Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum

LINDSBORG - The Lindsborg Old Mill &amp; Swedish Heritage Museum invites the community to gather and celebrate a beloved local tradition as Christmas music performances return inside the Swedish Pavilion this year.

Heritage Christmas will be held this year on Saturday, December 13, from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. at 120 E. Mill St. in Lindsborg.

Visitors will stroll along lamplit paths and step into a festive mix of music, crafts, storytelling, and hands-on holiday fun. Families can decorate cookies, create kid-friendly crafts, enjoy a dramatic performance, tour the historic 1898 Smoky Valley Roller Mills, and share a wish with Santa Claus.

Executive Director Aubrey Wheeler says the event continues to charm her year after year. 

“Heritage Christmas brings together so many of the traditions our community treasures,” she said. “It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the season with our museum family.”

Admission is by donation, with a suggested contribution of $10 for adults and $5 for students.

This year’s musical performances return to a cherished building - recently rescued from structural collapse thanks to many generous donors. The 1904 World’s Fair Swedish Pavilion reopened to the public last summer after essential repairs, making it again the central attraction of the annual holiday tradition at the museum. Known for its warm acoustics and deep cultural significance, the Pavilion will once again host performances by Men in Harmony, the Mennonite Chorus, and the Smoky Valley Men’s Choir throughout the evening.

Elsewhere on Heritage Square, the holiday festivities continue. Children can make seasonal crafts in the historic West Kentuck one-room schoolhouse and decorate cookies from the local Smoky Valley Bakery at the original Lindsborg train depot. The stables will once again host an intimate performance of A Shepherd’s Story of Christmas, and visitors are invited to spend some time connecting with city officials during the third year of the Mayor’s Christmas Kaffe in Sweadal, Lindsborg’s original county courthouse.

Across the street inside the main museum building, guests will find an opportunity to visit with Santa Claus as well as a new surprise - for the first time, JJ Knitpicker will set up a cozy knitting vendor booth in the main gallery.

A rare opportunity to take a tour from experienced guides of the fully restored 1898 Smoky Valley Roller Mills will also be available throughout the event.

The museum’s gift shop will remain open throughout the event for holiday shoppers. Here visitors can take care of their Christmas card needs; purchasing ones that feature original commissioned art of museum attractions. Other unique offerings include books, toys, Swedish-themed souvenirs, unused historic flour bags, and handcrafted items such as wood-turned pens, letter openers, and wine corks made from actual repurposed mill timbers from the Old Mill.

Lindsborg museum to host Heritage Christmas for evening of old-fashioned cheer

Kansas Insurance Commissioner, Vicki Schmidt has announced state efforts have prevented over $4.97 million from going to bad actors (scammers) through the Protect Vulnerable Adults from Financial Exploitation Act.

“Identification and prevention of financial exploitation in vulnerable populations is a priority for our Department,” said Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. “This law has given financial advisors, DCF and the Department of Insurance more tools to help prevent fraud and to go after bad actors.”

Kansas legislation effective July 1, 2024, requires broker-dealers and investment advisers to report certain instances of financial exploitation, including potential exploitation. The Kansas Department of Insurance (KDOI) works with the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF), Adult Protective Services (APS) on cases reported through this act. 

The law allows broker-dealers and investment advisers to delay transactions that are suspected financial exploitation so KDOI and APS can investigate.

“When an adult experiences financial exploitation, the impact reaches far beyond lost assets.&nbsp;It can erode the core foundations of life—autonomy, trust, and self-confidence,” said DCF Secretary Laura Howard. “We are committed to partnering with state and local agencies to protect vulnerable adults and connect them to resources for lasting recovery.”

For fiscal year 2025, $10.5 million was reported lost by fraud and financial exploitation before KDOI and DCF were involved. 

Due to the protections provided by the Act, industry professionals, KDOI, and APS prevented $4.97 million from going to bad actors. 

Through the Act, 140 reports have been received. Of the 140 cases, 63 victims were female and 54 were male. The average age of reported victims was 73.

Keep the holiday season cheerful by protecting pets from potential hazards. 

Susan Nelson, clinical professor and veterinarian at the Kansas State University&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksvhc.org/services/pet-health-center/">Hill's Pet Health and Nutrition Center</a>, cautions pet owners about the unexpected dangers that celebrations of the season can present to curious animals.

"Homes are often decked for the holidays, and many decorations and wrapping items have the potential to cause harm if ingested, bitten or knocked over," Nelson said. "These include items such as ribbons, tinsel, hooks, electrical cords, candles, oil lamps, potpourri, ornaments and wreaths."

If pets ingest holiday plants, it can cause anything from minor gastrointestinal irritation to life-threatening toxicity. Nelson says to keep mistletoe, holly, amaryllis, balsam, pine and cedar out of reach. 

Certain water additives for Christmas trees can also be toxic to pets. 

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals provides a&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/aspca-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants">list of plants toxic</a>&nbsp;to dogs and cats on its website.

Holiday festivities might be fun for people, but Nelson said they can be stressful for pets. Strangers and crowds can make animals anxious, so Nelson advises keeping them in a comfortable, quiet place away from the commotion with a favorite toy or treat. Even if pets enjoy company, they should still have access to a room or crate in a calm area where guests won't disturb them.

For pets that are stressed by visitors, Nelson recommends consulting with a veterinarian about prescribing anxiolytics to help decrease the pet's anxiety until the visitors are gone.

"It's important to make sure pets have identification, like a collar with tags or a microchip," Nelson added. "That way, if they slip through the door and run away as guests enter or leave, the pet can be returned. It's critical for tags and microchips to have the most up-to-date contact information to help with reunification."

Many animal-related emergency visits during the holidays are due to pets eating something inappropriate, whether intentionally given to them or accidentally ingested.

"Fatty foods can lead to life-threatening pancreatitis," Nelson said. "This includes things like ham, gravy, fat trimmings from meat, turkey skin and dark meat, butter-laden potatoes, and other buttered vegetables."

Meat bones can cause life-threatening perforations of the gastrointestinal tract, especially poultry bones, which tend to splinter when chewed. Several small pieces can also lead to obstructions or tooth breakage.

Nelson encourages pet owners to exercise caution with foods and beverages that can be harmful to animals. Items to avoid that can pose serious health risks include chocolate, coffee and other caffeinated drinks, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, raw yeast dough, salty snacks, foods seasoned with garlic or onion powder, citrus stems, leaves, peels, fruits and seeds, dairy products, desserts or candies sweetened with xylitol, and alcoholic beverages.

"Securing all food items behind a pet-proof door and making sure trash cans are properly closed can help keep pets safe," Nelson said. "Strings, foil wrappers, stainless steel scrub pads, skewers and other items smell like the food they were used on and can be tempting for pets to ingest. These can lead to gastrointestinal obstruction or perforation."

The event is set to be held Sunday, May 31 - Saturday, June 6&nbsp;at Kansas State University in Manhattan. This will be the program’s 34th consecutive session at KSU and 88th overall.

Traditionally, Kansas&nbsp;Boys State&nbsp;has been for individuals who will complete their junior year of high school in the spring just prior to the start of each session. However, the ALBSK program will again expand the pool of applicants for this year’s session to also include those who will complete their sophomore year of high school this spring.

The American Legion&nbsp;Boys State&nbsp;of Kansas program provides a relevant, interactive, problem-solving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community,&nbsp;state&nbsp;and nation.&nbsp;

Boys State&nbsp;is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the&nbsp;state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government, and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

The cost to attend the&nbsp;Boys State&nbsp;of Kansas&nbsp;program is $375. However, in many instances, sponsors pay the majority of the fees, with the delegate or his family paying $50.

Those wishing to attend the 2026 session should visit&nbsp;<a href="https://ksbstate.org/" target="_blank">ksbstate.org</a>&nbsp;to apply.

The deadline to apply for the 2026 program is Thursday, April 30 but&nbsp;applications are accepted after that date, but on a space-available basis.

Furthermore, delegates who are returning for a second year have the opportunity to attend the 2026 session for just $50 total, provided they get at least three people from their school (or another school) to attend.

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) has released its 2025 Thanksgiving Weekend Holiday Activity Report. 

The reporting period for the holiday ran from 6:00 pm on Wednesday, November 26 through 11:59 pm on Sunday, November 30.

KHP worked one fatal non-DUI related crash, involving one non-DUI related fatality over the holiday reporting period. 

The fatal crash occurred in Finney County.

KHP releases 2025 Thanksgiving activity report: one fatality crash reported

For those who may struggle emotionally during the holidays, Christ Cathedral offers a Blue Christmas service on Sunday, December 7 at 5:00 pm, at the church, located at 138 S. Eighth Street in downtown Salina.

“We enter into the holiday season with expectations set by our cultural messaging- whether it be heartwarming advertisements, classic holiday movies or even our own memories,” says The Very Rev Shay Craig, Cathedral Dean. “But every year can’t live up to those expectations, and that disappointment can color our experience of the whole holiday season.”

Craig says when people don’t feel as happy as they think they should be during the holidays, they may blame themselves or assume they are doing something wrong. “Gathering for a service like this one and seeing how many types of people may suffer in this way, reminds us that this feeling is more common that we realize.

“By returning our focus to the ways God is working in our lives and the blessings that are present, we help ourselves and one another return to a happier narrative for the season,” Craig adds.

The Blue Christmas worship service is more contemplative in style, featuring music, spoken word and quiet time, with an opportunity to light prayers candles and to reflect.

After a family lost everything due to a house fire in Bennington, the Granny Brigade is calling on the community to help donate and support towards their fund.

The Grizzle family suffered from a house fire back on Wednesday, November 19 in Bennington, KS. At around 9:00 am, the fire occurred and a combination of local agencies extinguished the fire shortly after the report was made, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

The Grizzle family consists of 9 people, with 7 children ages 3-11. One of the children is diagnosed with cerebral palsy and lost their support dog from the fire.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the cause of fire may have been due to an electrical issue. A family member of the Grizzle family stated it was due to "faulty wiring."

According to the Granny Brigade, the family member also stated the smoke detectors were not working either.

Two dogs and two bearded dragons passed away from the fire. Reportedly, nobody from the Grizzle family was injured.

Donate to the Grizzle Family Fire Relief Fund

According to Rosemary Mai from the Granny Brigade, the organization will be collecting monetary donations on Saturday, December 6 from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm at two different locations in Salina:

"To lose everything you own close to Christmas is horrible and we want to help," said Mai.

Requested charges on vehicle thieves are pending, after it was stolen from Salina and recovered in McPherson County

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) at around 6:30 on Monday morning, officers were dispatched to the Hilton Garden Inn (3320 S 9th St) for the report of a stolen vehicle.

Reportedly, the victim of the vehicle left their 2009 Chevy Silverado pickup unattended while warming it up.

Later that same day, the McPherson County Sheriff's Office located and recovered the stolen Silverado. SPD stated there was two adults and a juvenile occupying the vehicle.

No requested charges or identification of the suspects have been made at this time, due to which county they will be arrested in.

SPD would like to remind everyone to warm up your vehicles with a remote-start system and without a key in the ignition.&nbsp;

Additionally, a firearm was located inside the vehicle and SPD would like to remind everyone to not leave a firearm unsecured inside your vehicles.

Firearms are commonly stolen from vehicles during hunting season as well.

Eagle Media is calling all "Eagle Elves" to help our Salina radio stations and nonprofits, stuff the Elf Mobile on Saturday,&nbsp;December 13 and Sunday, December 14 at the&nbsp;Walmart Supercenter on&nbsp;2900 S. 9th St.

Eagle Media will be collecting toys to be delivered to children in the community this Christmas by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina, CAPS, and DVACK.&nbsp;

"This is how we keep kids smiling this Christmas, by showing how kind our community truly is," said Chris Cadle, Program Director for Eagle Media. "As a grown-up who was once a kid in need, I can tell you that you truly can make a difference in a life with a single gift.&nbsp; There were times when I was a kid that presents from organizations were the only gifts we got.&nbsp; I just want to pay it forward and help everyone we can this Christmas!"

You can bring a toy or shop from anywhere and/or you can drop off cash, and the elves on site will shop for you.

On site there will be hot chocolate available from Mahaska, games/prizes from Arby's, a raffle for prizes and much more for both days. The Coke Bear will make an appearance and take pictures with people, alongside Frosty the Snowman and Santa. 

After the two days of stuffing the Elf Mobile with toys are over, Eagle Media will do the "Eagle Elf Run" from Walmart to the radio station (1825 S. Ohio), with the help of escorts from the VFW and Legion Riders, Salina Jeepers Club and anyone else who wants to join in!&nbsp;

The Eagle Elf Run will take place at around 5:00 pm on Sunday the 14th.&nbsp;

On Thursday, December 4&nbsp;Congressional District candidate for the 1st District of Kansas, Lauren Reinhold will be the guest speaker, hosted by Salina Indivisible.

Reinhold will speak at the Friendship Center (746 Commanche Ave) from 6:30 - 7:30 pm on Thursday.&nbsp;Reinhold&nbsp;will be campaigning her candidacy, on top of sharing her views on current Kansas issues.

The event is free and open to the public. A&nbsp;Q&amp;A for those in attendance will occur at the end of the event.

Reinhold has practiced law for 28 years and is a former federal union officer who worked in human resources advocating for employees.

She has stated she decided to run after "witnessing firsthand how Trump, Congress and the Department of Government Efficiency have, in her view, undermined the federal government."
