WICHITA (AP) — A rare&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ring-of-fire-eclipse-what-to-know-df2bd3b1d69854421f241bf9b49cf123">“ring of fire” eclipse of the sun</a>&nbsp;cuts across the Americas on Saturday, stretching from Oregon to Brazil.

For the small towns and cities along its narrow path, there was a mix of excitement, worries about the weather and concerns they'd be overwhelmed by visitors flocking to see the celestial event, also called an annular solar eclipse.

Unlike a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/11d5c10bf3be44c994eedab6e39f4e6f">total solar eclipse</a>, the moon doesn’t completely cover the sun during a ring of fire eclipse. When the moon lines up between Earth and the sun, it leaves a bright, blazing border.

Saturday’s path: Oregon, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico and Texas in the U.S., with a sliver of California, Arizona and Colorado. Next: Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Brazil. Much of the rest of the Western Hemisphere gets a partial eclipse.

Viewing all depends on clear skies — part of the U.S. path could see clouds. NASA and other groups planned to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlY79zjud-Q&amp;ab_channel=NASA">livestream it</a>.

With a chance of rain in its forecast, the small town of Reedsport near Oregon's Pacific Coast moved its eclipse festival inside so that a bounce house and games wouldn’t get soaked in the mud.

"But we’re still hoping that we might get a glimpse of it,” said city official Rosa Solano.

Weather was less of a concern in tiny Baker, Nevada, where the population hovers around 100. Inn and general store owner Liz Woolsey made T-shirts and planned a slate of activities including a drum circle and a dance party. Her seven rooms have been booked for over a year.

“For a little place, we’re putting on a good show," said Woolsey, who became an eclipse enthusiast after seeing the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/11d5c10bf3be44c994eedab6e39f4e6f">2017 total solar eclipse</a>&nbsp;that swept the U.S. from coast to coast.

Tens of thousands could get a double treat in Albuquerque, New Mexico. For the city's annual air balloon fiesta, which ends this weekend, hundreds of colorful hot air balloons lift off around dawn, hours before the eclipse briefly dims the skies.

Colombia’s Tatacoa desert was playing host to astronomers helping a group of visually impaired people experience the eclipse through raised maps and temperature changes as the moon blots out the sun.

At the Cancun Planetarium, young visitors built box projectors to indirectly and safely view the ring of fire. The ancient Maya — who called eclipses “broken sun” — may have used dark volcanic glass to protect their eyes, said archeologist Arturo Montero of Tepeyac University in Mexico City.

Towns and national parks in the path braced for a huge throngs. Officials in Oregon's Klamath County urged residents to stock up on groceries and fill their gas tanks in case traffic backs up on its two-lane highways. Utah's Bryce Canyon expected Saturday to be the park's busiest day of the year, spokesperson Peter Densmore said. Brazil's Pedra da Boca state park, known for its rocky outcrops for climbing and rappelling was also expecting crowds.

The entire eclipse — from the moment the moon starts to obscure the sun until it’s back to normal — is 2 1/2 to three hours at any given spot. The ring of fire portion lasts from three to five minutes, depending on location.

Next April, a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/where-to-see-2024-total-solar-eclipse-113061a08d63e579c698017312f7eea0">total solar eclipse</a>&nbsp;will crisscross the U.S. in the opposite direction. That one will begin in Mexico and go from Texas to New England before ending in eastern Canada.

The next ring of fire eclipse is in October next year at the southernmost tip of South America. Antarctica gets one in 2026. It will be 2039 before another ring of fire is visible in the U.S., and Alaska will be the only state in its direct path.

Rare 'ring of fire' solar eclipse Saturday

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged school threat and have made an arrest.

Just after 7p.m. Wednesday, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office received information regarding a potential threat to the <a href="https://usd437.net/tallgrass">Tallgrass Student</a> Learning Center,&nbsp;5740 SW 61st Street in Topeka. The school is in USD 437 Auburn-Washburn.

A student made threatening comments regarding bringing a firearm to school the next day, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.

The Shawnee County Criminal Investigation Division immediately contacted school administrators and the suspect identified as a 14-year-old.

At 10:30p.m., deputies arrested the 14-year-old and booked the teen into the Shawnee County Juvenile Department of Corrections on requested charges of felony criminal threat and felony interference with law enforcement.

14-year-old accused of threat to bring gun to Kan. school

What is your profession? I am a lawyer and mediator, also a singer-songwriter and a horse boarding stable owner.

Give a brief bio on yourself in 100 words or less: I grew up in Salina, went to Heusner and South, then to K-State for a degree in Elementary Education. Later, I went to Harvard for a law degree, then came back to Kansas. For the past 23 years, I’ve been back in Salina. As a mediator, I get people together on different sides of an issue and help them reach agreement. As a singer-songwriter I sing about 100 gigs a year, including many in Salina schools through Salina Arts &amp; Humanities. I’ve been on the Salina school board for two terms. My husband and I run a horse boarding stable.

As a school board member what specific initiatives or policies would you prioritize in order to improve educational outcomes and support the overall well-being of public school students in our community? In line with our strategic plan, I want to ensure that our students are excellent communicators and critical thinkers and have good social-emotional skills. If they have these skills, they will be on their way to a successful adulthood. To get there, they need great teachers (which we have), good facilities (which we have), and an all-around enriching school experience (which we are always working to improve). I want us to be sure that even kids who don’t have every advantage at home come away with these critical skills. This means they go to school every possible day, overcoming our significant challenge of chronic absenteeism. We are currently working on all these things.

In recent years many books have been removed from the shelves of public libraries due to their alleged inappropriate content. As a school board member where do you stand on this issue? We have a long-standing policy to respond to book challenges. We went through this policy in the past couple of years when three community members, none of whom had children in our schools and none of whom had read the book, objected to a book that is in our high school libraries,&nbsp;All Boys Aren’t Blue. As directed by the policy, there were three levels of appeal. At each of the first two levels, different teachers, administrators, and community members read the book and decided it had value and should stay. At the last level of appeal, the whole school board read the book and decided it had value and should stay. I am glad so many people got to read the book. I am sorry the objectors never read it. Children are not harmed by reading books – they are enriched.

Parental engagement and community involvement are crucial for the success of any school district. What strategies would you implement to increase collaboration between parents, citizens, and educators? Our schools are trying and trying to get more parents involved in their children’s education. Each year, there are at 4 days just for parents to come to the school to meet with the teachers. All year, the parents have access to Skyward, the online record of their children’s educational progress. On any day, a parent can call or email their child’s teacher(s) through the school websites, and teachers work hard to answer. Parents may visit their children in school. In our recent work to lower chronic absenteeism, school staff have been calling homes when the children are absent to see if help is needed to get them to school. Each school has a site council - including parents, teachers and community members - which meets regularly to find ways to improve the school and keep communication open between school and home. If parents are interested in involvement, there are many, many ways for them to do that. Just in the past year, we have made major efforts to ensure that school is a welcoming place for families as well as for students and staff.

Please explain why you are running for school board. I have enjoyed the challenging work I’ve encountered on the school board. I am interested in serving another term. I am also concerned about the number of people in our community and elsewhere who have become convinced that public schools are the enemy. The anti-public-school narrative comes from an outside source that is hostile to the idea of communities working together across all our differing backgrounds and opinions. I want Salina to be a great place to live, not just pass through on the way to somewhere else. I want it to be a great place to grow up, a great place to move to, a great place to come back to. For that, we need great public schools.

Saline County Jail Activity, Oct. 12

TOPEKA (AP) —Kansas became the 10th state in the nation Wednesday to require two-person railroad crews despite objections from freight railroads, but the industry may challenge the rule in court as it has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rail-safety-ohio-crew-size-derailment-lawsuit-429df55468cc112d7057d4dd1dcf5322">in other states</a>&nbsp;like&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-transportation-budget-rail-safety-derailment-bc3e97140763a5accd8bc40cfa664611">Ohio</a>.

The major freight railroads have&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/railroads-to-renew-push-for-one-man-crews-in-contract-talks-3f97553f0ec9474784249fa4a17e1169">long pushed</a>&nbsp;to cut crews down to one person, but unions have resisted because they believe it’s safer to have two people working together to operate trains.

Gov. Laura Kelly said two-person crews “will protect workers from the effects of fatigue, prevent train derailments and reduce risks in the many Kansas communities along our railroad tracks.” The new administrative rule took effect Wednesday.

The railroad industry maintains there isn't enough evidence to show that two-person crews are safer and many short-line railroads already operate with a single person aboard.

“Regulatory efforts to mandate crew staffing such as the latest in Kansas lack a safety justification,” said spokesperson Jessica Kahanek with the Association of American Railroads trade group.

Kahanek said she didn't want to speculate whether the industry will file a lawsuit challenging the Kansas rule the way it did in Ohio. The railroads generally argue in their lawsuits that the federal government should be the only one to regulate the industry to ensure there's a uniform set of rules.

At least&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/railroads-freight-safety-derailment-state-laws-42fa5ddae7486e44c7383def082d31a3">a dozen states</a>&nbsp;impatient with the federal government's reluctance to pass new regulations on railroads have tried to pass restrictions on the industry related to minimum crew size, train length and blocked crossings.

Both the Ohio and Kansas crew-size rules were proposed in the months after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-pete-buttigieg-evacuations-ohio-explosions-64908a6416662b5866809387f210aee5">fiery Norfolk Southern derailment</a>&nbsp;in eastern Ohio in February. That crash forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes around East Palestine while&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-updates-bf5a60de2243cd6f7f730096aa33294c">hazardous chemicals burned</a>&nbsp;in the days afterward. The cleanup continues and residents continue to worry about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-contamination-fears-brockovich-fc68b402096a4f5f8598a657f7e399f8">possible long-term health effects</a>.

The other states that have rules requiring two-person crews on the books are California, Wisconsin, Arizona, West Virginia. Minnesota, Washington, Nevada and Colorado. Those state regulations could be unnecessary if the Federal Railroad Administration approves a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/588d6f7829c4836b9d2feff5c21a5097">proposed rule</a>&nbsp;to require two-person crews or if a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ohio-train-derailment-congress-6288cdfb0b4381de4c9bfb05199b8ba6">package of rail safety reforms</a>&nbsp;proposed in Congress that includes that requirement is approved. But the rail safety bill hasn't received a vote in the Senate or a hearing in the House, so it's&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/east-palestine-train-derailment-safety-regulations-railroad-4db52c68daf68da05425b5b70363fb0a">prospects are uncertain</a>.

Jeremy Ferguson, who leads the Transportation Division of the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers union that represents conductors, praised the new Kansas rule alongside the governor Wednesday.

“We have all worked hard to show that safety comes first, and corporate profits will never be placed ahead of all the citizens of this great state,” Ferguson said.

Kahanek, the industry spokesperson, said the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.aar.org/issue/crew-size/">railroads believe</a>&nbsp;crew size should be determined by contract negotiations with the unions — not by regulations.

Union Pacific is in the process of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/union-pacific-railroad-crews-kansas-2f87d473a41a8c999945043ecab597c1">testing</a>&nbsp;out how quickly a conductor in a truck can respond to problems on a train compared to the conductor aboard the locomotive, although the railroad is still maintaining two people at the controls of its trains during the test.

Gov. announces new rule to improve safety for Kan. rail workers

Smoky Hills PBS announced that they will be bringing Clifford The Big Red Dog to the Little River Fall Festival in the MTC Parking Lot on Saturday, Oct. 21.&nbsp; Clifford will be greeting children in Little River from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there is no admission fee to attend this event.&nbsp; This event is FREE!

Clifford the Big Red Dog coming to Little River

MCPHERSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a standoff in McPherson.

Just after 3:30p.m. Tuesday, dispatch received reports of a man brandishing a firearm at multiple individuals in Marquette, according to a media release from the McPherson County Sheriff's office.

Deputies responded and found a man outside his residence with the firearm. Deputies attempted to have the man surrender when he pointed his firearm at deputies and retreated inside his home. 

Multiple agencies including the McPherson Joint Special Response Team, Lindsborg Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, Marquette EMS, and Reno County Sheriff's Office were called in to assist with negotiations and securing the perimeter. 

After a 5-hour standoff, the man identified as 68-year-old Marlin Carpenter, according to online jail records, was taken into custody without further incident. 

He was transported to McPherson Hospital for medical evaluation and later booked into McPherson County Jail on requested charges of Criminal Threat, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Interference with LEO and Aggravated Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer. He is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating the murder of a Kansas woman and have a suspect in custody.

Just after 3p.m. Sept. 6, police were dispatched to the 2300 block of N. Chautauqua in Wichita for a welfare check&nbsp; on66-year-old Brenda McNeely, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.

&nbsp;Officers received information that she could be inside the residence and possibly injured and in need of help. The door to the residence was forced open and officers located with a fatal stab wound inside of the residence. She would be pronounced deceased on the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect identified as 35-<a href="https://ssc.sedgwickcounty.org/InmateSearch/Details.aspx?Id=350241">year-old Antonio Jones</a>, according to booking records, was involved in a disturbance with Brenda, which ultimately led to her stabbing.

Officers acted swiftly and diligently, pursued leads to apprehend Jones. who has now been taken into custody.&nbsp; He is being held in Sedgwick County on a $250,000 on charges of First Degree Murder, according to online jail records.

Boom! Salina Street Art &amp; Mural Festival is back for its second year, and it's bigger and better than ever.

The streets of downtown Salina, KS have been transformed into a vibrant canvas of art. This event features a variety of world-class muralists from around the globe, each bringing their own unique style of art to the area.

"This is an amazing opportunity for our community to experience something truly special," said festival organizer Eric Montoy. "We'll have 7 artists painting at 7 different locations scattered around downtown Salina This festival is truly unique in the fact that it is an invite only event for the artists. They are hand selected by our curator, Joe Iurato, based on their style, portfolio of work and relevance in today’s mural scene. And let’s not forget we will be welcoming back legendary photographer Martha Cooper for her second year at Boom.”

The inaugural Boom! Salina Street Art &amp; Mural Festival was held last year and was a huge success. Attendees were able to witness stunning murals being created by a diverse group of artists that are still visible throughout Salina downtown today.&nbsp; This year's festival promises even more exciting eye candy that you won't want to miss out on.

October 5th – Artists will be painting at various locations in downtown Salina, and the murals will be in full swing.

Cheap Trick will be performing at the Stiefel Theatre starting from 7:00 pm. To enjoy this electrifying performance, you can secure your tickets at stiefeltheatre.org.

October 6th - Join us at 6:30 PM at the Salina Art Center for 'First Friday'. The highlight of the day will be the 2023 BOOM! Salina Artist Panel Discussion and the Photography Show featuring the 2022 BOOM! Salina works of Martha Cooper and Tanner Colvin.

First Friday by Salina Downtown will also feature other live music and art galleries.

October 7th - Wrap up the festival with a day full of live music at the Love Salina Stage in Campbell Plaza next to the Prickly Pear. Bands will be performing continuously from 12 pm to 10 pm to keep the festive energy flowing.

PichiAvo (Pichi, b. 1977; Avo, b. 1985) is a duo of artists from Valencia, Spain. Recognized for their skill at creating connections between painting and sculpture in urban settings, they adopt a thoroughly innovative approach in their artistic fusions. A balanced combination of classical art and the most contemporary urban art can be identified in their work. From the outset PichiAvo shunned artistic individuality, joining forces to create an absolutely unique body of work using a conceptually urban idiom, both in the street and studio.

ADD FUEL (Diogo Machado) is a Portuguese visual artist born in 1980 with a degree in Graphic Design from Lisbon's IADE – Creative University. He spent several years working in design studios in Portugal and Munich, until he started focusing on his artistic work in 2007. ADD FUEL is known for combining traditional tile designs with contemporary visual elements to create original and emotional motifs, playing with the viewer's perception and possibilities of interpretation. He has exhibited his art in galleries and museums worldwide and has also created several public art interventions. ADD FUEL currently resides and works in Cascais, Portugal.

EL MAC (Miles MacGregor) is an urban artist known for his striking visual aesthetic and unique style. Born in Los Angeles, he began developing his artistic skills at an early age. He is famous for his large-scale murals that incorporate photorealistic portraiture and Chicano art traditions, showing a deep appreciation for his cultural heritage. EL MAC has explored a myriad of themes in his work, such as spirituality, identity, and social justice. He has been commissioned for high-profile mural projects all over the world, including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in the United States and the Mesa Contemporary Arts Center in Arizona. EL MAC's artistic philosophy prioritizes creating work that communicates a sense of connection and authenticity

to its viewers. His focus on creating art that reflects a diverse range of cultures and experiences has cemented his reputation as one of the most influential urban artists working today.

MadC (Claudia Walde) is a German urban contemporary artist born in the 1980s. She began her artistic journey with a spray can as a teenager and has since become a famous name in the world of street art and urban contemporary art. MadC holds two graphic design degrees and has authored multiple books on street art. Her exhibitions have been held in galleries worldwide, and she has painted numerous murals globally, showcasing her unique style that draws its roots in graffiti and deploys vividly colored, dynamic calligraphy with layers to depict energy and emotions. Her notable commissioned works include the permanent glass installations in the Museum Reinhard Ernst in Germany, opening in 2023. MadC's work has been featured in prominent media outlets such as National Geographic, The Guardian, and Der Spiegel. She continues to redefine urban art globally, leaving her colorful mark wherever she goes.

Pat Perry (b. Michigan, 1991) is an American artist primarily painting, drawing, photographing, and implementing large-scale outdoor murals around the world. Many of Pat’s projects have supported various social causes including cooperative projects with the Beehive Design Collective, Apt Arts, the UN Commissioner for Refugees, and No More Deaths. Recent solo exhibitions include shows at Hashimoto Contemporary NYC, Takashi Murakami’s Hidari Zingaro Gallery in Tokyo, and a museum show at UICA in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Pat lives and works in Detroit.

Andrea von Bujdoss, known as Queen Andrea, is a NYC-based artist celebrated for her work as a muralist, graffiti artist, typographer, and graphic designer. She began her artistic journey as a graffiti writer in the early 1990s, developing her skills to become a significant influence in the street art space. Her work uses a bold mix of color and design, and she has created notable works everywhere from the walls of NYC’s urban landscape to collaborations with major brands internationally. Her artwork has been shown in exhibitions around the world, cementing her reputation as one of the most influential artists in the graffiti, streetwear, and urban culture arenas. Her most recent paintings are intricate and intense explorations of geometry, color, and form that create fantastical, bright worlds of abstraction. Through her art, Queen Andrea continues to challenge norms and inspire others in the urban art scene.

American Born. 1972. I was raised in the working-class neighborhood of Highlandtown in Baltimore, MD. My interest in art began with NYC subway graffiti in the mid-1980s. Having

learned printmaking methods in high school, I eventually shifted my technique toward stenciling. In 2000 I began exhibiting my work. Adapting images from photographs and working with spray paint, stencils, and paper to create interior/exterior works, I seek to convey an authentic contemporary document that illustrates the triumph of the human spirit as experienced by those in underrepresented urban and rural environments. I work and live in Queens, New York with my wife and two children.

Martha Cooper is a documentary photographer who has specialized in shooting urban vernacular art and architecture for over forty years. In 1977, Martha moved from Rhode Island to New York City and worked as a staff photographer at the NY Post for three years. During that time, she began to document graffiti and B-Boying, subjects which led to her extensive coverage of early Hip Hop as it emerged from the Bronx. These photos, published worldwide, helped make Hip Hop the predominant international youth movement it is today.

📸 2023 Salina Street Art & Mural Festival

The month of October is known for three main holidays or celebrations – Halloween, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Pride.  While these days are amazing to engage in, did you know there are many, many ways to celebrate in October? 

 First and foremost, it is Autumn, which happens to be my most favorite season.  Fall has a whole vibe all its own.  It brings on cozy and layered apparel, cold weather comfort food recipes, and then there is the foliage. 

 October is packed with food-centric holidays, such as National Dessert Day.  As a self-declared foodie, I appreciate this.  There are also creative celebrations, such as National Fine Art Appreciation Day.  October is chock full of fantastic ways to celebrate and I have created a condensed version of several (mostly foodie) reasons to celebrate something for each day in October.  While these may not be for everyone, there is bound to be something for everyone.

I personally could almost be a vegetarian, but I like some things like chicken and turkey way too much to completely sever ties with them.  If this is something up your alley, finding a plant-based version of many popular dishes is simple.  In the spirit of World Vegetarian Day, try some vegetarian recipes in the book Vegetarian Recipes For Everyone by Deborah Madison.

October 2: International Day of Non-Violence

The day represents a time to spread the message of peace and tolerance and is celebrated on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday.  Gandhi’s work advocated for nonviolent protest to stand up for freedom and civil rights. October 3: ‘Mean Girls’ Appreciation Day

Who does not love the 2004 movie Mean Girls?  One of my fav’s from that time frame, quotes from the movie are ingrained in pop culture, and the movie featured prominent acting talent.  The movie was written by Tina Fey who is a Saturday Night Live alum and starred in the movie alongside Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Tim Meadows, and Amanda Seyfried.  To get your Mean Girls fix and experience “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” or “Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen”, check out the DVD or audiobook here at the Library and throw on an extra-large pink polo shirt!

Cinnamon rolls…I mean, need I say more?  Ok, I will.  Whether for breakfast or a late-night hankering fulfillment, cinnamon rolls are perfect for chilly weather.  In my opinion, these are best served warm with freshly brewed coffee or a glass of milk.  For Cinnamon Roll Day, try making some from scratch.  The Salina Public Library has several books on baking with yeast and dough to give you a starting point.  Take a glance through the catalog to find what suits you.  If you are new to this type of baking, even if they do not look that pretty, they are sure to taste delicious with maple, caramel, cream cheese, or any flavor of icing.

People should always be nice to each other, but on this day, keep it at the forefront of your mind and commit to having positive interactions.  Compliment a co-worker whose contributions sometimes go unnoticed, surprise a family member or friend with a “just because” gift, or donate to a local organization.  You never really know what someone is going through, so just be kind.

I do not know about you, but for me, this is one of the most important seasonings you can add to your dishes.  You can never have too much garlic!  For Garlic Lovers Day, order your favorite garlic-centric dish such as a pizza with extra garlic dipping sauce, garlic knots, or garlic chicken and broccoli.  The possibilities are basically endless because garlic is delicious in a plethora of savory dishes.  Get some inspiration in the User’s Guide To Garlic by Stephen Fulder.

Plain black coffee serves its purpose – caffeine.  However, iced coffee is not only delicious and refreshing, it affects the body in a different way than the traditional hot brew.  Drop for drop, you are getting the same amount of caffeine.  However, most people drink hot coffee at a different rate than cold coffee, which impacts how quickly the caffeine kicks in.  The faster you drink it, the faster the effects are felt.  I do not know about you, but I prefer my caffeine fix to come with a quickness.  

Frappes originated in Greece when a businessman was unable to locate a hot water source to make instant coffee.  He used cold water and ice instead, and the rest is history.  There are many different flavor combinations and establishments where you can experience a frappe-style beverage, so pick your favorite and enjoy.

If you have never tasted a pierogi, you are seriously missing out.  Pierogies are nothing short of tiny heavenly plump pockets of deliciousness.  The first time I tried one was when I went perusing local shops in Boston. While old friends are staples, there is always room to make new connections.  You never know where you will find a new acquaintance who can become your new best friend. National Fine Art Appreciation Day falls on the birthday of artist Pablo Picasso.  To commemorate the day, try your hand at any artistic expression you enjoy, whether it be painting, dance, photography, music, or otherwise. While these days are amazing to engage in, did you know there are many, many ways to celebrate in October? First and foremost, it is Autumn, which happens to be my most favorite season. Fall has a whole vibe all its own. It brings on cozy and layered apparel, cold weather comfort food recipes, and then there is the foliage. October is packed with food-centric holidays, such as National Dessert Day. As a self-declared foodie, I appreciate this. There are also creative celebrations, such as National Fine Art Appreciation Day. October is chock full of fantastic ways to celebrate and I have created a condensed version of several (mostly foodie) reasons to celebrate something for each day in October. While these may not be for everyone, there is bound to be something for everyone.<h2>October 1: World Vegetarian Day</h2>I personally could almost be a vegetarian, but I like some things like chicken and turkey way too much to completely sever ties with them. If this is something up your alley, finding a plant-based version of many popular dishes is simple. In the spirit of World Vegetarian Day, try some vegetarian recipes in the book Vegetarian Recipes For Everyone by Deborah Madison.<h2>October 2: International Day of Non-Violence</h2>The day represents a time to spread the message of peace and tolerance and is celebrated on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday. Gandhi’s work advocated for nonviolent protest to stand up for freedom and civil rights. The movie was written by Tina Fey who is a Saturday Night Live alum and starred in the movie alongside Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Tim Meadows, and Amanda Seyfried. To get your Mean Girls fix and experience “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” or “Stop trying to make ‘fetch’ happen”, check out the DVD or audiobook here at the Library and throw on an extra-large pink polo shirt!<h2>October 4: Cinnamon Roll Day</h2>Cinnamon rolls…I mean, need I say more? Ok, I will. Whether for breakfast or a late-night hankering fulfillment, cinnamon rolls are perfect for chilly weather. In my opinion, these are best served warm with freshly brewed coffee or a glass of milk. For Cinnamon Roll Day, try making some from scratch. The Salina Public Library has several books on baking with yeast and dough to give you a starting point. Take a glance through the catalog to find what suits you. If you are new to this type of baking, even if they do not look that pretty, they are sure to taste delicious with maple, caramel, cream cheese, or any flavor of icing.<h2>October 5: National Be Nice Day </h2>People should always be nice to each other, but on this day, keep it at the forefront of your mind and commit to having positive interactions. Compliment a co-worker whose contributions sometimes go unnoticed, surprise a family member or friend with a “just because” gift, or donate to a local organization. You never really know what someone is going through, so just be kind.<h2>October 6: Garlic Lovers Day</h2>I do not know about you, but for me, this is one of the most important seasonings you can add to your dishes. The possibilities are basically endless because garlic is delicious in a plethora of savory dishes. However, most people drink hot coffee at a different rate than cold coffee, which impacts how quickly the caffeine kicks in. The faster you drink it, the faster the effects are felt. I do not know about you, but I prefer my caffeine fix to come with a quickness. Frappes originated in Greece when a businessman was unable to locate a hot water source to make instant coffee. He used cold water and ice instead, and the rest is history. SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug allegations.

On Oct. 6, members of the Topeka Police Department Narcotics Unit served a search warrant in the 1900 Block of SE 24th Street related to an ongoing investigation, according to Police Lt. Ronnie Connell.

While conducting the search warrants, officers located methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. As a result, Baileah Flynn, 25, was transported to the Shawnee County Department and booked into jail on requested charges Possession of methamphetamines and Possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police found meth and marijuana at Kansas home

SEDGWICK COUNTY — A man from Texas is going to prison for a deadly Memorial Day weekend crash in 2021 that killed a Kansas woman.

A judge sentenced 37-year-old Scott Cabrales to 24 months with 36 months post-release supervision, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

In July, Cabrales he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence and no proof of insurance, according to the district attorney's office.

In May of 2021, police responded to an injury accident with a driver pinned in a vehicle at Maple and Martinson, according to Officer Charley Davidson.

Upon arrival, officer’s located 80-year-old Frankie Baxter pinned inside of a vehicle. Police with the assistance of the Wichita Fire Department removed her from the vehicle and she pronounced deceased on the scene, according to Davidson.

She turned to travel eastbound on Maple.A 2008 Maxda Six driven by Cabrales, who lived in Wichita at the time, was eastbound on Maple at a high rate of speed and believed to be under the influence of alcohol.&nbsp; The Mazda struck the rear driver's side of the Hyundai. The impact caused the Hyundai to strike the curb and a tree.EMS transported Cabrales to an area hospital for medical treatment of minor injuries and then booked him into jail.
