Lindsborg getting new fitness center

&nbsp;As grasses within a pasture mature, various physical changes occur, which impact the cattle grazing them. For instance, older plants dry out and lose nutritional value, but also develop coarse stems – making cattle more susceptible to injuries involving their face and eyes.

<a href="https://ksubci.org/2024/07/26/heat-feeding-risk-management-facial-diseases-cull-criteria/" target="_blank">On a recent episode of the Cattle Chat podcast</a>, Kansas State University veterinarians recommend producers watch for lumpy jaw and wooden tongue as their pastures start getting “stemmy.”

“Green, growing grass isn’t likely to cause these problems,” said K-State veterinarian Bob

Larson. “Lumpy jaw and wooden tongue happen when the tissues of the mouth are damaged on rough textured forages.”

In the case of wooden tongue, damaging incidents to the mouth allow for germs that live within the animal to cause an infection.

“It’s not really something that cattle get from other cattle. It’s caused by bacteria that are normally in the mouth and throat area,” Larson said.

K-State veterinarian Brad White adds: “Coarse feeds and grasses can damage the mucous membranes and cause lesions.”

Cattle with wooden tongue display obvious physical symptoms, according to Larson and White.

“Their tongue gets large and tends to hang out of their mouth, making eating difficult. They look like they are panting or drooling,” Larson said.

“It gets stiff, swollen and painful,” White said. “You do not very often see an animal – a cow especially – sticking their tongue out of their mouth; they’re not doing it to play. They are doing it because their tongue won't go back in.”

Like wooden tongue, cattle contract lumpy jaw through the bacteria that inhabit their mouths.

“After an injury, (bacteria) gets into some of the other tissues of the mouth,” Larson said. “What's dangerous about that one is it can invade bone. If that happens, it becomes difficult to cure.”

Larson said when producers discover lumpy jaw and wooden tongue in their earlier stages, cattle have a better chance of recovering.

“A lot of times these cases will be treated intravenously,” he said. “This is pretty effective at bringing those two syndromes back to normal but contact your local veterinarian before making any treatment decisions.”

When examining an animal’s mouth and face for lumpy jaw and wooden tongue, Larson suggests that producers monitor the eyes as well for squamous cell carcinoma, or cancer eye.

If this affliction goes untreated, cattle may face the same fate as their lumpy jaw and wooden tongue-infected counterparts.

“Cattle can get a cancer of the eye – often in their third eyelid. If you treat it early with surgical removal of that area, those animals respond well and can go ahead and have multiple years of productive life after that,” Larson said.

However, “If that cancer spreads and it involves the bones of the head, that is not going to get better, and it is time to think about euthanasia just from an animal welfare standpoint.”

If you enjoy gardening, learning, and giving back as a volunteer, consider becoming an Extension Master Gardener in 2024.&nbsp; Central Kansas District K-State Research and Extension will be offering the 2024 Master Gardener Basic Training Course&nbsp;starting September 5.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Classes begin&nbsp;September 5 and will run each&nbsp;Thursday through December 5.&nbsp; This training will be held in a hybrid format online through zoom and will also include 5 in-person training days.&nbsp; Topics covered include: plant growth and development, soils, insects, diseases, pollinators, landscape maintenance, vegetables, growing fruit, turf management, native plants and biodiversity, annual and perennial flowers, and more.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Master Gardeners are K-State Research &amp; Extension volunteers who enjoy cultivating their own plants and gardens while sharing their skills and knowledge with the community around them to help others grow.&nbsp; Volunteering as an Extension Master Gardener is a wonderful way to enrich your life and the lives of others.

The decision to become a Master Gardener can be very rewarding.&nbsp; It is a decision to take your horticulture knowledge to the next level and it is a commitment to find creative ways to make a difference in our community while sharing that knowledge with the people and places around you.

Training is just one great benefit.&nbsp; Master Gardeners receive a 40-hour-plus horticulture training course from K-State Extension specialists and county Extension agents.&nbsp; The basic training provides a great starting point for those new to gardening, but is also in depth enough to apply to gardeners of any skill level.&nbsp; Other benefits of being a Master Gardener include the camaraderie of people who share similar passions, receiving ongoing horticulture training and support through K-State Research and Extension, and other local horticulture opportunities.

Once training is complete, Master Gardeners are encouraged to take their knowledge out to the community to share it with others in unique and meaningful ways.&nbsp; First year Master Gardeners volunteer 30 hours of time and during succeeding years have a commitment of just 20 hours to remain active.

Master Gardener volunteer time can be selected from current Master Gardener projects and can also be tailored to individual abilities and interests.&nbsp; Master Gardeners are encouraged to find their creativity in looking for ways to impact the community.&nbsp; A few activities many Master Gardeners enjoy volunteering on include: &nbsp;the demonstration garden, community gardens, county fairs, and educational garden tours and events.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued an Excessive Heat Watch for portions of Central, South Central, and Southeast Kansas.

Cities included: Augusta, Harper, Strong City, Madison, Fredonia, Valley Center, Lincoln, Cottonwood Falls, Chanute, Salina, McPherson, Sylvan Grove, Iola, Anthony, Peabody, Grenola, Bel Aire, Attica, Arkansas City, Ellsworth, Andover, Sedan, Great Bend, El Dorado, Humboldt, Moline, Newton, Howard, Cedar Vale, Russell, Coffeyville, Hillsboro, Hutchinson, Independence, Lyons, Neodesha, Marion, Winfield, Parsons, Derby, Wichita, Wilson, Sterling, Rose Hill, Yates Center, Eureka, Kingman, Wellington, Longton, Park City, and Haysville. The Women of Achievement (WOA) committee is excited to announce their upcoming event honoring some of Salina’s most impactful leaders.

“We are excited to announce this year’s honorees,” said Event Co-Chair, Amanda Littell. 

This year’s event will be held Thursday, November 7 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Theatre Salina. The evening will include a program showcasing this year’s honorees and a reception in the lobby of Theatre Salina. All funds raised will go towards the YWCA Legacy Fund held at the Greater Salina Community Foundation.

“At this particular moment in history, women’s leadership is on display, and we are proud to continue to recognize and honor the women in our own community who have had and continue to have an impact in our community.” Colleen Marrs, Event Co-Chair added “It is so important we continue to honor the legacy and further the mission of the YWCA by raising money for the YW Legacy Fund. The fund has granted over $400,000 to local agencies and programs supporting women and children since 2007.”

The ‘Love, Kansas’ campaign is a talent attraction initiative of the Kansas Department of Commerce and Salina has been chosen, along with 18 other communities throughout the state, to participate.&nbsp; The&nbsp;campaign aims to boost Kansas’ population by inviting past residents to return home to live and work.

The launch party will be a grassroots effort to allow current residents to physically send invitations to family and friends who lived in Salina at some point but are now living out-of-state.&nbsp;

Notecards with stamped envelopes will be provided. Residents are encouraged to stop by and write as many invitations&nbsp;as they’d like.&nbsp; Refreshments will be served and those who participate can enter to win a special prize&nbsp;drawing that includes Smoky Hill Silver gift certificates and a Love Salina t-shirt.

“This is really intended to be a true letter-writing campaign,” Renee Duxler, president and CEO of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce said, “We all know how special a hand-written note is in this day and age and it just might be that personal and heartfelt invitation that causes someone to re-consider Salina.”

The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) will hold a virtual meeting on Aug. 1 beginning at 8 a.m. to discuss Evergy’s plans for future transmission projects.

The costs of transmission projects are passed on to ratepayers in the form of a transmission delivery charge (TDC), which appears on monthly electric bills. Viola Ruth Elizabeth (Roy) Ricks will celebrate her 100th birthday on August 2, 2024. She was born on August 2, 1924, to Dona and Nathalie Roy on a farm near Webster, Kansas. Viola was the eldest among her nine siblings, namely , Eugene, Orville, Clifford, Laverne, Donna, Albert, Shirley, Norma, and Stanley. Unfortunately, her sister Shirley passed away at the age of 4.&nbsp;

On January 30, 1944, Viola married Julian Estus Ricks in Salina, Kansas. At the time, Viola was pursuing her education at Brown Mackie College, while Julian was serving in the Air Force at Schilling Air Force Base.&nbsp;

Following their marriage, they relocated to several different states before settling down in Texas due to Julian's employment. Viola dedicated many years to childcare in Arlington, Texas before retiring. Her interests included gardening, ceramics, and cherished moments spent with loved ones. Traveling the world brought her immense joy, having visited all of the states within the United States, as well as countries like Italy and France.&nbsp;

Viola and Julian are proud parents to five children: Jerry, Larry, Joyce, Janice, and Julie. Their family has grown to include 16 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Currently, Viola resides in Salina, Kansas, with her youngest daughter Julie and son-in-law Dayle. Despite her age, she continues to enjoy trips to Branson with her sister and sisters-in-law.

One thing she consistently prays to God for is to be a good person and show kindness to others.

Salinan celebrates 100th Birthday on Aug. 2

On Sunday evening, July 28, a 46-year-old woman from Salina called the Salina Police Department (SPD) and reported that someone she knew had harmed her during a domestic dispute.

On Sunday at approximately 8 p.m., SPD officers responded to a domestic disturbance call near Ohio and Magnolia Streets. When officers arrived, they found a 46-year-old woman from Salina in the parking lot of Scooters on Ohio Street. 

"She indicated that she got into a domestic at a residence in the 2300 block of Aurora Avenue with someone she's involved with,” said SPD Captain James Feldman. "The victim said that when he [suspect] attempted to leave in a vehicle, she attempted to stop him. She was partially in the vehicle and out of the vehicle."

The male driver and suspect, later identified as Troy Zelfer, 35-year-old of Salina, drove off as the woman victim's leg hung outside of the front passenger side of the vehicle. Zelfer drove the vehicle, dragging the victim's leg for approximately two-tenths of a mile.

"He pulled away with her half in half out, dragging her for a short distance. She did have injuries and abrasions on her right leg and left arm," Feldman said.

Zelfer then drove the vehicle to the Scooters Coffee parking lot, 2055 S Ohio Street, before he left the vehicle and the woman behind. He then walked to the nearby Kwik Shop, where officers apprehended him without incident.

&nbsp;Zelfer faces multiple charges, including aggravated battery and driving with a suspended license. Additionally, he was found to have two outstanding warrants for failure to appear in court. 

He was booked into the Saline County Jail.

I admit it, I am a political junkie, and I have not been able to stop listening to the radio, watching the TV or reading about recent events, all of which can be best described as unprecedented. They are coming fast and furious. I told someone the other day it was like coming up to a wreck on interstate and not wanting to look but not being able to stop myself from looking. All I can say is the election isn’t here yet, so you better buckle up and expect the unexpected.

Speaking of the elections the candidate endorsements by Kansas Farm Bureau’s (KFB) own Voters Organized to Elect Farm Bureau Friends, or VOTE are out. The endorsements are based off candidates’ understanding of agriculture and KFB policy, along with recommendations from members across the state who know the candidates best. The VOTE FBF board met and discussed every candidate running for state or federal legislature before endorsing candidates.

These endorsements are earned, not given. In most cases, candidates have been active in either attending county Farm Bureau events or at least reaching out and communicating with the Farm Bureaus in their district.

If you look at the list, you will also notice both Republicans and Democrats are endorsed. Kansas Farm Bureau is a bipartisan organization, and we work with legislators from both sides of the aisle, therefore party affiliation isn’t one of the metrics VOTE FBF considers when evaluating candidates.

I encourage everyone to look at the list of endorsed candidates and consider voting for them. It is important that we elect officials who understand the risks and rewards of growing food and how government actions can help or hinder our work. I am sure you have heard many, many times that we are less than 2 percent of the population, and it is important that we work to elect legislators who understand agriculture. Endorsements can be found at www.kfb.org/VOTEFBF.

Beyond that, I encourage all of you to exercise your right and vote in the upcoming primary and general elections. Our great nation depends on participation from all citizens in the process of selecting our government. I also encourage each of you to do your homework and really understand just who it is you are voting for. Also remember districts have changed, so find a map and know what district you are in.

I would hope you also take interest in the local races for county commission or bond issues for schools. Often those decisions have just as much or in some cases more sway over your everyday lives.

The bottom line is casting a ballot is not something we should take for granted. There are many places in the world that do not have that ability. So please, wade through all the rhetoric, hype and sensationalism and get out and vote for the candidates who best represent your beliefs.

SALINA —Just before 10 p.m. Monday, the Kansas Highway Patrol made a DUI arrest on Interstate 135 just south of Salina, according to a social media report from Trooper Ben Gardner. 

The vehicle was observed speeding and failing to maintain its lane. During the traffic stop, signs of impairment were noted. The driver submitted to a preliminary breath test (PBT), revealing a blood alcohol level of .261—over three times the legal limit of .08 for individuals 21 years and older.

Saline County Jail Bookings, July 30

By Taylor Jamison, K-State Research and Extension Just as humans crave a cold drink during the sweltering heat of the summer, the same holds true for dogs and cats. Kansas State University animal nutrition expert Greg Aldrich says that water needs can increase for pets during the summer months.

“If the temperature gets relatively hot, above 86 degrees Fahrenheit, pets will need more water,” Aldrich said.

While there is not much scientific data available on how seasonal water intake differs, Aldrich said in general, pets should be drinking 50-60 milliliters water per kilogram of bodyweight.

“So, a 10 kilogram dog (22 pounds) would need 500-600 milliliters (1/2 to 2/3 quarts) water,” Aldrich said. “Under higher temperatures, water intake will increase by 6-10 milliliter per 1 degree centigrade. So, in round figures, that’s another 10% water per day when the temperatures go over 30 C (86 F).”

Aldrich said a general rule is to simply provide a constant supply of drinking water.

According to Aldrich, signs of dehydration may include:

Pet owners witnessing any of these symptoms should provide water immediately and seek help from a veterinarian.

Regarding food intake, Aldrich says pets housed outdoors may actually have a decrease in appetite.

“It is not uncommon that food intake will decline 10% or more, and that dogs may still gain weight during the hotter months,” he said. “They will likely lose these pounds during the cooler winter months.”

Even if the pet is housed outdoors, food should be kept in a cool, dry place. Aldrich emphasized the importance of providing shade and good ventilation for pets during the harsh summer months.

Kansas State University animal nutrition expert Greg Aldrich says that water needs can increase for pets during the summer months.“If the temperature gets relatively hot, above 86 degrees Fahrenheit, pets will need more water,” Aldrich said.While there is not much scientific data available on how seasonal water intake differs, Aldrich said in general, pets should be drinking 50-60 milliliters water per kilogram of bodyweight.“So, a 10 kilogram dog (22 pounds) would need 500-600 milliliters (1/2 to 2/3 quarts) water,” Aldrich said. “Under higher temperatures, water intake will increase by 6-10 milliliter per 1 degree centigrade. So, in round figures, that’s another 10% water per day when the temperatures go over 30 C (86 F).”Aldrich said a general rule is to simply provide a constant supply of drinking water.According to Aldrich, signs of dehydration may include:●Loss of skin elasticity●Decrease in saliva production●Loss of appetite●Limited urination and defecation.. ●Difficulty with balance and coordinationPet owners witnessing any of these symptoms should provide water immediately and seek help from a veterinarian.Regarding food intake, Aldrich says pets housed outdoors may actually have a decrease in appetite.“It is not uncommon that food intake will decline 10% or more, and that dogs may still gain weight during the hotter months,” he said. “They will likely lose these pounds during the cooler winter months.”Even if the pet is housed outdoors, food should be kept in a cool, dry place. Aldrich emphasized the importance of providing shade and good ventilation for pets during the harsh summer months.

KSRE: Pet owners should monitor food and water intake

SALINE COUNTY —A Kansas man was injured in an accident just after 10:30a.m. Monday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2012 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp;Ronnie Lee Hamby, Jr., 46, Ellsworth, was westbound on Interstate 70 just west of Hedville Road. The sem rear-ended a 2022 Peterbilt semi driven by&nbsp;&nbsp;Yaotzhin Daniel&nbsp; Ramirez-Montante,&nbsp; 35, Temixco, Mexico.

EMS transported Hamby to Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ramirez-Montante was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The crash temporarily closed westbound traffic on the Interstate for a couple of hours.

SALINE COUNTY —According to KanDrive, westbound lanes of Interstate 70 are now open. A two vehicle crash on Monday morning temporarily closed both lanes just west of the Hedville-Culver exit.

SALINE COUNTY —All westbound traffic on Interstate 70 in Saline County is currently shut down due to a two-vehicle semi crash just west of the Hedville-Culver exit 244, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

All westbound traffic will be required to exit at the 244 exit and will be guided north to an alternate route.

Kan. man hospitalized in Salina after semi rear-ends a semi

Event organizers are well aware of the impact that speakers have for those attending their particular conference.

That’s why the committee for the upcoming Eucharistic Conference in Hays chose an A-list of speakers for the conference, which promises to deepen attendees’ understanding and devotion to the Eucharist.

The list of speakers is headlined by a dynamic young bishop and other popular clergy members from around the diocese and beyond.

The conference, sponsored by Fort Hays State University’s Comeau Catholic Campus Center, is scheduled for Aug. 9-10 on the FHSU campus.

Bishop Joseph Espaillat, at 47 years of age the youngest bishop in the United States, will serve as the keynote speaker twice—on Friday night’s opening session and again on Saturday morning.

Attendees will even have a third time to hear from Bishop Joseph as he will be the homilist for Saturday’s outdoor Mass set for 5:15 p.m. on the FHSU Quad.

One Hays woman was so invigorated with Bishop Joseph’s homily at the closing Mass of the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, last fall that she jumped at the chance for all her children to hear him.

Brenda Rose, who attended the NCYC with her oldest daughter, Hannah, will be attending a cousin’s wedding in Nebraska on Saturday.

When she learned that Bishop Joseph would be she signed up her entire family for Friday evening’s sessions at the Eucharistic Conference.

“I remember watching Bishop Joseph throughout Eucharistic Adoration at NCYC, and I had never seen a priest or bishop who came so alive as he led us in adoration. His energy was contagious,” Rose said. “We didn’t learn until later that he was a bishop, and we were captivated by him during his homily. It was like he was one us, speaking directly to us and telling us exactly what all of us as Catholics need to hear.”

Several clergy and parishioners from the Salina Diocese are attending this weekend’s National Eucharist Congress in Indianapolis, the first of its kind in 83 years.

Bill Meagher, director of youth ministry, religious education and family life for the Salina Diocese, said Bishop Gerald Vincke wanted to host a conference closer to home, so soon after they returned from NCYC, plans began for making that happen. And Bishop Gerald quickly added Bishop Joseph to the list of speakers.

Father Andy Hammeke, pastor of FHSU’s Catholic Campus Center and co-vocational director for the Salina Diocese, also had a desire to bring an opportunity like this to FHSU students.

“We are really grateful for Fr. Andy and the Fort Hays students for opening up this conference to everyone in the diocese,” Meagher said.

Fr. Andy said that the bishops of the United States “decided to put on the event (in Indianapolis) in an effort to bolster Eucharistic Devotion in our country.”

“Not everybody in our diocese was able to attend, so we are honored to host our own Eucharistic Conference on the campus of Fort Hays State University,” Fr. Andy said. “We hope this will be an opportunity for people from all over Kansas and the surrounding states to increase their devotion to our Lord in the Eucharist.”

The conference will begin with registration from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in Sheridan Hall, followed by the opening session featuring Bishop Joseph in Sheridan’s Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center.

The evening will conclude with Adoration Under the Stars in the FHSU Quad. The next morning will feature another outdoor session with a 7 a.m. rosary at the grotto on the campus of Thomas More Prep-Marian Junior-Senior High School.

Following Bishop Joseph’s keynote session at 8:45, a variety of breakout sessions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. will cover topics such as Eucharist Adoration, understanding young people and leadership for teens, and our call to serve.

Bishop Vincke and Meagher want to point out that attending even parts of the conference will have an impact.

“Don’t let the fact that you can’t make it on Friday evening or must leave early on Saturday stop you from attending,” Meagher said. “We are excited to have you join us for whatever parts you can.”

They also stressed that anyone can attend the 5:15 p.m. Saturday Mass in the Quad.

“You do not need to register for the conference to participate in the closing Mass,” Meagher said. “Everyone is invited. You will just need to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.”

The Mass will be live streamed into Beach/Schmidt for those who have difficulty with heat or accessibility at the Quad.

“Things have become so confusing and uncertain in our world right now, and I think people are hungry for good, positive, direct messages,” Rose said. “They will get that here at this conference, and we are blessed to have this opportunity right here in our area.”

Father Gale Hammerschmidt will be joined by Sister Amy Marie Havlet as master of ceremonies.

Fr. Gale is well-known—and well-liked—around the state. He grew up in Hays and is now pastor at St. Isidore Parish on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan. Sr. Amy Marie is the vocation director for the Diocese of Lincoln.

The list of speakers also includes Bishop Gerald and Father Jarett Konrade, who served as pastor of St. Nicholas of Myra parish in Hays for several years and now is pastor of St. John the Baptist parish in Beloit.
