The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) is excited to announce that voting for the next Kansas personalized license plate design is now open. Starting today, Kansans can visit <a href="http://ksplates.kansas.gov">ksplates.kansas.gov</a> to select their favorite design. Voting will end at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, and the winning design will be announced on Monday, Aug. 12.

“We know how passionate Kansans are about license plates, and this initiative aims to give the public a direct say in selecting the next personalized plate design that will be featured on vehicles across the state for years to come,”&nbsp;said David Harper, Director of KDOR Division of Vehicles. “We look forward to seeing which design Kansans choose.”

The website offers five distinctive design options for Kansans to select from.

Voting on this round of personalized designs is different from the standard license plate designs Kansans voted on last December. To streamline the process and meet production deadlines, KDOR incorporated feedback from last year’s voting to inform aspects of these designs, including a Kansas outline, wheat, and sunflowers.

The winning design will replace the current “Powering the Future” personalized license plate design.

Residents may vote for their preferred design multiple times. Shortly after the voting concludes, the winning design will enter production and be available for purchase in 2025.

The voting website was made possible with help from the Information Network of Kansas. Kansans can cast their vote by visiting <a href="http://ksplates.kansas.gov">ksplates.kansas.gov</a>.

With the news on Friday that the national unemployment rate is up again to 4.3%, the highest since 2021, the ripples of that are being felt across the Midwest.&nbsp;

"We can say pretty safely that this U.S. economy and the Mid-American economy is slowing down fairly significantly," said Creighton University economist Ernie Goss prior to the release. "The manufacturing sector in Kansas is moving sideways to a bit down."

Goss previously has said that the rate of increasing debt in the federal government is not sustainable. It's also important to note that the government pays a higher rate on its debt when overall rates are higher.

"That is the big elephant there in the room, and that's the interest payments on the debt, which is now greater than the military budget," Goss said.&nbsp; "We're talking about over a trillion dollars spending for our own interest, and the rates are going to be elevated for some time."

The Federal Reserve plans to cut interest rates at its September meeting, and Goss believes they will do so a second time in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Governor Laura Kelly recently signed a proclamation recognizing August as “Kansas Breastfeeding Month,” highlighting the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of Kansans. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition have partnered in bringing awareness to the many benefits of breastfeeding.

“We are extremely pleased with Governor Kelly’s proclamation, which highlights the importance of breastfeeding support for families in Kansas,”&nbsp;Brenda Bandy, IBCLC, Executive Director of the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition (KBC), said.&nbsp;“This proclamation supports their decision and fosters a landscape of breastfeeding support in our state for the benefit of Kansas children and families.”&nbsp;

Over 90 percent of families in Kansas choose to breastfeed. Yet less than one in four Kansas infants are exclusively breastfed through the critical first six months of life. Lack of support and barriers in the workplace can often be obstacles for parents who choose to breastfeed.&nbsp;

“We know breastfeeding has many positive impacts,”&nbsp;Derik Flerlage, Director of KDHE Bureau of Family Health, said. “Strong statewide partnerships and community collaboration allow our programs to better serve the needs of Kansas families as they care for children during their critical first months.”

A large collaborative K-State 105 project is bringing together 12 partners — including Kansas State University units, other higher education institutions and health organizations — to help improve rural and agriculture-connected health across the state.

The Rural Ag Health Community Health Worker project focuses on sustaining the health and safety of rural Kansans and the agricultural workforce. The project is establishing resource and service hubs staffed by community health workers who are co-supervised by local K-State Research and Extension units and health care partners. The project has received funding and support through the K-State 105 initiative.

"Local extension units participating in the Rural Ag Health Community Health Worker project serve as a gateway to help rural residents manage chronic conditions, prevent injuries and reduce risk of illness," said Elaine Johannes, Kansas Health Foundation distinguished professor in community health and state extension specialist. "Extension units are known for providing education to promote and improve health; now, with the addition of community health workers, extension will be a resource and partner for local health care teams."

The community health worker project will involve work in 16 counties, including Allen, Bourbon, Clay, Cloud, Crawford, Jackson, Jefferson, Labette, Marshall, Montgomery, Nemaha, Neosho, Republic, Washington, Wilson and Woodson counties.

The K-State units involved in the project include five K-State Research and Extension units across the state, the College of Health and Human Sciences, the College of Agriculture and the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering.

The external and community partners include the University of Kansas Medical Center Communities Organizing to Promote Equity, or COPE; Unite Us, a technology company that focuses on social care delivery; the Kansas Community Health Worker Coalition with the Wichita State University Community Engagement Institute; Health Innovations Network of Kansas; and other local health care partners.

"K-State 105 is focused on bringing people and partners together for the good of Kansas, and that's exactly what this project is doing," said Jessica Gnad, K-State 105 director. "We're building an ecosystem of support to help address a key area — in this case, health care — that is affecting economic prosperity in Kansas."

The partners in the project are recruiting and hiring five community health workers who will be based in several K-State Research and Extension districts — including Wildcat, Southwind, Meadowlark and River Valley — as well as the K-State Research and Extension — Marshall County office. Members of KU COPE will help empower community health workers by providing their training and expertise to enhance the community health workers' ability to serve their communities. An aim is to share this model statewide to ensure consistent, high-quality and accessible health and social care services through an expanded community health workforce.

"When called upon, extension's community health workers can provide health coaching, client support, nonclinical services, care coordination and outreach activities with local health and care services," Johannes said. "Across the nation, community health workers' scope of work includes these services along with health education, supporting community health initiatives and being a liaison between providers and health care. Through this Rural Ag Health Community Health Worker project, we'll learn how extension can contribute to improved health care access for all."

K-State Research and Extension community health workers and their health care and service collaborators will use Unite Us' secure, closed-loop referral technology to connect clients to the care they need. Additionally, community health workers will gather information about prominent health issues and identify health disparities in the communities they serve, enabling more targeted and effective interventions.

"It is exciting to participate in this boots-on-the-ground project to identify if a model of employing community health workers is feasible and how they can make difference in the lives of Kansas families," said Susie Latta, K-State Research and Extension — Marshall County family and consumer sciences agent.

K-State 105 is Kansas State University's answer to the call for a comprehensive economic growth and advancement solution for Kansas. The initiative leverages the statewide K-State Research and Extension network to deliver the full breadth of the university's collective knowledge and solution-driven innovation to every Kansan, right where they live and work. Additionally, K-State 105 forges the connections and partnerships that create access to additional expertise within other state institutions and agencies, nonprofits and organizations — all part of an effort to build additional capacities and strengths in each of the 105 counties in the state.

The project has received funding and support through the K-State 105 initiative."Local extension units participating in the Rural Ag Health Community Health Worker project serve as a gateway to help rural residents manage chronic conditions, prevent injuries and reduce risk of illness," said Elaine Johannes, Kansas Health Foundation distinguished professor in community health and state extension specialist. "Extension units are known for providing education to promote and improve health; now, with the addition of community health workers, extension will be a resource and partner for local health care teams."The community health worker project will involve work in 16 counties, including Allen, Bourbon, Clay, Cloud, Crawford, Jackson, Jefferson, Labette, Marshall, Montgomery, Nemaha, Neosho, Republic, Washington, Wilson and Woodson counties.The K-State units involved in the project include five K-State Research and Extension units across the state, the College of Health and Human Sciences, the College of Agriculture and the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering.The external and community partners include the University of Kansas Medical Center Communities Organizing to Promote Equity, or COPE; Unite Us, a technology company that focuses on social care delivery; the Kansas Community Health Worker Coalition with the Wichita State University Community Engagement Institute; Health Innovations Network of Kansas; and other local health care partners."K-State 105 is focused on bringing people and partners together for the good of Kansas, and that's exactly what this project is doing," said Jessica Gnad, K-State 105 director. "We're building an ecosystem of support to help address a key area — in this case, health care — that is affecting economic prosperity in Kansas."The partners in the project are recruiting and hiring five community health workers who will be based in several K-State Research and Extension districts — including Wildcat, Southwind, Meadowlark and River Valley — as well as the K-State Research and Extension — Marshall County office. Members of KU COPE will help empower community health workers by providing their training and expertise to enhance the community health workers' ability to serve their communities. An aim is to share this model statewide to ensure consistent, high-quality and accessible health and social care services through an expanded community health workforce."When called upon, extension's community health workers can provide health coaching, client support, nonclinical services, care coordination and outreach activities with local health and care services," Johannes said. "Across the nation, community health workers' scope of work includes these services along with health education, supporting community health initiatives and being a liaison between providers and health care. Through this Rural Ag Health Community Health Worker project, we'll learn how extension can contribute to improved health care access for all."K-State Research and Extension community health workers and their health care and service collaborators will use Unite Us' secure, closed-loop referral technology to connect clients to the care they need. LINDSBORG, Kan. — Bethany College is proud to announce its upcoming Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Honor event on October 4 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sundstrom Center in Downtown Lindsborg. This evening will honor outstanding individuals who contributed significantly to Bethany College athletics and beyond.

The Athletic Hall of Honor Award goes to alums whose performance on the athletic field during their time at Bethany was noteworthy and exemplary. Inductees for 2024 include Randy Linton, ‘80; Frenchie Buckner, ‘98; Nicole (Felker) Thompson, ‘13; Kelli (Traffas) Scriven, ‘14; Jenny (Garcia) Castro; ‘15; Miranda (Burton) Drouillard; ‘16.

The Alumni Coach of the Year Award recognizes alums who have directed or coached their sport to an outstanding level of performance. Inductees for 2024 are Rick Bloomquist, '76, and Kim Rolfs, '96.

The Bethany Athletic Association Award of Merit goes to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional skill, sportsmanship, and dedication throughout their careers, leaving a lasting legacy on Bethany College athletics. This year's award goes to Jim Turner, '68.

The event will also feature the alum awards presentation, celebrating the achievements of Bethany College graduates who have excelled in their respective fields and continued support of their alma mater.

The Gold Awards go to Mandy Todd '05 and Alan English '07. This award represents graduates of the last two decades who have made outstanding contributions to society and whose achievements demonstrate a person who shows promise, has high aspirations, and has made a difference in the lives of people around them.

The Alumni Award of Merit goes to Bob Kruger '62 and Ryan Holmquist '05. This award represents graduates of more than 20 years who have exemplified distinguished service as professionals while maintaining an interest in Bethany College.

The Bethany College Distinguished Graduate Award goes to Susan Concannon '80. This graduate award represents outstanding achievement and service to society.

The Bethany College Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes outstanding achievement and service to society by a graduate who has provided "unique and significant service" to the college over their lifetime. The Bethany College Alumni Council may annually give one recipient the Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award. Former classmates or friends make nominations for the award, and the Alumni Council makes selections. This year's award goes to Karma Tidemann '72 and Ross Tidemann '71.

&nbsp;Designed for Kansas students and their families, the Sunflower Summer program provides complimentary access to over 220 tourism attractions across the state. The 2024 Sunflower Summer season will run through August 11.

Did you get a message on social from an “artist” asking to pay you for permission to paint your photo? It’s a scam. They don’t want to pay you — they want to take your money.

Young adults report this scam begins with a direct message on social media from someone who says they like your photo and want to&nbsp;pay&nbsp;you thousands of dollars to use it. Next, they’ll send you a check. They’ll tell you to deposit it, take some money out to send to the artist for supplies, and keep the rest. They may promise to reimburse any money you send back. (But they never will because it's a scam.)

While the check may look real and the funds may initially show up in your bank account, the check’s fake. By the time the bank realizes it, you’ll be out the money you sent the scammer and owe the bank any money you withdrew.

How do you spot this scam?&nbsp;Here’s the takeaway: If someone you don’t know sends you a&nbsp;check&nbsp;and asks you to send money back to them or to someone else, it’s a scam.&nbsp;It’s best to only deposit checks from people you know and trust.

Scammers target young adults on social media with fake check scam

CLAY COUNTY —The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred just before 1:30p.m. Saturday in Clay County.

A vehicle was southbound on Kansas 15 one mile north of 30th road. The vehicle struck a northbound vehicle that turned in front of the southbound vehicle while making a westbound turn on Kansas 9 Highway.

Both vehicles came to rest on Kansas 15. The KHP released no additional details early Sunday. Check the Post for more information as it becomes available.

KHP investigating fatal 2-vehicle crash

KWU is proud to announce that a fully renovated Sams Chapel will reopen Saturday, Oct. 19, as part of Homecoming 2024. The new performance space will be christened with a special concert, titled ‘Come Home,’ which will get underway at 7 p.m. and feature celebrated musical guests from KWU’s recent past. Aine Hakamatsuka ’12 and Christian McQueen ’18 are among those scheduled to perform.

“Oct. 19 will be the culmination of the work of many,” said Ken Oliver, executive vice president of advancement and university operations. “Our supporters, university leadership and the local community have come together to embrace this project. Because of this event, Homecoming 2024 promises to be a weekend to remember for years to come!”

The renovation of Sams Chapel — the first in decades — began in early 2023 and has run concurrently with a complete overhaul of the university’s music spaces. KWU now boasts the Applequist Family Music Center, a dedicated area of new classrooms and top-notch technology, and the new Bieber Hall will add additional foyer space for the department, as well as allow visitors to access Sams Chapel directly.

“Sams Chapel has always been the soul of our campus,” said Dr. Matt Thompson, KWU president. “Oct. 19 will be a landmark day in our history, and we hope many alumni and friends plan to come home to celebrate this wonderful occasion.”

MANHATTAN – Kansas farmers seem to be positioned for a bounce-back in net farm income as 2024 rolls along, according to a report from Kansas State University farm management economist Gregg Ibendahl.

And while, technically, that is good news, it is tempered by the fact that Kansas farmers are coming off one of the toughest years in about a decade. K-State reported earlier this year that 2023 net farm income in the state was, on average, $89,667 – about 56% below the year before.

But in his most recent analysis of 500 grain farms in the&nbsp;<a href="https://agmanager.info/kfma">Kansas Farm Management Association’s database</a>, Ibendahl says “I’m predicting a 23% to 30% increase in net farm income” in 2024 for Kansas farms.

“But that’s really from a very low base to start with, so overall, net farm income is going to be below what it has been for the previous 5-6 years.”

In pure numbers, Kansas farms may see 2024 net farm income hit an average $118,000, according to Ibendahl. In central and western Kansas, those numbers may top $156,000 and $149,000, respectively; net farm income in the east, however, may slow to $72,336 – the only region in the state that won’t see a rise compared to 2023.

Signs are mixed for 2025, he said. Average net farm income in the state may be just below his forecast for 2024, though slightly higher in the west and east and slightly lower in the central region.

“Remember that 2022 was a very good year in Kansas,” Ibendahl said. “Farmers were experiencing very good grain prices and everything looked pretty good. There was quite a bit of crop insurance that helped net farm income that year.”

“But in 2023, we had a case where grain prices dropped, which contributed to lower farm income and farm revenue. We also had a case where we had a big drop in inventory values for the stored grain that farmers had at the end of 2022, because of lower grain prices.”

Poor growing conditions in parts of Kansas also caused a dip in 2023’s grain revenue numbers, Ibendahl said. Crop insurance helped to pull many farmers from bigger losses, in many cases.

In 2024, Ibendahl said, “grain prices haven’t improved a whole lot; they’re still down from what they were a couple years ago. But we’re not going to see the big drop in inventory like we did in 2023, so that factor alone will help the revenue side.” He also doesn’t expect U.S. farmers to receive the level of government assistance that they have in recent years.

Longer term, ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and other parts of the world threaten oil prices, which in turn affects fertilizer prices. Ibendahl also keeps a watchful on inflation and interest rates, and knows that adverse weather will negatively affect production.

“Last year, we had 30% of our farms that had negative farm income,” Ibendahl said. “This year, that may jump to as much as 35% even though I’m looking at a slight increase in net farm income. What that means is that maybe more than one-third of our farms have the potential to have negative net farm income in 2024.”

“You can’t go too many years and have negative net farm income and expect to remain a farmer. So that’s something to look at going forward.”

Cooling Shelter and Charging Stations

The Saline County Health Department, located at 125 W. Elm St., has opened its lobby to the public as a cooling shelter and a place to charge medical devices. The lobby will remain open until 4:30 p.m. today. For questions, residents can call 785-826-6600.

The Kansas-Nebraska Convention of Southern Baptists Disaster Relief and Team Rubicon have mobilized chainsaw teams to assist with limb and debris cleanup. The first team is expected to be in the area this afternoon. While the teams will not haul away debris, they will move it to the curbside for city pickup. Residents in need of this service can contact Saline County Emergency Management at 785.826.6511.

The Kansas Department of Insurance is available to help residents with questions about their insurance coverage or to assist with any issues they may have with their insurance companies. Residents can reach them at 800.432.2484.

Saline County Emergency Management is working with a number of volunteer agencies to assist with clean up efforts. 

"These volunteers are giving up their time to work around the clock and in the heat," said Saline County Public Information Officer Melissa McCoy. "We understand that it can be frustrating but with thousands of people still without power, we need people to be patient with us as we work through this event."

Saline County focuses on recovery efforts following severe thunderstorm

&nbsp;Evergy crews have restored more than 95% of customers who lost power when Wednesday’s severe storms rolled through our service area. About 4,500 customers remain without power as of 10:00 a.m. These are customers in communities that had the most severe damage from the storm, which brought wind speeds as high as 90+ mph.&nbsp;&nbsp;

About 350 line workers from neighboring utilities are joining the 1,100 Evergy personnel working to clear trees and make repairs. Neighboring utilities in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri and Iowa are providing assistance. Crews will continue working until all power is restored.&nbsp;

The hardest hit areas included Salina, Topeka, Lawrence and the Kansas City metro. The storm took down more than 100 power poles in the Topeka and Salina areas, as well as multiple transmission lines near Salina that help deliver power across long distances. Those transmission lines are repaired and back in service. &nbsp;

Most remaining Evergy customers in the Topeka and Salina areas will have power restored today. Some outages may stretch into Saturday afternoon. In Lawrence and the Kansas City metro area, storm restoration is expected to be complete this evening. &nbsp;
