The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce visited AJ Honey Honey Farms, LLC, on Friday, April 26, to celebrate a ribbon cutting for joining the chamber and the business's brick-and-mortar location on Ninth Street.

AJ Honey Farms co-owner Allen Stovall told the packed storefront of visitors his and his wife's, co-owner Judy Stovall, journey to opening AJ Honey Farms.

Allen Stovall also shared his passion for helping other beekeepers and spreading awareness and education about the benefits and conservation that stem from beekeeping.

"We always want to see new beekeepers coming in. We're happy to teach it and of course we do not charge to teach something we do because we enjoy helping people learn this trade," Allen Stovall said. "So teaching is a large part of this."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Storm Prediction Center (NOAA SPC) released&nbsp;and&nbsp;updated forecast for Saturday's severe weather risk.

The forecast's summary states, "Severe thunderstorms are likely today and tonight across the southern and central Plains into the lower to mid-Missouri Valley."

It continues, "The most numerous/intense storms are expected from north Texas into Oklahoma and Southeast Kansas, where strong tornadoes, very large hail of 2 to 3 inches in diameter and damaging winds of 60 to 80 mph are all possible."

Further in the update, forecasters state that today's atmosphere sports "chaotic development of discrete supercells," which is fueled by high humidity and unstable conditions in the atmosphere.

Toward the mid-afternoon, forecasters turned their attention to the possibility of a strong line of thunderstorms developing and stretching from southeast Colorado into most of northern Kansas.&nbsp;

Thunderstorms will rumble through the far northeastern parts of Kansas today, with another round of severe weather on the forecast for tomorrow.

Yesterday evening, <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/2da4fb8f-3f17-4c38-80ea-57990a5a74c5">a tornado struck rural Cheyanne County in western Kansas</a> and caused no damage or injuries. Although yesterday had an enhanced risk for cyclonic activity, few supercells spun into large damaging storms.

After thunderstorms rumble through the area on Friday afternoon, Kleinsasser and other meteorologists at NWS Wichita forecast an increased potential for severe weather stretching from Salina to northern Texas on Saturday.

"We've got another potential for&nbsp;some&nbsp;scattered thunderstorms," Kleinsasser said. "Some of those may be severe&nbsp;as well&nbsp;with large hail, damaging winds and possibly some tornadoes as well Saturday afternoon into Saturday night."

Often, severe weather only impacts a small area, so although the forecast spreads across most of Kansas and large areas of the Great Plains, it will likely strike in isolated areas.&nbsp;

Salina has a slight risk for severe weather on Saturday afternoon and evening, which Kleinsasser said residents should prepare for by making a severe weather action plan.

<a href="https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day2otlk.html">The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Storm Prediction Center</a>&nbsp;(NOAA SPC) forecasted a multi-day severe weather outbreak headed for the Great Plains, with pockets of stronger storms possible across central and north-central Kansas through the weekend.

<a href="https://www.weather.gov/ict/">U.S. National Weather Service Wichita</a> (NWS Wichita) Meteorologist Andy Kleinsasser said showers and moderate thunderstorms are on Salina's forecast for this evening into Thursday morning.

Still, stronger weather may follow on Thursday afternoon.

The current forecast shows more significant chances for severe thunderstorms west of Salina and Interstate 135 in the late afternoon and evening. 

However, Kleinsasser said central Kansas still has an increased chance for severe weather.

"Tomorrow evening through Friday morning is&nbsp;what we call&nbsp;more of a conditional threat," Kleinsasser said. "Most of the storms may stay out in western Kansas, but there is a chance after dark we could get a few thunderstorms into the Wichita and Salina areas."&nbsp;

"If we do get those storms, they could be severe, with some large hail and damaging winds, and you can't rule out an isolated tornado as well."

The NOAA SPC forecast shows a hatched area of increased risk, which Kleinsasser said predicts that thunderstorms in that area have an increased risk of developing into concerning supercells.

"Hatched risk is an area that the Storm Prediction Center forecasters are concerned with a chance for higher in severe weather," Kleinsasser said. "When I say higher in severe weather [that means] hail greater than two inches in diameter... it also would include the potential for some strong, violent tornadoes — tornadoes that are EF-2 in intensity and stronger."

The chance for severe weather doesn't end Thursday night, as Friday morning has a lower chance than Thursday, but localized heavy rain and large hail are still possible.

Salina has a slight risk for severe weather on Saturday afternoon and evening, which Kleinsasser said residents should prepare for by making a severe weather action plan.

"People always say, 'It never hits us,' because it's&nbsp;really hard&nbsp;to get hit by a severe thunderstorm because most storms aren't severe. But the few that become severe could be pretty big the next few days," Kleinsasser said.&nbsp;"We recommend that people have a plan, and they&nbsp;communicate that plan with their family, especially if they have young kids."

Kleinsasser&nbsp;said he recommends&nbsp;that residents have multiple ways to receive critical weather information through any device, including television sets, cellphones and battery-powered radios.

In the next few days, much of the forecasted area for predicted severe weather stays along Interstates 135 and 70, which could impact some drivers through the weekend.

Those traveling this weekend along those routes and other major traffic zones should prepare by keeping a radar application or website easily accessible.

"Folks driving need to stay aware where the storms are and use radar apps — phone radar apps are a dime a dozen, and most of them are free," Kleinsasser said. "We encourage people to have a radar app and keep their eyes on the sky. If it looks really bad and dark up ahead, maybe pull over and use that radar app. If there's a big red blob or a warning, don't drive into it — wait it out."

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers arrested a Salina resident early Friday morning after he battered and strangled a Salina woman at their residence.

At about 12:45 a.m., officers arrived at a home in the 800 block of Cherokee after a 63-year-old woman reported her significant other, later identified as 75-year-old Ralph Polly, for allegedly hitting and strangling her.

"[Polly] ended up striking her and grabbing her by the throat, restricting her airway so she could not breathe," said SPD Capt. James Feldman. "When he hit her in the face, [he] knocked her glasses off and attempted to hit her again."

When Polly knocked the victim's glasses off, he did not damage them.

Feldman said officers saw minor injuries on the victim's throat and subsequently arrested Polly for domestic battery and aggravated domestic battery.

SPD arrests Salina resident after victim reports domestic violence

Early this morning, Friday, April 26, a 21-year-old Salina woman died in a single-vehicle crash on Belmont Avenue after striking a curb at high speeds. The vehicle's passenger continues treatment for critical wounds at Salina Regional Health Center.

Salina Police Department (SPD) Sgt. Chad McCary said a Salina resident reported the wreck around 12:36 a.m. near 2242 Mayfair Drive.&nbsp;

When officers arrived, they found a white 2012 Jaguar passenger vehicle with the driver's side of the car smashed into a tree.

"We've surmised from being at the scene that the vehicle was southbound on Belmont&nbsp;—&nbsp;obviously&nbsp;at a high speed," McCary said.&nbsp;"The vehicle tried to negotiate the curve, it couldn't, and struck the west curb and hit an Evergy power pole on the southwest corner of Mayfair and Belmont."

McCary said the impact severed the pole from its base in the ground, requiring Evergy to fix the power pole this morning.

The vehicle rotated and hit the tree after the Jaguar struck the power pole. Once emergency services arrived, they pronounced the 21-year-old driver dead at the scene and found the 22-year-old passenger with serious injuries.

"The front-seat passenger&nbsp;was extricated&nbsp;immediately after EMS got there and&nbsp;was transported&nbsp;to Salina Regional Health Center, where she remains," McCary said. "She's in critical condition."

McCary said he was unsure if the passenger was wearing a seatbelt, but emergency responders found the driver with a seatbelt in place.

SPD officers continue to investigate the crash.

Crash on Belmont Avenue kills driver, leaves passenger in critical condition

Late Wednesday evening, a witness reported a black truck driving on the sidewalk near the East Iron Avenue and North Ohio Street intersection with a woman repeatedly attempting to exit the vehicle.

The witness reported the concerning activity to Salina Police Department (SPD) officers at about 10:30 p.m. on April 24. Officers then reported to the area and found the black truck in the 1100 block of East Iron Avenue.

"Officers&nbsp;got to the area&nbsp;and observed a black truck driving in the area," said SPD Capt.&nbsp;James Feldman. "[Officers] conducted a traffic stop and&nbsp;made contact with&nbsp;the driver."

Officers identified the driver as 43-year-old Salina resident Jeremiah Herwig and a 33-year-old female victim in the passenger seat.

The woman told officers that she and Herwig previously had a relationship and that he repeatedly refused to let her leave the truck after asking multiple times.

"Mr. Herwig picked her up, refused to let her out of the vehicle and ended up throwing water at her," Feldman said. "Every time she attempted to exit the vehicle, he sped up."

The repeated attempts to get away from Herwig led him to park in a Casey's parking lot at 1100 East Iron Avenue.&nbsp;

When she began to exit the vehicle again, Herwig tried to pull away, but she fell out of the truck. She feared Herwig would strike her with the car.

"Out of fear, she&nbsp;ended up getting&nbsp;back into the vehicle," Feldman said. "They began to leave the area when officers located them. When officers quickly determined that the subject could&nbsp;be arrested&nbsp;for crimes, they ordered him out of the truck. He refused to get out, so he was forcibly removed from the truck and then ended up trying to strike an officer with a closed fist."

Feldman said after continued resistance, officers deployed a Taser gun, which brought Herwig to the ground, where he continued to resist.&nbsp;

Officers eventually detained Herwig and requested charges for kidnapping, domestic violence aggravated assault, domestic violence battery, assault of a Law Enforcement Officer and felony obstruction.

Salina resident arrested after battering woman and resisting SPD officers

Just after 3 p.m. yesterday, April 24, two vehicles crashed at the intersection of East Schilling Road and South Ohio Street, with one or more of the vehicle's occupants sustaining minor injuries.

According to Salina Police Department (SPD) Sgt. Matt Gawigh, the crash happened at 3:05 p.m. and caused the airbags to deploy.

"We had some minor injuries involved — however,&nbsp;no one was transported," Gawigh said.&nbsp;

Crash at Schilling and Ohio in Salina causes minor injuries

Saline County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to rural Saline County for a semi-truck and trailer on fire at a local towing company around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23.

According to Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander, Rural Fire District Seven requested traffic control at North Fifth Street and Pleasant Hill Road due to pockets of fire spreading from the semi-truck in and around the 2700 block of North Fifth Street.

"Once it was under control, we were informed that the property was Palmer Towing," Melander said. "Upon examination,&nbsp;it was discovered&nbsp;that a semi-trailer was separate [from the semi-truck], and it&nbsp;was damaged&nbsp;with an estimated $20,000 of damage."

Melander said the fire completely destroyed the semi-truck, causing a loss of $80,000. Palmer Towing owned both the semi-truck and trailer.

A T&amp;R Construction employee reported the fire to authorities after dropping some items off at the next-door company location.

Rural Fire District Seven found no apparent cause of the fire and deemed it non-suspicious. The semi-truck's engine was not running while parked on the property.

Saline County Sheriff's Office aids with non-suspicious rural county fire

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers responded to an early morning food burglary on Monday, April 22, after a man claimed another person's residence and walked away with a plate of food and a television remote.

Just before 7 a.m., SPD Capt. James Feldman said a 61-year-old man returned to his home in the 600 block of Beverly Drive and found the burglar.

"Around 6:40 a.m. that morning, he [the victim] entered his residence and determined that&nbsp;his front door had been forced&nbsp;open," Feldman said. "Upon entering, there was a male, later identified as Marcos Martinez."

Martinez, a 54-year-old Salina resident, caused about $150 in damages to the door. Once the victim confronted him, Martinez claimed that he owned the residence.

Feldman said the victim demanded that Martinez leave, which he initially refused, and so the victim physically pushed him through a door out of the residence.

"Then he [Martinez] reentered the residence through the same door the victim pushed him out of," Feldman said. "The victim forced him out again, and the suspect left. The victim determined that he stole a steak, some white bread, sour cream and chives."

Officers then took his description from the victim and sent it to other officers in the area. They found him walking in the middle of Beverly Drive near the 1500 block of the neighborhood.

"An officer&nbsp;who was&nbsp;responding to the area had the suspect description observed him walking down the middle of the street," Feldman said. "He was walking down the middle of the roadway&nbsp;blocking&nbsp;a school bus from proceeding."

Feldman said the victim confirmed that Martinez was the man who burglarized his apartment, which officers confirmed when they found the victim's television remote with Martinez.

Officers then arrested Martinez and requested charges for burglary, damage to property, theft and battery.

Burglar claims residence as his own, steals food after victim forces him out

An unknown suspect stole various construction tools from a job site in the 2700 block of Rogers Court on Saturday, April 20, and caused hundreds of dollars in damages to a duplex.

Sometime between Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20, an unknown suspect broke into an unfinished duplex in the area and stole more than $850 in tools.

"He noticed at about 8 a.m. on the 20th that someone had gained entry to one of the duplexes he was working on and stole his air compressor, miter saw and framing gun," said Salina Police Department (SPD) Capt. James Feldman. "Then, they had broken into the neighboring duplex — he didn't take anything but caused $500 worth of damage by breaking in."

The total amount lost in the burglary was $860 in tools and $500 in damages. Feldman said SPD officers continue to investigate the burglary.

Tools stolen from duplexes under construction, officers continue investigating

A 23-year-old Salina resident discovered his 2016 Yamaha YZ250F missing from the side of his residence on Saturday, April 20, after another motorcycle theft in town.

Salina Police Department Capt. James Feldman said the unknown suspect stole the motorcycle or dirt bike between Thursday, April 18 and Saturday, April 20.

"The motorcycle was valued at $10,000," Feldman said. "The dirt bike was yellow in color and a 60th Anniversary Edition. It had triple eights on the front and sides of the bike."

SPD officers investigating another motorcycle theft in town

More than 600 runners gathered in downtown Salina on Saturday for the 2024 Love, Chloe Family Fun Run, which offered three different race routes for families and individual runners to enjoy.

Heidi Feyerherm-Smith, the founder and executive director of the Love, Chloe Foundation, said the race had about 540 total entries last year, but the final entries totaled 680 this year.

About 600 entries were in-person runners, while the rest counted as virtual.

The funds raised from the event will go directly toward helping families with children battling cancer — ranging from holiday packages to providing funds for food and gas expenses when traveling to and from cancer treatments.

On Friday last week, just after 1 p.m., Saline County Sheriff's Office deputies stopped and arrested a Culligan employee after multiple witnesses reported a Culligan box truck dragging along a barbed wire fence.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said that just north of the junction of Interstates 135 and 70, the driver, later identified as 35-year-old Salina resident Thomas Norton, reported falling asleep and veering from the roadway.

"The box truck was going southbound, left the highway, went down off and through the interstate fence," Soldan said. "Then we get a second report, a third report that the thing had come back up onto the interstate, back in through a field, and was dragging a chunk of barbed wire fence."

Norton then drove eastbound on Interstate 70 with the portion of the fence, exited the interstate at Ninth Street, and parked at a gas station near Ninth Street and Euclid Avenue.

Once stopped, Soldan said Saline County deputies then began conversations with Norton, who reported he fell asleep, leading him to veer off the highway.

"Thomas [Norton] ended up being arrested for possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, leaving the scene of an accident, improper driving on a laned roadway and no seatbelt," Soldan said. "The fence that was damaged belonged to KDOT [Kansas Department of Transportation]."

Culligan truck destroys fence on I-135, Sheriff's Office arrests driver in town

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers arrested a resident who stopped her vehicle on the runway at Salina Regional Airport on Thursday, April 18.&nbsp;

At about 6:30 a.m., an Airport employee called SPD and reported a silver 2003 Ford F-150 truck stopped on the airstrip after following another employee through a gated area.

"[She] drove in behind it and ended up driving onto the runway," said SPD Capt. James Feldman. "So when officers made contact, they were on the runway."

Feldman said officers spoke with 42-year-old Salina resident Sindee Boumsombath and later arrested her for trespassing and driving with a revoked driver's license.

The incident report did not detail Boumsombath's reasons for entering the restricted areas of the Salina Regional Airport.

SPD officers arrests resident on Salina Regional Airport runway

This week, more than 250 junior and senior high school students descended on the Great Plains Convention Hall, filled with exhibits showcasing a look into construction, manufacturing and service.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://www.salinahba.com/">Salina Area Builders Association</a> (SABA) organized the first Salina Build My Future to introduce various blue-collar careers to students interested in the trades.&nbsp;

For most trade shows, exhibitors typically bring small equipment, pamphlets of information and small take-home items, but the one requirement for exhibitors at this show was interactivity.

"The vendors were creative with what they came up with. I'm so impressed with what they brought," said SABA board member Jessica Kindlesparger. "To me, I think it's eye-opening for them to actually get hands-on experience doing those things that maybe they didn't know they would be interested in."

Kindlesparger said 260 students attended the event, with schools like Concordia High School and Salina South High School bringing large portions of their junior and senior classes.

Although 260 attendees for a first-time event is large, Kindlesparger said she expects attendance to more than double next year after hearing feedback from various schools.

Larkin, Scott City, Holcom and Beloit were a few examples Kindlesparger said showed interest in the event.&nbsp;Some schools told her they&nbsp;intended to bring their entire&nbsp;junior and senior classes next year.

At the <a href="https://www.pestingerheating.com/">Pestinger Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc</a>. booth, Master Electrician Travis Benoist presented simple motors made from copper wire and a battery.&nbsp;

At the same time, Megan Leyler, an electrician for Pestinger, introduced students to the basics of wiring a breaker box.

"Not everybody fits into this box of going to the four-year institution, so having these options anymore is critical," Benoist said. "I push for education with my workers all the time — the more educated they are, the better they understand what&nbsp;they're&nbsp;doing, and then the better they can apply those principles to their jobs."

Brian Thompson, a 17-year-old student at Salina South High School, visited the booth and tried wiring the breaker box, which he said he already had a little bit of experience by working on house construction.

"Most of the things we're doing,&nbsp;I already did a little bit," Thompson said.&nbsp;"A lot of it is kind of new, so I enjoyed it."

Many local Salina businesses and organizations presented exhibits at the event, including <a href="https://www.greatplainsmfg.com/">Great Plains Manufacturing</a>, <a href="https://www.vortex-companies.com/">Vortex</a>, the <a href="https://www.salina-ks.gov/fire-department">Salina Fire Department</a> — complete with a fire engine for students to try out the hoses — and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/PontonConstruction/">Ponton's Construction</a>.

"They [the students] started out a little timid, and now they're really intrigued," Kindlesparger said. "They're all interacting and asking questions and getting involved in all this — it's been really rewarding."

Salina Build My Future sparks interest for junior and senior high school students

Through the average gusty weather of Kansas yesterday, Thursday, April 18, members of the City of Salina Parks and Recreation staff, leaders at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and residents gathered to celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting at Oakdale Park's newest feature — full-size pickleball courts.

Stephanie Gillig, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce events and community coordinator, introduced Jeff Hammond, the director of Salina Parks and Recreation, to present some information on the privately funded courts.

"This project was born from a generous group of individuals who sought to provide pickleball to the community," Hammond said. "Anybody can freely use them and enjoy the sport of pickleball."

The anonymous group of donors provided about $500,000 in funding for the new courts, completely covering the construction cost.&nbsp;

Previously, Hammond said the city did have makeshift pickleball courts, so the new courts at Oakdale Park are an addition to the town.&nbsp;

"We do a lot of public-private partnerships, whether it be the Field House or the tennis complex," Hammond said. "But not to this degree and for this size of project and financial commitment, it was quite extraordinary."

After the ribbon cutting, the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce offered a drawing for free pickleball equipment.&nbsp;

Some attendees began playing on the new courts to celebrate the grand opening.

 </figure>"This project was born from a generous group of individuals who sought to provide pickleball to the community," Hammond said. "Anybody can freely use them and enjoy the sport of pickleball."The anonymous group of donors provided about $500,000 in funding for the new courts, completely covering the construction cost.&nbsp;<figure>

 </figure>Previously, Hammond said the city did have makeshift pickleball courts, so the new courts at Oakdale Park are an addition to the town.&nbsp;"We do a lot of public-private partnerships, whether it be the Field House or the tennis complex," Hammond said. "But not to this degree and for this size of project and financial commitment, it was quite extraordinary."<figure>

Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and City of Salina celebrate grand opening of new pickleball courts

On the south side of the intersection of South Halstead Road and West Old Highway 40, a Salina resident left a red 1998 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck on the railroad tracks.

Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan said shortly before 12:15 a.m. this morning, a train struck the empty vehicle and reported the crash to Saline County.

"It had been parked on the tracks facing eastbound when the train came from the west and struck it from behind," Soldan said. "Deputies checked the area and located the driver."

Shortly after deputies arrived on the scene, they located 25-year-old Mackenzie Lewis, a Salina resident, around 12:38 a.m., just more than a mile away at the intersection of West Old Highway 40 and Interstate 135.

Soldan said deputies were unable to identify Lewis' reasons for parking the vehicle on the tracks but found drug paraphernalia and some methamphetamine in the truck and on Lewis. He also had no proof of insurance.

Deputies arrested Lewis and requested charges for drug possession, drug paraphernalia, parking in a prohibited place and no proof of insurance.

Train strikes parked truck, Saline County Sheriff's Office finds drugs

BY SALINA POST Information courtesy Greater Salina Community Foundation The 13th year of Match Madness proved to be “The Lucky One,” raising over $1.1 million in a single day for 100 local nonprofits, setting a new record.

On March 21, donors contributed $786,246 to 100 nonprofit endowed funds held at the Greater Salina Community Foundation for long-term support. That combined with $320,171 in matching funds and bonus prizes brought the total impact for the day to $1,106,417.

“The amount of generosity that flowed through the Fieldhouse that day blows me away,” said Jessica&nbsp;Martin, President &amp; Executive Director. “We had donations of all sizes that when added together made a big impact. That’s the definition of community.”

The event was held at the Salina Fieldhouse from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. where donors could make their donation and visit one of the 74 nonprofit booths that were set up ready to share about their mission.&nbsp;All donations were matched up to 50% in the form of an instant cash grant to the charity from a $313,000 match pool.&nbsp;

Nonprofits also had the opportunity to earn up to $130 in the Bill Grevas Minute to Win It Free Throw Contest sponsored by Bennington State Bank and $1,300 in the BE Wealth Half Court Shot contest.&nbsp;

When Ken and&nbsp;Karen Ebert decided to sponsor the USD 305&nbsp;fifth&nbsp;graders in 2023, they hoped it would inspire others to do the same —and it did! Thanks to the generosity of several donors&nbsp;every&nbsp;fifth&nbsp;grader in Saline County was able to donate $10 to&nbsp;their&nbsp;favorite charity at Match Madness.&nbsp;Overall, 634 fifth graders participated, supporting 84 of the 100 charities.<figure>

 </figure>One goal of taking students to Match Madness is to teach them about philanthropy and the joy of giving. “A small donation can make a huge difference,”said Fifth grader Blakely Chamberlain.Blakely’s gift is also endowed meaning her $10 donation will grow to $46 in 20 years. This may not seem like a lot, but when Blakely’s donation is combined with all the 634&nbsp;fifth&nbsp;graders, their&nbsp;donation of $6,340&nbsp;will grow to $29,164&nbsp;in 20 years,&nbsp;all while making annual grants to nonprofits.&nbsp; Celebrating SuccessThe day ended with a celebration and after party at the Prickly Pear from 7-11 p.m. where nonprofits, donors and Foundation&nbsp;staff watched the final numbers tally in for what really proved to be “The Lucky One!”&nbsp;“Match Madness is always a terrific day for our community and for everyone who participates, so there is always a feeling of not wanting it to end.&nbsp; Extending the in-person giving window until 11pm at The Prickly Pear was a terrific way for everybody to continue the fun and celebrate the huge impact that donors make for our community,” said Michael Chambers, GSCF’s VP of Community Impact.Since 2012, Match Madness has generated nearly $6 million for 112 local nonprofits.&nbsp;
