Salina Police are currently investigating a slew of connected business burglaries that occurred on Wednesday to the end of November.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD), there are several locations in downtown these burglaries have reportedly occurred at. 

- Salina Masonic Lodge #60 (143 S 3rd); Undisclosed amount of money from cash box and a suitcase stolen.

- Action Travel (116 S 7th St. Suite A); Unknown items stolen.

- Storage building (116 S 7th St. Suite #B); Broken into, and does not appear anything was stolen as of yet.

- Strand Beauty Salon (214 W. Walnut); Shampoo and conditioner stolen.

Damage made to the businesses were evident as well, according to SPD.

Lt. Andrew Zeigler stated SPD has considered that more victims of business burglaries have occurred downtown, which have not been reported yet.

"We want the public's help on this, if there is any more damage especially in the downtown area, we want them to get a hold of us, so we can look into this," said Lt. Zeigler.

According to Lt. Zeigler, SPD is actively collected forensic and video evidence of the business burglaries.&nbsp;

Slew of connected Salina business burglaries being investigated by law enforcement, updates to follow

Salina law enforcement arrested two suspects that were connected to two different burglaries at Salina businesses.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD) on Sunday into Monday, November 24, two burglaries occurred at Acoustic Sounds (605 W North St) and Bishop Street Tavern (717 Bishop St).&nbsp;

Stolen from Acoustic Sounds, was a zebra brand scanner and miscellaneous work tools. An undisclosed amount of alcohol was stolen from Bishop Street Tavern.

Salina Police conducted a search warrant at a storage unit&nbsp;on 400 block of north 9th, and recovered the scanner and tools that were stolen.&nbsp;

Afterwards, officers were dispatched to the Budget King Motel (809 N. Broadway) on Tuesday, November 25 and arrested two suspects connected to the burglaries.

Arrested was 25-year old, Joseph Mastin and a 15-year old male.

Mastin was booked into the Saline County Jail for the requested charges of Burglary x2, Theft x2 and Contributing to a Child's Misconduct.

The juvenile was transported to a Juvenile Detention Center.

LINDSBORG - The Aglow Trio of Karen McLaughlin Large (on flute), Alyssa Morris (on oboe), and Amanda Arrington (on piano), will perform works by Peter Cohn, Madeleine Dring, Tony Rodriguez, and more at the Sandzén Gallery (401 North First St.)&nbsp;on Sunday, December 7 at 2:00 pm.

Combining their extensive experience as soloists, chamber musicians, and educators with years of close friendship, they form a special trio and are dedicated to bringing light and optimism to their audiences.

 By carefully curating programs aimed at highlighting new and unique voices and promoting positivity, the trio strives to leave their audiences feeling inspired and uplifted. They have performed multiple tours in the US and abroad, are American Prize Finalists, and recorded and released two albums.

There is no charge for the concert, however, donations are appreciated.

Karen McLaughlin Large enjoys performing in concerto, solo, chamber, and large ensemble settings. She is Assistant Professor of Flute at Florida State University, College of Music and teaches flute lessons, flute ensemble, low flutes, Baroque flute, and Wind and Percussion Pedagogy. She is passionate about helping students navigate their unique paths in the music world. Dr. Large's research interests include performing classical works inspired by popular genres, flute transcriptions of Romantic music, and more. She has earned DM, MM, and BM degrees at Florida State University.

Alyssa Morris serves as Associate Professor of Oboe at Kansas State University, along with being the principal oboist of the Topeka Symphony and Chamber Orchestra of the Smoky Valley. She has appeared in performances around the world and as a concerto soloist at the Kennedy Center. Additionally, she is an American Prize finalist and PEO Scholar. Alyssa has been an International Barlow Composition Commission Winner, ROCO’s 2021 Composer-in-Residence, and her music is performed worldwide.

Amanda Arrington serves as Senior Professor of Practice at Kansas State University. She maintains an active concert schedule, collaborating with artists, faculty, and students in performances across the country and abroad. An advocate of new music, you can find her premiering works and performing in renowned venues, including the Sydney Opera House, the Kennedy Center, and the National WWI &amp; National WWII museums.

Peace Lutheran in New Cambria to host annual Christmas potluck with table service

ABILENE - Abilene is welcoming visitors and locals to celebrate the season during Cowtown Christmas, a three-day holiday experience filled with beloved traditions, festive lights, live entertainment, and seasonal activities for all ages.

Recognized as one of the Best Historic Small Towns by USA TODAY, Abilene becomes the center of holiday celebration as the community comes together for this special weekend.

From Friday, December 5 through Sunday, December 7, guests can enjoy a full schedule of seasonal activities throughout town, including a magical train ride aboard the Abilene &amp; Smoky Valley Railroad’s Cowtown Santa Express, the Heritage Homes Association’s 48th Homes for the Holidays Tour, live theatre at Great Plains Theatre, Christmas markets, family-friendly events, and holiday light displays.

“Cowtown Christmas brings together the very best of Abilene in one meaningful celebration,” said Julie Roller Weeks, director of the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau. “From our historic homes and holiday events to our welcoming local businesses, it is a weekend that showcases why Abilene continues to be a destination people love to visit.”

Classic holiday experiences include Old Fashioned Christmas at the Dickinson County Heritage Center, complete with carolers, bell choirs, carousel rides, Santa visits, kids' crafts, and homemade goodies. 

The Historic Seelye Mansion will welcome guests for tours of the beautifully decorated home, featuring festive trees throughout, hundreds of nutcrackers, and vibrant poinsettias.

The weekend also features Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn The Musical at Great Plains Theatre, Cowboy Christmas at Old Abilene Town with chili and cinnamon rolls, the 50th Annual Abilene Handcrafters Winter Market, and the Festival of Trees benefiting Abilene Core Community.

“Cowtown Christmas highlights so much of what makes Abilene special during the holidays,” Roller Weeks said. “It is a time when families create traditions and visitors see firsthand why our community continues to be a holiday destination.”

Saturday evening includes the Christmas Cruise for Food and the Cowtown Christmas Light Showdown, where guests can vote for their favorite Griswold-style decorations while donating canned goods to the Abilene Area Food Bank. Festivities continue at Little Ike Park with the Mayor’s Holiday Tree Lighting, Santa visits, and a performance by AHS Singers.

Traces of snowfall have touched down in Central Kansas, with more snow expected for Monday, plus cold air throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Throughout Central Kansas, colder air will spread southward across the region for Saturday along with strong and gusty northwest winds. Wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph are likely.

Rain will change to snow briefly over parts of central Kansas through mid-morning on Saturday. Minor accumulations on elevated and grassy surfaces are possible.

Low of 7 degrees is expected for Sunday, with a high of 30 in Salina.

Salina is also under a wind advisory until 6:00 pm for Saturday.

According to the US National Weather Service, light to moderate snow is expected to move-in from the west on Monday and provide many locations with the first measurable snow of the season. 

 Snow will start around or shortly after sunrise and continue through the Monday afternoon hours with travel impacts likely, especially across central and northeast Kansas.

Highs are expected to be between 27-32 degrees, with the low expected to be around 14 degrees throughout the region.

Memorial Health System in Abilene and Lindsborg Community Hospital were&nbsp; both recognized with 2025 Performance Leadership Awards from The Chartis Center for Rural Health as&nbsp; part of National Rural Health Day on November 20.&nbsp;

Both hospitals earned Top Quartile recognition in Patient Perspective, reflecting strong patient&nbsp; experience performance compared to rural hospitals nationwide. In addition, Lindsborg Community&nbsp; Hospital received a Top Quartile Performance Leadership Award in Quality, further highlighting its&nbsp; clinical excellence.&nbsp;

The annual Performance Leadership Awards are based on results from the Chartis Rural Hospital&nbsp; Performance INDEX, a comprehensive benchmarking tool used across the country to evaluate rural&nbsp; hospital performance. INDEX results are relied upon by rural hospitals, health systems, hospital&nbsp; associations and state offices of rural health to assess performance in areas critical to hospital&nbsp; operations, finance and community care.&nbsp;

LINCOLN COUNTY - On Thanksgiving morning at around 6:00 am, a wind turbine in Lincoln County reportedly caught on fire.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, a wind turbine near the Ellsworth exit on I-70 burst into flames.

The fire was extinguished by the Westfall Fire Department.&nbsp;

No injuries were reported and the cause of fire is unknown.

Brief history of the "First Thanksgiving"

At the start of the 17th century, parts of New England was home to a variety of diverse Indigenous groups. Political leaders, known as the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.reed.edu/indianconverts/studyguides/social_hierarchies/sachems_and_royal_famillies.html#:~:text=Sachems%20were%20the%20leaders%20of%20New%20England's,or%20women.%20Female%20rulers%20were%20called%20squa%2Dsachems.">Sachems</a>&nbsp;had been trading with Europeans for over 100 years, before the Pilgrims (or Separatists).

The Pilgrims arrived to New England (Plymouth, Massachusetts) by way of the Mayflower in 1620, after fleeing from facing severe persecution in England, because they disagreed with the state-run church. 

Seeking for religious freedom, the Pilgrims arrived to the land of the <a href="https://plimoth.org/for-students/homework-help/who-are-the-wampanoag">Wampanoag</a>&nbsp;in Plymouth, and&nbsp;peace was made between the two groups.

According to the <a href="https://visit.archives.gov/whats-on/explore-exhibits/thanksgiving-historical-perspectives">National Archives</a>, at least 90 Wampanoag joined 52 Pilgrims for a feast to mark a successful harvest. This occurred following a brutal winter where many colonists died from lack of food supply, before the Pilgrims and Wampanoag worked together.

Today, it is remembered as the First Thanksgiving.

The First Thanksgiving story emphasizes a peaceful exchange between the Pilgrims and Wampanoag. 

However, within a generation, a war would erupt and the Wampanoag would ultimately lose their political independence and much of their territory. This was due through a series of conflicts and most notably, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.history.com/articles/king-philips-war">King Philip's War</a>.

Brief history of the US Federal Holiday, Thanksgiving

According to the National Archives, the federal Thanksgiving holiday has its roots in one of the country’s bitterest moments of division as we know, the Civil War at the start of 1861.&nbsp;

In July 1863, the <a href="https://www.gettysburgpa.gov/history/slideshows/battle-history">Battle of Gettysburg</a>&nbsp;resulted in more than 50,000 American casualties. As tensions and divisions were present amid the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued the "Day of National Thanksgiving" proclamation on July 15, 1863:

Afterwards, on October 3rd that same year, Lincoln issued the Thanksgiving holiday to occur on a uniform date (the last Thursday in November) to promote national unity and healing during the Civil War. 

Lincoln was not the first President to issue a Thanksgiving proclamation, but his order set a precedent to “observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving” every year for decades to follow.

In 1939, concerned that the shortened holiday shopping season might dampen the nation’s economic recovery from the <a href="https://www.nixonlibrary.gov/news/great-depression#:~:text=The%20Great%20Depression%20was%20a%20severe%20economic,**DocsTeach**%20*%20**Primary%20sources%20and%20teaching%20activities**">Great Depression</a>, 32nd President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a Presidential Proclamation moving Thanksgiving to the third Thursday of November.

Sixteen states refused to accept the change, and for the next two years Thanksgiving was celebrated on two different days. 

To end the confusion, Congress passed a law in 1941 establishing the fourth Thursday in November as the federal Thanksgiving Day holiday as we know it today.

The Tyler J. Ritter Legacy Fund presented a check to its first recipient, the Central Kansas Foundation (CKF) Addiction Treatment facility in Salina.&nbsp;

Tyler J. Ritter grew up in Salina, where he attended Sacred Heart. There, he found a passion for basketball. He played the sport for many years, graduating from Sacred Heart in 2016. In 2017, however, Ritter fell and injured his wrists. His doctors prescribed opioids to help with the pain. This led Ritter down the road to his addiction.&nbsp;

Ritter entered rehab in 2020, and by November of 2022, Ritter had beaten his addiction and was sober and optimistic about the future. He returned to Salina with the intent of joining Kansas Wesleyan University's Basketball team. On December 1, 2022, Tyler J. Ritter passed away at age 24.&nbsp;

Tyler Ritter's father, Mark Ritter, started the Tyler J. Ritter Legacy Fund with the intention to save a life. Tyler Ritter always gave his all to others, and, with the help of the Greater Salina Community Foundation, Mark Ritter set up a fund that will live on in perpetuity, honoring his son's character and memory.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Now, the Tyler J Ritter Legacy Fund officially awarded its first check, paying for the treatment fees of a patient in need at CKF Addiction Treatment. Both the organization of CKF and the anonymous patient issued statements of gratitude for the Legacy Fund and the Ritter Family.
