Thursday, June 13 marked the 38th SM Hanson Festival Jam, which unfortunately had to end several hours ahead of schedule due to heavy rain in the area. 

Although the park will reopen today at 10 a.m., due to the nature of the event and the schedules of the performers, SM Hanson Festival Jam itself will not be rescheduled.

Being in its 38th year, SM Hanson Festival Jam as well as the 48th Smoky Hill River Festival, have an important place in the lives of many area residents and their families. Festival attendee Ami Allison spoke of her family’s relationship with the event.

 “We buy festival shirts every year, all of the family pictures are in our festival shirts in the summertime," Allison said.&nbsp;

The Allisons have been using the event as a family reunion for around fifty years, returning time and time again to enjoy the music and to look back fondly on years past.

The SM Hanson Festival Jam certainly has a history of fond memories and great music, but the event is no stranger to severe weather putting a damper on things either. 

Salina Arts and Humanities Assistant Director Anna Pauscher Morawitz told Salina Post that the last time this had happened was as recently as 2021. Despite SM Hanson Festival Jam’s abrupt ending last night, the rest of the Smoky Hill River Festival will continue as scheduled throughout the rest of this weekend.

The 38th SM Hanson Festival Jam is delayed due to weather.

At 6:41 p.m. event emcees told the crowd of thousands the show would resume at 7:30 p.m.

From cool drinks near a body of water to late-night bonfires in the backyard, one aspect of the Kansas summer remains the same: triple-digit heat indexes.

More than ten thousand residents and visitors plan to gather in Oakdale Park tomorrow for the annual Smoky Hill River Festival, but forecasters at the U.S. National Weather Service Wichita (NWS Wichita) predict heat indices to rise well above 100 degrees.

Meteorologists predict a 107-degree heat index in Salina tomorrow afternoon, right at the beginning of the SM Hanson Festival Jam. On Wednesday, June 12, NWS Wichita meteorologists issued a heat advisory lasting until 7 p.m. Thursday, June 12.

Heat-related illnesses can vary from minor ailments, such as a heat rash, to hospitalization from heat stroke. The Kansas Department of Health Environment (KDHE) stated in its <a href="https://keap.kdhe.ks.gov/Ephtm/EphtContent/documents/Toolkit%2020140519.pdf">"Kansas Extreme Heat Toolkit"</a> that early signs of heat exhaustion include dizziness, thirst, fatigue, headache, nausea, visual disturbances, weakness, anxiety, confusion and vomiting.

Those with early signs of heat exhaustion should stop any activity, relocate to a shaded or indoor area and drink electrolyte-containing fluids like sports drinks, fruit juices or water.

KDHE staff also advise that older residents or those with preexisting health concerns are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses and should take precautionary measures before attending an outdoor event during a heat advisory.

UPDATED: 38th SM Hanson Festival Jam ends early due to rain

This is day 3 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Kansas wheat farmers are relieved to have a crop to harvest this year, remaining optimistic and pleasantly surprised with the good-yielding, good-quality crop, even as harvest progresses into areas where fields were impacted by an inconsistent mix of&nbsp;freeze damage, stripe rust pressure, rain and hail.&nbsp;

Harvest delivery is in full swing at Ardent Mills, which unloaded 150 trucks at its facility in Newton on Tuesday, June 11. Harvest is roughly 10 percent complete and Pam Bowles, assistant administrative manager, expects another week of peak harvest.&nbsp;

Farmers delivering wheat to the mill are reporting yields ranging from 40 bushels per acre up to 70 bushels per acre. At the mill, test weights are steady around 62 pounds per bushel and the protein average is 11.3 percent.&nbsp;

“Everyone seems to be in a good mood,” Bowles said. “We are planning for an above-average year this year.”&nbsp;

Troy Smith, who farms near Walton in Harvey County, is also pleasantly surprised with this year’s harvest, having started cutting his KS Zenda earlier this week — on track with normal pace. He attributes using cow manure as his primary fertilizer and heavy moisture over Thanksgiving weekend as keys to this year’s success.

“What made this year so good was the snow that came during the Iowa State/K-State football game, honestly!” he said.&nbsp;

His average yield is 67 bushels per acre with average test weight of 60.8 pounds per bushel and average protein at 13.13 percent.&nbsp;

Also in Harvey County, James Mosiman described this year’s harvest as a “night and day difference” compared to last year, speaking volumes about what good weather, sound farming practices and resilient varieties can produce when everything comes together.&nbsp;

The Mosiman family started harvesting on Thursday, June 6, about a week ahead of schedule. Beyond a delay from an inch of rain over last weekend, they have not encountered many challenges this year. He reported seeing small amounts of stripe rust, a common obstacle for many farmers this year.&nbsp;

Mosiman happily mentioned fields are yielding a promising 60 bushels per acre. Reflecting on the culmination of months of hard work, he summed this year’s harvest up by saying, “It’s just nice to cut a crop.”&nbsp;

In neighboring Reno County, Brandon Frederick is helping his grandfather VJ Blubaugh harvest wheat near Burrton. Storms the week before Memorial Day weekend blew over pivots on their irrigated wheat. On Thursday, June 13, they were cutting in a pocket where one side of the road got an inch of rain, but the other side had nothing more than sprinkle.&nbsp;

The operation grazes a lot of their wheat, which is in crop rotation with sudan. This year, they put out 105 head on the ground for 120 days, ending the grazing season with an average daily gain of 3.0 pounds.&nbsp;

Both grandfather and grandson are thrilled to harvest a crop this year, after having to swath the entirety of their wheat crop last year. Fields planted to WestBred varieties are yielding between 40 and 70 bushels per acre, with test weights of 61-62 pounds per bushel and proteins ranging from 12 to 12.3 percent.&nbsp;

“As much as I love having food for my cows, I love seeing a cash crop come up and go all the way to harvest,” Frederick said.&nbsp;

The harvest crew was hustling to repair combines and keep cutting ahead of forecasted thunderstorms in Barton County, according to Dean Stoskopf, who farms near Hoisington. His first two fields — both planted to PlainsGold Whistler — had yields of 45 and 50 bushels per acre. Moisture is between 11.5 and 14.5 percent with test weights ranging from 59.5 to 61.5 pounds per bushel and protein hitting 11.5 to 14 percent.&nbsp;

Yields are better than expected, but Stoskopf noted he is cutting some of his best fields first and expects yields to go down as harvest progresses. Within fields, he remarked that prolonged drought conditions and freeze damage caused a lot of inconsistency with stands, noting he feels like he’s cutting 60-bushel wheat or five-bushel wheat with nothing in between. Still, he feels optimistic after consecutive years of near-total crop failures and expects to be done cutting within two weeks — hopefully just in time to watch the grandkids show at the county fair the last week of June.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We have cut more wheat in the last day and a half than we did all last year,” Stoskopf said. “So far we’ve been pleasantly surprised with yields, but fields are highly variable.”&nbsp;

How about a free train ride for the family? It’s possible this summer, as the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad joins other popular tourism attractions across Kansas as a participant in the <a href="https://sunflowersummer.org/">“Sunflower Summer” program. </a>

As of May 24, school-aged Kansas kids and their parents can ride the A&amp;SV’s Flint Hills Express free of charge.

According to Julie Roller Weeks, the Director of the Abilene Conventions and Visitor’s Bureau, Sunflower Summer is an initiative to encourage Kansas families with school-aged children to discover and appreciate the wonders of Kansas while supporting the state’s tourism economy.

The program is sponsored by Kansas Tourism, a division of the Kansas Department of Commerce. In addition to the A&amp;SV, the Dickinson County Heritage Center and the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum are participating in the program.

“This is an excellent way for families with school aged kids to spend a day in Abilene, taking in the colorful history of our town for little to no cost,” said Roller Weeks, who added that the program offers a way for area families to “staycation” in Abilene. “This opportunity allows us to welcome Kansas families to our area and provide them with an unforgettable experience.”

Roller Weeks said that eligible Kansas families can download the Sunflower Summer App at SunflowerSummer.org to claim tickets to participating venues. The 2024 Sunflower Summer season will run from May 24 to August 11.

“We’re really happy to participate in this program and support our museum partners here in town,” said Ross Boelling, President and Manager of the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. “We were recently named the state’s official heritage railroad, and we hope Sunflower Summer introduces our railroad to families across the state.”

Boelling specified that the free train rides are specifically for the A&amp;SV’s Flint Hills Express runs and are not applicable for the railroad’s Smoky Valley Limited dinner trains or special charters.

Hello and happy Thursday everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

Good news for Kansas City Royals fans, on Wednesday an MRI revealed that Hunter Renfroe's left big toe is not fractured, the team initially announced it was broken by a foul ball.

Renfroe was hurt Monday when he fouled off a pair of pitches against left-hander Carlos Rodón in the third inning. The outfielder got off to a slow start this season but had raised his batting average to .200 with six homers and 26 RBIs.

Kansas City said Renfroe is expected to miss two to three weeks, down from six to eight weeks.

Speaking of the Royals, Jose Trevino, Gleyber Torres and Giancarlo Stanton all homered last night as part of an 11-5 rout as the Royals dropped the series to the Yankees.

New York now boasts a major league best 49-21 record, the Royals will get one last crack at the pinstripe unit this afternoon at 1:10

And finally, last night also saw game three of this year’s NBA finals between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks, and thanks to a late surge the Celtics were able to pull away to take a 3-0 series lead

Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown scored 31 and 30 respectively to avoid what would have been the biggest collapse in an NBA finals game this century, staving off a 21-point comeback bid. Boston can take the series in game four on Friday

Salina Parks and Recreation announced yesterday on social media that the playground replacement at Oxbow Park is almost complete. Salina Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Hammond said the new playground pieces were installed at the end of May. 

"The original authorization from the City Commission was in December of last year, and then we ordered it, and it arrived," said Hammond. "We ordered that with installation included from the company we purchased it from."

Hammond said Oxbow Park is one of several park playgrounds being replaced as part of the City of Salina's Playground Improvement Plan.

"As we replace playgrounds, some of our top priorities are ensuring they are fully ADA accessible," Hammond said. "Anything that has a sand surface is not fully ADA accessible. We want to ensure that we replace that with rubber mulch, a wood fiber mulch, or a pore-in-place surface."

Hammond said the playground replaced at Oxbow Park was 26 years old.

Over the next two weeks, parks and recreation staff will add rubber mulch to the playground surface. Hammond said the new playground will have equipment for ages outside of the standard age range. 

"Many of our playground equipment in town is designed for ages five to 12. This playground has pieces for ages five to 12 and two to five," Hammond said. 

Salina residents won't have to wait long for the playground to be open to the public.

"I anticipate we have a reopening, weather dependent, for July 1," Hammond said. "That's my goal."

Salina Parks and Rec. replaces 26-year-old equipment at local park

&nbsp;As Festival-goers prepare to enjoy the Smoky Hill River Festival’s “Epic Arts Party” this week, here are some reminders about the event and what to bring and what to leave at home:

The Smoky Hill River Festival occurs in scenic Oakdale Park, one of Salina’s oldest and most beautiful spaces. To lessen the impact of more than 60,000 Festival-goers and provide a comfortable experience for everyone, the Festival asks for cooperation during the event.

Admission to the River Festival is by weekend wristband ($15 in advance through close of business on June 11 and $20 at the gate) or daily wristband ($10, sold only at the gate). 

Children 11 and under get in free. General Festival hours are Thursday, June 13, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cash ONLY.

Parking is free and available in the lots adjacent to the Tony’s Pizza Events Center and in the general vicinity of the Festival or on public streets where permissible. No unauthorized vehicles, skateboards, or bikes are allowed in Oakdale Park.

Limited accessible parking is available for those with placards in the lot directly north of the 4th Street Bridge (the former Salina Journal parking lot, along the river).

Volunteers reporting for early shifts should come to the Mulberry Street or Tony’s Pizza Events Center bridges wearing their weekend admission wristbands for security to see and check.

Daily and weekend admission wristbands will be available for purchase at the Mulberry, Fourth Street, or Tony’s Pizza Events Center entrance bridges or the north Oakdale gates, but not at the Kenwood Bridge entrance. Festival-goers may enter over Kenwood Bridge only if they have already purchased and are wearing their wristband. Advance-price four-day wristbands are on sale at all regional Wristband Retailer locations until the close of business on Tuesday, June 11.

Coolers with snacks and beverages are permitted on the Festival grounds. No glass containers of any kind are allowed.

Guest services are available at the River Festival, including Information Booths, the EMS First Aid Center, the Baby Station tent, Lost &amp; Found, Ident-A-Kid, public restrooms, mobility services, and ATMs on site.

· Mobility carts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for rent near the shuttle drop-off by the Statue of Liberty. The carts will be rented for $10 an hour with a two-hour minimum.

· Independent Connection/OCCK staff are available to support accessibility and mobility questions.

· Presbyterian Manor is offering a free “wave and ride” shuttle service through the park to support access to all of the most trafficked areas of the event.

Salina Arts and Humanities — Smoky Hill River Festival reminders

Yesterday evening at about 6:08 p.m., Wednesday, June 13, Saline County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a roll-over injury crash on U.S. 81 Highway just north of Interstate 70.

The 48-year-old resident was driving south on Highway 81 when, at milepost 159, the driver's side rear tire of the silver 2010 Toyota Corolla blew out.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said that once the tire blew, the driver lost control of the vehicle and entered the west ditch.

"She ended up going off from the ditch and rolling over," Soldan said. "She went off the west side of the road, rolled down back in there pretty good, with pretty good damage to the car."

Soldan said she was the only occupant of the Corolla and sustained bruises and scrapes from the car rolling multiple times.

When EMS services arrived, the woman refused treatment but later drove herself to a local care center to check her injuries.

Saline County resident injured in roll-over crash on U.S. Highway 81

Salina native and former Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court, Lawton Nuss, has been selected to serve on the board of directors of All Rise, the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing treatment courts and other justice innovations for individuals impacted by substance use and mental health disorders.

Since 1994, All Rise has championed evidence-based justice responses that improve public safety while addressing public health. All Rise provides training and technical assistance to over 4,000 treatment courts in the United States, including over 1,000 veterans treatment courts. Treatment courts are now considered the most successful justice intervention for leading individuals with substance use and mental health disorders to lives of health, stability, and recovery.

“All Rise is honored to welcome Chief Justice Nuss to the board of directors,” said All Rise Chief Executive Officer Carson Fox. “His legal acumen and passion for ensuring veterans receive the benefits and treatment they have earned will be critical as we expand support for justice-involved veterans.”

Chief Justice Nuss brings over three decades of legal experience and leadership to All Rise. A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Chief Justice Nuss graduated from the University of Kansas Law School in 1982. He joined the Kansas Supreme Court in 2002 and served as Chief Justice from 2010 until his retirement in 2019.

During his tenure, Chief Justice Nuss helped launch the state’s first veterans treatment courts, programs specifically for veterans whose involvement in the justice system is linked to substance use and/or mental health disorders.

“It has been my honor to serve the people of Kansas and to help strengthen our response to veterans in need,” said Chief Justice Nuss. “I look forward to continuing this work on the national stage with All Rise as we continue the important mission of ensuring no veteran is left behind.”

Chief Justice Nuss will serve a six-year term on the board of directors. His tenure began on May 23, 2024, when he was elected during RISE24, the annual conference convened by All Rise, now considered the largest conference in the nation on the intersection of addiction, mental health, and justice reform.

All Rise is the leading training, membership, and advocacy organization for advancing justice system responses to individuals with substance use and mental health disorders. 

All Rise impacts every stage of the justice system, from first contact with law enforcement to corrections and reentry and works with public health leaders to improve treatment outcomes for justice-involved individuals.

From nutritionists with Pizza Hut to the chefs at Yale University to influential personal trainers, Ron Suppes shared his western Kansas farmer savvy to conversations across the grain industry value chain during his time as chairman of the Wheat Foods Council (WFC). In early June, he passed off the leadership baton — just ahead of harvest — during the organization’s annual meeting, but not before he helped facilitate a bit more education on how wheat is developed and grown.

“I really enjoy the ability to talk to different industries connected with wheat,” he said. “It’s not just about wheat farmers, but millers and bakers. You get a really good perspective of what’s going on out there in the industry and I’m able to spread the word about what’s involved with wheat breeding and farming.”

About 30 WFC members attended the summer meeting in Manhattan, Kansas, where the group explored the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, the Hal Ross Flour Mill and the IGP Institute, along with learning from some of the brightest minds in the global wheat industry about the latest in wheat breeding technologies and genetic studies.

“The meeting was great and well planned out,” Suppes said. “We showcased what we have in Manhattan, and it was very worthwhile. Even for the people who have been there before, every time you go through the north campus complex, you pick up and learn something else. The WFC does try to do that wherever they go — visiting flour mills or seeing new scientific techniques. It’s not all feel good; it’s also education.”

A long-time industry leader, Suppes assumed his role as WFC chairman in June 2023. The organization was established by wheat producers in 1972 to promote the entire category of wheat-based foods, including baked goods, cereal, crackers, pasta, sweet goods and tortillas. Since then, the organization has established itself as a leading source of science-based information on wheat and grain foods nutrition.

Membership is made up of millers, bakers, ingredient suppliers, equipment companies, state wheat commissions and wheat farmers like Suppes. Suppes and his wife Shirley, along with son Shayne, farm roughly 12,000 acres in west central Kansas. Wheat and sorghum make up their primary crops. Suppes has served as a Kansas wheat commissioner since 2003, serving as chairman in 2013-2014, and serves as chairman of the Kansas Wheat Commission Research Foundation.

He has also traveled extensively overseas with U.S. Wheat Associates as a member of the USW Board of Directors, having served as chairman of the wheat industry’s export market development arm from 2007-2008.

The culmination of these experiences combined with his producer frame of mind helped focus his chairman’s agenda of building connections across the entire wheat value chain. That work entails not only connecting with leaders at major restaurant chains or chefs responsible for university food systems, but also committing to a shared mission — providing information and education about the production and nutritional value of wheat.

“The thing I still stress to industry is that we’re all in this together,” Suppes said, reiterating the need to stay involved and for the wheat industry, as a whole, to work together.&nbsp;

At the end of the organization’s time in Manhattan, Suppes turned over the gavel to the next year’s chairman — Kent Juliot with Ardent Mills. While he looks forward to a bit more time in his rocking chair — well, maybe after wheat harvest ends — he said he still plans on staying involved with the WFC as past chairman and with other government and industry committees.

“They’re going to keep me busy,” he said. “And when I’m not doing that, in my spare time, I’m going to try and grow some wheat, too.”

Wheat Scoop: Kansas Farmer Ron Suppes passes leadership baton

This year, Rolling Hills Zoo proudly marks its 25th Anniversary—a significant milestone in its storied history. On October 27, 1999, the gates swung open to welcome the first 255 visitors to a place that would become one of the region's top tourist attractions, bringing to life the dream of Charlie Walker.

Charlie Walker, a prominent Salina businessman, entrepreneur, and avid animal lover, never initially intended to establish a zoo. The story began with the Main Barn, constructed to house his impressive collection of Belgian draft horses, the largest in North America. This unique gathering started to attract curious visitors, and soon, Charlie added exotic animals to the collection, drawing even larger crowds. The undeniable popularity of these animals convinced Charlie that Salina needed a zoo, setting in motion the creation of what would become Rolling Hills Zoo.

In 2019, Rolling Hills Zoo created a display of the zoo's history, including its foundation, who started it and some images to coincide, so the Earl Bane Gallery brings that idea back to the Rolling Hills Zoo museum to celebrate 25 years of history.

"It was our first chance to really tell the Rolling Hills Zoo story in this fashion. It's a question that we get asked numerous times about, 'How did the zoo come to be?' and where it's located and everything. So this is our way of being able to tell that story," said Linda Henderson, the communications director at Rolling Hills Zoo.

Building the zoo was a labor of love and dedication. The vision and name evolved many times before and after the official opening.&nbsp;As Rolling Hills Zoos&nbsp;celebrates&nbsp;its 25th anniversary, a special exhibit in the Earl Bane Gallery offers a fascinating retrospective. This exhibit captures the zoo's humble beginnings with just a barn and a prairie and chronicles the journey to the present day.

Guests will be captivated by photographs of the zoo's first residents, significant&nbsp;milestones, and the journey undertaken in building the zoo and wildlife museum. &nbsp;One of the highlights of this exhibit is Charlie Walker's calliope, which was a star attraction in parades during the early years of the zoo.

According to event organizers, the ceremony will feature the disposal of thousands of worn and tattered flags.&nbsp;&nbsp;All members of the public are welcomed to attend.<h2>More about Flag Day</h2>This was the resolution adopted by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777. The resolution was made following the report of a special committee which had been assigned to suggest the flag’s design.A flag of this design was first carried into battle on September 11, 1777, in the Battle of the Brandywine. The American flag was first saluted by foreign naval vessels on February 14, 1778, when the Ranger, bearing the Stars and Stripes and under the command of Captain Paul Jones, arrived in a French port. The flag first flew over a foreign territory in early 1778 at Nassau, Bahama Islands, where Americans captured a British fort.Observance of the adoption of the flag was not soon in coming, however. Although there are many claims to the first official observance of Flag Day, all but one took place more than an entire century after the flag’s adoption in 1777.The first claim was from a Hartford, Conn., celebration during the first summer of 1861. In the late 1800s, schools all over the United States held Flag Day programs to contribute to the Americanization of immigrant children, and the observance caught on with individual communities.The most recognized claim, however, comes from New York. On June 14, 1889, Professor George Bolch, principal of a free kindergarten for the poor of New York City, had his school hold patriotic ceremonies to observe the anniversary of the Flag Day resolution. This initiative attracted attention from the State Department of Education, which arranged to have the day observed in all public schools thereafter.Soon the state legislature passed a law making it the responsibility of the state superintendent of public schools to ensure that schools hold observances for Lincoln’s Birthday, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day and Flag Day. In 1897, the governor of New York ordered the displaying of the flag over all public buildings in the state, an observance considered by some to be the first official recognition of the anniversary of the adoption of the flag outside of schools.Another claim comes from Philadelphia. In 1893, the Society of Colonial Dames succeeded in getting a resolution passed to have the flag displayed on all of the city’s public buildings. Elizabeth Duane Gillespie, a direct descendant of Benjamin Franklin and the president of the Colonial Dames of Pennsylvania, that same year tried to get the city to call June 14 Flag Day. Resolutions by women were not granted much notice, however, and it was not until May 7, 1937, that Pennsylvania became the first state to establish the June 14 Flag Day as a legal holiday. Flag Day is a nationwide observance today, but Pennsylvania is the only state that recognizes it as a legal holiday.Bernard J. Cigrand, a school teacher in Waubeka, Wisconsin, reportedly spent years trying to get Congress to declare June 14 as a national holiday. Although his attempts failed, the day was widely observed. “Father of Flag Day” honors have been given to William T. Kerr, who was credited with founding the American Flag Day Association in 1888 while still a schoolboy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.Both President Wilson, in 1916, and President Coolidge, in 1927, issued proclamations asking for June 14 to be observed as the National Flag Day. But it wasn’t until August 3, 1949, that Congress approved the national observance, and President Harry Truman signed it into law.
