MANHATTAN, Kan. –&nbsp;It is time to resume lawn maintenance as spring weather arrives and grass begins to grow more quickly.

Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says proper maintenance is a proactive approach to reduce weed growth and other stresses to the lawn while minimizing costs and the environmental impact.

The optimal mowing height for a home lawn depends on the type of grass, lawn use and time of year, Domenghini said.

“Mow at the high end of the recommended range for each species to improve drought resistance by encouraging deeper roots,” Domenghini said. “Only one-third of the grass leaf should be cut at a time.”

Removing more by lowering the mowing height results in physiological stress and possible heat or cold injury. If the lawn has become overgrown and needs more than one-third removed it will need to be done gradually with a few days between each mowing.

“Mowing frequency should be based on the growth rate of the lawn,” Domenghini said. She suggests not following a set schedule that may result in excessive clippings left on the grass.

“Proper timing of mowing means the grass clippings are shorter and can be returned to the&nbsp;lawn,” Domenghini said. “This contributes nitrogen back to the lawn.”

Long clippings can block sunlight to the live turf and promote disease, so they should be bagged and removed.

Maintaining a sharp blade on the mower is essential for a clean cut, Domenghini added. She said a dull mower blade tears the grass and causes the tips to turn whitish.

“Mow using a different pattern each time to prevent soil compaction and turf wear from the mower wheels. The grass blades lean the direction of the mower’s path so changing the pattern each time allows the grass to stand more upright,” Domenghini said.

Trees can be severely damaged if bumped by the mower, she warned. Even what appears to be a minor wound can result in death for the tree, so she recommends cultivating the soil surrounding trees to prevent grass and weeds from growing up close to the trunk.

Apply water in the early morning, and wait as long as possible between watering, Domenghini said. Nighttime watering promotes disease development.

“Some signs indicating that the turf needs water include darker bluish-green color, and when footprints remain in the lawn when someone walks across rather than leaf blades bouncing back in place,” Domenghini said. “Soak the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches and wait for signs that more water is needed.”

Fertilize only to maintain a moderately green color during favorable weather and minimally or not at all during times of weather stress, Domenghini said.

Over-fertilizing increases the water and mowing requirements. Domenghini suggests not fertilizing when heavy rain is expected, and never dump excess fertilizer into storm drains or sewers.

The Salina Crossroads Marathon has earned the title of Best Boston Marathon Qualifier in Kansas for 2025, a major recognition from <a href="http://FindMyMarathon.com">FindMyMarathon.com</a>, one of the nation’s leading race websites.

The honor is awarded based on the number and percentage of runners who achieve Boston qualifying times at USATF-certified events. For many runners, earning a spot in the prestigious Boston Marathon represents the pinnacle of long-distance running achievements.

In addition to the national recognition, the Salina Crossroads Marathon was featured for the second time in Kansas! Magazine’s 2025 Volume 81, Issue 1. The article spotlighted the marathon’s rapid growth, its community impact, and its selection as the 2024 USA Meet-Up site for Team Take Down, an African American running club.

“The Salina Crossroads Marathon race course highlights our charming downtown, scenic parks, historic neighborhoods, and beautiful running paths. Combine that with amazing race communication, a fun race expo, and great food and fun entertainment at the post-race celebration and it is no surprise that the Salina Crossroads has quickly become one of the premier races in Kansas” said Co-Race Director Daniel Craig. “We appreciate the amazing support from the City of Salina, Visit Salina, Salina Downtown, Inc., and the more than 50 organizations that sponsor and support the race as well as over 200 volunteers who help out each year at the event.”

Visit Salina estimates that the 2024 Salina Crossroads Marathon generated $1,019,080 in economic impact for the Salina Community. Salina Crossroads is also a "Gold Standard" race and provides 100% of the race entry fees back to Saline County Youth Sports. Salina Crossroads Marathon provides 100% of the race entry fees to five local youth sports organizations: Salina Burn Track and Field Club, Salina Family YMCA, Kansas Youth Sports, Salina Area Youth Sportsmanship Initiative, and the School Marathon Foundation.

The Salina Crossroads Marathon has 3003 registered runners from all 50 states registered for the 2025 race which puts the event in great position to break last year’s record of 5204 registered runners. The half marathon is the largest event with 1431 registered runners while the full marathon has 903 registered runners. In addition to the marathon, half marathon, team relays, 5K, and kids fun run, this year’s event will also include a new 10K.

 “This event has truly been embraced by the entire community. Salina Crossroads Marathon named 2025 Best Boston Marathon qualifier in Kansas

A Salina man was arrested Thursday evening after allegedly swerving his vehicle at a bicyclist in what police say may have been an intentional act.

According to Salina Police Capt. James Feldman, officers were called to the 900 block of W. South Street just after 5:30 p.m. on April 10. A 39-year-old Salina man reported that while he was riding his bicycle eastbound, a gold Chevy S-10 pickup approached heading westbound. The driver, later identified as 38-year-old Christopher Hess of Salina, allegedly crossed the center line and swerved toward the bicyclist in what the victim believed was an attempt to hit him.

The cyclist swerved off the road and fell into nearby grass. A witness in the area confirmed the victim’s account, Feldman said.

Hess was located a short time later in the 300 block of N. Santa Fe and taken into custody without incident. He was booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of aggravated assault, violation of a protection order, and failure to maintain lane.

Smoky Hill Museum invites Salina to shine for America’s 250th with ‘Two Lights for Tomorrow’

Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas is thrilled to announce the expansion of its outreach services to include the Solomon community. This move aims to provide essential support to families who may require additional assistance.

"On behalf of Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas, I am excited to announce our expansion into Solomon," said Megan Robl, Executive Director of Catholic Charities. "Our goal is to reach families on the margins throughout Northern Kansas, ensuring that everyone has access to the support they need."

On Wednesday, May 7, Catholic Charities will conduct a trial run, delivering food and hygiene items directly to residents of Solomon. This initiative reflects the organization's ongoing commitment to addressing the needs of individuals and families facing hardship.

"I think it will be wonderful to have Catholic Charities of Northern Kansas provide their outreach services in Solomon," said Daylene Tracy, Parish Life Coordinator at Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish. "It will be great to fill the gap for those who may need some additional help at the beginning of the month. There is a need for it. Catholic Charities is there to help local people. I've seen this firsthand."

Father John Wolesky also emphasized the importance of this expansion, noting that many individuals and families in the community are struggling financially. 

"It will be a great relief to have Catholic Charities here each month, providing support for those who need it most," Wolesky said.

Catholic Charities currently visits 26 rural communities across the Diocese of Salina every month, in addition to serving from its three office locations in Hays, Salina, and Manhattan. Beginning in July, the organization plans to include regular monthly visits to Solomon.

Catholic Charities expands food and hygiene services to Solomon

National Award-winning <a href="http://Salinatheatre.com">Theatre Salina</a> is announcing the titles for its 65th season. The new season will include three shows from the theatre’s past and four new titles. Two of the new musicals have just been made available to community theatres.

The season will open in September with Disney’s FROZEN. This production features music and lyrics from Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez with the book by Jennifer Lee. The story follows Princesses Anna and Elsa in their frozen kingdom of Arendelle. Taken from the Disney movie of the same name, songs include “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” and “Let It Go”.

January’s presentation is the classic drama TWELVE ANGRY MEN by Reginald Rose. This supremely entertaining production will be directed by Salina’s own Tyrees Allen. Coincidentally, Tyrees’ first role after reaching Hollywood was in the remake of this movie including George C. Scott, Jack Lemon, and Ossie Davis. The action takes place in a jury room where a seemingly “open and shut” case gets turned around when one juror isn’t quite sure it should be so easy to send a 19-year-old to his death.

February brings the hilarious comedy SWEET DELILAH SWIM CLUB by Jones Hope Wooten. This comedy follows five female college swimmers as they meet every year in the same beach house. This hit comedy was produced here previously under another title with great success. Follow Lexie, Dinah, Sheree, Vernadette, and Jeri Neal through a lifetime of love and friendship.

The Theatre will again partner with Kansas Wesleyan University in April with the exciting and slapstick THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. This hilarious retelling of the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta was recrafted at the Public Theatre and became a new instant classic. The topsy-turvy world of pirates and maidens will come to life on our stage with vaudeville physicality and humor.

The season closes in June with another new musical, JIMMY BUFFET’S ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE.

Featuring popular Jimmy Buffet classics, including “Cheeseburger in Paradise”, “Margaritaville”, “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere”, and “Volcano”. The show tells the story of a handsome bartender and singer in the Caribbean who falls for a career-minded tourist. Created by Jimmy Buffet, Greg Garcia, and Mike O’Malley, this hilarious and heartwarming musical will have all the Parrot heads singing along.

Salina Tech celebrates National Signing Day with housing awards for incoming students

Kansas State University's Michael Krysko, associate professor of history, has published a new book that explores radio's propensity to traverse political and cultural borders.

"Contested Airwaves: American Radio at Home and Abroad, 1914-1946," published by the University of Illinois Press, spans a tumultuous period encompassing two world wars and investigates the often-hostile reactions provoked by border-crossing broadcasts considered to be foreign, unwelcome and even threatening to many outraged and protesting listeners.

In trying to make sense of varied listener and policymaker reactions, "Contested Airwaves" considers how radio engaged the knowledge, assumptions and prejudices that fueled such animosities.

As American radio broadcasting became increasingly tethered to commercial entertainment programming, widespread opposition to non-English language broadcasting grew in intensity during the 1930s.

"Even Groucho Marx weighed in with his complaints," Krysko noted about the increasingly widespread concerns about foreign language broadcasting before the U.S. entered World War II.

According to Krysko, efforts to use broadcasting to teach languages across borders floundered in the face of the misunderstandings and prejudices that infused the radio educators' approaches. Fierce diplomatic controversies about national rights to radio frequencies and cross-border interference pit nations against each other in futile battles.

"I particularly enjoyed writing about listeners who were utterly so furious about what they heard on the radio that they took time to write some angry missive and mail it to whomever they held responsible for supposedly un-American broadcasts," Krysko said. "The emotion and hyperbole often infused into these letters often offered insight into more pervasive ideas about race, ethnicity and nationalism that ran through American society in the first half of the twentieth century."

John Brinkley, a pioneering broadcaster and nearly successful Kansas gubernatorial candidate, figures prominently in the study. He was the spark for a decade-long U.S.-Mexico radio dispute that spanned the 1930s. It erupted when he began broadcasting from south of the U.S.-Mexican border deliberately intending to interfere with some of the most popular American radio stations.

"The road to completion for this book was a really long one and I’m both delighted and relieved it’s finally finished. I first researched John Brinkley in the late 1990s, never imagining that I might someday wind up at Kansas State University just a few miles away from John Brinkley’s old stomping grounds in Milford," Krysko said.

A member of the Department of History since 2006, Krysko teaches and writes on the history of technology and U.S. foreign relations. "Contested Airwaves" is his second book and is part of the University of Illinois' series in the History of Media and Communications.

Two people, including a Salina police officer, were injured in a crash Thursday evening at the intersection of Crawford Street and Lewis Street.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just before 7:30 p.m. when a 2005 Ford Freestar driven by Susan K. Price, 71, of Salina, failed to yield at a stop sign on Lewis Street. Price's vehicle entered Crawford Street and collided with a 2024 Ford Explorer driven by Officer Melissa K. Short-Eshleman, 49, who was traveling eastbound with emergency lights and sirens activated in response to another injury accident.

Salina Police Captain James Feldman said the officer attempted to take evasive action, but a collision still occurred. Both drivers sustained minor injuries and were transported by EMS to Salina Regional Health Center. KHP reported that both individuals were properly restrained at the time of the crash.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the collision. Salina Post will update this article as new information becomes available.&nbsp;

Altrusa Salina is organizing a food drive to support the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank on Saturday, April 12. The drive-through donation event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at First Southern Baptist Church, 2401 S. Ohio.

The food drive aims to reduce local families' food insecurity by collecting non-perishable food items and monetary donations. Community members are encouraged to drop off donations during the event or contribute in advance by contacting the food bank at foodbankstaff@salinafood.org.

16 months from now Kansans will vote on a state constitutional amendment that will, if passed, institute popular elections for state supreme court justices. This possibility disturbs many Kansans, and it’s worth trying to understand why.

Today, Kansas has a mostly merit-based system for choosing supreme court justices; while the governor makes the appointment, they are required to choose from list of candidates prepared by a non-partisan committee of lawyers. It’s a fairly unique process, though some other states also take a similarly mixed approach to the filling of state judicial positions.

The idea of shifting to straightforward competitive elections for choosing justices is hardly unknown, however; 21 states have that system (which was also the selection process for judges that Thomas Jefferson preferred, for whatever that’s worth). So what is the fear?

Most say they’re concerned that judicial elections would result in huge amounts of money flowing into Kansas to influence voters one way or another, as was the case recently in Wisconsin, where over $100 million was spent in the last Supreme Court election. The focus here is on the profound inequality and potential corruption which comes along with such expensive political races. These elements of contemporary politics are especially inappropriate for the judicial system, or so the argument goes, since it needs to stand as a neutral, non-partisan arbiter of constitutional disputes.

The first part of that fear of indisputably true; while direct connections between large campaign donations and quid-pro-quo-type corruption are rare, the reality of money’s indirect influence on the choices which elected leaders make is all but impossible to deny. But that said, I don’t know if the second part of that concern matters as much as some believe.

Basically, I’m dubious that the judicial branches of our state governments (much like the federal judiciary) have ever been or could ever be the entirely “neutral, non-partisan arbiters” of the law that many want to believe them to be. It’s not as though Governor Kelly, when there was a vacancy of the Kansas Supreme Court, didn’t carefully investigate the suggested nominees, so as to avoid choosing someone ideologically committed to an agenda she opposed.

Which I think points to the real problem with adopting judicial elections in our current environment of essentially unregulated campaign money. Put frankly: who are the sorts of people who are going to want to serve in the highest levels of our state’s judicial system if doing so will require extensive commitments to raising money and campaigning? Obviously, it’s more likely to appeal to those who, like most politicians generally, desire to promote specific political and legal agendas. So the result of electing justices may not be a corrupting of the judiciary, but rather simply making more obvious the political biases that everyone involved already possesses.

Maintaining a constitutional place for unelected judges in a democratic republic is no easy feat. There needs to be a role for public input; leaving justices entirely unaccountable to those whom their decisions affect is, I think, a sure recipe for discontent. But on the other hand, inviting people entirely committed to their political agendas to put themselves forward as the judicial candidates we choose from could undermine the dispositions upon which the courts’ legitimacy depends. In Kansas, state judges are already subject to retention votes, though they are almost never removed for that reason. Perhaps taking more seriously that aspect of the judicial selection process—by, for example, imposing term limits—could make for a more balanced reform of the system, rather than replacing it entirely?

INSIGHT: What’s the real problem with electing justices?

Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank is looking ahead to the STAMP OUT HUNGER Food Drive, a city-wide collection of non-perishable food held in partnership with the National Association of Letter Carriers. This year’s collection will be Saturday, May 10 and volunteers of all ages are encouraged to help.

“In these challenging times, the STAMP OUT HUNGER Food Drive is a real blessing to our pantry,” said Executive Director, Karen Couch. “This food drive has collected around 20,000 lbs of food each year for us – and that takes over 200+ volunteers to pick-up, sort and process the donations on Saturday so that our pantry can return to normal operation the following Monday. It takes a tremendous amount of hard work to make this event happen, but so very rewarding to see the generosity of the community in action.”

Blue grocery bags with information about STAMP OUT HUNGER will make their way to nearly every mailbox in Salina in the week leading to the event. Food Bank and Post Office staff will be kicking off the event on Friday, May 9th with breakfast goodies and lunch at the Salina Post Office from 8am – 1:30pm. Everyone is welcome to drop by and pick up an extra blue bag or drop off their donations early.

Residents are encouraged to fill their blue bag with non-perishable food items – preferably new items. On Saturday May 10th, residents should place their filled bag by their mailbox. Volunteers from the Food Bank will start driving around collecting donations starting at 9am. Other volunteers will be stationed at the Post Office to off-load donations, weigh the product and sort it for transportation to the Food Bank. Then at the Food Bank, a team of staff and volunteers will work all day processing the donations.

“Everyone can take part in this …. from donating to volunteering,” said Karen Couch.

The Salina Senior Theatre Project (SSTP) will begin their 5th Anniversary Tour this week and will continue periodically through May. Founder and Director Bob Sears says the tour will consist of theatrical performances, singing and skits that will entertain seniors in the community.

SSTP was founded in 2021 since then they have presented 7 shows, have had over 70 seniors participate both on and off stage with the oldest cast member be 91 yrs old.Sears stated the mission of SSTP is&nbsp;&nbsp;"EMPOWERING SENIORS THROUGH THE MAGIC OF THEATRE"&nbsp; Tour performances will include&nbsp; “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Baby,” “Is it Me?” “You Know You Are Old When…” and much more.

Senior Theatre Project announces 5th anniversary tour

Salina Public Schools has announced that Cody Stockwell will serve as the next principal of Cottonwood Elementary School, effective July 1, 2025.

Stockwell brings 12 years of experience in education to the position and currently serves as the lead teacher at Cottonwood Elementary. His background includes roles as an adaptive special education teacher, mentor teacher, and head/assistant cross country coach.

He holds a bachelor's degree in physical education, a master's degree in special education from Emporia State University, and a master's degree in educational leadership from Kansas State University.

Stockwell will succeed Kyle Griffitts, who will retire at the end of the current school year.

Cody Stockwell selected as next Cottonwood Elementary principal

Two high school seniors from North Central Kansas have been named winners of the 2024-2025 Rural Voices Youth Contest, which has been sponsored by the North Central Regional Planning Commission (NCRPC) of Beloit since 2006.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Alliana Thomasson, a senior at Ellsworth Junior/Senior High School, and Nicholas Niewald, a senior at St. John's Catholic High School, submitted the winning entries for this year’s contest. Each recipient will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the honorary John R. Cyr Rural Voices Award, named after Cyr, who served as the NCRPC Executive Director for 22 years.

The NCRPC invited high school seniors from the 12 counties in its service area to submit an original essay or video expressing their perspectives on the contest theme for 2024-2025, “Rural Kansas…My Hometown.” The eligible counties included Clay, Cloud, Dickinson, Ellsworth, Jewell, Lincoln, Marshall, Mitchell, Ottawa, Republic, Saline, and Washington. Since the contest began, more than $33,000 has been awarded to high school seniors from the region.

“This contest provides an annual opportunity for us to hear perspectives from the youth in our region.
