sawfly resistance to higher protein content to how root morphologies aid drought resistance.&nbsp;

“It’s been a gold mine,” Harries said. “You go treasure hunting in this collection that you’ve created here. A lot of the traits that we have for stripe rust, leaf rust and viral traits all come from those wild wheat relatives. And that work is far from over.”&nbsp;

Additionally, August is the start of peak Atlantic hurricane season, which experts have predicted to be an “extremely active” season, as evident by Hurricane Debby forecasted to cause widespread flooding, power outages and travel hazards which could result in additional blood drive cancellations and lower donor turnout, threatening an already low blood supply.The Red Cross also continues to face the fewest number of people donating blood in the past two decades. When fewer people donate blood, even small disruptions to the nation’s supply are hard to overcome. More individuals are needed to donate now to help patients counting on lifesaving blood following accidents, during surgeries and for treatment of conditions such as sickle cell disease and cancer.

Blood cannot be manufactured or stockpiled and can only be made available through the kindness of volunteer donors. It’s the blood on the shelves now that helps during an emergency.

Everything can change in an instant

“Before my accident, the notion of blood donation was an abstract concept. It’s not abstract anymore. Now, it’s absolute.”

Mark Munson of Maine survived the unimaginable. For decades, he has been a motorcyclist, riding throughout New England. Thanks to a great 2024 Show in Salina, the KKOA (Kustom Kemp of America Association) Leadsled Spectacular Car Show Owners, Jerry &amp; Devona Titus have confirmed that they will return in 2025. The show will celebrate its 45th Anniversary July 24-27, 2025.

 Traditionally, the KKOA Leadsled Spectacular event includes several iconic events such as a Thursday night cruise parade, the Friday thru Sunday car show in Oakdale Park featuring kool kemp cars, food vendors, chop demonstrations, retail vendors and live entertainment, Friday Night Drags, a Saturday Elvis concert and Sunday Awards. 

The highlight of course is hosting hundreds of beautiful custom cars and the visitors that drive and ride in them from throughout the United States and beyond. 

For 19 years the Salina community has helped KKOA make the show a success. Hundreds of local volunteers, organizations, businesses and the city have provided volunteer hours, in-kind contributions and sponsorship of the show. The warm embrace and work of the community is what keeps KKOA returning.

 “I always say, Say Salina, Say Spectacular, because that is the truth. The Leadsled Spectacular is in the books for 2024; it was what we call it SPECTACULAR! The weather cooperated and made for enjoyable days and nights. We had a large cruise down Santa Fe on Thursday night. We love what our show brings to Salina, Kansas. We had our Drags on Friday Night with a large crowd there. Restaurants were busy, motels filled. Everyone had a good time. KKOA loves bringing the show to Salina, Kansas. We used to move the show around to different states, we found Salina, Kansas in the best location for our show. We are planning our 45th Annual Leadsled Spectacular in Salina, Kansas. Dates are July 24, 25, 26, 27, 2025. This has been in Salina, Kansas will be the 20th Year,” Titus said.

KKOA Leadsled Spectacular Car Show to return in 2025

A construction site in Salina was the target of a burglary between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. 

Salina Police Department (SPD) Captain James Feldman said the theft took place in the 1000 block of Brock Road, where Will Electric employees showed up for work and discovered a significant amount of wire removed.&nbsp;

"Employees of Will Electric reported that they had been working on some apartments in the area; when they showed up for work yesterday morning, they determined that someone had gone through and removed 1,520 feet of Romex wiring from the construction," Feldman said. 

The wiring, valued at $1,250, had already been installed in the apartment complex's walls. Feldman said the theft likely occurred between 3 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday. Replacing the stolen wiring is expected to cost an additional $1,500. 

The Salina Police Department has no suspects at this time. Officers continue to investigate this case and encourage anyone with information to come forward.

On Wednesday Bobby Witt Jr. homered on a pitch outside the zone for the fourth time this season and Paul DeJong finished a triple short of the cycle, helping the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 4-1 to avoid a series sweep.

Cole Ragans struck out eight and walked none in seven innings, allowing one run and five hits. He has now won three straight starts for the first time as a major leaguer.

Despite losing ground in the AL Central the Royals still sit in the American Leagues third Wild Card spot two games ahead of the Red Sox and three games ahead of the Mariners, these standings come with just six weeks remaining in the regular season.

Staying in Kansas City the KC Current continue to cruise through 16 matches, sitting second on the UWSL table behind only the Orlando Pride.

The Current have played their way into the Championship Final of the women’s cup and will take on Spains Atletico Madrid this Friday at 8:00 in Kansas City before resuming the regular season at the Washington Spirit on August 25th.

And finally Southeast of Saline has hired Julianna Yanez as its next head volleyball coach.

910 KINA Sports Headlines — August 15

A routine patrol in Salina on Tuesday afternoon led to the arrest of a man on multiple drug-related charges following a brief attempt to flee from police.

Just before 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13,  a Salina Police Department (SPD) officer spotted a gray Nissan Pathfinder in the 1000 block of Yale Street. The officer recognized the vehicle's driver as someone with a suspended license and an active warrant. 

"The officer attempted to stop him [suspect] in the 900 block of Willis Avenue," Feldman said. "The suspect failed to stop and fled. We did not pursue, but his speed did get up to 68 mph and we understand he nearly had an accident at Broadway Avenue and South Ninth Street."

When asked why officers decided not to pursue, Feldman said there wasn't a need.

"The time and location just wasn't safe," Feldman said. "It's just not worth pursuing. We knew who it was."

Officers identified the Pathfinder's driver as 38-year-old Salinan, Anthony Mac II. A short time later, officers observed Mac pulling into Kraft Manor near Ninth and Cloud Streets. He exited the vehicle and attempted to hide behind the buildings in Kraft Manor, but was apprehended by officers without incident.

"They did locate marijuana that he had tossed in the backyard. Upon searching his vehicle, they located a 16 grams of cocaine," Feldman said. 

The discovery in Mac's vehicle led officers to obtain a search warrant for his residence in the 1000 block of Yale Street. The search resulted in the alleged seizure of approximately 160 grams of cocaine, additional marijuana, packaging materials, U.S. currency, and two firearms.

Mac faces multiple requested charges, including two counts of distribution of cocaine, two counts of distribution of marijuana, two counts of possession of a stimulant, two counts of possession of marijuana, one count of aggravated endangerment of a child, two counts of no Kansas drug tax stamp, and one count of possession of paraphernalia.

On Thursday through Friday, August 15 through 16, APAC Shears of Salina will begin the City of Salina’s annual ultrathin bonded asphalt surface project. The schedule is as follows, weather permitting:

Motorists are urged to avoid work zones altogether or proceed with caution for the safety of the crews performing the work.

This type of preventative maintenance has been used to help extend the life of many roads around the State of Kansas. It consists of a thin, coarse aggregate hot mix over a special asphalt membrane similar to a chip seal but placed in one pass with a spray paver. The membrane prevents water intrusion and provides a superior bond to the old asphalt. The overlay can disperse water quickly off the surface, which reduces roadway spray from vehicles and provides greater visibility and traction in wet weather. UBAS has performed well for other cities and provides a good friction surface in wet weather.

The scheduled work mentioned above is the first installment of the City of Salina’s 2024 UBAS annual maintenance project. The full project cost of all installments totals $642,400.

Salina Symphony presents 'Chamber Music in the Courtyard' on Sept. 28

When anticipating a new baby, oftentimes pregnant families face a challenge in trying to arrange infant care for their little one while they go to work.

But in Kansas and other places, meeting the demand for early childhood care and education is a challenge, said Bradford Wiles, a K-State Research and Extension specialist in applied human sciences.

The demand for early childhood care and education

“We would need to add 84,000 slots to meet the current demand for early childhood care and education in Kansas,” Wiles said.

Not only is the need great, but the affordability for young families can also be a challenge, he added.

“Early care and education facilities are essentially private schools, and you are asking people at the start of their lifetime of earnings to pay for a private school at a time when they can least afford it,” Wiles said.

He said it is also hard for providers to make a living wage in many communities.

“By helping our communities solve early childhood care and education needs there is a collective benefit for the children, families, and businesses in those communities,” Wiles said.

Selecting an early childhood care and education provider

“In most counties in Kansas, home care providers provide 50% of the overall care in any community, and they go through the same licensing and professional development as those who serve in an early childhood care and education center,” Wiles said. “It is best to secure licensed care whenever possible.”

With that in mind, what do parents need to look for when evaluating a potential early childhood care and education provider?

“Look at how the providers talk to the children. Do they get down to talk with them at their level? What is their tone of voice? High-quality professionals use a tone of voice that is supportive of everyone,” Wiles said.

Other things to observe are the cleanliness of the facility and if there are any obvious safety issues. He also said to see if the children are ever out of the view of the provider.

When speaking to the provider, he encourages parents to ask about discipline protocols and learn about what type of early education curriculum they follow. Wiles also recommends asking for referrals.

KSRE: Tips for Parents — Assessing early childhood care, education options

<a href="https://www.kbi.ks.gov/MissingPersons/Search/Details/M988093541">According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI)</a>,&nbsp;Jonathan Clayton, the Peabody, Kans. interim city clerk is missing. Clayton was last seen on Aug. 3 in Marion County.

According to the KBI missing persons report, Clayton is a white 42-year-old, six-foot-tall male weighing 215 pounds. His hair color is brown and his eyes are hazel.&nbsp;

He was last seen driving a red Chevrolet extended cab pickup truck with Kansas license plates.

Visit Abilene invites public to ribbon cutting for 'Abilene Celebrates America 250' mural

At its regular Monday meeting, Salina City Commissioners approved the city's 2025 budget following a formal public hearing where citizens could voice their comments and concerns. The budget, totaling approximately $151.9 million, represents a 1.5% increase over the 2024 budget, which was set at $149.7 million.

Debbie Pack, Director of Finance and Administration, presented the budget to the commission, emphasizing that the public hearing was a required step under state law. Notices for the hearing were posted on the city's website and in Salina 311.

"The final numbers on the 2025 state budget forms levied the taxes at 29.294 mills, which is about .322 point three to two Mills, less than the current mill levy rate. This allocates approximately $15,423,400 in property tax to both the general fund and the bond and interest fund," Pack said. "This rate may be adjusted once Saline County certifies the total valuations on November 1. Total valuations for the 2025 budget increased slightly at 1.2%. Sales tax, which is approximately 33% of the general fund revenue, is budgeted to increase one and a half percent over the 2024 budgeted number. Property tax, which is approximately 22% of the general fund revenue, is being budgeted flat, at your direction, not to exceed the revenue-neutral rate."

City of Salina personnel costs, accounting for approximately 75% of total expenditures in the budget, include a 4% cost of living adjustment for city employees, effective January 1, 2025, and a maximum 3% merit increase.

The commission also approved adjustments to the comprehensive fee schedule, with increases ranging between 2% and 5%. Water and wastewater rates were also adjusted, with a 2.5% increase on the consumption side and a 20% increase in the monthly meter fee for water. The sewer side monthly fee remains unchanged.

Following the approval, the budget document is available for public viewing online on the city's website and at the city clerk's office. The 2025 budget, which includes 20 budgeted funds, will be finalized once Saline County certifies the total valuations on November 1.

When the time came for community input and questions, Salinan John Blanchard addressed commissioners with four questions regarding the funding and contingencies for the river renewal project, the impact of recent building permit fee waivers and tax abatements, whether the budget accounts for inflation about the proposed 4% COLA increase for employees and the City of Salina's multi-million dollar line item for the Former Schilling Air Force Base cleanup.&nbsp;

"On the second page of the staff report was a $50 million line item for SAFSAB, clean up. That's a $50 million line item," Blanchard said. "The latest 2022 audit showed a fund balance of $67 million in that in that fund. If I can get some clarification as to maybe what we expect expenditures to be this year, on the cleanup and on the years going forward."

"We have budgeted $50 million in anticipation of the majority of that funding is going to be spent in the first two years that they give get actively in the progression of doing work in that fund," Pack said. "From what I've heard from those project people, that's going to start here in the latter part of 2024 and go into 2025 and 2026."

Pack said about 70 to 75% of the funds will be spent in the first three years as those clean-up projects are built and implemented.

"As that stuff's put into place, then the remaining funds is just simply testing and looking and watching it over the next 20 or 30 years," Pack said. 

Salina City Manager Mike Schrage the challenge of predicting sales tax revenue, noting that while the city has historically been conservative in its estimates, recent years have exceeded expectations.

"We've had a few years here where we've exceeded the revenues actually exceeded the budgeted amount, as Debbie indicated," Schrage said. "Trying to be conservative going forward, we are very watchful of kind of what performance looks like. And then we do think that we've got enough capacity accounted for, both in terms of conservative budgeting and fund balance."

Before making the motion to approve the 2025 Budget, Commissioner Mike Hoppock offered remarks on the city's current financial footing. 

"Those of you that maybe haven't paid attention to the budgeting process, we've had numerous study sessions, and a lot of the questions that were asked have been addressed," Hoppock said. "I think staff and financially, the city's in a really good position, and we're trying to make sure we stay in that position for years to come."

Commissioner Trent Davis seconded the motion. Mayor Bill Longbine was absent from the meeting. Acting Mayor Vice-Mayor Greg Lenkiewicz called the roll call vote. 

Commissioners approved the budget unanimously.

The budget, totaling approximately $151.9 million, represents a 1.5% increase over the 2024 budget, which was set at $149.7 million.Debbie Pack, Director of Finance and Administration, presented the budget to the commission, emphasizing that the public hearing was a required step under state law. Notices for the hearing were posted on the city's website and in Salina 311."The final numbers on the 2025 state budget forms levied the taxes at 29.294 mills, which is about .322 point three to two Mills, less than the current mill levy rate. This allocates approximately $15,423,400 in property tax to both the general fund and the bond and interest fund," Pack said. "This rate may be adjusted once Saline County certifies the total valuations on November 1. Total valuations for the 2025 budget increased slightly at 1.2%. Sales tax, which is approximately 33% of the general fund revenue, is budgeted to increase one and a half percent over the 2024 budgeted number. Property tax, which is approximately 22% of the general fund revenue, is being budgeted flat, at your direction, not to exceed the revenue-neutral rate."City of Salina personnel costs, accounting for approximately 75% of total expenditures in the budget, include a 4% cost of living adjustment for city employees, effective January 1, 2025, and a maximum 3% merit increase.The commission also approved adjustments to the comprehensive fee schedule, with increases ranging between 2% and 5%. Water and wastewater rates were also adjusted, with a 2.5% increase on the consumption side and a 20% increase in the monthly meter fee for water. The sewer side monthly fee remains unchanged.Following the approval, the budget document is available for public viewing online on the city's website and at the city clerk's office. The 2025 budget, which includes 20 budgeted funds, will be finalized once Saline County certifies the total valuations on November 1.When the time came for community input and questions, Salinan John Blanchard addressed commissioners with four questions regarding the funding and contingencies for the river renewal project, the impact of recent building permit fee waivers and tax abatements, whether the budget accounts for inflation about the proposed 4% COLA increase for employees and the City of Salina's multi-million dollar line item for the Former Schilling Air Force Base cleanup.&nbsp;"On the second page of the staff report was a $50 million line item for SAFSAB, clean up. That's a $50 million line item," Blanchard said. "The latest 2022 audit showed a fund balance of $67 million in that in that fund. Salina City Commissioners approve 2025 Budget with slight increase from 2024

 </figure>“It’s energizing, you don’t really realize it’s a sack until you actually get up and see who you tackled,” the 6-foot-1, 202-pound Mustang junior said. “You hear your teammates screaming your name getting really hyped up. It’s a great feeling especially when it’s a clean tackle, it feels amazing.”Nobody is more eager for the 2024 season than Carter.“It’s been fun to get back into football after almost half a year,” he said. “We had practice twice a week and it was a blast getting to reconnect with my teammates. I can’t wait to see where my teammates are at and I have really high hopes for this season regarding how far we can go and the opportunities that we have to eventually get to state this year.”As a sophomore, Carter played in four games and notched 11 tackles, five of them solo, including a pair of tackles for loss.While a knee injury sidelined him for two weeks, Carter was energized in his return and had a real impact for the Mustangs last season.“He’s quick off the start and can make any pass rush move work,” junior DE Jesse Sternberger said. “He can stop the run efficiently and is a tough time for any offensive lineman, big or small.”“Lengthy, twitchy aggressive and fast paced,” junior safety Kory Serocki said. “He leads by example, always doing the right thing on and off the field and always locked in.”For all the production Carter is expected to bring off the field, all of that is the product of the work he puts in off the field.“He is a great competitor and a great friend and teammate,” junior DE Kaden Snyder said. “He might not have always been the fastest or the most athletic, but he works really hard and is getting stronger and faster everyday.”Carter said he’s been dialed in on hitting the weights this summer.“I've also been working on being more aggressive with hand fighting and more accurate with my hand placement,” Carter said.&nbsp;Those efforts have also been recognized by Carter's teammates in the trenches who will welcome him back into their hunting pack in 2024.“Connor has a big role on our team and he does his job really well,” senior lineman James MacKinney said. “He is relentless and never gives up on plays. I remember last year he ran me over in a game trying to chase down a ball.”“Hard-working, persistent Beast,” senior receiver Drew Schneweis said.“Connor is a dog out there. He has a great mentality and is very tough,” Mills said.A few things came to mind when Carter was asked what makes a good defensive end.“Being able to react to the guy across from you and to be able to redirect your body where it needs to go as fast as you can,” he said. “Also, knowing when to go screaming into the backfield and when to stay in your gap so no one can get through.”“Connor is a lead-by-example kind of guy and always does the right thing,” MacKinney said. “He shows up to every lifting session and he puts in the extra work off the field. He helps our whole D-line get better every time he is on the field. He’s improved a lot this summer. He's added more than 15 pounds of muscle and has improved his techniques tenfold.”While many would be happy to simply be an impact player at the high school level, Carter hopes to hone his skills someday at the collegiate level.“It’s something that I have been thinking a lot about these past couple weeks,” Carter said. “I can’t wait to start putting myself out there to hopefully get some offers from different colleges.”The Mustangs open their 2024 campaign against the cross-town rival Salina South Cougars on Friday, September 6 at Salina Stadium.
