K-State Research and Extension News Service

K-State Research and Extension, in partnership with the Kansas Department of Agriculture, is offering online classes to help people earn the necessary approval to sell wild morel mushrooms.

The classes will be offered online through Zoom twice on March 21, the first class from noon to 1 p.m., and a second class from 6-7 p.m.

Registration for the classes is now open at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/foodsafety">https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/foodsafety</a>&nbsp;and costs $5. Participants will receive the Zoom link for the training after registering.

Morel mushrooms grow in the wild but can be hard to find. For that reason, they are highly favored among chefs and mushroom enthusiasts. False morels include a number of species that look similar but are actually poisonous.

The classes are intended to help ensure that wild harvested mushrooms sold as morels in the state of Kansas are safe to consume. Current regulations under KDA’s food safety and lodging program require that mushrooms picked in the wild for sale must be individually inspected for safety by a registered mushroom identifier.

Upon completing the class -- which includes passing an online exam -- participants will be recognized as registered morel identifiers in Kansas to meet this regulation.

Two teens were injured in an accident just before 8a.m. Friday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Mason Max&nbsp;Holcom, 17, Marquette, was northbound on Old 81 at Farrelly Road two miles south of Salina.

The driver failed to yield when attempting a left turn. A southbound 2009 Toyota Camry driven by Daniel Smith, 16, Salina, struck the pickup. 

EMS transported&nbsp;Holcom, Smith and a passenger in the Toyota identified as Alexander Joseph&nbsp;Christensen, 17, Salina, to Salina Regional Health Center. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

910KINA Saturday Morning Show lineup

On February 22, 2024, Deputies responded to the 2000 block of E North Street in Saline County for a theft that had occurred sometime between February 15th and 16th, 2024.

 Items stolen included multiple copper wires, 12ft 2/0 Yellow insulated Grounds, 12 ft and 20ft 4/0 orange insulated MACs. The Grounds and MACs had screw clamps attached to clamp on power lines. The total loss is estimated in excess of $4,500.

Twenty-two student-created businesses competed at the YEC held during the first week of March. The stakes were high because the first place winner automatically moves on to the Kansas Entrepreneurship Challenge (KEC).

Awards were based on the student’s total score for their executive summary, trade show presentation, and four-minute presentation. First place winner earns entry into the KEC. Second and third place finishers are encouraged to apply for a wildcard entry. Approximately 15 wildcard applications from across the state of Kansas are selected to compete at the KEC.

This year’s Salina YEC prize money was $500 for first place, $350 for second place and $200 for third place. There was also a People’s Choice award ($50 downtown gift card) based on votes from the public after viewing trade show boards.

In 1948, the Supreme Court, in McCollum v. Board of Education, struck down voluntary religious education classes in Champaign, Illinois, public schools, saying the program violated separation of church and state.

In 1965, the United States landed its first combat troops in South Vietnam as 3,500 Marines arrived to defend the U.S. air base at Da Nang.

In 1971, silent film comedian Harold Lloyd died in Beverly Hills, California, at age 77.

Saline County Jail Bookings, March 8

Governor Laura Kelly announced Thursday that four modernization or expansion projects located in north central Kansas and totaling $127 million have been added to the IKE Development Pipeline.

This now clears the way for preliminary engineering work to begin on these four regional projects, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Among the projects selected is to reconstruct on new alignment K-4 and Bethany Drive at Lindsborg. The Lindsborg community has proactively advocated for this project. Corey Peterson, president of the Lindsborg City Council, joined Governor Kelly and others in making the IKE Development Pipeline announcements.

“The K-4 and Bethany Drive at Lindsborg project is a win-win for us locally and for the state of Kansas,” said Councilman Peterson. “Getting to this point is a clear example of what can be done when state and local governments come together and work towards a common goal.”

The north central Kansas Development Pipeline project types, description/scope and estimated cost are:

I-135/I-70 interchange&nbsp;expansion project, to improve interchange located in Saline County, $70 million.

U.S. 56 expansion project, add passing lanes from east of McPherson to east of Marion in McPherson County, $20 million. K-4 and Bethany Drive modernization project,&nbsp;reconstruct on new alignment at Lindsborg in McPherson County, $8 million. K-14 modernization project, reconstruct and add shoulders from K-140 north to I-70 west interchange in Ellsworth County, $29 million

Governor Kelly and Kansas Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed announced the 2024 Development Pipeline projects earlier today in the Kansas Statehouse. A total of 17 projects totaling $932 million from across the state were moved into the pipeline.

“These highway projects tackle long-standing transportation needs across the state – improving safety, expanding economic development opportunities and strengthening our communities,” Governor Kelly said. “My administration is committed to making short- and long-term infrastructure improvements to benefit future generations of Kansans.”

Secretary Reed said input from Kansans helped determine what investments were of the highest priority to rural and urban communities. He said the selection process is flexible to meet economic needs and is based on engineering data, local consultation and geographic distribution.

Four north central Kansas highway projects added to IKE Development Pipeline

Salina firefighters responded to a house fire early Friday morning in east Salina.&nbsp;

Earlier this morning at approximately 4 a.m., Friday, March 8, Salina firefighters were called to the 1500 block of Louise Lane for a home fully engulfed in flames. According to SFD all three occupants of the home were outside when firefighters arrived on the scene.&nbsp;

Crews began protecting exposure and began a defensive fire attack. Once the bulk of the fire was knocked down, crews went into the interior and extinguished the remaining flames.&nbsp;

According to Salina Fire Marshal Joe Kvacik, the fire is still under investigation, please avoid the area and allow the remaining crews space to work.

“Improvements made to our aviation infrastructure are vital to local economies, even in rural parts of Kansas,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “These enhancements ensure that no matter where they are in the state, businesses and communities have every opportunity to grow and prosper.”

The Kansas Department of Transportation’s Division of Aviation received 135 applications seeking more than $84 million for projects in this round of KAIP grants. The selected projects focus on pavement preservation, safety, and air ambulance accessibility.

“These general aviation airport improvements couldn’t happen without local partners and KDOT working together,”&nbsp;said Kansas Transportation Secretary Calvin Reed. “Programs like this help Kansans have access to renewed and reliable transportation options available to them in every region of the state.”

Local matching funds are required, though the amount varies depending on the project. With the matching local funds, the total KAIP project value is more than $34 million.

Governor Kelly announces more than $14M to improve 37 Kansas airports

At Salina Public Schools (SPS), if a tornado warning begins during the school day, students and staff will take refuge in their building’s storm shelter. Once they relocate to the storm shelters, exterior doors of the school building may be locked and entry into the building is not guaranteed.

When a tornado warning has been announced, the district encourages parents to seek shelter and to wait until after the warning has been lifted before coming to the school. The district will use the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usd305.com/departments/public_information/mass_notification" target="_blank">School Messenger rapid notification system</a>&nbsp;to update parents by text, email and phone.

During tornado warnings, school buses will arrive at the nearest school where students will take cover in that building's storm shelter. Once emergency officials have issued an “all clear,” bus routes will resume and students will be returned safely home.

In an executive session Thursday morning, Salina City Commissioners identified the special legal counsel who will represent the city in the Cozy Inn v. City of Salina federal lawsuit.&nbsp;

In a unanimous decision, city commissioners agreed to authorize the city manager, Mike Schrage, to engage the law firm of <a href="https://www.fwlaw.com/">Fairfield and Woods P.C</a>. of Denver, Colorado as the legal defense counsel in the case of the Cozy Inn v. City of Salina.&nbsp;

UPDATED: City commission names legal defense counsel for Cozy Inn vs. City of Salina

&nbsp;In its 40th year, the 2024 Salina Spring Poetry Series features a lineup of accomplished poets who will read in downtown Salina. In-person readings will occur at 7 pm on Tuesdays in April at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave).&nbsp;

The series is sponsored by Salina Arts &amp; Humanities and was curated by Traci Brimhall, Kansas Poet Laureate. Brimhall selected poets with a broad range of perspectives including those of a spoken word poet, a poet whose work is centered on the body, trauma, and the pharmaceutical industry, and the founder of the Salina Spring Poetry Series. Admission to each reading will be $5 cash at the door and free for students with ID.&nbsp;

“Salina Arts &amp; Humanities has been honored to present poetry to Salina over the last forty years,” said Brad Anderson, Executive Director of Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. “Over the decades Salina has been enriched through the diversity of voices that explore our sense of place and reflect the human spirit.”&nbsp;

“It’s so incredible to be a part of celebrating 40 years of this series in Salina,” says Brimhall. “I'm so grateful for the celebration of different voices in Kansas poetry, and I'm so glad that this year's anniversary happens when there are five Tuesday's in the month, so we can hear even more great poems.”&nbsp;

The lineup of poets for the 2024 Salina Poetry Series includes:&nbsp;

Cash Hollistah is a national hip-hop recording artist, musician, spoken word poet, arts educator, and community activist based in Salina, Kansas. Hollistah's musical projects, "#cashmob." (2016) &amp; "#cashmob. 2" (2017), and live performances have earned him spots on high-profile stages, notably South by Southwest (SXSW), and billing with acts such as Common, Shaggy, Kirk Franklin, and T.I. Hollistah also founded/hosted the former poetry series, "ONE MIC", and occasionally teaches "Poetry &amp; Hip-Hop" specialty classes to students in central Kansas. Currently, Hollistah sits on the board of directors of the Kansas Music Hall of Fame. Cash Hollistah performs Tuesday, April 2, at 7 pm at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave).&nbsp;

Hadara Bar-Nadav is an NEA fellow and award-winning author of several books of poetry, among them The Animal Is Chemical, The New Nudity, Lullaby (with Exit Sign), The Frame Called Ruin, and A Glass of Milk to Kiss Goodnight, as well as the chapbooks Fountain and Furnace and Show Me Yours. She is also co-author with Michelle Boisseau of the best-selling textbook Writing Poems, 8th ed. Her poems have appeared in The American Poetry Review, The Believer, Kenyon Review, The New Republic, Ploughshares, Poetry, Tin House, and elsewhere. Hadara is a Professor of English and teaches in the MFA program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Bar-Nadav reads Tuesday, April 9, at 7 pm at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave).&nbsp;

Laura Lee Washburn is a University Professor, the Director of Creative Writing at Pittsburg State University in Kansas, the author of The Book of Stolen Images (Meadowlark) which was awarded the Nelson Book Award from the Kansas Authors Club, This Good Warm Place: 10th Anniversary Expanded Edition (March Street) and Watching the Contortionists (Palanquin Chapbook Prize), and the Editor-in-Chief of Poetry Cooperative/Heartland: Poetry of Love, Resistance, and Solidarity. Her book Arteries is forthcoming this May. Harbor Review’s Washburn Prize is named in her honor. Washburn reads Tuesday, April 16, at 7 pm at Ad Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave).&nbsp;

Bradford Tice is the author of two books of poetry: Rare Earth (New Rivers Press, 2013), which was named the winner of the 2011 Many Voices Project and a 2014 Debut-litzer finalist, and What the Night Numbered (Trio House Press, 2015), winner of the 2014 Trio Award. His poetry and fiction have appeared in such periodicals as The Atlantic Monthly, North American Review, The American Scholar, Epoch, as well as in Best American Short Stories 2008. His poetry was also selected as the winner of Prairie Schooner’s 2009 Edward Stanley Award. He currently teaches at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln. Tice reads Tuesday, April 23, at 7 pm at Red Fern Booksellers (106 S Santa Fe Ave).&nbsp;

In the decades since Patricia Traxler moved to Salina from San Diego, she has been active in the cultural life of the city. The founder and longtime director of Salina's Spring Poetry Series, she also taught at Kansas Wesleyan University for more than three decades. Traxler is the author of four volumes of poetry (most recently, Naming the Fires); a novel, Blood; and a short-story collection, In the Skin. She is currently at work on a book of essays, Don't Ask Me, and a volume of her collected poems, as yet untitled. 2024 Salina Spring Poetry Series announced for 40th anniversary

On March 7, 1965, a march by civil rights demonstrators was violently broken up at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, by state troopers and a sheriff’s posse in what came to be known as “Bloody Sunday.”

In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell received a U.S. patent for his telephone.

In 1911, President William Howard Taft ordered 20,000 troops to patrol the U.S.-Mexico border in response to the Mexican Revolution.

In 1916, Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) had its beginnings in Munich, Germany, as an airplane engine manufacturer.

In 1926, the first successful trans-Atlantic radio-telephone conversations took place between New York and London.

In 1936, Adolf Hitler ordered his troops to march into the Rhineland, thereby breaking the Treaty of Versailles and the Locarno Pact.

In 1945, during World War II, U.S. forces crossed the Rhine at Remagen, Germany, using the damaged but still usable Ludendorff Bridge.

In 1975, the U.S. Senate revised its filibuster rule, allowing 60 senators to limit debate in most cases, instead of the previously required two-thirds of senators present.

In 1994, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled that a parody that pokes fun at an original work can be considered “fair use.” (The ruling concerned a parody of the Roy Orbison song “Oh, Pretty Woman” by the rap group 2 Live Crew.)

Stutzmans Garden Center will set up its pop-up garden shop for one more year at the corner of W. Cloud and Ninth Street in Salina.

Jacki Harper, office manager for Stutzmans said they have the lease for one more year. Kansas Wesleyan University, which owns the lot, plans to use the lot for parking, according to Harper.

"Salina is one of if not our largest satellite location," Harper said. "We will definitely still be in Salina."

Harper said Stutzmans is considering several locations in central Salina for its future home.

“The university has some long-term discussions going on regarding the space,” said Brad Salois, director of marketing and communications at Kansas Wesleyan University. “But nothing will be taking place immediately.”

According to its website, Stutzmans opens just after the last frost of spring, which typically occurs at the end of April or the beginning of May. The garden center stays open until just before the first frost of fall.&nbsp; 

Stutzmans carries flowers and vegetables in the spring, heat-loving plants in the summer, and mums and more for fall. All plants are grown locally in the unpredictable Kansas weather.

"We will definitely still be in Salina."Harper said Stutzmans is considering several locations in central Salina for its future home.“The university has some long-term discussions going on regarding the space,” said Brad Salois, director of marketing and communications at Kansas Wesleyan University. “But nothing will be taking place immediately.”According to its website, Stutzmans opens just after the last frost of spring, which typically occurs at the end of April or the beginning of May. The garden center stays open until just before the first frost of fall.&nbsp; Stutzmans carries flowers and vegetables in the spring, heat-loving plants in the summer, and mums and more for fall.
