JEFFERSON COUNTY—A Kansas man jailed for an alleged violent attack on his father is facing additional charges.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig, 59-year-old Michael J. West died Monday evening from injuries in a weekend attack.

Just after 8:30a.m. September 9, deputies responded to 6956 Shawnee Lane, Lake Ridge Estates in Ozawkie, according to a media release. The victim reported that he had been hit by a blunt object several times.

First responders found&nbsp; West with life-threatening injuries. EMS transported him to&nbsp;Stormont Vail Hospital&nbsp;in Topeka where he died.

Investigators later found the suspect identified as 30-year-old Michael T. West, the victim's son, in Leavenworth. 

Deputies arrested and booked him into the Jefferson County Jail on requested charges of attempted murder in the first degree. He his being held without bond, according to online jail records.

Sheriff Herrg, the murder weapon was not a golf club as some have speculated.

Kansas man accused of violent attack on his father

KANSAS CITY, KAN. – A Kansas woman was arraigned Monday on federal charges in connection with a years-long scheme to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars from her employer, Muddy River Credit Union. Rita Hartman, 68, of Atchison was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 23, 2023, according to the United State's&nbsp; Attorney.

According to court documents and other information presented in court, Hartman was the manager of Muddy River Credit Union (formerly Bradken Federal Credit Union) from the early 1990s through January 2021. 

Muddy River served the employees of the Bradken foundry located in Atchison, Kansas. In 2013, the Governor of the State of Kansas appointed Hartman to the Kansas Credit Union Council, which advises the Kansas Department of Credit Unions on issues and needs of credit unions.

As manager, Hartman had responsibility for and control over all aspects of Muddy River’s finances and books and records. From at least 2010 through December 2020, Hartman is accused of using her position to steal money from Muddy River. 

Hartman allegedly did so by crediting fraudulent deposits and loan payments to her or her relatives’ accounts or by stealing cash deposits, then concealing her conduct by altering Muddy River’s books and records, and falsifying information submitted to Muddy River’s regulators.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating the case.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;No. 15 Kansas State erupted with a late first-half score and then clamped down on Troy in the second half, as the Wildcats snapped the Trojans’ 12-game winning streak with a 42-13 victory and continued an impressive stretch of 40-point performances in front of a sellout crowd at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

K-State led just 14-10 when Will Howard drove the Wildcats 66 yards on five plays and hit sixth-year senior wide receiver Phillip Brooks with a 39-yard touchdown strike with 10 seconds left in the first half for a 21-10 halftime lead. Then the Wildcats held the Trojans to four consecutive three-and-outs to start the second half to turn a sleeper into a blowout.

“We needed that game,” K-State head coach Chris Klieman said. “We had a lot of adversity, especially in the first half, and we kind of rose above it. The momentum flipped a little bit. Great job by (offensive coordinator) Coach (Collin) Klein and our offense getting the touchdown before halftime.

“We talk about a four-over-four mentality, which is the last four minutes of the first half and the first four of the second half. That was critical for us to get that score. We need to continue to get better and clean some things up, but that’s a quality opponent we beat.”

Troy entered with the second-longest winning streak in the FBS and left Manhattan with its biggest blowout defeat since a 37-point loss against Appalachian State on November 28, 2020.

K-State has scored 40 points in four straight regular-season games for the first time since the middle of the 2002 season.

Howard completed 21-of-32 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns and one interception, and he added two rushing touchdowns for the Wildcats, 2-0, who have allowed just one touchdown in their first two games.

“It wasn’t perfect by any stretch, but I think we needed this,” Howard said. “This is a game where we learned a lot. This was a really, really good team. Troy won 12 straight and they had one of the tougher defenses I’ve gone against. Those dudes were hitting and heated us up pretty well. That was a really good game for us to learn from.”

Troy quarterback Gunnar Watson threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Chris Lewis to make it 14-10, but that’s as close as the Trojans, 1-1, could get as the Wildcats stymied star running back Kimani Vidal and made multiple defensive stops coming out of the locker room.

K-State outscored Troy, 21-3, over the final two quarters.

“Something we emphasized a lot this offseason is called the four-over-fours, so those four minutes before halftime and four minutes after is a real critical part of the game,” K-State linebacker Austin Moore said. “That’s something we talked about at halftime. It was huge for us.”

While Vidal finished with 83 rushing yards on 17 attempts one week after darting for a school-record 248 rushing yards in his opener, K-State went to Brooks, who had seven catches for 94 yards and one touchdown and rushed for another score on a jet sweep.

“The first one was a walk-in touchdown and the second one, somebody had to make a play,” Brooks said. “We were struggling on offense. It’s crazy because I just put my head down to work and looked up and saw the results. I’m just making a play. That’s my mindset.”

Brooks led a skill-position group that enjoyed solid performances as Jadon Jackson caught a nine-yard touchdown early in the first quarter and running back Treshaun Ward took a shovel pass into the end zone for a 35-13 lead with 8 minutes, 48 seconds left in the game.

K-State outgained Troy 397-286 in total offense and held the Trojans to just 6-of-17 on third downs while the Wildcats racked up four quarterback sacks, including two by defensive end Khalid Duke. It was Duke’s third-down sack late in the first half that enabled the Wildcats to regain possession and drive for the score just before halftime.

K-State surrendered just 98 total yards in the second half.

“All of us are dogs on the field,” Duke said. “Everybody is getting to the ball, and everybody is one unit and communicating and dominant. We just dominate every single down, not letting any offense get momentum and drive the ball down the field, and just playing as a team. When you see us together celebrating as a team, that’s the Mob.

K-State won the coin toss, took the ball, and drove 71 yards in eight plays, starting with the pass and mixing in the run. Howard found Brooks twice, Ward showcased his elusiveness with a 20-yard run, and Howard capped the drive by hitting Jackson, who was running right to left, in the middle of the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown.

The Wildcats outgained Troy 147-40 in the first quarter and wasted little time reaching the end zone early in the second quarter. Facing second-and-goal at the 2-yard line, Howard handed off to Brooks on a jet sweep and the wide receiver caught a block from Ben Sinnott before running past the right pylon for a 14-0 lead.

Moments later, K-State’s defense stepped up when Brendan Mott applied pressure and Will Lee III intercepted a pass intended for Deshon Stoudemire and returned the ball 11 yards to K-State 46. However, Howard threw an interception in the end zone and the Trojans amassed a 14-play, 73-yard drive capped by a 24-yard field goal to get on the scoreboard for the first time.

“I know (Howard) was kicking himself for the one pick that he threw into the end zone, probably getting a little bit greedy potentially, but he really settled in after that and said, ‘I made a mistake, I’ve got to own it, and I’ve got to come back really well,’” Klieman said. “He settled in and played really well.”

After K-State was unable to move the ball, confident Troy came back with a 75-yard drive that ended when 6-foot-3 Chris Lewis caught a 21-yard touchdown over Lee to trim K-State’s lead to 14-10.

However, K-State, in the face of adversity during an underwhelming quarter of football, finished on a high note.

Howard expertly drove down the field with 49 seconds left until halftime. He rushed for 15 yards, then Brooks hauled-in a pass on a crossing route at the 24-yard line, and he raced past a block from Jackson for a 39-yard score to put K-State ahead, 21-10, with 10 seconds left in opening half.

“There were a lot of opportunities we had,” Howard said. “We didn’t capitalize on a couple opportunities. We learned a lot from this going into a big week next week.”

It wasn’t until the final play of the third quarter that Vidal popped off a long run when he weaved inside the defense for 46 yards to the K-State 23-yard line. However, K-State’s defense stiffened, and the Trojans settled for a 37-yard field goal.

“We gave them one big run, but other than that, we did an awfully good job in the rush game,” Klieman said. “We work hard on our run game, and we’re hitting our fits and hitting them physically and pushing the pile back.”

It all goes back to the four-over-four philosophy.

“Our run defense, we’re pretty elite,” cornerback Jacob Parrish said. “We had the four-over-four. We did a good job with that.”

JACKSON COUNTY, Kan. —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon after a chase and crash

Just after 9p.m. Sept.6, a Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2016 red Dodge Dart north of 198th and K-16 Highway for a traffic infraction, according to Sheriff Tim Morse.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Casey Cane Jordan Crawford, 30, Holton, allegedly failed to stop and fled eluding law enforcement. 

Deputies lost sight of the vehicle near 158th and T. Road due to dusty conditions. On Thursday morning, a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy located the wrecked Dodge Dart near 190th and the Jefferson County line. 

Deputies later located Crawford walking on Banner Road in Holton late Thursday evening. They arrested and booked him&nbsp;into the Jackson County Jail on requested charges of felony fleeing and eluding law enforcement, interference with law enforcement and driving while suspended.&nbsp;

Crawford has previous convictions for ID theft, battery, aggravated assault, flee or attempt to elude law enforcement and interference with law enforcement, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.

One of the first opportunities for the public to get a feel for the new facility is "Slumber in the Slammer," which will be held on Friday, November 3.&nbsp;

Experience life as an inmate complete with dinner served, cell extraction, DEMO by the SORT team, and equipment demonstrations.&nbsp;

Registration is open until Oct. 1. Registration forms are available at the Saline County Sheriff's Office, 251 N. 10th Street.

With week one of the 2023 high school football season already in the books, the NCAA is looking like one of the more stacked leagues across the state of Kansas and will see another intriguing clash this Friday as Sacred Heart travels to Minneapolis.

The Knights got off to an excellent start at Wichita Trinity a week ago, but lost several key starters which resulted in a late comeback, and a heartbreaking 36-26 defeat.

“That was a hard loss,” Knights head coach Norm Jennings said. “We were up until the end but we had enough injuries pile up that we just couldn’t sustain that pace. Five guys went out at the same specialty group and that allowed them to get away from us in the fourth quarter.”

On the other side of this matchup, Minneapolis will be riding high after handling their business against a Republic County squad still in the process of rebuilding, as the Lions walloped the Buffs 59-0.

“Our level of intensity continues to get better and our underclassmen are understanding their role,” Lions head coach Tom Flax said. “It’s hard to tell a lot of things from one week but I’ve got a lot of confidence in this team and I was impressed with what I saw on Friday.”

With the statuses of five starters very much up in the air for this week two matchup, an already thin 1A Sacred Heart squad will have to dig deep, but did establish some confidence in their depth throughout that week one matchup.

“We had tons of positive takeaways from that game,” Jennings said. “Our boys worked so hard on this new offense all summer long and we saw so many players step up in a big way on Friday night. Seeing so many kids prove their value and show us our depth is a huge positive as we build this program.”

Despite the injuries, this is a Sacred Heart team that Minneapolis knows better than to take lightly, and the Lions will be preparing for a real battle this Friday night.

“Sacred Heart always plays with confidence and they have skilled players,” Flax said. “When I look at them I know they’re going to be well coached and they’ll understand what the task at hand is. They’re going to do their best to take advantage of what they perceive we struggle with and they have a long, storied tradition of winning behind them.”

To bounce back and get the season back on track, the Knights will need to employ all the speed at their disposal to keep the Lions' defense back on their heels for four quarters.

“We need to see fast and nasty against fast and nasty,” Jennings said. “Our offense is designed to be fast-paced and to take advantage of the speed of the defense in the open field. I think this game is going to be incredibly fun for the fans to watch because both teams will be going full throttle.”

Meanwhile, for the Lions to take another step toward proving themselves to be the real deal, Minneapolis will need to value each possession, and ensure that a majority of the chunk plays in this game belong to them.

“We need to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball,” Flax said. “We’ve got to limit big plays as a defense and create big plays as an offense. Winning the turnover battle will also be a big key for us.”

Sacred Heart travels to Minneapolis for NCAA Duel

Kansas Wesleyan Men's Soccer scored three goals in the final ten minutes of Thursday's soccer match with Kansas Christian College to pull away for a 4-0 win at JRI Stadium at the Graves Family Sports Complex.

The late goals were sparked by Wesleyan's relentless pressure against Kansas Christian's gimmick defensive alignment, where the Falcons at times had six or more players on the back line to try to stop KWU from scoring, while only pressing offensively a couple times in the match.

Other films would’ve treated such ideas as magic (or worse, as “Asian mysticism”); but&nbsp;Past Lives&nbsp;is intriguingly philosophical without ever smothering the heart of its romance. Greta Lee and Teo Yoo are wonderful as the adult Nora and Hae Sung, conveying more passion and intimacy through Skype conversations than most actors can muster in sweaty embraces. 

Forbidden love is perhaps the most intoxicating kind, and&nbsp;Past Lives&nbsp;tantalizes viewers before culminating in an unexpected, powerful emotional climax.&nbsp;&nbsp;

KANSAS CITY —A Kansas City man has been charged with two counts of knowingly burning or exploding items by allegedly placing an explosive device on an ATM and later damaging a business with an explosive.

Police booked 38-year-old Luther Turner into jail on July 2, according to online jail records.

According to court documents, on June 15, police responded to reports of two separate incidents involving illegal explosive devices. 

Just after 1a.m. police officers were called to a bank in Kansas City where an illegal explosive was used in an attempt to gain access to an automated teller machine.

Just before 8:30a.m. a.m., officers were dispatched to a business in Kansas City following a report of a non-residential burglary. During the investigation, detectives determined that an explosive device had been used in an attempt to breach the establishment.

Investigators determined an explosive had been placed against a window on the building's south side, damaging both the window and its frame.

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating three suspects on drug allegations.

The vehicle pulled in and parked behind a closed business in the 2500 block of 10th Street. A female passenger exited the vehicle, and began walking away as soon as the officer got behind the vehicle. K9 Menta was deployed for a free air sniff of the vehicle, and indicated to the presence of illegal narcotics.

The female passenger that left the vehicle, identified as 34-year-old Davina Demoret, age 34, was located and detained, as well as another passenger, identified as&nbsp; 56-year-old Lisa Whiting.

A search of the vehicle was conducted, and methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and a pair of brass knuckles were located. 

All three individuals were placed under arrest, and booked in lieu of $10,000 bonds at the Barton County Jail.

WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. (AP) — A grizzly bear that&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/grizzly-bear-attack-yellowstone-montana-d1ecb3cb3539751422196fc0ce61bb27" target="_blank">fatally mauled a woman</a>&nbsp;on a forest trail west of Yellowstone National Park in July and also attacked a person in Idaho three years ago was killed after it broke into a house near West Yellowstone over the weekend, Montana wildlife officials said Wednesday.

Later that day agency workers captured the cub and shot the 10-year-old female grizzly with authorization from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, because grizzly bears are protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Through genetic analysis and other identifying factors, the bear was confirmed to have been involved in the July 22 fatal attack on Amie Adamson, 48, a former teacher from Kansas, about 8 miles (13 kilometers) from West Yellowstone.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/grizzly-bear-attack-yellowstone-montana-50ad4fa33b3db1a51ac5aa1b4fd03ebc" target="_blank">Efforts to trap the bear</a>&nbsp;at that time were unsuccessful.

Both encounters with people were believed to have been defensive responses by the bear, officials said.

The bear’s 46-pound (21-kilogram) male cub is being held at the state wildlife rehabilitation center in Helena while arrangements are made to transfer it to a zoo.

BILLINGS, Montana (AP) — Wildlife workers put out bear traps for a third night Monday as they try to capture a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/grizzly-bear-attack-yellowstone-montana-d1ecb3cb3539751422196fc0ce61bb27">grizzly bear that killed</a>&nbsp;a woman who was traveling alone on a forest trail near Yellowstone National Park.

Amie Adamson, 48, Derby, Kansas, died in Saturday's fatal mauling near the Montana-Idaho border, the Gallatin County Coroner's Office said. The victim was a marathon runner, and officials said she was likely running or walking at the time of the attack.

Officials ruled out a rare&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-montana-wildlife-chico-a8c0b75ae1390130fce3834157ea1dc8">predatory attack</a>, which suggests Adamson instead died following a chance bear encounter as she traveled by herself in a wooded area frequented by grizzly and black bears.

She was killed a few hundred yards from a trailhead and a private campground and RV park, said Morgan Jacobsen with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. The bear was traveling with one or more cubs, and there were no indications that it tried to eat the victim.

Authorities have not decided whether they would kill the adult bear if it’s captured or whether they would relocate it, Jacobsen said.

Adamson is a former English teacher who left the classroom in 2015 to backpack across much of the U.S. and later wrote a book, “Walking Out,” about her career and experiences.

The victim's mother described her as a hiker, marathon runner and “just a beautiful free spirit." KWCH-TV in Wichita reported.

“She lived for experiences,” Janet Adamson said, adding that her daughter did not care about material possessions and died “doing what she loved."

A hiker found her body around 8 a.m. Saturday. The cause of death was excessive blood loss caused by a bear mauling, the coroner’s office said.

Adamson was wearing running shoes and did not have bear spray, a deterrent that wildlife experts recommend people carry in areas frequented by bears, Jacobsen said.

She had been working nearby and often ran or walked on the trail in the early morning, according to officials and local residents.

“This person was likely out for a morning jog along the trail, and that's when this happened,” said Jacobsen.

Tracks of a grizzly bear and at least one cub were found at the scene of the attack, which occurred near the Buttermilk Trailhead 8 miles (13 kilometers) west of West Yellowstone, a busy summer tourist town and gateway to the national park.

The trail is used by hikers, horseback riders and people in off-road vehicles.

Rangers issued an emergency closure for areas of the Custer Gallatin National Forest. It did not include Yellowstone National Park.

Local resident Bill Youngwirth said people in the area were aware of the mauling and the forest closure, but they weren't panicked over the attack because the bear could have struck out defensively after being surprised when the victim came around a corner.

The attack happened about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from several vacation homes that Youngwirth rents adjacent to the forest.

“I tell everybody, ‘Better take bear spray and know how to use it,’" he said. “And the big thing is, don't go alone."

A trail camera captured an image of a grizzly bear with two cubs in the area on Saturday night. There have been no sightings since, Jacobsen said. Traps set for the bears on Saturday and Sunday nights came up empty, and attempts to locate the bears from an aircraft were unsuccessful.

As time goes by, he added, trapping becomes less effective as chances increase of catching a bear that wasn’t involved in the attack.

Laura Skinner, who co-owns West Yellowstone Rodeo and Creek Side Trail Rides, said the attack did not interrupt its horseback rides on private property or its nightly rodeos.

“We have bears all the time. The only precaution we’re taking is we’re checking trails. We send a rider out first to check to make sure there’s nothing there,” she said.

“I’m pretty sure with all the activity with them tracking it and trying to hunt it down, it’s probably nowhere near here,” she added.

Grizzly bear populations in the northern U.S. Rocky Mountains grew significantly over the past several and the animals in recent years have been showing up in places they hadn't been seen for generations. Since 2010, grizzlies in and around Yellowstone have killed at least nine people. Attacks remain relatively rare in the region, which draws several million tourists each summer.

Encounters with humans can prove deadly for bears, too: A five-year-old female grizzly in Glacier National Park was euthanized last week after officials said it got used to eating food from campgrounds and was becoming increasingly aggressive.

Grizzlies are protected under federal law outside of Alaska. Elected officials in the Yellowstone region are pushing to lift protections and allow grizzly hunting.

State officials last week warned visitors and residents of grizzly bear sightings throughout the state, “particularly in areas between the Northern Continental Divide and the Greater Yellowstone ecosystems.”

They implored those camping and visiting parks to carry bear spray, store their food while outside and tend to their garbage.

Bear blamed for fatal mauling of Kan. woman killed after breaking into a house

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after a weekend arrest.

Just after 10:30 p.m. Sept. 2, a sheriff's deputy came in contact with Wendell Akins, 63, Ellinwood who was stopped at 250 N. Main Street in Hoisington, according Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

Akins had an outstanding felony warrant issued by the Barton County District Court. The warrant was for felony DUI, failing to stop at an injury accident and driving while suspended. During the course of the arrest, the deputy located a bag containing suspected methamphetamine as well as drug paraphernalia.

Those charges have a $10,000 bond, according to Bellendir.Akins&nbsp;has numerous previous convictions for DUI and for driving while suspended, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.
