CoCoRaHS 24-hour rain totals

The Kansas Sampler Foundation, in collaboration with the Blue Rapids Round Town Square Festival, will host the first Big Kansas Road Trip Pop Up on Saturday Aug. 24 in Blue Rapids.&nbsp;

The pop-up event is the first of its kind, a one-day experience for Kansas Explorers to get to know the community of Blue Rapids by celebrating one of its most famous features - a town square in the shape of a circle, known locally as “the squircle.”&nbsp;

“What better way to experience this landmark than to roll around it?” said Marci Penner, co-director of the Kansas Sampler Foundation. “We’re inviting explorers to get out and take a few laps on roller skates, bicycles, scooters, or those riding in strollers, wagons or wheelchairs to enjoy this historic feature.”

The Kansas Sampler Foundation created the Big Kansas Road Trip&nbsp;six years ago to provide the public firsthand experiences in rural communities and to give these cities a chance to showcase who they are and what they have. The one-day event in Blue Rapids is the first of a series of “pop-up” events designed to help more Kansans experience and enjoy the state.

Attendees of the event will have special access to ride, roll, or walk around the round town square beginning at 10 a.m. The day will celebrate all things that are round in the area -&nbsp; including a round trip on the Central Branch Railroad, visiting a round barn, learning about a historic baseball game played between major league teams in 1913, and visiting Alcove Spring to learn about the wagon trains that frequented this spot.&nbsp;

The event is open to the public with a special invitation to members of the Kansas Explorers Club, also organized by the Kansas Sampler Foundation. An Explorer Club meeting featuring Kansas trivia led by Marci Penner from the stump will take place at 10:30 in the round town square. Passports to inspire and guide explorers can be downloaded from the Big Kansas Road Trip site to plan the day in advance, or picked up between 10-11 a.m. at the Kansas Sampler Foundation table in the town square.

Blue Rapids is located in Marshall County, 12 miles south of the county seat of Marysville. Explorers are invited to experience the city’s Round Town Square Festival throughout the day in downtown Blue Rapids. The event, organized by the Blue Rapids Community Action Team with support from many community organizations and businesses, will include a locally sourced fish fry and beer garden, a craft fair, bouncy houses, and live music from Eric Johanson, sponsored by the Marshall County Arts Cooperative.

“Blue Rapids comes together in many ways throughout the year to build community,” said Sarah Green, Kansas Sampler Foundation co-director. “We’re grateful for their invitation to join them for a full, fun day in their historic city.”

The Kansas Sampler Foundation’s mission is to preserve and sustain rural culture. For over 30 years, members of the Inman-based non-profit Kansas Explorers Club have explored and appreciated rural communities across the state and had fun doing it.

Big Kansas Road Trip rolls into Blue Rapids, Aug. 24 

At least that’s the case for the 2024 Miss Rodeo Kansas State Queen Jordan Daugherty.

The K-State student, an Army brat, spent her high school years living in New York City, and now she’s been crowned the rodeo queen for K-State.

The daughter of Aaron and Eryn Freese, she and her family lived in Lawton, Okla., Alexandria, Va., and upstate New York before her parents landed on Staten Island in NYC for four years.

At age eight, she started riding horses, English style, working in a barn. Family finances were limited, so for every hour she cleaned stalls, she got $10 credit towards riding lessons.

Then, on Staten Island, she volunteered with a therapeutic riding group, just to be around horses.

A barrel racer from New Jersey’s Cowtown Rodeo saw her ride and mentioned that Jordan should try barrel racing. “You’re a heck of a rider,” she told Jordan. But Jordan didn’t own a horse, and wasn’t even of driving age yet.

In 2020, she bought her first horse, and began running barrels. At the time, she was an undergrad student at Iowa State University in Ames, graduating two years later with a biology degree.

Jordan is currently studying for her doctor of veterinary medicine degree at K-State. She chose K-State because of the friendliness of its people.

“K-State was the most personal, the most welcoming,” she said. “It felt so much like a family, and that they actually care about each individual student, and that’s where I wanted to be.”

At K-State, she is part of the college rodeo team, competing in the barrel racing and breakaway roping. She doesn’t have the advantage of having competed in rodeo from a young age, like a lot of rodeo contestants.

“It’s intimidating, to come into college rodeo with a green-broke horse, when you’ve only done this for four years and they’ve done it their entire life.” But she’s made friends and enjoys it. “I’ve learned so much, being around these other people who have rodeoed their entire life. I love it.”

Jordan has participated in college rodeo for the last two years. She’s “made” – trained -&nbsp; her own barrel horse and breakaway horse, and hopes to qualify for the College National Finals Rodeo before her collegiate career is over.

At K-State, she is in the Health Professions Scholarship Program, a competitive scholarship she was granted. After graduation in May 2026, she will be active duty as a military veterinarian. She may be stationed at a deployable unit, caring for working military animals like dogs and horses, or on a nondeployable unit, caring for military families’ pets.

She didn’t think she could ever win a rodeo queen title. “I thought, (being a rodeo queen) is cool, but isn’t this for people who have ranches back home? You go to these rodeos, and you see these girls, and you think it’s cool, but you don’t think it’s for you.”

When she was crowned in March of this year, she was thrilled. “Wouldn’t it be cool if I talked to a little girl, tell her my story, and she says, maybe I can do that. Maybe my story will change somebody else’s mind, that this is possible.”

Jordan will be at the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo in Abilene July 30-August 2. She will ride in the parade on July 30, make an appearance at the Abilene Public Library on July 30 at 10 am, sign autographs on August 1 at Holm Automotive from 10:30-12 noon, and sign autographs following each night of rodeo.

The rodeo will be held July 30-August 2, with shows each night at 7:30 pm.

Tickets are $12 for adults in advance and $15 at the gate. Children’s tickets (ages 4-10) are $8.&nbsp;&nbsp;

From NYC to Kansas — Abilene rodeo hosts Miss Rodeo K-State

&nbsp;Technology is ever-present in our world, from cars that warn us when we accidentally drift lanes to watches that monitor our biometrics. Many would agree that these technologies offer beneficial information that keeps us safe and healthy.

Much like these monitoring systems, there are also advancements in home technologies that can improve our efficiency, especially when it comes to reducing water use, said Sedgwick County extension horticulture agent Matthew McKernan.

“There are a lot of water-saving technologies available to the public, such as high-efficiency washing machines and dishwashers,” McKernan said.

He also encourages homeowners to consider installing low-flow sinks and showerheads as well as water-conserving toilets to further reduce household water usage.

For people who pay for water that is sourced through the city or rural water district, that can mean financial savings said McKernan.

Along with exploring new technologies, McKernan said it is also important for homeowners to evaluate the current systems and fix any leaks that are found. And for those who are ready to make home improvements to improve water efficiency, McKernan said people should check to see if funding is available.

“Oftentimes, municipalities will incentivize replacing these indoor and even outdoor water-saving technologies through rebate programs to help people conserve water to benefit the entire community,” McKernan said.

In the past, those interested in conserving water outdoors often set up rain barrels to collect rainwater, and while that can still be an option for folks, McKernan said today there are outdoor watering systems with sensors that can be helpful in using water strategically.

“Two of the technologies that can be used outdoors are rain sensors that will prevent irrigation systems from watering when it is not needed, as well as smart irrigation controller technologies that base the irrigation schedules on weather data and landscape conditions, such as soil moisture, to address the water needs of the plants,” McKernan said.

As with monitoring the house for leaky faucets, McKernan reminds consumers that irrigation systems should also be routinely evaluated.

“It is easy for an irrigation head to get hit by a mower and break off, and if problems go unnoticed, we could have leaks and be wasting water,” McKernan said.

He encourages all Kansans to do their part in helping to conserve water.

“Unfortunately, the Earth’s water is a limited resource and that is not something people always think about when they turn on the faucet or hose, but small changes in how we manage the water can lead to a big impact,” McKernan said.

Before my family and I moved to Kansas, 18 years ago next month, I didn’t consider summer my favorite season. As a perpetual student and then a college professor, summer vacations were obviously a nice break, and of course summer activities were fun. But compared with flowers in the spring, foliage in the fall, and snow in the winter, summer just didn’t impress me.

The Sunflower state changed that. People complain about the heat, humidity, and wind but I found it all quite wonderful. Getting on my bike and hitting the long, straight county roads, looking across golden wheat fields and rolling green pastures towards a broad and blue horizon, with sunflowers along the way—it was beautiful, and made me a firm fan of Kansas summers.

That did involve some adjustments, though. For example: when are the lazy “dog days” of summer? As a scholar of politics as well as a fan of the season, this actually mattered to me.

Growing up in Washington state, August was the tired, tail-end of summer, the time when everyone mentally checked out, and I carried that assumption into my professional life. Living and studying in Washington DC, August was so disregarded by many who worked there that there were humorous&nbsp;<a href="https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2010/08/august-let-s-get-rid-of-it.html">calls to abolish it</a>. August was when the parties and agencies mopped up unfinished business, if they worked at all, just waiting for politics to re-ignite in the fall.

But in Kansas, whose approach to the calendar had historically followed agricultural patterns distinct from what I knew as a child and student, things were different. With the wheat harvest complete before the end of July, schools and governments looked to August as the time to get back into a normal routine. And so, as the years have gone by, I’ve had to accustom myself to treating late July, rather than August, as the time to truly tune out and reset one’s internal clock.

I was thinking about this while speaking to a local political group just last week. I was surrounded by older folks, who’d dedicated years—decades really--of their lives to understanding and promoting the causes and candidates they believed in. One might imagine these folks would be, like me on these hot, late July days, taking it easy. But no—they were fired up, anxious and ready and engaged, filled with questions and challenges and concerns.

Their attitude surprised me, though it shouldn’t have. In a single week they, like all of us, had seen the attempted assassination of one presidential candidate and the withdrawal of another. Far from the summer political calendar closing its eyes and taking a nap, suddenly everything was turbo-charged and dramatic, the news terrible and shocking and inspiring and unexpected. As I commented to some other news junkies, upon my second late-night visit to a local television station in a little over a week, it’s not supposed to be like this until after Labor Day!

Well, so much for those expectations. July is rushing into August and beyond at breakneck speed, with primary elections and brokered conventions looming across the nation, some of whose consequences might well affect even the most local legislative races across our state.

In a political culture supposedly built upon democratic debate, with people taking the time to test different political options carefully, that kind of speed isn’t good. But unless we can all learn to turn off our phones and trust that not everything always needs to be treated as a desperate emergency, we’ll have to make the best of our hurried reality, applying whatever limited breaks we can find occasionally. Summer’s still here, but maybe not the dog days of old, unfortunately.

Saline County Jail Bookings, July 27

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."

Amid World War II, a significant transformation occurred in Saline County, Kansas, with the establishment of Camp Phillips, a World War II Army post that played a pivotal role in the war effort.

In May 1942, the federal government requisitioned over 45,000 acres of farmland in Saline County to construct Camp Phillips, displacing 300 families. 

Verna Brax Smith, a resident affected by the condemnation, recounted the challenges faced by these families: "We had 15 days, that was our notice... we couldn’t move during the day... the roads were packed with big machinery."

Architectural planning and preliminary survey work for Camp Phillips began on May 12, 1942, with actual construction starting on May 29.

 By December 31, 1942, the construction was completed, and the facility was officially handed over to the Army engineers on January 30, 1943. The camp covered 69 square miles and included facilities for 36,027 troops. It featured a 1,726-bed hospital, chapels, recreation buildings, troop housing, firing ranges, obstacle courses, movie theaters, and a replica German village. 

Additionally, a prisoner-of-war camp housed over 1,000 German and Italian soldiers.

The first troop train arrived at Camp Phillips on September 24, 1942, and the Salina Cantonment was officially named Camp Phillips on October 6.

 By November 20, the 94th Infantry Division had partially arrived. Troops typically trained at Camp Phillips for six months before moving to other locations or overseas.

The camp hosted four infantry divisions and 19 non-divisional units, including the 94th, 80th, 79th, and 44th Infantry Divisions, which were all assigned to the European theater.

Camp Phillips was deactivated on October 27, 1944. The dismantling of the camp began in June 1945, with many buildings repurposed for civilian use. By 1946, 440 barracks had been shipped to universities for temporary student housing.

Today, the Smoky Hill Weapons Range occupies part of the former Camp Phillips site. Of the original 44,090 acres, 32,000 acres remain under the control of the War Department.

 </figure><h2>Operations and Training</h2>The first troop train arrived at Camp Phillips on September 24, 1942, and the Salina Cantonment was officially named Camp Phillips on October 6. By November 20, the 94th Infantry Division had partially arrived. Troops typically trained at Camp Phillips for six months before moving to other locations or overseas.The camp hosted four infantry divisions and 19 non-divisional units, including the 94th, 80th, 79th, and 44th Infantry Divisions, which were all assigned to the European theater.<figure>

 </figure><h2>Deactivation and Aftermath</h2>Camp Phillips was deactivated on October 27, 1944. The dismantling of the camp began in June 1945, with many buildings repurposed for civilian use. By 1946, 440 barracks had been shipped to universities for temporary student housing.Today, the Smoky Hill Weapons Range occupies part of the former Camp Phillips site. Of the original 44,090 acres, 32,000 acres remain under the control of the War Department.

The transformer was then taken into a wooded area near the business and disassembled in an effort to remove copper wiring from inside the transformer. Total loss was valued at $1,200.

Why are you running for Saline County Commission?

I believe that I can help make a difference in Saline County by continuing to bring the county up to date in its infrastructure and processes.

What are your top three priorities if elected?

Assure that all employees and constituents who enter into a County Department are in a safe place. Assure that employment in Saline County is competitive, thus enabling the County to attract enough qualified candidates. Achieving the first two goals through the use of grants, Star Bonds, or other available federal or state funds so as to keep taxpayer expense in Saline County at or below the current level.

What is your long-term vision for Saline County?

My long-term vision is to continue to bring Saline County up to the expected standards of the 21st century.

What one part of county government would receive more attention if you were elected?

Do you plan to promote any changes to existing taxes? If so, why?

What are the county's most pressing needs for infrastructure or capital projects?

To provide a safe and healthy building for every department of Saline County.

What is your stance on affordable housing?

Saline County has a responsibility to preserve rural farmland as it is written in our policies. I believe that it is the responsibility of the city, the county, and the businesses which bring in multiple new employees to assure the existence of affordable housing.

What is your stance on mitigating and preventing homelessness?

I believe that we have a crisis in this country, which often stems from mental health issues that help cause homelessness. Until and unless those issues are fully addressed, we will continue to have those problems. That said, I do what I can to volunteer and to donate items to various social programs in Saline County. I do not believe that mandating the general population to care for their fellow man is the answer.

What is your experience with preparing or authorizing budgets?

I have worked with budgets in public schools, in businesses, and have assisted with budgets for three departments of Saline County.

If new resources were available, what one area of county services would you feel most needs additional resources?

On this question, I am torn. I see a need for more in the Health Department, in Road &amp; Bridge, in the County Attorney’s Office, and perhaps in salaries overall.

Should any part of the county budget be shielded from cuts? And if so, which area?

Are county taxes too high, about right, or pleasantly low?

I believe that county taxes are currently at the level they need to be at.

The Environmental Health Department helps assure water quality in rural Saline County. I believe that they operate very well.

I believe that I am the best candidate for the job because I worked collaboratively with so many different departments during the time that I was in Planning &amp; Zoning.

A program to help people in every Kansas county improve their access to nutritious foods will be hosting a two-day meeting in Wichita to connect communities with similar food issues.

The first-ever&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/kansaslocalfoods/local-food-summit/">Kansas Local Food Summit</a>&nbsp;is scheduled for Aug. 27-28 at the&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasleadershipcenter.org/">Kansas Leadership Center</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://kansashealth.org/">Kansas Health Foundation</a>&nbsp;in downtown Wichita.

Rebecca McMahon, administrator of the Local Food System program at Kansas State University, said the summit will allow people from communities across the state to learn what is working in other Kansas communities.

“It’s about giving communities across the state what they need to ensure that they have resilient farms, healthy people and vibrant economies,” McMahon said.

At the time, McMahon noted: “In a state that prides itself on feeding the world, we currently struggle to adequately feed and nourish our own residents.”In the nearly 18 months since receiving the grant, K-State’s Local Food System team has conducted roundtable discussions in 11 communities, asking Kansans what they think is needed to overcome challenges in their local food systems.The Kansas Local Food Summit will help to bring all of that knowledge together for the benefit of people who perceive gaps in their community’s local food system.“Each community has its own unique opportunities and challenges, but we can make more progress when we learn together what works best for the people of Kansas,” McMahon said. “The summit will have lots of opportunities for networking and collaborative learning, as well as great speakers. Building a stronger network of people across the state is the first step towards more resilient local food systems.”Numerous breakout sessions are planned to help bring Kansans together under common themes, including Farm to School, food access, food hubs, and more. Michelle Coats at OOCK and Daniel Craig with Tammy Walker Cancer Center will lead two of these breakout sessions.The keynote speakers for the summit are:John Wittler, executive director of the Ogallala Commons, who will speak on how to effectively coordinate the value chain for the benefit of the food system.Mary Hendrickson, director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Food Security at the University of Missouri, who will speak on how to build a resilient food system in the face of consolidation.McMahon said the Kansas Local Food Summit is open to anyone interested in attending, but will be particularly beneficial to those who support local food system growth, including producers, consumers, food policy council members, government agency workers, non-profit organizations, food businesses and others.
