Kansas Wesleyan volleyball coach <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/673f6790-ac03-4a50-9503-3339ee586691?elinkdata=21313">Dustin Sahlmann</a> was looking for an opportunity to give his younger players a chance to show what they can do.

He chose the non-conference match against Central Christian on Friday night as the time to do it and was not disappointed. After a sluggish start KWU rolled the rest of the way enroute to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-10, 25-15) victory inside Mabee Arena.

With the regulars cheering on their teammates from the sidelines the youngsters showed plenty of ability.

"We're trying to get guys to all be on the same page and when you're dealing with an entire group of freshmen for the most part it's difficult when they don't get live action," Sahlmann said. "We were able to get those guys in a real situation and see how they responded."

Wesleyan improved to 6-7 on the season while Central Christian fell to 0-10.

The opening set was a challenge. Leading 19-17 the Tigers went on a 6-2 run and led 23-21 but KWU responded with the last four points - the final three with <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/5442fa23-0f7c-45ed-bc68-61d7d7fdc4d9?elinkdata=21313">Jeremy Lapeze</a> on the serve that included two aces.

Leading 5-4 in the second set the Coyotes took control outscoring the Tigers 20-6 the rest of the way - Lapeze on the serve for five of the first six points.

Clinging to a 7-6 lead in the third set, Wesleyan scored 12 of the next 16 points. The Tigers got no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

"There was a little more communication," Sahlmann said. "It took us getting on them a little bit in the first set, but I felt the communication level was better. We did a better job blocking than we've done in practice so that was pretty good. I moved a couple of guys around in sets two and three and it was good to see them respond."

Sahlmann said the biggest benefit from the match will manifest itself later.

"Practices will be even better and more competitive because the younger guys are getting more experience and getting those opportunities," he said. "I think it helps the entire program."

KWU hit at a .171 percentage and limited Central Christian to minus-.119 percent.

KWU MBV sweeps Central Christian

BRANSON, Mo. - Kansas Wesleyan Softball split its two games on Friday at the Branson Grand Slam Tournament. KWU lost to No. 9 ranked Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) 5-2 in the first game, then bounced back to defeat Doane 4-0 at the Branson RecPlex.

KWU softball splits games at Branson Grand Slam tournament

Few words can adequately describe what happened in the final two minutes of Friday’s sub-state boys championship game between Bennington and Ell-Saline.

Maybe it was a miracle, maybe it was an anomaly, maybe it was just good old-fashioned March Madness.

Down 10 with 1:50 remaining, completely dead in the water, the Ell-Saline boy's basketball team pulled off an unthinkable comeback, outscoring Bennington 14-3 in just 120 seconds to win 69-68 and punch the team's first ticket to the 2A state tournament in recent memory.

Brogan Rowley started the party with 1:38 to go, knocking down a tough jumper and sinking the and-one free throw to cut the lead to seven.

On the ensuing possession, Bennington threw the ball away, leading to a transition foul on Kas Kramer, who sunk both free throws to cut the lead to five.

Isaiah Garrett extended the edge by one with a free throw, but Rowley got right back to work with another old-fashioned three-point play to trim the advantage to three.

Needing to play the foul game, Ell-Saline once again sent Garrett to the line, and the veteran delivered for Bennington, sinking both free throws to give his team a five-point lead with 25 seconds to go.

On the very next possession, Trey Williams, who had been silenced for nearly 32 minutes, caught a pass on the perimeter and buried a three to get the Cards back within two.

With just 15 seconds on the clock, Bennington inbounded, but their pass out of a trap was deflected and Garrison Zerger took the carom straight to the cup to tie the game at 68-68 with 10 seconds remaining.

Not content to play for overtime, the Cardinals flocked to the ball once more and successfully wrestled the ball away from Garrett, but before they could take a potential game-winning shot, Coach Wendel called timeout to reset.

The designed play got the ball to Reese Krone, who appeared to be stripped of the ball with a fourth of a second remaining, but instead, a foul was called and Krone went to the line with a chance to be the hero.

As if any doubt of what might come next remained, Krone buried the first free throw for the lead, and purposefully left the second short, sealing Bennington’s fate, and completing the unlikeliest of comebacks.

Despite the loss, Isaiah Garrett (22) and Thayne Trout (16) were excellent for a heartbroken Bennington team that will end it’s season, and sub-state run, at 15-8.

Meanwhile, Ell-Saline was led to victory by Garrison Zerger (21) Reese Krone (18) and Brogan Rowley (15), avenging one of their only three losses on the year.

The Cardinals will enter the 2A state tournament at 20-3 overall and will have a chance to play for their first state title since 1980 next week at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan.

Cardiac Cards erase ten-point deficit in final two minutes to clinch 2A state tournament berth

The Abilene boy’s basketball team has become a mainstay at the 4A state tournament, and this year will be no different after the Cowboys defended their home floor in a 48-43 win over Wellington on Friday night.

This game was a rollercoaster from start to finish, but one the Cowboys would lead for most of its runtime in a near wire-to-wire victory.

After Wellington jumped out to a 4-0 lead, the Cowboys put on a clinic, outscoring the Crusaders 23-2 over the next 12 minutes to take a colossal 23-6 lead.

Just when it seemed the rout could be on, Wellington came alive, forcing three quick turnovers and rattling off a 9-0 run of their own courtesy of their star Carter Burnett.

On the ensuing possession, Burnett committed his fourth foul, and in frustration, ended his own night before the end of the first half, collecting a technical before being escorted back to the Wellington locker room.

Whatever momentum the Crusaders had built was swiftly crushed, and three free throws later the Cowboys led 26-15 at the break.

Down big without their star, many teams would have crumbled, but Wellington fought back, cutting the deficit to two possessions at the end of the third, and whittling the lead down to as few as three in the fourth.

The comeback, however, was not to be, as the Abilene steeled their nerves and pulled away late, thanks in no small part to seven straight free throw makes by Weston Rock.

Abilene holds off Wellington to punch ticket to 4A state tournament

The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association (KWCA) has announced the high school senior wrestlers who have accepted their invitation to wrestle in the 2nd annual KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals.&nbsp; The KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals will be held on Saturday, March 29th, 2025, at Fugate Gymnasium on the campus of Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. Gates open at 1:00 pm and the opening ceremony will begin at 2:00 pm. The KWCA and the Shrine Bowl of Kansas, Inc worked together to create the Kansas Shrine Duals in 2024 as a senior all-star wrestling event for a cause. All net proceeds from the KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals benefit Shriners Children’s. The inaugural event in 2024 raised $25,000 for Shriners Children’s.

The Shrine Bowl of Kansas, Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity that produces annual events and related activities, with net proceeds benefiting Shriners Children’s. Shriners Children’s is a world-renowned healthcare system with hospitals, outpatient clinics, ambulatory care centers and outreach locations across North America, dedicated to improving the lives of children every day by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association (KWCA) has announced the high school senior wrestlers who have accepted their invitation to wrestle in the 2nd annual KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals.&nbsp; The KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals will be held on Saturday, March 29th, 2025, at Fugate Gymnasium on the campus of Newman University in Wichita, Kansas. Gates open at 1:00 pm and the opening ceremony will begin at 2:00 pm. 2025 KWCA Kansas Shrine Duals Rosters Announced

Kansas Hosts No. 24 Arizona Saturday on Senior Night

KANSAS CITY, Mo.&nbsp;– K-State, the five-seed, used a hot first half shooting effort from the field to take a double-digit lead, but four-seed West Virginia came back to secure a 73-69 win in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship at T-Mobile Center on Friday.

K-State (26-7) was led by a trio of seniors: Kennedy Taylor, Temira Poindexter and Serena Sundell. Taylor carded a personal season-high 21 points on a perfect 9-of-9 shooting and added three rebounds. Taylor is the first player in Big 12 Championship history to go perfect from the field on nine or more field goal attempts.

Poindexter notched 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including a 3-of-5 effort from long range and added six rebounds.

Sundell finished with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and nine assists. With her nine assists on Friday, the All-Big 12 First Team selection set the school record for assists in a season with 233, breaking the previous mark of 229 held by Shalee Lehning from the 2008-09 season.

- K-State raced out of the gates and captured the first quarter, 33-23. The 33 points set the school record for points in any quarter in a Big 12 Championship game and tied the Big 12 record for points in a quarter, equaling the mark set by Baylor on March 12, 2021.

- The Wildcats shot a blistering 86.7 percent (13-of-15) from the field in the opening frame. The 86.7 percent effort is the second-highest field goal percentage in a quarter in program history, trailing the 90.0 percent performance in the second quarter against UIW on Dec. 3, 2019.

- Both teams settled into the game in the second quarter, as K-State would build a 12-point lead, 42-30, with 4:11 to play in the second stanza after Taryn Sides knocked down her second 3-pointer of the game. West Virginia (23-6) would win the frame, 13-11, outscoring the Wildcats 6-2 in the final four minutes.

- The Mountaineers took their first lead since the early moments of the first quarter with a Jordan Harrison layup with 1:10 to play. K-State answered with a Taylor layup with 33 seconds left for a 55-54 lead.

- After Harrison made two free throws with five seconds left to give West Virginia a 56-55 lead, the Wildcats found Poindexter for a last second 3-pointer, which she banked in to give K-State a 58-56 advantage entering the fourth quarter.

- West Virginia took its largest lead of the day, 66-60, following a pair of free throws with 4:28 to play. The Wildcats went without a made field goal for the first five and a half minutes of the fourth quarter (0-of-5). K-State would shoot 27.3 percent (3-of-11) in the final quarter.

- Sundell broke through with a layup with 4:14 to play and Poindexter cashed in a 3-pointer to bring the Wildcats to within one, 67-66. Taylor would push the Wildcats into a two-point lead, 69-67, with 1:53 left.

- The Mountaineers would use a 6-0 run to close out the game, taking the lead for good, 71-69, with 43 seconds to play on a JJ Quinerly runner in the lane.

- K-State ended the game shooting 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the field, including 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from beyond the arc.

- West Virginia leads the series with K-State, 9-20. Head coach Jeff Mittie is 9-23 in his career against West Virginia.

It has been a roller coaster of a Big 12 season for K-State, which has had a 6-game losing streak followed by a 6-game winning streak followed by a 4-game losing streak followed by a current 2-game winning streak. The Wildcats got some good news in Wednesday’s win at Cincinnati, as senior Coleman Hawkins played nearly 34 minutes in his return to the court after missing 2 games.&nbsp;

Senior David N’Guessan continued his strong play in Wednesday’s 54-49 win at Cincinnati with his team-leading sixth double-double of the season (and ninth overall) with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. N’Guessan led or was tied for the team lead in 5 different categories, including points, rebounds, assists (4), steals (2) and blocks (1). He scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half in helping the Wildcats overcome a halftime deficit for the first time this season.

The stifling defensive effort helped snap a 3-game road skid while sweeping the regular-season series from the Bearcats. The Ellsworth girl’s basketball team got off to a strong start in their sub-state semifinal on Thursday but fizzled out in the second half as their season came to an end 45-26 at the hands of Goodland.

Both defenses came to play early, but it was Ellsworth who held a 9-5 edge at the end of the first quarter.

Each team managed to get their offense going in the second, but despite four different Cowgirls scoring, the Lady Bearcats still led 15-14 at the halftime intermission.

Ellsworth was held without a bucket for the first four minutes of the third quarter, and managed just five points in the frame, as Goodland exploded off the line to take a 13-point lead.

The Lady Bearcats battled, but 13 second-half turnovers proved too much to overcome as Goodland pulled away to win by 19.

Just four members of the Ellsworth lineup managed to score, led by a 13-point performance by Lainey Peschka.

On the other side of the matchup, Goodland had two players in double figures, anchored by McKenna Schick (14) and Libby Cure (10) on a night where eight different Cowgirls would score.

For Ellsworth, a fantastic campaign comes to a close at 15-6.

Goodland, now 16-6, will travel to Scott City for a sub-state championship game with Colby on Saturday.

Slow second half dooms Lady Bearcats in sub-state semis

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;To kick off Women’s History Month, the Kansas City Chiefs hosted a Females in Flag Coaches Summit on Saturday, March 1, at Lee’s Summit West High School.

The event, held in partnership with RCX Sports Foundation, NFL Flag/Females in Flag and Gatorade, welcomed over 50 participants, including athletic directors, coaches and officials from Kansas and Missouri. The Chiefs are the first NFL team to host this coaching series, a new, all-inclusive clinic aimed at recruiting and training coaches while keeping all league participants updated on the best practices in Girls Flag Football. The clinic also introduced new educational components to further develop the sport.

“At the Chiefs, we are proud to support initiatives that empower women and girls in sports,” said Lara Krug, Kansas City Chiefs EVP and Chief Media and Marketing Officer. “This Females in Flag Coaches Summit is just one example of our commitment to creating more opportunities for female athletes and coaches. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it’s important to highlight the strides being made in Girls Flag Football, and we’re excited to continue championing this movement in our community.”

Currently, at least 65 NCAA schools sponsor Girls Flag Football at either the club or varsity levels, and the sport has been added to the Los Angles 2028 Olympics. In the Midwestern region, 14 collegiate teams are already offering Girls Flag Football through NAIA, NJCAA and NCCAA programs. Additionally, this spring, Missouri will have 30 high schools participating in the Girls Flag Football league, which kicks off on March 28 and runs through May 10. The Girls Flag Football league in Kansas will take place in the fall, with 16 schools currently registered to play. Kansas schools can sign-up for the Fall 2025 season until June 1.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;To kick off Women’s History Month, the Kansas City Chiefs hosted a Females in Flag Coaches Summit on Saturday, March 1, at Lee’s Summit West High School.The event, held in partnership with RCX Sports Foundation, NFL Flag/Females in Flag and Gatorade, welcomed over 50 participants, including athletic directors, coaches and officials from Kansas and Missouri. The Chiefs are the first NFL team to host this coaching series, a new, all-inclusive clinic aimed at recruiting and training coaches while keeping all league participants updated on the best practices in Girls Flag Football. The clinic also introduced new educational components to further develop the sport.“At the Chiefs, we are proud to support initiatives that empower women and girls in sports,” said Lara Krug, Kansas City Chiefs EVP and Chief Media and Marketing Officer. “This Females in Flag Coaches Summit is just one example of our commitment to creating more opportunities for female athletes and coaches. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it’s important to highlight the strides being made in Girls Flag Football, and we’re excited to continue championing this movement in our community.”Currently, at least 65 NCAA schools sponsor Girls Flag Football at either the club or varsity levels, and the sport has been added to the Los Angles 2028 Olympics. In the Midwestern region, 14 collegiate teams are already offering Girls Flag Football through NAIA, NJCAA and NCCAA programs. Additionally, this spring, Missouri will have 30 high schools participating in the Girls Flag Football league, which kicks off on March 28 and runs through May 10. The Girls Flag Football league in Kansas will take place in the fall, with 16 schools currently registered to play. Kansas schools can sign-up for the Fall 2025 season until June 1.

Chiefs host females in flag football coaches summit for women's history month

In a year of state runs and titles, the Southeast of Saline wrestling team added more hardware to the Trojan trophy case over the weekend, with not one, but two individuals claiming the crown in their respective weight class.

Freshman Roman Tuttle (120) and junior Brody Chambers (285) each closed out fantastic campaigns with a first-place finish, while junior Killian Vaughan (165) and sophomore Annabelle Soell (140) took fourth and fifth on the podium respectively.

“The four wrestlers we qualified for state are hammers,” SES head wrestling coach Chuck Schremmer said. “They don’t want to lose, they don’t like to lose and I hope we can get them to make the rest of our team a little more like them.”

For this year’s Trojan team, the turning point came early, with a challenging cross-class meet at Newton.

In that tournament, Roman Tuttle would suffer a frustrating loss, but one that would set the tone for the rest of his near-perfect season.

“Coming in, you hear about the year Roman had and his win in the Super 32s in Kansas City and you think a kid like that could do well,” Schremmer said. “After he lost at Newton I don’t think he ever wanted to lose again.”

Wanting to win every match for the rest of the season is one thing, but doing it is quite another. Despite the odds, Tuttle did just that, closing out his freshman campaign with a 43-1 record, including a dominant 13-2 walloping of the two-time defending champ on his way to a state title of his own.

While Tuttle was, in many ways, the surprise of the tournament, Brody Chambers was anything but.

“In many ways, this felt like a state championship or bust year for Brody,” Schremmer said. “He won a huge match at that Newton tournament and I think that opened him to the idea that he could compete with the upper-echelon guys. As soon as he realized that he never looked back.”

After his sixth-place finish a season ago, Chambers climbed the 285 ladder to claim a state title by the slimmest of margins.

In the closing seconds of the title-deciding match, Chambers found himself down by a point in a bad position but managed to earn an escape in the closing seconds to pull ahead and claim the victory.

“Last year if someone got on Brody and put a power-half on him there were a few times where he’d roll over but he really grew and he was a lot tougher on bottom than he was last year,” he said. “He got his escapes when he could this year and that’s what ultimately allowed him to win state.”

He knew who he’d be wrestling for third and fourth and even though he missed it last year he expected to be there.”On the girl’s side, Annabelle Soell finished her 35-12 season strong with a fifth-place finish.“Anabelle took a lot of losses this year but she wrestled a lot of strong girls and she didn’t lose to anyone at or below her caliber,” he said. “She had a tough semifinal match and a break didn’t go her way but she fought back.”While the hardware is nice, this result also shows the strength of Southeast’s wrestling program, something Coach Schremmer and his team have built piece by piece over the last several years.“We took 13 boys to regionals this year, there have been years where I haven’t had 13 kids on my team,” he said. “We’re losing three seniors and we’re going to be gaining close to five eighth graders so the program is in a good place right now.”As for the four wrestlers who went to state, SES will return all four for next year’s campaign, giving Chambers and Tuttle an opportunity to defend their crowns from a hungry group of challengers.“This put a big target on these kids for last year but to be honest, they’re okay with that and I like that,” Schremmer said. “Everybody’s going to want a shot at these guys next year to see how good they can be and that’s going to make things hard for them next season but I know they’ll be up to the challenge.”
