A man who has been traveling across the country to acquire signatures for an iconic movie prop, is planning to stop in Salina to receive the last one from a well-renowned celebrity.

John Miller, acquired the original canoe of the very first “Friday the 13th” movie and has been traveling across the country to get signatures from all who have been apart of the iconic horror franchise.

Miller is planning on making a stop in Salina on Sunday, October 25 to get his last signature from Kevin Bacon, during "The Bacon Brothers" concert at the Stiefel Theatre. Bacon played as "Jack Burrell" in the 1980 film.

According to Miller, this canoe has the most signatures with 80 plus, than any other Friday the 13th movie prop in history. He has acquired other signatures from celebrities such as Robert Englund, Alice Cooper, Crispin Glover, all the actors who played Jason Voorhees and Corey Feldman.&nbsp;

Miller started this journey 5 years ago. As time progressed, he stated that he “put it in his will" to donate back to the original campsite of where the first movie of the franchise was filmed.

“Everytime a Friday the 13th person pops up that I don’t have, I go and get them,” said Miller. “It is very well known in the convention circuit, very well known around the country to Friday the 13th collectors, there has been YouTube videos done on it. It is a pretty big thing.”

He got the canoe by acquiring it from a junkyard in Iowa, after visiting the original Boy Scout camp in New Jersey, where the movie was filmed. He contacted the Boy Scout camp in Iowa to get the canoe.

When he arrived to Iowa, he was looking for a canoe that had the “#6.” He found it and officially acquired the original canoe of the first movie.

“We have had offers from people that were in Friday the 13th to buy this canoe, but I just can’t sell it, I can’t do it,” Miller said.

Miller added, he received an offer of $100,000, but declined.

Not only does he have the original canoe, but he also has collections like the “Nightmare on Elm Street” motorcycle and gas cans from the films. In his spare time outside of his fulltime job of being a social worker, he collects items from Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street.

Once Miller arrives to Salina, he invites all Friday the 13th fans to check out the canoe.&nbsp;

The Salina Police Department are currently seeking tips for a high in value Camaro that was reportedly stolen from the Long McArthur Ford dealership.

On Sunday, September 28, between 10:50 pm and 11:00 pm, an unknown suspect stole a red 2013 Chevrolet Camaro from the car lot of Long McArthur Ford (3450 S. 9th). 

The vehicle had an unknown dealer tag on at the time of the theft. There were no missing keys to the vehicle. 

The suspect may have been dropped off across the street from the business by a suspect driving a pick-up truck.

The vehicle left south on 9th street from the business. The vehicle has a 6.2L V8 Supercharged engine with a 6-speed manual transmission and is valued at $44,900.

Hello, I’m Greg Lenkiewicz. Thank you for your time and for allowing me the opportunity to share a bit about my background and experience. I am in the final year of my four-year term and currently have the privilege of serving as the Mayor of Salina. I am running for re-election to continue the work that was started in my first term.&nbsp;

I was born in 1972 and raised in Salina. I have also raised both of my children, Sam and Sophie, in this community. I attended school in the USD 305 District and Salina Catholic Schools, completing kindergarten through sixth grade at St. Mary’s. I graduated from Salina South High School in 1991. I then attended Washburn University and graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. I chose that course of study because of my desire to serve the public and make a positive difference.&nbsp;

After graduation, I worked security at the Kansas State Capitol under the Capitol Area Police and also as an armored truck driver in the Topeka area for PSI Armored. My career in law enforcement began several months later at the Kansas State University Police Department (KSUPD), where I primarily served on bike patrol. After a brief period with KSUPD in Manhattan, I moved to the Kansas City area to work in Johnson County, serving as a law enforcement officer for approximately four years—most of that time with the Merriam Police Department.&nbsp;

About a year after my son, Sam, was born, we moved back to Salina to be closer to family. I’ve lived in Salina since the late summer of 2000. Upon returning, I worked for a little over a year with the Salina Police Department before transitioning to the private sector as a property manager and real estate investor to help grow our family business, Lenkiewicz Rental Properties. A few years later, Lenkiewicz Property Management was established. I found the traditional work schedule far more conducive to raising a family, and helping expand our family’s business proved very fulfilling. Lenkiewicz Rentals tripled in size within just a few years. I have been fortunate to continue in that field and have been involved in investment real estate for nearly 25 years.&nbsp;

My interest in local politics began about ten years ago when I realized the public service component in my life was missing and wanted to find a way to contribute to the community once again. That opportunity came when I was appointed to the City of&nbsp;Salina’s Planning Commission, where I served for approximately five years before being elected to the City Commission in 2021.&nbsp;

During my four-year term as a City Commissioner, I have had the privilege of participating in numerous programs and projects that have supported continued development and economic growth in Salina. I am running for re-election with the goal of continuing that progress. I was motivated to run for office again because I found my time on both the Planning Commission and City Commission to be extremely rewarding, and I want to continue serving the people of Salina in that capacity. 

In my opinion, the most important issues currently facing the Salina community are: 

• Workforce development and recruitment&nbsp;• Challenges in providing services and support for our homeless population • Local economic development&nbsp;

Throughout my time on the Commission, I’ve found that we have excellent community partners who do an exemplary job collaborating with our governing body. The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and the Salina Area Economic Development Organization (EDO) work closely with the City of Salina to proactively address workforce development and economic growth. These partnerships should continue and expand in the future.&nbsp;

Salina Grace and its partners are also doing commendable work serving our homeless population. For approximately two years, the City’s Community Relations Department has collaborated with Salina Grace, and the City of Salina has contributed financially—with Commission approval—to support their continued efforts. I believe that partnership should continue, with an emphasis on serving an even broader group of individuals, including those struggling with addiction and/or mental health issues.&nbsp;

As an elected official, I have always made an effort to view every issue through a nonpartisan and non-denominational lens. I believe all citizens are best served from that perspective, and that approach will not change if I am elected to another term.&nbsp;

Through my academic, professional, and public service experiences, I have had the opportunity to work with people from a wide variety of cultural, religious, and economic backgrounds. From my time in law enforcement to property management and now the City Commission, these experiences have greatly enhanced my ability to view issues objectively and serve the community with fairness and integrity.&nbsp;

I’m also pleased to report that the City of Salina, as a taxing entity, has been revenue neutral for both the 2025 and upcoming 2026 fiscal years. As a result, the mill levy is down 0.849 from 2025. 

Despite maintaining a revenue-neutral rate, the City of Salina remains fiscally strong, with a healthy fund balance supported by sound investments and strategic management.

Over the last four years, the Commission has proudly supported incremental and systematic improvements in infrastructure and public safety. My intent is to carry those ideals forward into my second term as a City Commissioner.&nbsp;

Brennan Mills is not just a second-year graduate student pursuing his master’s in English online; he is a rising star in the Kansas City educational community. Brennan is currently teaching middle school English at Indian Woods Middle School in the Shawnee Mission School District, where he has made an indelible mark on his students and peers alike.

Having completed his undergraduate degree in May of 2022, he immersed himself in the joys of teaching. Brennan quickly fell in love with his role as an educator. “After the first week, I knew I was in the right spot. I had a great first year, and I was folded into a band of experienced teachers who were outstanding at their jobs,” he recalls. 

That first year was not just about teaching; it was a foundation built on collaboration. His passionate approach to English Education was quickly recognized, and his school nominated Brennan for the prestigious Kansas Horizon Award. This award recognizes promising first-year educators across the state, providing them with a platform to shine.

Brennan's thoughtful and innovative methodologies caught the eye of his principal, Lacy Warren, who praised him for his commitment to fostering connections with students and their families. His weekly communication with parents ensures they stay informed about their children's progress and learning, bridging the gap between home and school. “Mr. Mills goes above and beyond to communicate with families,” said Principal Warren. For Brennan, teaching is more than a job; it's about respect, understanding, and building a strong foundation for each student.

Following the recognition by his district, Brennan's accolades continued to grow. He triumphantly advanced through the congressional district and state levels, ultimately being celebrated at the Kansas Exemplary Educators Network (KEEN) conference. Reflecting on his accomplishments, he shares humbly, “Award or no award, I would have kept doing exactly what I did, but it’s nice to be recognized.”

Brennan’s dedication to education didn’t stem solely from his classroom experiences; it also flourished from his adventures abroad. During the summer of 2025, he embarked on a transformative journey to Alnwick Castle in England as part of a study abroad program.

FHSU Alnwick is a 3-week, on-site, short-term faculty-led study abroad program located at Alnwick Castle in Alnwick, England, Northumberland. Open to all FHSU undergraduate and graduate students with any major, the program includes a 4-week online summer course with the latter 3 weeks taught onsite at Alnwick Castle.

Home to the 12th Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, Alnwick Castle is steeped in history and significance. Built after the Norman conquest, the castle has undergone extensive renovations to accommodate educational residency programs while preserving its historical integrity. 

Renowned for its appearances in beloved films such as Harry Potter, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Transformers: The Last Knight, the castle also offers visitors a chance to engage in activities like medieval craft demonstrations, Harry Potter broomstick flying lessons, and archery lessons.

Encouraged by FHSU professor Dr. Perry Harrison, Brennan enrolled in two memorable courses: “Outlaws through the Ages” and a travel writing course led by Lisa Bell, director of our writing center and instructor of English and Modern Languages. The latter was a significant challenge as he ventured outside his usual writing style. “It was a refreshing challenge and an informative dive into a new genre,” he remarked. 

Alongside his wife, Brennan spent three weeks exploring the depths of English culture and heritage, traveling from the historic Stonehenge to the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland.

As he balances his responsibilities as a full-time educator and a student, Brennan appreciates the support from Fort Hays State University. He focuses on old British literature and has taken several courses with Perry Harrison. He has also enjoyed his courses with Dr. Leuschner and Lisa Bell. “It has been rigorous but also par for the course. Having a full-time job, teaching from 8 to 4, and then coming home and working on graduate coursework. The professors have been super accommodating.”

His students are fortunate to have a dedicated teacher who enjoys engaging in discussions. Brennan introduces “Philosophy Fridays” in his 8th-grade English class, where students tackle big ideas through the lens of classical philosophers like Plato. “It’s a highlight of my week. It’s a way to engage with students on a deeper level,” he explains. He believes that middle schoolers possess incredible potential and curiosity, making them uniquely suited for exploring life’s profound questions.

Brennan Mills stands out as a dedicated educator and an inspirational figure for future teachers. With aspirations to continue teaching middle school English, he emphasizes the importance of the journey. “They are on the brink of everything, and the possibilities are limitless,” he says about his students. As he forges ahead in his career and studies, this remarkable educator's future clearly holds great promise.

Embarking on this exciting chapter of his life, Brennan Mills remains deeply committed to shaping the minds of his students and influencing the future of education. Understanding educators' pivotal role in igniting curiosity and building resilience, he states, “I hope to inspire future teachers to embrace their unique voices and foster environments where students feel safe to explore their potential. Meet City Commission Candidate: Keith Cooper

Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Kansas Department of Agriculture

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) are alerting the public to the first known occurrence of the Asian longhorned tick (ALHT), Haemaphysalis longicornis, in Kansas. KDHE identified the ALHT after it was found on a dog in Franklin County last week.

ALHT is an exotic, invasive tick species that was first identified in the United States in New Jersey in 2017. Since then, it has spread westward across the U.S. and, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has now been documented in 21 states, with Kansas being the most recent (<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.aphis.usda.gov%2Flivestock-poultry-disease%2Fcattle%2Fticks%2Fasian-longhorned%2Fasian-longhorned-tick-what-you-need-know%3Futm_medium=email%26utm_source=govdelivery/1/01000199cac168d2-511d7d78-8fcf-4926-9f35-8404a784e5a7-000000/n3sreE3O3CqMqPwSQzV0ifE1ZMHF1lXeivAtOq4Z1O0=426">https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/cattle/ticks/asian-longhorned/asian-longhorned-tick-what-you-need-know</a>).

“We have been monitoring the spread of the Asian longhorned tick, especially since it was confirmed in neighboring states,”&nbsp;Animal Health Commissioner Dr. Justin Smith said.&nbsp;“Now that it has been identified in Kansas, we have been in contact with accredited veterinarians across the state to remind them to be alert for this tick and to ensure they understand the risks.”

This prolific tick, which can reproduce without the need for a male tick, has both human and animal health implications. In 2019, an ALHT in Virginia was found to be infected with Bourbon virus, while Connecticut recently identified an ALHT infected with ehrlichiosis, both of which are tick-borne diseases that occur in Kansas but are currently transmitted by the Lone Star tick.

“We’re still learning about this tick and the ecologic role that it currently plays and may play in the future in terms of disease transmission to humans.”&nbsp;Dr. Erin Petro, KDHE State Public Health Veterinarian, said.&nbsp;“While the human health implications are uncertain, this tick has serious implications for animal health.”

The ALHT can cause extreme infestations on affected animals, sometimes leading to severe anemia or even exsanguination. Beyond the physical threat, the ALHT also transmits the cattle parasite&nbsp;Theileria orientalis&nbsp;Ikeda strain, which causes bovine theileriosis.

In 2024, KDHE piloted a program to create a passive tick surveillance network of veterinary clinics throughout the state. 

Through this program, participating clinics submit tick samples from animals in their care to KDHE for identification. This program has been successful in providing information on where various ticks are found across the state and has been especially useful in under-surveyed areas. One of these partners submitted a routine sample which was later identified as ALHT by KDHE and confirmed by the USDA. In both humans and animals, tick bite prevention is key.

To reduce the risk of disease, follow these precautions:

- Be aware of where ticks are found and using preventive measures when in grassy, brushy, or wooded areas.

- Dress preventively by wearing long pants tucked into socks and shirt tucked into pants.

- Treat clothing and gear with permethrin.

- Use an EPA-approved repellent such as DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) when enjoying the outdoors or being in a tick habitat.

- After coming indoors, perform a thorough tick check, being sure to focus on the waistband, under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, back of knees, and in and around the hair.

- Check pets for ticks, especially around the tail, between the back legs, under the front legs, between the toes, in and around the ears, around the eyes, and under the collar.

- Shower soon after being in a tick habitat or engaging in outdoor activities. This will help remove any unattached ticks and identify any attached ticks.

- To remove attached ticks, use a pair of fine-tipped tweezers, grasp the tick near the skin, and apply gentle traction strait outwards until the tick is removed.

- Help prevent tick-borne diseases and tick infestations on pets by consulting with your veterinarian on use of a veterinary-approved flea and tick preventative.

An alleged assault on a woman results in a man facing numerous charges.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office on the early morning hours of Thursday, a 33-year old woman reported she had been assaulted by a 36-year old man identified as, Elier Diaz-Brito.

Reportedly, the woman has a relationship with Diaz-Brito and both were at&nbsp;Shady Lady’s Gentleman Club (1540 West Old 40 Hwy) at about 2:00 am when the assault happened. The victim added Diaz-Brito stole her phone and damaged her vehicle.

Deputies with the assistance of Salina Police, later located and arrested Diaz-Brito. He was booked into the Saline County Jail on the following requested charges:

Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Intimidation of a Witness, Aggravated Domestic Battery, Aggravated Battery, Criminal Damage to Property and Driving without a license

The victim received injuries that did not require immediate medical treatment.

According to the US National Weather Service (Wichita, KS) the severity remains low for these scattered showers and storms throughout the region on Tuesday. However, heavy rainfall amounts and flooding are a possibility.&nbsp;

The US National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita forecasts severe thunderstorms are expected to develop after midnight tonight and continue into Tuesday morning across Central Kansas.

According to NWS Wichita, these storms are likely to produce high rainfall rates, which may lead to flooding. Storms are expected to move in from the west after midnights, with most locations in Saline County after 3:00 am. The heaviest rainfall is likely between 4:00 am and noon Tuesday.

Saline County Emergency Management stated there is slightly lower confidence on how large hailstones may get, but the confidence is in the heavy rainfall and flooding potential has been increasing.

TOPEKA — University of Kansas indigenous studies director Alex Red Corn said a $1.5 million grant would allow a five-year collaboration with tribal nations and school districts in three states to broaden the pipeline of K-12 teachers working in schools serving Native American students.

The difficulty of attracting and retaining teachers to serve Native American students has been fueled from insufficient funding, isolation of rural communities and lack of job-market recruiting.

KU was awarded the grant from the Office of Indian Education in the U.S. Department of Education. The program involves&nbsp;the Southern Plains American Indian Teaching Pathways Project, which is a partnership that included Haskell Indian Nations University, or HINU, in Lawrence.

The goal is to work with Native Nations and school districts in Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma to prepare and mentor 15 teachers in elementary or secondary education.

“We look forward to getting started recruiting folks from Native communities and offer them a funded pathway to full teacher licensure through&nbsp;KU&nbsp;and Haskell and continuing to grow our longstanding partnership with Haskell in new and exciting ways,” said Red Corn, an Osage member, the lead principal investigator on the project and a KU associate professor.

Under the program, researchers plan to recruit individuals who earned or were approaching completion of an associate’s degree and want to pursue teaching certification by earning a bachelor’s degree at HINU or KU.

Upon graduation, these certified teachers would be required to work in Native-serving schools, where they would receive career mentorship from experienced teachers and cultural leaders.

KU officials said students involved in the program would be eligible for financial support in the form of tuition and fees, monthly living stipends, books, laptops and academic conference travel.

“We’re very appreciative of this opportunity from the Office of Indian Education, which is such a critical resource for tribal nations looking to advance sovereignty in education,” Red Corn said.

He said tribe and school partners in the region were eager to participate in work on a sustained program to bolster the teacher-development pipeline.

Project partners on the grant application included HINU, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, Osage Nation, Quapaw Nation, and the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes.

Other partners in the teacher development effort would be&nbsp;Royal Valley Schools and South Brown County Schools as well as Daposka Ahnkodapi (Osage Nation School), Darlington Public Schools, Umoⁿhoⁿ Nation Public School and the Tribal Education Departments National Assembly.&nbsp;

University of Kansas collaborates on $1.5M grant to train teachers for Native-serving schools

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A teen murder suspect, captured on June 17, after hiding from police for weeks will will return to court Friday.

Jaden Watts, 19, is scheduled for an arraignment hearing, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. He may be asked to enter a plea for charges of second-degree murder in the March shooting death of 24-year-old Demarc Burgess.

In August, Judge Tyler Roush rejected a motion from Watt's attorney to dismiss the case because the fatal shooting was in self defense, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.&nbsp; &nbsp;

In March, police issued a felony pick-up for Watts in connection with the shooting of Burgess&nbsp;at a residence in the 14000 block of E. Twinlake Drive in Wichita, according to Officer Juan Reboledo.&nbsp; EMS transported Burgess to a local hospital where he died.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident occurred during a gathering at the residence, where a disturbance broke out between Watts and Burgess, which ultimately led to the shooting.&nbsp; 

Wichita police and U.S. Marshals took Watts into custody June 17 in the area of 700 S Hunter in Wichita, according to a statement from Wichita Police. He remains jailed&nbsp;on bonds totaling over $500,000.

Plea hearing: Kan. murder suspect who hid from police for weeks

OSLO, Norway (AP) — Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, winning recognition as a woman “who keeps the flame of democracy burning amid a growing darkness.”

The former opposition presidential candidate was lauded for being a “key, unifying figure” in the once deeply divided opposition to President Nicolás Maduro’s government, said Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel committee.

“In the past year, Ms. Machado has been forced to live in hiding,” Watne Frydnes said. Despite serious threats against her life, she has remained in the country, a choice that has inspired millions. When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognize courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist.”

He told the AP that the committee was able to reach Machado just before the announcement and “it came as a surprise.”

Machado’s ally, Edmundo González, who lives in exile in Spain, posted a short video of himself speaking by phone with Machado.

“I am in shock,” she said, adding, “I cannot believe it.”

González celebrated Machado’s Nobel win in a post on X, calling it a “very well-deserved recognition for the long fight of a woman and of a whole people for our freedom and democracy.”

Maduro’s government has routinely targeted its real or perceived opponents.

Machado, who turned 58 this week, was set to run against Maduro, but the government disqualified her. González, who had never run for office before, took her place. The lead-up to the election saw widespread repression, including disqualifications, arrests and human rights violations.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/venezuela-election-maduro-opposition-human-rights-abuses-dd6d0b103adbf88f00fe60b0d781a873">crackdown on dissent only increased</a>&nbsp;after the country’s National Electoral Council, which is stacked with Maduro loyalists, declared him the winner despite credible evidence to the contrary.

The election results announced by the Electoral Council sparked protests across the country to which the government responded with force that ended with more than 20 people dead. They also prompted an end to diplomatic relations between Venezuela and various foreign countries, including Argentina.

Machado went into hiding and has not been seen in public since January. A Venezuelan court issued an arrest warrant for González over the publication of election results. He went into exile in Spain and was granted asylum.

Before dawn in Caracas, with few vehicles out yet on the Venezuelan capital’s usually crowded streets, some people heading to work expressed disbelief at the news of Machado’s win.

“I don’t know what can be done to improve the situation, but she deserves it,” said Sandra Martínez, 32, as she waited at a bus stop. “She’s a great woman.”

Support for Machado and the opposition in general has decreased since the July 2024 election — particularly since January, when Maduro was sworn in for a third six-year term and disappointment set in.

Last year, Machado and González were awarded the European Union’s top human rights honor, the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/eu-venezuela-opposition-human-rights-prize-sakharov-47257f5b05716e90c3eabdde3a1f17e6">Sakharov Prize</a>.

Machado becomes the 20th woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, of the 112 individuals who have been honored.

Speculation about Trump’s Nobel chances

There had been persistent speculation ahead of the announcement about the possibility of the prize going to U.S. President&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-misses-out-on-nobel-peace-prize-729973788d8953da9af1cbc136232e96">Donald Trump</a>, fueled in part by the president himself and amplified by this week’s&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-hamas-hostages-trump-peace-plan-e3d0ce091be56cc29207e566ff1603af">approval of his plan</a>&nbsp;for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Asked about lobbying for and by Trump, Watne Frydnes said: “I think this committee has seen any type of campaign, media attention. We receive thousands and thousands of letters every year of people wanting to say what for them leads to peace.

“This committee sits in a room filled with the portraits of all laureates, and that room is filled with both courage and integrity. So we base only our decision on the work and the will of Alfred Nobel.”

White House spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a post on X Friday morning that “President Trump will continue making peace deals around the world, ending wars, and saving lives.” He added that “the Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace.”

Last year’s award went to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/norway-nobel-japan-peace-prize-nuclear-9f39bcd5d6035fb1e75ac2030cf5c009">Nihon Hidankyo</a>, a grassroots movement of Japanese atomic bombing survivors who have worked for decades to maintain a taboo around the use of nuclear weapons.

The peace prize is the only one of the annual&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nobel-prize-announcements-peace-literature-medicine-cd572ef1c31ce39e3fa304468d445443">Nobel prizes</a>&nbsp;to be awarded in Oslo, Norway.

Four of the other prizes have already been awarded in the Swedish capital, Stockholm this week — in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nobel-prize-medicine-a68cf8a3b930570630168a949d277cde">medicine</a>&nbsp;on Monday,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nobel-prize-physics-e74ee2acf652259cf268cc1d48873e14">physics</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nobel-prize-chemistry-87dcb74eb01e3d5ba8efc32832e51ef6">chemistry</a>&nbsp;on Wednesday and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nobel-prize-literature-25f9886d2c35dabfc6ab7936a8a159c0">literature</a>&nbsp;on Thursday. The winner of the prize in economics will be announced on Monday.

Who won? White House responds to Nobel Peace Prize announcement

KANSAS CITY —Law enforcement are investigating another homicide in Kansas City.

Just before 6p.m. Thursday, police o were dispatched to a shooting at a convenience store in the 1300 block of Bannister Road in Kansas City, Missouri, according to KCPD Sergeant Jake Becchina.

On arrival officers were directed to a shooting victim unresponsive on the ground next to the business. Officers rendered aid and called for EMS who responded and declared the man deceased at the scene. Homicide detectives responded to&nbsp; the scene and canvassed for any witnesses. 

Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim had an interaction with an unknown suspect in the parking lot of the business that escalated to gunfire which struck the victim.&nbsp; Police did report the name of the victim or additional details.

Homicide: Man killed in KC convenience store parking lot

DOUGLAS COUNTY —Law enforcement continue to investigate after a concerning social media post involving a weapon at Billy Mills Middle School, 2734 Louisiana Street in Lawrence, according to Lawrence Police.

On Thursday morning, Lawrence police, Douglas County Sheriff deputies and the Kansas Highway Patrol responded and in conjunction with USD 497 officials locked down the school, evacuated students to the football field and worked to ensure no students were hiding in the building. Some students did hide when the school was placed on lockdown, according to police.

All students were required to leave personal items for clearance. Police&nbsp; called in a firearm detection dog to search and did not find a firearm.

Police have identified the circumstances that promoted the response and will complete a thorough investigation.
