Teenager arrested after assaulting and trying to kidnap a woman from a home in South Salina.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Sunday, September 14 at around 3:00 am, a report was made about an 18-year old male suspect who attempted to break into a home in the 1400 block of Teakwood. Reportedly, a 17-year old woman who lives at the residence heard banging on the front door. When she walked to the door to see who it was, she recognized the suspect. SPD stated the suspect and the woman are acquaintances.

Moreover, the suspect wanted the woman to leave the house with him, but she refused. SPD stated the woman 'slightly cracked the door open' and the suspect pushed his way inside the house. He then grabbed a dog at the residence and put the dog in his truck, along with dragging the woman out of the house throwing her onto the front porch. Allegedly, the suspect hit the woman as well.

Afterwards, the suspect forcibly put the woman inside his truck, but she was able to get away and ran back inside the house. The victim's family members then awoke from their sleep and realized what had happened. When the&nbsp;victim's family members called 9-1-1, the suspect left the area.

Later that same morning, officers found and arrested the suspect in the 900 block of Maple. Arrested was, Moses Breadon and he is currently facing requested charges of:&nbsp;

Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Burglary, Criminal Threat, Domestic Battery and Robbery.

The victim suffered injuries with marks on her arms, along with a bloody nose. She was medically treated.

SPD stated the report is not completely done and could not confirm whether Breadon drove away with the dog.

Salina Area United Way receiving proceeds from local philanthropic event, along with hosting give back party

Becky Orlin from Salina, was arrested at the Dirksen Senate Building on September 10, and held overnight. A group of fourteen activists, from across the country, including nine Kansans, were arrested by the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department protesting the impending loss of assistance for housing across the country. 

The group disrupted lunch in the busy Dirksen Cafeteria, setting tents in the lunchroom and chanting “housing is a human right.” Thirteen of the group were arrested and released in hours, Becky was held overnight on additional charges of AOP Resisting Arrest. 

Arraigned the next day she was released to an enthusiastic cheer from the crowd for her action.

“I am from the heartland of America, the middle of America, the line in Kansas and I want the world to know that there is a spark in the middle – even - of the United States,” Norlin said. “I am in love with the people in my country and my community, and the people that I work with every day. This was a no-brainer for me.”

The Free State Advocates travelled to Washington D.C. for an act of civil disobedience protesting proposed cuts to the Housing and Urban Renewal in the recently proposed appropriations bills. The Free State Advocates are a coalition of ten state-wide political organizations: ORGS. 

Represented by fourteen Kansans from across the state, nine members provided jail and court support for Hermosillo while the rest headed back to Capitol Hill to continue their advocacy. 

With a meeting scheduled with the office of Senator Jerry Moran, and after being met with silence after weeks of outreach to their remaining federal delegation, they were determined to bring the voices of their neighbors to their elected leaders.

The Free State Advocates travelled from House offices to Senate offices, popping in to ask to talk with their leadership or aides. In Congresswoman Sharice Davids’s office, they were allowed a comfortable impromptu meeting with Senior staff who heard feedback on the needs to protect immigrants, the poor, and the queer community. 

In Ron Estes’s offices aides met the group with a sense of reservation, asking them to state their issues and were quickly asked to depart. For their meeting with Senator Moran’s staff, they were brought to an internal conference room where they sat around the table discussing concerns about National Guard deployments to Wichita – where the crime rate is four times worse than in D.C. – about education, and about preservation of the federal safety net.

“I’m the only trans member of the group, I need to push my voice just as much as I’m helping to push everyone else's," says Jesseka Greene, from Abilene, who travelled with the group to advocate for special education funding. “There is no difference between my civil rights and your civil rights. Some people feel uncomfortable with me, but that’s their deal and has nothing to do with me. In Moran’s office, I felt heard. I felt the emotional response I got when I got into the details of my experience as a trans woman looking for a job, after a lifetime of struggling through school needing more support.”

On Friday, September 12 the final day of advocacy for the coalition of organizers and activists, they spent the day on Capitol Hill. In Kansas, at meetings and protests across the state they gathered hundreds of yellow notecards with handwritten notes asking the federal government to meet the needs of the average Kansas. 

They lined the steps to the United States Capitol with the voices of their community, constructing a yellow brick road in hopes that their members of Congress will be able to follow the will of the people home.

Local arrested and released by law enforcement after protesting in D.C.

Bar burglary leads to ongoing investigation for a suspect(s), who stole an undisclosed amount of money from an arcade game.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Sunday, September 14, SPD received a call from an employee at "The Hideaway" on&nbsp;540 Willis Ave. The call was made at around 8:30 am, about an unknown suspect(s) who broke into the bar and stole money from an arcade game called "Dragon's Ascent."

Reportedly, the suspect(s) gained entry by breaking a window at around 6:00 am.&nbsp;The amount of money taken from the game is unknown. 

Estimated damage to the bar and arcade game was $8,000.

Bar burglary in South Salina leads to ongoing investigation

Nearly 50 years after it was built, Kansas State University's&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksvhc.org/">Veterinary Health Center</a>&nbsp;has renovated and enlarged its&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksvhc.org/services/specialty-services/surgery/">small animal surgery</a>&nbsp;center. The construction efforts occurred with relatively swift surgical precision thanks to a concerted team effort. The results will increase the surgical capabilities at K-State while enhancing its educational mission.

Elizabeth Davis, interim dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony where she acknowledged all those who participated in the renovation.

"We've had the dream to upgrade our small animal surgery center for a long time, and it took a dream team to make this happen," Davis said. "It began with a design drawn up by Dr. Walter Renberg, the section head for small animal surgery, and turned into actual blueprints by Hadley Stolte, the lead architect and K-State alumnus, at Clark and Enerson. BHS Construction turned it into a reality at lightning speed."

Renberg said the renovation of the surgical suites is a huge step forward for the hospital. The construction took the center from three small operating rooms to five large ones, with centralized induction and recovery rooms that will increase efficiency.

During construction, the small animal surgical services had to be temporarily rehoused in Mosier Hall. Davis said the flexibility of the college's faculty and staff during the period of nine months — from Nov. 25, 2024-Aug. 29, 2025 — allowed the Veterinary Health Center to provide uninterrupted service to clients.

"We anticipate the care for patients will be better, and we should be able to accommodate more, and different, cases," Renberg said. "Ophthalmologic surgery suite improvements and the nurses' workspace changes will benefit our mission tremendously."

Central Kansas Mental Health Center (CKMHC) marks two years of the Co-Responder Program during National Co-Responder and Crisis Responder Week, September 14–20, 2025. 

This week honors the essential work of co-responders and crisis responders in Salina, who provide immediate support to individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis while strengthening the community’s overall safety and wellbeing.&nbsp;

Mental health and substance use challenges can lead to homelessness, incarceration, and emergency room visits, which are more intrusive and costly for communities than earlier interventions and connections to behavioral health services. National data show that one in four people with a mental illness have been arrested, and individuals with serious mental illness are significantly more likely to experience law enforcement encounters that escalate or involve the use of force. These realities highlight the urgent need for compassionate intervention and stronger connections to care.&nbsp;

To address this need, Central Kansas Mental Health Center, the Salina Police Department, Saline County Sheriff’s Office, and Saline Fire Department launched the Co-Responder Program in September 2023, supported in part by American Rescue Plan Act funding through Saline County. This partnership places behavioral health professionals alongside law enforcement officers, ensuring that people in crisis receive immediate support, compassionate care, and connection to longer-term services.&nbsp;

“The Co-Responders have supported individuals with a wide range of needs, not just mental health. People have received help with VA assistance, shelter, food, and clothing,” shared Officer Chris Venables of the Salina Police Department. “I have seen them spend countless hours assisting people. Without their efforts and compassion, many would fall through the cracks and never get the help they need. They also help law enforcement officers and EMS personnel find solutions that, in the past, might have only resulted in jail or a hospital visit.”&nbsp;

In just two years, the program has impacted over 1000 individuals, expanded with the addition of a second co-responder in 2024, and has played a vital role in training first responders. The co-responder team helps lead Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) trainings, which equip officers with de-escalation skills and practical knowledge about mental health. These efforts reduce the need for force and increase the likelihood that individuals in crisis are referred to appropriate care rather than entering the criminal justice system.&nbsp;

Undersheriff Brent Melander of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the program’s impact: “The CKMHC Co-Responder program has been invaluable in assisting deputies during mental health crises and ensuring follow-up with families. Co-Responders often meet with family members after an incident to provide guidance on next steps, answer difficult questions, and connect them with resources. Their partnership helps law enforcement support individuals and families in ways we could not do alone.”&nbsp;

In recognition of National Co-responder and Crisis Responder Week, CKMHC extends gratitude to all crisis responders in our community—including co-responders, law enforcement, emergency medical services, and crisis line staff—whose service makes a lasting difference for individuals and families across Salina.

The US National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Saline County, that has officially taken into effect now and will remain until Wednesday of this week.

According to Saline County Emergency Management, water levels for rivers and creeks have continued to rise from Monday's heavy rainfall. It was estimated between 4 to 10 inches of rain have already fallen across the county, leading to&nbsp;flooded roadways in Brookville&nbsp;and&nbsp;many rural routes that are waterlogged or impassable.

Additional rainfall is expected to occur late tonight (Monday, September 8) into Tuesday morning.&nbsp;Scattered showers and storms are possible, mainly east of Saline County.

Moreover, additional showers and storms are expected to develop from the west on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, bringing extra heavy rainfall.

Then late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, another round of storms are possible.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, allow extra time for commutes and use alternate routes where needed.

Expected to crest at 26.5 feet late tonight into Tuesday afternoon (Moderate Flood Stage). At this level, widespread agricultural flooding is expected. If high flow continues on the Saline River, water could back up on Mulberry Creek, flooding properties including the KOA campground.

W. Old 40 Highway between S. Reese and S. Wyman roads in Saline County, are reportedly closed due to flooding.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has placed road-closed barricades on W. Old 40 Highway between S. Reese and S. Wyman due to flooding.

Another round of thunderstorms anticipated throughout Central Kansas tonight

WASHINGTON (AP) — President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Donald Trump</a>&nbsp;said the U.S. military again targeted a boat allegedly carrying drugs from Venezuela, killing three aboard the vessel.

“The Strike occurred while these confirmed narcoterrorists from Venezuela were in International Waters transporting illegal narcotics (A DEADLY WEAPON POISONING AMERICANS!) headed to the U.S.,” Trump said in a Truth Social post announcing the strike. “These extremely violent drug trafficking cartels POSE A THREAT to U.S. National Security, Foreign Policy, and vital U.S. Interests.”

Trump said the strike was carried out Monday, nearly two weeks after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-venezuela-drug-cartels-05c5b0de282178419d46a3e93fbd2521">another military strike</a>&nbsp;on what the Trump administration says was a drug-carrying speedboat from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-venezuela-destroyers-maduro-drug-cartels-9649e8282c061d9dad41a5dfb54431d4">Venezuela</a>&nbsp;that killed 11.

The Trump administration justified the earlier strike as a necessary escalation to stem the flow of drugs into the United States.

But several senators, Democrats and some Republicans, have indicated their dissatisfaction with the administration’s rationale and questioned the legality of the action. They view it as a potential overreach of executive authority in part because the military was used for law enforcement purposes.

The Trump administration has claimed self-defense as a legal justification for the first strike, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio arguing the drug cartels&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rubio-venezuela-maduro-drug-cartels-b33769bb581454eb8cf5cdf365d5f0c8">“pose an immediate threat”</a>&nbsp;to the nation.

U.S. officials said the strike early this month targeted Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang designated by the U.S. as a terrorist organization. And they indicated&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-venezuela-military-strike-drug-cartels-maduro-eae4f38deb40cb8ce70521c22282e469">more military strikes on drug targets</a>&nbsp;would be coming as the U.S. looks to “wage war” on cartels.

Trump did not specify whether Tren de Aragua was also the target of Monday's strike.

The Venezuelan government did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reported strike.

The Trump administration has railed specifically against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro for the scourge of illegal drugs in U.S. communities.

Maduro during a press conference earlier on Monday lashed out at the U.S. government, accusing the Trump administration of using drug trafficking accusations as an excuse for a military operation whose intentions are “to intimidate and seek regime change” in the South American country.

Maduro also repudiated what he described as a weekend operation in which 18 Marines raided a Venezuelan fishing boat in the Caribbean.

“What were they looking for? Tuna? What were they looking for? A kilo of snapper? Who gave the order in Washington for a missile destroyer to send 18 armed Marines to raid a tuna fishing vessel?” he said. “They were looking for a military incident. If the tuna fishing boys had any kind of weapons and used weapons while in Venezuelan jurisdiction, it would have been the military incident that the warmongers, extremists who want a war in the Caribbean, are seeking.”

Speaking to Fox News earlier Monday, Rubio reiterated that the U.S. doesn’t see Maduro as the rightful leader of Venezuela but as head of a drug cartel. Rubio has consistently&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rubio-venezuela-maduro-drug-cartels-b33769bb581454eb8cf5cdf365d5f0c8">depicted Venezuela as a vestige</a>&nbsp;of communist ideology in the Western Hemisphere.

“We’re not going to have a cartel, operating or masquerading as a government, operating in our own hemisphere,” Rubio said.

Following the first military strike on a boat allegedly carrying drugs from Venezuela, America's chief diplomat said Trump was "going to use the U.S. military and all the elements of American power to target cartels who are targeting America.”

AP and others have reported that the boat&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-military-drugs-boat-venezuela-5d28da68e3ea1b5b1b14829af8aadd7b">had turned around</a>&nbsp;and was heading back to shore when it was struck. But Rubio on Monday said he didn’t know if that’s accurate.

“What needs to start happening is some of these boats need to get blown up,” Rubio said. “We can’t live in a world where all of a sudden they do a U-turn and so we can’t touch them anymore.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street rose to more records on Monday at the start of a week that could show whether the U.S. stock market’s big recent rally has been overdone or prescient.

The S&amp;P 500 climbed 0.5% and topped its prior all-time high, which was set last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 49 points, or 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite added 0.9% to its own record.

Tesla helped lead the way and rose 3.6% after Elon Musk&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/musk-tesla-trump-92df133b91c412a94ebbf2dcb9bbefb6">bought stock worth roughly $1 billion</a>&nbsp;through a trust. The electric vehicle company’s stock price came into the day with a slight loss for the year so far, and the purchase could be a signal of Musk’s faith in it.

Alphabet was the single strongest force lifting the S&amp;P 500 after gaining 4.5%, which brought the total value for Google’s parent company above $3 trillion. Nvidia, Microsoft and Apple are the only other companies on Wall Street worth that much.

The market’s main event for the week will arrive on Wednesday. That’s when the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/federal-reserve-inflation-jobs-rates-trump-powell-164fdc130275c0df17562273e1042bfe">Federal Reserve will announce its latest decision</a>&nbsp;on interest rates, and the unanimous expectation is for the first cut of the year. Such a move could give a kickstart to the job market, which has been slowing.

Stocks have already run to records on the assumption that a cut is coming on Wednesday, though. Expectations are also high that the Fed will keep lowering rates through the end of this year and into 2026. That creates the possibility for disappointment in the market, which would mean drops for stock prices, if the Fed doesn’t end up slashing rates as aggressively as traders expect.

That’s why more attention will be on what Fed Chair Jerome Powell says in his press conference following the decision than on the decision itself. Fed officials will also release their latest projections for where they see interest rates and the economy heading in upcoming years, which could provide another potential flashpoint.

What’s keeping the Fed on guard is a possible jump in inflation because of President Donald Trump’s tariffs. That’s because lower interest rates can give inflation more fuel and send it even higher. And&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-economy-trump-federal-reserve-fabecefa501709184895bf73b3dc698a">inflation has already proven difficult</a>&nbsp;to get under the Fed’s 2% target.

Another threat for Wall Street is if the job market slows too much. In that case, a recession could create a downturn in corporate profits that’s steep enough to swamp the benefits that lower interest rates bring in the near term.

Trump, meanwhile, has pushed angrily for cuts to interest rates. He’s often attacked Powell personally, nicknaming him “Too Late,” and is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-cook-federal-reserve-93c8ca370be995324cd4c535ef486b02">trying to remove one of the Fed’s governors</a>&nbsp;from its board.

“‘Too Late’ must cut interest rates now, and bigger than he had in mind,” Trump wrote on his social media network Monday, using his trademark all-caps style.

On Wall Street, Intel rose 2.9% after trimming its forecast for expenses this year. The move came after it completed the sale of a 51% stake in its Altera business to the Silver Lake investment firm.

That helped offset a 24.7% drop for Hain Celestial, which reported a larger loss for its latest quarter than it did a year earlier. Interim CEO Alison Lewis said the owner of “better-for-you” brands like Terra chips is making moves to stabilize sales “as we recognize our performance has not met expectations.”

Alaska Air Group lost 6.7% after the airline said high fuel costs will likely cause its third-quarter results to come in at the low end of its forecasted range. It also cited higher expenses for overtime pay and passengers’ compensation after bad weather and air-traffic control issues led to difficult operations in the summer, though it saw strong airfare trends thanks to demand for premium seats.

Nvidia edged down by less than 0.1% after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nvidia-china-technology-trade-us-be817903c4b92a2569f2bfa57597956e">China accused the chip company</a>&nbsp;of violating its antimonopoly laws. Chinese regulators did not mention a punishment for Nvidia in a one-sentence statement on the matter but did say they would carry out “further investigation.”

All told, the S&amp;P 500 rose 30.99 points to 6,615.28. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 49.23 to 45,883.45, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 207.65 to 22,348.75.

In the bond market Treasury yields eased, continuing their downward run on expectations for cuts to rates by the Fed.

The latest discouraging data on the economy came Monday from a report showing manufacturing activity in New York state is shrinking, contrary to economists’ expectations for continued growth. It’s the first month of contraction since June.

The next economic update will arrive Tuesday, when the U.S. government will say how much shoppers spent at U.S. retailers last month.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.03% from 4.06% late Friday.

In stock markets abroad, France’s CAC 40 climbed 0.9%, while indexes moved more modestly across the rest of Europe and Asia.

MADRID (AP) — A framework deal has been reached between China and the U.S. for the ownership of popular&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-ban-trump-supreme-court-36c3c3b42f743a35c69e1c74341f1f30">social video platform TikTok</a>, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/treasury-bessent-spain-china-trump-e70c554b5d34cd8f8de30093e9126d4f">weekend trade talks in Spain</a>.

Bessent said in a press conference after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-china-trade-stockholm-tariffs-bessent-lifeng-2cffb7de31169afc8de0c02bedb4683a">the latest round of trade talks</a>&nbsp;between the world's top two economies concluded in Madrid that U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese Premier Xi Jinping would speak Friday to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-china-trump-deal-deadline-ban-38af2dbe2a8307524a85665cf6f96c09">possibly finalize the deal</a>. He said the objective of the deal would be to switch to U.S. ownership.

“We are not going to talk about the commercial terms of the deal,” Bessent said. “It’s between two private parties. But the commercial terms have been agreed upon.”

Li Chenggang, China's international trade representative, said the two sides have reached “basic framework consensus” to properly solve&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-ban-user-reactions-139955932b06753b29d1388f213e3717">TikTok-related issues</a>&nbsp;in a cooperative way, reduce investment barriers and promote related economic and trade cooperation, according to China's official news agency Xinhua.

Li said the two sides had “candid, in-depth" discussions over TikTok and matters of concern to China.

The meeting in Madrid is the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/stockholm-trade-china-us-bessent-he-lifeng-5a0a9e723eb521dc72df00f2ae549a9e">fourth round of trade talks</a>&nbsp;between U.S. and Chinese officials since Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/china-us-tariffs-trump-dce0557297c1a367cac9353d270a3c2e">launched a tariff war</a>&nbsp;on Chinese goods in April. A fifth round of negotiations is likely to happen “in the coming weeks,” Bessent said, with both governments planning for a possible summit between Trump and Xi later this year or early next year to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-china-trade-tariffs-rare-earth-minerals-cbd2482bd2b3a7ce8d47030c4ff1c3d4">solidify a trade agreement</a>.

However, nothing has been confirmed, and analysts say&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/china-us-semiconductors-trade-investigations-madrid-fae364b02c32da4e37b645046a3c17db">possible trade bumps</a>&nbsp;could delay the visit.

Chinese officials didn't immediately speak to the media following the Madrid talks, but Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, who led the Chinese delegation, was seen smiling when he left the venue.

During Joe Biden’s Democratic presidency, Congress and the White House used national security grounds to approve&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-timeline-ban-biden-india-d3219a32de913f8083612e71ecf1f428">a U.S. ban on TikTok</a>&nbsp;unless its parent company, ByteDance, sold its controlling stake.

Trump, a Republican, has repeatedly&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-ban-trump-delay-executive-order-3211a98113615be44cf92b32dca69a8e">extended the deadline</a>&nbsp;for shutting down TikTok, even though the law allows for just one 90-day reprieve, and only if there’s a deal on the table and a formal notification to Congress.

The current extension expires Wednesday, two days before Trump and Xi are scheduled to discuss the final details of the framework deal. Although Trump hasn't addressed the forthcoming deadline directly, he has claimed that he can&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tiktok-china-extension-deadline-4a66fbd0e485db5b3da83c176f22ad11">delay the ban indefinitely</a>.
