Pruning is an important practice on roses.&nbsp; Proper pruning will keep roses vigorous and will encourage more flower production.&nbsp; In general, the best time to prune roses is in the spring before much new growth appears and after the danger of a hard killing frost has passed.&nbsp; Now is a good time to prune and here are some pruning tips to consider.

For all roses be sure to remove any dead stubs, otherwise, canker fungi can invade stubs and progress into healthy tissue during the summer months. To remove stubs, use sharp shears and make a cut at a 45-to 50-degree angle about a quarter-inch above a healthy bud.

Pruning of shrub roses focuses on removing the following:&nbsp; all dead wood down to the crown or one inch into the healthy green canes, all signs of cankers (dark sunken areas), all weak, spindly or deformed growth (rule of thumb is to remove anything smaller than the thickness of a pencil), canes growing toward the center of the plant, all suckers down to the crown, and thinning out remaining healthy canes to the desired shape and height.&nbsp;

Three pruning styles are used with hybrid tea roses – each with its own specific purpose:

Heavy or Severe Pruning – Usually done on well-established, vigorous plants. This is intended to produce large, showy flowers. To do this, prune back to three or four healthy canes with three to six eyes per cane. Canes are normally 6-12 inches long.

Moderate Pruning – Is done on well-established, healthy plants. It is designed to increase the number of flowers produced rather than increase size. Prune stems to 12-18 inches long. Leave between five and seven canes with at least seven buds per cane.

Light Pruning – This rejuvenates plants after years of neglect, but can also be used on newly- established plants. It helps to maximize leaf area for energy production and renewed vigor. Leave five to seven canes that are about 18 inches or more in length.&nbsp;

When pruning climbing roses, follow the above recommendations for pruning shrub roses. Large-flowered climbers and climbing hybrid tea roses should be treated in a way similar to shrub-type roses, pruning in the spring before new growth appears.&nbsp; The spring-flowering climbers should be pruned after they have flowered in the spring.&nbsp;

The canes on most climbing roses remain healthy for about three to four years, which makes it necessary to remove some of the older growth every year. The canes should be cut to a height of 18 to 30 inches to help shape the plant.

Ramblers and fast-growing climbers do best if they are pruned after they have flowered for the first time in the spring and may occasionally need to be shaped once or twice through the summer months.

GRAVES: Prune roses for better flowering

The April meeting of the Granny Brigade will feature guest speaker Kim Borchers presenting on the topic of human trafficking.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 15 at 7 p.m. at the Carver Center, 315 N. 2nd Street in Salina.

Organizers say the event will be an informative session, and the public is encouraged to attend and invite a friend or two.

Pavement will be removed to locate utilities for the installation of a wastewater pipe. Water Well Road, between Centennial Road and Scanlan Avenue, will be closed to thru traffic. Traffic control and detour signage will be placed Wednesday afternoon. Westbound traffic will be detoured north along Centennial Road, west along Vortex Avenue, and south along Scanlan Avenue.&nbsp; Eastbound traffic will be detoured north along Scanlan Avenue,&nbsp;east on Vortex Ave, and south on Centennial Road. Work is expected to&nbsp;last four days and be completed by April 14, 2025, weather permitting.

Access to property owners will be maintained from the west.

Appropriate barriers will be in place to ensure the safety of workers.

Motorists may encounter minor delays and are encouraged to avoid work zones when possible.

Construction notice issued for Water Well and Centennial roads

Salina Education Foundation has selected its 2025 Loan Initiative for Future Teachers (LIFT) recipients. The following five recipients were selected from a pool of 10 applicants by a committee consisting of Salina Education Foundation Trustees, USD 305 staff, and community members.&nbsp;

Abby Commerford&nbsp;– Abby is a senior at Southeast of Saline High School, with plans to attend Kansas State University and major in Elementary Education. She believes that teaching children to be kind humans in this world is such an important job. Abby wants to help students reach their goals and build intentional relationships while fostering accountability early. She wants her classroom to be a safe place for students and to help them to feel supported on any endeavor.&nbsp;

Elena Herbel&nbsp;– Elena is a graduate of South High School and is a junior at Kansas State University majoring in Elementary Education. She says she’s always known that she wanted to find a way to help people with her future career. She wants to be a teacher because she wants to be able to help others enjoy education as much as she has while growing up.&nbsp;In her free time, she’s usually&nbsp;at home, where she enjoys cooking, watching movies, playing the guitar, and doing crafts.

Lucas Nutter&nbsp;– Lucas is a graduate of Central High School and is a sophomore at Kansas Wesleyan University majoring in Music Education with an emphasis in Strings. Lucas realized from an early age that music was his greatest area of interest. He credits his music teachers for helping him to learn that perfection isn’t the goal – growth, persistence, and the joy of it matters more, and this lesson has shaped his approach to learning in all areas.

Charles Snyder&nbsp;–&nbsp;Charles is in his fourth year at McPherson College, studying elementary education, with an endorsement in special education. As a high school student, he would spend summers working as a youth sports instructor, which helped him realize a passion for helping teach children new skills. His grandmother was a special education teacher who also inspired him to leave a positive impact on future students, much like she did with her students.

Katie Snyder&nbsp;–&nbsp;Katie, a South High grad, is studying to become a High Incidence Special Education Teacher through Fort Hays State University. She credits the passionate, understanding, and dedicated teachers she had growing up with making an immediate and lifelong impact on her life. That impact is also why she wants to follow in their footsteps and pursue education as her career. Katie’s work as a para and as a coach has reaffirmed her passion for teaching students.

LIFT recipients receive up to $5,000 in forgivable loans, renewable annually after completion of their freshman year in college. Upon becoming certified teachers, they are eligible for hire to teach in USD 305 schools. Loans are forgivable for each year they teach in Salina public schools. The LIFT program is supported by charitable donations from individuals, local charitable foundations and Saline County businesses.&nbsp;

Salina Education Foundation is governed by a volunteer board of trustees. Established in 1987 it endeavors to promote and support educational excellence by providing resources to enhance opportunities for the students and staff of Salina’s public schools.

The Salina Symphony will close its 2024-2025 season with a powerful presentation of Mozart’s Requiem on Sunday, May 4 at 4 p.m. at the Stiefel Theatre.

A work of grandeur and reflection, Mozart’s Requiem will be performed with the Kansas Wesleyan University Philharmonic Choir and the South High New Dawn Singers. The masterwork explores timeless themes of life, death, and redemption through rich, expressive music that continues to move audiences centuries after it was composed.

Before the Requiem, the concert will open with Adoration by Florence Price, featuring principal clarinetist Chris Johnson. Violinist Lun Li, a rising star in the classical world, will then take the stage to perform Joseph Bologne’s Ninth Violin Concerto. Bologne, a brilliant 18th-century Black composer and contemporary of Mozart, is finally being recognized for his extraordinary contributions to classical music.

A pre-concert talk with Maestro Yaniv Segal and David Corman will be held at 3 p.m. at the Stiefel Theatre. Doors open at 2:45 p.m., and attendees should enter through the main theatre entrance.

WASHINGTON - The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) has played a crucial role in helping millions of low-to-moderate income workers out of poverty. A component of the Tax Reduction Act, EITC was signed into law by President Gerald Ford on March 29, 1975. What began as a modest means to provide financial help to working families has evolved through a series of legislative changes into one of the federal government’s largest anti-poverty programs.&nbsp;

Over the past 50 years, the EITC has had a significant impact in the lives of eligible taxpayers claiming the credit. As of Dec. 2024, approximately 23 million workers and families received about&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.irs.gov%2Fcredits-deductions%2Findividuals%2Fearned-income-tax-credit%2Fearned-income-tax-credit-statistics/1/01000195dce0cf0e-88de1671-08d9-40dc-b8a0-82d465548950-000000/-DVvBu1ZBbKp5MZ1ZEamMMzTEtupShjKIwoTYhlb8kw=398">$64 billion</a>&nbsp;from EITC.&nbsp;

In 1975, the maximum credit amount for EITC was $400. For tax year 2024, the EITC can be up to $7,830. Today, the EITC continues to provide financial assistance to low-to-moderate income working families and individuals, with or without children, by helping them cover essentials, save for the future and build financial stability.&nbsp;

Saline County Treasurer Jim DuBois is reminding residents that the second half of 2024 property taxes for real estate and personal property are due Monday, May 12, 2025. The deadline is extended due to the regular May 10 deadline falling on a Saturday.

Taxpayers are asked to include the remittance stub from the bottom of the original tax statement with their payment. Those who would like a paid receipt returned should clearly indicate that on the stub.

Anyone who has misplaced their tax statement can contact the Treasurer’s Office at (785) 309-5860 to get the amount due and tax ID number. Copies of statements can be emailed or mailed upon request.

DuBois noted that if the first half of the 2024 taxes has not been paid, interest is now due. Taxpayers should call the office before sending payment to confirm the correct amount owed. No second half notices will be mailed.

Second half property taxes due May 12 in Saline County

MANHATTAN, Kan. — The deadline is approaching to apply for the 2025 session of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas, scheduled for June 1–7 at Kansas State University in Manhattan. Applications are due by Wednesday, April 30, though late submissions may be considered if space allows.

This year marks the 87th session of Kansas Boys State and the 33rd consecutive year the program will be held at K-State.

Traditionally open to high school juniors, the program has again expanded eligibility to include current sophomores. There is no cap on how many students a school, community or American Legion post may sponsor.

Boys State is a weeklong immersive experience that teaches leadership, teamwork and civic responsibility through a simulated government. Delegates form political parties, run for office, and manage local and state government functions in a hands-on learning environment. The program aims to develop personal responsibility and foster respect for the democratic process and those who serve in the military to protect it.

The program costs $375, but most participants receive sponsorships covering a majority of the expense. Families are typically asked to contribute $50. Applications can be submitted online at <a href="https://ksbstate.org">ksbstate.org</a>.

Participants may earn three hours of college credit in Introduction to Political Science (POLSC 110) through K-State and can also pursue Eagle Scout merit badges. Attendees are also eligible for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship. The Kansas finalist will receive at least $1,250 and may be considered for a national award of up to $10,000.

Mike Finnegan, Ph.D., assistant professor and director of the Strengths initiative at Kansas State, will deliver the keynote address during the opening session at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 1, in McCain Auditorium. Finnegan, a 1998 Boys State alum, leads efforts to help students grow their unique talents and enhance well-being across the K-State campus.

Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab, also a 1998 alumnus, will offer remarks and administer the oath of office to the newly elected mayors during a ceremony at 6:50 p.m. Monday, June 2, at the Boys State Assembly Area outside Goodnow and Marlatt halls.

Saline County Jail Bookings, April 7

Governor Laura Kelly announced in a press release on Friday that she has signed off on seven additional bills this week that will become new laws. These include the following:

• Substitute for Senate Bill 67 – authorizes certified registered nurse anesthetists to prescribe, procure and administer drugs consistent with registered nurse anesthetist’s education and qualifications.

•Senate Bill 89 – authorizes the Kansas Department of Agriculture to assess a participant fee for poultry producers that wish to voluntarily participate in the National Poultry Improvement Plan, a state-federal cooperative testing and certification program that seeks to eradicate disease in the poultry industry.

• Senate Bill 97 – requires vehicle dealers to apply for a dealer inventory-only title for certain used non-highway vehicles that a vehicle dealer obtains.

• Substitute for House Bill 2152 – shifts Kansas’ investment strategy for public funds to encourage those funds be deposited in Kansas financial institutions. This change will help ensure taxpayer dollars are invested in local communities, increase economic activity in the state and give Kansans access to additional capital to finance investments in their homes, businesses or communities, according to the Office of the Governor.

• House Bill 2359 – enacts the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act and the Uniform Guardianship, Conservatorship and other Protective Arrangements Act.

• House Bill 2338 – authorizes the Kansas Board of Cosmetology to issue temporary location and temporary guest artist permits and establishes criteria therefor.

• House Bill 2307 – transfers the prenatal and postnatal diagnosed conditions awareness programs from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to the Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities.

Gov. Kelly signs seven bills into law

On Saturday, April 5, 2025, at about 1:19 AM, Officers of the Salina Police Department were dispatched to Chuck’s, 600 N. Santa Fe, in reference to a disturbance where a subject had a knife. Upon arrival, officers located blood inside and outside the bar. Witnesses reported several subjects being stabbed and had driven themselves to the hospital.

A suspect description had been provided, and a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper observed a subject matching the description fleeing from the area on foot. Law enforcement officers located the subject several blocks from the bar and took the subject into custody without incident. The subject was identified as Dylan Michael Henning, 21-years-old, of Salina.

Law enforcement officers were then advised that two victims with stab wounds had arrived at the hospital for treatment. A 24-year-old male of Salina received one stab wound and was admitted to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. A 27-year-old male of Salina had three stab wounds and was treated and released.

The investigation determined that the disturbance began in the bar when Henning and a female associate were removed from the bar. While outside the bar, the disturbance continued when Henning is alleged to have produced a knife and stabbed the victims before fleeing the area. Alcohol was a contributing factor.

Henning was booked into the Saline County Jail in reference four counts of Aggravated Battery with a deadly weapon, felony Interference and one count of Disorderly Conduct.

The investigation is on-going. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact the Salina Police Department.

SPD: Two men stabbed outside Chuck’s Bar; suspect arrested after foot chase

The first thing that grabs your attention when you step into Kansas Hempire in Salina isn’t just the well-organized shelves of hemp-based wellness products or the colorful assortment of knits and sweaters — it’s the walls.

A bold mural filled with technicolor mushrooms and the phrase “Good Vibes” in groovy, oversized lettering stretches around the shop, instantly inviting guests in and setting a relaxed tone — just as owner Megan Carolan envisioned.

Before Kansas Hempire, the building at 1300 S. Santa Fe Ave. was home to the House of Sight and Sound, a local music mecca that pulsed with vinyl records, incense, and underground energy from 1971 until its closure in 2011. For Carolan, keeping that counter culture spirit alive was never a question.

“I always believed this building still had so much potential,” Carolan said. “I knew it needed to be a heady-style shop — a place where people feel safe, creative, and accepted.”

To bring her vision to life, Carolan enlisted Junction City based muralist Mindy Allen, whose bold, colorful designs already had a strong following in the community. 

“I’d followed Mindy’s work for years,” Carolan said. “I wanted an artist who naturally fit the energy of this space, and she absolutely delivered.”

For Allen, the project felt like a perfect creative match. 

“It was a design that was right up my alley,” she said. “Once we scheduled a date, I was really excited to get started. I enjoyed the whole process.”

The mural wraps around several walls inside the store, and Allen approached it one section at a time. She began by taking photos of the space and planning how each wall would flow into the next. 

“I try to make each wall feel connected, but also let it have its own identity,” she explained. “Each piece is kind of like its own mural, but they all work together.”

Painting the space involved layering multiple coats of bright, vivid colors — especially challenging for shades like lime green.

“To get those bright tones to pop, you have to build them up,” Allen said. “The lime green took several coats, and I had to start with a lighter color underneath just to get it to show up over the gray wall. Otherwise, it looked like colored water.”

Allen said her daughter, Haley, joined her in the painting process, which not only helped the project get done faster, but also made the experience all that more enjoyable.&nbsp;

The Kansas Hempire mural is one of several large-scale projects Allen has taken on. In 2024, she completed a mural on a grain elevator in Inman, Kansas, celebrating the region’s agricultural history and the legacy of 150 years of Turkey Red wheat.

“That elevator was a challenge, but one of the most rewarding projects I’ve done,” she said. “And it showed me I could handle big, complicated surfaces — which really helped with this wraparound mural.”

Carolan gave Allen full creative freedom, which Allen said she appreciated. 

“The more freedom an artist has, the better the result can be,” she said. “Megan was great to work with — very easygoing and open to ideas.”

Carolan said the finished mural has already made an impact.

“It’s about making people feel something,” she said. “When they walk in, we want them to feel connected.”

The two plan to collaborate again soon on a mural at Carolan’s Abilene location. For now, the vibrant interior mural at Kansas Hempire — located at 1300 S. Santa Fe Ave., Salina, KS 67401 — serves as a tribute to the city’s creative spirit, past, present, and future.

Plumer Landscaping &amp; Irrigation and the Lindsborg Greenhouse &amp; Nursery are inviting families to celebrate 15 years in business with a weekend of creative fun, community giving, and a look ahead to something even bigger.

This weekend, April 4–6, owner Erin Plumer is hosting fairy garden workshops each evening from 5 to 6 p.m. at the nursery. Participants can bring their own containers or purchase supplies on-site. Soil and class instruction will be donated. A $10 ticket helps cover costs, and 10% of the weekend’s proceeds will benefit the Lindsborg Childhood Development Center.

“This is about giving back to the community that helped raise us,” Plumer said. “We grew up in Salina and Lindsborg, and we wanted to do something fun and meaningful.”

The celebration continues the following weekend, April 18–19, with a special open house and fundraiser honoring the life of Dawson Hogan, a young man who tragically passed away in a vehicle crash on I-70 during a windstorm. Free pulled pork barbecue and refreshments will be offered, and 10% of proceeds will again go toward supporting a local cause. Plumer, who grew up with Dawson’s mother Dana Bonilla Hogan, said the event will be a celebration of Dawson’s life and a show of support for his family.

“We’re combining our anniversary with a way to honor Dawson and lift up his family,” Plumer said. “It’s really about community, remembrance, and planting something new—literally.”

Salina Police Department officers are investigating a break-in at Cleve’s Marine and Sporting early Thursday morning.

According to Capt. Paul Forrester, officers were dispatched around 7:15 a.m. to the store at 136 S. Broadway after employees received an alarm notification. When police arrived, they discovered that forced entry had been made into a portion of the building.

Several firearms were reported missing but were found just outside the building. The recovered items included a .22 air rifle, a semi-automatic .22 rifle, and another unidentified rifle. All three were damaged and in disrepair.

The total estimated loss is approximately $300. The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Salina Police Department.

Saline County Jail Bookings, April 4

Crimestoppers On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at about 2:30 PM, two females entered Sam’s Club, 2919 Market Place, Salina, Kansas, and placed a Dyson Vacuum, Epson Ecotank, Shark hairdryer, clothing items and several cases of food and drinks into a cart. The two subjects then attempted to exit the store through the “Scan and Go” exit but were not allowed to exit due to not having a receipt.

The two then went back to the shopping area of the business before pushing out the cart through the main entrance of the business. They loaded the items into a vehicle and left the area. Total loss was valued at over $1,300.

 </figure>Crimestoppers On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at about 2:30 PM, two females entered Sam’s Club, 2919 Market Place, Salina, Kansas, and placed a Dyson Vacuum, Epson Ecotank, Shark hairdryer, clothing items and several cases of food and drinks into a cart. The two subjects then attempted to exit the store through the “Scan and Go” exit but were not allowed to exit due to not having a receipt.The two then went back to the shopping area of the business before pushing out the cart through the main entrance of the business. They loaded the items into a vehicle and left the area. Sam’s Club theft is this week’s Crimestoppers

The City of Salina’s 17th annual E-waste Recycling Event will be held at the Berkley Family Recreational Area, 841 Markley Rd. on Saturday, May 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We are delighted to be joined by the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank again this year to collect donations of non-perishables and personal hygiene goods.

E-waste refers to consumer electronic equipment that is obsolete and needs to be discarded properly. Examples include computers, televisions, cameras, gaming systems, phones, and microwaves.

Recycling electronic equipment not only preserves resources like aluminum, copper, gold, silver, and ferrous metals; it also diverts toxic materials like mercury, lead, and cadmium from the landfill. When electronic equipment is recycled, landfill space is also saved.

The event is open to Saline County residents, businesses, and organizations. Nearly any device with a cord or using a battery will be accepted. However, there are some exceptions. To see a detailed list of items that will and will not be accepted at the event, visit: www.salina-ks.gov/ewaste.

Most items will be recycled free of charge; however, there will be a fee collected for the following items:

Participants are asked to remain in their vehicles while staff members collect the e-waste and Food Bank donations. Once drop off is complete, participants should exit onto Markley Road at Dean Evans Stadium.
