City of Salina On Wednesday, August 7 and Thursday, August 8 Circle C Paving and Construction, LLC of Goddard, Kansas will continue the City of Salina's annual chip seal project by placing a fog seal. The schedule is as follows, weather permitting.

Fog sealing is a method of sealing the new pavement surface which prolongs the serviceability of streets. Combined with joint and crack sealing, this surface treatment program extends the service life of pavement.

Owners and occupants along residential streets will be notified ahead of time that their streets will be closed to traffic while the work is being completed. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the construction altogether and find alternate routes to their destinations while the work is occurring.

The $327,900 project is a major component of the City of Salina’s 2024 $5.9 million maintenance capital improvement program.

Salina’s annual chip seal project continues

U.S. Senator Farmers feed the nation and the world, and with new technology and innovation, farmers will fuel flight as well. Sustainable aviation fuel, also known as SAF, is a biofuel made from products like corn, sorghum, and soybeans that can be used in aircraft and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions than traditional fuels. SAF is the future of biofuels and combines some of the most important industries in my state: aviation and agriculture.

Agriculture is Kansas’s largest economic driver, contributing over $81 billion to the state’s economy. Kansas farmers produce an excess of corn, soybeans, and grain sorghum, all of which have numerous potential uses, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Kansas is also home to Wichita, the Air Capital of the World, where thousands of airplanes and aircraft parts are manufactured every year.

In partnership with SAFFiRE Renewables and Southwest Airlines, Kansas will soon break ground on a facility that will process corn stover for the production of renewable ethanol, which will then be converted into SAF. This is an exciting pathway to producing high-volume, affordable SAF.

The SAF industry has the opportunity to experience tremendous growth, create more markets for our farmers, and increase our domestic energy production and security. However, Congress and the administration need to remove barriers that are blocking the path to success.

I introduced the Farm to Fly Act to help accelerate the production and development of sustainable aviation fuel through existing U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs. This legislation would allow further growth for alternative fuels to be used in the aviation sector and create new markets for American farmers. This legislation would increase the accessibility of biofuels for commercial use and directly support rural America and its farmers, the agriculture industry, and the aviation sector.

Reports indicate that the global sustainable aviation fuel market size and share is expected to grow from its current market revenue of $1.1 billion to $3 billion by 2034. Unfortunately, recent policies issued by the Biden administration are hampering the growth of the SAF industry by limiting the types of crops that can be utilized in SAF production.

To unleash the potential of the SAF industry, the Biden administration needs to finalize the 45Z tax credit so further commitments and investments can be made. Under the guidance issued by the Department of Treasury, there won’t be enough grain feedstock to meet processing demand, and rejecting grain feedstocks is a giant leap backward for SAF production in the U.S.

The Treasury Department’s guidance for the SAF tax credit only allows corn ethanol to qualify if the grain is grown with three practices that are considered “climate-smart”: no-till, cover crops, and energy-efficient fertilizer. Soybean oil would qualify only if the soybeans were grown using no-till and cover crops on the same acreage. The eligibility requirements are so strict that very few farmers can produce eligible feedstocks, and the guidance excludes grain sorghum as an eligible feedstock.

Grain sorghum is drought-tolerant, heat-resistant, and low-input—all factors that contribute to its low carbon intensity (CI) score. These attributes, combined with the demand for renewable energy plants throughout the Midwest, make grain sorghum a great candidate to produce sustainable and climate-smart energy products. Today, only a small percentage of producers meet Treasury’s eligibility requirements, which severely hinders the amount of fuel that can be produced.

To bring more awareness to SAF, I am excited to announce the Senate Sustainable Aviation Caucus. Last month, the House of Representatives launched its own Sustainable Aviation Caucus, and I’m pleased to lead this effort in the Senate. SAF can unlock tremendous benefits for the economy and our farmers while offering a cleaner source of energy for aircraft and a new energy source for our nation.

The industry is poised for success. Yet achieving its full potential hinges on employing the right tools and implementing more workable regulations.

MORAN — Fueling flight: Utilizing biofuels in aviation

Tammy Walker Cancer Center Tammy Walker Cancer Center is among the 17 recipients of this year's Chronic Disease Risk Reduction (CDRR) Grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). The Center received a $20,000 planning grant to fund training and technical assistance aimed at reducing chronic disease risks through evidence-based strategies targeting tobacco use, physical activity, and nutrition.

Cancer Outreach Coordinator Daniel Craig, who led the grant writing effort and will manage the Saline County CDRR grant, highlighted the importance of grant writing skills in the nonprofit sector. “Gaylynn Crosby, my internship supervisor at the American Cancer Society, insisted I learn to write grants and plan community events, which have been invaluable skills,” Craig said. He also emphasized the need for more grant writing training to secure additional state and national funding.

Recently, Tammy Walker Cancer Center served as the fiduciary agent for Live Well Saline County's four-year, $500,000 Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant initiative, which concluded on July 31. The initiative allocated $245,288 towards increasing access and safety at the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, including solar lighting, additional parking spaces, bike racks, and a connecting sidewalk to the Broadway business corridor and City Go Bus stops. Additional funds supported worksite wellness programs, a hospital garden, a relaxation area, and scholarships for Kansas Leadership Center training.

The one-year CDRR planning grant from KDHE will build on the work initiated through the Pathways grant. One of the new projects under development is a community website focused on physical activity and nutrition resources. “The Chronic Disease Risk Reduction grant will enable us to collaborate more effectively as a community,” Craig stated. “It provides opportunities to learn from other communities and share our successes, expanding the capacity of Saline County organizations to address chronic disease risk reduction and better align community goals.”

Bethany College is pleased to announce an upcoming art exhibit featuring the works of Irene Nielsen, running from August 26 to September 27, 2024, at the Mingenback Art Center on the Bethany College campus. The exhibit is free and open to the public, with gallery hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The artist invites the public to the Gallery for a reception on September 27 at&nbsp;4:15 p.m.

The featured artist, Irene Nielsen, will present approximately forty canvases in oil, acrylic, and jewelry mixed media. Selected pieces will be available for purchase. Eclectic design and storytelling characterize Nielsen's work, with many pieces reflecting her background in the Pacific Northwest, Lindsborg, and rural Kansas. The show is a tribute to her late brother, A. John Pearson, of Lindsborg, KS.

Nielsen has dedicated her life to painting and hosted the Porcelain Art School in Lindsborg, attracting artists and students nationwide. Now semi-retired, she focuses on painting while teaching online psychology graduate students at Southern New Hampshire University. Nielsen finds inspiration in the intersection of her diverse activities.

"The activity of painting immerses the soul with emotion and reflection. Psychology plays a huge role in storytelling on canvas," said Nielsen. "My happiness comes from the timeless flow of color, form, structure, and ideas. I invite everyone to join the art show and the reception on September 27 to share in the joy and creativity of this event."

On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs officially made Harrison Butker, the highest paid placekicker in the league, signing him to a four-year $25.6 million dollar contract.

This new deal makes the 29-year-old Butker the highest paid kicker on an annual basis, surpassing Justin Tucker and Jake Elliot.

Butker has spent his entire career as a Chief and has been on the mark since day one, knocking through 89% of his field goals and 95% of his PATs, converting 33-35 FG attempts and all 38 of his PATs in 2023.

Monday also saw the announcement that The Kansas Jayhawks are ranked No. 24 in the preseason Coaches Poll, this marks KU football’s first appearance in the preseason Coaches Poll since 2008

Under Leipold, the Jayhawks are no strangers to the Poll, which slotted Kansas as No. 23 to finish the 2023 season. Kansas made four separate appearances in the poll during the 2023 season

And finally &nbsp;Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels is one of 50 players named to the watch list for the 2024 Walter Camp Football Foundation’s Player of the Year Award, which is given annually to the college football player of the year.

This is the second preseason watch list for Daniels, who was previously honored by the Maxwell Award, and it is his second consecutive year being named to the Walter Camp Award watch list.

910 KINA Sports Headlines -- August 6

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris have captured much of my attention over the past week. If you were to enter our house or office at any given time, you’d likely find the television on in the background with a competition being broadcast. 

My social media channels and news outlet feeds have also been full of stories coming from this year’s Olympics. Some content consists of the heart-warming stories of athletes, some are about the controversies, and some are about the food found within the Olympic Village.

Preparing and providing food for so many athletes from all over the world is a challenge I would not want to tackle. The logistics of securing enough food to create an estimated 13-million snacks and meals and ensuring that each athlete’s nutritional needs are met are mind boggling. 

I’d also be concerned about my ability to successfully provide a rich variety of options that reflect the cultural makeup and food preferences of the Olympic athletes. Simply put, it’s a huge culinary and nutritional undertaking to create so many meals for so many athletes from all around the globe.  I’m glad there are professionals who can do it.

A focus during this Olympics has been to highlight and celebrate tastes from the different regions within France and sourcing from as many food sectors from within the host country. 

The next Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles in 2028. 

What will be the foods and flavors highlighted then when serving the masses? 

There’s no doubt that during the 2028 Olympics the food professionals tasked with providing an astronomical number of meals will be successful in sourcing from the diverse supply of food produced by America’s farmers and ranchers.

There’s also no doubt that there will be an abundance of food options as reflected by the variety of agricultural operations one can find throughout the United States.

Whether it’s meat, eggs, dairy, fruits, vegetables, cereals, oil seeds, protein crops, fish and aquaculture, and even alcoholic drinks, American ag products will be ready to be served.

The Olympics is a place where an exchange of cultures takes place every four years. I can’t wait until 2028 when the vast diversity of our American agricultural products play an integral role in the feeding and fueling of the most elite athletes from around the world as they go for the gold.

If you were to enter our house or office at any given time, you’d likely find the television on in the background with a competition being broadcast. My social media channels and news outlet feeds have also been full of stories coming from this year’s Olympics. Some content consists of the heart-warming stories of athletes, some are about the controversies, and some are about the food found within the Olympic Village.Preparing and providing food for so many athletes from all over the world is a challenge I would not want to tackle. The logistics of securing enough food to create an estimated 13-million snacks and meals and ensuring that each athlete’s nutritional needs are met are mind boggling. I’d also be concerned about my ability to successfully provide a rich variety of options that reflect the cultural makeup and food preferences of the Olympic athletes. Simply put, it’s a huge culinary and nutritional undertaking to create so many meals for so many athletes from all around the globe. I’m glad there are professionals who can do it.A focus during this Olympics has been to highlight and celebrate tastes from the different regions within France and sourcing from as many food sectors from within the host country. The next Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles in 2028. What will be the foods and flavors highlighted then when serving the masses? There’s no doubt that during the 2028 Olympics the food professionals tasked with providing an astronomical number of meals will be successful in sourcing from the diverse supply of food produced by America’s farmers and ranchers. Insight: Going for gold

CLAY COUNTY—The Kansas Highway Patrol on Monday identified the man who died in an accident that occurred just before 1:30p.m. Saturday in Clay County.

According to the patrol, a 2023 Chevy Tahoe driven by Hannah Marie&nbsp;Fahey, 25, Clay Center, was northbound on Kansas 15&nbsp;attempting to turn westbound on Kansas Highway 9.&nbsp; The driver&nbsp;turned in front of a southbound 2002 Harley Davidson Electra Glide driven by Daniel Eugene Barnhilld, 56, Washington, Kansas.&nbsp; The motorcycle struck the SUV.

Barnhilld was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home. Fahey was not injured and had one juvenile in the Tahoe.&nbsp;&nbsp;Barnhilld was not wearing a helmet, according to the KHP.

A vehicle was southbound on Kansas 15 one mile north of 30th road. The vehicle struck a northbound vehicle that turned in front of the southbound vehicle while making a westbound turn on Kansas 9 Highway.

Both vehicles came to rest on Kansas 15. The KHP released no additional details early Sunday. Check the Post for more information as it becomes available.

Salina Symphony announces Youth Education Program auditions

Berco, Inc. Bennington State Bank to acquire Alliance Bank in Topeka

Early Friday morning, Salina Police Department (SPD) officers responded to a reported disturbance involving a woman wielding a hatchet. 

Captain James Feldman said officers received multiple calls regarding a woman trying to break into a residence with a hatchet in the 400 block of Baker Street on Friday at approximately 6:30 a.m.

"Upon arrival, contact was made with Andrea Decker, a 52-year-old female from Salina. She stated that her cell phone had been stolen, and she had tracked it to this area and decided she was going to go into the residence where she thought it was," Feldman said. 

Decker allegedly damaged the door and its metal frame with the hatchet. 

According to the police report, Decker admitted that she intended to threaten the individual inside the residence if she gained entry. She was subsequently arrested and charged with attempted burglary and criminal damage to property.

Starting today, Kansans can visit <a href="http://ksplates.kansas.gov">ksplates.kansas.gov</a> to select their favorite design. Voting will end at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9, and the winning design will be announced on Monday, Aug. 12.

“We know how passionate Kansans are about license plates, and this initiative aims to give the public a direct say in selecting the next personalized plate design that will be featured on vehicles across the state for years to come,”&nbsp;said David Harper, Director of KDOR Division of Vehicles. “We look forward to seeing which design Kansans choose.”

The website offers five distinctive design options for Kansans to select from.

Voting on this round of personalized designs is different from the standard license plate designs Kansans voted on last December. To streamline the process and meet production deadlines, KDOR incorporated feedback from last year’s voting to inform aspects of these designs, including a Kansas outline, wheat, and sunflowers.

The winning design will replace the current “Powering the Future” personalized license plate design.

Residents may vote for their preferred design multiple times. Shortly after the voting concludes, the winning design will enter production and be available for purchase in 2025.

The voting website was made possible with help from the Information Network of Kansas. Kansans can cast their vote by visiting <a href="http://ksplates.kansas.gov">ksplates.kansas.gov</a>.

With the news on Friday that the national unemployment rate is up again to 4.3%, the highest since 2021, the ripples of that are being felt across the Midwest.&nbsp;

"We can say pretty safely that this U.S. economy and the Mid-American economy is slowing down fairly significantly," said Creighton University economist Ernie Goss prior to the release. "The manufacturing sector in Kansas is moving sideways to a bit down."

Goss previously has said that the rate of increasing debt in the federal government is not sustainable. It's also important to note that the government pays a higher rate on its debt when overall rates are higher.

"That is the big elephant there in the room, and that's the interest payments on the debt, which is now greater than the military budget," Goss said.&nbsp; "We're talking about over a trillion dollars spending for our own interest, and the rates are going to be elevated for some time."

The Federal Reserve plans to cut interest rates at its September meeting, and Goss believes they will do so a second time in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Goss: Economy slowing down 'fairly significantly'

Governor Laura Kelly recently signed a proclamation recognizing August as “Kansas Breastfeeding Month,” highlighting the importance of breastfeeding for the health and well-being of Kansans. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition have partnered in bringing awareness to the many benefits of breastfeeding.

“We are extremely pleased with Governor Kelly’s proclamation, which highlights the importance of breastfeeding support for families in Kansas,”&nbsp;Brenda Bandy, IBCLC, Executive Director of the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition (KBC), said.&nbsp;“This proclamation supports their decision and fosters a landscape of breastfeeding support in our state for the benefit of Kansas children and families.”&nbsp;

Over 90 percent of families in Kansas choose to breastfeed. Yet less than one in four Kansas infants are exclusively breastfed through the critical first six months of life. Lack of support and barriers in the workplace can often be obstacles for parents who choose to breastfeed.&nbsp;

“We know breastfeeding has many positive impacts,”&nbsp;Derik Flerlage, Director of KDHE Bureau of Family Health, said. “Strong statewide partnerships and community collaboration allow our programs to better serve the needs of Kansas families as they care for children during their critical first months.”

A large collaborative K-State 105 project is bringing together 12 partners — including Kansas State University units, other higher education institutions and health organizations — to help improve rural and agriculture-connected health across the state.

The Rural Ag Health Community Health Worker project focuses on sustaining the health and safety of rural Kansans and the agricultural workforce. The project is establishing resource and service hubs staffed by community health workers who are co-supervised by local K-State Research and Extension units and health care partners. The project has received funding and support through the K-State 105 initiative.

"Local extension units participating in the Rural Ag Health Community Health Worker project serve as a gateway to help rural residents manage chronic conditions, prevent injuries and reduce risk of illness," said Elaine Johannes, Kansas Health Foundation distinguished professor in community health and state extension specialist. "Extension units are known for providing education to promote and improve health; now, with the addition of community health workers, extension will be a resource and partner for local health care teams."

The community health worker project will involve work in 16 counties, including Allen, Bourbon, Clay, Cloud, Crawford, Jackson, Jefferson, Labette, Marshall, Montgomery, Nemaha, Neosho, Republic, Washington, Wilson and Woodson counties.

The K-State units involved in the project include five K-State Research and Extension units across the state, the College of Health and Human Sciences, the College of Agriculture and the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering.

The external and community partners include the University of Kansas Medical Center Communities Organizing to Promote Equity, or COPE; Unite Us, a technology company that focuses on social care delivery; the Kansas Community Health Worker Coalition with the Wichita State University Community Engagement Institute; Health Innovations Network of Kansas; and other local health care partners.

"K-State 105 is focused on bringing people and partners together for the good of Kansas, and that's exactly what this project is doing," said Jessica Gnad, K-State 105 director. "We're building an ecosystem of support to help address a key area — in this case, health care — that is affecting economic prosperity in Kansas."

The partners in the project are recruiting and hiring five community health workers who will be based in several K-State Research and Extension districts — including Wildcat, Southwind, Meadowlark and River Valley — as well as the K-State Research and Extension — Marshall County office. Members of KU COPE will help empower community health workers by providing their training and expertise to enhance the community health workers' ability to serve their communities. An aim is to share this model statewide to ensure consistent, high-quality and accessible health and social care services through an expanded community health workforce.

"When called upon, extension's community health workers can provide health coaching, client support, nonclinical services, care coordination and outreach activities with local health and care services," Johannes said. "Across the nation, community health workers' scope of work includes these services along with health education, supporting community health initiatives and being a liaison between providers and health care. Through this Rural Ag Health Community Health Worker project, we'll learn how extension can contribute to improved health care access for all."

K-State Research and Extension community health workers and their health care and service collaborators will use Unite Us' secure, closed-loop referral technology to connect clients to the care they need. Additionally, community health workers will gather information about prominent health issues and identify health disparities in the communities they serve, enabling more targeted and effective interventions.

"It is exciting to participate in this boots-on-the-ground project to identify if a model of employing community health workers is feasible and how they can make difference in the lives of Kansas families," said Susie Latta, K-State Research and Extension — Marshall County family and consumer sciences agent.

K-State 105 is Kansas State University's answer to the call for a comprehensive economic growth and advancement solution for Kansas. The initiative leverages the statewide K-State Research and Extension network to deliver the full breadth of the university's collective knowledge and solution-driven innovation to every Kansan, right where they live and work. Additionally, K-State 105 forges the connections and partnerships that create access to additional expertise within other state institutions and agencies, nonprofits and organizations — all part of an effort to build additional capacities and strengths in each of the 105 counties in the state.

Early voting wraps up today, 2024 Primary Election tomorrow

LINDSBORG, Kan. — Bethany College is proud to announce its upcoming Alumni Awards and Athletic Hall of Honor event on October 4 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sundstrom Center in Downtown Lindsborg. This evening will honor outstanding individuals who contributed significantly to Bethany College athletics and beyond.

The Athletic Hall of Honor Award goes to alums whose performance on the athletic field during their time at Bethany was noteworthy and exemplary. Inductees for 2024 include Randy Linton, ‘80; Frenchie Buckner, ‘98; Nicole (Felker) Thompson, ‘13; Kelli (Traffas) Scriven, ‘14; Jenny (Garcia) Castro; ‘15; Miranda (Burton) Drouillard; ‘16.

The Alumni Coach of the Year Award recognizes alums who have directed or coached their sport to an outstanding level of performance. Inductees for 2024 are Rick Bloomquist, '76, and Kim Rolfs, '96.

The Bethany Athletic Association Award of Merit goes to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional skill, sportsmanship, and dedication throughout their careers, leaving a lasting legacy on Bethany College athletics. This year's award goes to Jim Turner, '68.

The event will also feature the alum awards presentation, celebrating the achievements of Bethany College graduates who have excelled in their respective fields and continued support of their alma mater.

The Gold Awards go to Mandy Todd '05 and Alan English '07. This award represents graduates of the last two decades who have made outstanding contributions to society and whose achievements demonstrate a person who shows promise, has high aspirations, and has made a difference in the lives of people around them.

The Alumni Award of Merit goes to Bob Kruger '62 and Ryan Holmquist '05. This award represents graduates of more than 20 years who have exemplified distinguished service as professionals while maintaining an interest in Bethany College.

The Bethany College Distinguished Graduate Award goes to Susan Concannon '80. This graduate award represents outstanding achievement and service to society.

The Bethany College Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes outstanding achievement and service to society by a graduate who has provided "unique and significant service" to the college over their lifetime. The Bethany College Alumni Council may annually give one recipient the Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award. Former classmates or friends make nominations for the award, and the Alumni Council makes selections. This year's award goes to Karma Tidemann '72 and Ross Tidemann '71.
