Two juveniles were arrested after allegedly stealing one of their mother's vehicle and fleeing from police.

According to the Salina Police Department on early Monday morning at around 3:45 am, an officer attempted a traffic stop on a gray 2015 Nissan Altima for allegedly failing to signal a turn at the 500 block of Wilson.

Reportedly, the driver failed to comply and fled. A vehicle pursuit then began and continued throughout various parts of Central Salina, reaching top speeds of 98 mph.&nbsp;

During the pursuit, the suspect hit two parked vehicles and struck a power pole. The vehicle eventually became disabled in the 100 block of S. Phillips.

Afterwards, two juvenile boys exited the vehicle and ran away. SPD authorities later located the juveniles around the area and arrested both suspects, aged 15 &amp; 16.

SPD stated that both suspects 'stole one of their mother's vehicle.' 

Both suspects were arrested on the following requested charges:

Felony flee and elude, cited with numerous traffic offenses, leaving scene of an accident, Interference with Law Enforcement and Deprivation of Property.&nbsp;

According to the Salina Police Department on Saturday, August 9th an unknown suspect(s) shot at an apartment complex on the 200 block of S. 4th St. Officers received reported about the alleged shooting at around 12:40 pm and interviewed one of the residents who had their apartment shot at, once they arrived.

Officers found bullets that hit the walls outside of the complex and found one that went through a glass window at the resident's apartment.&nbsp;

SPD have identified no suspect(s) at this time and are reviewing surveillance video, during the investigation.

Salina Police are currently searching for a suspect who allegedly robbed a convenience store.&nbsp;

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday, August 8th an armed robbery occurred at the Kwik Shop on 657 Fairdale Rd. At around 10:30 pm, SPD received a call from a customer who stated that the store clerk had been robbed.&nbsp;

When officers arrived, they found the clerk and interviewed them. The clerk stated they stepped outside to check on ice machines, and was approached by a man wearing an all-black attire with mask and gloves. Reportedly, the suspect pointed a gun at the clerk and allegedly demanded money.&nbsp;

Allegedly, the suspect then entered inside the store and stole an unknown amount of money from the cash register. Afterwards, the suspect left the store and it was not determined whether they left in a vehicle or on foot.

SPD is currently searching for the suspect and are reviewing surveillance footage.

Reportedly, the suspects were armed with handguns when they forcibly entered into the home. The resident stated of being hit in the head by one of the suspects, leaving a gash above their eye. The suspects then left in gray SUV and it was not determined whether they stole anything.

An officer on patrol later located the SUV in Salina and conducted a traffic stop. The SUV pulled over and the occupants of the vehicle were discovered to be the suspects of the home invasion.

All suspects were arrested and booked into the Saline County Jail. The suspects were identified as:

SALINE COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 5:30p.m. Sunday in Saline County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2002 Dodge Dakota driven by Isaac J.&nbsp; Perez, 17, Lindsborg, was northbound on on South Burma Road at Crawford Street.&nbsp; The driver stopped&nbsp;and then proceeded through the intersection. A 2014 Dodge Ram driven by Colton D.&nbsp;Bettenbrock, 19, Brookville, struck the Dodge Dakota.

The impact pushed Dodge Ram into a westbound 2014 Ford Explorer driven by Vance J.&nbsp;Johnson, 28, Salina. who was waiting to turn onto S Burma Road.

EMS transported&nbsp;Bettenbrock to Salina Regional Health Center. Perez, Johnson and three passengers in the Ford were not injured. All six were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Saline County Jail Bookings, August 10

July 20th, marked the grand opening of Meddys, the newest addition to downtown Santa Fe. After a soft opening, during which they offered one free meal per customer each day, they have officially opened their doors for business. 

The friendly welcome and warm, cozy atmosphere of this Mediterranean restaurant sits next to Sonic.

As soon as the front door opens, the staff greets all who walk through the door, telling them, ‘Welcome to Meddys,’ and the atmosphere draws you in. It’s a warm and welcoming space for everyone to enjoy. The feeling they have created in Meddys restaurant as a whole has found its way into this location thanks to their designer, Stephanie.&nbsp;

Corporate Onboarding Officer, Ainsley Overheul has been working to help train and bring Meddys up to speed. She was ecstatic about the soft opening turnout, commenting, “We received great feedback from the community, especially through the soft opening. This has been the busiest soft opening we’ve ever had, so we were just like amazed by the turnout.” 

As far as the service goes, Meddys pride themselves on being a full-service restaurant, even with their counter ordering system. They take care of bringing food, getting refills and cleaning off the tables. 

Overheul stated, “We actually do it completely different. We are a full-service restaurant and we just happen to have an order-in counter, so I think that’s something really great about Meddys is our service standards. You are getting your drinks refilled, your complimentary pitta, your table should be bussed, pre-bussed, everything should be brought out to you, which I think is truly unique about Meddys.&nbsp;

Meddys' menu has a unique feature that is not common among most restaurants and that is their guided bank at the bottom of their menu. 

The menu displays what dishes are vegan-friendly, vegetarian-friendly, what has halal meat, dairy-free and gluten-free. Each one has a distinct color that correlates to the items on the menu.&nbsp;

Overheul suggested that new customers to Meddys start with the 'Meddys Main Plate.' 

The dish comes with a choice of protein (chicken, steak, or lamb), served with roasted veggies, dressed with a mixed herb garnish and your choice of a side (hummus, baba ganoush, Spanish eggplant, garlicky potatoes, shoestring fries, rice, tomato soup, mushroom soup, lentil soup, tabbouleh, mediterranean salad, fattoush salad, pitta bread or chips, roasted or fresh veggies).

	When asked about what they strive for, Overhaul said, “All of our service standards I think are the biggest thing that we focus on. I am actually a trainer as well and we do roughly 3-4 days of training just outlining our expectations, our critical drivers for service and much more. When you come to Meddys, we want to not only obviously meet your expectations, but we want to exceed them.”&nbsp;

The next time you are downtown, stop by Meddys. There is something for everyone, especially with their rewards app that gives free desserts or free hummus.&nbsp;

The trail was officially designated as a state park by the Kansas Legislature in 2018 and recognized as a National Recreation Trail by the&nbsp;U.S. Department of the Interior in 2020. Salina Area Technical College announces that it will host a site visit by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) for initial accreditation of its Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program.

The Catholic Foundation for Diocese of Salina (CFDS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Heather Hartman as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). 

Hartman, who has served the Foundation since 2021, brings a wealth of experience in fundraising, donor relations and community building, along with deep ties to the Diocese of Salina.

“Heather has a heart for the Church, a deep love for the people of our diocese and a gift for building relationships,” said Bishop Jerry Vincke. “I’m grateful for her leadership and excited to see how the Catholic Foundation will continue to grow and serve under her guidance.”

Hartman is a longtime Kansan with over a decade of experience in philanthropy, community foundations and rural leadership. As a former small business owner, she understands the importance of long-term investment and community connection values that now shape her work in stewarding donor gifts and strengthening the mission of the Church across the Diocese. 

As CEO, she will continue to lead efforts to grow the Foundation’s endowment funds, support parishes and schools, and steward the generosity of donors who believe in the mission of the Catholic Church in north-central and northwest Kansas.

The Foundation is also proud to welcome three new members to its Board:

· Jerry Kuckleman of Manhattan, a longtime leader in western Kansas with extensive experience in the beef industry, including his time as President of Innovative Livestock Services.

· Katie Platten of Salina, the Foundation’s founding leader and first CEO, who brings valuable experience in organizational leadership and development.

· Mitzi Richards of Manhattan, who brings a wealth of expertise in nonprofit administration through her work with the KSU Foundation and the Greater Manhattan Community Foundation.

The Great Life Golf &amp; Fitness center will be holding an annual fight against cancer golf tournament, that will be dedicated to two individuals battling cancer.

On Sunday, September 14th at Great Life Golf &amp; Fitness (1800 S Marymount Rd.), get ready to swing for the fight against cancer starting at 12:00 pm.

All proceeds will go towards this year's recipients, Nancy Boyer &amp; Cindi Casanova who are both battling cancer diagnoses in Solomon, KS.

This is the 22nd annual golf tournament hosted by Rob VanDeCreek who started this with his mother 21 years ago, after his aunt (mother's sister) was diagnosed with cancer at the time. He commented from then on, 'it has 'just evolved into an annual event that we do.'

Entry fees for the tournament will be $80/person, which includes a greens fee, cart fee, entry into all of the hole prizes, range balls and burgers from Cozy Inn.

According to VanDeCreek, this event over the past 21 years has raised over $69,000 to individuals and non-profit organizations that fight against cancer.&nbsp;

"We had a record number of teams last year with 27 and I am optimistic&nbsp;that we could have the same this year, so signing up in advance is a big help," said Rob VanDeCreek. "Thank you to everyone once again that has helped either play, sponsor or volunteer their time and effort to keep this event going."

Those willing to sponsor this event, can purchase hole flags for $125, tee signs for $50 or for those wanting to sponsor the entire hole, the cost is $150.

Every spring, John Irvine and his ranch hands line up 300 head of cattle to make one of the biggest investments they can in the future of the seventh-generation Kansas ranch: they collect a few vials of blood to send to the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://ksvdl.org/">Kansas Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory</a>.

Irvine doesn't wait for signs of illness. In his business, one sickened cow or bull, if not caught in time, could mean a devastating blow to the entire herd.

But through the Kansas Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, or KVDL, Irvine and ranchers across the state and nation have access to a whole battery of diagnostic tests that keep their animals healthy and the state's farms, communities and economy safe.

"Because of the KVDL's services, we know that we're giving our customers clean, healthy bulls," said Irvine, a sixth-generation operator of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://irvineranchgenetics.com/">Irvine Ranch</a>&nbsp;in northeastern Kansas. "The lab is a great partner for us, and they enable us to do what we do well."

When diseases can cross cattle pens and county, state and national lines in just a few hours, having a robust disease testing system and provider is crucial, and the KVDL, housed at Kansas State University, has served that role well for the state for several decades.

As the only state-run animal disease laboratory in Kansas, the Kansas Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/seek/fall-2024/ksvdl-protects-kansas-animal-disease-spread/">provides critical diagnostic services that support animal health, public safety and the state’s livestock industry</a>, said Jamie Retallick, director of the lab.

KVDL conducts testing for disease detection, surveillance, and outbreak response, serving veterinarians, producers and public agencies across Kansas and beyond.

KVDL drives $2.5 billion economic impact in Kansas

During a regular year, the KVDL's services add more than $2.5 billion to the state economy, according to a 2024 economic impact report, supporting $5.7 billion in direct livestock industries output and $8.7 billion in total output. In the event of a catastrophic outbreak or disease crisis, the value of the lab's services would balloon to $4.9 billion.

The lab also generates $125.7 million in state sales tax from its testing services, with much of that revenue coming from out-of-state clients.

All told, KVDL's economic impact to operating cost ratio is 113:1.

"The economic impact of livestock production and food safety in Kansas is undeniable," Retallick said. "Ensuring the health of companion animals and wildlife resources is imperative. Protecting Kansans that interact with domestic animals and wildlife is paramount. In addition to service, KVDL faculty and staff provide critical support for a wide range of biologic researchers and train the veterinarians, researchers and diagnosticians of tomorrow."

While much of the laboratory's work supports Kansas' agriculture and livestock animal industry, Retallick emphasized that the lab's work touches the lives of every Kansan.

House pets need biopsies, zoo animals need diagnostics, wildlife animals need monitoring.

Animal health is everyone's health, she said.

"Everyone is connected to animal health in some form," Retallick said. "Whether it's a pet that's a family member or an animal in livestock production, there's an animal connection for everyone. Not many organizations can claim that they're such a critical part of so many industries and areas of society, but we can, and we're proud to continue serving this role for Kansas."

Kansas Legislature invests $128 million in KVDL's defense against animal disease

Despite its extensive diagnostic work and economic impact, the Kansas Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has long kept a low profile on K-State's campus, with its testing and workspaces spread across three buildings on the northern edge of campus.

But the lab will soon get a major upgrade that will better reflect and support its value to the state and region. The Kansas Legislature earlier this spring appropriated $128 million to build a new state-of-the-art facility that will both expand and strengthen the Kansas Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory's output and economic impact.

"This investment from the Kansas Legislature represents far more than just a building," said Richard Linton, K-State president. "It reinforces Kansas’s position as&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.k-state.edu/food-security-biosecurity/">a national leader in animal health and disease prevention</a>&nbsp;by supporting a vital service that protects our state and beyond."

Kansas Sen. Brad Starnes, who championed the lab during the legislative session, said he was proud to support a laboratory that is so critical to the state's well-being.

Between 60-75% of emerging human diseases have animal origins, and as Kansas' early warning system for animal diseases, the KVDL is crucial for the long-term preparedness, health and safety of Kansas as a whole, Starnes said.

“From rural veterinarians to large-scale producers, the work the Kansas Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory does every day touches every corner of the state," Starnes said. "Supporting this new facility for the lab equips it with the tools and space to serve Kansas producers, veterinarians and communities for decades to come."

New KVDL building will be 'a crown jewel for Kansas'

The new lab facility will tentatively be built on campus grounds east of the current College of Veterinary Medicine complex. It will roughly double the 41,000 square feet of space the lab currently occupies across the north end of K-State's campus.

In addition to more efficient sample processing and capacity, the new facility will give the laboratory's staff some much-needed office space and work areas.

"We're going to be a lot more efficient," Retallick said. "By having a top-tier facility, we'll also be able to recruit and retain top-notch staff and faculty. We'll also be able to strengthen the great teamwork we already have when we can all work in the same building, instead of having to shuttle between spaces in three different campus buildings. Because of all that, we'll be able to better protect our state."

Plans for the building are still in preliminary stages, Retallick said, but construction could begin as soon as next summer, with facility completion three years later.

In the meantime, the lab is working with its partners and stakeholders to raise $2 million in private funding to support the facility's construction, in addition to the state's contributions.

But Retallick said even this early, those partners have been enthusiastic to invest in the new facility, since they and many other across Kansas have long benefitted from the laboratory's services and value.

"This will be a crown jewel for Kansans, and we're thankful and proud to have the Legislature's trust in our mission to protect the state from animal diseases," Retallick said. "We're going to continue giving this our all, doing our best for the state."

For Jon Irvine, the sixth-generation operator of Irvine Ranch, the state's investment in the facility is the same one he makes every spring.

"Every test that ranchers send to the KVDL is a small investment to protect the larger investments we make in our cattle and operations," he said. "If we can maintain a clean herd, we can prevent a lot of diseases from emerging in the first place. That's a huge economic benefit, and as new diseases emerge, we're lucky to have a resource like the KVDL that stays at the forefront of these threats."

Saline County Food Action Community Team

<a>The Saline County Food Action Community Team (FACT) invites the public to attend one of two upcoming community listening sessions aimed at completing a comprehensive assessment of the local food system. These sessions are open to all and will focus on gathering feedback about the full scope of Saline County’s food system — from growing and distributing food, to buying, preparing, and eating it.</a>

The listening sessions build on the results of a countywide food survey conducted earlier this year, which collected insights from hundreds of residents. Now, FACT is inviting deeper conversation to better understand the stories behind the survey responses and gather input on community needs, gaps, and opportunities across the food system.

“Our food system is bigger than just access — it includes our farmers, food businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and families,” said Michelle Coats, Chair. “These sessions are about hearing from the people who live and work here, so we can support a healthier, more connected, and more resilient local food system.”

These sessions are open to all and will focus on gathering feedback about the full scope of Saline County’s food system — from growing and distributing food, to buying, preparing, and eating it.</a>The listening sessions build on the results of a countywide food survey conducted earlier this year, which collected insights from hundreds of residents. Now, FACT is inviting deeper conversation to better understand the stories behind the survey responses and gather input on community needs, gaps, and opportunities across the food system.“Our food system is bigger than just access — it includes our farmers, food businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and families,” said Michelle Coats, Chair. “These sessions are about hearing from the people who live and work here, so we can support a healthier, more connected, and more resilient local food system.”The two listening sessions will be held at the following times and locations:<ul>

Two community listening sessions announced to complete Saline County Food System assessment

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) requests comments on the draft Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 2026-2029 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) document.&nbsp;

The STIP is a project specific publication that lists all KDOT administered projects, regardless of funding source, and includes projects for counties and cities as well as projects on the State Highway System.
