A furious fourth-quarter rally by Saint Mary pushed the Spires past the Coyotes 75-70 on Saturday night inside Mabee Arena.

Saint Mary outscored the Coyotes 24-13 in the fourth quarter after KWU held a 57-51 lead over the Spires after three quarters.

The Spires got within two points with 8:13 left, but a score by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/d112d2df-debd-4979-b969-87ce7f368331?elinkdata=18368">Hampton Williams</a> kept the Coyotes up by four.

Neither team scored for over two minutes when <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/68fb5399-863e-4ae3-bdf3-498b8817a999?elinkdata=18368">Paige Chauncey</a> broke the drought for the Coyotes with a bucket cleaning up a missed shot by Williams.

Saint Mary drew within a point at 64-64 with 3:49 left and after Williams scored, the Spires tied it with a 3-pointers and then took the lead with 2:38 to go. Free throws by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/9864184d-9c50-4021-bd90-81370f7f7e68?elinkdata=18368">Angel Lee</a> tied it again, but another Saint Mary 3-pointer and free throws put the Spires up 73-68 with 54 seconds left.

Free throws by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/7bdf6db5-201f-4a19-bbb0-089542e4f2a3?elinkdata=18368">LaMyah Ricks</a> got the Coyotes within three with 34 seconds left, but the Coyotes could not draw even, as the Spires hit free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Saint Mary led 11-4 to start the game as Wesleyan was slow out of the gates. KWU trailed by as many as eight in the first quarter before cutting it to four at the first quarter horn.

The Coyotes drew even with 8:43 to go in the second on a bucket by Williams, and a 3-pointer by Williams gave Wesleyan its first lead of the night at 22-19 with 8:19 to go. The points also sparked a 12-0 KWU run that gave Wesleyan a 25-19 lead with 7:56 left in the half.

Saint Mary was again within two at 26-24 when the Coyotes used a 10-2 run to take a 36-26 lead with 2:31 to go. KWU took a 38-31 lead into the break.

USM was within two with 2:52 in the third but a Bowman triple would help the Coyotes hold the lead and have a 6-point margin at the end of the quarter.

KWU went a combined 6 of 38 in the first and fourth quarters, finishing the night shooting 20 of 67 for 29.9 percent. Williams and Chauncey had eight rebounds each.

Wesleyan does maintain a 2-game lead in the KCAC standings as Friends was upset by Avila on Saturday night.

KWU WBB topped by Spires 75-50

PARKVILLE, Mo. - Kansas Wesleyan University Men's Volleyball went on a hot streak with two clean sweep wins in the Park Invitational Tournament.

The Coyotes started the day with a mid-morning match up against the Tigers of Central Christian College of Kansas, where they ran away with scores of 25-14, 25-9, 25-13.

The Coyotes and the Tigers started the game trading a few points each bringing the score to 3-3. Then all of a sudden Kansas Wesleyan went on a 7-0 run to take the score to 10-3 KWU. Coyotes would go on another 5 point run curiosity of three service aces by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/1962dfe0-a1c2-4e10-87bc-b1b4dae2ab58?elinkdata=18337">Jonnatan Batiz-Olivas</a> to put KWU up 17-8. The Tigers had no answer as the Coyotes went on another four point run to end the first set 25-14.

Coyotes kept their foot on the gas for set two as they went on a 5-0 run to start the set with strong defense that forced attack errors on the Tigers. KWU counted to dominate the net and went on to win set two 25-9.

Set three was a similar story as the Coyotes continued their trend of making Central Christian uncomfortable at the net and a handful of service aces form <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/25baafc2-f58e-469d-b344-239a1fb8afe2?elinkdata=18337">Jeremy Lapeze</a> and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/c524b76e-56c1-44f0-b66b-c2a14fab7d54?elinkdata=18337">Bradley Neff</a> to lead the Coyotes to win set three with a score of 25-13 to sucre the sweep, winning the first game of the day at 3-0.

KWU kept the same confidence, intensity, and teamwork to put themselves ahead of UM. KWU found themselves in a close one to start only leading by one at 13-12. The Coyotes then out together a five point run to lead the Jimmies 17-12 after a three kills in a row by KWU's Copper Stepp. The Coyotes carried this momentum to win set one 25-16.

Coyote MVB sweeps matches on second day of Park Invitational

Kansas Wesleyan Baseball opened the home portion of the season hosting the Kansas Wesleyan Coyote Classic on Saturday at Dean Evans Stadium and the newly constructed Pestinger Family Field.

The Coyotes split their two games on Saturday defeating Science and Arts of Oklahoma 6-3, but then losing to Doane 13-5.

In the game with USAO, the Droves scored first in the top of the first inning as Gage Ninness led off with a single and later scored on Christian Morro's single. After Morro was picked off, Coyote started <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/ea78b652-0bb5-4383-a836-9ad71abf9f82?elinkdata=18306">Nathan Righi</a> got back to back strikeouts to end the inning.

In the bottom of the first, the Coyotes put three on the board. <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/8c7abbbd-5aa6-4ffd-b0bd-f93c94eb5d31?elinkdata=18306">Jacob Williamson</a> walked and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/d4a18760-52b7-410e-9560-b37db3efdd67?elinkdata=18306">Tyler Favretto</a> was hit by a pitch. Doane put two runners on to start the fourth, who then advanced on a failed pick error and then another Coyote error brought in the first run. A single loaded the bases, but the Coyotes got an out on a fielder's choice. The Tigers then added another run on a double. After a strikeout, another KWU error allowed two runs to score and Doane to take a 7-5 lead.

Doane led off the fifth with a homer that sparked another five-run rally for the Tigers to take a 12-5 lead.

Doane added one more run in the seventh for the 13-5 difference.

Baseball splits games on first day of Coyote Classic

WACO, Texas (AP) — Robert Wright III scored 20 of his 24 points after halftime, and Baylor rallied from a 21-point deficit late in the first half for an 81-70 victory over No. 11 Kansas on Saturday.

The collapse by the Jayhawks (15-6, 6-4 Big 12), who led 40-21 at halftime, came a week after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/houston-kansas-score-6aef47ebe2c4dcc0cf8b207b4c512fa6">sixth-ranked Houston pulled off improbable rallies</a>&nbsp;in the final seconds of regulation and the first overtime in a double-OT win at Allen Fieldhouse.

It was the biggest blown lead in a loss in the storied program's history, surpassing the 20-point lead (44-24) Kansas squandered in a 91-74 loss at home to top-ranked Arizona on Jan. 27, 2003.

Norchad Omier put the Bears (14-7, 6-4) within 46-45 on two free throws with 13:39 remaining after they trailed 38-17 late in the first half.

Baylor took the lead for good on a tiebreaking 3-pointer from Jalen Celestine with four minutes to go, and after Kansas had rebuilt its lead to 10.

Hunter Dickinson scored 20 points for Kansas, and Dajuan Harris Jr. had 12.

Omier had 18 points and 16 rebounds, and VJ Edgecombe scored 14 before leaving with an injury early in the second half.

Kansas was taken out of its offensive rhythm by Baylor's full-court pressure to start the second half. The Jayhawks shot 36% in the second half.

Baylor finished the rally without Edgecombe, who entered third in the Big 12 in scoring in league games. He went down early in the second half after missing a driving layup and limped to the locker room.

The go-ahead 3 from Celestine, who scored 12 points, changed the game for good. The Bears outscored the Jayhawks 18-7 from that point.

The Jayhawks had a 20-0 advantage in bench scoring in the first half. The Bears had a 12-8 edge after the break.

Kansas plays No. 3 Iowa State at home Monday. Baylor visits 22nd-ranked Texas Tech on Tuesday.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Dug McDaniel scored 20 points to lead five Kansas State players in double figures as the Wildcats upset No. 3 Iowa State 80-61 on Saturday.

With this win, the Wildcats (10-11, 4-6 Big 12) ended a 15-game road losing streak — 12 of which occurred within the Big 12. Kansas State has now won its last three overall games, also beating then-No. 23 West Virginia and Oklahoma State.

Coleman Hawkins added 17 points and Brendan Hausen had 15 for the Wildcats.

The Cyclones (17-4, 7-3) saw their 29-game home winning streak end.

Tamin Lipsey tied a season-high with 20 points for the Cyclones with Curtis Jones adding 14 and Joshua Jefferson with 13.

Kansas State: The Wildcats took down their first top-five team on the road since 2017 when Kansas State beat then-No. 2 Baylor 56-54 at the Ferrell Center on Feb. 2.

Iowa State: The Cyclones tied a season-high with 18 turnovers, as they've gone back-to-back games with this amount of turnovers. Both games were losses.

The Cyclones tried to claw their way back into the game with a 13-0 run late in the second half, but a 3-pointer from Hausen extinguished any hope left for Iowa State.

The Wildcats tied a season-high of 22 fouls committed but still found a way to upset a top-three team on the road.

Iowa State hosts TCU next Saturday. Kansas State visits Arizona State Tuesday night.

The Southeast of Saline basketball teams completed another busy three-game week with a combined record of 5-1 as they hosted the Ellsworth Bearcats on Friday.

The Lady Trojans couldn’t quite overcome the Lady Bearcats red hot start, as Ellsworth pulled off the 49-39 upset, while the Southeast boys climbed above .500 for the first time this season in a thrilling 61-58 come-from-behind victory.

Girls: Ellsworth 49, Southeast of Saline 39&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

After turning the ball over on their first possession of the game, Ellsworth went 3-3 on their next three possessions as three different Lady Bearcats hit from beyond the arc to take an early 9-0 lead. 

After making the score 9-3 on an old-fashioned three-point play from Southeast’s Suttyn Douglas, Ellsworth extended their lead to 12 points before ending the opening frame with a 17-10 advantage over the Lady Trojans.&nbsp; 

The Lady Bearcats continued to keep Southeast at arm's length as they led at halftime 30-21, at the end of the third quarter 41-30, and then won the game by a score of 49-39.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Abigail Pearson was the only Lady Trojan to score in double figures as she led all scorers with 19 points.&nbsp; 

Ellsworth was led in points by Jo Lindsley with 11 points.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Lady Trojans suffer their first league loss, as they fall to 11-4 overall and 6-1 in the NCAA.&nbsp; Ellsworth climbs to 10-4 overall, and 5-2 in league play.

Boys: Southeast of Saline 61, Ellsworth 58&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Southeast may have scored first, but it was Ellsworth that owned most of the first quarter, taking their first lead of the game at 7-6, sparking a 15-7 run to close out the first quarter with a 19-13 lead over Southeast.&nbsp; 

After a Southeast timeout and the score 26-13, the Trojans started chipping away at the deficit, knocking it down to 35-26 at halftime.&nbsp; 

After going a 28-16 run, knocking the Bearcat lead down to a single point, Southeast gained the lead at 43-42 on a Gannon Jacobson steal, followed by a two-handed dunk.&nbsp; 

The Trojans led by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter before holding on for the 61-58 victory.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Owen Bailey scored a season-high 25 points, leading all scorers, followed by Gannon Jacobson with 17 points and Sam Knopf with 11 points. &nbsp;

Jace Thomasson led the Bearcats in scoring with 19 points, followed by Tucker Goss and Cooper McGowan, each with 11 points.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Trojans, Bearcats Split League Double-Header

PARKVILLE, Mo. - Kansas Wesleyan Men's Volleyball dropped both matches on the first day of the Park Invitational at Breckon Sports Center.

The Coyotes opened with a four-set loss to Westcliff (Calif.) 21-25, 25-20, 12-25, 22-25.

Wesleyan had a 4-2 lead in the opening set, and led 8-7 when Westcliff scored three straight to take a 10-8 lead. Back came the Coyotes with three in a row to take an 11-10 lead, and the teams went back and forth, no one leading by more than two points until late when Westcliff scored four in a row to take a 24-20 lead. A kill by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/f1b0c8fd-4f74-4425-8135-b996fa5bc98b?elinkdata=18275">Zayin Martinez</a> stopped the run, but Westcliff finished the set on the next point.

KWU trailed early in the second set, but down 10-8, KWU responded to take a 12-11 lead. KWU led 13-12 when Westcliff scored four straight to take a 16-13 lead. Back came the Coyotes however, rattling off five straight points to take an 18-16 lead. Westcliff tied it at 18, but five straight for the Coyotes was enough of an advantage to take the set 25-20 on an ace by <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/29d46d0e-5535-4320-86d1-e14877cf1bda?elinkdata=18275">Jaron Lindsay</a>.

The third was a struggle for the Coyotes who fell behind 8-2 and couldn't catch up.

The fourth set went back and forth to start both teams trading the lead. Wesleyan led 16-14, but Westcliff was able to take an 18-17 lead. KWU came back to tie it on a block by Martinez and <a href="http://kwucoyotes.com/services/go.ashx/0b0d6a46-159d-4762-bca8-5078694bf6d2?elinkdata=18275">Ryan Wagner</a>, but Westcliff got the final three points of the set to win.

Trailing 21-19 the Coyotes scored three straight to take a 22-21 lead. Goshen had set point at 24-22, but the Coyotes got two points to tie it at 24. The teams traded points until the Leafs scored the final two to take the set.

Men’s Volleyball falls twice to open Park Invitational

Kansas Wesleyan Competitive Dance picked up a big win in its second competition of the season at the Coyote Classic on Friday night at Mabee Arena.

The Coyotes bested the five-team field with a score of 66.67.

Bethel was second with a score of 63.43, Missouri Valley was third with a 59.87, Friends was fourth with a 55.17 and Southwestern was fifth with a 45.63.

Up next for the Coyotes is a trip to the York Crown Classic next Friday in York, Nebraska.

Kansas Wesleyan Competitive Cheer opened its 2025 season on Friday night with a third place finish in the Coyote Classic inside Mabee Arena.

The Coyotes welcomed Missouri Valley and Friends to Mabee Arena for the competition.

Missouri Valley was the winner of the event with a score of 79.83. Friends was second with a score of 74.48. KWU finished third with a score of 64.26.

The Coyotes are back in action next weekend at the Crown Classic hosted by York University in York, Nebraska.

Those that were nominated with a perfect 4.0 GPA include men’s cross country runner&nbsp;Devin Chappel; women’s cross country runners&nbsp;Cecilia Fisher&nbsp;and&nbsp;Alexa Rios; football player&nbsp;Will Anciaux; soccer players&nbsp;Adah Anderson,&nbsp;Ally Brown,&nbsp;Paige Dickson&nbsp;and&nbsp;Reece Walrod; as well as volleyball players Molly Ramsey and&nbsp;Symone Sims.

Sixty-Five K-State Student-Athletes Earn Fall Academic All-Big 12 Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals tonight announced a two-year contract with right-handed pitcher&nbsp;Carlos Estévez&nbsp;(es-TEH-vez). The deal also includes a club option for 2027. In a corresponding move, the Royals designated infielder&nbsp;Braden Shewmake&nbsp;for assignment.

Estévez, 32, recorded a career-best 2.45 ERA (15 ER in 55.0 IP) in 54 appearances last season with the Angels (34 games) and Phillies (20). He converted 20 saves with Los Angeles before being acquired on July 27 by Philadelphia, where he recorded 3 wins and 6 saves in 21.0 innings.

He was an American League All-Star with the Angels in 2023, when he recorded a 3.90 ERA (27 ER in 62.1 IP), a career-high 31 saves in 63 appearances and an 11.3 K/9 (78 K in 62.1 IP).

Estévez’s 57 saves over the last two seasons (2023-24) rank 9th in the Majors.

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—The Kansas City Royals tonight announced a two-year contract with right-handed pitcher&nbsp;Carlos Estévez&nbsp;(es-TEH-vez). The deal also includes a club option for 2027. In a corresponding move, the Royals designated infielder&nbsp;Braden Shewmake&nbsp;for assignment.Estévez, 32, recorded a career-best 2.45 ERA (15 ER in 55.0 IP) in 54 appearances last season with the Angels (34 games) and Phillies (20). He converted 20 saves with Los Angeles before being acquired on July 27 by Philadelphia, where he recorded 3 wins and 6 saves in 21.0 innings.He was an American League All-Star with the Angels in 2023, when he recorded a 3.90 ERA (27 ER in 62.1 IP), a career-high 31 saves in 63 appearances and an 11.3 K/9 (78 K in 62.1 IP).Estévez’s 57 saves over the last two seasons (2023-24) rank 9th in the Majors.
