The Saline County Sheriff's Office continued its Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday allowing anyone to drop off unused prescriptions.

The two locations include Dillons at&nbsp;1235 E. Cloud Street and Walmart at&nbsp;2900 S. Ninth Street. In total 184.2 pounds of prescription drugs was collected, with 143 pounds at Dillons and 41.2 pounds at Walmart. 

According to Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Sean Kochanowski, contents in the drop-off event are disposed of in a buried location in Salina's landfill.

Since Kochanowski took over the operation in October 2013, they have collected a total of 15,000+ pounds of drugs.&nbsp;

Salina Presbyterian Manor 44th annual soup supper Tuesday

Submitted Rolling Hills Zoo (RHZ) announced with heavy hearts that it recently said goodbye to&nbsp;Bexookee, affectionately known as "Bex," the zoo’s beloved puma.&nbsp; Bex had been under close observation by the RHZ animal care team and veterinary staff due to&nbsp;age related&nbsp;declining health over the past months. Despite dedicated&nbsp;professional care, Bex&nbsp;recently experienced&nbsp;an overall decline in her quality of life. After careful consideration, the team made the compassionate decision to humanely euthanize Bex, ensuring her comfort and dignity in her final moments.

In the wild, pumas, also known as cougars or mountain lions, generally have a life expectancy of 8 to 13 years, though&nbsp;Bex lived to 18 under human care. Bex&nbsp;was originally found as an orphaned cub in Wyoming. Her name,&nbsp;Bexookee—the Arapaho word for "cougar"—was a tribute to her early Wyoming roots. The Wyoming Game &amp; Fish Department arranged her placement at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, Illinois, where she lived until her transfer to Rolling Hills Zoo in October 2018.

Bex was known not only for her striking appearance but also for her vibrant personality. "She was sassy and fierce, and while it took a while to warm up to her keepers, when she did, she formed a bond and trust that was unmatched," said Devney Olson-Bowen, Head Keeper at RHZ. “Whenever I would come into the area, she would come running up and would ‘chat’ by making a chirping noise that cougars use to communicate.”

Bex’s playfulness was a delight to all who knew her. She loved her catnip ball, ostrich eggs&nbsp;and&nbsp;small boomer balls, as well as rolling anything she could find around her exhibit. Even an unlikely item, like a head of lettuce, became a toy in her paws. She was equally fond of large cardboard boxes, squeezing into them whenever she could, as if living by the motto, "If she fits, she sits!" And when it came to food, nothing captured her heart quite like fish, which made bonding with her an easy feat for her&nbsp;keepers.

Since her arrival at RHZ, Bex became a cherished member of the zoo family, captivating visitors with her beauty, grace. Her presence reminded staff and guests alike of the vital role zoos play in providing homes for animals in need and educating the public about wildlife conservation.

The Rolling Hills Zoo family extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone who visited and appreciated Bex over the years. She will be dearly missed but remembered fondly by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Rolling Hills Zoo announces passing of mountain lion, Bex

Dickinson County Sheriff’s Deputies are investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a weekend arrest.

Just before 5p.m. Sunday, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office received a call for service regarding an unknown woman attempting to break into a residence in the 700 Block of Kansas 18 Highway, according to Undersheriff&nbsp;Jeff Vaughan.

 A Deputy responded and made contact with the suspect later identified as 54-year-old Denise Sheffield of Junction City, outside the residence. 

Sheffield was uncooperative and raised a fist to hit a deputy. She was quickly handcuffed at that time but continued flailing around and kicked a deputy and also refused to identify herself.

During the investigation, it was learned that Sheffield yelled profanities and threats at the resident who remained inside the house. It was also learned that Sheffield pulled up her dress and exposed herself to the resident who was watching her through a window.

Deputies booked Sheffield into the Dickinson County Detention Facility on requested charges of Attempted Aggravated Burglary, Criminal Trespass, Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Threat, Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer and Interference with a Law Enforcement Officer.

From October 29 through November 1, Circle C Paving &amp; Construction of Goddard, Kansas, will proceed with the City of Salina’s annual pavement crack sealing project. The work will involve sealing cracks on Elm, Park, and Johnstown streets, weather permitting.

Crews will be working between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., with access to properties within work zones maintained throughout the project. Motorists should expect “Road Work Ahead” signs, temporary single-lane closures, and are advised to exercise caution when approaching work areas to ensure worker safety.

The annual crack and joint sealing program is part of the City of Salina’s preventative street maintenance strategy. By sealing pavement cracks, the program helps prevent water penetration into the pavement structure, which can lead to costly repairs. Sealing helps mitigate common issues such as crack spreading, voids, and the shifting of sub-base materials, contributing to the long-term durability of Salina’s streets.

This project marks the tenth installment in the City of Salina’s 2024 Crack Seal maintenance efforts, with a total project cost of $498,000.

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers are investigating the theft of a motorcycle reported stolen early on October 25 in the 2000 block of Harold Avenue in Salina. 

According to SPD Capt. James Feldman, a 31-year-old woman reported her red 2015 Honda motorcycle, bearing Missouri license plate JB3TK stolen from her residence sometime between 1 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. on Friday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the victim, the motorcycle, valued at approximately $5,000,&nbsp; was stolen while she was asleep. Feldman said that the victim provided officers with information on a potential suspect, which could assist in the ongoing investigation.

Motorcycle reported stolen in Salina; SPD investigate potential lead

The Salina Crossroads Marathon has seen a significant surge in participation this year, with more than 5,200 runners registered for the 2024 race set for Nov. 2.&nbsp; Co-Race Director Daniel Craig said this year’s impressive number of runners dwarfs the 817 participants the race saw in 2022. The growth of the event is largely attributed to the dedication of more than 25 committee members, the hospitality of Salina residents, and the race layout. Craig noted that many participants return to the race for the challenge of the hill on the marathon course. Some runners switch from the half marathon to the full marathon to tackle the hill twice. The course’s mix of flatness and beautiful scenery has turned the Salina Crossroads Marathon into a key attraction for runners from across the region. The marathon also serves as a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.

"We have seen an increase from 3,400 registered runners last year at this time to over 5,015 as of today. Most if not all of that success can be credited to Salina's Locally Famous Hill which is runner's favorite part of the race and a key reason that runners state they are returning,” Craig said. “It is a nice change of pace from what is otherwise a very flat course and runners really enjoy the crowds at the top of the hill cheering them on. When we were looking at making changes to the course (reducing the number of turns and making it 100% paved) we knew that we had to keep Salina's Locally Famous Hill or returning runners would be very disappointed.”

This year the Salina Crossroads Marathon will need more than 300 volunteers. Volunteers can sign up for the Salina Crossroads Marathon at <a href="https://salinacrossroadsmarathon.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=81121">https://salinacrossroadsmarathon.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?id=81121</a>. Volunteer needs include course monitors, finish line and festival, and packet pickup.

Course Monitors will ensure safety along the run course by assisting traffic across intersections, providing pedestrians/runners with course direction, and encouraging participants along the course. 

Festival volunteers will be placed in various areas around the finish line area and assist with the removal of timing chips, handing out participant finisher medals, distributing participant food/beverage items, and cleaning &amp; maintaining a green event.

 There are shifts on Friday (Nov 1) from 10:00a.m.-8:00p.m. and Saturday morning (Nov 2) starting at 6:00 a.m. for packet pickup that includes assigning runners their bib number and getting them their race shirt.

 "Volunteers are what separate the very best marathons from other races. We were blown away by both the number of individuals who volunteered for last year's race as well as their passion and commitment to ensuring that every runner had an amazing experience. We often highlight the number of participants and the economic impact that races have, but the volunteerism aspect is equally important to local communities like Salina," Craig said.&nbsp;

The marathon weekend kicks off on Friday, November 1, 2024, with packet pickup at the Homewood Suites by Hilton from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, November 2, late registration and packet pickup will continue from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. at the Salina Fieldhouse followed by the National Anthem and announcements at 7:50 a.m.

The marathon, half-marathon, full relay, and half relay races will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m., with the 5K Fun Run/Walk starting shortly after at 8:10 a.m. Awards ceremonies will take place throughout the day, beginning with the 5K awards at 9:00 a.m. at the City Lights Stage. The half-marathon and half relay awards will be presented at 10:45 a.m., and the Kid’s Half-Mile Race will begin at 11:15 a.m. The marathon and full relay awards ceremony will conclude the day at 12:15 p.m., with the race course officially closing at 2:00 p.m.

Timing and results for all races will be available on the marathon’s official website at <a href="http://www.runsalinacrossroads.com">www.runsalinacrossroads.com</a>. While results will not be posted at the finish line, laptops will be available for runners to check their times.

The awards ceremony will take place at the City Lights Stage, where only the overall winners of the full marathon, half marathon, and relay races will be announced. Age group winners and Kid’s race winners can pick up their awards at the Crossroads Tent following their race.

This year, the top three male and female runners in both the marathon and half marathon will receive cash prizes of $250, $150, and $100, respectively. Additionally, the top three male and female finishers in each age group will be recognized, with categories ranging from 19 and under to 80 and above. Relay teams and 5K participants will also have opportunities to claim top honors in their respective categories. For the Kid’s Half-Mile Race, every year will have its own age category to ensure fair competition.

For spectators, there are several excellent locations along the course. Popular spots include the Homewood Suites at miles 0.5/3.5 and 13.6/16.6, which is within walking distance of the start and finish line. Tony’s Pizza Events Center provides great views of the race at miles 4.5/5.5 and 17.6/18.6, with access via Midway Road. The Indian Rock area, accessible from Iron Avenue via Indiana or Wisconsin Road, offers views at miles 6-7 and 19-20.

Lakewood Park, located at miles 11 and 24, is another prime viewing area with access from Iron Avenue.

Spectators are encouraged to remain inside the course loop and use Iron Avenue and Ohio Street for easy navigation, though crossing the race route before 10 a.m. may result in delays.

 </figure>By SALINA POSTThe Salina Crossroads Marathon has seen a significant surge in participation this year, with more than 5,200 runners registered for the 2024 race set for Nov. 2.&nbsp; Co-Race Director Daniel Craig said this year’s impressive number of runners dwarfs the 817 participants the race saw in 2022. The growth of the event is largely attributed to the dedication of more than 25 committee members, the hospitality of Salina residents, and the race layout. Craig noted that many participants return to the race for the challenge of the hill on the marathon course. Some runners switch from the half marathon to the full marathon to tackle the hill twice. The course’s mix of flatness and beautiful scenery has turned the Salina Crossroads Marathon into a key attraction for runners from across the region. The marathon also serves as a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon."We have seen an increase from 3,400 registered runners last year at this time to over 5,015 as of today. Most if not all of that success can be credited to Salina's Locally Famous Hill which is runner's favorite part of the race and a key reason that runners state they are returning,” Craig said. “It is a nice change of pace from what is otherwise a very flat course and runners really enjoy the crowds at the top of the hill cheering them on. When we were looking at making changes to the course (reducing the number of turns and making it 100% paved) we knew that we had to keep Salina's Locally Famous Hill or returning runners would be very disappointed.”<figure>

Volunteer needs include course monitors, finish line and festival, and packet pickup. Festival volunteers will be placed in various areas around the finish line area and assist with the removal of timing chips, handing out participant finisher medals, distributing participant food/beverage items, and cleaning &amp; maintaining a green event. There are shifts on Friday (Nov 1) from 10:00a.m.-8:00p.m. and Saturday morning (Nov 2) starting at 6:00 a.m. for packet pickup that includes assigning runners their bib number and getting them their race shirt. "Volunteers are what separate the very best marathons from other races. We were blown away by both the number of individuals who volunteered for last year's race as well as their passion and commitment to ensuring that every runner had an amazing experience. KANcycle, the regional bike-share program, is offering free rides throughout Mobility Week using the promo code “MobWeek24.” The code is available for all locations in the KANcycle service area, providing residents with an easy way to participate in the week’s events.

Kansas celebrates 4th Annual Mobility Week, Nov. 3-9

If there is one place where Americans and Kansans find common ground, it is accountability.&nbsp;&nbsp;

When candidate-speak is unaccountable, when fact-checkers can’t keep up, in the face of cascading catastrophic issues, when one side says this and the other that, well--hell, yes!&nbsp;&nbsp;We want accountability.&nbsp;&nbsp;And truth.&nbsp;&nbsp;

So, why is it that Kansas’ monopoly party slavishly reinforces faulty facts/perceptions, or worse yet simply refuses to show up at election time?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Absence from Kansas debates looks at first like a troubling infection, but examined more closely, it’s a pandemic.

To say they are following Trump is almost cliché.&nbsp;&nbsp;We need not document his many no-shows.&nbsp;&nbsp;But whether it’s copycatism or just arrogance, this campaign tactic has trickled, or cascaded, down to Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In Salina, JR Claeys, our Saline/Dickinson County 24th District Senator who also runs/manages/consults Trump’s campaign and many others, has followed suit. Who is the ONLY candidate who refused to appear or even send a statement, for the League of Women Voters forum?&nbsp;&nbsp;Claeys.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

But his refusal’s arguable effect on Salina history is even more disturbing.&nbsp;&nbsp;For more than a half century, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and the League of Women Voters have co-hosted pre-election candidate forums.&nbsp;&nbsp;This year, the forum was planned as usual.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Suddenly, the Chamber withdrew.&nbsp;&nbsp;No longer did it feel responsible to offer the public an examination of candidates. The Chamber had “received …. concerns regarding [League] partisanship.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Their “community partners” made it clear “that there is a perception in the community that the League is a partisan organization.”&nbsp;&nbsp;So, they decided to “protect [their] reputation as non-partisan.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Who, it might be asked, is partisan here? An organization that wants the public to be informed, or one that doesn’t?&nbsp;&nbsp;

It’s nearly impossible to avoid the echo Chamber’s language regarding the League of Women Voters as a ‘partisan organization.’&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In 2016, only slightly more ridiculously, now-Kansas-Attorney-General Kris Kobach, infamously conferred the label “communist League of Women Voters.”

After 50 years, why the Chamber’s change of mind—and heart?

The same question might apply in another Senator’s campaign, that of Larry Alley in Senate Disrict 32 Cowley County.When pressed in an earlier debate about his votes on Medicaid expansion, women’s reproductive health, and tax issues—votes that some argued were against the best interests of his constituents—Alley said he would answer questions in a second debate but refused to appear on stage with his opponent, Lawrence Moreno.

<a href="https://www.ctnewsonline.com/news/article_445841e8-8c57-11ef-8d11-67fae60217fd.html">Faced with that reality, the local Optimist Club and Chamber of Commerce abruptly cancelled, citing ‘lack of volunteers.”</a>

The U.S. House race for District one is also instructive.&nbsp;&nbsp;Incumbent Tracey Mann of Salina was approached on numerous occasions by broadcast outlets, Chambers of Commerce, and women’s groups, with no response except ‘schedule conflicts.’&nbsp;&nbsp;

The requests:&nbsp;&nbsp;August 17, Douglas County Women For Kansas; September 16, Hutchinson Women for Kansas; October 8 or 14, Hays Chamber and FHSU; Oct 21 or 22, WIBW TV; October 11, 23, or 24, KSAL Salina.&nbsp;&nbsp;In all cases, either no response or ‘schedule conflict.’&nbsp;&nbsp;

Most interestingly, says Democratic candidate Paul Buskirk, “The Douglas County W4K, after no response, saw that Mann was appearing just a few miles away in a nearby town the day before their requested debate.&nbsp;&nbsp;They went.&nbsp;&nbsp;Asking him directly why he’d not responded and renewing their request, Mann told them that he visited each county only once in a given year.”

The brick wall of no-shows is not limited to more rural areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;In Kansas’ largest city, Mary Knecht, League of Women Voters Wichita-Metro member, relates their experience.&nbsp; 

“Candidates who refused the invitation to participate in a forum for the November 2024 election were Ron Estes, Ty Masterson, and Dan Hawkins.” In other words, both another U.S. House member (Estes) and the leaders of both Kansas Senate and House.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Why do these public servants feel no responsibility to their public?

In Claeys’ case, he has steered dollars and grants to the downtown TIF district, K-State Salina Aviation program, the Airport Authority, the new federal-grant-supported housing project, in which the Senator is rumored to have a financial interest, and others.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Money talks. Where Claeys goes, bucks bellow.&nbsp;&nbsp;

As a VP of Axiom strategies, he manages or ‘consults with’ his and numerous other election races--<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/5ee12ffcebfb13423b277290">including Donald Trump and Kris Kobach</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;All races famous for their blizzards of last-minute postcards against opponents, most filled with unsubstantiated accusations.

Axiom’s profits also come from the ballot initiatives like the $2 million KC Chiefs’ proposed new stadium. Dollars paid stayed--with Axiom.

Besides his legislative salary, <a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/10/19/kansas-lawmakers-on-track-for-hefty-salary-increases-in-2025/">due to double next year</a>, Kris Kobach hired his former campaign manager and spokesperson as <a href="https://www.cjonline.com/story/news/politics/elections/2023/01/12/kansas-lawmaker-to-advise-kris-kobach-remain-in-state-legislature/69799613007/">‘Senior Advisor,’</a> at over $75,000 a year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

What really costs us, however, are not his salaries, but his influence.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“One hundred percent of his contributions came from PACs, corporations or other types of businesses.” His fund-raisers are held in well-heeled<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2023/06/04/where-did-kansas-state-senators-campaign-funds-come-from-the-answers-might-surprise-you/"> Kansas City and Wichita at hundreds to thousands a plate</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Under these circumstances, why talk to constituents at their doors, to the public at a League of Women Voters debate, or even/especially to the press?&nbsp;&nbsp;

Salina press uniformly reports non-response.&nbsp;&nbsp;Nathan King, Salina Post says, “I called 4 different phone numbers repeatedly asking for response.&nbsp;&nbsp;Got nothing.” 

To confirm, I personally emailed Claeys and left voicemail asking for response.&nbsp;&nbsp;I, too, got nothing.&nbsp;&nbsp;

So, did Claeys’ Trump our Chamber of Commerce? Or vice versa?

Either way, the public is robbed of its right to truth.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Unaccountably.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lori Berezovsky of the Salina Public Library is the recipient of the 2024 John Philip Excellence in Outreach Award.&nbsp; The award is given to an individual in recognition of their outstanding contributions and prominent leadership to the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services. The 2024 award is sponsored by LDV Custom Specialty Vehicles.

"Lori is an advocate for access to library services through outreach. Her commitment to serving seniors and homebound patrons has been a boon to our community," said Salina Public Library Assistant Director Amy Adams.

Lori has been engaged in outreach services for 28 of the 30 years while at Salina Public Library, Salina, Kansas. Armed with a van and a lot of ideas, she strengthened outreach services in Salina and built relationships and trust between the library and community members. 

In addition, she served local community organizations, such as the Salina Adult Education Center and the Volunteer Connection. She presents at state library conferences on outreach and community engagement and is persistent in sharing about ABOS.

Lori strengthened ABOS on an international level by promoting ABOS through international communications and connecting with international bookmobile drivers. After two years of virtual conferences, Lori led the Board and the Conference Planning Committee in organizing the first in-person conference in Scottsdale, AZ which saw the highest conference attendance in ABOS history. 

As Past President, Lori served on the Strategic Planning, the Conference Planning, and the Nominations Committees and continues to serve in various roles.

The John Philip Excellence in Outreach Award was presented in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 16, 2024 during the 2024 Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services Annual Conference.

<a href="https://youtu.be/V6q46furWPc" target="_blank">In this video</a>, K-State Research and Extension cow-calf specialist Jason Warner discusses safety considerations when making a decision to allow cows to graze sorghum residue after harvest.

“The quantity and quality of (sorghum) residue is the highest it is going to be immediately following harvest,” Warner said.

He said that K-State research indicates that in most situations, there should be enough dry matter residue from the grain sorghum harvest to support one non-lactating cow for 50 to 60 days per acre.

Producers often are concerned, however, about nitrate toxicity and prussic acid toxicity, which can cause a form of asphyxiation – or oxygen loss – to the animal. Both conditions are more common in years when crops are drought-stressed, according to Warner.

“With nitrate toxicity, nitrates will accumulate in the bottom one-third of the stock, or stem,” he said. “So, always remember that we don’t want to force those animals to graze down into the lower one-third of the stock by leaving them on those residue fields longer.”

Prussic acid may accumulate in the upper portions of the residue. Warner notes that producers can reduce the risk of prussic acid poisoning by avoiding grazing just prior to a killing freeze, when the plant is still actively growing.

Salina Arts and Humanities Salina Arts &amp; Humanities Executive Director Brad Anderson reported to the Salina City Commission on October 14, highlighting Salina's position as a leader in performing and visual arts, art education, and cultural arts administration. During the Study Session, Anderson emphasized the positive economic impact of the city's largest arts and culture organizations on the local economy.

Economic Impact of the Arts in Salina

Anderson noted that while quality of life is a key factor, the arts have a significant economic footprint.&nbsp;Seven&nbsp;of Salina’s&nbsp;largest arts organizations employ 71 full-time and 160 part-time workers, with more than 250,000 visitors annually, half of whom travel from outside Saline County. Beyond event admissions, these visitors contributed an estimated $11.4 million in additional spending on hotels, retail, dining, gasoline, and childcare. The City of Salina provides in-kind support to some organizations&nbsp;as well asfinancial assistance through the Transient Guest Tax, illustrating the return on investment for local arts funding.

Private support plays a vital role in sustaining Salina's arts scene. Anderson highlighted events like the Boom! Salina Street Art and Mural Festival and SculptureTour Salina, which not only elevate the city's profile but also engage residents and attract visitors. Private donors and foundations contributed $4.8 million to the arts last year, with an additional $5.2 million earned through revenue.

The report also contextualized Salina's arts impact on a national scale. Anderson shared the arts—including nonprofit, commercial, and educational sectors—constitute 4.3% of the U.S. GDP, comparable to transportation, construction, and agriculture. Additionally, half of the local survey respondents reported that they would have traveled to another city to attend a similar arts or culture activity if it wasn’t available locally, indicating the importance of local arts in retaining economic activity.

Arts &amp; Humanities Education Coordinator Sarah Keck reported high interest and robust support for arts education. The Arts Infusion program, funded in part by USD 305, serves pre-K through 12th grade. Many artworks were privately funded and are now displayed in accessible public spaces, enhancing the city’s cultural landscape.

In addition to traditional arts venues, institutions like the Rolling Hills Zoo and The Garage broaden the community's cultural offerings. Anderson emphasized that the range and quality of Salina's arts experiences are comparable to cities three times its size, providing affordable cultural opportunities for residents.

Resource Partner and Advocacy Initiatives

Most voters make their decisions for various unreflective reasons; engaging in a prolonged internal struggle over whether or not to support any particular candidate, especially a candidate nominated by a party which the voter identifies with, just isn’t typical behavior.

Donald Trump, though, has never been a typical candidate; he’s always been a contentious one. There is less talk today of “Never Trumpers,” as many of those Republicans who opposed Trump’s rise to dominance within the GOP have left the party. But not all have—even in Kansas, a state that gave Trump 56% of the popular vote in 2016 and 2020, and will likely do so again.

Given that Kansas Republicans have historically divided into moderate and conservative factions, perhaps the fact that there remains a small but persistent number of Republicans who still reject Trump’s control over the GOP isn’t surprising. Stephanie Sharp, a Republican who served three terms in the Kansas House, is one of the prime movers behind&nbsp;<a href="https://www.women4us.org/">Women 4 U.S.</a>, a national organization of self-identifying conservative women working against Trump’s return to the White House. Steven Howe, current Republican member of the Kansas House, condemned Trump’s “<a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/33c904d2-daa4-4be1-9579-7144c08488a5">deceit and lies</a>” and plead with his own party to turn away from their support for the former president. And then there is U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, the only one of the Republicans which Kansans have elected to Congress who has&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascity.com/opinion/readers-opinion/guest-commentary/article292202050.html">declined to endorse Trump</a>&nbsp;for president. While he’s never directly condemned Trump either, this is a man who, if you’ve&nbsp;<a href="https://inmedias.blogspot.com/2019/03/a-tale-of-two-congressmen-with-10-point.html">paid attention to his speeches over the years</a>, clearly has little respect for the leader of his own party.

I also have to include here a deeply conservative friend of mine, a life-long Republican voter who finds Trump’s dismissive attitude towards both the law and the truth utterly disqualifying, despite mostly agreeing with Trump on matters of policy.

He, like those mentioned above, knows that his opposition won’t significantly affect voting results in Kansas; it’s a given that Kansas’s electoral college votes will go to Donald Trump.

But what will that result have on the longstanding divide within Kansas’s dominant political party? All political parties deal with internal divisions over policy priorities, but a rejection of the person who leads the party itself? The Bernie Sanders faction of the Democratic party, despite its grievances, made its peace with and supported both Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, and is set to do the same for Kamala Harris, whereas the absence of any Trump-critical Republicans from the current GOP campaign—from Mitt Romney to Lynn Cheney to Mike Pence--suggests a division quite unlike the divides Kansas Republican faced over Governor Brownback, for example.

I think of another friend, a smart and passionate GOP volunteer, who is entirely on board with the MAGA line: that Trump won the election in 2020, and that Trump’s actions to challenge being denied his supposed win were justified, despite the violence involved. Assuming neither of my friends change their minds, how can their party accommodate such a stark division?

Perhaps by just ignoring it? (It’s notable that Rep. Howe has faced no intra-party challenge in his re-election race). Or if Trump loses, maybe find common ground by treating the past decade as just a strange, rough patch in party history, something that historians will have to figure out?

Neither of those options will be available if Trump wins, or just refuses once again to accept his loss. So long a Trump’s presence endures, I would anticipate that a small but persistent fracture will remain in our state Republican politics. Who knows how long it will take for it to heal then?

INSIGHT KANSAS:  Kansas Republicans and the problem of Donald Trump

 </figure>By STEVEN HOWE State Representative (R-71st District) The United States of America is a land full of second chances. It is a land of refuge and opportunity, a land of redemption. We have a constitution that helps secure the rights of the people, and among those precious rights is freedom of speech - which means even criticizing elected officials like myself or former President Trump. The checks and balances that our founders framed for us are beautifully made for freedom loving people. Earlier this year I wrote an Op-Ed very critical of former President Trump and the events that led up to January 6, 2021. In my column I took the former President to task for his repeated and false claims that the 2020 election was “stolen” and the events leading up to January 6. Also in the op-ed, in light of this year’s Kansas presidential preference primary I stated, “.....I will not vote for him a third time in 2024.” When the op-ed was published in January there were approximately 10 Republicans up for the nomination. I was hopeful that a potentially younger conservative candidate would help the Republican Party move forward. By the time the Kansas presidential preference primary rolled around on March 19th, everyone had dropped out or suspended their campaigns, and President Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee on March 12.For the past seven months I have observed, and have contemplated deeply about the choices before us. To say a lot has changed in that time is an understatement. Yesterday I got in line to advance vote, and I cast my vote for Donald J. Trump for President. Although I have my own personal reservations, I believe he has the superior executive leadership experience to lead our country for the next four years.I do not consider my vote to be a blank check for anyone. I will continue to engage and be a civil voice within the Republican Party, and work to bring people together to get things done.Whether it is eliminating the state income tax on social security benefits or eliminating the state sales tax on food, there is common ground that has been achieved because Republicans and Democrats were willing to work together. Let’s hope Kansas can be a model for what is possible at the national level - Ad Astra Per Aspera- To the Stars Through Difficulties.Steven K.
