MANHATTAN – Kansas farmers seem to be positioned for a bounce-back in net farm income as 2024 rolls along, according to a report from Kansas State University farm management economist Gregg Ibendahl.

And while, technically, that is good news, it is tempered by the fact that Kansas farmers are coming off one of the toughest years in about a decade. K-State reported earlier this year that 2023 net farm income in the state was, on average, $89,667 – about 56% below the year before.

But in his most recent analysis of 500 grain farms in the&nbsp;<a href="https://agmanager.info/kfma">Kansas Farm Management Association’s database</a>, Ibendahl says “I’m predicting a 23% to 30% increase in net farm income” in 2024 for Kansas farms.

“But that’s really from a very low base to start with, so overall, net farm income is going to be below what it has been for the previous 5-6 years.”

In pure numbers, Kansas farms may see 2024 net farm income hit an average $118,000, according to Ibendahl. In central and western Kansas, those numbers may top $156,000 and $149,000, respectively; net farm income in the east, however, may slow to $72,336 – the only region in the state that won’t see a rise compared to 2023.

Signs are mixed for 2025, he said. Average net farm income in the state may be just below his forecast for 2024, though slightly higher in the west and east and slightly lower in the central region.

“Remember that 2022 was a very good year in Kansas,” Ibendahl said. “Farmers were experiencing very good grain prices and everything looked pretty good. There was quite a bit of crop insurance that helped net farm income that year.”

“But in 2023, we had a case where grain prices dropped, which contributed to lower farm income and farm revenue. We also had a case where we had a big drop in inventory values for the stored grain that farmers had at the end of 2022, because of lower grain prices.”

Poor growing conditions in parts of Kansas also caused a dip in 2023’s grain revenue numbers, Ibendahl said. Crop insurance helped to pull many farmers from bigger losses, in many cases.

In 2024, Ibendahl said, “grain prices haven’t improved a whole lot; they’re still down from what they were a couple years ago. But we’re not going to see the big drop in inventory like we did in 2023, so that factor alone will help the revenue side.” He also doesn’t expect U.S. farmers to receive the level of government assistance that they have in recent years.

Longer term, ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and other parts of the world threaten oil prices, which in turn affects fertilizer prices. Ibendahl also keeps a watchful on inflation and interest rates, and knows that adverse weather will negatively affect production.

“Last year, we had 30% of our farms that had negative farm income,” Ibendahl said. “This year, that may jump to as much as 35% even though I’m looking at a slight increase in net farm income. What that means is that maybe more than one-third of our farms have the potential to have negative net farm income in 2024.”

“You can’t go too many years and have negative net farm income and expect to remain a farmer. So that’s something to look at going forward.”

The Kansas Department of Insurance is available to help residents with questions about their insurance coverage or to assist with any issues they may have with their insurance companies. Residents can reach them at 800.432.2484.

&nbsp;Evergy crews have restored more than 95% of customers who lost power when Wednesday’s severe storms rolled through our service area. About 4,500 customers remain without power as of 10:00 a.m. These are customers in communities that had the most severe damage from the storm, which brought wind speeds as high as 90+ mph.&nbsp;&nbsp;

About 350 line workers from neighboring utilities are joining the 1,100 Evergy personnel working to clear trees and make repairs. Neighboring utilities in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri and Iowa are providing assistance. Crews will continue working until all power is restored.&nbsp;

The hardest hit areas included Salina, Topeka, Lawrence and the Kansas City metro. The storm took down more than 100 power poles in the Topeka and Salina areas, as well as multiple transmission lines near Salina that help deliver power across long distances. Those transmission lines are repaired and back in service. &nbsp;

Most remaining Evergy customers in the Topeka and Salina areas will have power restored today. Some outages may stretch into Saturday afternoon. In Lawrence and the Kansas City metro area, storm restoration is expected to be complete this evening. &nbsp;

We urge customers to be aware of heat safety and consider seeking out their nearest cooling shelters or other locations with air conditioning. Customers can call 2-1-1 to find cooling shelters or contact their city or county officials.&nbsp;

Evergy restores more than 95% of outages from storm that brought 90 mph winds 

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."

In 1916, Salina Boosters, a group dedicated to promoting Salina that eventually joined forces with the Salina Chamber of Commerce, organized a submission contest for the best slogan. The group had plans to build an arch and put the selected slogan on the arch. The winner was to receive a prize of $10. Over 250 slogans were submitted including:

The Metropolis of the Smoky Valley

The slogan selected was “Salina, Your Opportunity.” The sign was erected at 12th and Bishop Streets near Union Station. It was equipped for illumination with 1200 colorful bulbs. The sign was powered by Salina Power and Gas Company. The first time it was illuminated was Saturday, March 17, 1917 at dusk.

Hundreds of Salinans gathered at the Union Station grounds to see the sign illuminate for the first time. There were also plans to replicate the sign to put more in the downtown area. 

More lighted arched signs did not come to fruition; however, the sign became a popular landmark in Salina.

This iconic sign was used for many years to come – the 1943 City Directory described the slogan: 

“Salina’s slogan, Your Opportunity, typifies the commercial phase of life in Salina, for there is indeed a splendid opportunity for all who are seeking a location in which to work and prosper.”

 While it was torn down in 1954, the Smoky Hill Museum had a replica made specifically for its gallery.

 </figure>In 1916, Salina Boosters, a group dedicated to promoting Salina that eventually joined forces with the Salina Chamber of Commerce, organized a submission contest for the best slogan. The group had plans to build an arch and put the selected slogan on the arch. The winner was to receive a prize of $10. Over 250 slogans were submitted including:The Gateway to an EmpireHub of the PrairiesHeart of the Wheat BeltPortal of ProsperityBuckle on the Golden BeltThe Metropolis of the Smoky ValleyThe slogan selected was “Salina, Your Opportunity.” The sign was erected at 12th and Bishop Streets near Union Station. It was equipped for illumination with 1200 colorful bulbs. The sign was powered by Salina Power and Gas Company. The first time it was illuminated was Saturday, March 17, 1917 at dusk.<figure>

 </figure>Hundreds of Salinans gathered at the Union Station grounds to see the sign illuminate for the first time. There were also plans to replicate the sign to put more in the downtown area. More lighted arched signs did not come to fruition; however, the sign became a popular landmark in Salina.<figure>

 </figure>This iconic sign was used for many years to come – the 1943 City Directory described the slogan: “Salina’s slogan, Your Opportunity, typifies the commercial phase of life in Salina, for there is indeed a splendid opportunity for all who are seeking a location in which to work and prosper.” While it was torn down in 1954, the Smoky Hill Museum had a replica made specifically for its gallery.

Unpredictable weather, equipment breakdowns and technology issues are part of the deal for the custom harvesting crews that traverse the Great Plains each summer chasing the next field ready to cut. Recently released by Fort Hays State University’s Tiger Media Network, the student documentary “Life on the Harvest Run” captures the story of two Kansas-based custom crews, the frustrations they face and whether or not the next generation is willing to take on those challenges.&nbsp;

“The harvest life is so spontaneous and so not planned from day to day,” custom harvest crew member Rebecca Froese said during the film. “There's a lot of adverse and strange conditions that throw themselves at us in harvest - rain, equipment breakdowns, you name it.”&nbsp;

Custom harvesters travel the country each summer to harvest crops for farmers or businesses that may not own the necessary large-scale or specialized equipment needed for harvesting or for producers facing time constraints during the busy fieldwork season. The work of these crews helps ensure crops are harvested efficiently and effectively.&nbsp;

“With harvesting, you’ve got to be crazy to be doing it,” said Brad Befort, a custom harvester, during the film. “It's almost like you're just a little boy that's grown up and you're playing with bigger toys in the sandbox than you did when you were little.”

The film focuses on two family operations - Brad Befort Harvesting in Hays and Froese Brothers Inc. in Inman. To produce the documentary, three FHSU students - Ryan Schuckman, Raegan Neufeld and John Billinger - interviewed active and retired custom harvesters from 20 to 91 years old to get a mix of present and past perspectives on the unique job.&nbsp;

“One goal of Tiger Media Network is to give students a look into what the real-world working environment might be,” said Nick Schwien, director of TMN. “We want our FHSU students to stand out to potential employers when they apply for jobs post-graduation. Experiences like this fit perfectly into the Department of Informatics approach to preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s workforce.”

More than just a student project, “Life on the Harvest Run” captures the spirit and camaraderie of a family tradition filled with challenges and triumphs. This behind-the-scenes view of custom harvest crews also shares an important perspective on what it takes to get wheat from a farmer’s field to a consumer’s plate.&nbsp;

“Not only are we learning how to work as a team, but we’re also learning about events and history we wouldn't have known otherwise,” Billinger said in the release. “It helps preserve their stories and experiences for generations to come.”

Wheat Scoop: Student documentary captures custom harvester lifestyle

The National Weather Service in Wichita issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Saline County, which expired at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 31.

&nbsp;A powerful thunderstorm swept through Salina on Wednesday night, causing significant disruptions and leaving 17,000+ residents in Salina without power.&nbsp;

The storm, characterized by intense lightning, heavy rainfall, loud thunder, and high winds struck the city around 9:20 p.m. leading to widespread tree damage and power outages in several neighborhoods.

According to Evergy’s outage map power is estimated to be restored at approximately 11 p.m. on July 31. Many residents remained without power into the city early hours of Aug. 1.

“There is a lot of debris in the roadways,” said Saline County Emergency Management Director Michelle Weis. “Motorists will experience intersections without signs or power to street lights, and debris in the roadways.”

Weis reminds drivers that if they come to an intersection without operating street lights, to treat it as a four-way stop.&nbsp; The NWS reminds residents to stay indoors and avoid any downed power lines. Exercise caution and avoid flooded areas.

The Saline County Commission has issued a verbal state of disaster emergency proclamation.

Weis reminds residents that if they have tree debris down and it is completely blocking the roadway call the Salina Police Department at:&nbsp;(785) 826-7210&nbsp;and Road and Bridge will send someone out to remove that debris.

Weis also said that if you have tree limbs or debris that has severely damaged your roof or home, i.e. a massive tree limb that has punctured through your roof, etc. please call the Salina Police Department as well.

Once Salina Road and Bridge completes its work of opening all roads, it will begin collecting all minor limbs down on sidewalks, smaller tree limbs on the sides of streets, etc.&nbsp;

Severe Thunderstorm Warning including Salina KS, Assaria KS and  Gypsum KS until 10:15 PM CDT. This storm will contain wind gusts to 70 MPH.

At 7:18 PM CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located near Salina, moving east at 40 mph. The storm is producing hazardous conditions, including wind gusts of 70 mph and penny size hail. At 7:15 PM CDT, a 74 mph wind gust was reported at Salina Regional Airport. 

Hazard:70 mph wind gusts and penny size hail.

Impact: Expect considerable tree damage. Damage is likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

Locations impacted include: Salina, Gypsum, Brookville, Smolan, New Cambria, Glendale, Salina Airport, and Kipp.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for southwestern Republic County and Cloud County in north-central Kansas, effective until 6:45 PM

A severe thunderstorm was located 5 miles north of Glasco, moving east at 30 mph. The storm poses a significant threat with tennis ball size hail and wind gusts up to 70 mph.

Impact: People and animals outdoors are at risk of injury. Expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. Considerable tree damage is anticipated, and wind damage is also likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

Locations impacted include: Concordia, Glasco, Jamestown, and Aurora.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning remains in effect until 6:30 PM CDT for Mitchell, southern Jewell, southeastern Smith, and northeastern Osborne counties.

At 5:55 PM CDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from 7 miles northwest of Ionia to near Cawker City, moving southeast at 45 mph.

Hazard:60 mph wind gusts and half dollar size hail.

Impact: Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

These severe storms will be near:- Cawker City, Glen Elder, and Ionia around 6:00 PM CDT and Beloit around 6:15 PM CDT.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>The storm, characterized by intense lightning, heavy rainfall, loud thunder, and high winds struck the city around 9:20 p.m. leading to widespread tree damage and power outages in several neighborhoods.<figure>

 </figure>According to Evergy’s outage map power is estimated to be restored at approximately 11 p.m. on July 31. Many residents remained without power into the city early hours of Aug. 1.“There is a lot of debris in the roadways,” said Saline County Emergency Management Director Michelle Weis. “Motorists will experience intersections without signs or power to street lights, and debris in the roadways.”<figure>

 </figure>The Saline County Commission has issued a verbal state of disaster emergency proclamation.Weis reminds residents that if they have tree debris down and it is completely blocking the roadway call the Salina Police Department at:&nbsp;(785) 826-7210&nbsp;and Road and Bridge will send someone out to remove that debris.<figure>

As summer storms and other weather events increase the risk of power outages, Lisa Newman, family and community wellness extension agent, encourages you to keep these crucial tips close for keeping food safe when the lights go out. 

Understanding how to handle food during an outage can protect you and your family from foodborne illness. 

Keep an Appliance Thermometer: Ensure your refrigerator and freezer have thermometers. This way, you can check if the temperature has remained safe during a power outage. The safe temperature for a refrigerator is 40 degrees or below, and for a freezer, it is 0 degrees or below.

Keep Appliances Closed During Power Outage: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends keeping refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. A refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours if unopened, and a full freezer will maintain its temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if half-full.)

Check Each Item After Power Outage: Discard refrigerated perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers after 4 hours without power. Food may be safely refrozen if it still contains ice crystals or is at 40°F (4°C) or below, however, its quality may suffer. Never taste food to determine its safety.

When in Doubt, Throw it Out: If you’re unsure about any food item’s safety, it’s better to dispose of it. The risk of foodborne illness is too high to take chances.

Clean and Disinfect: Once power is restored, clean and disinfect your refrigerator and freezer before restocking them with fresh food. This step will ensure that any bacteria that might have grown during the outage are eliminated.

Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo second night results

While communities nationwide are brainstorming ideas to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, Abilene is kicking off the effort by creating Kansas’ first America 250 mural.

The Abilene Celebrates America 250 Mural Project aims to honor America's founding and military history while fostering civic pride. Located on a prominent wall above VFW Post #3279, overlooking Little Ike Park in historic downtown Abilene, the mural is set to become a destination as the country prepares to celebrate in 2026.

The mural is a collaborative effort between the Community Foundation of Dickinson County, Abilene VFW Post #3279, Abilene Chapter NSDAR, NSDAR America 250! Celebration Grant, and the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“The Community Foundation of Dickinson County is proud to support this effort to bring more art to Abilene and celebrate our country’s founding,” said Elizabeth Weese, Community Foundation of Dickinson County director.

The mural will be painted by Mindy Allen of Mindy's Murals, the same artist slated to complete the Eisenhower Foundation’s mural on the Bert &amp; Wetta silo this fall.

“The VFW is excited to add a mural to its building,” said Bill Marshall, VFW post member. “The mural will feature all of the military branches and the Betsy Ross flag signifying the 13 original colonies.”

According to Allen, work is scheduled to begin next week.

“DAR is a women's service organization dedicated honoring the patriots of the Revolutionary War,” said Dee Marshall, Abilene Chapter NSDAR Regent. “We hope this project is the first of many that will showcase our patriotism and promote Abilene as a Best Historic Small Town.”

In Ohio, the America 250-Ohio Commission announced they are seeking locations across the state to paint barns commemorating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. The first barn was completed in June 2024. In Kansas, the Semiquincentennial Commission is established, though no celebration plans have been made public.

SALINE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 9:30p.m. Wednesday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2025 Freightliner semi driven by Jeffrey E.&nbsp;Womack, 49, Colt, Arkansas, was northbound on Interstate 135 at the Kansas 140 Junction during a severe thunderstorm when the wind blew the vehicle over.

EMS transported&nbsp; a passenger Jeffrey E. Womack, Jr. 32, Colt, Arkansas, to Salina Regional Health Center. The driver was not injured. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.
