LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska announced plans Tuesday for an immigration detention center in the remote southwest corner of the state as President Donald Trump’s administration&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/border-immigration-kristi-noem-alligator-alcatraz-02daf485e8a499022491c35f7c656fe8">races to expand</a>&nbsp;the infrastructure necessary for increasing deportations.

The facility will be dubbed the “Cornhusker Clink,” a play on Nebraska’s nickname of the Cornhusker State and an old slang term for jail. The alliterative name follows in the vein of the previously announced “Alligator Alcatraz” and “Deportation Depot” detention centers in Florida and the “Speedway Slammer” in Indiana.

Republican Gov. Jim Pillen said he and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem had agreed to use an existing minimum security prison work camp in McCook — a remote city of about 7,000 people in the middle of the wide-open prairies between Denver and Omaha — to house people awaiting deportation and being held for other immigration proceedings. It’s expected to be a Midwest hub for detainees from several states.

“This is about keeping Nebraskans – and Americans across our country – safe,” Pillen said in a statement.

The facility can accommodate 200 people with plans to expand to 300. McCook is about 210 miles (338 kilometers) west of Lincoln, the state capital.

“If you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Nebraska’s Cornhusker Clink. Avoid arrest and self deport now using the CBP Home App,” Noem&nbsp;<a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/08/19/cornhusker-clink-new-partnership-dhs-and-state-nebraska-expand-detention-space" target="_blank">said in a separate statement.</a>

Noem’s agency&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/dhsgov/status/1957931320044138759?s=46" target="_blank">posted a picture</a>&nbsp;on social media showing ears of corn wearing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement hats, standing in front of a prison fence.

The governor said later at a news conference in McCook that the center will have the advantage of being located at an existing facility and near a regional airport. He told reporters he didn’t know if the center would house women as well as men or if children could be held there. He said he first learned the federal government was interested in the facility on Friday.

Pillen also announced he would order the Nebraska National Guard to provide administrative and logistical support to Nebraska-based immigration agents. About 20 soldiers will be involved. And he said the Nebraska State Patrol would allow six troopers to help federal immigration agents make arrests.

Adding detention facilities to hold growing number of immigrants arrested

The Trump administration is adding new detention facilities across the country to hold the growing number of immigrants it has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/immigration">arrested and accused</a>&nbsp;of being in the country illegally. ICE centers were holding more than 56,000 immigrants in June, the most since 2019.

The new and planned facilities include the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/florida-immigration-ice-trump-alligator-alcatraz-2edf0cd03409b3526f34d4d7b33074be">remote detention center in the Florida Everglades</a>&nbsp;known as&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/alligator-alcatraz-immigration-detainees-florida-cc2fb9e34e760a50e97f13fe59cbf075">“Alligator Alcatraz,”</a>&nbsp;which opened last month. It’s designed to hold up to 3,000 detainees in temporary tent structures. When Trump toured it,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-everglades-immigrant-detention-facility-visit-5dc5568ec15534947c29c9149b773d1d">he suggested it could be a model</a>&nbsp;for future lockups nationwide.

The Florida facility also been the subject of legal challenges by attorneys who allege violations of due process there, including the rights of detainees to meet with their attorneys, limited access to immigration courts and poor living conditions. Critics have been trying to stop further construction and operations until it comes into compliance with federal environmental laws.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/florida-immigration-detention-center-desantis-dce8b6b8f634152a604eb06bfc2fb461">announced last week</a>&nbsp;that his administration is preparing to open a second facility, dubbed “Deportation Depot,” at a state prison in north Florida. It’s expected to have 1,300 immigration beds, though that capacity could be expanded to 2,000, state officials said.

Also last week, officials in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tennessee-immigration-detention-facility-a4cbf17febb9c345282d2fc33087fc2b">rural Tennessee town of Mason</a>&nbsp;voted to approve agreements to turn a former prison into an immigration detention facility operated by a private company, despite loud objections from residents and activists during a contentious public meeting.

And the Trump administration announced plans earlier this month for a 1,000-bed&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/immigration-detention-indiana-prison-immigrants-f4af2d5ad5ece8481b0750dad53fb743">detention center in Indiana</a>&nbsp;that would be dubbed “Speedway Slammer,” prompting a backlash in the Midwestern state that hosts the Indianapolis 500 auto race.

Corrections director Rob Jeffreys said the 186 inmates currently at the McCook work camp will be transferred to other state facilities over the next 45 to 60 days. The repurposed facility will be run by the state but will be paid for by the federal government. He said it’s already set up and accredited to hold prisoners, so detainees won’t be housed in tents or other temporary quarters.

The Nebraska plan has already raised concerns

In a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/reel/758115393643071" target="_blank">video</a>&nbsp;posted to social media, state Sen. Megan Hunt, an independent, blasted a lack of transparency about plans for a detention center, citing her unfulfilled request to the governor and executive branch for emails and other records.

She urged people to support local immigrant rights groups.

“The No. 1 thing we need to do is protect our neighbors, protect the people in our communities who are being targeted by these horrible people, these horrible organizations that are making choices to lock up, detain, disappear our neighbors and families and friends,” Hunt said.

Around a half-dozen protesters sat in the hallway outside the governor’s office Tuesday afternoon making signs that said, “No Nazi Nebraska” and “ICE = Gestapo.”

Maghie Miller-Jenkins of Lincoln said she doesn’t think an ICE detention center is a good idea, adding the state should tackle problems like child hunger and homelessness. “This state has numerous things they could focus on that would benefit the constituents,” she said.

Saline County RFD 3 acquiring new equipment from a grant 100% funded by the grantor

Salina Animal Services are considering in bringing back a volunteer program.

According to Salina Animal Services Manager, Monique Hawley this volunteer program is only a consideration and has not been finalized on when it will come back. 

She explained this potential program would be separate from the discontinued "Friends of Salina Animal Shelter Group" that ended back in June 2024.

Hawley stated they have not yet decided on a plan to establish the new program.

"We have not sat down and talked about how those plans will look, but we will try and see what we can do to get something started," said Hawley.

She described some of the perks in having a volunteer program. Those being extra enrichment in care, entertainment and socialization for the animals and assistance with off-site activities.

Salina Animal Services considering bringing back volunteer program

Salina Police have arrested a man of being under the influence of drugs, after a call was made about him 'screaming with a gun' in a Salina neighborhood.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Monday, August 18 at around 1:40 pm, a 20-year old man contacted police and said someone was 'chasing after him.' 

However, SPD received another call shortly about a man 'screaming with a gun' in the area of Eastgate and Beloit Ave.

Afterwards, SPD and Kansas state authorities arrived to the area and located the man who was reportedly 'screaming with a gun.' Authorities took the man into custody, but did not locate a gun on him. 

SPD stated the man who was arrested, was the same 20-year old male who called about someone 'chasing after him.'

Authorities stated the man was 'under the influence of drugs' and transported him to Salina Regional Health Center to be medically evaluated.&nbsp;

Furthermore, officers located a duffel bag in the area where the arrest was made. SPD stated inside the bag they found cocaine and handgun magazines and ammunition. A handgun was later located in front of a residence around the area.

SPD believed the man was connected to the duffel bag and handgun.

According to SPD, the suspect is currently at the hospital. Once he is released, SPD will book him into the Saline County Jail for requested charges that include, Possession of drugs and possibly Intoxicated Possession of a Firearm.

SPD stated the name of the suspect cannot be released at this time, but will be once they officially press charges on him.&nbsp;

Kansas Department of Transportation

The Kansas Department of Transportation plans to temporarily close a portion of I-135 starting at mile marker 82 in Saline County on two separate occasions. The closures are necessary to swing and place beams for the new K-4 bridge construction over I-135.

Southbound I-135 will close at 7:00 pm Friday, August 22 and reopen at 6:00 am on Saturday, August 23.

Northbound I-135 will close at 7:00 pm Monday, August 25 and reopen at 6:00 am on Tuesday, August 26.

Traffic will be diverted up and down the interchange ramps at exit 82 during the closures.

King Construction of Hesston is the prime contractor of the bridge replacement project which is scheduled to be open to traffic by November, with all work scheduled to be complete by December, conditions permitting.

KDOT urges all motorists to be alert and obey the warning signs when approaching and driving through a highway work zone.&nbsp;

Portions of I-135 set to temporarily close in Saline County

Saline County Food Action Community Team

The Saline County Food Action Community Team (FACT) is reminding residents that two community listening sessions will take place&nbsp; Wednesday, August 20&nbsp;as part of the effort to create Saline County’s first comprehensive food system assessment.

The sessions are open to all community members and will help shape the future of food access, food security, and local food systems in the county.

Light refreshments will be provided, and all are welcome to attend. No registration is required.

“This is your chance to make your voice heard about food in Saline County,” said Michelle Coats, Chair of FACT. “Whether you’ve struggled with food access, use a food pantry, grow your own food, or just care about healthy food in our community, we want to hear from you.”

These sessions are the final step in building the Saline County Food Assessment, following a county-wide survey and a series of stakeholder interviews. Insights gathered will be included in the final report later this year.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina is expanding its innovative mentoring initiative, Beyond School Walls, now entering its fourth year. 

Originally launched in 2022 as a pilot in partnership with Vortex and Salina Public Schools, the program connects high school students with professional mentors to help prepare them for future careers. Since its inception, the initiative has gained momentum, welcoming partners including Great Plains Manufacturing, the Salina Family YMCA, and the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

Beyond School Walls was created in response to a growing workforce challenge—nearly 40% of employers globally struggle to find candidates with the skills they need. By fostering one-to-one mentoring relationships within professional settings, the program equips students with practical skills and career exposure while helping businesses enhance employee engagement.

Through regular visits to participating businesses, students gain firsthand experience in professional environments and explore career paths ranging from financial literacy to STEM fields. These experiences not only broaden their horizons but also build lasting, supportive relationships with mentors who help guide them toward post-graduation success.

The Salina Police Department (SPD) are currently investigating and awaiting the results of a final forensic pathologist report  for a 7-week old infant who died late July.

According to the SPD, they are staying updated with Kansas City medical examiners on the cause of death.

SPD stated once they receive an update, they will release that information as soon as received.

The decision on the fulfillment of the City Manager position for Salina has yet to be announced. According to the Human Resources Director for the City of Salina, Natalie Fischer, after closed interviews the Commissioners conducted with the finalists on Tuesday, August 12th, no decision was made. 

Fischer mentioned City of Salina staff are currently awaiting a decision from the Commissioners.

Fischer is unsure of the Commissioner's timeline on a decision.

A 2-year old girl from Salina has been nominated as part of a nationwide competition for a chance to win "Toddler of the Year," by <a href="https://www.toysfortots.org/">Toys for Tots</a>.

Salina born, Londyn Carter has a chance to win $25,000.00, a photoshoot campaign for brands, lead the "Hollywood Christmas Parade," and visiting the Peppa Pig Amusement Park in Florida. Carter has been&nbsp;a competitor for the last several weeks for "Toddler of the Year" in partnership with <a href="https://shop.hasbro.com/en-us">Hasbro</a> and <a href="https://www.toysfortots.org/">Toys for Tots. </a>&nbsp;She has placed top 20, top 15 and top 10.

If given the chance to win, the money would go towards Londyn and her siblings college funds.&nbsp;

Her parents are Casey Herring (Joel Lutz) and Andrew Aronson of Salina, KS. Herring stated Londyn was born in Salina two months premature and spent a short time in the NICU with her twin brother. 

"Londyn now enjoys playing with her siblings, feeding farm animals, riding tractors and keeping everyone on their toes," said Herring. "$25,000 would be a blessing for our family as we have endured several obstacles over the years. This would help start schooling funds for Londyn and her siblings."

Londyn is now in running for top 5 that ends Thursday August 21st. After the voting ends, the start of group finals occurs. But the competition still has several stages to go, beginning and ending every Thursday until September 25th.

A man was arrested after allegedly throwing rocks at operating vehicles in Salina.

According to the Saline Police Department (SPD) on Monday at midnight, a man was reportedly throwing rocks at cars traveling in the 300 &amp; 400 blocks of S. Ohio.&nbsp;

Officers arrived to the area and located the suspect, matching the description of the multiple reports that were made. When officers approached the suspect, he ran away but was arrested shortly after.

SPD stated that several vehicles were reportedly damaged.

Taken into custody was 35-year old Zachary Fairchild. He was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges of Obstruction several charges of Damage to Property and two Salina Municipal warrants for Failure to appear.

A woman was arrested after threatening a teenage girl with a knife inside a home.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Sunday, August 17th at around noon, a teenage girl called police about her female relative threatening her with a knife inside a home in South Salina.

SPD immediately arrived to the home and arrested 30-year old, Maria Perez-Aguilar without incident. According to SPD, Perez-Aguilar was going through a 'mental-health crisis' when she threatened the girl.

Perez-Aguilar was transported to Salina Regional Health Center for a medical evaluation. She is facing requested charges of Aggravated Assault and Child Endangerment.

At the scene, police found the victim with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Officers and first responders from the Concordia Fire Department rendered life-saving aid at the scene. The victim was then transported to a local hospital for additional medical treatment.

Officers secured the scene, obtained witness statement and identified individuals believed to be connected to the incident. Police detained three individuals for interviews as part of the investigation. Police also executed search warrants at the scene and a second location.&nbsp; Police are working with outside agencies in an effort to locate and apprehend the suspect.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Police have forward charges of first degree attempted murder and two counts of aggravated robbery to the Cloud County Attorney.&nbsp; Police released no additional details including the possible suspect.

Police: Man shot during robbery in north central Kansas

Two suspects were arrested after a home invasion and allegedly assaulting the homeowner.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday, August 15th just before 5:00 pm, a male victim of a home invasion called police about two suspects allegedly stealing cash and assaulting him.

Reportedly, two male armed suspects broke into his home on the 400 block of S. Ohio. Both suspects stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the victim and hit him in the mouth with a pistol, causing a minor injury.&nbsp;

The suspects then left in a vehicle, and it was reported that one of the suspects is known to the victim.

About an hour later, SPD located a vehicle that matched the description of the suspect's on Westport Blvd. An officer conducted a traffic stop and arrested both suspects without incident. No firearms were recovered at the time of the arrest.

Arrested was 45-year old, James Floyd and 52-year old, Anthony Miller.

Both were charged with Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Burglary, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault and Criminal Possession of a Weapon by a Felon.

The victim did not need any medical treatment.

Two suspects arrested in connection to home invasion and alleged assault of the homeowner

Salina Police arrest a man who admitted to exposing himself to two females in Central Salina.&nbsp;

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday, August 15th at around 10:00 am, the police department received a call about a man who exposed himself to a woman and her daughter in Central Salina.&nbsp;

After the report, officers arrived to the area and came in contact with the suspect. Reportedly, the suspect was found to have his shorts unzipped and admitted he exposed himself to the victims.

Officers then arrested 61-year old, Gerald Shaw. Shaw was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges of Lewd &amp; Lasciviousness and Possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.&nbsp;

 </figure>Salina PostSalina Police arrest a man who admitted to exposing himself to two females in Central Salina.&nbsp;According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday, August 15th at around 10:00 am, the police department received a call about a man who exposed himself to a woman and her daughter in Central Salina.&nbsp;After the report, officers arrived to the area and came in contact with the suspect. Reportedly, the suspect was found to have his shorts unzipped and admitted he exposed himself to the victims.Officers then arrested 61-year old, Gerald Shaw. Shaw was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges of Lewd &amp; Lasciviousness and Possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.&nbsp;

The 4th annual Central Kansas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Family 5k walk is set to occur in September.

On Saturday, September 13 starting&nbsp;8:00 am at JRI Stadium on the campus of Kansas Wesleyan, will be the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb organized by Salina Guns &amp; Hoses.&nbsp;

Registration is open today and those wishing to participate can do so as well by registering at 7:00 am the day of the event (Scan QR code on the flyer above to register).

Cost is $30 per person and all proceeds will be donated to 3-year old Ezra and his family.

Ezra was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma (rare liver cancer) on May 2024. With the liver tumor touching his heart, Ezra endured six rounds of chemo in an attempt to shirk the tumor before having his first surgery on August 2024. He has had double lung surgery, where 17 tumors were removed from his lungs. Pathology reports showed a more aggressive cancer, Hepatocellular Neoplasm NOS.

Ezra just had his second lung surgery, removing three more tumors.&nbsp;

"Ezra is a strong, brave little hero, and his mom (Breann) and family are by his side, cheering him on!" (statement from the flyer).

The stair climb is a physical and emotional tribute to the firefighters and first responders who sacrificed their lives for lives of others during the September 11th attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001. Participants climb the equivalent of 110 stories, which is the height of the World Trade Center towers.

Other key aspects about the event include a tribute to the fallen, a symbolic journey, emotional impact and a physical challenge. Michael Ascher of Salina Guns &amp; Hoses said this year, the climb will be focused on the community.

"We believe by bringing civil service together for the goal of helping local families in need, we not only improve the working relationship between law enforcement, fire and EMT, but we also improve public trust," stated Ascher. "This event aligns perfectly with our mission and vision."

Salina Guns &amp; Hoses has partnered with Be Assure, Be Wealth, Kansas Wesleyan and several other loyal sponsors to make the memorial stair climb the largest event to date. A "paddle battle" pickleball tournament will also occur during the event.

Three day weather forecast Salina, August 18 - August 20

Kansas Wesleyan is proud to announce the winners of its 2025 Alumni Awards. Being honored this year are Abby Wray ’23&nbsp;(Young Alumni Award),&nbsp;Dr. David B. Laha ’79&nbsp;(Alumni Service Award)&nbsp;and Powers G. Porter ’12&nbsp;(Alumni Achievement Award). Tom Wilbur will&nbsp;receive the Alumni by Choice distinction.

The awards will be given at the Hall of Fame Induction and Alumni Association Award ceremonies at 9 a.m. Oct. 25, during Homecoming.

Wray is an award-winning multimedia journalist, producer and weekend news anchor at KAKE News in Wichita. She won two first place Kansas Association Broadcasters awards for her work in the News Feature and Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion categories in July.

At KWU, Wray was a part of the forensics and debate team, earning five national titles in parliamentary debate, interviewing, dramatic interpretation, POI and novice prose, and winning the All-American title her junior year. She was an active Communications student, anchoring the news show, hosting a radio show and podcast, writing and editing for the newspaper, and live-streaming countless events during her time in school.

A Biology major, Laha graduated with honors, laying the foundation for his medical career. He was a prominent figure in KWU athletics, excelling in basketball, track and cross country. His dedication to these sports earned him induction into the Jerry Jones Kansas Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame for all three sports.

Laha established his podiatry practice in Overland Park, Kan., in 1985, where he has since become a respected specialist in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot. His expertise in reconstructive foot surgery and sports medicine of the lower extremity has made him a leading provider of care in the Kansas City area. He served from 2012 to 2020 on the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts and was the first podiatrist to hold the position of president of the board, from 2017 to 2018.

Porter graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University’s Normal Department on June 5, 1912,&nbsp;when he was&nbsp;one of several graduating speakers. He was born in Oswego, Kan. in 1891 and served as an educator in the state’s school system for 35 years. In his eight years as a principal in Olathe, from 1914 to 1922, he spearheaded the building of a new school.

He became the first principal at Dunbar School, for Black students kindergarten through eighth grade, in Salina in 1922. Porter was selected by Gov. Jonathan McMillan Davis in January 1923 for a special honor as a state delegate to attend the annual Negro National Educational Convention in Washington, D.C., in March that year.

In 1926, he moved to Atchison, where he retired from education in 1947.

Porter continued his involvement in civic affairs. He was widely known in Republican circles in Kansas and served as a campaign speaker for the party’s national committee.&nbsp;He rose to the post of grand master in his Mason lodge, and after his death in June 1973, P.G. Porter Lodge #142, was formed in St. Louis, Ill., and named in his honor.

Wilbur, a prominent business leader and community advocate based in Salina, is being recognized with the Alumni by Choice award. The Alumni by Choice honors individuals who have given unselfishly of themselves to Kansas Wesleyan University but neither graduated from nor attended the university. They must show a strong commitment to the university’s mission and exemplify outstanding commitment.&nbsp;Wilbur most recently served as chairman and CEO of BANK VI, a locally owned financial institution he helped form in 2005. In addition to his banking role, Wilbur is the managing partner of Wilbur Development, LLC, a company focused on real estate and community development projects and regional outreach.

He has been actively involved in charitable causes, and supported numerous nonprofit organizations throughout the years, including serving on their boards. His dedication to civic engagement led to his appointment to the Kansas Wesleyan University Foundation Board in 2019, where he served with distinction for several years.
