Despite the sorghum harvest in Kansas beginning to wind down, the Sorghum Connection Series remains committed to empowering the state's sorghum industry.

This innovative program, launched in September by the Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission (KGSC) in collaboration with K-State Research and Extension and the K-State Department of Plant Pathology, announces a comprehensive winter educational program.

Building on the success of its inaugural field day series, which focused on stalk rot prevention and producer profitability, the Sorghum Connection team offers an additional series of one-day events across central and western Kansas. These events will delve deeper into key topics gained from the field days. These events will be held in Salina on December 4, Hays on December 5, and Garden City on December 6.

Attendees will gain valuable insights from leaders at Kansas State University on critical topics:

Incumbent Republican State Representative for Kansas' 69th House District, Clarke Sanders, secured another two years in office on Nov. 5, winning with 58% of the vote. Sanders expressed satisfaction with both the outcome and the overall tone of the campaign, describing it as “conducted very above board.”

"It went really well for me, but I thought the campaign, for the most part, was conducted very above board, and I was pleased with the tenor of the campaign and obviously pleased with the outcome," said Sanders.

The 2024 Nov. General Election wasn't just a great night for Sanders —Kansas Republicans took home a slate of victories in the <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/a2335adb-6f3d-4672-b9ac-a2410b5a539e">Senate and the State House of Representatives</a>.

“We have more of a mandate to get done what Republicans in the statehouse have been trying to do,” Sanders said.

In the Kansas Senate, Republicans hold a significant majority, with 30 confirmed Republican seats and potentially 31, depending on the results of a close race in District 5. This increased from the previous session's 29 Republicans, where only 26 Republican representatives consistently voted with the Kansas Republicans on major issues.

In the Kansas House, Republicans have expanded their majority from 85 to at least 88 seats, with a possible 89th seat pending in the Kansas House District 49. Previously, the House had 85 Republicans, with a few members occasionally siding with Gov. Kelly. Republicans now hold a stronger supermajority, giving them more than the 87 votes required to override a veto.

Sanders echoed remarks by Kansas Speaker of the House Dan Hawkins criticizing Gov. Kelly for her efforts to break the Republican-held supermajority in Topeka.

"The Governor made it clear she would not support property tax relief in the next session. She raised a ton of outside special interest money and told lie on top of lie about school funding and abortion to try to mislead voters and stop our efforts. Quite frankly, the people of Kansas are much smarter than that and saw through their dishonesty and hateful rhetoric and voted to put a stop to their games. " 

"At the end of the day, the massive amount of work and dedication our House Republican candidates put into their districts—ensuring they were listening to what is most important to you, is truly why we’re here with a much stronger supermajority. A humble thank you to the people of Kansas and congratulations to our team—I look forward to the truly awesome things we’ll accomplish together for the next two years.”

Sanders' priorities for the upcoming session include reintroducing a bill from the last session to reduce property taxes and advancing a long-sought sales tax exemption for<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2023_24/measures/documents/hb2041_00_0000.pdf"> qualifying community theaters</a>.

“We got it as part of another bill last session, but the governor vetoed it,” Sanders said."It passed both the House and the Senate by wide margins, and she vetoed. At the time we weren't going to be in session to override her veto."

Given the gains in the House and Senate, Sanders said that he is not overwhelmingly worried about a looming veto this time. 

"Given the overall numbers that we've got now, her ability to veto much of anything is not going to be very high," Sanders said.&nbsp;

Sanders stated that he and his Republican colleagues plan to pass property tax relief for Kansans by advocating for a reduction in the state’s mill levy. The proposal, which sought to lower the state’s property tax for K-12 public education from 20 mills to 18 mills, was introduced last session but was vetoed by the governor.

The legislation also increased the residential exemption on state property tax from $40,000 to $100,000.

"We need to get a reduction of mill levy that the state assesses, and I know that that's going to come up very early in the session," Sanders said. "I'm thinking it's going to be passed in January. The governor has promised to veto it, and we'll be able to override that veto in both the House and Senate now, with the makeup of the new legislature, so that's high on my agenda."&nbsp;

In addition to tax relief, Sanders said Republicans would focus on getting more funding for county tag offices across Kansas. He acknowledged recent frustration from Saline County residents over the closure of a local satellite office due to funding shortages. 

"The state tag offices haven't had a raise in their funding in 17 years, and the only way tag offices can get more money is if the state appropriates it," Sanders said. "This isn't a city or county decision."

On October 23, the State Legislative Coordinating Council approved the creation of the Special Committee on Legislative Budget.&nbsp; This interim committee is exploring a new approach to the state budget process, which would allow the Kansas Legislature to draft the initial budget rather than the governor, as has traditionally been done.

"We don't know what they [the committee] is going to come up with yet, but the way I understand it is that instead of the budget originating with the governor, which is the way that it's always been done, the budget is going to originate with the legislature," Sanders said.&nbsp;

 Under this proposal, the governor would review the legislature’s proposed budget and she would have the option to make line-item vetoes. However, Sanders believes the governor's vetoes are not likely to withstand overrides in the new legislature.&nbsp;While the governor could release agency budget requests sooner, in the past, the legislature had to wait until after the session started to review them. 

Those in favor of changing how the budget is proposed argue that the change will provide another two months for further vetting, ensuring the state is on a fiscally responsible path.

The interim committee, consisting of 23 members appointed by Senate President Ty Masterson and House Speaker Dan Hawkins, includes key legislative leaders and chairs of various budget committees.

Sanders re-elected to Kansas House, focuses on tax cuts, tag office, budgets

ELLSWORTH COUNTY —Law enforcement across Kansas continue to see more drivers traveling well above the posted speed limit, despite a statewide campaign to crack down on excessive speeding.

On Sunday Master Trooper Van Buren stopped a driver traveling 118 mph in a 75 mph zone in Ellsworth County, according to a social media report from the KHP. The trooper arrested the driver.&nbsp;

On Saturday, Trooper Mai made a traffic stop in Cloud County, where a driver was cited for speeding at 103 mph in a 70 mph zone, improper lane use, and child restraint violations.

"It’s a crucial reminder that every safety measure counts on the road. Child safety seats are designed to protect our littlest passengers, and at these speeds, every precaution matters."&nbsp; The KHP released no additional details.

More than 100 Salina and Saline County residents gathered under a clear blue sky at Sunset Park in Salina on Nov. 11 for a Veterans Day ceremony honoring local veterans and recognizing their service to the country.

Event seargent at arms and retired Marine Dan Pestinger greeted the audience and thanked them for their attendance.&nbsp;

"Behind us, we have the greatest citizens of Salina and Saline County. We salute you," Pestinger said as he saluted those in attendance.

While attendees arrived, a slight cool breeze blew many multi-colored red, orange and yellow leaves off trees in the park- marking a quintessential Fall Kansas day. Members of the Salina Republican Women served hot chocolate, donut holes and coffee.&nbsp;

Michelle Cardinal Dolan, Executive Director of Music at Kansas Wesleyan University, opened the ceremony by singing "The Star-Spangled Banner." The audience joined with her and finished the song in unison. Among the attendees were students from Southeast of Saline (SES) Middle School, first graders from Cornerstone Elementary, Salina Mayor Bill Longbine, and others.&nbsp;

For Trent Douglas, SES Middle School social studies educator, Veterans Day provides a meaningful lesson beyond the classroom. 

“We like to make sure the kids understand and recognize the sacrifices that many people have made to make this country free and to give us the benefits we have,” Douglas said. “Seeing the ceremony, interacting with the veterans, and taking time afterward to look at the memorial—it all gives them a deeper appreciation for what’s been done for them, for the freedoms they enjoy.”

Douglas noted that for some students, Veterans Day has personal significance.

 “We have a few students whose parents are veterans, so it means a little more to them,” he said. “They’ve experienced that connection firsthand.”

The first-grade students from Cornerstone played a special role in the ceremony. Under the direction of First-Grade Teacher Shannon Stevens,&nbsp; the Cornerstone students recited a portion of the Declaration of Independence.

"We started practicing the first day of school around mid-August; we learn a little bit every day," Stevens said. "We finished the last of our selection last week, so we just work on it a little bit every day."&nbsp;

After the students finished their recitation, attendees quickly rose to their feet and applauded the students' hard work and dedication.&nbsp;

Retired Army Veteran and longtime resident of Salina, John Ourada, said he was impressed by the first graders' demonstration of patriotism.&nbsp;

"I tell you, they are impressive. I wonder how many hours they practiced that because that was a long thing to recite," Ourada said.

 Ourada served in the U.S. Army on active duty in Germany from 1970 to 1972, initially held the rank of Lieutenant and ultimately achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His career spanned 28 years, during which he served as a combat engineer in Germany, commanded a dump truck company in North Dakota, and later joined the artillery in Minnesota, where he held various roles, including supply officer and training inspector.

Ourada said he appreciated the event turnout and the teachers who brought their students to attend and participate.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100080680443086">Leslie W. Kreps American Legion Post 62</a> Legion Commander Richard Kinney served as event emcee. Kinney has held the title of commander since Oct. 31.

Master Sgt. David Medina, this year’s event guest speaker, shared remarks that highlighted the courage and dedication of the nation’s service members. Medina provided some clarification regarding national holidays honoring veterans.&nbsp;

"Veterans Day is not Memorial Day. Too often, the two days are mistaken for one another. On Memorial Day, we honor the fallen by attending memorial services within our community or laying flowers and planting flags on graves at local veteran cemeteries. Veterans Day, however, is an opportunity to do the same but is also an appropriate time to show your appreciation to veteran friends and family," Medina said.&nbsp;

Reflecting on the legacy of service members throughout history, Medina emphasized the profound sacrifices that have shaped the nation. 

"For over 240 years, the men and women of our nation have stepped forward to serve in our armed forces and defend our freedom. They have risked their lives for the land, for the people, and for the ideals that we all cherish. Our battles, our victories, indeed, our way of life are owed not to great moments or important dates, but to the actions and sacrifices of the men and women willing to step into the breach for their country and for the cause of freedom," Medina said.&nbsp;

Several veterans said this was their first time attending the Sunset Park Veterans Day ceremony.

"This is the first time I've come," said Air Force veteran Dr. Randy Hassler said. "It was excellent... I’m coming back."

Hassler, a retired physician and former F-4 pilot, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1971 to 1979 in Vietnam. Originally from Salina, he’s lived in the area for 40 years with his family, which includes two sons, four granddaughters, and two great-granddaughters.

U.S. Navy veteran Vaughn Mortimer attended the Veterans Day ceremony at Sunset Park for the first time this year. Mortimer served in the Navy from 1982 to 1988 aboard the Sturgeon-class attack submarine, USS Seahorse.

"I was stationed in Charleston on the USS Seahorse, and then I went to the shipyard in Washington state for a little over a year, and then I got out to the Navy," Mortimer said.

Mortimer is a lifelong resident of the Salina area. He is originally from Gypsum and has lived in the Salina area most of his life, aside from his years of service. Mortimer currently serves as the vice commander of the USS Dorado Base, which is part of the United States Submarine Veterans organization.

During his closing remarks, Medina shared small and big ways nonservice members can show their gratitude and appreciation to veterans.&nbsp;

"What can you do for veterans? You might consider writing a heartfelt letter or spending some time with a veteran, volunteering at your local veterans organization, or donating to nonprofits," Medina said. "Your efforts can help veterans feel valued and supported, not just on this day, but throughout the year."

Following the ceremony the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100080680443086">American Legion Post 62</a> hosted a luncheon at the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/vfwpost1432">VFW Post 1432</a> at 1108 W. Crawford.&nbsp;

We salute you," Pestinger said as he saluted those in attendance.While attendees arrived, a slight cool breeze blew many multi-colored red, orange and yellow leaves off trees in the park- marking a quintessential Fall Kansas day. Members of the Salina Republican Women served hot chocolate, donut holes and coffee.&nbsp;Michelle Cardinal Dolan, Executive Director of Music at Kansas Wesleyan University, opened the ceremony by singing "The Star-Spangled Banner." The audience joined with her and finished the song in unison. Among the attendees were students from Southeast of Saline (SES) Middle School, first graders from Cornerstone Elementary, Salina Mayor Bill Longbine, and others.&nbsp;For Trent Douglas, SES Middle School social studies educator, Veterans Day provides a meaningful lesson beyond the classroom. “We like to make sure the kids understand and recognize the sacrifices that many people have made to make this country free and to give us the benefits we have,” Douglas said. “Seeing the ceremony, interacting with the veterans, and taking time afterward to look at the memorial—it all gives them a deeper appreciation for what’s been done for them, for the freedoms they enjoy.”<figure>

 </figure>Douglas noted that for some students, Veterans Day has personal significance. “We have a few students whose parents are veterans, so it means a little more to them,” he said. “They’ve experienced that connection firsthand.”The first-grade students from Cornerstone played a special role in the ceremony. Under the direction of First-Grade Teacher Shannon Stevens,&nbsp; the Cornerstone students recited a portion of the Declaration of Independence."We started practicing the first day of school around mid-August; we learn a little bit every day," Stevens said.  </figure>Retired Army Veteran and longtime resident of Salina, John Ourada, said he was impressed by the first graders' demonstration of patriotism.&nbsp;"I tell you, they are impressive. I wonder how many hours they practiced that because that was a long thing to recite," Ourada said. Ourada served in the U.S. Army on active duty in Germany from 1970 to 1972, initially held the rank of Lieutenant and ultimately achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His career spanned 28 years, during which he served as a combat engineer in Germany, commanded a dump truck company in North Dakota, and later joined the artillery in Minnesota, where he held various roles, including supply officer and training inspector.Ourada said he appreciated the event turnout and the teachers who brought their students to attend and participate.&nbsp;<h2>Guest Speaker Master Sgt. Buckeye in Abilene. &nbsp;To sign up, applicants must be the legal guardian of the children being registered, and sign-ups are required in person. “It’s an economic driver. The airport is at the center,” said Gary Foss, Salina Airport Authority’s air service development consultant.

What sets this huge complex apart is being hitched to the Salina Airport and Industrial Center. Salina’s scheduled air service, supplied by United Airlines and operated by SkyWest, is an engine of the growing ecosystem, where one-part benefits another.

At the north end of the airport property is 1Vision Aviation performing yearly heavy maintenance of the 50-seat jets that carry thousands of passengers a year to hubs in Chicago and Denver. Many connect from there to other destinations.&nbsp;

Heavy maintenance is “a monthlong job,” he said.

Starting in November, 1Vision will become an overnight maintenance base for United Airlines, said Jim Sponder, CEO of the maintenance, repair and overhaul company. It also has a painting division. His career began by fixing airplanes for airlines at night.&nbsp;

“Whatever needs to be fixed, we’ve got eight hours to do it,” Sponder said. “We will try to get as much done as we can, and they won’t have to fly to another maintenance base.”

The arrangement is a win-win for 1Vision and scheduled air service in Salina, he said.

Sponder aims to offer premier service and calm the scheduling concerns airlines have with overnight maintenance.&nbsp;

“A lot of cities don’t want that. When you have maintenance, you find things, and a lot of times, you won’t have the parts on site. It causes cancellations,” he said.

﻿“With 1Vision running it, I don’t care if I have to fly to Chicago overnight — or wherever there is a big parts vendor — and get the part. We’re going to do everything within our power so people can safely fly out of here the next morning.”&nbsp;

Sponder’s crew is often called to Hays and Manhattan to fix airplanes at night.

“I would rather fix them in Salina so I can go home to my bed,” he said. “I’ll be down there at the terminal watching (passengers) board, and making sure the pilots have no issues before they taxi out.”

By SALINA POST Salina will commemorate Veterans Day with several events honoring those who have served.&nbsp; On Monday, November 11, Veterans Day in Salina will start with a flag-raising ceremony and cannon salute at Salina Area Technical College, 2562 Centennial Road, at 9:30 a.m., led by soldiers from the Regional Training Site-Maintenance.

Indoor brunch will be served to active duty members of the military, veterans, and their families courtesy of Salina Tech. Please RSVP by emailing <a href="mailto:engagement@salinatech.edu">engagement@salinatech.edu</a>.&nbsp;

Later in the day, Master Sgt. David Medina Jr., quality assurance operations noncommissioned officer in charge of the 235th Regiment, will serve as the guest speaker for a Veterans Day ceremony at the Salina War Memorial in Sunset Park, 700 Sunset Drive. 

This ceremony is set to begin at 11 a.m. Following Monday’s ceremony, the American Legion Post 62 will host a luncheon at the VFW Post 1432, 1108 W. Crawford. The community is encouraged to attend these events to honor and show support for veterans.
