SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an inmate death at the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.
Just before 6a.m. Sunday, jail staff found the 35-year=old inmate unresponsive in his cell, according to Sheriff's Lt. Nathan Gibbs.
Onsite staff provided immediate medical attention and responding EMS transported the inmate to St. Francis Hospital via EMS, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 6:45 a.m. The preliminary cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Investigation Division were notified. The inmate’s family has been notified of his death and his identity is being withheld at their request.
The inmate was being held in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on felony charges and had been in custody since January, according to Gibbs.
The Sedgwick County Detention Facility has booked over 14,000 people so far this year. This is the third in-custody death for 2023.
