A chamber music concert featuring the Triptych Trio of Evgeny Zvonnikov on violin, Sarah Rushing on piano, and James Barger on saxophone will take place at the Sandzén Gallery on Sunday, September 8, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. The group will be performing a variety of selections.

Evgeny Zvonnikov&nbsp;joined the music faculty of West Texas A&amp;M University and Harrington String Quartet in Canyon, Texas, in 2017. He holds degrees from Saint-Petersburg Conservatory in Russia and Wichita State University. His career as a violinist has taken him to Singapore, Europe, Russia, and across the United States. He has also taught a wide variety of master classes around the world including Malaysia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Mexico, as well as the United States. Additionally, he is a founding member of Orfeo Piano Trio together with cellist Leonid Shukaev and pianist Julie Bees.

Dr. Sarah Rushing, NCTM is Assistant Professor of Piano at West Texas A&amp;M University, where she teaches applied piano, class piano, and piano pedagogy. Rushing’s commitment to teaching is evidenced through her years of experience teaching private and group piano classes in the community and the university settings in Louisiana, New York, Colorado, Virginia, and Texas.

Before moving to Texas in 2020, Rushing was Instructor of Piano at Virginia Tech. She holds degrees from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Ithaca College, and Louisiana State University. When Rushing is not teaching or performing, she enjoys the great outdoors, hiking, and running, which has taken her to numerous summits in the US and abroad.

James Barger is an active performer of solo and chamber music throughout the US and is in&nbsp;demand as a classical and jazz saxophonist and educator. He holds degrees from Texas Tech University and West Texas A&amp;M University. In 2016 he joined the faculty of Texas A&amp;M University where he serves as the Associate Professor of Saxophone, teaching courses in applied saxophone and jazz improvisation and directing jazz ensembles.

Barger is passionate about chamber music and is a founding member and the soprano saxophone chair in the acclaimed Mirasol Quartet. This group has performed throughout the country and has participated in several national competitions.

The Sandzén Gallery is located at 401 North First Street in Lindsborg. There is no charge for the concert, however, donations are appreciated.&nbsp;

Jayhawks earning a spot on the list are quarterback Jalon Daniels, running back Devin Neal, wide receivers Lawrence Arnold, Luke Grimm and Quentin Skinner, offensive lineman Bryce Foster, defensive lineman Jereme Robinson, linebacker JB Brown and cornerbacks Cobee Bryant and Mello Dotson.

The watch list is composed of position players who were evaluated by the Senior Bowl staff and identified by the scouting team as the top draft prospects at every level of college football. Every player on the list is eligible to participate in an all-star game as either a 2020 high school graduate or a true four-year player.

Meanwhile in Kansas City Tyler Anderson outlasted Cole Ragans in a matchup of All-Star pitchers, and Zach Neto hit a go-ahead homer for LA, as the Angels beat the Royals 9-5 on Tuesday night to end the Royals' five-game winning streak.

The Royals are still tied with the Twins for second in the AL Central and for the second AL Wild Card spot, and sit just 3.5 behind the Guardians for first place in the Central with a month remaining in the regular season.

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Kansas and ordered federal assistance to supplement state, tribal, and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by a severe storm, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding on May 19, 2024, according to a statement from the White House.

Federal funding is available to state, tribal, and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storm, straight-line winds, tornadoes, and flooding in the counties of Barton, Ellsworth, Harvey, Hodgeman, Lincoln, Morris, Ottawa, Pawnee, Reno, Rush, Russell, Stafford, Wabaunsee, and Wyandotte.

Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Mr. Andrew P. Meyer of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been appointed to coordinate Federal recovery operations in the affected areas.&nbsp;

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the state and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.

K-State Salina <a href="http://salina.ksu.edu/">Kansas State University Salina</a>&nbsp;has selected Christal Cadenhead as its new executive director of enrollment management.&nbsp; Cadenhead will&nbsp;work to&nbsp;improve access to learners at all levels as a part of&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.k-state.edu/next-gen/">Next-Gen K-State strategic plan</a>.As the executive director of enrollment management, Cadenhead will oversee K-State Salina's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/academics/academic-support/advising/">academic advising</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/admissions/">admissions</a>&nbsp;teams.&nbsp;These two units are pivotal&nbsp;to&nbsp;K-State Salina's success in centering educational offerings around the student experience.&nbsp;The admissions department supports prospective and future K-State Salina students by helping them apply for college, find scholarships and navigate the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.salina.k-state.edu/admissions/tuition-scholarships-financial-aid/financial-aid/">financial aid department</a>. Cereal rye grain possesses many uses within crop and livestock production. Growers make rye part of their corn-soybean crop rotation to boost yields, while ranchers needing an alternative feed might hay it for their livestock.

Recently, a listener who plants rye as a cover crop asked the hosts of&nbsp;<a href="https://ksubci.org/2024/08/16/listener-question-ffar-icasa-grant-listener-question/" target="_blank">K-State’s Cattle Chat podcast</a>&nbsp;if rye grain can be included in cattle rations. Kansas State University beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster said “yes,” noting it depends on the class of cattle.

“Cattle can have rye grain in their diets,” he said. “It is nutritionally similar to other cereal grains like oats and barley, with a higher fiber content than wheat.”

Producers often plant rye for its cold tolerance and relatively low soil and moisture requirements. Lancaster said an after-harvest benefit includes rye grain’s ability to replace corn (one of the more expensive feedstuffs) in certain cattle diets.

“There is a study that looked at growing cattle on rye instead of corn as a grain source and those researchers saw no difference in cattle performance,” he said.

“Whether it is growing replacement heifers or backgrounding feeder cattle, I think a producer could pretty much substitute all of the corn in a diet with whole rye grain.”

On the other hand, producers may not want to feed rye grain to cattle in the finishing phase of the feeding period.

“Another part of that research evaluated finishing cattle on rye grain rather than corn,” Lancaster said. “Overall, the cattle that had rye grain in their diet had a lower dry matter intake, their average daily gain was lower and feed conversion was worse.”

Producers who elect to feed rye grain do not need to have it processed before feeding, according to Lancaster.

“The same study assessed hammer milling rye versus feeding it whole. Processing did not seem to improve cattle performance, so I do not think producers need to spend the money to have it milled,” he said.

Additionally, producers should scout the rye seed heads in a field prior to feeding, K-State veterinarian Bob Larson said, to avoid health problems caused by ergot fungus.

“Rye is at a bigger risk for ergot fungus than other cereal grains,” he said. “It can be quite damaging to animals that consume it. The arteries in their body constrict, and the blood flow to their tails and feet can be restricted to a degree where they are damaged and may even fall off.”

“Go out and walk through that field you are planning on feeding rye from and look at the seed heads. The fungus is a little bigger than a rye seed and will be a dark black or brown.”

Larson said even if only a portion of a field has ergot fungus, a producer should not feed any grain from that crop to livestock.

K-State veterinarian Brad White wrapped up the conversation, saying: “I think with that caution (regarding ergot toxicity) in mind – and depending on the kind of cattle you are feeding – rye can certainly be a component of a ration.”

KSRE Cattle Chat: To feed or not to feed rye grain

For over a century, Johnson County residents voted for Republican presidential candidates.

Even during periods of Democrat strength, including Franklin Roosevelt’s landslide victory in 1932 and Lyndon Johnson’s overwhelming triumph in 1964, the county stayed true to its Republican identity.

Woodward Wilson was the last Democrat to win Johnson County, achieving this feat way back in 1916.

But in 2020 Joe Biden put an end to the extraordinary run.

Two years later, nearly 60 percent of Johnson County voters supported Governor Kelly’s reelection bid and the county’s state House and Senate Democrat delegations increased considerably. Democrats in fact now consider Johnson County a crucial battle ground in the 2024 elections.

So, we have arrived at an important crossroad.

Are Democrat gains in Johnson County a harbinger of things to come? Or are they a temporary break in an otherwise robust trend of Republican dominance?

The answer can be attributed to changes in demographics. Johnson County’s population is increasingly urban, college-educated, and wealthy – trends that favor the Democratic Party.

Moreover, Democrat-leaning industries – education, health care and scientific professionals – now account for roughly 40 percent of the county’s employment base. Accordingly, the proportion of Johnson County voters registered as Democrats has increased from 20 percent in 2000 to 32 percent today.

But these changes cannot fully account for the shifts in voting behavior. After all, the percentage of voters in Johnson County registered as Republican has remained above 40 percent.

What has changed is the Republican party. It has failed to offer candidates that appeal to moderates and those unaffiliated with either party.

In the 2018 gubernatorial race, for example, Laura Kelly prevailed over Kris Kobach by 5 points statewide.

In Johnson County, Kelly thumped Kobach by a whopping 17 points.

Also, in 2018 Democrat Sharice Davids unseated incumbent Republican Kevin Yoder in the race for Kansas’ third congressional district – which includes Johnson County.

Davids skillfully managed a centrist image and has been able to hold the seat comfortably even after the district’s boundaries were redrawn to eliminate Democrat advantages.

In 2016, Trump resonated with centrist voters. He secured majority support from independents and suburban voters across the nation and extended the Republican streak in Johnson County.

Four year later, Biden seized the ideological center winning 64 percent of moderates and 54 percent of Independents.

He convincingly won Johnson County, garnering an unprecedented 53 percent of the vote.

The meaning is clear: Centrism thrives in Johnson County.

The county’s demographics do suggest a supportive environment for Democrats. This alone implies Kamala Harris is poised to win Johnson County.

However, a better explanation is that county residents like centrist candidates.

Neither Harris not Trump, at this point, are centrists.

And their vice president picks merely energized core supporters, prioritizing base maximization strategies over appeals to on-the-fence moderates.

Despite centrism’s successful track record of winning elections, reaching out to moderate voters if often met with disapproval. Passionate partisans steer candidates away from the middle ground in favor of more extreme policy agendas.

Should Harris resist progressive pressures and concentrate on moderate voters, she will be in a strong position to take Johnson County and may very well be the next president.

City of Salina gives update on recovery efforts following windstorm

Kansas Wesleyan University Sometimes there are targets that seem out of reach. There are goals that seem unattainable. For years, Kansas Wesleyan’s long-term goal of 1,000 students was in that realm — but no more. The vision became reality Tuesday when the university announced that, for the first time in its 138-year history, enrollment exceeds 1,000 students.&nbsp;

“This is a milestone in the history of Kansas Wesleyan,” said Dr. Matt Thompson, KWU president. “At the founding of KWU, there were just a few thousand residents in all of Salina itself. The total head count of 1,031 continues KWU’s stunning growth, as the university’s student population was sitting at just 716 in the fall of 2019. That marks a 44% increase which is, undoubtedly, one of the largest in the country during that time. Total enrollment is up 8.3% from last year’s 952 figure. This success comes during a period in which numerous private colleges are experiencing challenges, and even closures, but KWU has found success through clear, strategic decisions.&nbsp;

“This has been a four-year enrollment effort on the part of numerous individuals across this campus,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “An important part of that has been teaming with those in the Salina community, from donors to businesses to local school districts, to provide an even better experience for each of our students. The community, in turn, has embraced us and opened doors for the future of every Coyote through countless internship and work experience opportunities, as well as the university’s host family program. That relationship with Salina, paired with wise investment decisions across campus, has set us on this new trajectory.”&nbsp;

Of the 1,031 students, 912 of them are full-time undergraduates, the largest such number in school history. There are 56 MBA students, as well. All told, there are 417 new students, marking the second straight year that new student enrollment has exceeded 400, also a first in school history.&nbsp;

The announcement continues KWU’s historic momentum that included more than $10 million worth of construction projects in the past 18 months, including the Bieber Dining Hall, the Applequist Family Music Center, the renovation of Sams Chapel and the opening of Coyote Village, KWU’s newest student housing. KWU has also made notable renovations to the Albert Nelson Student Success Center, Everett Morgan Strength Training Center (weight room) and existing student residence halls.&nbsp;

KWU Athletics has won 16 KCAC team championships and four conference Commissioners Cups since 2019, but more than that, the campus’ academic momentum has accelerated. The success of the DECA program, the growth of the Music Department, the hiring of 12 new faculty members and the increase in the university’s minimum GPA for acceptance have all contributed to increased academic success across the university.&nbsp;

“There are so many positives in a KWU classroom,” said Dr. Damon Kraft, KWU provost. “From the experiences of our talented faculty, to academic activities, to engaging programs, there are countless opportunities to grow intellectually as a Coyote. We are excited that so many students see that and have chosen the KWU experience!”

“KWU is a special place,” said Thompson. “I hope everyone will come experience our community and see what’s happening on campus, by coming to a concert, athletic event or other activity. KWU adds the comma, clears 1,000-student enrollment for first time

This past weekend, Aug. 16-18,&nbsp; the Saline County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad's Dive Team conducted an extensive training operation at Wilson Lake. According to training organizers, the successful training showcases their readiness and proficiency in search and recovery operations. 

The team, equipped with their command trailer and swift water boat, spent Friday evening through Sunday afternoon honing their skills in a variety of critical areas, including search and recovery techniques, boating, boat-based deployments, and navigation.

A significant aspect of the training was the focus on comradery and team cohesion, which are vital to the success of any mission. This event also served as a proof of concept, demonstrating that the team can sustain extended operations, remaining on scene and on mission for multiple days when necessary.

The Saline County Sheriff's Mounted Patrol and Rescue Squad's Dive Team extends its sincere thanks to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan for his valuable contribution to the training. 

"By playing the role of a criminal and disposing of a "gun" (a handgun-shaped training aide) into the lake, Sheriff Soldan helped create a realistic scenario that challenged the team to recover evidence as they would in a real-life situation," a release from the organization reads.&nbsp;

The training aide was also randomly dropped from the boat to further test the team's search capabilities. This rigorous training underscores our commitment to remaining always mission ready and mission capable.

Last week, I completed my fourth annual 60-county Mann Listening Tour. Each year that I have served in Congress, I have hosted at least one town hall in every county of the Big First District. If an issue matters to Kansan, it matters to me, and those of you who show up to my town halls give me valuable insights to best serve you in Congress.

Over the past eight months I have consistently heard Kansans’ concerns about passing a fiscally conservative Farm Bill, reining in the weaponization of our federal government, cutting our reckless government spending, protecting the integrity of our nation’s elections, and securing America’s wide-open borders. These concerns have been a guide to how I develop solutions in Congress, and they will continue to be my pilot light in Washington, D.C.

As I concluded my annual listening tour last week, I could not help but to think about how our nation’s capital could benefit from more Kansas values.

Senator Bob Dole once told me about the “Kansas approach”—honesty, hard work, respect for your roots, common sense, service, simplicity, and genuine, thoughtful care for people. That is the Kansas spirit that so many of our fellow Kansans want to see more of in the nation’s capital. Sadly, that approach has dwindled and been forgotten by too many over the years.

Since the Biden-Harris Administration was sworn in, more than 12 million illegal immigrants have illegally entered the country. America begged Congress to come up with a solution, so House Republicans drafted H.R. 2, the strongest border security legislation passed in decades. Rather than coming to the table and finding commonsense solutions, Senate Majority Leader Schumer buried the bill in his legislative graveyard and refused to work with House Republicans to develop a solution.

When Americans rightly expressed their concerns about illegal immigrants voting in our national elections, House Republicans passed the SAVE Act, which requires individuals to provide proof of citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. 198 of my Democrat colleagues voted against this commonsense legislation, and President Biden and Vice President Harris came out against it.

The House Agriculture Committee heard the demands from farm country for a fiscally conservative Farm Bill that provides certainty as they work to feed, fuel, and clothe world. We passed the Food, Farm, and National Security Act of 2024 out of committee with bipartisan support, and again, our Senate Democrat colleagues have responded with silence and failed to develop their own Farm Bill.

When President Biden was sworn in, he inherited a strong economy from the Trump Administration. However, President Biden was hyper-focused on massive government spending and expansion. For the first two years, Washington Democrats shoved their partisan, reckless tax-and-spend packages through Congress, which ultimately led to skyrocketing inflation and a declining U.S. economy. They senselessly taxed hardworking Americans and spent those dollars in an irresponsible manner. They have ignored the financial burden this spending put on American families, all while implementing burdensome regulations that handcuff hardworking Americans and drive-up costs even further.

Rather than resolving these issues, the Biden-Harris Administration spent more time using the federal government as a weapon against its political opponents. From using federal agencies to register voters at official events to attacking former President Trump in our federal courts, President Biden and Vice President Harris have been more committed to abusing their power than serving the American people.

Meanwhile, Kansans are just asking for some sort of commonsense policy solutions that bring them a degree of relief from the hardships of the past four years.

Ad Astra per Aspera, “to the stars through difficulty”. This isn’t just our state motto – it’s our way of life. Since our state’s founding, Kansans have endured and embraced hardships as we reached for the stars. We work hard to solve difficult problems, we keep our word, and we take pride in being a loyal and dedicated people. Our government would be a lot more productive and efficient if our nation’s capital embraced these values.

When I laid out my Commitment to the Big First District at the beginning of the 118th&nbsp;Congress, I promised Kansans to fight for an economy that’s strong, a future that’s built on freedom, a nation that’s safe, and a government that is accountable. Throughout my town halls it was clear – Kansans want me to continue that fight and to get our nation back on track.

I do not serve in Congress to be a caretaker in the slow demise of America- I serve to fight and work to make it stronger. I will not give up on bringing our conservative Kansas values to our nation’s capital or believing our brightest days are yet to come.

Volunteer teams have resumed limb removal work following the recent severe wind event. However, due to limited resources, no additional names are being added to the service list.

As of today, 34 homes remain on the list. Volunteer teams are back in the area this week and will continue working on the remaining homes through the weekend. Residents are asked to be patient as these volunteers diligently provide assistance.

If your home is already on the list but no longer requires assistance, please contact Saline County Emergency Management to have your name removed. Saline County volunteer tree limb removal update

A 17-year-old male from Kansas City was arrested yesterday August 19, after a series of attempted vehicle thefts and one successful vehicle theft in Salina. 

Salina Police Department (SPD) Lt. Kyle Tonniges said SPD officers responded to multiple stolen or damaged vehicles, with the targeted vehicles primarily being Kias and Hyundais.

At 3:02 p.m. yesterday, a member of the public reported an abandoned vehicle in the area of Indiana and Iron Avenues. When SPD officers arrived, they discovered a 2015 Kia Optima with a broken rear window and a damaged steering column.

 The vehicle was confirmed stolen from the CVS parking lot, and the owner, a 26-year-old Salina man, reported it missing shortly after officers arrived. 

"We went to CVS and we were able to get some surveillance video of a possible suspect," Tonniges said.

Later that evening, at 7:17 p.m., SPD officers were called to the 900 block of East Ash for an attempted vehicle theft. 

The vehicle owner, a 43-year-old female from Salina, said her 2013 Hyundai Elantra had its rear window broken and steering column punched. Officers found the vehicle in the  100 block of North Kansas Avenue—just around the corner from where it had been parked. 

Tonniges said at around 9:08 p.m., officers received a call from a 17-year-old male from Kansas City who claimed he was stranded in Salina after his friends left him during their drive from Denver, Colorado to Kansas City. 

"As the officers were speaking to this subject they saw that he resembled the suspect that was on the CVS surveillance videos," Tonniges said. "They started gathering more information and ended up finding a flathead screwdriver in his possession, and then found some clothing in a book bag that matched the clothing from the video."

As police continued to investigate, additional reports of attempted vehicle thefts and damage surfaced:

Officers found a 2015 Hyundai Elantra with a broken rear window at 219 North Santa Fe Avenue.

A 2012 Kia Forte with a broken rear window and damaged steering column was reported in the 200 block of North Columbia Avenue.

A 2012 Hyundai Sonata at Homewood Suites, 115 East Mulberry Street, also had its rear window broken and steering column punched.

 Three more vehicles—a 2019 Kia Soul, a 2013 Kia Soul, and a 2014 Hyundai Sonata—were discovered in the parking garage of Salina Regional Health Center at 423 South Santa Fe, all with similar damage.

The 17-year-old unnamed suspect was arrested and is facing multiple charges, including one count of felony theft, seven counts of attempted theft, and eight counts of damage to property.

Officers found the vehicle in the 100 block of North Kansas Avenue—just around the corner from where it had been parked. Tonniges said at around 9:08 p.m., officers received a call from a 17-year-old male from Kansas City who claimed he was stranded in Salina after his friends left him during their drive from Denver, Colorado to Kansas City. "As the officers were speaking to this subject they saw that he resembled the suspect that was on the CVS surveillance videos," Tonniges said. Kansas’ population is expected to grow by nearly 500,000 people in the next 50 years, and non-white residents are predicted to drive that growth, a research center forecasts.

A report from Wichita State University’s Center for Economic Development and Business Research said the state is predicted to add more than 469,000 residents by 2072, which will amount to a 16% increase from the state’s 2022 population.

It’s a sign that Kansas’ population is breaking out of a period of stagnancy, said Jonathan Norris, a research economist at the center, which is a part of the university’s W. Frank Barton School of Business.

The state’s metropolitan areas — Kansas City, Lawrence, Topeka and Wichita — make up the lionshare of the projected growth, Norris said. But that’s because the state’s rural areas are finding their balance.

Lumped together, rural counties are projected to decline, and metropolitan areas are projected to grow, but historical forecasts indicate rural areas are now experiencing less decline than years past, Norris said.

“The landscape is going to change,” Norris said. “One of the big changes we’re seeing is the increased diversification in those rural areas, too.”

The&nbsp;<a href="https://cedbr.org/forecast-blog/population-forecast" target="_blank">forecast</a>, which was funded by the Kansas City, Missouri-based nonprofit the Patterson Family Foundation, analyzes mortality, fertility and migration rates along with age and race data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Surveys to reach its population predictions.

Nearly every county in Kansas will see an increase in non-white residents in the next 50 years, the forecast said. Growth rates regardless of race or ethnicity are expected to increase across the state, but Black, Hispanic, Native American, Asian and Pacific-Islander Kansans, among others, will see higher rates of growth than their white counterparts, the forecast indicates.

Per the center’s predictions, it would exceed 3 million in 2032 and reach 3.4 million in 2072.Births in Kansas have steadily decreased in the past 20 years with few exceptions, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kdhe.ks.gov/DocumentCenter/View/29633/Preliminary-Birth-Report-2022-PDF" target="_blank">2023 preliminary birth report</a>.&nbsp; However, the center’s forecast predicts the number of children younger than 5 years old will increase by nearly 24% in the next 50 years. The center believes the “growing birth counts will be a powerful driver of population growth beyond 2072,” a Monday news release said.Kansans older than 65 are projected to experience the most growth in the next 50 years among all age groups with a nearly 23% increase.
