A minor earthquake shook part of southeastern Saline County this morning.

The Kansas Geological Survey reported that a 2.1 magnitude quake struck southeast of Salina at 7:32 a.m. Wednesday. It was centered just east of S. Whitmore Road between E. Water Well Road and E. Farrelly Road.

Minor quake rattles part of county Wednesday morning

SMITH COUNTY —A pair of earthquakes shook north central Kansas on Friday afternoon and on Saturday morning.

Just after 4p.m. Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported a quake that measured a magnitude 2.9 was centered seven miles north of Downs. 

A preliminary report from the Kansas Geological Survey indicated the quake measured 3.5 magnitude and said it was centered just east of the Smith County line in Jewell County.

KSGS also reported a 2.6 magnitude quake at 8:16 a.m. on Saturday in Smith County.&nbsp; There are no reports of damage.&nbsp;The threshold for damage usually starts at a magnitude 4.0.

Pair of earthquakes shake north-central Kansas

JEWELL COUNTY - A 3.5 magnitude earthquake rattled part of western Jewell County this afternoon.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the quake struck at 4:15 p.m. Friday and was centered a couple of miles east of the Jewell County-Smith County line north of I Road.

ASSARIA -- A small earthquake shook part of southern Saline County this morning.

The Kansas Geological Survey reported that a 2.3 magnitude temblor struck southeast of Assaria at 7:05 a.m. Tuesday. The quake was centered just south of E. Hedberg Road and just east of S. Holmes Road.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the 2.7 magnitude quake struck at 11:42 a.m. Thursday. It was centered just south of E. Salemsborg Road between S. Simpson Road and S. Holmes Road.

Small quake shakes part of southern Saline County Thursday

Parts of Dickinson County have been rattling a bit the past couple of days.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 2.5 magnitude quake struck northeast of Hope at 11:40 p.m. Friday. The quake was centered west of Sage Road and south of 1000 Avenue.

A second 2.5 magnitude quake shook part of the county southwest of Hope at 7:58 a.m. Saturday. That temblor was centered east of Indy Road and south of 300 Avenue.

Earthquakes rattle parts of Dickinson County

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A series of earthquakes shook Wichita&nbsp; Sunday and continued early Monday including the largest quake in five year in the city. At 6:08p.m. Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported a quake measuring a magnitude 3.9 on the richter scale was centered in the Eastborough section of Wichita, near 13th and Rock Road.

The agency reported two additional quakes Monday morning and four additional quakes on Sunday in the same east central portion of the city. The first measured a magnitude 3.4 just before 6:30a.m. Sunday.

Three additional quakes including two just after 7a.m.&nbsp; measured a magnitude 3.5 and 3 on the richter scale and a 2.2 magnitude quake at 8:30a.m.

The quakes just before 9a.m. Monday measured 3.1 and 3.2, according to the USGS.

On December 30, an earthquake measuring a magnitude 3.8 and a 3.7 magnitude temblor on December 19, shook the same area. All the Sunday and Monday quakes are considered relatively small, according to the U.SGS.&nbsp;The threshold for damage usually starts at 4.0.

Based on an investigation, the Kansas Corporation Commission does not believe the seismicity in Wichita is tied to any oil and gas activities in the area.

Update: Small earthquakes continue to shake Wichita

GYPSUM -- Another small earthquake rattled the area southwest of Gypsum late last night.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, the magnitude 2.1 quake struck at 11:02 p.m. Tuesday near the location of another 2.1 quake on Sunday. Tuesday night's earthquake was centered northeast of the intersection of South Whitmore Road and East Hedberg Road, KGS noted.

Another small quake hits southwest of Gypsum

GYPSUM -- A small earthquake shook part of southern Saline County early this morning.

A 2.1 magnitude quake rattled the area at 5:35 a.m. Sunday, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. The earthquake was centered just north of East Hedberg Road and east of South Whitmore Road.

Small quake shakes part of southern Saline County early Sunday

GRANT COUNTY, Okla. — An earthquake near the Kansas border with Oklahoma shook residents in both states just before 8 a.m. Friday.

The quake measured a magnitude 4.2 and was centered approximately 3 miles west of Manchester, Oklahoma, and just 14 miles from Anthony, Kansas, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Friday's quake follows a series of over two dozen quakes in the Wichita area since late November, including a 3.7 magnitude quake on Dec. 19. It was the strongest quake in the Wichita area in five years. There are no reports of damage or injury from Friday's quake.

4.2 magnitude earthquake shakes portions of Kansas 

HOPE -- Two additional earthquakes shook parts of Dickinson County overnight.

After a 3.1 magnitude quake struck northeast of Hope late Monday afternoon (<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/7188c043-7d31-4f47-8ce1-bfaf98c8761d">read here</a>), a second quake rattled the area to the east of Hope at 11:52 p.m. Monday, according to the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS). That quake, reported to be a 2.5 magnitude temblor, was centered just east of Paint Road between Kansas Highway 4 and 600 Avenue.

A third earthquake shook the area northeast of Hope and northwest of Herington at 12:51 a.m. Tuesday. The 2.3 magnitude quake was centered north of 800 Avenue between Sage Road and Trail Road.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a magnitude 2 quake struck at 4:55 p.m. Sunday south-southwest of Gypsum. It was centered between South Kipp Road and South Whitmore Road and East Lapsley Road and East Hobbs Creek Road.

Small earthquake rattles part of southeastern Saline County

WICHITA — State regulators have expanded their <a href="https://kcc.ks.gov/news-12-23-20" target="_blank">investigation</a> into what’s causing a recent string of earthquakes in eastern Wichita.

Regulators
 say the earthquakes are most likely naturally occurring, but want to 
make sure oil and gas operations aren’t contributing.

The
 earthquakes began around Thanksgiving, with three happening in the span
 of four days. The trend continued with a couple of days of quakes, then
 a break, then a couple of days of quakes, then a break. That lasted 
until Dec. 30, when the largest quake, a 3.9 magnitude, shook Wichita.

“You
 have an earthquake and everyone looks at the closest (oil and gas) well
 and blames it on the well,” said Rick Miller, a senior scientist with 
the Kansas Geological Survey. “Well, that’s not how it works.”

He
 said it’s not unheard of for there to be earthquakes in northeast 
Wichita. A known fault line sits nearby and people have recorded 
earthquakes there as far back as 1919.&nbsp;

For Miller, seeing earthquakes happening there again made sense.

“The
 real question,” he said, “is there anything that we can have an 
influence on that might have hit a pressure point for this particular 
fault?”

Since the beginning of November, the area in and around <a href="https://chasm.kgs.ku.edu/ords/elog.quake3.SelectQuakes?f_month1=NOV&amp;f_year1=2020&amp;f_month2=JAN&amp;f_year2=2021&amp;f_30=&amp;f_360=&amp;sort_by=1" target="_blank">Wichita has experienced more than two dozen earthquakes</a>.

None
 of them have been big enough to cause any damage. They’ve also appeared
 to have come to a stop. There haven't been any major earthquakes in the
 area since the beginning of the year.

But the seismic activity 
that did happen was enough to trigger the state’s seismic action plan. 
The plan was created in 2014 in response to the massive increase in the 
number of earthquakes happening in Harper and Sumner counties in 
south-central Kansas.

The action plan requires regulators at the 
Kansas Corporation Commission to look at how much wastewater oil and gas
 operations are injecting into the ground within a six-mile radius of 
any string of earthquakes.

“Just because there have been natural 
earthquakes doesn’t mean that there couldn’t be induced earthquakes in 
that same area,” said Ryan Hoffman, director of the conservation 
division of the KCC.

When investigating the connection between 
oil and gas operations and earthquakes, regulators look for two things: A
 large increase in the total amount of wastewater being pumped into the 
ground in an area, or wells with irregular bursts in the amount being 
pumped underground.

The investigation into the Wichita 
earthquakes found only six wastewater disposal wells within the six-mile
 boundary. They were all located a few miles north of Wichita near 
K-254.

Data showed that during the last five years, all six wells combined 
were consistently pumping about 9,000 barrels of wastewater a day. 
That’s a relatively small quantity compared to what regulators found 
around the spike of earthquakes in Harper and Sumner Counties in 2015 
and 2016. There, regulators found groups of dozens of wells each pumping
 as much as 15,000 barrels of wastewater a day.

In the case of 
Harper and Sumner counties, earthquake experts were able to clearly see 
that the number of earthquakes mirrored almost exactly the rise and fall
 of how much wastewater was being injected.

“What we saw there 
was nothing like what we see in Sedgwick County in terms of the large 
number of injection wells that were disposing of large volumes,” Hoffman
 said.

Ultimately, state regulators determined that the six wells
 investigated near Wichita did not contribute to the recent string of 
earthquakes. But the state’s investigation concluded before the largest 
of the earthquakes had even hit.

While the state still doesn’t 
suspect oil and gas operations played a role, it has decided to expand 
its investigation beyond what’s required in the state’s seismic action 
plan. It’s now gathering data from all wastewater injection wells within
 a 15-mile radius.

Miller, the expert from the Kansas Geological 
Survey, said he’s in favor of expanding the investigation. He said the 
geology of the area is complicated, and a large underground ridge nearby
 could be directing the pressure created from the wastewater pumping in 
unexpected directions.

“We don’t know that’s what’s going on,” he
 said. “We’re not suggesting it is going on, but we want to look at all 
possibilities.”

Hoffman said he doesn’t think the state’s seismic action plan needs to be changed or expanded officially.

He
 also says he doesn’t expect to find anything in the expanded 
investigation, but in a state with a history of links between oil and 
gas operations and earthquakes, it’s worth having more data than less.

“If there was something that caused those earthquakes,” Hoffman said, “we want to be able to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

that same area,” said Ryan Hoffman, director of the conservation 
division of the KCC.When investigating the connection between 
oil and gas operations and earthquakes, regulators look for two things: A
 large increase in the total amount of wastewater being pumped into the 
ground in an area, or wells with irregular bursts in the amount being 
pumped underground.The investigation into the Wichita 
earthquakes found only six wastewater disposal wells within the six-mile
 boundary. They were all located a few miles north of Wichita near 
K-254.<div><iframe src="https://www.google.com/maps/d/embed?mid=1lkqDwBPx9kGr_-BAe3L8PZsaZqHvRUut&hl=en" width="640" height="480"></iframe></div>Data showed that during the last five years, all six wells combined 
were consistently pumping about 9,000 barrels of wastewater a day. 
That’s a relatively small quantity compared to what regulators found 
around the spike of earthquakes in Harper and Sumner Counties in 2015 
and 2016. There, regulators found groups of dozens of wells each pumping
 as much as 15,000 barrels of wastewater a day.In the case of 
Harper and Sumner counties, earthquake experts were able to clearly see 
that the number of earthquakes mirrored almost exactly the rise and fall
 of how much wastewater was being injected.“What we saw there 
was nothing like what we see in Sedgwick County in terms of the large 
number of injection wells that were disposing of large volumes,” Hoffman
 said.Ultimately, state regulators determined that the six wells
 investigated near Wichita did not contribute to the recent string of 
earthquakes. But the state’s investigation concluded before the largest 
of the earthquakes had even hit.While the state still doesn’t 
suspect oil and gas operations played a role, it has decided to expand 
its investigation beyond what’s required in the state’s seismic action 
plan. It’s now gathering data from all wastewater injection wells within
 a 15-mile radius.Miller, the expert from the Kansas Geological 
Survey, said he’s in favor of expanding the investigation. He said the 
geology of the area is complicated, and a large underground ridge nearby
 could be directing the pressure created from the wastewater pumping in 
unexpected directions.“We don’t know that’s what’s going on,” he
 said. “We’re not suggesting it is going on, but we want to look at all 
possibilities.”Hoffman said he doesn’t think the state’s seismic action plan needs to be changed or expanded officially.He
 also says he doesn’t expect to find anything in the expanded 
investigation, but in a state with a history of links between oil and 
gas operations and earthquakes, it’s worth having more data than less.“If there was something that caused those earthquakes,” Hoffman said, “we want to be able to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”Brian

Regulators expand investigation into Wichita earthquakes

JEWELL COUNTY -- A small earthquake struck in Jewell County Wednesday night.

According to the Kansas Geological Survey, a 3.0 magnitude quake struck at 11:05 p.m. Wednesday south-southeast of Esbon. The quake was centered north of K Road and east of 70 Road in the west central part of Jewell County.

3.0 quake strikes in Jewell County Wednesday night

Minor earthquakes struck two area counties Monday.

The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) reported that a magnitude 2 quake struck eastern Marion County at 5:07 a.m. Monday. The quake was centered approximately seven miles east-northeast of Lincolnville, just east of Clover Road between 290th Street and 300 Street, KGS noted.

Additionally, a 2.5 magnitude quake was reported at 6:45 p.m. Monday in Jewell County. According to KGS, the quake was centered slightly more than two miles west of Jewell, just south of H Road.

Strongest earthquake in 5 years shakes Wichita

At 4:19a.m. Monday, a quake with a magnitude 2.7 woke residents just east of north Greenwich Road and 13th, according to the Kansas Geological Survey. This follows over a dozen small quakes in Sedgwick County since Thanksgiving Day including 3.7 magnitude quake on December 19.

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Multiple earthquakes rattled Wichita on over the weekend, with the largest at 12:47p.m. measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was centered near 13th and Greenwich where around a dozen temblers had been reported since Thanksgiving Day.&nbsp;

That makes the trembler the largest on record in the city in the last five years, although its still is considered relatively small. The threshold for damage usually starts at 4.0. 

The USGS reported at least six other quakes happened Saturday and another early Sunday in Wichita including a 3.4 magnitude quake centered near Bellaire just before 1p.m. Saturday.&nbsp;

The first quake, just after 11:30a.m., was centered northeast of Eastborough and measured a magnitude 2.6, according to the USGS. Three additional quakes were also centered in Eastborough including a temblors that measured 2.7, 3.5 just before 1p.m. and 2.5 quake at 1:18p.m., according to the U.S.

In addition, the USGS reported a 3.4 magnitude quake centered near Bellaire just before 1p.m.&nbsp;

The region has experienced ten or more earthquakes of 2.0 magnitude or more since Thanksgiving Day including a 2.8 magnitude quake December 14 and a 3.3 quake Dec. 3.&nbsp; No damage or injuries were reported.&nbsp;

Another small earthquake reported in Wichita

TOPEKA – The Kansas Corporation Commission has completed an investigation into whether the recent string of earthquakes occurring in the Wichita area are related to oil and gas industry activity. The KCC regulates oil and gas production and exploration in the state.

“Based on our investigation, KCC staff does not believe the seismicity in Wichita, Kansas is tied to any oil and gas activities in the area,” said Ryan A. Hoffman, Director of the KCC Conservation Division.

The KCC’s investigation examined many factors including:

· A review of historical disposal well records for Arbuckle or Granite Wash injection wells within a six-mile radius of the earthquakes. Five wells were located in the radius. No recent volume increases were found.

· Any new drilling activity within three miles of the epicenters. No new wells were recently completed within the area.

· Spot checks of the wells within the radius area to verify compliance with permit conditions.

This investigation procedure is outlined in the Seismic Action Plan developed in 2014 in collaboration with the Kansas Geological Survey and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. An investigation is triggered whenever an earthquake of M 3.5 or higher occurs in the state or when an earthquake scores a 17 or higher Seismic Action Score which takes into account variables such as risk, clustering and timing.

The KCC will continue to monitor the situation and consult with the Kansas Geological Survey and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment as necessary.

Three additional quakes were also centered in Eastborough including a temblors that measured 2.7, 3.5 just before 1p.m. and 2.5 quake at 1:18p.m., according to the U.S.In addition, the USGS reported a 3.4 magnitude quake centered near Bellaire just before 1p.m.&nbsp;The region has experienced ten or more earthquakes of 2.0 magnitude or more since Thanksgiving Day including a 2.8 magnitude quake December 14 and a 3.3 quake Dec. 3.&nbsp; No damage or injuries were reported.&nbsp;--------

USGS: Small earthquakes continue in Wichita 

ASSARIA -- A minor earthquake shook part of southeastern Saline County east of Assaria early this morning.

A 2.4 magnitude quake struck at 2:59 a.m. Friday, according to the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS). The temblor was centered south of East Assaria Road nearly a half mile west of South Simpson Road, KGS reported.

SEDGWICK COUNTY —The U.S. Geological Survey says a pair of earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 2.7 rattled parts of Wichita on Thursday. The first occurred just after 2:30a.m. and the second just after 7:30a.m. and were centered northeast of Eastborough, according to the USGS.

These are the 6th and 7th earthquakes of 2.0 magnitude or more reported in the Wichita area in the last two weeks including a 2.7 magnitude quake Wednesday and a 3.3 quake Tuesday.&nbsp; No damage or injuries were reported.&nbsp;

2 more low-intensity earthquakes shake Wichita

SEDGWICK COUNTY —The Kansas Geological Survey says an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 2.6 rattled parts of Wichita just before 9a.m. Wednesday.

It is the fifth earthquake of 2.0 magnitude or more reported in the Wichita area in the last two weeks.&nbsp; No serious damage or injuries were reported after Tuesday's 3.3 magnitude quake.&nbsp;

The U.S. Geological Survey said Tuesday's quake hit in east Wichita, about 1.86 miles northeast of Eastborough&nbsp;near 21st and Rock Road.&nbsp; The Wednesday quake was centered just south of that location.

Other earthquakes were reported in the Wichita area on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27 and Nov. 30.
