Dozens of people gathered on top of Coronado Heights on Friday evening for the spectacular solar event that unfolded as Kansans craned their necks upward toward the sky.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the rare event followed an intense solar storm, sending the sights of the Northern Lights deep into the United States.

The usually quiet, small park next to the historic castle on top of Coronado Heights swelled with visitors for the event, all hoping to see the rare solar display.
