According to the Salina Police Department, officers arrested Matthew Hewitt (43) who was connected to the three burglaries that occurred on December 19.

Prior to the arrest, SPD developed Hewitt as the possible suspect to these burglaries. Officers on Christmas Eve located Hewitt at the Value Inn on 1640 W. Crawford. When officers arrived they discovered Hewitt was inside the hotel room with a female identified as Mindy Burr (51).

Officers made announcements that Hewitt was under arrest and that all occupants needed to exit the room. However, there was no response and a negotiator from SPD made contact with Hewitt by phone.

During the phonecall, Hewitt stated he was armed and that "officers should not come inside room if they want to make it Christmas."

Afterwards, Hewitt started to exit the room but failed to comply with the officer's attempt to arrest. A K9 was then released and bit him. Hewitt was then taken into custody and transported to Salina Regional Health Center for minor injuries.

Burr was also arrested on the scene and booked into the Saline County Jail for the requested charges of Felony Interference with Law Enforcement and Harboring a Subject with a warrant.

A search warrant was then conducted inside the hotel room and a AR rifle, items from the Boy Scouts of America, along with several items were recovered.

Hewitt was booked for requested charges of Burglary (more pending), Interference with Law Enforcement, Criminal Use of a Firearm and Criminal Threat.

He also had a federal warrant for Probation violation for Firearms Violation that was issued by the US Marshals Service.

Hewitt is expected to have more requested charges, as he is suspected to be connected to the slew of burglaries that happened in downtown Salina on the end of November.
