My husband and I are raising four wonderful children, two of whom were born with permanent hearing loss. When we learned our children would need hearing aids, we discovered quickly that private insurance in Kansas does not cover pediatric hearing aids.
No parent should ever worry whether they can afford the medically necessary device that allows their child to hear their teacher in the classroom or laugh with friends on the playground.
After connecting with a small group of Kansas moms who are raising children with hearing loss, we decided it was time to advocate for change. We began searching for a legislator who would be willing to champion this issue for Kansas children and families.
I reached out to Representative Steven Howe to see if he would be willing to help support our mission.
Like many others, Representative Howe was shocked to learn that insurance does not cover pediatric hearing aids and immediately let us know that he wanted to help Kansas kids. Rather than simply listening, Representative Howe took action. He helped us introduce House Bill 2677 during the 2026 legislative session.
While the bill unfortunately did not advance in the House this year, we have not given up!
We remain committed to our mission and are grateful for Representative Howe’s willingness to stand with families like ours. His commitment to listening, learning, and advocating for Kansas children gives us hope that this legislation will one day become law.
For families like mine, this isn’t about politics—it’s about making sure every child in Kansas has the opportunity to hear, learn, communicate, and thrive.
Every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential, and hearing should never depend on a family’s ability to pay.
