The Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) proudly earned the 2024 Best Community Awareness Campaign Award (Medium Budget Category) from the Travel Industry Association of Kansas for its “I Like Ike” campaign. 

Announced at the Kansas Tourism Conference in Olathe, the award recognizes Abilene’s creativity and innovative tourism strategies.

Judges praised the campaign for its exceptional use of brand assets and strong collaboration. They described Abilene as “a booming town of the largest things” and commended the marketing strategy for driving both in-person and online traffic. 

Additional feedback highlighted the campaign’s success in leveraging Eisenhower’s legacy, gaining media coverage, and attracting visitors with quirky roadside attractions.

The “I Like Ike” campaign connected local businesses and attractions with visitors to the Eisenhower Presidential Library &amp; Museum through creative marketing and community engagement. More than 200 yard and window signs featuring playful themes like “I Like Trains,” “I Like Greyhounds,” and “I Like Shopping” directed visitors to local Ike-friendly spots. Weekly blog posts showcased area attractions and were distributed across e-newsletters, social media, and the CVB website.

The project also included a dedicated webpage at <a href="http://www.worldslargestikebutton.com">www.worldslargestikebutton.com</a> and earned extensive media and travel writer coverage to increase visibility.

A limited edition “I Like Ike” challenge coin was introduced to help offset project costs, while the campaign culminated in the installation of the World’s Largest “I Like Ike” Button at Little Ike Park.

“This campaign brought together local businesses, attractions, history enthusiasts, and visitors, all while celebrating President Eisenhower’s legacy. Winning this award highlights the power of community partnerships and creative tourism strategies,” said Julie Roller Weeks, Abilene CVB Director.

In addition, the Abilene CVB earned the Best Collaboration Award (Large Budget Category) for the Kansas Gunsmoke Trail, a joint effort with Dodge City, Hays, and Wichita. Judges praised the partnership, calling it an exceptional example of collaboration and applauding the project’s website, creative itineraries, and gamification. The Kansas Gunsmoke Trail connects cowboy-themed attractions across the four cities.

“This collaboration is a great example of how communities can join forces to share their stories and attract visitors,” said Roller Weeks. “Each city brings a unique connection to Gunsmoke, and together we’ve created a one-of-a-kind experience for fans and history lovers.”

Abilene CVB takes home top honors at Kansas Tourism Conference

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, but when caught early, chances for survival are greatly increased. New technology recently implemented at Salina Regional Health Center is allowing doctors to identify lung cancer at earlier stages, less invasively than ever before.

The Ion Robotic-Assisted Bronchoscopy system utilized by Salina Regional Pulmonologist Jorge Cedano, M.D., uses a small catheter to access nodules deep within the lung – through the mouth and airways – to examine and biopsy suspicious tissue. The procedure is performed with pathology available at the bedside to give initial evaluations of tissue specimens collected.

The Ion system features an ultra-thin, flexible catheter with an integrated vision probe that allows the doctor to see their movements on a screen and navigate their way in real time using a CT scan of the patient’s lung. Biopsies can then be taken once the suspicious nodule has been reached with the catheter.

Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy has been shown to be safer than traditional transthoracic needle biopsies or open lung biopsies. Patients undergo robotic-assisted bronchoscopy as an outpatient procedure.

“This is something that changes people’s lives, changes people’s prognosis, and also is safe,” Dr. Cedano said. “We now can get very small nodules out in the periphery of the lung that we couldn’t get before.”

Many people at risk for lung cancer, including former smokers, those exposed to known industrial hazards or with a family risk for the disease, undergo regular screening for the disease with low-dose CT scans of the lungs. When these screenings – or other tests – find suspicious nodules in the lungs – biopsy is often recommended to assess for cancer.

Lung cancer found early – Stage I or Stage II – is often highly treatable. Usually, early-stage lung cancer has no outward symptoms. When symptoms do develop, like coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing or hoarseness, lung cancer has often reached a more advanced stage that is harder to treat.

SRHC uses advanced technology for improved early lung cancer detection

Sometime between Wednesday night and the early morning hours on Thursday, a motorcycle belonging to a Centralia man was reported stolen from a central Salina residence.&nbsp;

According to Salina Police Department (SPD) Cpt. James Feldman, the theft was reported to SPD at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. The incident occurred in the 1400 block of E. Minneapolis Ave., where a 21-year-old victim had parked his white 2008 Honda CBR RR motorcycle in the driveway while visiting a friend. The victim stated that the motorcycle went missing sometime between 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday and 4:30 a.m. on Thursday.

At around noon on October 24, a neighbor reported finding the motorcycle behind a privacy fence in an easement in the 1500 block of East Minneapolis Ave. SPD officers determined that several of the motorcycle's electrical wires had been cut.

Feldman noted that SPD continues to investigate the theft and encourages the public to contact them with any information that may help identify those responsible for the theft and damage. SPD can be reached at (785) 826-7210.

On October 26 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., customers can bring in their four-legged family members, with or without costume, to have their photos taken by a local photographer. The first 25 participants will also receive a free magnetic picture frame.&nbsp;

Saline County Jail Bookings, Oct. 25

Two semi-trailers with essential supplies from north-central Kansas arrived safely on the East Coast this week, providing much-needed relief to families affected by Hurricane Helene and Milton. The trucks carrying food, water, tents, sleeping bags, and cooking equipment, were sent by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/CRPlating/">C&amp;R Plating</a> in Minneapolis, Kans. in partnership with <a href="https://www.facebook.com/dougbradleytrucking">Doug Bradley Trucking</a>.

The supplies is being distributed across communities in North Carolina and other states where families have been struggling to recover in the aftermath of the hurrianes that swept through the area at the end of September and early part of Oct.&nbsp;

Despite the successful delivery, relief organizers are anticipating a second round of donations as colder weather looms and many families remain without adequate winter clothing and supplies.

Kevin Cline, president of C&amp;R Plating, who spearheaded the effort, traveled with the convoy and met with families on the ground. 

North-central Kansas community—including Salina, Minneapolis, and oter communities in Ottawa County—donated enough supplies to fill nearly two full semi-trailers. In addition a total of $7,300 in donations helped purchase items like food, charcoal, and chainsaws. Cline emphasized the need for continued support.

"We will see what else they need, and then maybe see if we can do another drive for specialty things because they're going to be needing it," Kevin said. "Our community has been beyond amazing. I don't have words to describe it. I was overwhelmed."

Cline has been in touch with officials and relief organizations to identify the most critical needs for the winter months ahead.

🎙King in the Community — Saline County Administrator, Phil Smith-Hanes

The Salina Police Department (SPD) is investigating the theft of a vehicle reported by a local woman earlier this week. 

According to SPD Captain James Feldman, a 36-year-old Salina resident reported her 2006 gray Dodge Charger missing from the Dillon’s parking lot at 1201 W. Crawford on October 23.

According to the victim, on October 18, she parked her car at Dillon's after experiencing a flat tire. She replaced the flat with a spare and left the vehicle in the lot while she tried to locate a repair shop. 

Feldman said during that time, she lost her keys.

On October 19, the woman returned with a locksmith to unlock the vehicle, hoping to find the keys inside, but they were not in the car.&nbsp; She left the car in the parking lot and returned on October 23 with a new key, only to discover the vehicle had been stolen.

A search through the Flock Safety system revealed the vehicle was in Wichita on October 19. The vehicle, a 2006 Dodge Charger with Kansas license plate 6325ACR, is valued at $3,500.

The Saline County Road and Bridge Department is planning several improvements to county roads to maintain and improve local transportation routes.

Asphalt Overlay and Patching: Scheduled for Water Well Road, from Ohio Street to Smoky Hill River Bridge, and Burma Road, from Smolan Road to Falun Road. These improvements will help preserve the pavement and extend its life. (See the black line on the map.)

Chip Sealing: About 31 miles of roads are planned for chip sealing, which helps maintain road surfaces and improves drivability. (See the blue line on the map.)

Ohio Street Improvements: Ohio Street, from Mentor Road to Water Well Road, will be elevated and re-graveled, using a chemical base stabilizer for added durability. The design phase is currently underway.

Schippel Road Bridge and Simpson Road Improvements: This project will replace a drainage structure near the Schippel/Simpson Road intersection and improve Simpson Road from Schippel Road to Campbell Road. (See the brown rectangle on the map.)

Water Well Road Replacement: The Water Well Road bridge, which began in 2024, will continue into 2025. (See the brown rectangle on the map.)

Reinforced Concrete Box Construction: Six deteriorating drainage structures will be replaced with reinforced concrete box structures. (See the light blue circle on the map.)

As the county prepares for 2025, the following projects are already underway or completed in the last quarter of 2024:

Pipe Lining Projects: A total of 21 pipe locations are scheduled for lining work. Mayer Specialty Services was awarded the contract for $554,463.95, and the installation of concrete and PVC liners began this year and will continue into 2025.

Chip Sealing: Circle C Paving completed several miles of chip sealing across the county for $1,021,633.

Water Well Road Replacement: Construction east of Gypsum Valley Road is slated to begin this month under a contract awarded to King Construction for $825,548.62. The project is expected to take 6-7 months.

Crack Sealing: Pavement Pros has been contracted for $130,480 to complete crack sealing. This work is expected to be finished by late fall 2024.

Saline County announces 2025 road, bridge improvement plans

Saline County has been designated a Kansas Broadband Ready Community, one of only four counties in the state to achieve the certification. The designation reflects the county's efforts to improve digital connectivity and expand broadband access for residents and businesses.

"This designation comes at a critical time as Kansas office of Broadband Developement (KOBD) launches our application for the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) program, which will fund more than 52,000 eligible locations across the state,” said Joseph Le, Interim Director of the Kansas Office of Broadband Development. “Being designated as a Broadband-Ready Community, Saline County is prepared for today's digital demands and future-proofed to continue its momentum."

Broadband Providers: Let’s Work Together

The Saline County Commission recently approved a resolution to streamline the process for broadband providers.

“We have worked hard over the last few years to understand and tackle broadband issues,” said&nbsp;Joe Hay, Jr. Saline County Commission Chair. “We are proud to obtain this recognition that we are ready to collaborate to expand high-speed internet across our community and ensure everyone can access the digital infrastructure needed for growth and development. We want providers to know that we want them here, and we are READY for them.”

The commission designated County Engineer Justin Mader as the single point of contact for all broadband-related projects, ensuring providers can navigate the process efficiently from start to finish. Mader will review and either approve or deny project applications within 30 business days. 

To simplify the process further, providers have the option to submit forms electronically. Mader will review and either approve or deny project applications within 30 business days. To simplify the process further, providers have the option to submit forms electronically. Salina Senior Theatre Project ‘Evening of One Acts’ this weekend

With Election Day fast approaching, the <a href="https://www.lwvsalina.org/">Salina League of Women Voters</a>&nbsp; held a candidate forum on Sunday, just one day before hundreds of voters went to the ballot box on the first day of early voting.&nbsp;

Local and state candidates addressed critical issues, including abortion, Medicaid expansion, county facility needs, homelessness, school safety, marijuana legalization, and more. 

The forum, held at the Stiefel Theatre Watson Room on Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m., began with each candidate delivering one-minute opening remarks. Questions were then alternated among the candidates, starting with those from a media panel, followed by questions from the audience.

Candidates were allowed one minute responses.&nbsp;

Candidates present at the League of Women Voters forum included:

Candidates for the Kansas House&nbsp;— 69th District Incumbent, Rep. Clarke Sanders, Republican; Lori Blake, Democrat

Candidate for Kansas Senate&nbsp;— 24th John Baker, Democrat&nbsp;

Candidates for Saline County Commission District Two Open Seat&nbsp;— Annie Grevas, Republican Primary Winner; Kathleen Malone Crouch, Write-In Candidate, Republican

JR Claeys, incumbent for the 24th Senate District, did not attend.

The Salina Post newsroom called Senator Claeys for comment on his vision and policy positions but has not received a response.

Abortion was the first topic asked about during the conversation between candidates and voters. Sanders, a firm supporter of pro-life initiatives, spoke about his legislative efforts following the failure of the 2022 Value Them Both constitutional amendment.

"From my perspective, unfortunately, Value Them Both failed," Sanders said. "So we now have to find ways to do what we can in the pro-life movement. One of the things I did in 2023 was offer the Infant Born Alive Protection Act. We also, this past session, passed help for pregnancy service centers, which provide services for moms and dads, both before and after the baby is born."

Sanders also advocated for legislation that would give men more say in abortion decisions. 

"We need to get some legislation that gives some power to men because as it stands right now, they have no say in the abortion issue," Sanders noted. "Even if they're a husband, they can't. They have no say, and she didn't create the baby on her own."

In contrast, Blake, a pro-choice candidate, argued against government interference in personal medical decisions.

"I believe that our voters have spoken on this issue," Blake said. "I am personally opposed to the government being in my medical room making personal decisions about my body. I trust women to include the fathers of their children in those decisions, and that's a decision that those people should be making with their medical providers."

Medicaid expansion also divided the candidates. Baker strongly supported expanding Medicaid in Kansas, citing both economic and moral reasons.

"I fully support the expansion of Medicaid in the state of Kansas," Baker stated. "We send out, I think it's over $6 billion at this point to other states who have expanded their programs. Expanding Medicaid could also serve as a lifeline to our rural communities, which are honestly dying, and it's scary."

Baker also emphasized the importance of improving access to healthcare.

"People need health care services. Somebody shouldn't have to drive multiple hours to receive the care that they need," Baker said.&nbsp;

Sanders, however, voiced his opposition to Medicaid expansion, citing concerns about its impact on current beneficiaries and state finances.

"I'm opposed to the expansion of Medicaid," Sanders said. "What it would do is add 140,000 to 150,000 able-bodied, 19 to 60-year-olds to the Medicaid rolls. There are already people that are back in line, and that would just push them further back. We don't know what it would cost."

Blake countered by discussing the importance of expanding Medicaid for children and low-income families.

"Since January, there have been 57,000 children removed from our Medicaid rolls because of the COVID eligibility," Blake said. "Those 57,000 children would be captured in this Medicaid expansion, along with another 150,000. A family of four to qualify currently is $11,856. These are impoverished people."

County facility needs and unused buildings

The discussion then turned to the needs of Saline County and the City of Salina, particularly in addressing facility issues such as the health department and abandoned buildings.

Grevas, who worked for the county for 35 years, emphasized the need to repurpose existing buildings, specifically the health department and the old jail.

"This is one of my top priorities, abandoned buildings, repurposing existing buildings," Grevas said. "The health department needs a new space. It's got a leaky roof, and it's been that way for a long time. People want the jail to be repurposed, but it is going to take several million dollars to do that."

Malone Crouch agreed but raised concerns about the condition of some buildings.

"I agree there are buildings that we should be using," Crouch said. "However, having worked in the basement of that building that the old jail is in, I know that when it rained, the basement flooded, and that's not how we need to spend our time."

On the issue of growing unhoused populations in Kansas, Baker stressed the importance of addressing the housing crisis and the need for mental health services.

"Housing is extremely expensive right now. I'm a professional. My wife is a professional, and we're not in a position to buy a home right now because the prices are outrageous," Baker said. "I think we need much greater access to mental health resources in our communities. A lot of people who are homeless struggle with addiction and substance abuse."

Sanders agreed that homelessness is a complex issue but focused on addiction as a key factor.

"Homelessness is a really big and tough issue," Sanders said. "If there were simple solutions, people would have come up with them by now. One thing we should pass is legislation that says one unit of government can't ship their homelessness to another county."

Blake took a more collaborative approach, highlighting Saline County's ability to use public and private resources effectively.

"I think Salina and Saline County are a beacon of hope for our state in how we work together," Blake said. "We should look at putting together a pool of grants that could be competitive, as we did with COVID dollars."

The candidates also discussed the legalization of marijuana, with differing opinions on how the state should proceed. Sanders expressed his support for medical marijuana but remained opposed to recreational use.
