A 74-year-old Salina man was arrested Friday afternoon after he allegedly threatened a relative with a metal baseball bat.

Salina Police Department (SPD) Capt. James Feldman said officers responded to 2900 block of Berkeley Street at around 2 p.m. on Jan. 24 following a 911 call from a 78-year-old woman. The female victim told officers she had returned home and encountered Roger Copeland, a relative staying at the residence who appeared upset for unknown reasons.

According to Feldman, Copeland threatened the woman with a metal baseball bat. She called for help, and officers arrested Copeland without incident.

On Wednesday through Friday, January 29 through January 31, Ponton and Virtus will begin to repair the City of Salina’s brick medians along the S. 9th Street corridor. This project also includes related curb &amp; gutter repairs.

The work will be completed with minimal lane closures on each side of the median where it is occurring. Motorists should expect minor delays, although through traffic is encouraged to utilize alternate routes during construction. Weather permitting, each installment of the work is expected to last a week. Motorists are urged to proceed with caution for the safety of the crews performing the work.

This type of maintenance has been used to help extend the life of many roads throughout the City of Salina and is an accepted practice of repair around the State of Kansas. 

It consists of removing settled, heaved, or damaged bricks and reestablishing the base to reposition them. Brick pattern and spacing shall generally match pattern and spacing of adjacent bricks and pavement. Salvaged bricks shall be used for as many repairs as possible. Also, limited curb and gutter removal and replacement will occur concurrently in each location as needed along the S. 9th Street medians.

The scheduled work described above is the first installment of the City of Salina’s 2024 Brick Street Repair maintenance project. The full project cost of all installments totals $52,000.

The Cardinal 4-H Club had a great transition into the new 4-H year. We ended last year with a Celebration of Achievements event, where many of our members received 4-H pin awards. 

A pin is an award given to 4-H members who meet certain 4-H standards. You can also receive pin awards for specific project areas. 

A family in our club, the Michelle Schrock Family, also received the 4-H Family of the Year Award. This award is given to one family in our district each year that makes a significant contribution to 4-H. Congratulations to the Schrock Family, and thank you for all you do.

In our club meetings, we started the new year with officer elections and installation, where club members were elected into their leadership roles for the year. Many new members are taking on new leadership roles this year. In December, we had an awesome Christmas Party, where members enjoyed a potluck and gift exchange. We are happy to say we have many new members, and our club is constantly growing.

This month, our club also had two Gavel Games teams compete: one senior team and one junior team. Both teams received blue ribbons! Gavel Games is a contest in which members learn how to run a meeting using parliamentary procedure. Keep up the good work, Cardinal 4-H.

You may be aware that Monarch butterflies are endangered. This is due to the loss of habitat and the use of pesticides. Gardeners can counteract both of these problems. The orange milkweed is the only host plant for monarch caterpillars in the Plains states. 

Seeds can be ordered online and refrigerated for about 30 days on damp paper towels in plastic bags. Then, they can be started in soil, which may take 30 days for sprouting. So, the plant might be ready to set out by the last frost date in spring. You will probably need a dozen plants. 

Conservation efforts saved the bluebirds, and the antelope and are helping the lesser prairie chicken. We are all that's available to save the monarchs.

Theatre Salina debuts screwball comedy ‘Lend Me a Soprano' Friday

Salina Police Department officers arrested a 23-year-old Salina man following a domestic disturbance where he allegedly threatened a woman and a juvenile with a firearm late Saturday night.

According to SPD Capt. James Feldman, officers were dispatched to the 3000 block of Ringneck Crossing, near Schilling Road, at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, in response to a reported domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, officers spoke with Sammi Nichols, 23, of Salina, and a 25-year-old woman who resides at the residence. Both initially denied any disturbance

"During that investigation, they determined that there was a male under the age of 18 in the residence who heard a disturbance, and when he went to the room that the two occupied, the juvenile observed Mr. Nichols standing over the female with a handgun," Feldman said.&nbsp;

When Nichols noticed the juvenile standing nearby, he reportedly turned and threatened to harm both the juvenile and the woman if the police were contacted. Captain James Feldman did not disclose the exact nature of the relationship between the juvenile and the female victim, only stating that the two were acquainted.

The juvenile called a relative, who then notified SPD. Officers searched a vehicle parked outside the residence and located a 9mm handgun, believed to be involved in the incident.&nbsp;

Nichols was taken into custody and faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault, domestic battery, intimidation of a witness, and criminal possession of a weapon. Authorities noted that Nichols is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

The investigation revealed no injuries, and no additional details about the relationships between those involved were provided.&nbsp;

Pavement will be removed, and a water main will be disconnected from service. Albert Avenue and Buckeye Avenue will be closed for traffic between South Ohio Street and Lewis Street. Access to adjacent properties will be maintained. 

Work is expected to last two weeks and be completed by February 12, 2025, weather permitting.

Appropriate barriers will be in place to ensure the safety of workers. Motorists may encounter minor delays and are encouraged to avoid work zones when possible

The Local Food Works Foundation has opened applications for the 2025 Local Food Grant, offering up to $5,000 to support businesses dedicated to fostering a sustainable food system and serving the Saline County community. Applications are now being accepted and must be submitted by February 10, 2025.

Researchers at Kansas State University say the number of cases of an allergic reaction to red meat tied to tick bites is increasing across the state.

Priscilla Brenes, K-State Research and Extension nutrition and wellness specialist, said cases of an allergy called alpha-gal syndrome are becoming more common through more rural areas of Kansas. Alpha-gal syndrome is the term used to describe the allergic reaction to red meats and mammalian related products, most often through a tick bite.

The main parasite responsible for the spread of alpha-gal syndrome is the Lone Star tick, a common variety in brushy and more heavily wooded parts of Kansas. Brenes said in a statement that she surveyed other Kansas extension agents and found there was a lack of available information about alpha-gal syndrome, and that the agents wanted more details to share within their communities.

K-State entomologist Yoonseong Park said studies indicate that less than 10% of people bitten by the Lone Star tick ever develop an allergic reaction to red meat. Symptoms of alpha-gal syndrome include hives, nausea or vomiting, severe stomach pain, dizziness, drops in blood pressure, shortness of breath and swollen lips and throat.

Park said tick activity picks up during spring months in Kansas, and every patient who develops the red meat allergy has a different level of sensitivity to it, like other allergies. In any case of possible alpha-gal syndrome, patients are encouraged to talk with their doctor immediately.

Michael Chao, K-State meat scientist, said a recent report from the Yale School of Medicine shows that the levels of antibodies which cause the reaction decline over time, giving some people the chance to consume red meat and related products again.

Chao uses mice in his research to test the reaction of various meat products, such as hot dogs and jerky. He said his hope is to use the data he gathers to help people reintroduce red meat into their diet “when they’re ready for it.”

Brenes and her colleagues are offering a survey to residents across all 105 Kansas counties as part of their effort to collect more information about alpha-gal syndrome. Brenes said those who participate in the survey may receive a financial incentive.

Coperion K-Tron, a bulk handling manufacturing company located at 606 N. Front Street in Salina, has announced plans to close its facility by the end of the year, resulting in the loss of 98 jobs.

The company notified Salina Mayor Greg Lenkiewicz, the Kansas Department of Commerce, and KansasWorks on Jan. 22 through a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice. This federal law mandates that employers provide 60 days advance notice to employees in the event of plant closures or mass layoffs.

According to Salina City Manager Mike Schrage, the Salina Community Economic Development Organization in partnership with Kansas Works and Kansas Department of Commerce’s rapid response team are working to assist those affected by the layoffs. The team will help connect displaced workers with new employment opportunities and other Salina resources.

Salina Post attempted to contact Coperion K-Tron on Friday, Jan. 24, but was unable to reach a company representative. As of Monday, Jan. 27, no further comment has been provided by the company.

Additional details about the closure and support efforts have not been announced.

Coperion K-Tron to close Salina facility, laying off nearly 100 workers

GARDEN CITY — Kansas mental health experts want rural residents to be aware of available resources as they work to enhance mental health services across more of the state.

NAMI Kansas executive director Sherrie Vaughn said she and her staff are preparing for a rural mental health summit on April 9 in Kiowa, a community of about 900 people in south-central Kansas, to bring the conversation about mental health care to more rural and frontier areas.

The summit is a continuation of the nonprofit agency’s Standing in the Gap series that began&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/08/28/kansas-mental-health-experts-discuss-gaps-in-services-for-farmers-and-ranchers-at-inaugural-summit/">in 2023 in Dodge City</a>. NAMI Kansas southwest steering committee chairwoman Itzel Moya said the initial event and four subsequent sessions have been “a great way for rural and frontier communities to bring light to mental health topics and resources.”

At that initial event, mental health experts and agricultural producers shared stories about their own mental health struggles and vocalized a need for more widespread mental health care services, particularly in the western half of the state.

The April 9 event is set to take place at the Kiowa Community Building from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.&nbsp;<a href="https://namikansas.org/get-involved/nami-kansas-events/sitg/" target="_blank">Registration is required</a>. The event will focus on how local faith leaders and church members can “stand in the gap” as links to mental health care for their communities, Vaughn said.

“Standing in the Gap presentations help to equip our local community leaders and members to start the conversation, learn about mental health conditions and statistical information, access its local resources, and seek solutions and opportunities to serve each other well,” Vaughn said.

Religious officials are often the first person to respond to a mental health crisis because of the lack of mental health care providers across the state, and because of preexisting trusting relationships formed within the community. At another Standing in the Gap event in November in Plainville, NAMI Kansas volunteer Tara Gwynn said Kansas has an average of one mental health care provider for every 450 residents.

In areas like Plainville, which is in Rooks County in north-central Kansas, Gwynn said the figure is closer to one provider per 4,000 people. But smaller communities often have multiple churches, all of which can have mental health information and support pamphlets available in view of their congregations.

Officials with the Kansas Department of Agriculture also are attempting to close the mental health care gap by partnering with Kansas Corn to offer the Kansas Ag Stress program. Created in 2019, the program website features&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansasagstress.org/ag-aware-providers-in-kansas" target="_blank">a list of mental health care providers</a>&nbsp;who offer telehealth services or specialize in mental health needs related to the ag industry.

Additionally, Kansas Farm Bureau has the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kfb.org/Article/Mental-Health-Resources" target="_blank">Rural Minds Matter</a>&nbsp;program that includes training materials, links to mental health support guides, and the Advocate of the Year awards that were created in 2024. The inaugural Advocate of the Year award winner was Fort Hays State University professor and therapist Will Stutterheim. The first Young Advocate of the Year award recipient was Destiny Johnson, a pre-K through 12th-grade social worker for Stafford Unified School District 349.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate agricultural producers have a higher suicide rate than other professions. The CDC report, published in 2020 with data sourced in 2016, found that men who worked in agriculture were at a greater risk, with a ratio of 43 deaths by suicide per 100,000 people. Statewide, the suicide rate for men is 19 per 100,000 people. According to data from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, more than 500 Kansans died by suicide in 2023.

Created in 2019, the program website features&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansasagstress.org/ag-aware-providers-in-kansas" target="_blank">a list of mental health care providers</a>&nbsp;who offer telehealth services or specialize in mental health needs related to the ag industry.Additionally, Kansas Farm Bureau has the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kfb.org/Article/Mental-Health-Resources" target="_blank">Rural Minds Matter</a>&nbsp;program that includes training materials, links to mental health support guides, and the Advocate of the Year awards that were created in 2024. The inaugural Advocate of the Year award winner was Fort Hays State University professor and therapist Will Stutterheim. The first Young Advocate of the Year award recipient was Destiny Johnson, a pre-K through 12th-grade social worker for Stafford Unified School District 349.Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate agricultural producers have a higher suicide rate than other professions. The CDC report, published in 2020 with data sourced in 2016, found that men who worked in agriculture were at a greater risk, with a ratio of 43 deaths by suicide per 100,000 people. Statewide, the suicide rate for men is 19 per 100,000 people. According to data from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, more than 500 Kansans died by suicide in 2023.

The Salina Public Library is proud to host “50 in 25,” an art exhibit presented by the Salina Central High School Visual Arts Department. This showcase features the talents of top junior and senior students, highlighting their creativity and artistic growth over the past year.

Under the guidance of instructor Larry Cullins, students have explored originality and variety through class assignments, independent projects, and their own artistic discoveries. Many participants are Advanced Placement Art students preparing to submit a portfolio of 15 pieces for potential college credit by May 1, 2025. 

Additionally, several promising juniors are exhibiting alongside their upperclassmen peers, demonstrating their own exceptional talent and vision.

The exhibit will be on display in the library's art gallery from Jan. 31 through March 14. The community is invited to a reception on Wednesday, Feb. 7, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., to meet the artists and view their artwork. Light refreshments will be served.

“We are looking forward to showcasing out-of-the-box work from these talented young artists,” said Cullins. “This exhibit offers a glimpse into their creativity and dedication, and we hope the community enjoys experiencing it as much as the students enjoyed creating it.”

The 11th Annual Rockin’ the Fe, a fundraiser for the Stiefel Theatre, is set for Friday, February 7, at 7 p.m. This year’s event features performances by The Sunset Sinners, Lazy Wayne Band, and Emmitt DeWater.

Tickets are $15 and $30 and can be purchased in person at the Stiefel Theatre Box Office or online at <a href="http://www.stiefeltheatre.org">www.stiefeltheatre.org</a>.

For 11 years, the Stiefel Theatre has partnered with Blake Blackim and the Sunset Sinners to bring Rockin’ the Fe to Salina—its annual fundraiser. Saline County Jail Bookings, Jan. 25

TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.6% in December. This is an increase from 3.5% in November and an increase from 2.6% in December 2023, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Labor.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 1,200 from November. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 500 over the month, while government increased by 700.

The unemployment rate in Saline County is up from 3.4 percent in November to 4.3 percent in December.&nbsp; The rate is also up in other counties in central Kansas. The rate in Dickinson County is up from 3.4 to 5.5 percent. Lincoln County reported a rate of 6.9 percent in December.

“Kansas ended the year with little change in the labor market,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “Total nonfarm jobs increased by 1,200 over the month while the unemployment rate edged up to 3.6%.”

Since December 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 18,400. This change is due to an increase of 13,300 private sector jobs and an increase of 5,100 government jobs.

Jobless rate up in central Kansas counties

By SALINA POST Dickinson County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

On Thursday, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit executed a search warrant in relation to a narcotics investigation, at a residence in the 2500 Block of Nicholson Road in Chapman, according to a media release.

While conducting the search warrant, deputies located THC edible products, Methamphetamine, Drug Paraphernalia, and firearms.

As a result of the investigation, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrested 34-year-old Emma Gomez and booked her into the Dickinson County Detention Facility on the following requested charges that include Possession with the Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a school, Possession with the Intent to Distribute Marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school, Unlawful Manufacturing of Controlled Substance, Aggravated Endangering a Child, Possession with Intent to Distribute Drug Paraphernalia within 1,000 feet of a school, Criminal Possession of weapons, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and No Drug Tax Stamp.

 </figure>By SALINA POST Dickinson County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.On Thursday, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit executed a search warrant in relation to a narcotics investigation, at a residence in the 2500 Block of Nicholson Road in Chapman, according to a media release.While conducting the search warrant, deputies located THC edible products, Methamphetamine, Drug Paraphernalia, and firearms.As a result of the investigation, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrested 34-year-old Emma Gomez and booked her into the Dickinson County Detention Facility on the following requested charges that include Possession with the Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a school, Possession with the Intent to Distribute Marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school, Unlawful Manufacturing of Controlled Substance, Aggravated Endangering a Child, Possession with Intent to Distribute Drug Paraphernalia within 1,000 feet of a school, Criminal Possession of weapons, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and No Drug Tax Stamp.

 </figure>Submitted The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) has announced the recipients of the 2025 Kansas Horizon Award, a program recognizing the outstanding teaching skills of new educators.&nbsp;The 32 educators chosen for this prestigious award will be honored at a special ceremony during the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) State Education Conference&nbsp;on Feb. 21, in Topeka.The Kansas Horizon Award program, sponsored by KSDE, allows all school districts in the state to nominate one elementary and one secondary teacher for the award.
