A Salina man blames an acquaintance for stealing his vehicle after an overnight stay at his home.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Tuesday, July 22nd at around 5:00 pm, a 54-year old man reported that their vehicle was stolen. The man told police before the alleged incident happened, he had an 'acquaintance stay at his home overnight' on Saturday, July 19th. The following morning, the man reported that his acquaintance 'was gone' as well as his green 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe.

SPD stated that the man suspected his acquaintance stole the vehicle. The man then called the suspect and told them to return the vehicle, but they did not.

The green 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe bears a KS tag,&nbsp;235PPC.

Value is listed at $5,000. The investigation is ongoing.

LINCOLN COUNTY &amp; SALINE COUNTY - The US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS) has issued a flash flood warning for northern Lincoln County until late Monday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS), north Lincoln County is under a flash flood warning until 11:45 pm. Reportedly, radar is estimating 4 to 6 inches of rainfall across northern Lincoln county between Barnard and Lincoln.&nbsp;The storms are nearly stationary with more heavy rainfall likely.

The US National Weather Service stated this flash flood warning is a "very dangerous flooding situation" and to not drive in flooded areas. They are advising people to report any&nbsp;flooding problems to local officials.

According to the US National Weather Service, northwest Saline County is under a "high risk" of flash flooding,&nbsp;especially near the town of Glendale with slow moving thunderstorms producing 4 to 5 inches of rainfall.

Saline County Emergency Management advises people in the Saline County area to stay home during this flash flood warning. Saline County Emergency Management has stated the following:

Avoid low-lying areas and roads near creeks or ditches.

Keep headlights on and drive slowly if travel is absolutely necessary.&nbsp;

Flash flood warning issued for northern Lincoln County and high risk for northwest Saline County

The US National Weather Service has issued an 'extreme heat warning' for Central Kansas until Wednesday evening.

According to the&nbsp;US National Weather Service, on Saturday, July 19th an 'extreme heat warning' was issued to be in effect from now until Wednesday evening (July 23rd). Heat indices were reported to be as high as 110 degrees, with high's being over 100 degrees. 

It was reported that humidity will also remain in place through this period, which will make it feel even hotter. Chances of showers and storms could occur through the week, with the best chances occurring on Thursday, July 24th.

The US National Weather Service has left some tips about staying safe during this advisory:

Work outdoors early or late in the day, and take breaks in the shade as often as possible

Check up on the elderly, sick and those without A/C

Never leave children or pets unattended in your vehicles ('look before you lock')

Extreme heat warning issued in Central Kansas until Wednesday evening

The US National Weather Service Wichita, KS has announced that rain and storms are beginning to move east into central Kansas as of 9:45 pm, late Thursday evening.

According to the US National Weather Service Wichita, KS, the strongest storms will be capable of producing up to '60 mph winds and quarter size hail.

The National Weather Services advises to stay vigilant and have multiple ways to receive any updates or warnings.

UPDATE: Storms moving towards Central Kansas late Thursday evening

Thunderstorms are expected to occur on Thursday evening throughout parts of central Kansas.

According to the US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS), scattered thunderstorms are expected to move into central Kansas this evening with a few strong to severe storms possible. The storms are expected to occur around 7:00 pm and likely last till about 2:00 am, early Friday morning.

The National Weather Service encourages to ensure you have a plan if you are outdoors and storms start to approach your location.

Thunderstorms expected throughout central Kansas on Thursday evening

The Saline County Emergency Management team continues to monitor severe weather conditions and the associated flood risks, as the region enters an active weather period today through tonight on Tuesday, June 17th.

According to Saline County Emergency Management, the National Weather Service has placed much of central and south-central Kansas, including Saline County, under a 'moderate risk' for severe storms beginning this afternoon and continuing into early Wednesday morning. 

Residents should expect the potential for:

Wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph, tennis ball-sized hail, a few tornadoes﻿ and heavy rainfall that could result in localized flooding overnight.

Saline County Emergency Management also notes that&nbsp;area rivers and streams are forecast to rise significantly.&nbsp;

Mulberry Creek near Salina: Expected to crest near 26.5 feet, reaching major flood stage.

Smoky Hill River near Mentor: Forecasted crest near 24.2 feet, approaching moderate flood stage.

Smoky Hill River near New Cambria: Projected to crest around 30.3 feet, above moderate flood stage.

River levels are currently well below flood stage but are expected to rise rapidly as rainfall moves through the area. Residents in low-lying areas near rivers, streams and creeks should prepare for possible flooding and monitor conditions closely. Saline County encourages residents to not drive through flooded roadways and to always follow official detours and barricades.

Saline County Emergency Management remains in close coordination with the National Weather Service and regional response partners and will provide additional information as conditions warrant.

The US National Weather Service Wichita, KS has issued a watch for scattered showers and storms to continue across portions of central and south-central Kansas on Tuesday June 17th. 

According to the National Weather Service, these showers and storms will continue through at least 10:00 am on Tuesday.

Scattered showers and storms for Saline County to continue throughout Tuesday morning  

Multiple rounds of thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected to take place in southeast Kansas and parts of North Central Kansas.

The National Weather Service has issued a forecast calling for multiple rounds of thunderstorms and heavy rain from Friday, May 23rd through Sunday night, May 25th. Thunderstorms are anticipated to occur periodically throughout Russell, Hutchinson and Salina till 3:00 pm and a second round after 7:00 pm on Friday. Very low chance of thunderstorms to occur for Saturday.

Areas such as Chanute and Coffeyville are on a "flood watch" from Friday till Sunday night. Salina is in the "low rainfall" amount range for this weekend.&nbsp;Although confidence is highest for flooding in southeast Kansas, Saline County residents should still remain alert. The risk of severe storms today and again Sunday night makes early preparation critical.

The National Weather Service recommends people to closely monitor weather alerts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Rainfall totals over the next 72 hours could lead to hazardous travel and localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and intersections with poor drainage.&nbsp;

Throughout the day on Sunday, a 60% chance of showers are likely to occur with a possible thunderstorm, mainly after 4pm. Mostly cloudy skies, with a high near 78 degrees. Furthermore, breezy winds will take place with an east wind of 11 - 20 mph and gusts as high as 29 mph.&nbsp;

Into the night, a 70% of thunderstorms are likely to occur. Mostly cloudy skies with a low of around 64. Southeast wind speeds will kick up to around 15 - 18 mph. Prepare as needed.

Smoky Hill Museum accepting entries for their Chili Cook-Off

Saline County Commissioners accepted a grant by the Kansas Department of Commerce (KDOC) on top of other funds, to fulfill improvements to the Senior Service building in Salina.

On Tuesday, the Saline County Commission approved by signature a $712,460 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) provided by the KDOC to assist funds towards the improvements of the Senior Services building. This amount will be added along with donations ($10,000), Earl Bane Foundation ($15,000) and Capital Improvement Program funds ($200,000), making a total of $937,460 for the project cost.

The project includes replacing parking lot, replace uneven sidewalks, install lighting around the building and replacement of the roof.&nbsp;

Saline County Commission accepts grant for the improvements of the Senior Services building

U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the leader in the national, non-partisan movement to limit terms for elected officials, is gathering support from state lawmakers across the nation. Its mission is to get 34 states to apply for an amendment proposal convention specific to term limits on Congress. 

2026 Kansas state senate candidate, Jim DuBois (district 24), has committed support for term limits on Congress by signing the term limits convention pledge. DuBois is the first signer in this race.

The U.S. Term Limits pledge is provided to candidates and members of state legislatures. It reads, “I pledge that, as a member of the state legislature, I will cosponsor, vote for, and defend the resolution applying for an Article V convention for the sole purpose of enacting term limits on Congress.”

In the 1995 case, Thornton v. U.S. Term Limits, the Supreme Court of the United States opined that only a Constitutional Amendment could limit the terms of U.S. Senators and House Representatives. According to Nick Tomboulides, Chief Executive Officer of USTL, the best chance of imposing term limits on Congress is through an Article V Proposal Convention of state legislatures.

“The Constitution allows for amendments to be proposed by either 2/3 of Congress or 2/3 of the states. While we’d like for Congress to take the high road and propose term limits on itself, we know they are too self-interested to do that without external pressure.” said Tomboulides. “That is why it is important to get buy-in from state legislators,” he added. Once proposed, the amendment must be ratified by 38 states.”

Tomboulides noted, “More than 87% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through a congressional term limits amendment. Jim knows this and is willing to work to make sure we reach our goal.”

After the storms from Monday and into Tuesday morning, State Street will be closed&nbsp;between Lightville and Muir Roads due to flooding, according to the Saline County Sheriff's Office.

The vacancy will be created when District Judge Rene Young retires August 1 from her position in Saline County.

The 28th Judicial District is composed of Ottawa and Saline counties.

To be considered for district judge, a nominee must be:

The Salina Fire Department (SFD) has issued a statement regarding a 'small log pile on fire' near Indian Rock Park, which was separate from the publicized 'log jam' at Bill Burke Park.

The following is a statement from the SFD:

On Saturday, July 19th, the Salina Fire Department responded to a report of a small log pile on fire along the Smoky Hill River near Indian Rock Park. It is important to note that this incident was separate from the larger and more publicized log jam located at Bill Burke Park.

Recently, social media comments have proposed burning the Bill Burke Park log jam as a method of removal. The Salina Fire Department strongly advises against this approach, as burning the log jam would pose significant safety risks and could worsen the hazard. If ignited, the fire would likely burn only to the waterline, leaving submerged debris that presents ongoing dangers to the public and waterways.

Additionally, the City’s surface water intake structure is located on the west riverbank adjacent to the log jam. Use of accelerants or chemicals to burn the logs could cause contamination in our public drinking water.

The Fire Department reminds residents that starting fires on City property, including parks, is illegal and endangers first responders and civilians alike. Violators may face charges of arson or aggravated arson, with increased penalties if the fire results in injury to responders or bystanders.

The City of Salina and the Fire Department are actively working to find safe and effective solutions to manage and remediate the log jam at Bill Burke Park. In the meantime, the public is urged not to attempt burning or walking on the log jam due to the inherent safety risks.

Residents should always exercise caution near any water body and adhere to the City of Salina’s ordinance on recreational fires:

· Fires must be at least 25 feet away from structures or combustible materials unless contained in a Fire Marshal-approved container.

· Combustible materials within 25 feet of the fire must be cleared beforehand to prevent the spread.

Smoky Hill Museum invites the public to participate and sign up for Street Fair Parade

The Salina Public Library turned up the volume on vocabulary this past Saturday with its first-ever&nbsp;Adult Spelling Bee Showdown, a delightfully nerdy night of competition, laughter, and community spirit.

Sponsored by Hutton Design + Build, the event brought in a full house of spellers and spectators, raising over $4,500 to support the library’s&nbsp;Re-Imagining Our Library&nbsp;initiative. Funds will go toward transforming the Library’s Youth Services department into a more dynamic, accessible, and welcoming space for Salina’s young people and families.

Ten teams of four faced off in a bracket-style tournament that proved spelling isn’t just for kids. Each player had to take the mic every round — no phones, no writing, and no spellcheck — just teamwork, guts, and a few strategic twists. Before the showdown, teams could buy limited-use “advantage passes” for a do-over or a new word, and any team following a misspelled word could steal it on the spot.

Between the nail-biting tie-breakers and the clever passes, it was clear: Salina is full of sharp spellers and quick thinkers. The result was a high-stakes, high-hilarity evening filled with gasps, giggles, and plenty of unexpected upsets — including strong finishes from the “Wildcard” teams, made up of individuals who signed up solo and were paired with strangers just before the event. With no shared history or prep time, two of these wildcard teams still cracked the top three.

“We loved seeing adults cut loose and have fun with something so classically academic,” said Allyson Walker, SPL Head of Fundraising &amp; Development. “It reminded us how powerful libraries can be in bringing people together, in smart, silly, joyful ways.”&nbsp;

CHICAGO (AP) — Matthew Boyd pitched seven crisp innings for his 11th win, and the Chicago Cubs spoiled Rich Hill’s return to the majors with a 6-0 win over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Nico Hoerner, Dansby Swanson and Matt Shaw each had two hits as Chicago ended a two-game slide. Shaw, Hoerner, Pete Crow-Armstrong, Seiya Suzuki and Carson Kelly had RBIs.

Boyd (11-3) gave up four hits, struck out six and walked one in winning his fifth straight start. The left-hander retired the first eight Royals batters and didn't allow a hit until Nick Loftin led off the fifth with a line single.

Caleb Thielbar followed with a perfect eighth and Daniel Palencia worked around two singles in the ninth to complete a six-hitter.

Hill (0-1)&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-cubs-rich-hill-oldest-e09c2d43a7a83309e1cf9696c3e80d71">became the oldest active player in baseball</a>&nbsp;after the Royals selected the 45-year-old from Triple-A Omaha. He allowed three runs — one earned — and six hits in five innings. The left-hander threw 90 pitches (55 strikes), walking two and striking out one.

It was the debut of Hill's 21st season in the majors and his first with Kansas City. The Royals are his 14th major league team, matching Edwin Jackson’s record.

Hill and the Royals fell behind 2-0 in the second when the Royals committed two errors, botching potential double plays. Crow-Armstrong doubled in a run off Hill in the fifth.

The Cubs put the game away with three runs in the seventh off Jonathan Bowlan.

After Loftin singled in the fifth, the Royals loaded the bases with one out on Freddy Fermin’s bloop and John Rave’s bunt single. Swanson snared Kyle Isbel’s broken-bat liner at shortstop, then dived to tag out Fermin before he could get back to second for an inning-ending double play.

The Cubs stole six bases in the game, including four off Hill. That included a double-steal by Justin Turner and Shaw in the second, Chicago scored its final run with on double-steal with Kyle Tucker stealing home and Suzuzki second base in the seventh.

Royals RHP Seth Lugo (6-5, 2.94 ERA) will face Cubs RHP Colin Rea (8-3, 3.80) on Wednesday.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– K-State women’s basketball was successful in the classroom as well as the court during the 2024-25 season, as the Wildcats received Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Honor Roll Special Mention for its team grade point average last season. K-State was one of eight Big 12 programs to be included on the WBCA Academic Honor Roll.

Under the direction of head coach Jeff Mittie, K-State women’s basketball completed the 2024-25 academic year with a team grade point average of 3.317. This was the fourth straight season K-State received Special Mention honors for the WBCA Academic Honor Roll.

During the 2024-25 season, K-State received six Academic All-Big 12 honors, two College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District citations and one CSC Academic All-American Second Team member (Serena Sundell).

In Mittie’s 11 seasons at K-State, the Wildcats have collected 65 Academic All-Big 12 citations, five Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipients, 12 Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team honorees, 14 CSC/CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees, six CSC/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and one Senior CLASS Award finalist.

K-State WBB Receives Special Mention on WBCA Academic Honor Roll

CHICAGO (AP) — Salvador Perez homered twice and drove in four runs, Jac Caglianone and John Rave added solo shots and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago Cubs 12-4 on Monday night.

Chicago’s Matt Shaw and Carson Kelly went deep off Noah Cameron (4-4) in the second, but the rookie lefthander was in control for most of the first six innings. He allowed all four Cubs runs and seven hits while striking out six to help the Royals win their second straight.

Ben Brown (4-7), recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Iowa, replaced opener Ryan Brasier in the second and gave up six earned runs and seven hits while striking out four over the next four innings. Caglianone had a solo shot off Brown in the second and Perez added a two-run homer in the fourth.

Kansas City got RBI hits from Jonathan India and Bobby Witt Jr. to start a four-run fifth. The two scored on a throwing error and wild pitch, respectively.

Rave homered in the seventh off Chris Flexen, who gave up Perez’s two-run shot in a four-run eighth that ensured the Cubs’ second straight loss. Relievers John Schreiber and Andrew Hoffman kept Chicago scoreless, and Witt and Rave each finished with a pair of RBIs.

Shaw drove in three runs for the Cubs, who gave All-Star centerfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong the night off due to knee soreness.

Witt made the most of his at-bat in the fifth inning. He drove in Kyle Isbel with a single to put the Royals in front for good, stole second and went to third on Kelly’s errant pickoff throw, then scored on Brown’s wild pitch for the final run of the inning.

The top third of the Cubs’ order — Nico Hoerner, Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki — was a combined 0 for 11.

Cubs LHP Matthew Boyd (10-3, 2.34 ERA) makes his first post-All Star break appearance Tuesday. Kansas City has not named a starter.

⚾ Perez, Caglianone and Rave homers power Royals over the Cubs

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;C.J. Jones&nbsp;will return to K-State for his senior season in 2025-26 after withdrawing from the transfer portal.

The East St. Louis, Ill., native was one of four players who played in all 33 games in 2024-25, earning 9 starts, after two seasons (2022-24) at UIC. He averaged 5.7 points on 40.7 percent (70-of-172) shooting, including 30.9 percent (17-of-55) from 3-point range, with 1.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 0.5 steals in 18.9 minutes per game as a junior.

Jones scored in double figures in 5 games in his first season as a Wildcat, including a season-high 12 points vs. Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 19 and at UCF on Feb. 26.

Jones has seen action in 95 games with 59 starts in his college career, including 62 games with 50 starts at UIC. He has scored 744 points during his college career on 39.7 percent (286-of-720) shooting from the field, including 34.6 percent (71-of-205) from 3-point range and 64.7 percent (101-of-156) from the free throw line.

Jones has 31 career double-digit scoring games, including three 20-point performances. His career-high of 25 points came against Bradley on Jan. 13, 2024, while at UIC. He led the Flames in assists (159) and minutes played (1,102) as a sophomore in 2023-24, while he was second in scoring (11.4 ppg.) and steals (1.0 spg.).Jones is one of four players who are returning to K-State in 2025-26, joining rising juniors&nbsp;Mobi Ikegwuruka&nbsp;and&nbsp;Taj Manning&nbsp;and sophomore&nbsp;David Castillo.

Jones to Return for his Senior Season

OPENING STATEMENT:&nbsp;“Alright, welcome back. Great to be back (at) Missouri Western State University, man. We love this place, and it’s a great place to have training camp. We appreciate all the people and the jobs that they do for us here. They roll out the red carpet and again, take care of us like no other. So, we appreciate all of that and we look forward to getting this camp going. As far as any of the injuries go, I can update you real quick. PUP, the people that will start on PUP, (Kristian) Fulton will start on PUP, Jawaan Taylor and Tre Watson. Those three will start there but everybody else is good to go. We should be ripping and ready by tomorrow. We jump right into it with testing tomorrow and then we have meetings, both business meetings for the NFL and also meetings for the football part of it. Other than that, we look forward to the season getting started. It should be a great environment up here for learning and for conditioning with the heat that we are going to have – and we normally have up here. It should get us ready and build a nice foundation for us to start the season. As far as Rashee (Rice) goes, I mean that is obvious news out there. Now, we’re going to progress as normal with him, he’ll go in and take all the reps that he'd normally take. We always rotate that position, so depending on what happens here, in the future, whoever needs to play will be able to step in, and they’ll know what they’re doing and be in good shape to do it. But like I said, just progress as normal. Other than that, time is yours.”

Q: Do you have any idea of the timeline for the punishment handed down from the NFL for Rashee Rice?

REID:&nbsp;“No. I don’t have anything.”

Q: Have you had any conversations about it?

Q: What is the length of absence you expect for Kristian Fulton and Jawaan Taylor?

REID:&nbsp;“Well we’re hoping that – we’re hoping that its relatively fast. I’d tell you, Jawaan (Taylor) is probably closer right now.”

Q: Is there anything different about coming to training camp after a Super Bowl loss?

REID:&nbsp;“This part stays tough. It’s never an easy camp and it builds you a foundation that you can bank on. It’s important that the guys come in with the right frame of mind, (and) they know that. They pass a word down to the young guys that they better be ready to go. That helps us in the long haul.”

Q:&nbsp;What would it mean to be able to sign George Karlaftis to a long-term deal to this organization?

REID:&nbsp;“That would be a great deal. I think that’s already done, just so if you need some breaking news (laughter). That’s a great thing. And he’s a heck of a player, and he’s done a great job here, and he’s profited from that. Our team also profits from him being around, so it’s a win-win there.”

Q<a>:</a>&nbsp;What did&nbsp;you&nbsp;<a>see in</a>&nbsp;him late in the season last year?

REID:&nbsp;“He is a relentless player, I mean that’s what you get with George (Karlaftis). He’s&nbsp;<a>smart;</a>&nbsp;relentless. You can trust and know that he is reliable, so you can trust that he is going to be there and do the right things and go 100 miles an hour doing them. Very well respected that way.”

Q:&nbsp;How do you plan to start with the initial left tackle rotations with Josh Simmons and Jawaan (Taylor)?

REID:&nbsp;“Oh, Jawaan (Taylor) is out for the beginning, so we’ll just flip those two guys, and they’ll&nbsp;<a>work in</a>&nbsp;there, and we’ll&nbsp;<a>go from</a>&nbsp;there. (Offensive Line Coach) Andy (Heck) rotates all those guys anyways.”

Q:&nbsp;How important was it for you as a coach to have these young, core guys locked up for long term deals?
