On Tuesday, September 16,&nbsp;6:30 pm at Knight of Columbus (115 N. 10th), 9 City Commission candidates are expected to be attendance. Those candidates are:

Johnnie Keller, Commissioner Dr. Trent Davis, Keith Cooper, John Price, Dean Klenda, Randall Hardy, Mayor Greg Lenkiewicz, Commissioner Bill Longbine and Doug Rempp.

Four school board candidates for USD 305 are expected to be attendance. Those candidates are:

Bonnie Schamberger, Gabe Grant, Amy Freelove and Dana Johnson.

This event is free and open to the public.

Saline County deputies arrested two suspects after scamming a couple to lose over $120,000.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office, on July 29, 2025 an elderly couple was called by a scammer claiming to be an 'agent from the US Treasurer's Office.' The scammer advised the couple that their 'personal information was used to get $3.7 million in cash from various banks.'

Furthermore, the 'agent' told the couple they were 'laundering money' and that they needed to give the 'US Government $80,000 to cover the court cases, which would be refunded after court dismissal.' Afterwards, one from the couple went to their bank and withdrew $80,000 and sent the amount in two separate shipments to two addresses in&nbsp;Downey, CA.

Moreover, on August 31st, 2025 the same 'agent' called the couple again and advised them to send an additional $40,000 in cash, but this time to a certain individual in person. The scammer told the couple this person would come by their house and pick up the cash. According to the Sheriff's Office, the couple met a male suspect at a street by their house to give him a total of $46,461 in cash.

After these events, the couple's bank was suspicious and called a family member of the couple about the concern. The family member then contacted the Sheriff's Office.

The very next day, the scammer called the couple once more and requested an additional payment of $40,000 in cash. The scammer said the same suspect would meet them to pick up the cash.

The Sheriff's Office was already involved in the investigation when the call was made, and learned the suspect would be at the 2300 block of S. 9th to pick up the cash. When the couple went to meet the suspect, authorities arrived to the scene with them and found two male suspects.

Arrested was 27-year old, Naga Teegala (Aurora, Illinois) and 27-year old, Pruthwik Gallipally (Wheeling, Illinois). Both were booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges:

Criminal Threat, Mistreatment of a Dependent Adult, Theft by Deception, Aggravated Intimidation of a Witness and False Impersonation.

The Sheriff's Office is reminding the community that a US Government agency will never request for cash by mail, wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or other non-traceable methods and is a scam. Saline County deputies arrested a man on various requested charges of burglary, he allegedly committed at two different businesses.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office in the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 10, deputies were dispatched to McElderry Automotive (1912 W. Old 40 Highway) for a security alarm that was sounding off at the business.

When deputies arrived to the scene, it was determined there was evidence of damage on some vehicles at the business. Deputies did not find a suspect and left the scene.

However, at around 7:50 am that same day, an employee opening the business found a man 'possibly asleep inside one of the vehicles' owned by McElderry. Authorities then went back to the business and found a man walking around the area.&nbsp;

Authorities were able to arrest the man identified as 44-year old, Brent Corwin. After he was taken into custody, deputies learned Corwin had allegedly broke into 4 vehicles (damaging 2) and the building at McElderry.

Furthermore, Corwin had a warrant for his arrest out of Marion County and reportedly attempted to break into the business of Central States Enterprises (1908 W. Old 40 Highway), along with a vehicle on their property.&nbsp;

During the investigation, deputies were led to believe Corwin was responsible for the crimes at&nbsp;Central States Enterprises. He was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges:

Outstanding Warrant (Marion Co.), Burglary, 5 charges of Vehicle Burglary, 2 charges of Criminal Damage to Property and Attempted Burglary.

The Sheriff's Office also stated they recovered a high in value mountain bike that Corwin had. Deputies believe this bike was 'stolen' and is advising anyone who maybe missing this type of bike to contact the Sheriff's Office at&nbsp;(785) 826-6500.

Two business burglaries result in suspect facing various requested charges

Kansas Wesleyan ensembles will celebrate special occasions with live music this fall semester.

All the ensembles and groups will perform in a collage concert at 7:00 pm Friday, September 26 in Sams Chapel as part of Family Weekend, which will be Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27.

The Philharmonic Choir will help the Salina Symphony celebrate outer space with “Beyond the Planets” at 4:00 pm Sunday, October 5 at the Stiefel Theatre in downtown Salina. The choir also will offer its fall concert at 7:00 pm Friday, October 30 in Sams Chapel, and various KWU groups will take part in “Music &amp; Motors,” a special, ticketed event at The Garage Automotive Museum on Thursday, October 16.&nbsp;

The ensembles will take part in Homecoming, Oct. 23-26, with a collage concert at 1 p.m. Oct. 25 in Sams Chapel. Included with that concert will be the KWU Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

November will see a three-day block of concerts, with a Percussion Ensemble concert on Nov. 19, Jazz and Wind ensembles performing on Nov. 20, and guest percussion artist Dr. Caitlin Jones on Nov. 21. All three will start at 7 p.m. in Sams Chapel.

December celebrations will kick off with the String Orchestra and Percussion and Wind ensembles offering a concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 in Sams Chapel. Then the Christmas events kick into high gear with KWU’s traditional “Christmas by Candlelight” at 6 p.m. Dec. 7 in Sams Chapel.

The Wesleyan Chorale will make a joyful noise with the Salina Symphony’s Christmas Festival at 7 p.m. Dec. 13 and 4 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Stiefel Theatre.

WHAT TAX CHANGES ARE IN THE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL?

The One Big Beautiful Bill, signed into law on July 4, 2025, brings with it a sweeping package of tax changes and budget measures that will have a broad impact on individuals, families and businesses. The legislation makes permanent several provisions from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), while introducing new incentives for workers and business owners.

Bigger Tax Incentives for Investment and Expansion

The bill introduces or expands several provisions aimed at encouraging capital investment, manufacturing and innovation:&nbsp;

100% Bonus Depreciation Made Permanent. Now retroactive to qualifying property purchased or placed in service on or after Jan. 19, 2025. Section 179 Expensing Limit Increased. Businesses can now deduct up to $2.5 million in qualifying property (up from $1.16 million limit 2023 level). The deduction begins to phase out at $4 million in asset cost. The Kansas State Fair has announced a schedule change for tonight’s Josiah Queen with Ben Fuller concert at the Nex-Tech Grandstand. The show, originally set for 7:30 p.m., will now begin at 6:30 p.m. Gates will open at 5:00 p.m.

Current ticketholders do not need to take any action—tickets remain valid for the adjusted time. Those still looking to attend can purchase tickets at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.etix.com/ticket/v/12251/kansas-state-fair">etix.com</a>.

Designed for jobseekers who can’t attend job fairs during the standard work week, this event will run from 8:00 am Friday, September 26&nbsp;until 5:00 pm Sunday, September 28.

“In this new era of Kansas economic growth, we have experienced a dramatic increase in career opportunities across a broad array of industries,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “There are positions available for everyone — in any stage of life and all levels of experience. The timing is right for jobseekers to write their own new chapter in Kansas.”

This month’s Virtual Statewide Job Fair portal features helpful information such as a jobseeker training video, a list of participating employers, and channels for attendees to register and log in. Jobseekers are encouraged to dress professionally, as they might be asked to engage in an interview.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has begun dirt work in the first phase of reconstruction and realignment of K-4 in Saline County.

The multi-phase project covers about 7 miles of K-4 from the Smoky Hill River bridge to just east of S Kipp Road.

During this first phase of construction, traffic will be minimally impacted with the occasional shoulder closure for grading and drainage structure work off the highway.

Sporer Land Development Inc., of Oakley is the primary contractor for this $23.9 million project and has scheduled the entire project to be completed in Fall 2027.

KDOT urges all motorists to stay alert and follow all posted signs when approaching and driving through a work zone. Saline County Jail Bookings, September 10

CLAY COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 1p.m. Tuesday in Clay County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2015 Freightliner semi driven by Dillon Ray&nbsp;Williams, 18, Clay Center, was&nbsp;westbound on Kansas 9 two miles east of Clifton. The vehicle drifted into the north ditch. The driver overcorrected and the semi entered the south ditch and struck an embankment.

EMS transported Williams and a passenger James Dean&nbsp;Jensen, 55, Morganville, to the Clay County Medical Center. Both were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

SALINE COUNTY —Law enforcement and school district officials in&nbsp; Salina are investigating a teacher on felony allegations.

Over the weekend, a parent of a 16-year-old boy, reported to the Salina Police Department suspicious text messaging between the teen and a teacher at South Middle School, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman.

Police conducted an investigation with the cooperation of USD 305 and determined the teacher, 47-year-old Amanda Freeman, had furnished the juvenile, and possibly other juveniles, with alcohol and THC products. 

Just after 3p.m. Tuesday, Freeman was arrested and booked into the Saline County Jail on requested charges of Felony Contributing to a Child’s Misconduct, Aggravated Endangerment of a Child, Distribution of Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Unlawful Social Hosting and Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor, according to Feldman.

As the removal process for the 'log jam' along the Smoky Hill River near Bill Burke and Indian Rock Park continues, heavy rainfall from this week's storms have increased water flow.

With Saline County currently under a <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/47201a02-c69f-4e88-821f-1249ddac25e2">flood warning</a>&nbsp;until Wednesday, the Saline County Emergency Management team stated heavy rainfall of up to 12 inches has caused widespread flooding across the western half of the county. This has also also caused rising river levels that are expected to continue through Wednesday.

Here is a list of current river conditions for the Smoky Hill River as of Tuesday morning:

According to Utilities Director for the City of Salina Martha Tasker, the rainfall from the rivers (listed above) have come through the log jam near Bill Burke and Indian Rock Parks. She added that a projection of water flow rate is expected to be peaked by 1:00 pm on Wednesday.

Tasker stated the Cubic Feet per Second (water flow rate) right now is 3,290 cfs and is anticipated to rise up to 4,050 cfs by tomorrow (unofficial). This would make the water levels rise up by a couple feet of where it is currently at.

🎥 Saline County storms increase water flow along Smoky Hill River's "log jam"

CLOUD COUNTY —Law enforcement are investigating a suspect for a violent knife attack in north central Kansas.

Just before 9:30p.m. Monday, police were dispatched to the 200 Block of West 11th Street in Concordia after a report of a victim with a stab wound, according to a media release from Concordia Police Chief Brent Gering.

First responders located a victim with a life-threatening stab wound and multiple defensive wounds. The Concordia Fire Department rendered aid to the victim and transported the victim to North Central Kansas Medical Center. The victim was later transferred to Salina Regional Health Center.

Officers located the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Martin Santos Ambros. Officers placed him in handcuffs. He then attempted to escape custody and was unsuccessful.&nbsp; The scene was secured and evidence collected. Santos-Ambros is being held in the Cloud County Jail on requested charges of attempted-murder in the 2nd degree-domestic and Felony interference with law enforcement.

Knife attack victim hospitalized in Salina, suspect in custody

Despite a rainy start Friday, attendance at the Kansas State Fair surged over the weekend, drawing some of the largest crowds in recent years. Fair officials reported that 102,218 people attended opening weekend, with 43,888 visitors on Saturday alone — just shy of a single-day record.

Organizers noted that new ticket-scanning technology is helping them track attendance more accurately than in years past, when paper tickets were weighed to estimate crowd sizes.

Among the highlights of this year’s fair is the 1861 Club, now in its second year. Built by the Kansas State Fair Foundation, the venue has quickly become a popular year-round event space, hosting weddings, fundraisers, and corporate gatherings. Executive Director James Fisher said the club is already booking events as far ahead as 2027.

The Foundation also brought back a crowd favorite absent since 2019: saltwater taffy. Sold in assorted bags featuring 12 flavors — including buttered popcorn and cinnamon — the Kansas State Fair–branded treat is available at the 1861 Club and at the official merchandise booth.

That booth, located in the Fountain House building, is also seeing record sales this year. A new on-demand shirt printing system allows fairgoers to customize designs, colors, and sizes, with plans to fully renovate the space into a retail-style store by next year.

Fair officials say improvements across the fairgrounds, including new asphalt, upgraded lighting, and enhanced sound systems, have drawn praise from visitors — even those traveling cross-country to experience multiple state fairs.

“The fairgrounds look great, and the energy this weekend showed that,” Fisher said. “It’s exciting to be part of something that adds so much value to the community.”

 </figure>MARC JACOBSHutch PostDespite a rainy start Friday, attendance at the Kansas State Fair surged over the weekend, drawing some of the largest crowds in recent years. Fair officials reported that 102,218 people attended opening weekend, with 43,888 visitors on Saturday alone — just shy of a single-day record.Organizers noted that new ticket-scanning technology is helping them track attendance more accurately than in years past, when paper tickets were weighed to estimate crowd sizes.Among the highlights of this year’s fair is the 1861 Club, now in its second year. Built by the Kansas State Fair Foundation, the venue has quickly become a popular year-round event space, hosting weddings, fundraisers, and corporate gatherings. Executive Director James Fisher said the club is already booking events as far ahead as 2027.The Foundation also brought back a crowd favorite absent since 2019: saltwater taffy. Sold in assorted bags featuring 12 flavors — including buttered popcorn and cinnamon — the Kansas State Fair–branded treat is available at the 1861 Club and at the official merchandise booth.That booth, located in the Fountain House building, is also seeing record sales this year. Kansas State Fair sees strong opening weekend

The Central Mall on S. 9th in Salina, is potentially looking to be completely converted into an estimated $146 million project.

After the Salina Commission meeting on Monday, September 8 developer of the potential project, Rick Warner presented to Commissioners a $146 million project called "Destination Salina" that would renovate the entire Central Mall property. 

According to Warner, Destination Salina (if approved) would renovate the current AMC theater into a "state of the art" space, build a 60,000 sq. foot convention center with a hotel that would take place the JCPenney store, install a 'Top-Golf type facility' (not guaranteed) and a family entertainment district.

Before this project moves forward, the City would need to apply for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kansascommerce.gov/program/community-programs/star-bonds/">STAR Bonds</a>&nbsp;with the Kansas Department of Commerce (KDOC).

STAR Bonds stands for "Sales Tax and Revenue Bonds" that is a financing tool, allowing Kansas municipalities to issue bonds to finance the development of major commercial, entertainment and tourism projects. The bonds are paid off through the sales tax revenue generated by the development.

In this case, Salina.If STAR Bonds were to get approved by the KDOC, City Manager Jacob Wood explained the State would also need to approve the dollar amount of how much incentive(s) they would allow from STAR Bonds to be put into Destination Salina. Furthermore, Wood said the City would then need to conduct a public hearing and pass an ordinance that would create the district for it (designating a specific geographic area for a major entertainment or tourism-related development project).Afterwards, the City would need to create a development agreement and work on details with additional incentives such as the Community Improvement District, Tax Increment Financing, Transient Guest Tax and Sales Tax Exemption on Construction Materials.Commissioner Mike Hoppock clarified that this project will 'not risk any general local tax dollars.'Mayor Greg Lenkiewicz commented on 'capitalizing' the Destination Salina project."The choice to either let the Central Mall run its course, which is obviously not a great one, and we have the opportunity to revitalize the area...We capitalize on it," he said."We either have to try and move forward with a plan like this, or we just allow the property to sit there," added Hoppock. "In 5 years, we could look like the mall in Topeka that has already been torn down.""I know 20-30 year olds with something as simple as going to a movie theater, they are leaving Salina to go to Wichita or Manhattan for a better movie experience," said Commissioner Jerry Ivey. "I can easily see this bringing in more people to town."Hoppock also said the City is 'not trying to compete' with the current activity in downtown, but believes in 'taking care' of the Central Mall area."We have the ability to sustain both," he said.According to Wood, the next steps for Destination Salina would be to conduct a public hearing for STAR Bonds, which is anticipated to possibly take place in 30-45 days.
