I like Christopher Columbus. While Columbus Day is a Federal Holiday, much like its namesake, there is a mixed response to celebrating it. Some businesses are closed, but most are open. Federal offices are closed, but right now that is pretty much every day for Federal offices. Columbus, like his holiday, received mixed reviews while alive and still 500 plus years later. Even though Columbus has detractors he also exhibited characteristics that we would do well to emulate.

Born in 1451 to a working-class family, Christopher had three brothers and a sister. One of the characteristics that young Christopher had was a desire for adventure. His curiosity about the world would serve him well throughout his life. We may not have a new world to find, but we should always be curious about our world and have a sense of adventure to make it better.

Columbus was mainly self-educated and had a good understanding of geometry, astronomy, history, and geography. One untrue myth is that he came up with the concept that the earth is round. Actually, most scholars had known the spherical nature of the earth for hundreds of years. What was not known was exactly how large the earth was. Columbus actually made a serious error in his calculations of the distance to India going to the west from Europe. He believed it to only be about 25% of the actual distance. If he had calculated correctly the impossibility of sailing that far would have prevented him from even trying. This brings out a second truism about Columbus. Always keep learning, and even when you make mistakes, you can learn even more from them.

Christopher’s life experiences also prepared him for the epic trip that he would make when he was in his forties. He started sailing commercially from his early teenage years, and had traveled as far north as Great Britain and as far south as Africa. Possessing a sharp mind, he had learned at least four languages which served him well as he traveled. Even more important to Columbus was his persistence. He went from court to court in Europe selling his idea of a route to India to the West. All but one of the monarchies in Europe rejected him. The one monarchy that listened to him, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, eventually capitulated to giving him ships to sail. If he was successful, they agreed to give him the title of “Admiral of the Ocean Sea.” 

Had it not been for Columbus’s persistence, it may have been another hundred years or more before the continent, known as America, was discovered.

Perhaps the most distinguishing character trait Columbus had was courage. In a world that seems to be afraid of practically everything, the courage of Christopher Columbus alone should make him worthy of a holiday in his honor. The thought of getting on a tiny boat with limited provisions with the goal of sailing thousands of miles would be daunting to most of us. 

Adding to this scenario is the fact that the primary means of navigation was looking at the stars. Finally, the fact that he had no idea where they were actually headed would deter even the bravest individuals. Columbus may have benefited from not knowing how unlikely his success would be. While ignorance may have contributed to his bravery, we should still copy the courage he had to go where no one had ever gone before. I hope when you think of Columbus Day that you will remember curiosity, love of learning, persistence, and courage. These are traits that will serve us as well as they did Christopher Columbus over 500 years ago.

View from the Hill: Admiral of the ocean sea

In a recent exposé, KCUR reporters interviewed immigration lawyers and former detainees in order to analyze the conditions in the Chase County Jail in Cottonwood Falls, where many immigration detainees are being held. 

Referring to the situation as a “war of attrition,” the reporters described a number of troubling conditions, including overcrowding, sleeping on floors, and a denial of medical care. One detainee went for several weeks without care for a tooth infection, leading him to waive his right to a hearing and return to Honduras to get treatment for the acute pain. In the midst of all this, detainees are encouraged to “self deport,” that is, waive their rights to consult with an attorney and have a hearing, instead leaving the country immediately. They are promised $1000 if they do this.

It all paints a disturbing picture. The proper way to enforce immigration law would be a major increase in funding for more judges, to process the huge backlog of cases that existed long before the start of Trump’s second term. In fact, a major immigration overhaul was sponsored in Congress in 2024. It would have included funding for this. When first sponsored, the immigration bill was bipartisan, but it did not pass. Today, proper administrative reforms have been replaced with poor conditions and a $1000 incentive, apparently designed to pressure detainees to waive their rights and leave the country without their hearings, often leaving family behind. They may never see them again.

In the landmark decision Plyler v Doe (1982), the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that undocumented immigrants have equal protection of the laws under the U.S. Constitution. Notably, the Court found that the Constitution confers these rights on persons, regardless of whether they are U.S. citizens. Pressuring detainees to give up these rights is government by harassment. Those of all political stripes who support the rule of law should speak out forcefully against it.

Sadly, this is not the only recent example. 

In the “One Big Beautiful Bill” recently passed by Congress, substantial cuts were made to the Medicaid program. Of course, one way to make such cuts would be to alter the eligibility requirements for Medicaid, but this is not how Congress did it. Instead, the bill includes stepped-up requirements for recipients to verify their eligibility by completing complicated verification procedures. In practice, this results in people otherwise eligible being denied or kicked off the program because they are unaware, unable, or simply forget to complete the paperwork, a process that Planet Money’s Erika Beras has dubbed “The Paperwork Trap.” It gets worse, too– those in the most need are also the ones most likely to struggle with the paperwork, and therefore the most likely to be denied care.

If Congress wishes to step up enforcement of immigration laws, let them pass a bipartisan bill addressing the longstanding shortage of immigration judges. If they wish to alter eligibility for Medicaid or other benefits, they may do so. But, intimidating people into waiving their constitutional rights, and denying benefits to those most in need because of the paperwork trap are both alarming examples of government by harassment.

Insight Kansas: Are we entering an era of government by harassment?

If you have driven by your local grain elevator in the last couple of weeks you may have noticed an increased activity of heavy-duty trucks with grain trailers attached. Corn harvest is well underway with some soybeans being harvested as well. It is easy to overlook the importance of agriculture in our state and nation, as the number of fulltime farmers has declined in Kansas to just over 41,000 farmers. This comprises only 1.4% of the population of our state. However, agriculture is the largest economic driver in Kansas according to the Wheat Commission. Agriculture contributed $62B or 43% of the state’s economy.

We all know that our state leads the nation in wheat production in most years, but did you know that Kansas is a leading producer of several other products as well. The largest sector of agriculture in the Sunflower State is actually the cattle industry with sales ten times greater than wheat. While there are six states that have more cattle than Kansas, the cattle feeding industry is the third largest in the United States. We export more beef than any other state. In a similar manner corn production is greater in our state than wheat, nearly doubling the total value produced. Additionally, Kansas is the leading producer of grain sorghum in the United States.

Even though agriculture is the backbone of our state’s economy, the health of agriculture is not good. Restrictive policies and over regulation along with falling exports have positioned all of agriculture, and particularly Kansas, in a perilous situation. Decreases in farm income and increases in debt have resulted in a crisis that has not been experienced since the 1980’s when land values plummeted and farm bankruptcies were a common occurrence. We are at a critical juncture in agriculture and only two key factors are preventing total collapse. Interest rates are in a manageable range which has enabled farmers to continue to operate for the most part in a cash flow position that prevents foreclosures. The second factor that has been favorable, especially to Kansas farmers, is the historic strength in the cattle industry. Strong demand for quality beef worldwide, and a historically small cow herd in the United States, has profited those involved in cattle production.

As a Senator in the strong agriculture region of central Kansas I am especially interested in policy that will prevent an agricultural collapse like we lived through in the 1980’s. Federal policy that improves exports of agricultural products, especially soybeans and grain sorghum, would have a long-term positive influence on Kansas farmers. The expansion of value-added industries could also be a game changer for a struggling farm economy. The use of ethanol provided an additional market for grain products over the last 25 years; the advent of nonpetroleum based jet fuel could provide an additional avenue to improve farm income.

The aviation industry uses less than 1% of bio-based Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) currently. Many airlines are committed to increasing that percentage. In just the United States the FAA reports that 45,000 flights take off (and land) every day. By using SAF, agricultural by products as well as used cooking oil from an agricultural source could benefit our farm economy. Please contact me on your thoughts about strengthening the number one industry in Kansas and preventing the next impending farm disaster.

View from the Hill: Averting an impending ag crisis

On September 21, the day before the autumn equinox, about 20 people gathered in Memorial Park in Winfield, Kansas, to mark the conclusion of a local celebration of “Sun Day.” It was a hot Sunday afternoon, and downtown Winfield was pretty quiet. But that didn’t defeat the spirit that was felt by the participants, and the pride they had in doing their part for the cause.

What cause? Solar power, of course. Sun Day was the brainchild of Bill McKibben, an environmental journalist and activist who has educated millions over the decades with his writings on climate change, renewable energy, local food production, and the conservation of natural spaces. Given the many failures which environmentalism has faced when confronted by the consumptive habits of modern America, McKibben’s work has often been rather dour. Yet of late McKibben has been enthusiastic, even downright giddy—because amazing innovations in photovoltaic cells, solar grid batteries and more over the past decade have changed the game: renewable means of generating electricity are now, even without government subsidies, cheaper than doing so by burning fossil fuels.

This, McKibben felt, is news to be celebrated. Hence, Sun Day—a national day of action, with close of 500 events scheduled across the United States and around the world, involving art and music, workshops and worship, all focused on helping people to appreciate the momentousness of this technological and environmental moment, and hopefully thereby encouraging them to take advantage of and build upon these new opportunities to get power directly from the sun.

Such encouragement is still very much needed. Just because the technology exists doesn’t mean that the transition to it will be simple. The upfront costs are significant, the needed infrastructure is difficult to install, and the financial realities of solar power (from negotiating with China, where most of the advances in the technology are taking place, to negotiating with local energy companies, who want to maintain the profitability of their grids) are complicated to say the least. On top of that, falsehoods about renewable energy—some of which can be traced back to Kansas’s own Koch Industries--flow far too easily from both the White House and Topeka, leading too often to county-level resistance to increasingly affordable solar panel installations.

Nonetheless, personal experiences—and business savings—with renewables are combining with political education to build momentum. Despite cuts in support for alternative energy sources in the Big Beautiful Bill, Evergy still plans to move ahead with its plans for solar projects in Kansas and Missouri (though it’s hedging its bets with new natural gas projects as well), and NextEra Energy in Jackson County isn’t far behind. The growing demand by Kansans for rooftop or deck solar panels are leading to fights with homeowner associations, all while more farmers, hospitals, and homeowners are seeing the light (literally).

A personal confession of interest here: we installed solar panels on our Wichita home over three years ago, and aside from one breakdown with our connection to the grid early on—which was, I admit, an expensive pain—our electric bills have been a tiny fraction of what they once were ever since. Looking around Kansas’s largest city, I see solar start-ups and increased interest everywhere. A full transition to renewables is still years, if not decades, away. But on Sun Day, in downtown Winfield, this more environmentally sustainable and financially affordable future seemed closer to me, and my fellow renewable energy advocates, than it ever has been before.

INSIGHT KANSAS: A sunny day, and a better day, in Kansas

More than 50 years ago, a horrifying moment inside a Kansas nursing home sparked a movement that would change the state.

While reading to a nursing home resident, Lawrence advocate Anna “Petey” Cerf heard the woman’s roommate call out in pain. A nurse entered the room and snapped, “Oh shut up. You’re always yelling.” The next day, that resident was dead.

Petey was devastated but not silent. She joined forces with Jessie Branson, Lesley Ketzel, Harriet Nehring, Katie Pyle, and Bryona Wiley, women from Lawrence and Topeka who refused to accept that this was just the way things were. They formed a grassroots committee, phoned neighbors, visited towns across Kansas, and listened to the stories of families and residents suffering from abuse, neglect, and systemic failure. In 1975, they founded Kansans for Improvement of Nursing Homes (KINH), now Kansas Advocates for Better Care (KABC).

Their work was bold. They investigated over 230 nursing homes, exposed dangerous conditions, and pushed for policy reform. Their efforts led to surprise inspections by Governor Bennett, public hearings across the state, and the passage of new laws to increase oversight and protect residents. Petey proudly declared in 1981, “I would say we are a militant group. I hope we are, because if someone doesn’t get militant, nothing will get done.”

Sadly, the fight isn’t over. Across Kansas, residents are still harmed by chronic understaffing, abuse of antipsychotic medication, minimum staff training, and lack of accountability from the State.

We cannot afford to be passive. If you care about your aging parents, your neighbors, or your future self, now is the time to speak up. Visit a local nursing home. Ask questions. Support policies that prioritize people over profit. And demand that our state leaders do the same!

As KABC marks its 50th anniversary, we are as committed as ever to carrying forward Petey’s legacy: demanding accountability, protecting residents, and fighting for quality care in every corner of our state. OPINION: How a Kansas nonprofit sparked 50 years of change in long-term care

It’s hard to imagine waking up and going to work on payday only to find you have less money than you started with at the beginning of the pay period. That’s the reality many farmers are facing as fall harvest enters full swing in Kansas. Almost every acre of corn and soybeans across the state is expected to cost more to plant, grow and harvest than farmers will receive when they sell their crops.

Revenue from wheat, soybeans and corn is forecasted to decline by 12, nine and six percent, respectively, in 2025. It will be the third year in a row with declining receipts for those commodities while expenses have remained the same or risen.

Buying at retail, selling at wholesale and paying the freight both ways has always made farming a tough business, but this year is a good example of why farmers do what they do for reasons other than money. Good weather and good yields don’t make up for low prices, and most producers will end up selling their crops at a loss if conditions don’t change in a hurry.

Grain is a global commodity, and buyers have more options today than they did 10 or 20 years ago thanks to competition in South America. That’s made it far easier for China to use U.S. farmers as leverage in trade negotiations. China hasn’t purchased a single order of soybeans from the U.S. to date this year, despite representing more than half of U.S. soy exports in 2024.

Domestically, the picture isn’t much better. Livestock and grain markets rarely move in the same direction. High grain prices make each additional pound of beef more expensive in the feedlot, and the inverse is true. The drought-induced slimming of the cattle herd means there’s fewer mouths to feed, putting additional downward pressure on grain prices while beef is near record levels.

The slowdown in the crop economy will show up beyond the fields. There will be fewer cups of coffee at the local café. Fewer remodeling supplies sold at the hardware store. Fewer loan originations at the bank. Fewer pickups bought at the local dealership. School bond issues to invest in the next generation will face uphill battles at the ballot box this year in farm country.

This downturn is discouraging but not quite dire. Farmers will use a variety of tools to make it through. Grain will go into storage in hopes prices are better tomorrow. Balance sheets were healthy entering this current slump and land values are holding on, for now. That equity will be used to buy time.

Hopefully there’s good news on the trade front soon that will lift prices. It’s also likely the estimates of strong yields aren’t fully realized once harvest is further along, reducing the spread between an abundant supply and scarce demand.

There’s always hope the markets will turn before harvest ends. Or they’ll rally over the winter to more than cover the cost of storing grain. Or next year will be better. It’s an eternal mindset that gets tested over and over again.

Most have made it through rough spots like these before and come out strong because of it. Looking back, it won’t seem as bad as it feels right now. There’s no shame in admitting to being scared or stressed. And help is available if you’re struggling.

INSIGHT KANSAS FARM BUREAU: Better times ahead

The concept of equality, which was revolutionary at the time, was introduced by the Declaration of Independence nearly 250 years ago. Prior to the words of Thomas Jefferson, common thought was that governments were put in place to benefit the few who were by relation to aristocrats destined to rule. The “American Experiment” showed that the idea of a “ruling class” was a myth perpetuated by those whom it benefitted. The concept of equality contended that all humans had basic rights, that although not always guaranteed by government, were given by God. It followed then that the role of government was not to select rights to give to certain people, but rather to protect the rights that all people should have. These rights had nothing to do with position in society, possessions, or wealth. The equality discussed in our founding documents is about opportunity.

When our Constitution was written, the authors struggled to define the exact rights to include. In the final draft our founders decided to define the rights that government had and leave everything not defined to the people. Time and amendments to our Constitution have clarified that the government will protect specific rights, like the right to own property and to speak freely, while still leaving many freedoms undefined with the caveat that all other freedoms rest with the people. In particular, our system of government gives economic freedom, with the “market” determining success and failure rather than the government.

In the 19th century, in response to the vestiges of feudalism, Karl Marx developed an idea that governments of the people should not only guarantee freedom from the idea of a ruling class, but should also have an equalizing influence on the distribution of wealth. In following the idea of the folk tale Robin Hood, possessions should be taken from those who have them and given to those who do not. This is the thought process behind the term equity. While equality relies on rights given to all people, equity relies on the judgement of the governing to “give” to some what is taken from others. While equality, and equity may share the same root meaning, they have very different impacts on societies.

Experience has shown that citizens will work harder and be more productive when they are guaranteed that the wealth they accumulate will be protected rather than confiscated by the government. While nearly everyone will support a certain amount of socialism to provide for certain governmental services, there is a “tipping point” where the oppression of excessive taxation reduces the desire to produce or work more.

The United State of America provided a blueprint for productivity which resulted in an increased standard of living for its citizens that has been a drawing card for oppressed people around the world. This has translated into a desire for excellence. Loosely defined as “being the best you can be,” excellence has become the theme of our country. From athletic accomplishments, business growth, academic research, and personal benevolence, America became the standard of the world. In the last half century there has been a shift from focusing on equality and instead emphasizing equity in our country. The result has been a decrease in economic productivity with many businesses relocating to other countries with more economic freedom. If we are to continue to be the bright shining city on the hill, we need to recommit ourselves to protect the rights of people to succeed and encourage the excellence that has become the envy of the world.

OPINION: Equality, Equity and Excellence

In today’s polarized political climate, few constitutional provisions are invoked as frequently — and are as misunderstood — as the First Amendment. From social media bans to campus protests, Americans often claim their “free speech rights” are being violated. But what does the First Amendment actually protect? And why was it included in the Bill of Rights in the first place?

Let’s start with the basics. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states: “Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech.” This language is clear in one crucial respect: it restricts the actions of the government, not private individuals or companies. That means if Twitter (now X), Facebook, or any other private platform decides to remove a post or ban a user, it is not a First Amendment violation. These companies are not arms of the government; they are private entities with their own terms of service.

This distinction is foundational. The First Amendment was crafted in the late 18th century by a generation deeply wary of centralized government power. Having just fought a revolution against British tyranny, the Framers sought to ensure that the new American government could not silence dissent or punish unpopular opinions. Freedom of speech was not just a philosophical ideal, it was a practical safeguard against authoritarianism.

The First Amendment, along with its protections for religion, press, assembly, and petition, was designed to create a public sphere where ideas could be freely exchanged without fear of government reprisal. It is no accident that freedom of speech is listed first, making it the cornerstone of democratic discourse.

Importantly, this principle is not unique to the federal Constitution. The Kansas Constitution also enshrines freedom of speech in its own Bill of Rights. This reflects a long-standing commitment at both the state and national levels to uphold the free exchange of ideas.

Section 11 of the Kansas Bill of Rights affirms that “all persons may freely speak, write or publish their sentiments on all subjects”, but it also goes on to highlight that people are “responsible for the abuse of such rights”. In other words, the Kansas Constitution says the quiet part out loud: freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences.

Employers, private universities, and private organizations may impose limits on speech within their domains. Additionally, speech that incites violence, spreads defamation, or constitutes harassment may also fall outside constitutional protection. The Supreme Court has repeatedly held that the First Amendment is not absolute — it does not protect all speech in all contexts.

Understanding the First Amendment requires more than quoting it. It demands a recognition of its purpose: to shield citizens from government censorship. It does not guarantee a platform or an audience. In a democracy, the right to speak freely is sacred, but so is the responsibility to use that right wisely.

So the next time someone claims their First Amendment rights are being violated, ask: Is the government involved? If not, it’s probably not a constitutional issue, it’s likely just a political disagreement. And that, too, is part of the messy, vibrant, and essential process of democratic debate.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Free speech isn't what you think it is

Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute’s CEO forum gathers top political leaders with 'Fortune 500' CEOs for a Chatham House rules discussion where direct quotes are off the record.&nbsp;

They had to face down the near unanimous verdict from over 100 top business leaders, representing some of the world’s largest companies and most iconic brands: 'Trump’s policies aren’t working!'

Business leaders at the forum worry that Trump is 'undermining' an economic system that took decades to build and has long benefited the U.S. more than any other country under both Republican and Democratic administrations, all for 'short-term' gains.&nbsp;

They see what’s happening as Trump hollows out U.S. economic foundations and institutions. They fear for America’s international standing amid the degradation of national security at the FBI, the CIA, and the Pentagon headed by unqualified, ignorant leadership.

This widespread sentiment is directly opposite to the heavily phony “Dear Leader” tributes of just a handful of tech titans (oligarchs), who benefit financially from Trump and are not representative of the CEO leadership class.

CEOs express dismay concerning foreign relations and economic issues are consistent with&nbsp;general opinion polling&nbsp;across&nbsp;the&nbsp;board. From Ipsos, Gallup, and the Associated Press to Emerson College, Quinnipiac University, and Morning Consult, send a clear message: America sharply disapproves of President Trump’s leadership.

The message is very clear: a desire to return to a respect for the balance of powers in government, to reinforce international allies, to fortify independent, to return to objective expertise of economists and scientists, to encourage 'freedom of speech,' to stop bullying countries, cities, and companies into resentful, uneconomical compromises.&nbsp;

In short, CEOs are calling to make America, America again.

OPINION: "CEOs finally speak up, Trump Is bad for business! - exclusive"

Earlier this month, I traveled to South Africa with the American Farm Bureau’s Partners in Advocacy Leadership program. Our group has been exploring labor challenges in agriculture, and South Africa offered valuable perspective. The country is a major provider of H-2A guest workers, who fill critical labor gaps on U.S. farms and harvest crews.

Alongside labor issues, we learned about South Africa’s agriculture, trade, geography, natural resources, government and culture. We were fortunate to have an exceptional guide, Manuela, who brought our trip to life. In fact, when I posted a photo of her online, a friend commented that she had also been his guide during a Kansas State University trip more than a decade ago — a small reminder of the close ties within agriculture.One lesson I’ve learned from traveling, both near and far, is a good guide makes all the difference. Manuela, who has lived in South Africa most of her life, offered not just knowledge but also passion for her country, flaws and all. Her decades of experience gave us insights we would have missed on our own.

Still, even a great guide can’t control everything. When we visited Kruger National Park, luck and timing played their part. Within minutes of entering, we saw elephants and a zebra. Over the next eight hours, we encountered giraffes, lions, cape buffalo, hippos, kudu, baboons, waterbuck and even a leopard. None of us had been to the park before, but we recognized that this was no ordinary day.

Our group’s excitement turned playful as we joked about what else was on our “bingo cards.” It felt almost as if we were willing each new sighting into reality. At day’s end, Manuela confirmed our experience had been extraordinary — even for her. She explained that in her decades of guiding, she had rarely seen such abundance in a single visit.

Manuela went further, suggesting that our group’s positive energy helped shape the day. She contrasted our attitudes with those of groups she described as entitled, rude or negative. Those groups, she said, often encounter endless problems: uncooperative weather, vehicle breakdowns or the inability to spot even common animals.

By contrast, she attributed our success to our respectful, grateful and upbeat spirit. Her words struck a chord. We became even more intentional about being the best group we could be — and the magic continued. We saw wildlife up close, connected with people who shared powerful personal stories, stumbled into unexpected discoveries and even had weather that seemed to turn favorable just when we needed it.

As a farmer, I know our attitudes didn’t change the weather. But I also know from experience that mindset matters. Looking back at different moments in my life, I can see how energy — positive or negative — often sets the tone for outcomes.

Of course, optimism doesn’t guarantee perfection. Crops fail, machinery breaks and plans unravel despite the best intentions. Yet when we approach challenges with gratitude and resilience, we’re better equipped to notice opportunities, appreciate small victories, and turn setbacks into stories worth telling.

Traveling in South Africa reinforced this simple truth: attitude shapes experience. Believing you’ll meet inspiring people, witness unforgettable moments and learn something new won’t make it certain — but it makes it far more likely. And when that belief spreads through a group, the results can feel nothing short of extraordinary.

INSIGHT KANSAS FARM BUREAU: Attitudes for the best possible experience

Life changes in instances. We live our lives in a comfortable routine, sometimes almost enjoying the mundane. Then in an instant everything changes. An example would be the attempted destruction of America when crazed terrorists killed over 3,000 people by flying planes into buildings. We all changed when that happened. This last week was the 24th anniversary of 9/11, as it is now called. Unfortunately, an event that happened the day before 9/11 changed our lives again.

The assassination of a sitting president, John Kennedy, happened before I can remember. However, I grew up with the impact of that event affecting our culture. Last week the assassination of a prominent figure in our culture, Charlie Kirk, has had an effect similar to the shooting of JFK. The stunned silence at hearing the news has been followed by a mixture of profound sorrow, shocked disbelief, and in some instances despicable glee. This is, of course, not the first time that public figures have been killed by crazed ideologues. This senseless killing though is different in a key area.

I do not spend much time listening to or “following” pod casts. The name of Charlie Kirk was familiar to me, but I had not delved into his message. The last several days I have made up for that lost time. This led me to realize that Kirk was primarily an evangelist who fully lived his faith in Jesus Christ. It is clear that he was assassinated not because of his conservative political thought, but rather he was martyred because of the way he shared his faith. Charlie could not be defeated in arguing about his faith convictions, so those who couldn’t tolerate him calling the darkness in society to repentance, took his life to still his tongue.

The age-old adage is that religion and politics do not mix. In the case of Charlie Kirk and millions of other Christ followers it is about faith, not religion. People with deep-rooted faith have no choice but to follow that faith in every aspect of their life. One of the reasons Charlie Kirk touched so many is that his faith was authentic, transparent, and all encompassing. 

Our forefathers were adamant that we should not have a “state” church. They were however, equally convinced that those who make decisions for policy in our government should be people of faith. Charlie got it right when he bridged the policy gap with an undying conviction about his faith.

The evil that ended that bright shining light actually gave ultimate credence to the message that could not be ignored. Unbridled selfish indulgence may be the face of the deterioration of society, but the truth of ultimate selfishness is that there is no room for God left in that life. The repentance that Charlie Kirk called for is the solution to the darkness that permeates. I encourage you to listen to his words and more importantly listen to the words he quotes when he references the book of truth, the Word of God, the Holy Bible. Those words will never be silenced.

OPINION: Charlie Kirk - a bright shining light

Fall field trips are in full swing for children and their teachers. While a teacher might notify parents of an upcoming field trip a week or two before the big day, the preparation work needed for a field trip to become reality sometimes happens many months prior.

While our family’s farm has hosted many groups in the past to talk about farming sorghum, wheat, corn or soybeans in central Kansas, the requests for visits have definitely increased since we began growing and marketing popcorn.&nbsp;Perhaps it’s because our Kansas-grown popcorn can be found in stores. Maybe it’s because we have a presence on social media or because it’s a catchy name. It might also be the fact that we have been open and willing to share our family’s farming story in the past.

Whatever the reason, growing popcorn has allowed us to connect with many young learners in recent years.

We recently welcomed two large groups of children out to the farm specifically to show them our popcorn operation. We walked them through our popcorn business, showing them the steps in the journey to getting our popcorn growing in a field to ultimately getting our popcorn into someone’s kitchen.

The planning for these groups began last spring shortly after the popcorn had been planted in the ground. It was difficult to determine when the best time would be to visit a popcorn field in the fall given a variety of factors like weather and harvest.

Sometimes we have harvested our popcorn as early as Labor Day weekend. Other years it’s been closer to October.

Ultimately, we decided on our date, put it on the calendar and made sure that they all knew that we might need to make adjustments.

It’s rained a lot this summer, which has delayed the start of harvest so the original date worked. School-aged children from around our county made their way out to our farm to learn all about the popcorn business.

We took them out into a field to show them the differences between popcorn and field corn. We talked about different varieties of popcorn. We went through some of the planting requirements, irrigation needs, the growing season, pollination and harvest.

The kids got to hand shell popcorn and took moisture readings right in the field just like we do to determine when the popcorn is ready to be picked. They discovered the popcorn needs to dry down just a bit more to fit within our tight moisture percentage allowances.

We took them inside to show them the steps taken once we receive an online order or a phone call from one of our bulk poppers. They watched as we bagged popcorn and got orders ready to ship that day. They even helped us test quality control standards by snacking on some freshly popped popcorn as well.

These young learners were attentive and curious and they asked fantastic questions. And they now know a local farmer they can reach out to when they have additional inquiries.

It was fun to share our family’s popcorn story with our visitors. And while they came specifically to learn about our jumbo mushroom popcorn, I’m convinced they all went home knowing a little more about not just our family’s farming story but a lot more about agriculture in general.&nbsp;

INSIGHT KANSAS FARM BUREAU: Kernels and connections

Poor Elbridge Gerry. He wasn’t even a fan of this. 

Toeing his party’s line, he approved a newly drawn Boston district that was lampooned as a mythological menacing-winged dragon, or salamander.&nbsp;

While a salamander-shaped district helped his party hold onto the legislature, this Bill of Rights father lost his governor’s seat, and forever lent his name to unsavory contorted lines re-drawn for partisan political gain&nbsp;

Thus, gerry-mandered maps were born. Power, perils, and all.&nbsp;

213 years later, partisan gerrymandering is having another moment. No less than nine Republican-led and Democrat-led states, including Kansas, are actively contemplating rare mid-census map changes to congressional districts ahead of next year’s elections; salamanders, pinwheels, Zorros, inkblots, and other odd shapes that only a Rorschach Test giver could love will determine control of the U.S. House.&nbsp;

While partisan politics is gratuitously on display in today’s efforts, what is less apparent is what line on a map best serves a representative democracy.&nbsp;

Creation of districts for the House of Representatives was fueled by a fear of tyranny under the constitution; a compromise in our federalist framework that ensured local voices could check the power of a new centralized federal government and president.&nbsp;

But it wasn’t just about the fear of a king’s tyranny or an elite few. Just as important was to prevent a tyranny of the majority. Minority rights in religion, political parties, property, press, commerce, ancestry, etc. had to withstand a majority’s trampling if the newfound freedoms were to mean anything.&nbsp;

To that end, lines on House maps reflected non-partisan coherent geographies of common interest that could elevate the influence of minority groups politically. They represented fisherman, farmers, coalminers, mountain regions, religions, racial/ethnic neighborhoods, and any sub-set of population geography brought together.&nbsp;

Natural boundaries – city/county limits, rivers, major roads, rail, mountains, public universities, etc. – bonded those interests instead of political party. Within those geographies of common interests, political parties vied to become the voice of those interests through ideologies and lawmaking.&nbsp;

But we don’t live in that world anymore, do we?&nbsp;

Unless states say otherwise, splitting geographies of common interest for pure partisan gain is legal after Rucho v. Common Cause (2019). Most states, including Kansas, do not prohibit the practice.&nbsp;

AI mapmaking algorithms can spit out thousands of district options in the blink of an eye. Flipping 10%-20% (25% in Kansas) of a state’s congressional seats at the touch of a button is an intoxicating power unlike any other tool available that stacks the partisan deck.&nbsp;

In this world, parties have become the common interest; not people, natural resources, schools, local economies, drinking water, or air sheds. The political tail wagging the proverbial geographic dog. A shape that ironically comes to mind when looking at the gerrymandered Kansas congressional district 1 barking from Lawrence to Colorado.&nbsp;

Left to current devices, it doesn’t. Johnson County beware. In Kansas, state voters are not in charge. Legislators are. Courts to a degree. Even the last protected domain under the Voting Rights Act – racial gerrymandering – has a target on its back (Louisiana v. Callais).&nbsp;

What do we really want out of re-districting? Competitive races? Partisan fairness? Respect for common geographies? All three? Technology can map whatever weighted parameters “we” want.&nbsp;

But until voters in Kansas and other states send a message, “we” are all racing to the bottom lampooning the very foundations of a representative democracy.

A shape that ironically comes to mind when looking at the gerrymandered Kansas congressional district 1 barking from Lawrence to Colorado.&nbsp;Where does this end?&nbsp;Left to current devices, it doesn’t. Johnson County beware. In Kansas, state voters are not in charge. Legislators are. Courts to a degree. Even the last protected domain under the Voting Rights Act – racial gerrymandering – has a target on its back (Louisiana v. Callais).&nbsp;What do we really want out of re-districting? Competitive races? Partisan fairness? Respect for common geographies? All three? INSIGHT KANSAS: Lines on a map: A race to the gerrymandered bottom

Jennifer and I sell lamb at the farmers market in Manhattan. Yes, it is a great way for us to sell our lamb, but what I enjoy the most is interacting with the consumers who buy our lamb. I take considerable pride in the meat we produce and in sharing it with the end user.

As good as that all is, this is also a chance for me to advocate for agriculture and, in some small way, to help dispel some of the myths about how we produce food. It’s not always easy, and I am not always successful, but it is important to try and get the truth out.

A couple of weeks ago a gentleman stopped at our booth and expressed interest in purchasing lamb, but first he had a question. He asked if we used pesticides on our farm. I told him we do, and they are a valuable tool in our toolbox.

He then told me he was not interested in buying any meat because it would have pesticide on it. I explained we follow all safety precautions including re-entry and grazing exclusion times. That was not good enough for him, and I could not convince him our meat was free of pesticide residue no matter what evidence I presented to him.

In the end I chalked my interaction up to the old adage of “you can’t win them all.” However, that does not mean you should not try. In the end we had a very civil discussion, but he would not be swayed by the evidence. Thankfully, there are many other customers who do believe me.

I also had a customer ask me if my meat was free of hormones and antibiotics. I told them, first, that there are no added hormones I could give sheep so that is not a concern. Moreover, I told them that we are in regular contact with our veterinarian and follow the label guidelines on the antibiotics we do give our lambs.

I told the customer we use as few antibiotics as possible, but when my sheep are sick, I want to treat them with the best possible medicine. The health and wellbeing of our sheep is one of the top concerns on our farm. I also said that we are very conscious of proper use of antibiotics because we want them to remain effective for our sheep as well as ourselves.

In this instance I was successful and made the sale. As farmers and ranchers, we need to make sure we take our time and explain to consumers what we do and why we do it. Farmers and ranchers are among the most trusted professionals, and we need to make sure we use this trust to dispel bad information that consumers are constantly bombarded with.

We may not always be successful but that does not mean we should not keep trying to tell our story every chance we get. We’re not going to win every conversation, but I believe we can win most of them. Each consumer we do educate is one more friend of agriculture — and we need every friend we can get.

INSIGHT KANSAS FARM BUREAU: Selling lamb and agriculture

West of Salina, on the way to Colorado, I saw them for the first time, towering over the plains, their immense blades turning in slow rhythmic circles.&nbsp;

I was excited to see them, their sheer size awe inspiring.&nbsp;

My excitement, however, mixed with concern as the giant machines changed the quiet vastness of the open prairie into something commercial, even industrial.&nbsp;

Twenty years later, having passed by hundreds more – they’ve multiplied at a startling pace – my feelings about them haven’t settled. Fifty-one utility scale windfarms are now scattered across 36 counties, most west of Wichita but more appearing in the northeast and southeast regions. Wind developers require forty to seventy acres per turbine. Farms with a hundred or more turbines thus span thousands of acres. There are nearly 4,500 turbines ranging from 213 ft tall to the hub, 323 ft with blades 323 ft, at the state’s first wind farm in Gray County, to newer models reaching 374 ft to the hub, 514 ft with blades, at Prairie Queen in Allen County.&nbsp;

For reference, the Kansas State Capitol Building is 304 ft, the Statue of Liberty 305 ft. Wind power accounts for 47 percent of the state’s electricity, a dramatic rise from less than 20 percent a decade ago.&nbsp;

More wind power means less coal and natural gas. It also means compensation for landowners and employment opportunities for area residents. Plus, wind farms support local communities through taxes, supplying counties with steady&nbsp;

income to improve infrastructure and fund schools. And compared to traditional sources, wind energy delivers cheaper electricity.&nbsp;

Wind farms divide communities, separating those who profit from those that do not. They cause heated disputes over zoning laws, especially setback requirements, noise levels, and environmental compliance. Other concerns include light pollution, property values, shadow flicker, transmission lines, and rural aesthetics.&nbsp;

I get it, renewable energy takes on a different meaning with a turbine whirling nearby. To paraphrase a Douglas County resident: “I’m for clean power projects, just put them somewhere else.”&nbsp;

NIMBYism (not in my backyard) is a real barrier to wind expansion, especially in the populated eastern counties.&nbsp;

In response to a permit request, Franklin County enacted a temporary moratorium on wind development. Douglas County residents successfully lobbied for more stringent regulations that stalled a windfarm proposal. Shawnee, Harvey, and Linn counties have recently banned wind projects. About a fifth of Kansas counties prohibit new wind installations, many in sensitive areas of the Flint Hills. Governors from both parties have issued executive orders to protect Flint Hills from wind developers. The Trump administration’s recent efforts to slow wind power introduces further complications, likely politicizing what had been a nonpartisan issue in Kansas.&nbsp;

Currently, the fragmented system of local regulations enables developers to capitalize on the financial vulnerabilities of counties and landowners.&nbsp;

Perhaps statewide standards could lead to a more equitable distribution of wind power’s impacts. Yet limiting local control raises its own set of thorny issues.&nbsp;

I am still awed by the turbines and still unsettled. I wonder how many is enough. How tall will they get? Where will they go?&nbsp;

Chances are development stays west, and in places Kansans rarely visit but where in fact the burdens of wind energy are felt the most.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Mixed Emotions about wind turbines? You are not alone

As we fire up the grills and enjoy a well-deserved long weekend, it’s worth remembering that Labor Day honors labor unions and workers across the country for their grit, ingenuity, and tireless efforts that have strengthened and helped build the entire nation.

The first Labor Day started on &nbsp;September 5, 1882. Early Gilded Age workers began the fight for fundamental rights, including the eight-hour workday, the weekend, grievance policies, and other benefits such as vacations, sick leave, unemployment insurance, workers' compensation, the Family Medical Leave Act, and an end to child labor.&nbsp; As labor unions flourished, income inequality fell, and a “Great Levelling” of middle-class growth occurred. However, starting in the 1970s, labor union membership weakened, and the “Great Levelling” began to slip away, resulting in a decline of the middle class over the past 50 years.

Today, pay&nbsp;gaps are widening.&nbsp; In 2024, Fortune Magazine reported that the CEO-to-worker&nbsp;pay&nbsp;ratio ballooned 12.9%, from 560:1&nbsp;in 2019 to&nbsp;632:1 for the 100 largest low-wage employers. This indicates that CEOs, on average, earn significantly more than typical workers, and it is more than double the S&amp;P 500 average ratio of 285-to-1.

The “only effective answer to organized greed is organized labor,"&nbsp;according to former labor leader Thomas Donahue,&nbsp;and there have been some notable victories for workers in the last several months. Minimum wage laws have increased in some states&nbsp;to reflect the rising cost of living better; however, a significant wealth gap persists between union and non-union workers. Union workers’ wages have increased by 10-20% more than those of non-union workers. They also own more homes compared to non-union workers and have better retirement plans.

However, significant challenges and a renewed assault on fundamental worker protections are present. Aggressive anti-union campaigns are on the rise. There are also efforts to change the criteria for classifying workers as independent contractors, which could make it easier for companies to reclassify employees and strip them of benefits and protections, such as minimum wage and overtime.

We often take Labor Day for granted.&nbsp;As we reflect on Labor&nbsp;Day,&nbsp;the fight for workers' rights is never truly over.&nbsp;It is an ongoing effort that requires constant vigilance and collective action to&nbsp;honor and achieve Lincoln’s vision of “a more perfect Union,” and fully realize the promise of liberty and equality.&nbsp; "If any man tells you he loves America, yet hates labor, he is a liar. OPINION: Labor Day of reflection and resolve

What inspires me, as the president of Fort Hays State University, is the impact of our students, faculty, and staff. What I love about Elle Hutchinson’s story is how it embodies the essential traits we relish at FHSU. Elle is a determined contender, an inspired innovator, and a caring individual. Elle’s journey in higher education has been nothing short of remarkable.

Elle shared that Fort Hays State University (FHSU) was the perfect fit for her when choosing a university. Growing up near Hays and engaging with FHSU alumni allowed her to appreciate the institution's value. Elle shared with me that the decision was ultimately grounded in affordability, the transferability of her credits from Barton Community College (BCC), and her desire to remain close to family.

Elle graduated with her associate’s degree from BCC, graduating with highest honors, just a week before she walked across the stage at Great Bend High School, a unique achievement that pushed the boundaries of what she thought was possible.

Like FHSU, BCC is very student-focused. When the leadership at BCC learned about Elle pursuing her high school diploma and her associate's degree simultaneously, they worked with Elle to create and promote a program designed to facilitate an academic pathway for other high school students. That spirit of innovation, of always blazing a new path, is precisely what FHSU is all about.

The challenge of pursuing two degrees simultaneously truly motivated Elle. She wanted to challenge herself, push beyond conventional boundaries, and set an exemplary trajectory for her educational experience. Hearing how other high school students benefited from the initiative Elle helped establish strengthened her resolve and motivated her to keep moving forward.

Managing coursework from two institutions (Great Bend High School and BCC) came with several obstacles. “I encountered skepticism from peers and guidance counselors who doubted my ability to succeed. However, this motivated me to seek assistance from those who believed in my potential. I found that surrounding myself with encouraging support systems was crucial.”

Maintaining balance among the demands of work, academics, and personal life is another skill Elle developed. Balancing her commitments meant focusing weekdays primarily on work and studies. This sometimes involved finding creative ways to integrate schoolwork into her social time, ensuring she could enjoy life while fulfilling her responsibilities. Through it all, Elle’s priority was always to remain close to family and friends.

Elle carried that philosophy with her to FHSU, where she served on the Student Government Association, holding several leadership roles, and as a student assistant in the Office of Student Fiscal Services. While at FHSU, she majored in Business Education – Corporate Communications. She chose this major for its versatility in the real world, plus its helpfulness in pursuing a legal career.

“Law has long been a field I aspired to enter, primarily due to its versatility and my passion for helping others. An attorney can do almost anything; they are not confined to just practicing law. Additionally, there is a lot of variety within the practice of law,” Elle shared

Elle is interested in agricultural law. Last summer, she interned at Bauer &amp; Pike Law Firm in Great Bend, which solidified her interest in the legal field and introduced her to the complexity and balance built into our legal system. She also benefited greatly from this real-world learning experience and from the dedicated mentorship she received.

Another pivotal experience for Elle was her employment as a student worker in the Student Fiscal Services office at FHSU. “I engaged with a team that shared professional guidance, and we became lifelong friends.” Working in Student Fiscal Services opened Ellie’s eyes to the available financial resources available to help keep the Fort Hays State experience affordable. She learned about many different scholarships that helped reduce the cost of tuition for her at FHSU. She also gained a heightened awareness of the financial resources that exist to make the next step in her academic career, law school, more affordable.

Staying focused on her academic and career goals often required establishing a balance in the demands for her time to ensure she still maintained a social life, which always remained important to her. “I believe that healthy interaction with friends can enhance productivity. Though I prioritized homework, I ensured that I scheduled social activities to maintain my mental health. This kept me motivated. There were many times when I had to make a tough decision to stay in and study rather than go out. You have to be willing to make sacrifices.”

Elle credits her achievements to her family. “They supported me through the good, the bad, and the ugly. I cannot imagine trying to do all of this without such amazing parents, support systems, and role models.”

Elle credits her remarkable success to her father, Shawn Hutchinson; her mother, Jamie Hutchinson; her BCC advisor, Karen Kratzer; the student fiscal services staff; and Dr. Wendy Rohleder-Sook, FHSU chairman of the department of communication studies, law, and political science. She is also grateful for the mentorship of Judge Charles Pike (Great Bend Municipal judge) and Julie Carroll, attorneys at the Bauer and Pike Law firm, where she interned last summer.

Additionally, there is a lot of variety within the practice of law,” Elle sharedElle is interested in agricultural law. Last summer, she interned at Bauer &amp; Pike Law Firm in Great Bend, which solidified her interest in the legal field and introduced her to the complexity and balance built into our legal system. She also benefited greatly from this real-world learning experience and from the dedicated mentorship she received.Another pivotal experience for Elle was her employment as a student worker in the Student Fiscal Services office at FHSU. “I engaged with a team that shared professional guidance, and we became lifelong friends.” Working in Student Fiscal Services opened Ellie’s eyes to the available financial resources available to help keep the Fort Hays State experience affordable. She learned about many different scholarships that helped reduce the cost of tuition for her at FHSU. She also gained a heightened awareness of the financial resources that exist to make the next step in her academic career, law school, more affordable.Staying focused on her academic and career goals often required establishing a balance in the demands for her time to ensure she still maintained a social life, which always remained important to her. “I believe that healthy interaction with friends can enhance productivity. Though I prioritized homework, I ensured that I scheduled social activities to maintain my mental health. This kept me motivated. There were many times when I had to make a tough decision to stay in and study rather than go out. You have to be willing to make sacrifices.”Elle credits her achievements to her family. “They supported me through the good, the bad, and the ugly. I cannot imagine trying to do all of this without such amazing parents, support systems, and role models.”Elle credits her remarkable success to her father, Shawn Hutchinson; her mother, Jamie Hutchinson; her BCC advisor, Karen Kratzer; the student fiscal services staff; and Dr. Wendy Rohleder-Sook, FHSU chairman of the department of communication studies, law, and political science. She is also grateful for the mentorship of Judge Charles Pike (Great Bend Municipal judge) and Julie Carroll, attorneys at the Bauer and Pike Law firm, where she interned last summer.With her current studies completed, including a FHSU bachelor's degree earned with honors, she is taking a gap year before pursuing law school. In the interim, she is working in her family-owned small business, Satellite Pros &amp; Central Plains Security, and has recently accepted a position as a media consultant for Barton County.As we celebrate Elle’s achievements, let us also recognize the spirit of those who support our students, from faculty to family. Together, we forge paths for the future, inspired by stories like Elle’s that remind us of the impact we can have in our communities.
