A Salina man was arrested after threatening to stab a female at a motel.

According to the Salina Police Department on Saturday, May 31st a 41-year old female was staying at the Hastings Inn on 217 S. Broadway. She had a male acquaintance who lived at the motel as well, and walked over to his room as she offered to take his 12-year old son to see a family member.

When the woman arrived to his room, the male reportedly became upset and told her that he was going to stab her several times. After the threat, the woman fled the scene.

Police say, a witness was with the woman when the threat happened and made the report to authorities. Officers then contacted the female victim by phone and she told police that she was afraid of the male suspect's threat.

Officers then arrived to the motel and located the suspect in his room. They arrested 43-year old, Jere Thomas and charged him with criminal threat.

Salina Police are currently searching for two male suspects who assaulted, threatened and abandoned a woman at an alleyway.

According to the Salina Police Department, a 42-year old female had her pain medication stolen by a known male acquaintance on Wednesday, May 14th. She did not report the incident, because the male promised to give it back to her.&nbsp;

At a later date on Friday, May 31st the same male arrived in a vehicle to the woman's unknown location to give back her pain medication. However, the female got into the man's vehicle and another male subject was inside as well.&nbsp;

Reportedly, they drove around Salina for about 15 minutes and finally stopped at an alleyway on the 900 block of Gypsum. Both males then told the woman to get out of the vehicle. 

Police say, she did not get out of the vehicle fast enough and both men forcibly pushed her out, causing minor injuries on the woman. Both suspects then kicked and choked her and said to the woman they were going to "kill her."

Before the male suspects left the scene, they stole the female victim's cell phone and a total of $345 she had. The victim then called police on a nearby public phone and stated to authorities what happened.&nbsp;

The two male suspects are aged 27 and 40 and are both white. Police say the suspects were driving a Tan Hummer.

Red Fern Booksellers in Downtown Salina has announced a slew of events that will be occurring throughout the month of June.

First Friday Live Music Series continues on Friday, June 6th with Symphony Duo, Denise Blehm and Judy Weber. Attendees will have a great chance to listen to music, while purchasing pots and succulents from those who will be selling outside the bookstore. This event will be from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm.

The following week on Monday, June 9th from 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm Amy Cole, author from Salina will be releasing her third book, "Only Ever You." Snacks, refreshments and giveaways will occur throughout the book event.

Ending that week on Friday, June 13th, Red Fern will host a book signing for author, Heather Herman on her book "Lady of the Tiger." This event starts at 5:30 pm, with special guest, Don Wagner playing music. The book signing will then start at 6:00 pm.

That following Thursday on June 19th, a book discussion over, "The Lilac People" by Milo Todd will occur at 6:00 pm. The next day on Friday, June 20th from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, will be a dive into history filled with discussion about the 2010s.

Then the very next day on Saturday, June 21st, Stonewall ambassador, bestselling trans-author and former Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) teacher, Juno Dawson will offer advice on coming out, sex and relationships. This event will be from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm.

To cap off the month for Red Fern on Saturday, June 28th from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm local baker, Rebekah Brandt along with her daughter will be serving macarons.

Kansas Wesleyan has renewed its contract with Eagle Media to serve as the radio home of KWU Athletics. The new agreement begins July 1 and runs through June 2028. KINA 910 AM/107.5 FM will continue to serve as the flagship station for Coyote football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.&nbsp;

Tyler Henry, Salina native and former play-by-play announcer for three different Division I institutions, will continue to serve as “Voice of the Coyotes.”&nbsp;

“KWU and Eagle have become great partners during the past three years,” said Brad Salois, assistant vice president for marketing and communications. “We have worked together to understand each other’s needs and goals, and it’s created an environment where the brand of our university — not just that of athletics — has become preeminent in our game broadcasts. In return, KWU has supported Eagle in various ventures across its outlets. We’re thankful for the efforts of Tyler and the entire Eagle team that’s made this great relationship possible.”&nbsp;

"From top to bottom, the relationship between Eagle Media and Kansas Wesleyan is very positive," said Devin Hanney, Eagle's sports director. "We have found our goals have a very similar vision. Both Eagle and KWU have very high standards and strive for excellence. We are looking forward to a great future!"&nbsp;

The agreement continues recent momentum around KWU athletics, following the announcement earlier this month of a third straight KCAC Commissioner’s Cup win. The department captured conference titles in baseball and women’s golf this spring, hosted the KCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and recorded runner-up finishes in men’s outdoor track and women’s flag football. All told, 13 different programs saw action in national tournaments this past year.&nbsp;

The Fort Riley Transition Assistance Program will then host the Hiring Our Heroes Career Summit on Tuesday, June 10th at Riley’s Community Center, (446 Seitz Avenue) on Fort Riley.&nbsp; Morning workshops run from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm, followed by a hiring fair, featuring more than 70 local, regional and national employers, from 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm.

The career summit is a specialized event designed to educate, inform, inspire and connect the military community with military-ready employers. All service members, military spouses, veterans and veterans’ caregivers are invited.

The morning workshops will cover topics including SkillBridge programs, fellowships, internships, professional development and using platforms such as LinkedIn. KDOI to participate in World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 

Interim City Manager Jacob Wood has appointed Ron Marsh as the new Director of Public Works for the City of Salina. The search generated 24 candidates from across the country.

Mr. Marsh brings 34 years of management experience to the City of Salina. He served as the administrative manager for Sedgwick County Public Works for over 18 years before moving into city administration in the Kansas communities of Clearwater and Abilene. 

He served as city administrator for the City of Clearwater for over 3 years and most recently as city manager for the City of Abilene since 2021. Along with his public management experience, Mr. Marsh served in the United States Army for over 5 years including roles in leadership and training.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Management from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, and is a graduate of the Kansas University Public Management Center Certified Public Manager Program.

"Ron’s extensive public works and project management experience will provide a seamless transition for our Public Works Department," said Interim City Manager Jacob Wood. "He understands both operations and administration, and we are excited for him to apply his strategic leadership in our organization.”

Mr. Marsh succeeds Jim Teutsch, who retired in March after serving the City of Salina for over 17 years. 

Mr. Marsh will join the management team in late June.

The Juneteenth Committee of Salina is proud to announce the upcoming 18th annual Salina Juneteenth Celebration, taking place next month.

On Thursday, June 19th - Saturday, June 21st, events filled with honoring and celebrating Black history, culture and community will occur around parts of Salina.

Thursday kicks off the celebration at the Salina Art Center Cinema on 150 S. Sante Fe. A special screening of "Juneteenth: Faith &amp; Freedom" will show at 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm, with a panel discussion to follow the 6:00 pm showing. The discussion will be moderated by Pastor Robert M. Cunningham of Lift Church of God in Christ. Both screenings are free and open to public.

Friday continues the celebration in Oakdale Park, with a night full of live soul music from Rudy Love &amp; The Encore, alongside special guests Cash Hollistah and DJ Detroit. This live music event "R&amp;B in the Park," will occur at 6:00 pm. Food trucks will be on site and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and coolers (no glass bottles allowed). This event is free and open to the public.

Ending the celebration on Sunday will be a Juneteenth Parade, which kicks off at 10:00 am at the corner of 9th St. and Iron Ave. The parade is followed by the annual Juneteenth Celebration in Oakdale Park, starting at 11:00 am. Festivities&nbsp;include live performances from Kim Paige and special guest Zafaja, with a keynote address from Brenda McDaniel (2025 inductee into the Kansas Teacher Hall of Fame). Food trucks, vendors and kid's games will be on site along with prize giveaways.

Salina Juneteenth Committee set to host 18th annual Juneteenth celebration 

HAYS — The Wild West Festival committee announced the return of a carnival to the annual festivities with Garry Moore Amusement Carnival, enhancing the event with family-friendly entertainment and activities.

Scheduled to run alongside the festival concerts, the carnival will operate from July 3 to July 5, bringing a nostalgic and fun-filled atmosphere back to the festival grounds.

Advance daily passes offering unlimited carnival rides will be available for $25 each, providing festival-goers savings compared to the on-site, day-of price of $30.

These advance tickets can be purchased directly at the Wild West Festival grounds from June 28 through July 2, between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.

Tickets will also be available during festival hours on July 2. Additional advanced sales locations throughout Hays will be announced in the coming days.

"We're excited to reintroduce the carnival as part of the Wild West Festival experience," said Julie Edgeman, president of the Wild West Festival committee. "Even though this year’s carnival will be somewhat smaller in scale than in past years, we're thrilled to provide an engaging, fun option for children and families while the main stage concerts are underway. The festival's iconic fireworks show returns as a highlight of Independence Day celebrations, illuminating the night sky starting at 10:00 pm on July 4.

The Wild West Fest 5K will return on July 5, with the same course from previous years, beginning at 8 a.m. near the Hays Aquatic Park. Proceeds from the 5K will help support the Hays Striders youth track club.

Additionally, festival-goers can look forward to the traditional Wild West Festival Parade, which will march through downtown Hays beginning at 10 a.m. on July 5.

Extending the excitement beyond festival dates, the Hays Soccer Club will host the Wild West Cup 3-on-3 soccer tournament on July 12.

This annual sports event offers competitive play for all ages and serves as a perfect complement to the community-focused festival.

Red Fern Booksellers continues their "First Friday Live Music Series" with featured musicians and members from the Salina Symphony performing a musical display.

On Friday, June 6th from 5:00 pm -7:00 pm, Red Fern Booksellers (106 S. Sante Fe) will host violinist, Denise Blehm, pianist, Judy Weber and members of the Salina Symphony.

Salina native, Denise Blehm has performed as a member of the Salina Symphony for over 25 years, serving the last 20 seasons as the orchestra’s concertmaster. Growing up, she participated in the Salina Youth Symphony as well as the Salina Symphony under the orchestra’s first music director, Eric Stein. Denise attended Wichita State University and spent 13 years as a member of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra.

Judy Weber, a Salina resident since 1965, received her bachelor’s degree in music education from the former Marymount College and her master’s degree from Kansas State University. She taught at Salina South Middle, Kanopolis Middle School, St. Mary’s Elementary and Ell-Saline Elementary before retiring in 2005.

The City of Salina is proud to announce the completion of a new solar array at the Kenwood Cove Aquatic Park, marking a significant step in its commitment to strategically reinvesting back into the community. 

The solar panels, alongside other energy conservation measures (ECMs), are expected to generate over 118,000 kWh, which translates to $53,000 in annual savings the city can use to fund key community priorities, including upgraded infrastructure, environmental stewardship and enhanced public services.

The project at Kenwood Cove is part of a larger city-wide initiative in partnership with Schneider Electric, a global leader in sustainability and energy solutions, to address deferred maintenance and develop a strategic long-term plan. 

Other efforts include updates to facilities such as Tony's Pizza Events Center, Smoky Hill Museum and Theatre Salina, underscoring the city’s emphasis on energy-efficient development and cultural enrichment.

“This partnership allowed the city to improve the longevity and reliability of our city infrastructure, while holding true to our dedication to fiscal responsibility and community wellbeing,” says Jacob Wood, Interim City Manager for the City of Salina.

Schneider Electric has been pivotal in assisting Salina’s renewable energy ambitions, applying its extensive experience in energy-saving technologies and strategic funding nationwide.

City of Salina reinvests into community after new addition at Kenwood Cove

The American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) has announced a 4-day long weekend event that will pay tribute to fallen U.S. Veterans.

Starting Thursday, June 5th - Sunday June 9th at the Kansas&nbsp;National Guard Armory in Concordia, KS (2115 Blosser Dr.), AVTT invites the public to join a weekend in visiting a tribute wall, participate in auctions, witness live demonstrations and listen to guest speakers and live music.

Before the event begins, the American Legion Riders, Patriots Riders and Sons of the Legion will escort a U.S. Veteran Tribute Wall from Salina to Concordia on the morning of June 5th. Once it arrives, it will be ready for public display at 4:00 pm that same day.

"With all the flags whipping in the wind, I just can't imagine what a beautiful sight that will be," said AVTT Senior Coordinator, Rita Goodwin.

Once the tribute wall is established, it will be open every morning at 7:00 am.

The Kansas Highway Patrol will speak during the event on Thursday. A K-9 demonstration will be on Friday, along with military band performances and patriotic music.

"The speakers will remind and encourage us that freedom is not free," said Goodwin.

Goodwin thanked all the sponsors, First Responders and people from all over the North Central Kansas region who supported in making this event happen.

"It's amazing to see the support and stories that we have heard from our Veterans," stated Goodwin.

Attendees will be assisted when trying to find names on the tribute wall. Transportation services from OCCK will also be provided throughout the weekend.

A gofundme fundraiser was started by Minerva Romero, who is the sister of the mother who's one-year old boy suffered the injury on Sunday.

The "More Than You Think Scholarship,"&nbsp; is now available for students with disabilities to apply. The application deadline is set for Friday, June 13th. All applications must be postmarked or received by the deadline.

Eligible applicants for this scholarship must meet the following meet the following requirements:

Reside in one of the following Kansas counties; Saline, Ottawa, Cloud, Republic, Jewell, Mitchell, Lincoln, Ellsworth or Dickinson, be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and meet the definition of disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Scholarship recipients may use the funds toward any credentialed post-secondary program, including college, university, community college, vocational training or cosmetology school. Multiple winners may be selected, and awards of up to $1,250 each will be made directly to the educational institution.

The Saline County Health Department released their quarterly update regarding highlights of clinical services,&nbsp;WIC, child care licensing, maternal and child health, public education, emergency preparedness and administration.

On Tuesday, the Health Department presented the update in front of County Commissioners.&nbsp;
