Traci Brimhall, Kansas Poet Laureate, curated this year’s series. Brimhall selected poets with a broad range of perspectives, who will share their work in Salina this April.

“Originally from Odesa, Ukraine, Luisa has lived in Kansas for most of her life. I knew Luisa’s poems before I was lucky enough to know her as a person, and on both the page and in person discovered she’s remarkably funny. Her poems defy so much of what I thought poems could do. Celebrities show up, pop culture is everywhere, and she can make you laugh and cry in the span of a page,” says Brimhall.

Luisa Muradyan is the author of I Make Jokes When I'm Devastated (Bridwell Press, 2025) When the World Stopped Touching (YesYes Books, 2027), and American Radiance (University of Nebraska Press, 2018). She is the winner of the 2017 Raz/ Shumaker Prairie Schooner Book Prize and a member of the Cheburashka Collective. Luisa Muradyan to read in Salina Spring Poetry Series, April 22

MANHATTAN, Kan. – A Kansas 4-H official is praising the work of volunteers across the state, indicating that their contribution to the state’s largest youth leadership program is vital to the development of many Kansas kids. Sarah Maass, director of the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansas4-h.org/">Kansas 4-H program</a>, said there were approximately 4,196 adult volunteers who helped with various 4-H activities during the most recently completed program year.“Volunteers play a crucial role in program delivery and advocacy of our extension and 4-H programs,” Maass said. “Our organization would not be where it is today without the work and support of our volunteer&nbsp;base.”

Maass cited a previous study reporting that volunteers donate an average nine hours per month, which translates to 37,764 volunteers hours in Kansas. According to Independent Sector – a coalition of nonprofits, foundations and corporate giving programs – the value of one volunteer hour in the United States is $33.49. Doing the math, the contribution of volunteers to the Kansas 4-H program during the past program year topped $1.26 million.

Recognizing that impact, the Kansas 4-H program is joining in National Volunteer Week, a national celebration for non-profit groups set for April 20-26 to recognize the contributions of those who donate their time to worthy causes team. 

Richard Becker of Manhattan became a 4-H volunteer in 2005 when his children enrolled in the program. Since then, he has become a Level II certified rifle and pistol instructor, helping to train other instructors in the 4-H Shooting Sports program.“4-H promotes positive youth development, no matter the activity,” Becker said. “I can’t think of a greater cause then to invest in our youth, who will be tomorrow’s leaders. There are so many friendships to be made locally, at the state level and even nationally.”&nbsp;

Saline County Jail Bookings, April  15

SHERMAN—The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the victims of a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 in Sherman County approximately 9 miles east of Goodland that occurred before 3:30p.m. March 14.

According to the Patrol the victims included 20-year-old Dawson Hogan of Salina; 72-year-old Larry Smith of Sharon Springs; 57-year-old Manuel Alacron of Dodge City; 31-year-old Mario Juarez of Garden City; 24-year-old Baiel Sharshembiev of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; 48-year-old Carlos Arzate of Shattuck, Oklahoma; 61-year-old Stephane Purcell of Evansville Indiana and 60-year-old Giovanni Stephan of Troy Michigan.

A total of seventy-one&nbsp; vehicles were identified as being involved in the collision event, resulting in eight fatalities and forty-six injured who were transported to local hospitals. 

The patrol will complete multiple motor vehicle collision reports to document and separate the collisions that occurred within the event. Investigators believe the separate collisions occurred between the times of approximately 3:20pm - 3:35pm (CDT). Due to the extreme circumstances the exact sequence of events is is still under investigation.&nbsp;

Patrol IDs 8 who died in NW Kansas dust storm crash

<a href="http://www.theyardsalina.com">The Yard</a> invites families, fans, and community members to Bill Burke Park on Thursday, April 24, for an evening of baseball, fun, and community celebration during the 2nd Annual Miracle Game, presented by First Bank Kansas, and the Crown Youth League Opening Ceremonies, sponsored in part by Bennington State Bank and the KC Royals RADS Program.

The Crown Youth League Opening Ceremonies will run from 4:45 to 7:30 p.m. and include a parade of youth league teams and jersey handouts for more than 400 players. Bounce houses from Bounce-A-Roos will be available for kids, and food trucks will serve eventgoers throughout the evening. 

Food vendors include Samantha Fairchild’s Cookies, Bobby’s Food Co. from Topeka, Frostbite Ice, and The Amazing Mexican Food Truck, which sold out during last year’s event. A home run derby, games, giveaways, and player swag bags will also be part of the celebration.

From 5:45 to 7:30 p.m., the 2nd Annual Miracle Game will take place. This special T-ball game is designed for players with special needs and creates an inclusive, fun environment for all. The game will begin with a ceremonial first pitch thrown by Cameron Yohe, a local <a href="http://NubAbility.com">NubAbility.com</a> coach and former camper.

Catching the first pitch will be Brayden Blake, the 2025 Major League Citizen Award winner and founder of Salina’s Miracle Game.

“I wanted to give an opportunity for everyone to have an equal playing field and to let everyone, no matter the circumstances, get to play this beautiful game,” Blake said. “I wanted our community to be involved so the event could be a positive influence &amp; environment and showcase all the strong potential Salina has towards inclusiveness. Sometimes being around people who have unique abilities from ourselves can be intimidating, but it’s important for kids my age who also love baseball to step out of our comfort zones to help everyone enjoy this game &amp; give all some time to shine.”

Members of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce are also invited for a special “Chamber After Hours” tailgate experience. Attendees can enjoy food, baseball, and community connection. Giveaways from the Kansas City Royals will be available to those who bring business cards.

The Yard to host 2nd annual Miracle Game and Crown Youth League Opening Ceremonies April 24

Monte Yellow Bird Sr., a Native American artist, will present “If You’re Going To Shine, Shine Brightly,” at Cloud County Community College’s Cook Series on Thursday, April 24. The event will be at 7:00 p.m. at the college’s Cook Theatre on the Concordia campus. All Cook Series events are free and open to the public.

Monte Yellow Bird, Sr. signs his work with the name he was given through ceremony, Black Pinto Horse.&nbsp;He is devoted to a positive expression of the harmonic balance between humanity and nature. He is the son of Willard (Wolf Trail) Yellow Bird, a descendant of Bears Teeth &amp; Iron Bear and Magdalen (Corn Tassel) Youngbird/Yellow Bird a descendant of Strikes Enemy &amp; Sitting Bear.&nbsp;

While in high school, his math teacher recognized his artistic talent, introducing him to the renowned Institute of American Indian Arts of Santa Fe, New Mexico.&nbsp;As a 16-year-old that had never left the reservation, he credits this experience as life-changing saying,&nbsp;“It evoked a pride of my culture &amp; a new self-identity.”

Years later, Yellow Bird furthered his art &amp; history studies at North Dakota State University in Fargo, majoring in History Education with an Art minor. In 2002, he earned a BFA from Minot State University in North Dakota.

Since 2004 he has owned and operated his fine arts and educational company, Black Pinto Horse Fine Arts.&nbsp;Yellow Bird is represented by galleries, museums, and educational institutions both nationally and internationally. He attends prestigious Indian Art Markets such as Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard, and Eiteljorg Museums, and has collectors worldwide, such as art in the permanent collection of the Volkenkunde Museum of Leiden Netherlands and the Nelson- Atkins Museum in Kansas City. 

Through his art and teaching, he offers us a multitude of gifts, and his optimism shines in his motto: “We are on this earth for such a short time, if we are going to shine, shine brightly."

This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the Charles and Marian Cook Series at Cloud County Community College. The Cooks were travelers who wanted to bring the world to those who could not travel themselves. More than 80 events have been presented through the sponsorship of the Cook Foundation and the Division of Humanities, Social Sciences and Business at Cloud. It was always Marian Cook’s wishes that all Cook Series events be free and open to the public.

He is the son of Willard (Wolf Trail) Yellow Bird, a descendant of Bears Teeth &amp; Iron Bear and Magdalen (Corn Tassel) Youngbird/Yellow Bird a descendant of Strikes Enemy &amp; Sitting Bear.&nbsp;While in high school, his math teacher recognized his artistic talent, introducing him to the renowned Institute of American Indian Arts of Santa Fe, New Mexico.&nbsp;As a 16-year-old that had never left the reservation, he credits this experience as life-changing saying,&nbsp;“It evoked a pride of my culture &amp; a new self-identity.”Years later, Yellow Bird furthered his art &amp; history studies at North Dakota State University in Fargo, majoring in History Education with an Art minor. In 2002, he earned a BFA from Minot State University in North Dakota.Since 2004 he has owned and operated his fine arts and educational company, Black Pinto Horse Fine Arts.&nbsp;Yellow Bird is represented by galleries, museums, and educational institutions both nationally and internationally. A Salina man was arrested Sunday morning following a domestic disturbance in the 1300 block of Derby Avenue.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, officers were dispatched at approximately 9:40 a.m. after a third-party caller reported receiving a text from a 36-year-old woman asking them to contact 911 on her behalf.

When officers arrived, they spoke with the woman, who reported that she had gotten into an argument with 35-year-old Darnell Roberson, who also lives at the residence. She told police that after she went to lie down, Roberson forced her into another room, strangled her, and struck her head on the ground multiple times. 

She was eventually able to get up and move to a different room, but Roberson followed and choked her again, according to the report.

"The victim did not lose consciousness and was able to send a text message to a third party asking for help. Officers took Roberson into custody at the scene without incident," Feldman said.&nbsp;

Roberson was booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery, and a warrant for failure to appear.

The 2025 class will be the 49th group to be inducted into the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame. A luncheon and induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the Dodge City Civic Center, 2112 First Ave.

Founded in 1977, the Kansas Teachers’ Hall of Fame was the first state hall of fame in the nation dedicated to honoring outstanding educators. Since its establishment, more than 450 teachers have been inducted.

Nominees are selected based on a set of rigorous criteria, including a minimum of 25 years of teaching in Kansas K–12 schools. Additional qualifications include outstanding teaching performance, positive student and parent interactions, community involvement, a commitment to professional development, and a philosophy of education that serves as a model for others.

Nominations are submitted from each of Kansas’ twelve educational districts, and final selections are made by a state committee that meets each March.

Salina educator among 2025 Kansas Teachers' Hall of Fame inductees

The Friends of the Salina Public Library will host their annual Spring Book Sale in the lower level of the library on April 24, 26 and 27. The sale will feature a wide selection of used books at discounted prices.

The event kicks off on Thursday, April 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Friends Preview Sale. Only Friends of the Library members may attend this early shopping opportunity. Memberships will be available for purchase at the door.

There will be no sale on Friday, April 25.

The sale reopens to the public on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and continues on Sunday, April 27 from Noon to 3 p.m., when shoppers can fill a bag of books for just $5.

The Kansas Highway Patrol Honor Guard will be conducting a 21-gun salute training exercise today, April 14, on the Troop J Academy grounds in Salina.

The public is advised that the training will involve the use of blank rounds, which may result in the sound of simulated gunfire in the surrounding area. Residents should not be alarmed.

KHP officials noted the importance of this training in preparing to honor those who have served with dignity and respect.

“We appreciate your understanding and support as we continue honoring those who have served with dignity,” the agency shared in a public notice.

Pavement will be removed, and a water main will be disconnected from service. Work is expected to last one week and be completed by April 22, 2025, weather permitting.

Appropriate barriers will be in place to ensure the safety of workers. Motorists may encounter minor delays and are encouraged to avoid work zones when possible.

City of Salina announces construction at Wayne Ave./Huntington Road

Ninth Street, becoming the region’s first location solely focused on Kubota and its family of brands, including Land Pride, Great Plains, and Polaris.

The dealership marked its launch with a two-day grand opening celebration April 9–10, held in conjunction with Kubota’s nationwide Orange Days sales event and the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce. The festivities included hands-on equipment demonstrations, staff meet-and-greets, food, and exclusive promotional offers.

"Kubota has become such a familiar name in Salina and Salina’s advanced manufacturing industry, and so it’s exciting to now have the region’s first dealership focused solely on those products," said Salina Area Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Renee Duxler. "The Chamber supports regional farmers and ranchers in a number of different ways—especially through our agriculture committee—and so its ultimately very satisfying to see business continue to grow and expand around the ag sector here."

The new location expands Kubota's footprint in Salina, <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/10187bed-15fe-4df8-99df-9c828d1dd7d5">where the company has already established manufacturing operations.</a>&nbsp;In addition to producing equipment locally, Kubota products are now available for purchase and service at the new retail site.

General Manager Mark Johnson, a 27-year industry veteran with experience at Land Pride, leads the dealership. 

“They are going to be able to buy from the smallest lawnmower Kubota makes up to the largest construction pieces," Johnson said. "Folks will be able to find the perfect piece of machinery that fits their farm and ranch needs.”

Strategically located near I-135 and I-70, and within close proximity to <a href="https://www.kubotausa.com/media-center/2020/08/13/great-plains-manufacturing-and-kubota-finalize-plans-and-building-purchase-to-expand-assembly-operations-for-kubota-equipment-in-salina-kansas">Kubota’s R&amp;D center</a> and <a href="https://www.greatplainsmfg.com/divisions">Great Plains Manufacturing,</a> Kubota of Salina is designed to provide quick and convenient access for both local and regional customers.

The next installment of A Prairie Conversation with Wes Jackson and Friends will feature a poetic twist. Renowned poets Robert Hass and Jesse Nathan will join Jackson for an evening exploring ecology, history, literature, and visions of a sustainable future.

The event is scheduled for 6–8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, in Room 201 of Peters Science Hall on the Kansas Wesleyan University campus. Admission is free.

Jackson, a 1958 KWU graduate, professor emeritus of biology, and co-founder of The Land Institute, will moderate the discussion and an audience Q&amp;A following the presentations.

Hass, a former U.S. Poet Laureate (1995–1997), is the author of Time and Materials, which won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. His other acclaimed works include Sun Under Wood, Summer Snow, and Poet in the New World, a 2024 release of translated works by Czeslaw Milosz. Hass is professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley.

Joining the conversation is Jesse Nathan, a Kansas-raised poet whose debut collection, Eggtooth, was published in 2023 and received the Great Lakes Colleges Association's New Writers Award and the Housatonic Book Prize. A Bethel College graduate, Nathan’s poetry has appeared in The Paris Review, Best American Poetry, The New Republic, and the I-70 Review. He teaches English at UC Berkeley and frequently returns to his family farm near Turkey Creek in McPherson County.

Books by both poets will be available for purchase at Red Fern Booksellers in downtown Salina.

In the days leading up to the poetry conversation, Kansas Wesleyan and The Land Institute will host a weekend of events celebrating Kernza—a perennial grain developed under the guidance of Dr. Wes Jackson that has the potential to revolutionize sustainable farming.

 The celebration begins Friday, April 25, with free public tours of the Heartland RIFT farms and The Land Institute, followed by lunch and a spring plant identification walk. That evening, guests are invited to The Farm and Odd Fellows in Minneapolis for a beer tasting featuring Kernza-based brews, dinner, and screenings of the documentary Beer Saves the World.

The weekend concludes Saturday, April 26, with the red carpet world premiere of Prairie Prophecy, a new feature-length documentary about Jackson’s life and legacy, at the Stiefel Theatre in downtown Salina. Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Robert Hass to join Wes Jackson and Jesse Nathan for KWU event

NEWMAN: Scrambling over egg prices? Check out these clever Easter, everyday alternatives

Tracie Betz, an early childhood special education preschool teacher at Quinter Elementary School, Quinter USD 293, and Tranda Strnad, art teacher at Republic County High School, Republic County USD 109, were named Region 1 finalists for the 2026 Kansas Teacher of the Year (KTOY) award program during a ceremony on Saturday, April 12.

This award recognizes excellent teaching in the elementary and secondary classrooms of the state. The KTOY Region 1 awards banquet took place at Tony’s Pizza Event Center, in Salina.

As finalists for the Kansas Teacher of the Year distinction, Betz and Strnad each will receive a $2,000 cash award from Security Benefit, the major corporate partner for the KTOY program. In addition, they are each now eligible to be named Kansas Teacher of the Year, which will be announced during a ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 20, in Wichita.

Betz and Strnad were among six KTOY semifinalists from Region 1, which covers Kansas’s 1st U.S. congressional district.

The other Region 1 KTOY semifinalists are Whitney George, fourth grade teacher at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School, Manhattan-Ogden USD 383; Katherine Jimenez, a music teacher at Hugoton Elementary School, Hugoton USD 210; Mandy Burger, family and consumer science teacher at Ellsworth High School, Ellsworth USD 327; and Mark Shera Cruz, a physics, human antimony and physiology teacher at Garden City High School, Garden City USD 457.

Each of the semifinalists will receive a red marble apple with a wooden base, compliments of The Master Teacher in Manhattan.

This year, 136 educators across the state were nominated for the Kansas Teacher of the Year distinction.

Nominations are made in each of the four regions in the state. The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE), sponsor of the KTOY program, appoints regional selection panels comprised of teachers, education administrators and business representatives to select semifinalists and finalists from each region.

Each panel selects six semifinalists - three elementary teachers and three secondary teachers. From those semifinalists, the panel in each region then selects one elementary finalist and one secondary finalist. The Kansas Teacher of the Year is selected from among the state’s eight regional finalists.

The mission of the KTOY program is to build and utilize a network of exemplary teachers who are leaders in the improvement of schools, student performance and the teaching profession.

Members of the Kansas Teacher of the Year team, comprised of the Teacher of the Year and regional finalists, serve as ambassadors for education in Kansas, making public appearances across the state to promote education and the teaching profession.

The individual selected as the Kansas Teacher of the Year is eligible for selection as the National Teacher of the Year.

The National Teacher of the Year program is a project of the Council of Chief State School Officers in partnership with the Voya Foundation.

K-STATE UNIVERSITY NEWS AND COMMUNICATIONS&nbsp;

MANHATTAN — On Kansas State University's inaugural Day of Giving, Wildcats across the world shared their pride for academic programs, student success and innovative research. More than 1,600 donors invested $3.4 million in areas across the institution, supporting students, faculty research and college initiatives.

K-State Day of Giving, a 24-hour giving challenge and celebration of everything that makes K-State special, invited the Wildcat nation to unite and share their love for the university, displaying that when Wildcats come together, we can do good for Kansas and the world.

"The tremendous outpouring of generosity we witnessed during our K-State Day of Giving reaffirms what I've always known about our university community — when called upon, our alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students respond with extraordinary heart and commitment," said President Richard Linton. "Every gift represents a personal investment in our shared future and a profound belief in our mission."

Throughout the day, K-Staters supported areas they were most passionate about. Student groups, including the Concrete Canoe team, the K-State Rodeo team and the Wildcat Rocketry team, received donations empowering student engagement and learning beyond the classroom. The Global Impact in Sorghum initiative, which conducts research to improve sorghum production techniques and introduce improved seed, saw support for its mission and used social media to share its impact with audiences. The College of Business Administration rallied funds for applied learning experiences that prepare students for careers. Other significant gifts went to All Faiths Chapel and Cats' Cupboard, a vital resource for enhancing food security at K-State.

Departments across campus competed for bonus funds through various leaderboards and challenges. The College of Business Administration led the way in total dollars raised, bringing in more than $1 million, while the Cats' Cupboard engaged the most donors to secure the top spot in the participation leaderboard with 203 donors.

Online "Purple Power Hour" social media challenges fueled engagement and competition. K-Staters participated in challenges ranging from sharing their most beloved K-State tradition to sharing a K-State pet photo to unlock bonus dollars for their favorite departments. The K-State Marching Band and Cats' Cupboard each claimed two challenge victories.

While many K-State alumni and friends engaged and supported virtually via social media, at K-State's Manhattan campus, students, faculty, staff and community members were also able to play a hands-on role in shaping the success of their favorite K-State programs. At Bosco Student Plaza, they gathered to celebrate, participate in challenges and interactive activities, take photos with Willie the Wildcat and directly impact the areas they love.

"In the face of a challenge, you often hear K-Staters say, 'Where there's a Wildcat, there's a way,'" said KSU Foundation President and CEO Greg Willems. "Yesterday, K-Staters did just that. We are so grateful to each and every donor who participated in our first K-State Day of Giving. You created a brighter future for K-State and its students."

K-State Day of Giving is a partnership between the university and the Kansas State University Foundation, K-State's strategic partner for philanthropy.

"Our supporters' generosity transforms countless student lives, advances groundbreaking research and strengthens our capacity to serve," Linton said. "I couldn't be more grateful for this vote of confidence in where we're headed."

More than 1,600 donors invested $3.4 million in areas across the institution, supporting students, faculty research and college initiatives.K-State Day of Giving, a 24-hour giving challenge and celebration of everything that makes K-State special, invited the Wildcat nation to unite and share their love for the university, displaying that when Wildcats come together, we can do good for Kansas and the world."The tremendous outpouring of generosity we witnessed during our K-State Day of Giving reaffirms what I've always known about our university community — when called upon, our alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students respond with extraordinary heart and commitment," said President Richard Linton. Student groups, including the Concrete Canoe team, the K-State Rodeo team and the Wildcat Rocketry team, received donations empowering student engagement and learning beyond the classroom. The Global Impact in Sorghum initiative, which conducts research to improve sorghum production techniques and introduce improved seed, saw support for its mission and used social media to share its impact with audiences. The College of Business Administration rallied funds for applied learning experiences that prepare students for careers. Other significant gifts went to All Faiths Chapel and Cats' Cupboard, a vital resource for enhancing food security at K-State.Departments across campus competed for bonus funds through various leaderboards and challenges. The College of Business Administration led the way in total dollars raised, bringing in more than $1 million, while the Cats' Cupboard engaged the most donors to secure the top spot in the participation leaderboard with 203 donors.Online "Purple Power Hour" social media challenges fueled engagement and competition. Located at 199 North Santa Fe Avenue in downtown Salina, near City Lights Stage, the market brings together local farmers, artisans, and residents. It provides a space for vendors to sell fresh, locally grown food, handmade crafts, and value-added products.

The market operates on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. from May 24 to October 18. Vendors within a 75-mile radius of Salina are given preference, and priority is given to those who grow or produce their products. The market provides an opportunity to sell directly to the public, enhancing access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food in the area.
