This year’s presidential campaign has featured shocking statements and dramatic moments, including two assassination attempts. More recently, former President Trump made alarming comments about “enemies within” that hint at the use of military force against his political opponents, while Vice President Harris is struggling with a reticence among men of color to vote for her. Despite all this, the election itself may come down to a far more traditional, pocketbook issue.

A&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bankrate.com/personal-finance/2024-election-and-the-economy-survey/?tpt=a">new Bankrate survey</a>&nbsp;shows that 41% of Americans are concerned about inflation.&nbsp; More generally,&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/651719/economy-important-issue-2024-presidential-vote.aspx">Gallup</a>&nbsp;finds that the economy is the top issue this year, with 52% of voters calling it “extremely important.”&nbsp;

Inflation&nbsp;<a href="https://www.stlouisfed.org/publications/page-one-economics/2023/08/25/the-rise-and-fall-of-inflation-during-the-early-2020s#:~:text=Economists%20suggested%20both%20supply%20and,and%20higher%20over%20this%20period.&amp;text=See%2C%20for%20example%2C%20the%20San,and%20continued%20acceleration%20in%20inflation.">surged after the covid pandemic</a>&nbsp;due a variety of factors including clogged supply chains, worker shortages, and pent-up consumer demand.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://mitsloan.mit.edu/ideas-made-to-matter/federal-spending-was-responsible-2022-spike-inflation-research-shows">One study by MIT researchers</a>&nbsp;found that federal spending was the biggest driver.&nbsp; This included stimulus checks and support for state governments. That spending also had positive effects, likely averting a recession and possibly even a depression.&nbsp; After their spike, inflation rates today are&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bankrate.com/banking/federal-reserve/latest-inflation-statistics/?tpt=a">back down to 2.4% annually,</a>&nbsp;a level last seen in February 2021.&nbsp; Most economists attribute this control primarily to the Federal Reserve’s policy of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.clevelandfed.org/center-for-inflation-research/inflation-101/why-does-the-fed-care-start">raising interest rates</a>.&nbsp; So, why are voters still upset?

First is the fact that controlling interest rates does not return prices to pre-inflationary levels.&nbsp; Instead, Fed policy has slowed the&nbsp;increase&nbsp;in prices, causing them to stabilize at a point that is 21.4% more expensive than before February 2020.&nbsp; The last time Americans experienced high inflation was in the 1970s. Many older Americans have forgotten, while many younger Americans were not around to experience it.&nbsp; Should the Fed keep going and fight inflation even harder– perhaps even starting a cycle of deflation?&nbsp; If they did, the result could be traumatic.&nbsp; When the Fed finally&nbsp;<a href="https://www.federalreservehistory.org/essays/great-inflation">brought inflation to heel in the early 1980s</a>, interest rates were far higher than they are now, unemployment was in the double digits, and the<a href="https://www.iowapbs.org/iowapathways/mypath/2422/farm-crisis-1980s">&nbsp;farm economy was absolutely devastated</a>.&nbsp; By contrast,<a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LNS14000024">&nbsp;today’s unemployment rates</a>&nbsp;are historically low.

Americans are also, specifically concerned about housing.&nbsp; Post-pandemic&nbsp;<a href="https://www.goldmansachs.com/insights/articles/us-house-prices-are-forecast-to-rise-more-than-4-percent-next-year">demand for housing is surging</a>, but supply is not keeping up. Loosening up building restrictions and zoning codes seem like good answers, but the American system of government throws up a roadblock:&nbsp; state laws– including here in Kansas– delegate most of these regulations to local governments, creating a patchwork of codes and zoning laws that builders and rehabbers must navigate in order to create and rehabilitate more housing.&nbsp; The recent&nbsp;<a href="https://johnsoncountypost.com/2023/10/05/prairie-village-housing-timeline-214778/">rejection of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in Prairie Village</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kshb.com/news/local-news/lenexa-city-council-votes-down-controversial-proposal-for-homeless-shelter-in-city">denial of rezoning for a homeless shelter in Lenexa</a>, are both examples of the Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) politics that keeps housing choices limited.&nbsp; In addition, when developers do move in, they often prefer to build upscale apartments or large, single-family units in exclusive neighborhoods where the profit margin is greatest, doing little to relieve the shortage of&nbsp;affordable&nbsp;homes.&nbsp; The&nbsp;<a href="https://immigrationforum.org/article/immigrant-construction-workers-in-the-united-states/">current anti-immigration political climate also contributes to the problem</a>&nbsp;by threatening to limit the number of workers in the construction industry.&nbsp; If Trump is elected and proceeds with plans for mass deportations, the problem will only worsen.&nbsp; Of course, immigrants need homes, too, but research shows that they contribute far more to&nbsp;lowering&nbsp;the cost of housing by working in construction, than they contribute to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/jd-vance-debate-immigration-housing-prices-real-estate-federal-reserve/#:~:text=Still%2C%20there%20is%20some%20evidence,but%20although%20a%20small%20one.">raising it through increased demand.</a>&nbsp;

Inflation is a tough problem.&nbsp; Prices are not going back to pre-pandemic levels–the cost of doing so is simply too high.&nbsp; Popular policies like exclusive NIMBY zoning and anti-immigration legislation make the problem worse.&nbsp; Having been confronted with high inflation for the first time since the early 1980s, Americans are now re-learning what to do–and what not to do–in response.&nbsp;

INSIGHT KANSAS: What is Really Going On With Inflation?

A vehicle pursuit in the northeast part of Salina took place on Thursday afternoon and Salina Police Department (SPD) officers are still searching for the suspect.

According to SPD Cpt. Mike Miller, the pursuit began when a blue or purple Mitsubishi Lancer was observed running a stop sign near the intersection of Elm and Oakdale streets, near Riverside Park, at around 1:15 p.m.

 The suspect, described as a male between the ages of 20 and 25, led officers on a low-speed chase through the neighborhood, with speeds topping out at 40 miles per hour. The driver ran multiple stop signs before pulling into a driveway in the 300 block of North Columbia Avenue.

"The subject ended up bailing out of the car while pulling into a driveway in the 300 block of North Columbia Avenue, leaving the car in gear, causing the car to crash into a garage, through a door, and hit a car in a garage," Miller said.

SPD estimates the damage to the garage and vehicle to be around $1,500.

Officers quickly established a perimeter and notified Lakewood Middle School about the suspect's unapprehended status.

According to Salina Public School Communications Director Jennifer Camien, Lakewood Middle School monitored building entry and did not allow students outside the building yesterday while police were searching for an individual in the surrounding neighborhood. Normal learning activities continued during this time and throughout the day.

Despite efforts to locate the suspect, including reviewing video footage from an SPD patrol car, the individual has not yet been arrested.

SPD has submitted an affidavit requesting charges, including felony fleeing and eluding, felony interference, felony criminal damage to property, and multiple traffic violations.

The vehicle involved was unregistered, and officers noted that the car’s license plate also did not match any registered owner.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Oct. 19

By SALINA POST Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.3% in September. This is unchanged from 3.3% in August and an increase from 2.6% in September 2023, according to a media release from the Kansas Department of Labor.

“The Kansas unemployment rate held steady at 3.3% in September,” said labor economist, Emilie Doerksen. “The labor force participation rate was also unchanged over the month at 66.2%, significantly higher than the U.S. rate of 62.7%.”

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 2,700 from August. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs increased by 800 over the month, mwhile government increased by 1,900.

The unemployment rate in Saline County dropped from 3.5 percent in August to 2.8 percent.&nbsp; The rate in Dickinson County dropped from 6 percent 3.1 percent.

Since September 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 19,200. This change is due to an

increase of 16,500 private sector jobs and an increase of 2,700 government jobs.

Passengers will once again embark on a festive journey to the pumpkin patch located along the Abilene Smoky Valley Railroad (ASVR) right of way between Jeep Road and the Smoky Hill River, where they can deboard the train and search for their very own Great Pumpkin.

Trains will depart from the Rock Island Depot at 11:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19-20 and October 26-27.

Project manager Amy Boelling announced that before boarding the train, visitors can enjoy various activities in Old Abilene Town, including a psychiatric reading at Lucy’s booth, a coloring contest, and other fun surprises. This year's event promises a memorable experience for all ages.

The Great Pumpkin Patch Express was first introduced last year and saw over 1,600 participants enjoying the ride and the pumpkin hunt.

This event is a celebration of CKMHC’s 60th anniversary, recognizing six decades of providing essential behavioral health services to our communities.

The Community Block Party promises a day of fun, connection, and support for all ages and families and will feature several community partners and a resource fair with information on mental health, addiction treatment, healthcare, and other services available in the region.

By bringing together community members, families, and service providers in a fun and welcoming atmosphere, CKMHC seeks to encourage open conversations that break down the stigma surrounding behavioral health while raising awareness of the resources and self-care practices that promote whole-person wellness.

Kansas Wesleyan University is set to host homecoming this weekend, Oct. 18-20, with a slate of events scheduled to unite alumni, students, and the community and unveil the newly renovated Sams Chapel during the “Come Home” concert on Saturday, Oct. 19.

On Saturday, Oct. 19, the Jerry Jones Athletic Hall of Fame Induction and Alumni Awards ceremony will take place at 8 a.m. in Muir Gym. A series of tailgate-style gatherings will precede the 1 p.m. football game between Kansas Wesleyan and Avila University at Graves Family Sports Complex. During halftime, the university will recognize the Alumni Award winners, Hall of Fame inductees, and the Golden and Purple W recipients.

The "Come Home" concert will take place at 7 p.m. in Sams Chapel, marking the first event in the newly renovated space. The concert will be followed by fireworks over Pioneer Hall at approximately 9:15 p.m., with an alumni and friends social set to follow at The Library Sports Bar and Grill.

Homecoming 2024 will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 20, with a worship service at 10:30 a.m. at University United Methodist Church. The university’s Theatre Department will present a final performance of Kodachrome at 2 p.m. in Fitzpatrick Auditorium.

Wheat Scoop: Recipe book celebrates legacy of Davis and Patton

Federal money is finding its way to American Vietnam veterans who were harmed by Agent Orange exposure in the nearly 50 years since the war ended.

Now the Vietnam Veterans of America is out to ramp up pressure to compensate affected descendants of those soldiers who fought in Southeast Asia.

The Salina-based VVA Chapter 809 is planning a Veterans Town Hall Meeting from 9 to noon Oct. 19 at The Temple,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.google.com/maps/search/336+S,.+Santa+Fe?entry=gmail&amp;source=g">336 S,. Santa Fe</a>, in downtown Salina, to encourage reporting of suspected effects passed on from Agent Orange.

The keynote speaker is Maynard Kaderlik, 77, Vietnam veteran from Montgomery, MI. He and his brother Les Kaderlik, 78, also a Vietnam vet, both have dealt with cancer. There is no other cancer in their family histories, Maynard said.

But he has a son with a severe learning disability and two autistic granddaughters.

“That’s what really got me going on Agent Orange,” he said.

Maynard, who will speak only for himself in Salina, and not as a representative of any organizations, is hoping all service groups will get onboard. He said these effects are spreading through the generations of veterans.

“The children are our future,” he said. “When it came home to roost in my family, that’s when I decided I needed to fight this fight.”

One way is to keep pressure on the federal government, Kaderlik said, and influence the Veterans Administration to commit help.

“The effects of Agent Orange can indeed be passed on through the genes,” wrote Sammy L. Davis, a Vietnam veteran and Medal of Honor recipient, in a Feb. 27 email response to questions.

“I tell everyone to go get checked and make sure it’s not affecting you or your family,” he added.

The “tactical herbicide” used by the U.S. military to control vegetation during the war, has been proven to cause cancer and many other medical issues from those who were exposed.

After “a long fight,” the Veterans Administration relented, said Jim Deister, former Salina VVA chapter president.

“The government said there was no proof that Agent Orange caused any of the problems that veterans were complaining about,” Deister said. “But when vets would meet at reunions, etc., and discussed their problems, things seemed to be similar. At the same time, farmers were developing cancers from the use of herbicides like RoundUp, which has many of the same ingredients as Agent Orange. Between the veterans and farmers — numbers which could not be denied — the government was forced to study it.”

If a Vietnam vet served “where Agent Orange was prevalent, and has an issue identified as one that is caused by Agent Orange, they are automatically eligible for compensation,” Deister said.

“The situation is that there are indications that Agent Orange and other toxic exposures affect not only the veterans, but their offspring,” he said, including Vietnam veterans’ children and grandchildren.

But national VVA representatives who visited the Denver Regional VA office determined the filing of claims and the care and treatment of the descendants, were lacking, he said, sharing information from Sandra Wilson, who chairs the VVA’s Agent Orange &amp; Toxic Exposures Committee.

“What they found is that the VA acknowledges fewer applications than what the VVA records show there should be,” Deister said.

Wilson backed that up in a column she wrote in the November/December issue of The VVA Veteran Magazine.

“We must provide records to substantiate our concerns about the health impact on our offspring. Data outside the VA suggest that our 200 health problems may result&nbsp;from toxic exposure to changing in DNA,” Wilson wrote. “Some of our children are not 50 years old, and many have remained silent about their problems, This silence needs to end. It is crucial for families and future generations that we urge the government to acknowledge and address these issues.”

More research is needed, said Doug Randolph, president of Salina VVA Chapter 809, agreeing there is enough anecdotal evidence to suggest there might be a genetic connection to Agent Orange and other toxins from the Vietnam War.

“You have to have some medical people who can verify what’s going on,” he said.

Armed with “the generation of demand through numbers,” Wilson wrote, “we can persuade authorities to conduct proper research and provide care.”

All are welcome to attend the Oct.19 Town Hall gathering. Registration of those affected by toxic exposure — from Agent Orange, burn pit exposure or other sources — will be taken, along with reports of birth defects in offspring.

The next VVA Town Hall is aimed at expanding awareness on the Agent Orange issue that continues to grow as victims report their experiences.

Children of vets with toxic military exposures have higher rates of birth defects and disabilities, according to the National Birth Defect Registry.

Birth Defect Research for Children has worked with Vietnam veterans’ families since 1986 when the first Agent Orange Class Assistance Programs were funded, according to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://birthdefects.org/">birthdefects.org</a>.

 </figure>By TIM UNRUHFederal money is finding its way to American Vietnam veterans who were harmed by Agent Orange exposure in the nearly 50 years since the war ended.Now the Vietnam Veterans of America is out to ramp up pressure to compensate affected descendants of those soldiers who fought in Southeast Asia.The Salina-based VVA Chapter 809 is planning a Veterans Town Hall Meeting from 9 to noon Oct. 19 at The Temple,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.google.com/maps/search/336+S,.+Santa+Fe?entry=gmail&amp;source=g">336 S,. Santa Fe</a>, in downtown Salina, to encourage reporting of suspected effects passed on from Agent Orange.The keynote speaker is Maynard Kaderlik, 77, Vietnam veteran from Montgomery, MI. He and his brother Les Kaderlik, 78, also a Vietnam vet, both have dealt with cancer. There is no other cancer in their family histories, Maynard said.But he has a son with a severe learning disability and two autistic granddaughters.“That’s what really got me going on Agent Orange,” he said.Maynard, who will speak only for himself in Salina, and not as a representative of any organizations, is hoping all service groups will get onboard. He said these effects are spreading through the generations of veterans.“The children are our future,” he said. “When it came home to roost in my family, that’s when I decided I needed to fight this fight.”One way is to keep pressure on the federal government, Kaderlik said, and influence the Veterans Administration to commit help.“The effects of Agent Orange can indeed be passed on through the genes,” wrote Sammy L. Davis, a Vietnam veteran and Medal of Honor recipient, in a Feb. 27 email response to questions.“I tell everyone to go get checked and make sure it’s not affecting you or your family,” he added.The “tactical herbicide” used by the U.S. military to control vegetation during the war, has been proven to cause cancer and many other medical issues from those who were exposed.After “a long fight,” the Veterans Administration relented, said Jim Deister, former Salina VVA chapter president.“The government said there was no proof that Agent Orange caused any of the problems that veterans were complaining about,” Deister said. “But when vets would meet at reunions, etc., and discussed their problems, things seemed to be similar. At the same time, farmers were developing cancers from the use of herbicides like RoundUp, which has many of the same ingredients as Agent Orange. Between the veterans and farmers — numbers which could not be denied — the government was forced to study it.”If a Vietnam vet served “where Agent Orange was prevalent, and has an issue identified as one that is caused by Agent Orange, they are automatically eligible for compensation,” Deister said.Now the issue has broadened.“The situation is that there are indications that Agent Orange and other toxic exposures affect not only the veterans, but their offspring,” he said, including Vietnam veterans’ children and grandchildren.But national VVA representatives who visited the Denver Regional VA office determined the filing of claims and the care and treatment of the descendants, were lacking, he said, sharing information from Sandra Wilson, who chairs the VVA’s Agent Orange &amp; Toxic Exposures Committee.“What they found is that the VA acknowledges fewer applications than what the VVA records show there should be,” Deister said.Wilson backed that up in a column she wrote in the November/December issue of The VVA Veteran Magazine.“We must provide records to substantiate our concerns about the health impact on our offspring. Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the first of which was delivered in 1941. The locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. 

Because of their great length, the frames of the Big Boys were "hinged," or articulated, to allow them to negotiate curves. They had a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, which meant they had four wheels on the leading set of "pilot" wheels which guided the engine, eight drivers, another set of eight drivers, and four wheels following which supported the rear of the locomotive. The massive engines normally operated between Ogden, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wyo.

There are seven Big Boys on public display in various cities around the country. They can be found in St. Louis, Missouri; Dallas, Texas; Omaha, Nebraska; Denver, Colorado; Scranton, Pennsylvania; Green Bay, Wisconsin; and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Big Boy No. 4014 was delivered to Union Pacific in December 1941. The locomotive was retired in December 1961, having traveled 1,031,205 miles in its 20 years in service.&nbsp;&nbsp;Union Pacific reacquired No. 4014 from the RailGiants Museum in Pomona, California, in 2013, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.up.com/up/heritage/steam/4014/4014-project/index.htm">relocated it back to Cheyenne</a>&nbsp;to begin a multi-year restoration process. It returned to service in May 2019 to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.up.com/up/heritage/steam-meet/index.htm">celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad's Completion</a>.

Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive is back in Salina

A T-bone collision at the intersection of I-70 and Niles Road in Saline County sent three people to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander, the crash, occurred around 4:42 p.m. on October 16, 2024, and involved a 2022 Nissan Titan pickup truck and a 2013 Ford Mustang, both driven by Kansas residents.

The 63-year-old driver of the Nissan Titan, a New Cambria resident, was traveling north on Niles Road when a 21-year-old man from Fort Riley, driving a Ford Mustang, exited I-70 westbound onto Niles Road. The 21-year-old driver had a female passenger from Salina with him at the time of the crash.&nbsp;

 According to witnesses, the Mustang slowed down at the stop sign but did not come to a complete stop before attempting to cross the intersection. As the Mustang entered the highway, the pickup truck collided with its side.&nbsp;

 The intersection has a posted speed limit of 55 mph, and it is believed the pickup was traveling at or near highway speeds at the time of the crash.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, and all three individuals were transported to the hospital. While the damage was substantial, the injuries sustained by those involved were reported as non-life-threatening.

The driver of the Mustang received citations for failing to yield at the intersection, failing to stop properly at the stop sign, and for not wearing a seatbelt.

Governor Laura Kelly announced today that the 2024 Kansas Economic Report shows growth in the state’s labor workforce, continued low unemployment, and record exports. The report, produced by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL), comprehensively analyzes the state’s economic health and labor market trends.

The annual publication highlights critical data on employment, unemployment, labor force participation, job growth, personal income, and more, providing an essential resource for businesses, policymakers, and job seekers.

Labor Force Growth:&nbsp;In 2023, Kansas saw a 0.6% increase in its labor force, adding 8,385 individuals and bringing the total labor force to over 1.51 million. The number of employed Kansans reached a record high of 1.47 million, reflecting the state’s resilience and ongoing recovery.

Unemployment Rates:&nbsp;Kansas maintained a low unemployment rate, rising slightly to 2.7% in 2023, still well below the national average of 3.6%. Despite the modest increase, Kansas continues to outperform the national labor market.

Job Market Rebounds:&nbsp;Kansas’ nonfarm jobs surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with a total of 1.44 million jobs in 2023. Private sector employment led this growth, adding 23,800 jobs, while the government sector added 3,700 jobs.

Industry and Occupational Projections:&nbsp;Healthcare, transportation, and computer-related occupations are expected to grow significantly through 2032. Occupations typically requiring a bachelor’s degree are expected to add the most jobs from 2022&nbsp;to&nbsp;2032.

Export Growth:&nbsp;Kansas’ export market hit a record of $14.1 billion in sales, driven by growth in the transportation equipment and processed foods sectors. However, exports to Kansas' top trade partners—Mexico, Canada, and Japan—have declined over the year.

“The growth we are seeing is encouraging and shows the progress made in revitalizing our state's economy,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly said. “This report reinforces my administration’s commitment to making Kansas the best state to live, work, and raise a family.”

The report, produced by the Labor Market Information Services division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL), comprehensively analyzes the state’s economic health and labor market trends.The annual publication highlights critical data on employment, unemployment, labor force participation, job growth, personal income, and more, providing an essential resource for businesses, policymakers, and job seekers.Labor Force Growth:&nbsp;In 2023, Kansas saw a 0.6% increase in its labor force, adding 8,385 individuals and bringing the total labor force to over 1.51 million. The number of employed Kansans reached a record high of 1.47 million, reflecting the state’s resilience and ongoing recovery. Unemployment Rates:&nbsp;Kansas maintained a low unemployment rate, rising slightly to 2.7% in 2023, still well below the national average of 3.6%. Despite the modest increase, Kansas continues to outperform the national labor market. Job Market Rebounds:&nbsp;Kansas’ nonfarm jobs surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with a total of 1.44 million jobs in 2023. Private sector employment led this growth, adding 23,800 jobs, while the government sector added 3,700 jobs.Industry and Occupational Projections:&nbsp;Healthcare, transportation, and computer-related occupations are expected to grow significantly through 2032. Occupations typically requiring a bachelor’s degree are expected to add the most jobs from 2022&nbsp;to&nbsp;2032. Export Growth:&nbsp;Kansas’ export market hit a record of $14.1 billion in sales, driven by growth in the transportation equipment and processed foods sectors.
