Late last night, two Salina residents making their way west to Culver, Kan., realized they were heading the wrong way on North Lightville Road and attempted a three-point turn. 

At some point in the turn, the two men in the truck realized the truck became stuck in the ditch, and after attempting to pull the white 2008 2500 Dodge pickup from the ditch, it injured one of the truck's passengers when it rolled over him.

Saline County Sheriff's Office Undersheriff Brent Melander said that at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 11, deputies arrived north of the intersection of Lightville and Armstrong Roads and met the two occupants of the pickup, a 36-year-old man and a 42-year-old man.

"While the deputy was there, he was going to, if needed, make arrangements to have the tow truck come out, but the two occupants of the vehicle said they had a friend of theirs' coming out from Salina," Melander said. "So a 53-year-old man arrived shortly after in his 1500 Dodge pickup truck."

Melander said the 53-year-old friend of the 2500 Dodge pickup owner then began attempting to free the vehicle from the ditch, but it only caused the white Dodge to go further into the grass and mud on the side of the dirt road.

Before the three men stopped the attempt to get the pickup unstuck, the 43-year-old man went into the ditch to get a closer look but unknowingly put himself in harm's way.

"Before they stopped, the 43-year-old white male from the original stuck truck, who was a passenger, originally fell down in the ditch and got run over by the 2500 stuck pickup truck," Melander said. "They decided to stop towing, and the deputy is like 'Well stop you got a guy underneath the truck,' and they're like 'What?' something similar to that. They get out and they find the 43-year-old male climbing out from underneath the stuck pickup truck."

The man was coherent and conversing with the Sheriff's Office deputy alongside the two other men. Still, he quickly began complaining about pain and the deputy called for emergency services to transport him to Salina Regional Health Center.

Melander said EMS ambulance staff recognized some severe injuries, and at the hospital, they found a significant spinal injury and a few more injuries in his shoulders and lower back.

Saline County Sheriff's Office deputies found no evidence of impaired driving or drug use in or around the trucks. Melander said the 43-year-old man will likely undergo surgery due to his injuries.

Salina resident hospitalized after stuck pickup runs him over in rural Saline County

The number of tornadoes and severe storms in the U.S. so far this year has been well above average.

There were nearly 6,300 severe storms reported in May, many concentrated in the Midwest and Great Plains,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/summary/" target="_blank">according to preliminary data</a>&nbsp;from the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center. That includes more than 570 tornadoes, the most recorded in recent years. That number continues to climb as the center updates its data.

It was the second-most active May for severe storms since 2004. The most active remains May 2011, the month a massive tornado tore through Joplin, Missouri.

The storms have resulted in 39 deaths this year, according to the Storm Prediction Center. Tornadoes in Oklahoma have killed eight people and demolished homes and businesses. In Iowa, a large tornado&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tornado-iowa-wind-farm-turbines-feb9913c3d53915ffa420e277af4bb6d" target="_blank">crumbled five massive wind turbines</a>&nbsp;and killed five.

A main reason for the activity was weather conditions that made it more likely for tornadoes to form, said Patrick Marsh, the chief of science and support at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

Throughout the spring, a pocket of cold air called a “trough” put winds from the Southwest across the middle of the country, Marsh said. Winds from the Southeast carried warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico closer to the ground.

The combination created a good environment for tornado-producing storms known as supercell thunderstorms.

“We’ve had ingredients in place for supercell thunderstorms over the Plains for pretty much the entire month of May,” Marsh said. “And when you have that many of these kinds of thunderstorms, inevitably you will have an increase in tornadoes as well.”

Three tornadoes this year ranked EF4, which is the second-highest ranking on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. This spring produced higher-ranking tornadoes than in recent years, Marsh said. But, this system is also based on the amount of damage caused, rather than just the size and strength of a tornado.

“If a tornado producing wind speeds equivalent to an EF5 – so 205 miles per hour or stronger – if it never hits a structure that has an engineer rating to withstand 205 mile per hour winds, we can't assign the rating of an EF5,” Marsh said.

The increased number of tornado reports could also be due in part to more available data.

An advancement in radar technology more than a decade ago allows weather trackers to better detect weak tornadoes by radar. Plus, there are more potential eyewitnesses with cameras, thanks to smartphones, and more structures that can be in the path of a tornado.

These are all factors to consider when comparing current and historical data, said Zack Leasor, the Missouri state climatologist.

“It's really hard to disentangle, is this a greater number of tornadoes themselves? Or are there just more buildings that can be damaged by those tornadoes? Are there more people out that can see those tornadoes, report those tornadoes with their smartphones?” Leasor said. “All of these kinds of characteristics go into those trends as well.”

Quincy Vagell started storm chasing across the Midwest and Great Plains in 2014. He said he often sends reports of what he sees to the National Weather Service.

“Sometimes storm chasers may be the first people on the scene, especially if it's in a very rural area where there's not a lot of people,” he said.

The activity this season allows him to choose which storms to chase. He said he tries to stay closer to Oklahoma, where he’s based.

“I've only seen, actually, two or three tornadoes this year, but I've had an active season,” Vagell said. “I've seen plenty of supercells, great storms and all that. So it's definitely been a busy season for me.”

A more active spring season for tornadoes is difficult to link directly to climate change, according to Marsh. However, warm and moist air in the wintertime could cause more tornadoes in off-peak times, he said.

Warmer weather earlier this year has opened the door to a longer season for severe storms in Missouri, Leasor said. There have been&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kcur.org/news/2024-05-30/missouri-is-having-one-of-its-most-active-tornado-seasons-on-record-whats-behind-the-numbers" target="_blank">184 tornado warnings in the state</a>&nbsp;this year so far. This is the fourth highest number of warnings for that timeframe since records began in 1986.

Marsh expects storm activity to be calmer in early June. Beyond that, it’s more uncertain, he said.

More tornadoes reported this year than usual; a look behind numbers

The newly elected&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academic-success-student-affairs/clubs-organizations/student-governing-association/">Student Governing Association</a>&nbsp;president and vice president at&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina</a>&nbsp;are ready to implement their ideas for the 2024-2025 school year.&nbsp;

Students at K-State Salina elected Keenan Lippert, junior in uncrewed aircraft systems flight and operations,&nbsp;Sabetha, as president and Stephen Watson, sophomore dual majoring in aviation maintenance management and professional pilot,&nbsp;Tomball, Texas, as vice president in the annual Student Governing Association, or SGA, campus elections. Lippert and Watson plan to focus their leadership efforts on maximizing student involvement on campus.&nbsp;

"We want to emphasize involvement and being a voice for students," Lippert said. "K-State Salina has a good culture of student involvement when it comes to clubs and service projects that benefit our community. We want to build upon that foundation and continue to make campus a productive environment for students to learn and develop leadership skills. We hope that this involvement will progress into ideas that bring new activities to the campus and connect students with one another."

Both students have been involved with K-State Salina's SGA this past year. Lippert held the role of secretary, and Watson was a senator and community service coordinator. This experience has allowed the duo to develop and learn more about their passions for serving the campus, its students and the broader community.

"I've always been huge on community service," Watson said. "Being the community service coordinator allowed me to exercise my passion and share that with other students. I think when students become a part of SGA, it allows them to have a large say in what happens around campus, which is a huge step in their professional careers because they can see how an organization runs and the difficult decisions that allow it to progress."

SGA at K-State Salina meets weekly to discuss and address the issues and concerns of campus. The meetings are open to all students, faculty and staff. The organization is responsible for filling many student leadership roles, including cabinet chairs that focus on different campus initiatives like programming events for students, diversity affairs and community service. SGA also nominates students to be senators to help have input and vote on matters of importance. This representation is diverse and includes many members studying different academic focuses.&nbsp;

"I think SGA is important because it gives our students a voice. It gives a reason for students to give input on important decisions involving this campus," Lippert said. "Stephen and I are students ourselves and are excited to be able to support the campus to the best of our ability."

This is day 2 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Rain is an ironic concern for this year’s wheat crop, but producers are asking Mother Nature to hold off just a bit so they can get a quickly ripening crop out of the field and into the bin before weed pressure sets in.&nbsp;

Harvest is a family affair near Garden Plain in Sedgwick County, where Martin Kerschen is harvesting alongside his son Justin — the sixth generation on the farm. Since starting harvest on Wednesday, June 5, they are seeing yields from 50 to 70 bushels per acre on fields planted to SY Monument. Proteins range from 12 to 13 percent. Rains from the weekend took a slight toll on test weights, but Martin Kerschen is extremely pleased with how this year’s crop is turning out — especially compared to last year.&nbsp;

“I enjoy years like this,” he said. “You try the best you can, and we’re happy with yields and how our wheat looks this year. There’s a big smile on my face.”

While still variable across some fields, the wheat crop is also looking much better in Dickinson County, where fourth-generation producer Bryant Olson farms near Gypsum with his father Gary, brother Trenton and uncle David. The family started cutting on Friday, June 7, in hopes of getting as much cut as possible ahead of last weekend’s storms.

While still good quality, test weights did fall after the rain — from 62 pounds per bushel to 60 pounds per bushel. Protein is ranging from 12 percent to above 13 percent. High quality is essential as 10 percent of the Olsons' wheat acres are grown for their certified seed operation.&nbsp;

The operation planted several varieties, including LCS Atomic AX, LSC Helix AX, KS Mako, KS Providence, KS Larry and Bob Dole. Two more weeks and harvest should be wrapped up for this family.&nbsp;

“Wheat harvest will be early enough that we won’t have to worry about weed pressure,” Olson said. “Hopefully it doesn’t rain too much before we get it all up, and we will be sitting a lot better than last year.”

Sumner County missed the recent rains and Tim Turek, who farms near South Haven, is praying rain stays out of the forecast so farmers do not have to worry dealing with pigweeds or crabgrass until harvest is over. Then, he welcomes the moisture to benefit his cattle and fall crops.&nbsp;

Turek started cutting at least a week earlier compared to a normal year and avoiding the rain delays meant he kept cutting over the weekend. He’s seeing field yields anywhere from 40 bushels per acre to above 70 bushels per acre. Test weights are hitting 62 pounds per bushel thus far, with proteins averaging between 10 and 12 percent. He has been especially pleased with the varieties AP Prolific, AP18 AX, AP24 AX and Bob Dole.&nbsp;

“There is no comparison to last year,” Turek said, “Honestly, I can’t believe the recovery we’ve had with the whirlwind weather this year. You have to attribute it to the progress of the genetics over the past several years because when I was a kid, wheat wouldn’t have survived what this wheat has been through.”

Turek hauls quite a bit of his wheat to the Scoular Grain elevator in Wellington, where grain merchandiser Doug Zeller is seeing both excellent yield and proteins across the board.&nbsp;

Zeller reported they started taking in wheat about two weeks ago and plans on receiving grain for at least 10 more days. Test weights are averaging 62 to 63 pounds per bushel and proteins are staying steady at 11 to 12.5 percent.&nbsp;

“This year is much better than expected on both spectrums,” he said. “With higher yields, we typically see lower protein and test weights. This year that isn’t the case.”&nbsp;

With heat indices estimated to reach 100 degrees by Thursday, harvest is likely to continue progressing quickly across the lower two-thirds of the state.

Day 2, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

Salina Fire Department (SFD) staff responded to reports of an explosion in town shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11.&nbsp;

Five SFD engines and multiple emergency staff arrived at 400 block of South 10th Street to investigate a possible small explosion.

The house appeared to have smoke billowing from the front, but there were no visible signs of fire.

🎥Possible explosion at central Salina home, large SFD and emergency response

The night is almost here - <a href="https://fb.watch/sEvAbRDayS/">the 38th year of the SM Hanson Festival Jam</a>. This is the opening night event of the Smoky Hill River Festival and the highest-attended event of the Festival. According to event organizers, attendance for this single-night event in 2023 was over 13,000.

SM Hanson Festival Jam is fast-paced evening of music is fun for all. Four hours of music. 17 bands play for 12 minutes. This year, 27 bands applied from Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Kansas. Our selection process and goals are to offer a variety of musicfrom the region.

Festival Jam 2024 will have four new bands, three second timers, and a mix of other past performers. Never a dull moment. 

The music changes every 15 minutes on the quarter hour. Quick set changes are possible through the backline equipment and stage staff provided by SM Hanson Music. The musicians get tuned back stage and then the frantic 3 minutes of switching bands begins. Thirty seven years of practice makes this switch-out appear easy. 

Come be part of the SM Hanson Festival Jam - the largest single evening music event in the Midwest. Gates open at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday June 13 – music begins at 5:45 p.m. with a special-by-invitation band.

On Monday, Carlos Rodón pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning in his return to the mound where he hit his low point last September, winning his seventh straight start and leading Yankees over the Royals 4-2

Juan Soto rejoined the Yankees lineup after missing a three-game series against the Dodgers because of left forearm inflammation. He went 1 for 3 with a run and a walk as the designated hitter.

Unfortunately this loss came at an additional cost to the Royals, as outfielder Hunter Renfroe fractured his left big toe when fouled off two pitches from Rodón in the third inning

Renfroe was removed from the game in the fifth inning of play, to this point in the season the nine-year major league veteran is batting .200 with six homers and 26 RBI.

🎙King in the Community — Friends of the River Foundation Puppets

Powerful supercell thunderstorms erupted along a cold front across Central Kansas during the early evening hours of Wednesday, June 11 2008. 

These storms quickly became severe as they tracked east producing several tornadoes along with extremely large hail. Tornadoes with damage were first reported across the Northeast portion of Barton County, around 8 miles north-northwest of Claflin around 6:40 p.m.

 Initial reports are that there was roof damage along with damage to rural homes and outbuildings. This same storm tracked through Ellsworth County causing damage to trees and power poles. A few hours later another intense thunderstorm developed and tracked through Saline County around 9:40 p.m. producing a tornado. This tornado moved east-northeast with a path length of about 14 miles and a maximum intensity of EF-3.

The tornado first touched down just west of I-135 and just south of the Salina Airport. 

It then traveled  along the southeast outskirts of Salina where it damaged several homes, outbuildings, trees and power lines. EF-3 damage was noted near the intersection of East Shilling Road and South Holmes Road.

The tornado continued east of Salina with some EF-2 damage near East Crawford Street and South Whitmore Road. The tornado continued northeast before crossing into Dickinson County, just south of Solomon. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries.

Along with tornadoes, these powerful storms also produced extremely large  hail, some to the size of softballs.

On Monday at approximately 1:30 p.m., the Salina Police Department (SPD) dispatched officers to the 1100 block of State Street following a reported burglary.

According to SPD Cpt. James Feldman, a 41-year-old woman from Salina informed officers that she was moving out of her residence on June 9. When she returned on June 10, she discovered numerous items missing.

"She noticed she was missing a Black and Decker toaster, sewing supplies, storage containers, tools, printer, scanner, some food items, a shelving unit, a pot, a couple of cameras, a violin and an AC unit," Feldman said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The total value of the stolen items is estimated at $560. The Salina Police Department is currently investigating the incident.

This is day 1 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is now 5 percent complete, ahead of 1 percent complete last year and on average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 9, 2024. Winter wheat conditions were rated at 33 percent very poor to poor, 35 percent fair and 32 percent good to excellent.

Growers on the Kansas/Oklahoma border started cutting in earnest around Monday, June 3, according to Chris Fryer, grain merchandiser with CoMark Equity Alliance, LLC. The southern tier of counties in his coverage area — Barber, Harper, Sumner and Cowley — are now about 20 to 30 percent complete with harvest.&nbsp;

Proteins are variable from field-to-field, ranging anywhere from 9.5 percent up to 14.5 percent. Moisture is dry and test weights are well above 60 pounds per bushel with several loads above 62 pounds per bushel. Overall, Fryer estimates the harvest will come in a tick higher than the five-year average.&nbsp;

“Yields are better than expected, so everyone is in a pretty good mood,” Fryer said.&nbsp;

Elsewhere in the coverage area, harvest in Sedgwick and Harvey counties is about 15 percent complete, with combines shut down by rains over the weekend. Harvest in Marion County in central Kansas is just getting started at about 5 percent complete and soft red winter wheat harvest is just beginning in Crawford County near McCune.&nbsp;

Overall, acres were stable this year and prices and yields are higher. Fryer noted most of the early wheat is going straight into the elevator bin to fill up space left empty from previous disappointing harvests. He also reported wheat is being sold to fill inelastic mill demand and they’re seeing some exports start to pick back up after last year’s dramatic drop-off related to the strong U.S. dollar and short supplies.&nbsp;

Harvest is now 20 to 25 percent complete near Clearwater, according to farmer Scott Van Allen, who reported in from the parts store where he was picking up what he needed to fix a fan belt for the combine.&nbsp;

He started cutting on Thursday, June 6, but in addition to the current equipment breakdown, he was delayed over the weekend by storms that brought straight-line winds and took him out of the field to clean up debris at his son’s place by Wellington Lake. Despite trees and irrigated corn blown down, the wheat was still standing nicely and they were back in the field on Monday, June 10.&nbsp;

Harvest has been a mix. Full-season wheat benefitted from nice filling weather and there is a lot of grain in the heads, resulting in heavy test weights of 63 to 65 pounds per bushel. Fields that were double-cropped behind soybeans were knocked back by dry weather and are more disappointing. Overall, the final yield for the farm should come in much better than last year.&nbsp;

Combines are also rolling again across Sumner County after a small rain delay, according to Chris Stevens, manager of Farmers Coop Grain Association, based in Conway Springs. Farmers in the area have been hopping and skipping around to catch ripe wheat fields and avoid green suckerheads since Wednesday, June 5. Most producers should have some good wheat, but there were fields that suffered from either a prolonged lack of moisture or drowned out in recent storms.&nbsp;

Quantity and quality exceed that of the last several years and are maybe even better than anticipated, so Stevens said no one is complaining. Test weights are good and heavy, averaging 61 to 62 pounds per bushel, and moisture has stayed dry around 12 percent.&nbsp;

It’s too early for good yield information, but Stevens said to expect a wide range from 30 to 50 bushels per acre. That is still 15 to 18 bushels per acre higher than last year’s average of 22 bushels per acre, and this year’s crop should hit within the area’s five-year average.&nbsp;
