ELLSWORTH&nbsp;– The Bureau of Land Management will offer the public an opportunity to adopt a wild horse at an adoption event held at the Svaty Ranch Public Off-Range Pasture on Saturday, June 21.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature 12 yearling and 2-year-old wild horses available for adoption. Pictures and more information about the wild horses available for adoption&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/svatyranch/posts/pfbid02RbQsjJKUmaF14iWbjeoVFCgksMdavk5oHtP2K1Pdfh93DewEjQ6rhmqpW1CTtLql">can be found on Facebook</a>. The Svaty Ranch Public Off-Range Pasture is located at 1016 Avenue J, Ellsworth.

BLM staff will be onsite to assist with and approve applications. To qualify to adopt, applicants must be at least 18 years old, with no record of animal abuse. Qualified homes must have a minimum of four hundred square feet of corral space per animal, with access to food, water, and shelter. A six-foot corral fence is required for adult horses; five-feet for yearlings; and four-and-a-half feet for burros. All animals must be loaded in covered, stock-type trailers with swing gates and sturdy walls and floors.

The only textured hair care service shop in Salina  has recently opened and currently provides 100% natural products to its customers.

'Blessed and Highly Favored (BHF) Beauty Supply' provides 100% natural hair care products with braiding services and is open and running for business.

Owner, Bre Reddin started BHF because she noticed&nbsp;there was a “lack of hair care options for the textured hair care community” in Salina. She&nbsp;realized most people in Salina were traveling as far as Kansas City to receive textured hair care services, and Reddin wanted to make a change after that.

“I just wanted people to have access here (Salina) after seeing the empty void that needed to be filled,” said Reddin.

Before BHF opened, Reddin stated that she was thinking&nbsp;about opening her own business for the last 2 years.&nbsp;She describes what took her so long to start it, was due to a “lack of confidence in herself." Reddin then came to the realization that there was 'never going to be a perfect moment and to just jump on the opportunity.'

“I knew that God placed this on my heart to do this and I did not want this blessing to pass me up,” said Reddin.

Reddin also had many life changes before BHF opened. Reddin was in the process of getting married, buying a house with her husband Zack Reddin and was looking around for awhile for a location.

“He’s (God) has given me this drive and passion to do this,” said Reddin “This is definitely something He (God) has blessed me with by allowing me to use my ability to be creative and be a businesswoman."

Reddin wants her customers to expect to find&nbsp;natural hair care products such as shampoo and conditioners. BHF also supplies braiding services with braiders as well as providing wigs, hair oils and more.&nbsp;

According to Reddin, BHF is a 100% natural hair care shop and there are no chemical products.

Reddin was also won 3rd place in the 2025 "Charlie Walker Pitch Challenge," where she received&nbsp;$3,000 for her business.

Reddin thanked God, her mother, her friend Kayla, "brother in Christ" Zay, her husband Zack Reddin and her church community for BHF.

BHF is located on 1825 S. 9th St. and operates on Monday - Friday from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm, Saturdays from 10:00 am - 7:00 pm.

Salina woman recently opened the only textured hair care service shop in town, shares how it began

The 'Roboyotes,' a robotics program in Salina that builds and crafts robots has just received a $1,000 grant to help fund their program.&nbsp;

At the campus of Kansas Wesleyan University, Clearwave Fiber (internet service provider) presented a $1,000 grant towards the funding of a high school aged student robotics program in Salina, the Roboyotes.&nbsp;

"We love robotics and we want to shift our investment into organizations that meet our goals," said&nbsp;Senior Vice President of Marketing for Clearwave Fiber, Shelley Hallier.

According to Hallier, Clearwave Fiber wants to help&nbsp;rural communities and smaller towns to have all of the “technological advantage” as bigger cities do.&nbsp;

The 'Roboyotes' is a robotics program comprised of high school aged students, ranging from the Saline County and surrounding areas. They are part of the nationwide program "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" (FIRST), which has over 10,000 teams/programs in the US.&nbsp;

The Roboyotes are the 10682nd team to join the program, also known as 'Team 10682.'

Team 10682 built "Zippy," a robot that competed at the First Robotics Competition (FRC) in the '2025 Reefscape' which was the team's first robot competition to compete in.&nbsp;

Lead Mentor and Coach for the Roboyotes, Sheila Alstatt stated that any high school aged student whether from any of the surrounding areas of Saline County, is welcome to join. She also commented that students can&nbsp;get involved by doing many tasks and not just by building a robot. 

These tasks include design, marketing, crafts, technology and much more.

“Even if you are not necessarily that much in to building robots, you can still join and we can find jobs for everybody," said Alstatt.

Before the Roboyotes started, they were formerly known as "3172" and the team was unable to be hosted by their former location. After having to rebuild connections with sponsors and mentors, they successfully managed to relocate to Kansas Wesleyan University.

Transformative scattered homes across Salina are now available for those who want 'quality affordable housing.'&nbsp;

Thanks to the help of various partners and investors, Salina Housing Authority's 'Salina RAD Homes' also known as "Vanguard Apartments," has completed with co-developer, Knight Development a 118 scattered-site project that are located at various addresses throughout Salina. This $24 million project, consists of&nbsp;single-family homes, duplexes, quadruplexes, and row houses. These units include 10 one-bedroom, 56 two-bedroom and 52 three-bedroom homes with each unit receiving critical upgrades to meet modern standards for energy efficiency, accessibility and safety.

These 'quality affordable homes' were made possible through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) program, which is a program designed to preserve and improve public housing and certain HUD-assisted properties.&nbsp;

CEO of Knight Development Co., Holly Knight stated that they wanted to make "home ownership available for those who want it." She commented on how long this project took, before it came into fruition.

"From start to finish it took about 3 years," said Knight. "These homes are all scattered into the fabrics of each neighborhood and when people have a sense of home it is just more of a sense of pride."

Knight explained that the Salina Housing Authority along with CHDO (Community Housing Development Corporation of Central Kansas) are 'doing a really good job' of moving people from rental homes into home ownership.

R&amp;B/Soul band "Rudy Love &amp; The Encore" from Wichita, will be providing a free concert on Friday, June 20th as part of “R&amp;B in the Park” at 6:00 pm in Oakdale Park. 

Presented by the Salina Juneteenth Committee, the night features music from Rudy Love &amp; The Encore comprised of Rudy Love Jr.&nbsp;(vocals &amp; keys),&nbsp;Marrque Nunley&nbsp;(drums),&nbsp;Rachelle Love&nbsp;(percussion),&nbsp;Mariel Jacoda&nbsp;(vocals),&nbsp;Sherdeill (DJ) Breathett&nbsp;(bass) and&nbsp;Willy Simms&nbsp;(guitar), a Smoky Hill River Festival favorite in 2022 and 2023. Salina Juneteenth's "R&B in the Park" hosting Wichita R&B/Soul band to perform on Friday at Oakdale

Salina Police arrest three suspects who allegedly forced entry into an abandoned building and attempted to steal items.

According to the Salina Police Department on Tuesday, June 17th at around 6:45 pm, police were called to respond to an abandoned building in the 600 block of Reynolds. It was reported that neighbors in the area saw three individuals enter into the building.

When officers arrived to the scene, they were able to determine that a window on the building had been 'forced open.' Furthermore, officers heard movement inside the building and began to order the people to exit the building.

After officers informed the individuals to exit the building, they reportedly arrested two females and one male suspects. The suspects were identified as:&nbsp;

Brittney Smith (25) of Holton, KS; Stephanie Judd (38) of Salina and Joseph Mastin (25) of Salina.

Allegedly, the suspects had 'forced entry and were attempting to take miscellaneous items from the building.' Police determined that total attempted loss and damage was valued at $485.

Smith, Judd and Mastin are facing charges of&nbsp;Burglary, Theft and Damage to Property.

Salina PostSalina Police arrest three suspects who allegedly forced entry into an abandoned building and attempted to steal items.According to the Salina Police Department on Tuesday, June 17th at around 6:45 pm, police were called to respond to an abandoned building in the 600 block of Reynolds. It was reported that neighbors in the area saw three individuals enter into the building.When officers arrived to the scene, they were able to determine that a window on the building had been 'forced open.' Furthermore, officers heard movement inside the building and began to order the people to exit the building.After officers informed the individuals to exit the building, they reportedly arrested two females and one male suspects. The suspects were identified as:&nbsp;Brittney Smith (25) of Holton, KS; Stephanie Judd (38) of Salina and Joseph Mastin (25) of Salina.Allegedly, the suspects had 'forced entry and were attempting to take miscellaneous items from the building.' Police determined that total attempted loss and damage was valued at $485.Smith, Judd and Mastin are facing charges of&nbsp;Burglary, Theft and Damage to Property.

The Saline County Emergency Management team continues to monitor severe weather conditions and the associated flood risks, as the region enters an active weather period today through tonight on Tuesday, June 17th.

According to Saline County Emergency Management, the National Weather Service has placed much of central and south-central Kansas, including Saline County, under a 'moderate risk' for severe storms beginning this afternoon and continuing into early Wednesday morning. 

Residents should expect the potential for:

Wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph, tennis ball-sized hail, a few tornadoes﻿ and heavy rainfall that could result in localized flooding overnight.

Saline County Emergency Management also notes that&nbsp;area rivers and streams are forecast to rise significantly.&nbsp;

Mulberry Creek near Salina: Expected to crest near 26.5 feet, reaching major flood stage.

Smoky Hill River near Mentor: Forecasted crest near 24.2 feet, approaching moderate flood stage.

Smoky Hill River near New Cambria: Projected to crest around 30.3 feet, above moderate flood stage.

River levels are currently well below flood stage but are expected to rise rapidly as rainfall moves through the area. Residents in low-lying areas near rivers, streams and creeks should prepare for possible flooding and monitor conditions closely. Saline County encourages residents to not drive through flooded roadways and to always follow official detours and barricades.

Saline County Emergency Management remains in close coordination with the National Weather Service and regional response partners and will provide additional information as conditions warrant.

The US National Weather Service Wichita, KS has issued a watch for scattered showers and storms to continue across portions of central and south-central Kansas on Tuesday June 17th. 

According to the National Weather Service, these showers and storms will continue through at least 10:00 am on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service also reported of isolated hail up to ping pong size possibly occurred until earlier on Tuesday at 7:00 am with frequent lightning.

Scattered showers and storms for Saline County to continue throughout Tuesday morning  

This is day 1 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Harvest moved into southern Kansas about a week ago, but since then it has been slow going. With scattered showers and high humidity, most days the combines can’t get rolling until late-afternoon. There are reports that farmers have gotten into dry fields along the I-135 corridor, as far north as Mitchell County.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is only 3 percent complete, well behind 25 percent complete last year and behind 11 percent on average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 15, 2025. Winter wheat conditions were rated at 21 percent poor to very poor, 30 percent fair and 49 percent good to excellent.

Chris Stevens, General Manager of Farmers Coop Grain Association in Conway Springs, reports that harvest began last Monday, June 9, but it has been hit or miss. They’ve only taken in about 10% of the bushels they expect, but should be halfway complete by now. So far, it’s too early and too spotty to tell how test weights are going to average, but they’ve heard yield reports from 26 to 50 bushels per acre, which would be an average crop. He mentioned that some of the later maturing varieties had the advantage this year because of the rains. The area doesn’t have any disease pressure so far this year. Stevens is hoping that forecasted showers dodge them and it gets hot and dry for harvest this weekend.

However, the National Weather Service in Wichita is forecasting thunderstorms across the harvest area Tuesday afternoon. Winds up to 80 mph, hail up to tennis ball size and heavy rainfall are all possible.

Chris Fryer, Grain Merchandiser with CoMark Equity Alliance LLC in Cheney, says they’ve only taken in about 5% to date, even though harvest started last Tuesday, June 10. They would normally be about a third done by now, but rains have kept harvest from progressing. The quality has been very good so far, and yields are better than last year.

Kansas Wheat: 2025 Harvest day one 

A water main break on Crawford and S. Ohio streets which occurred earlier in Salina on Monday, has backed up traffic to one lane and alternative routes are highly encouraged.&nbsp;

According to a City of Salina Water Department Official, a 6-inch water main break that occurred on Crawford and S. Ohio streets by Subway and the old Original Grande has backed up to one lane going eastbound from Lewis to S. Ohio streets.&nbsp;

Traffic is currently being backed up past Roach St.

The Water Department strongly encourages residents to avoid the area and seek alternative routes. Repairs are currently being made to solve the issue. 

According to the Water Department, repairs may take the entire evening of Monday.

The Water Department also stated that all businesses on Crawford between Lewis and S. Ohio streets are without water.&nbsp;

Help Hope Live - Trusted Medical Fundraising

HUTCHINSON - Monte McClurg of Hutchinson, KS spent decades living an active and energetic life with nationwide recognition as the “camel man.” Settling into semi-retirement to care for his young daughter, Monte was blindsided by liver disease in 2024. He and his family have been stunned by the generosity of their community: they raised $6,300 in just 2 weeks through the nonprofit "Help Hope Live."

Monte was known nationwide as the “camel man,” a racing camel caretaker and manager of an exotic animal traveling petting zoo.

When his daughter, Morgan, was born in 2018, Monte went into semi-retirement from his exotic career to help ensure a brighter future for his family, including reliable health insurance. Now 6 years old, Morgan “is the light of his life and the reason he lives,” explained Molly, Monte’s sister.

Monte experienced undiagnosed symptoms for several years, but in August 2024, he was rushed to the hospital, swollen and jaundiced. He was diagnosed with liver failure. After multiple medical procedures, Monte must now remain hospitalized until he can get a life-saving liver and kidney transplant.

Because Monte has been unable to work, he will lose his health insurance plan starting in June 2025. To help cover the extreme out-of-pocket costs of a transplant, his loved ones started a fundraising campaign with the trusted national nonprofit Help Hope Live on May 14.

The fundraising campaign raised over $6,300 in the first 2 weeks. Monte and his family were stunned. As of June 16, they have raised over $6,500.

“We received $1,000 in donations over the first hour,” shared Molly. “It was enough to help cover a giant medical expense. I couldn’t help but cry.”

Motorcyclist sent to the hospital when a driver's view was 'blocked,' before an accident occurred

Argument leads to a scuffle, a gun sounding off and an arrest at a Salina home.

According to the Salina Police Department on Friday, June 13th at around 9:30 pm, officers were sent to respond to the report of a shooting that occurred at a home on the 1000 block of E. Iron. It was reported that a 46-year old male arrived to a 57-year old male's home, who is identified as Patrick Syler.

Police stated that the 46-year old male went to Syler's home to "move some furniture." When the male arrived, Syler suspected him of stealing an RC (Radio Controlled) vehicle and an argument surfaced afterwards.

Allegedly, Syler pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the male. Subsequently, the male and Syler got into a scuffle and during the event, the gun sounded off. Police reported that a bullet went through the front of the house and a 71-year old male that was standing on the front porch of the home "received a small abrasion to his midsection."

Police did not confirm if the bullet of the gun struck the 71-year old male and he did not need any medical treatment.

A neighbor of the block reported to police about hearing a gunshot and when officers arrived to the scene, they came in contact with the 46-year old and Syler. After further investigation, officers arrested Syler without incident. Officers also located illegal drugs and a 9mm gun.

Syler was booked into the Saline County and is facing the following charges:

Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, Possession of an Opiate, Possession of Marijuana and Drug Paraphernalia.

Police were not able to determine why the 71-year old male was present at the home.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Friday, June 13th at around 9:30 pm, officers responded to a domestic disturbance that occurred on the 200 block of N. Oakdale. It was reported that a 29-year old female victim who lives at the residence, was with a 30-year old male identified as Adrian Del Real.

Allegedly, Del Real and the victim got into an argument on the driveway of the home. Del Real wanted to see the victim's phone and decided to push her. After she was pushed, Police stated the victim was "struck in the bridge of her nose, causing her to bleed."&nbsp;

Subsequently, the victim then went inside the home and went into a bathroom. Del Real then followed her as the argument continued, and it was reported that he "ripped off her apple watch and threw it into the toilet." The victim was able to leave the bathroom and get away from Del Real.&nbsp;

Police stated that Del Real called SPD and when officers arrived to the home, he was taken into custody without incident.

Del Real was booked into the Saline County Jail and is facing the following charges; Robbery, Criminal Deprivation of Property and Domestic Battery.

Saline County Jail Bookings, June 16

Two delegates from the 2025 session of the <a href="https://ksbstate.org/">American Legion Boys State of Kansas</a> have been elected by their peers to represent Kansas Boys State as senators at <a href="https://www.legion.org/boysnation/">Boys Nation</a> this summer. The announcement was made this morning during an assembly at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

Tristan Jenkins, a resident of Olathe, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Olathe South High School, and Garrett Li, a resident of Overland Park, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Olathe North High School will attend Boys Nation, Friday, July 18 through Saturday, July 26, at Marymount University in Arlington, Va. Earlier in the week Li was elected as the Kansas Boys State governor

Jared Tucker, a resident of Fall River, Kan., and a senior-to-be at West Elk High School in Howard, Kan., and Louis McVey, a resident of Otis, Kan., and a senior-to-be at Otis-Bison High School, were elected as the first alternate and second alternate, respectively.

At Boys Nation, Jenkins and Li will join representatives from each of the 49 Boys State programs across the country (Hawaii does not have a Boys State program) to receive an education on the structure and function of federal government. At the event, each delegate acts as a senator from his Boys State. The young lawmakers caucus at the beginning of the session, then organize into committees and conduct hearings on bills submitted by program delegates. Senators also learn the proper method of handling bills, according to U.S. Senate rules.

Participation in the political process is emphasized throughout the week, including organization of party conventions, and nominating and electing a president and vice president. The week of government training also includes lectures, forums and visits to federal agencies, national shrines, institutions, memorials and historical sites. On Capitol Hill, Boys Nation senators meet with elected officials from their home states.


High school students from across the State of Kansas are participating in the 2025 session of the <a href="https://ksbstate.org/">American Legion Boys State of Kansas</a>, which started on June 1 and ends tomorrow (Saturday, June 7), at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This is the program’s 33rd consecutive session at KSU and 87th overall. The Kansas Boys State program includes students who have just completed their junior year of high school (will be seniors in the fall) and sophomore year of high school (will be juniors in the fall).

The objective of the ALBSK is to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. Kansas Boys State provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility. Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.
