Saline County snowplows are on the move- track their progress here

By SALINA POST The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has arrested Manuel Johnson-Ponce, 29, of Salina, related to his role in a Feb. 4 standoff and officer-involved shooting in Salina.

KBI agents arrested Johnson-Ponce following his release from Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; Agents then transported Johnson-Ponce to the Saline County Jail where he was booked on a warrant for three counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, two counts of criminal threat, aggravated endangering a child, domestic battery, criminal restraint, and criminal trespass.

At around 11:20 a.m. Feb. 4, SPD received a call from a woman who reported an armed domestic disturbance at her home, in the 900 block of Birch Drive in Salina.

Preliminary information indicates that when officers arrived, they contacted a female subject outside the house and learned that a male subject, later identified as Manuel Johnson-Ponce, 29, of Salina, had barricaded inside the home with a three-year old child. He was making threats to the child and officers.

Around 12 p.m., SPD’s SWAT team also responded to the scene. KBI’s High Risk Warrant Team (HRWT) was requested to assist around 12:15 p.m.

During the standoff, Johnson-Ponce refused to comply with repeated commands to come out of the house. He would also not allow the toddler to leave. Around 1 p.m. an officer from SPD fired rounds striking Johnson-Ponce. Immediately following the shooting, law enforcement officers safely rescued the child from the home.

Officers rendered aid to Johnson-Ponce. EMS arrived and transported him to a local hospital. Johnson-Ponce was treated for non-life threatening injuries and is in stable condition. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

This independent investigation aims to discover all events leading up to the officer-involved shooting. In police use of force cases, the KBI releases details to the public as soon as possible. This information is preliminary in nature, and is based on evidence collected and early statements of the parties involved, witnesses, medical personnel and others. It does not represent final or thorough findings which take several weeks to complete.

KBI: Suspect in Salina officer shooting moved from hospital to jail

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers are investigating a burglary at Virg’s Auto Repair that resulted in vehicle damage, theft, and thousands of dollars in property damage early Monday morning.

According to SPD Captain James Feldman, officers responded to Virg’s Auto Repair, 501 E. Pacific, around 5:45 a.m. on February 10 after employees reported a break-in. A back window had been shattered to gain entry to the business.

During the investigation, employees discovered damage to two vehicles on the lot. A white Lexus ES300 had its front bumper partially ripped off and a shattered headlight, while a silver Chevy Avalanche sustained a dent on the front driver’s side wheel well. An airsoft pistol was reported stolen from the office.

A 2020 gray Dodge Durango Pursuit, valued at $16,000, was also stolen from the property. The Durango, owned by a 36-year-old Salina man, was driven through a fence into a Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) property at 1006 N. 3rd Street and then through a KDOT-owned gate. The damage was estimated at $5,000.

The stolen vehicle was last seen in the McPherson area shortly before being reported missing. SPD officers recovered the stolen airsoft pistol near the spot where the Durango had been taken. A possible suspect has been identified, and the investigation is ongoing.

A 22-year-old man from McPherson told police he had parked his white 2018 Dodge Charger, valued at $14,000, outside the movie theater around 7:50 p.m. and left his keys inside the vehicle before heading inside to watch a movie. When he returned, the car was gone.

Officers used the FLOCK camera system to track the vehicle’s location near Ninth Street and Schilling Road. They found the Charger in a parking lot, and as they approached, a male suspect ran from the vehicle. Officers pursued and apprehended the 16-year-old behind Walmart.

The teen, a Salina resident, was arrested on suspicion of felony theft. Feldman reported no damage was reported to the vehicle.

The National Weather Service in Wichita has issued a&nbsp;Winter Storm Watch&nbsp;for portions of central, south-central, and southeast Kansas, including Salina, from&nbsp;Tuesday evening through Wednesday afternoon.

UPDATED: NWS: Winter storm warning issued for Saline County

With a wintry mix of snow expected to begin Tuesday and continue into Wednesday, the City of Salina is preparing roadways ahead of the potential weather.

City crews will begin salting all roads before precipitation starts and will remain on standby to deploy as needed.

	•	Isolated light snow showers could begin shortly after midnight Tuesday, continuing intermittently through the morning.

	•	Pavement temperatures are expected to drop below freezing late Monday, creating the potential for slick surfaces, especially on untreated roads.

	•	Snowfall is expected to become more widespread before dawn Tuesday, accumulating throughout the day.

	•	Road surfaces are likely to remain at or below freezing through Wednesday, potentially making the morning commute hazardous.

Officials urge drivers to maintain a safe distance when approaching city salt trucks, as close driving can create additional safety concerns for operators and other motorists.

City of Salina preparing for winter weather

A Salina man was arrested Friday after allegedly harassing students at Kansas Wesleyan University (KWU) and making comments that raised concerns about campus safety, including the safety of the Night to <a href="https://timtebowfoundation.org/night-to-shine/">Shine</a> dance, which was subsequently canceled.

According to Salina Police Captain James Feldman, officers were dispatched to KWU, 100 E. Claflin, around 11 a.m. on Feb. 7, following reports of a man making students feel uncomfortable. KWU security officials identified the suspect as Jonathan Deacon, 35, of Salina.&nbsp;

"Campus security escorted him off the property. While doing so, Deacon allegedly made comments about the security of the school," Feldman said.&nbsp;

A 22-year-old student later reported that Deacon had yelled at him not to attend campus that evening for the dance and stated that he would be back. The student's concerns prompted further investigation and cancellation of the event, according to a email message sent by KWU to the campus community. The email stated, “Local law enforcement is aware of the situation and will be attempting to arrest this individual in the coming hours.&nbsp;With the cancellation, there is no reason to suspect danger to campus, but out of (once again) caution, we will have additional security present and regularly patrolling this evening.”

While officers investigated the KWU incident, SPD was called to the VFW, 1108 W. Crawford, regarding a man acting strange. Officers arrived and identified the man as Deacon. SPD officers arrested him at noon and took him into custody with the requested charge of criminal threat.&nbsp; According to Feldman,&nbsp;Deacon is not a student at KWU.&nbsp; KWU Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Brad Salois said the incident was related to an “outside event on campus.”

Salois did not offer additional comments. Salina Post obtained the KWU email, signed by Salois, from an event volunteer.

According to the Tim Tebow Foundation’s Night to Shine <a href="https://timtebowfoundation.org/night-to-shine/">Website</a>, “ A Night to Shine is a complimentary event for people with special needs hosted by local churches around the world. The 2025 Souper Bowl of Hope volunteers collected 8,276 cans of soup and $4,968.60 in cash donations at Dillon’s stores. While the event has not yet reached its goal of 59,000 cans, organizers remain optimistic that additional donations will continue to come in over the next few weeks.

In addition to donations collected at Dillon’s, several local businesses dropped off their contributions at the Souper Bowl of Hope warehouse, 319 S. 5th Street on Saturday, reducing the number of pickups required for board members.&nbsp;

For those who still have product donations, items can be delivered to the Souper Bowl of Hope warehouse at 319 S. 5th Street (formerly the Consolidated Printing Building). A board member will be available this week from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to receive donations.

To make the drop-off process smoother, organizers request that donations be:

Salina City Commission considers construction bid for new public dog park

TOPEKA, Kan. - The state is preparing for the worst as this week’s back-to-back winter storms could cover the state with snow, making travel treacherous and causing power outages.

With a pair of winter storms expected this week with the first arriving tonight into tomorrow and the second storm to pass through Wednesday into Thursday.

Over the weekend Governor Laura Kelly verbally declared a disaster emergency. This declaration will allow for the use of resources to provide state assistance.

“Kansans have faced challenges due to winter storms this year,” Kelly said in a statement. “The key to meeting those challenges is to be prepared. As i did during past storms, i urge all Kansans to take measures to make sure their families are ready by making a home emergency kit and emergency plan.”

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management recommends that residents be prepared with home emergency kits, including a battery-operated radio, flashlight and batteries, extra blankets and warm clothing, nonperishable food, high-energy snacks, and drinking water, at least one gallon per person per day, for a minimum of three days.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Feb. 10

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) announces it has selected the Live Well Saline County Coalition, along with 18 other communities, as grantees for its third phase of the Pathways to a Healthy Kansas (Pathways) initiative. BCBSKS will be partnering with these community coalitions to improve healthy eating, active living, commercial tobacco prevention, and mental health.

Tammy Walker Cancer Center was selected as the fiscal agent for the two-year Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant, and Daniel Craig, Cancer Outreach Coordinator at Tammy Walker Cancer Center, who served as the lead grant writer, will be the project manager.

Since the Pathways initiative began in 2016, BCBSKS has facilitated 748 grants and projects in communities throughout Kansas, including Live Well Saline County in Saline County. The Pathways program was created to inspire long-lasting, community-wide health and well-being in communities across Kansas.

“We’ve seen the commitment from Live Well Saline County and know they are ready to continue the work to improve the health and well-being of the communities they serve,” said Matt All, President/CEO of BCBSKS. “For more than 80 years, we have been dedicated to helping not only our members but all Kansans live better, healthier lives. Through our Pathways initiative, we are helping remove barriers to accessing healthy foods, increasing physical activity, preventing commercial tobacco use, and improving mental health. We are thrilled to continue this program with our new and returning Pathways grantees and can’t wait to see the difference they make in their communities.”

Each Pathways community will receive coordination assistance from BCBSKS to get started. Additionally, organizations within Saline County will have the opportunity to apply for non-competitive implementation grants to fund projects that will help reach the Live Well Saline County goals for the initiative.

During the previous four-year Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant (2020-2024), Saline County invested $245,288 in noncompetitive implementation grant dollars through three grant projects to increase accessibility and safety for the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank.

	•	The&nbsp;Placemaking grantwas utilized to develop a site plan and install four solar lights.

	•	The&nbsp;Trail Infrastructure grantwas utilized to support construction of a sidewalk between the Salina Emergency Aid Food Bank, the Broadway business corridor, and the South Street neighborhood, including links to OCCK bus stops.

	•	The&nbsp;Safe Routes to Food grantwas utilized to expand the parking lot by adding 12 additional parking stalls and six bike racks.

A community celebration event was held in January to celebrate the completion of these three projects.

“The Pathways initiative has provided our community with the tools and resources needed to take our work to the next level,” said Daniel Craig. “Through a Chronic Disease Risk Reduction grant from the Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment, the Live Well Saline County Coalition was able to go through a strategic planning process, which has enabled us to increase our focus areas to include mental health, engage new members, and expand our ability to bring grant dollars into Saline County. We are looking forward to partnering with other organizations on these two grant initiatives to help make Saline County a healthier place for all.”

The Pathways initiative combines community-wide, evidence-based solutions and practices to help Kansas communities improve active living, healthy eating, behavioral health, and commercial tobacco prevention. It is structured around five pathways that require collaboration across a community. These pathways include economic stability, education access and quality, health care access and quality, neighborhoods and built environment, and social and community context.

Live Well Saline County receives two-year $100,000 grant from BCBSKS

Staying active is one of the best things you can do for your overall health, but finding the motivation and time can be challenging. If you’re looking for a fun and achievable way to increase your physical activity,&nbsp;Walk Kansas&nbsp;might be just what you need. This statewide program encourages team-based movement and provides the accountability and encouragement to help you meet national&nbsp;Physical Activity Guidelines&nbsp;and improve your well-being.

Understanding the Physical Activity Guidelines

The&nbsp;Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans&nbsp;from the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, recommend that adults aim for&nbsp;150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. Additionally, it’s important to include&nbsp;muscle-strengthening activities at least two days per week. Following these guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases, improve mental health, and enhance overall quality of life. What Does Moderate-Intensity Look Like?

Moderate-intensity physical activity means getting your heart rate up and breaking a sweat, but still being able to carry on a conversation. Examples include:

• Active household chores, like vacuuming or mopping

If you’re not sure whether you’re reaching a moderate level, try the&nbsp;talk test—if you can talk but not sing while being active, you’re in the right range!

The Importance of Strength Training

In addition to aerobic activity, adults should engage in&nbsp;muscle-strengthening activities at least two days per week. Strength training is crucial for maintaining muscle mass, improving bone density, and reducing the risk of injury. Some effective options include:

• Bodyweight exercises (push-ups, squats, lunges)

• Lifting weights or using resistance bands
