Saline County Jail Bookings, December 5

The Salina Fire Department (SFD) are currently investigating an uninhabited house fire, as the same occurrence and area of incident happened in the past.

According to SFD on Thursday morning a home in the 200 block of S. College, was reportedly on fire. When SFD arrived to the scene, they discovered the home was uninhabited with windows boarded up.&nbsp;

Additionally, there was no power, nor electricity operating at the home.&nbsp;

The fire damaged both inside and outside of the home, as it mainly consumed the rear-end of the house.

The cause of fire is unknown at this time.

Chief Shane Pearson stated the home had a fire occurring in the same area 3-4 years ago. The house was occupied with residents at that time, and the cause of fire was unknown as well.

The Salina Police Department (SPD) are seeking tips regarding a business burglary.

According to SPD, on Friday, November 28, between the hours of midnight and 6:00 pm an unknown suspect(s) broke into the door of the&nbsp;Town and Country Repair (325 S. Clark).

The suspect(s) rummaged through multiple drawers stealing approximately $100. 

Total loss including  damage was valued at $1100.

Salina YMCA making a splash this holiday season with Holiday Family Movie Night

Christmas by Candlelight, Kansas Wesleyan’s annual gift to the community, will be at 6:00 pm this Sunday, December 7 in Sams Chapel on the KWU campus.

The concert includes the community, as well as being a gift, with choirs from Sacred Heart Junior/Senior High School, Salina Central High School, Salina South High School, and Southeast of Saline performing, along with the KWU Philharmonic Choir, Wesleyan Chorale and KWU Orchestra.

Selections range from familiar folk carols to sacred hymns in Latin. 

One, “O Nata Lux,” is a Latin text from a 10th-century hymn that translates as “O light born of light.” As usual, the audience will be encouraged to sing along with some of the carols.

The concert will conclude with a performance by the combined choirs and the orchestra.

Admission to Christmas by Candlelight is free and tickets are not required.

In a world where the hustle and bustle often overshadow gentle acts of kindness, Isaiah Kevin Maxi stood out. Born on August 16, 1994, in Kansas City, Missouri, Isaiah’s earthly journey ended at the age of 30 on July 10, 2025, but his legacy continues to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.

During the holiday season, when families gather around the warmth of love and laughter, we reflect on the indelible mark Isaiah left on his loved ones and his community. From a young age, Isaiah faced challenges, particularly with the loss of his mother, Kim Alexander-Maxi, when he was just six years old. Yet, amidst personal tragedy, he transformed his grief into a powerful drive for service and leadership, becoming a beacon of hope and positivity for others.

A proud graduate of Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in 2017, Isaiah earned degrees in Sociology and Organizational Leadership while actively participating in student activities, athletics, and working at the Tiger Tots Preschool Center, where he was affectionately known as “Mr. Maxi.” His infectious energy lit up the room, encouraging children to embrace learning and teamwork.

Friends and family describe Isaiah as warm-hearted and approachable, someone who made everyone feel valued. He was not just a talented athlete on the football field, earning accolades as a leader of the Fort Hays State Tigers, but also a compassionate volunteer dedicated to uplifting others. Seth Kastle, professor of leadership, once said, “He was the epitome of what we educate our students to be – dedicated to serving others and helping those in need.”

After graduation, Isaiah continued his mission of service through AmeriCorps, striving to create positive change in the lives of those around him. He embraced every challenge as an opportunity, believing that “everything happens for a reason,” and ensuring his legacy was one of compassion, leadership, and community building.

His sudden passing left a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him. To honor his memory and the values he embodied, the FHSU Leadership Program has renamed its student service award to the “Isaiah Maxi Outstanding Leadership and Service Award.” This accolade will celebrate and recognize students who exemplify the same spirit of dedication and service that Isaiah so passionately embraced.

“Life isn’t just about football,” he would often say. “When I leave here, I want people to say, ‘Maxi was a good dude.’” Indeed, Isaiah was much more than a good dude; he was a phenomenal human being whose legacy will inspire generations to come.

This December, as we gather with those who matter most, we remember Isaiah’s unwavering commitment to lifting others up and the lasting impact of his generous spirit. His legacy lives on through the stories, kindness, and encouragement he shared, inspiring us to embody the&nbsp;gratitude, courage, and compassion he represented so well. Recent obituaries and service times, how to submit an obituary

Kansas US Senators, Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran, along with Congressman Tracey Mann, have reportedly urged President Trump to approve the state’s request for a major disaster declaration.

According to Senator Marshall's office, this comes after north central Kansas has been hit with&nbsp;several days of severe weather that caused significant damage across rural communities.

"This federal support is critical in ensuring communities have the resources needed to repair and rebuild essential public infrastructure," said the Office of Senator Marshall.

The Kansas members of Congress wrote:

“From September 8 to 10, a slow-moving storm system produced exceptionally heavy rainfall across north-central Kansas, resulting in widespread flash flooding, overland flow, and severe damage to public infrastructure. Rainfall totals in the affected counties ranged from 8.9 inches to more than 14 inches in less than 48 hours, overwhelming drainage systems, saturating soils, and sending fast-moving floodwaters through road networks, agricultural land, and populated areas.

“This damage has placed significant financial strain on Kansans and local governments as they work to recover. Damage assessments conducted jointly by the state and FEMA have determined that Kansas is eligible for approximately $3.5 million in federal assistance.”

"We strongly support the Governor’s request and urge your Administration to provide swift federal assistance to the state of Kansas. This support is essential to ensure Kansans have the resources needed to respond to and recover from the extensive damage caused by these storms."

If this declaration were to be approved, the following counties would be eligible for federal assistance:&nbsp;

Lincoln, Ottawa, Ellsworth and Saline

Upon approval, local governments and public utility providers would be eligible to submit storm-related expenses to FEMA for reimbursement.

<a href="https://www.weather.gov/ict/event_20250908#:~:text=0600%20AM%20Rain%207%20WNW,14%20Inch%20McPherson%20KS%20Cocorahs">According to the US National Weather Service</a>, throughout the month of September, Saline County received rainfalls totalling anywhere between&nbsp;3.05 to over 10 inches of rain.&nbsp;

Many locations picked-up between 4 and 7 inches of rainfall generally west of Salina on September 8th. This caused flash flooding across parts of eastern Lincoln and far western Ottawa County.&nbsp;

Major flooding occurred on the Salt Creek at Barnard (Lincoln County), with&nbsp;it reaching&nbsp;a record level of 25.57 feet. Significant flooding also took plan on the Saline River, especially at Tescott, which reached moderate flood levels.

ABILENE - This year, a total of 15 homes in Abilene are competing for top honors in one of the community's most festive seasonal traditions.

The 2025 "Cowtown Christmas Light Showdown" takes place this Saturday, December 6 and people are invited to cruise through Abilene, enjoy displays and VOTE for their favorite decorated home.&nbsp;

A full map of participating locations is available at&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.abilenekansas.org/ChristmasLights">www.AbileneKansas.org/ChristmasLights</a>.

Voting will take place alongside the Christmas Cruise for Food.

Participants may drop off a non-perishable food item or monetary donation between 4:30 and 6:30 pm&nbsp;at the Abilene Food Bank, 409 NW 3rd Street, next to the Sunflower Hotel.

Volunteers will assist along a designated drop-off lane.

After donating, guests will receive a map and ballot. 

Completed ballots must be returned by 7:30 pm&nbsp;outside Amanda’s Bakery &amp; Bistro, 302 N. Broadway Avenue. Winners will be announced at 8 pm at Little Ike Park.

The Kansas Department of Commerce (KDOC) has awarded $100,000 in grant funding for the support of 20 new tourism marketing projects across the state.

Digital Passport Program: Kansas I-70 Association is developing an interactive digital passport program tied to both World Cup travel and the America 250 celebration, giving visitors new ways to experience attractions along the corridor.

FIFA World Cup Campaign: Wabaunsee County Economic Development is launching a targeted marketing campaign aimed at FIFA World Cup travelers, highlighting the Flint Hills and nearby attractions to an international audience.

Tour die-Kapellen: Hays Area Bicyclists Inc. is preparing a campaign to boost out-of-state participation in the annual Tour die-Kapellen bike and bus tour, spotlighting the region’s striking limestone churches.

Trek Passport App: Nemaha, Jackson, Doniphan and Brown are partnering to create a new Trek Northeast Kansaspassport app, offering themed tours that encourage deeper regional exploration.

According to the KDOC, these projects will help communities elevate their advertising efforts and inspire new visitors to explore Kansas.

“Tourism is a powerful driver of economic growth — and these grants help communities market attractions that tell unique stories in ways that bring more visitors and create new opportunities,” Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “Last year, tourism contributed $8.2 billion in visitor spending to the state’s economy — and we’re committed to supporting our local partners who are working to strengthen communities by expanding Kansas’ visibility.”

KDOC stated the 20 grant recipients will invest more than $177,000 in matching funds towards approved marketing projects.

I-70 member communities include Goodland, Colby, Oakley, WaKeeney, Hays, Russell, Salina, Abilene, Junction City, Manhattan, Topeka, Lecompton, Lawrence, Leavenworth, Bonner Springs, Shawnee and Kansas City.&nbsp;

The association’s purpose is to achieve an increase in economic benefit to communities located along I-70 from travelers on I-70. The association will accomplish this by attracting additional travelers and by encouraging travelers to visit more communities and their attractions along I-70 in Kansas.

Visit Abilene President accepts $100,000 state grant among many others for support of new tourism marketing projects

DICKINSON COUNTY - An Abilene man was arrested, after allegedly stealing a Nebraska vehicle.

According to the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday, December 2 at around 12:30 pm, a Dickinson Co. deputy located and recovered a Toyota Avalon that had been reported stolen out of Nebraska.

The vehicle was reportedly unoccupied at the time it was recovered and was towed for safekeeping purposes, until it can be returned to the owner.

Furthermore, investigators with the Sheriff's Office connected a possible suspect on the following day.

The investigation led to the arrest of Christopher Bryant (19) of Abilene.

Bryant was booked into the Dickinson County Jail on a requested charge of Theft of a Vehicle.

Amanda Otto has had great mentors in her life before she became the CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina (BBBS). 

She grew up in Salina and before her employment at BBBS, she worked in the private sector/entrepreneurial world with her father. After her time working at her family’s business, she decided to apply for the CEO position for BBBS. 

Ever since she came on board, she stated it has been one of the most “rewarding parts of her life.”

“I knew what Big Brothers Big Sisters was and what the mission was. I have had mentors in my life and I understood the importance of mentorship, which has impacted me and I have seen the impact it's had on others,” she said. “Getting into the role was just one of the most rewarding things that I have done thus far. What really impacted me, was to see the program impact, meeting the families, see the kids wanting a big, see the matches and hear their stories. Still to this day, that is what drives me.”

Otto does not anyone to “complicate” the meaning of mentorship. 

She stated that mentorship is about “consistency” and just simply being there for the child.

Growth of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina

“I never in a million years would have believed that I would be able to do something that I love so much for a job, which also benefits our community. I think I have one of the best jobs in Salina,” said Otto.

Before COVID-19, BBBS was serving over 300 hundred children with a staff of 3, plus Otto. Once the pandemic occurred, the organization was forced to take a step back and re-evaluate the actions that needed to take place.

The BBBS mission is “in-person mentoring” and the pandemic put a hold on their service. 

Otto said BBBS of America allowed electronic communication for the other local chapters to do across the country. 

With this option, bigs and littles were able to stay connected virtually, despite the lockdown. On top of that, BBBS of Salina applied and used grant funding to provide services for the families who may not have the resources and tools to connect virtually.

She stated their numbers of the big to little ratio and events is getting back to what it was pre-COVID.

Moreover, programs have grown and been added since then. 

Those programs include, “Beyond School Walls” and day mentoring to name a few. On top of the growth and addition of the programs, BBBS has also collaborated with a numerous amount of local nonprofits as well.

Now, BBBS has 10 people on staff, including Otto. 

She said the staff loves what they do and are passionate in providing the services for the community.

“Our staff loves what they do. You don’t work at Big Brother Big Sisters if you don’t love what you do, and those are the people we recruit to be on our staff,” said Otto.

BBBS of Salina is currently looking to expand by acquiring a bigger building.

“I want to leave my community better than when I found it to be,” Otto said.

“We would not be here without the support of the people and the businesses here,” said Otto.

BBBS of Salina has received outstanding support ranging from monetary and in-kind donations, to volunteerism, board members and local participation in games and events. 

As the organization grows as a whole, the need for support will grow as well.

Otto said they are in consistent communication with their supporters to fill the need of support.

“No gift is too small and even time is essential for us,” said Otto.

Otto had her mentor figures in her life, as she thanked her father, grandfather and people from her workplace who have taught her many valuable life lessons. 

With this, she was able to understand that she cannot do anything worthwhile alone.

“You don’t get to where you are, or where you end up alone,” she said.

Otto’s desire and passion stems from the teachings and precepts her mentors gave her. She stated about being purposeful in every decision and personal interaction on a daily basis, which was a lesson she took from her mentors.

Previous littles are now giving back to society by serving as a Big in the BBBS initiative, due to how the mentorship programs changed their lives for the better.

“That is happening and it is alive and well in Salina, as well as our country through Big Brothers Big Sisters in the mentorship programs. The more kids we can impact, the more we are going to start seeing that multiply tenfold.”

Otto hopes to get rid of the stigma for people to stop thinking they are “not doing enough, or not doing anything in making a difference.” 

She said this stems from over-complicating the process in the growth of a child, since we put our focus on the big things, rather than the small moments that create the bigger impact.

“When we look at the kids that are being mentored, they may not notice or realize the impact that was happening in their lives, until years down the road. These kids are going to pick a path, whether it be positive or negative. As these kids get older, they are going to realize that their mentor was one of the biggest reasons they stayed in school, did not choose that risky behavior, did not choose the path of violence and able to break generational poverty, because the mentor taught them they are worthy enough to contribute, get an education and to have a very successful career. Our kids today have the potential to do all of that. It's in every one of us. We sometimes just need that person to walk alongside us, believe in us and let us know we can do whatever we set our minds to doing, and that is what a mentorship is all about.”

Furthermore, she said it's her hope that once the littles realize the impact they received, to give back and change the lives of others in their respective communities.

She also stated she has seen how resilient the kids are in this generation, and adding that little extra push from their mentor is biggest difference maker.

“Our future generation is going to bring so much good to this world. The resiliency is in them, but what does that resiliency look like when they have someone cheering them on?"

There have been many cases and stories in the past where children's lives have been saved from suicidal ideations, after being a little through the BBBS programs.&nbsp;

Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum

LINDSBORG - The Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum invites the community to gather and celebrate a beloved local tradition as Christmas music performances return inside the Swedish Pavilion this year.

Heritage Christmas will be held this year on Saturday, December 13, from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. at 120 E. Mill St. in Lindsborg.

Visitors will stroll along lamplit paths and step into a festive mix of music, crafts, storytelling, and hands-on holiday fun. Families can decorate cookies, create kid-friendly crafts, enjoy a dramatic performance, tour the historic 1898 Smoky Valley Roller Mills, and share a wish with Santa Claus.

Executive Director Aubrey Wheeler says the event continues to charm her year after year. 

“Heritage Christmas brings together so many of the traditions our community treasures,” she said. “It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the season with our museum family.”

Admission is by donation, with a suggested contribution of $10 for adults and $5 for students.

This year’s musical performances return to a cherished building - recently rescued from structural collapse thanks to many generous donors. The 1904 World’s Fair Swedish Pavilion reopened to the public last summer after essential repairs, making it again the central attraction of the annual holiday tradition at the museum. Known for its warm acoustics and deep cultural significance, the Pavilion will once again host performances by Men in Harmony, the Mennonite Chorus, and the Smoky Valley Men’s Choir throughout the evening.

Elsewhere on Heritage Square, the holiday festivities continue. Children can make seasonal crafts in the historic West Kentuck one-room schoolhouse and decorate cookies from the local Smoky Valley Bakery at the original Lindsborg train depot. The stables will once again host an intimate performance of A Shepherd’s Story of Christmas, and visitors are invited to spend some time connecting with city officials during the third year of the Mayor’s Christmas Kaffe in Sweadal, Lindsborg’s original county courthouse.

Across the street inside the main museum building, guests will find an opportunity to visit with Santa Claus as well as a new surprise - for the first time, JJ Knitpicker will set up a cozy knitting vendor booth in the main gallery.

A rare opportunity to take a tour from experienced guides of the fully restored 1898 Smoky Valley Roller Mills will also be available throughout the event.

The museum’s gift shop will remain open throughout the event for holiday shoppers. Here visitors can take care of their Christmas card needs; purchasing ones that feature original commissioned art of museum attractions. Other unique offerings include books, toys, Swedish-themed souvenirs, unused historic flour bags, and handcrafted items such as wood-turned pens, letter openers, and wine corks made from actual repurposed mill timbers from the Old Mill.
