Relay For Life raises critical funds for cancer research, patient support programs, and advocacy efforts. Every team, every participant, and every fundraiser helps advance the American Cancer Society’s mission to end cancer as we know it, for everyone.

About Relay For Life

In May 1985, Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, raising money to help the American Cancer Society with the nation’s biggest health concern: cancer.

Friends, family, and patients watched and supported him as he walked and ran more than 83.6 miles and raised $27,000 through pledges to help save lives from cancer.

From there, Relay For Life has transformed into a worldwide symbol of hope, remembrance, and collective determination. Currently, 1,200 Relay For Life events take place in over 35 countries and have raised $7 billion since 1985, according to Santa Clara Magazine.
