Geraldine “Gerrie” Bernice Nichols was born on June 8, 1928, the daughter of John W. &amp; Daisy Alva (Moss) Hull, in Wichita, Kansas and she passed away on June 30, 2020, at the age of 92, in Harrah, Oklahoma.

Geraldine married Morris E. Nichols on August 26, 1950 in Wichita, and to this union, they were blessed with three children. &nbsp;Geraldine worked as a travel agent for Braniff Airlines and a homemaker during her lifetime. Morris’s career took them to Henderson, KY and Ridge Manor, FL until his retirement.&nbsp; In 1992 they settled in Franklin, N. C., where they enjoyed their life in the mountains. &nbsp;They also enjoyed traveling for many years in their RV visiting Canada and 41 of the United States.&nbsp; After Morris’s death, Gerrie returned to the town she loved when they were first married, Belleville, KS.&nbsp; She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Belleville. Gerrie spent her final years residing in Oklahoma to be near her cousin Molly Reid.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Morris of 58 years, and her five year old daughter, Kathy Ann. She is survived by her sons, Michael Nichols (Shari) of Wakefield, MA, and Stephen Nichols (Anna) of Archbold, OH. &nbsp;Geraldine is also survived by her grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Thomas, Joshua and Matthew John, her sister-in-law Ruea Reed of Boulder City, NV, and her cousin Molly Reid of Edmond, OK, other nieces, nephews and friends. A special thank you to Harrah Nursing Center and Centennial Hospice for taking care of Gerrie in her final months.

Donna J Gasswint, 83, passed away Monday, July 6, 2020 in Abilene. She was born June 9, 1937 in Manchester, the daughter of August and Grace (Rector) Steinborn. 

Parents and siblings preceded her in death. 

On December 18, 1961 she married Roy Gasswint. All their married life was spent in Abilene. They were married 51 years when he passed away. 

She had worked at the telephone office in Manchester and as a maid at Preim's Pride in Abilene. 

Donna is survived by her daughters Lori (Scott) Wiley of Detroit KS, Dayna (Brad) Shaffer of Salina KS, Nita Dalton of Salina KS and her son Roy (Lisa) Gasswint of Abilene KS. 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. 

Donna had donated her body to the KU Medical School.

Mr. Barrett passed away Saturday, July 18, 2020 at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina. He was born October 14, 1936 in Niles the son of Mike and Stella (Murphy) Barrett. He graduated from high school in Atchison, Kansas and attended seminary school and K-State. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, served in the Army-Air corps reserves and was a lifelong Niles area farmer and rancher. On February 27, 1960, Tom was united in marriage to Janice Hersh in Salina. Survivors include his sons Tommy and wife Kathy Barrett and Mark Barrett all of Niles, and four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife on July 28, 2008, his brother Mike in 1990, and his parents. Mr. Barrett’s final resting place will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery near Solomon. A Parish Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the church. Friends may sign the register book from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and after 6:00 pm at the church. He was born on November 12, 1954, in Smith Center, KS, the son of Perry Bernard and Sylvia Eloise “Peggy” (Marshall) Heitkotter. He graduated from McPherson High School in 1973. Greg served in the United States Army in the 82nd Airborne Division. &nbsp; Craig Ernest Applebee, 65, of Wichita, Kansas, passed away at 3:59 p.m., Thursday, July 16th, 2020 suddenly at his residence. Craig was born in McPherson, Kansas on September 11, 1954, a son of Robert A. and Margaret Yvonne (Folsom) Applebee. Craig attended Roosevelt grade school, McPherson Junior High School and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas in 1972. He then attended the Salina Police Academy, Salina, Kansas. He served in the U.S. Navy. Through the years Craig worked as a security officer for many agencies in Kansas. Craig enjoyed drawing, riding his Harley-Davidson, reading, crossword puzzles, listening to music and spending time with his friends and family. Craig Ernest Applebee was united in marriage to Gwen Rose Barnhart in McPherson, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in Hutchinson. This union was blessed with the birth of two daughters, Elisa and Tiffany. He is survived by his daughters, Elisa Applebee, of McPherson, Kansas and Tiffany Hinson, of McPherson, Kansas; his siblings, Angie Applebee-Drew and her husband Ron Turner, of Omaha, Nebraska, Allen Applebee and his wife Darlene, of Lady Lake, Florida, Gary Applebee and his wife Rosemary, of Union, Mississippi and Kent Applebee and his wife Sharon, of Concordia, Kansas. He was a high school shop teacher, coach, and also owned and operated Yoder Lawn &amp; Tree Care. In his younger years, he worked as an aide at the Menninger Foundation in Topeka. He was born September 22, 1935, in Elkhart, Indiana, and his parents were Lawrence and Viola (Sparks) Yoder. He graduated from high school in International Falls, MN and then attended Hesston College in Hesston, KS. Norman earned his Master’s Degree in Counseling from Emporia State Teacher’s College. He served as guidance counselor at Leon High School and Assaria High School. On August 17, 1956, Norman was united in marriage to Carolyn A. Johnston in Hesston, KS. They have made their home in Lindsborg since 1969. He was a member of the Lindsborg Covenant Church, the Kansas Mennonite Men’s Chorus, and sang in the Messiah chorus. Survivors include: his wife, Carolyn of the home; two sons, Steven Yoder (Ellen McCord) of Cheney, KS and Thomas Yoder (Natalie Clarke) of Dayton, NV; four grandchildren, Tim Yoder (Lisa), Austin Yoder (Heather), Tamela Yoder (Doug Wingfield), and Isaiah Yoder (Zohra BenBrahim); six great-grandchildren, Haylee McAneney, Kayden Yoder, Caleb Yoder, Lilli Yoder, Lexi Yoder, and Archer Yoder; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Yoder of Goshen, IN. Virgil E. "Pete" Oborg, 87, of Overland Park and formerly of Smolan, passed away Monday, March 30, 2020. He was born October 20, 1932 in Smolan to Phillip and Mabel (Anderson) Oborg.

Pete was baptized and confirmed at Salemsborg Lutheran Church, Smolan, and later in life served on the church board. He was a graduate of Smolan High School. Pete was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a Sergeant during the Korean War. He was a lifelong farmer, dairyman, and stockman, and served on the Board of Farmers Union Coop. He served on the first Smolan city council after it was incorporated in 1962. After retiring from farming, Pete and Norma moved to Salina where they resided until moving to Overland Park in 2018.

He is survived by: his wife, Norma (Weddle) Oborg; daughters, Marty Whitaker (Scott) of Carrollton, Texas, and Shelley Lierz (Steve) of Overland Park, Kan.; sister, Delores Anderson (Eyler) of Salina; and grandchildren, Britta and McKenna Whitaker and Brady and Sydney Lierz.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Wayne Oborg; and sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Guy Cypher.

Christy Johns Pennington, 52, of Salina, found her wings on Saturday, July 18, 2020. She was born December 18, 1967 in Minneapolis, Kan. She married her soulmate Brett on June 26, 1993.

Christy fought a courageous battle with the love and support of her family.

She was the office manager at Pennington Chiropractic Center and the beloved mother to her three kids.

She is survived by her husband, Brett; her children, Alexandra, Trent, and Olivia; her father, Cliff; two brothers, Les (Barb) and Brian (LuAnn) of Minneapolis; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mom, Pat, and niece, Nichole.

Our family will be forever grateful for the generosity of the Salina Community.

Christy Johns Pennington

Jimmie Ray Hardy, 73, passed away Monday, July 13, 2020. He was born July 22, 1946 in Lyons to William and Susie (Wedel) Hardy.

He worked and retired from Kaw Pipeline in 2000 as an oilfield worker, and also worked at Lowe's for several years. His hobbies were fishing and being outdoors. Every year he would plant a garden with the hope he would get a homegrown tomato by the fourth of July. He was a member of the Thursday Night Cruisers of Salina, and loved to cruise around in his classic cars. He enjoyed going to car shows and visiting. Nobody was a stranger to him.

Jimmie is survived by: wife, Carolyn Hardy of Salina; son, Travis Hardy and wife Denise of Edgerton.

Cremation was chosen and a celebration of life will be at a later date.

He was born July 22, 1946 in Lyons to William and Susie (Wedel) Hardy.He worked and retired from Kaw Pipeline in 2000 as an oilfield worker, and also worked at Lowe's for several years. His hobbies were fishing and being outdoors. Every year he would plant a garden with the hope he would get a homegrown tomato by the fourth of July. He was a member of the Thursday Night Cruisers of Salina, and loved to cruise around in his classic cars. He enjoyed going to car shows and visiting. David Wayne Odell, 56, of McPherson passed away Monday, June 22, 2020 at his home in McPherson.  David was born August 11, 1963 in Concordia, KS to Ronald and Phyllis (Hammer) Odell.  

David was a 1981 graduate from Marquette High school, then attended Fort Hays State University.  He married Kimi Haigh of Lindsborg at Freemount Lutheran Church on April 11, 1987, and to this union were born three children: Kristin, Derek and Madi.

David was an assembly technician at Exide Battery in Salina for 25 years.  He made many friends while working at Exide, as well as throughout his lifetime.  David was known for his storytelling, pranks, and his love for his children and the outdoors…and of course, the Kansas State Wildcats and Kansas City Chiefs!

David is preceded in death by his nephew: Owen Odell.

He is survived by his parents: Ronald and Phyllis (Hammer) Odell of Lindsborg, KS; children: Kristin Martin (Eric) of Lindsborg, KS; Derek Odell (Bethany) of Moundridge, KS; and Madi Odell (Alex Peterson) of Lindsborg, KS; sister: Flo Jones (Pete Ma'Afala) of Lindsborg, KS; brothers: Rick Odell (Amanda Luttig) of Lindsborg, KS, and Rodger Odell of Lindsborg, KS; grandchildren: Kasyn Martin, Emori Martin, and Wiley Odell; as well as several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

&nbsp; Eva Jonelle John (Joey), 64, passed away at 1:00 am., Friday, July 17th, 2020 suddenly at her residence. Joey was born August 28, 1955, a daughter of Alda Mae Swenson and Frank Donald Beagel. Joey worked for a variety of companies during her life, most recently as a caretaker for a local healthcare organization. She enjoyed having pets and keeping contact with extended family while taking delight in cooking, fishing and reading. But most of all she was fond of spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandkids. She is survived by her three sons, Jason, Jarrod and Shilo and their respective families. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Kale, Madison, Mackenzie, Aleena and Rylee. Joey was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Don Beagel, Penny Beagel and Randy Beagel. This union was blessed with six children, RLou, Beverly, Robert, Bradley, Ronald, and Bryan. Beatrice Zavala91, passed away early Thursday morning, July 16, 2020, at her home in Salina in the company of her sons.

She was born April 7, 1929 and raised in Eldorado, KS by her parents Jose and Virginia (Ruiz) Alejos. She married her husband, Angel in 1959,

Those who knew her will always remember her smile, her laugh and her good nature. She was loving to all people and strangers and always ready to help in any way possible. She would interpret Spanish for those that didn't speak English and drive them around to get whatever they needed. She helped with the church and her faith was strong sharing to others her belief. She loved talking to children, playing with them and babysitting them. She had many friends and enjoyed long chats on the telephone with them. She loved her husband and was constantly by his side when they went to movies, dinners or even ride along with him on his route.

In her later years she succumbed to Alzheimer's but it never affected her good nature. Those who saw her would still get a smile and laugh from her and she remained loving until the end.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings, Mary P. Valadez, Willie Alejos, and Paul Alejos. She is survived by her sons Frank and John Zavala, granddaughter Martina Benjamin (Brant) and great grandson Aidan, all of Salina, plus her nieces and cousins throughout the U.S.

Melvin was a lifetime resident of Ellsworth County where he was a farmer and rancher. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He married Grace Elizabeth Gravino in Kanopolis on November 11, 1961. He was a longtime member of the St. Ignatius Catholic Church of Kanopolis.

Melvin is survived by his daughter, Lisa McQuade (Cary Ruark) of Wichita, KS; son, Phillip Arensman (Susan) of Wichita; and grandsons, Zachary and Andrew Arensman. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Grace in 2006; brothers, Everett “Phil”, Paul, and Eugene Arensman; and sister, Stella Riemann.

Leonard Joseph Cameron Jr. was born November 24, 1930 in Clyde, Kansas to Leonard Fredrick Sr. and Lena (Girard) Cameron. &nbsp;Leonard grew up in Clay Center, Kansas. He married Charlene Sterrett on March 16, 1952. She preceded him in death on November 7, 2007. Leonard owned and operated an automotive business in Manhattan before moving to Washington state. There he worked as a construction foreman for Snelson’s until retiring and moving back to Kansas in 2003. He later married Thelma Thomas on February 2, 2009. Leonard was a member of Brotherhood of Electric. He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Belinda Sue Cameron; brother, Gene Cameron; and sisters, Mary Williams, Lyla Green, and Lorene Wilford. It was Leonard’s wishes for cremation to take place with no services to follow.

He is survived by a sister Linda Kay Sullivan (Russell) of Solomon, son Ryan Harrison (Stephanie) Hope and a daughter Rhiannon Harrison of Spokane, WA as well as many beloved family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother Gary.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday July 31 from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Hope Community Center. Inurnment will be at a later date.

Doug was born to William "Bill" and Lila (Jury) Harrison on October 6, 1958 in Herington KS. Much of his childhood was spent in the Hope and Enterprise communities. Doug graduated from Chapman High School in 1976. He briefly attended Cowley County Community College to study Law Enforcement but changed paths to work in the automotive industry mainly as an auto parts salesman and at times a mechanic. In 1997 Doug opened his own store in Hope and continued to operate it until his departure.

Doug accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior around 2004 and became a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church of rural Abilene.

Doug was an avid gun collector and book reader as well as a gunsmith and was very knowledgeable in many areas of life. He was a lifelong member of the NRA.

Doug enjoyed shooting and reloading and just sitting around trying to find ways to solve the world's problems with friends. He will surely be missed by all who knew him.

Darlene Worcester, 89, of Americus, Kansas passed away July 15, 2020 at Flint Hills Care Center.&nbsp; She was born April 16, 1931, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Clark) Belt.&nbsp;

Darlene married Orville Worcester on June 4, 1950.&nbsp; They made their home in Americus, where they raised their family.&nbsp; Darlene was a member of Country Side Baptist Church and Americus Senior Citizens.&nbsp; She enjoyed gardening, canning and sewing.&nbsp; She loved her family and very much loved spending time with her grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Orville, and 3 brothers: Richard, Kenneth and Glen Belt, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Darlene is survived by her sons: Orvin Worcester, of Emporia and Laryl Worcester, of Americus; 4 grandsons: Casey, Brandon, Tyler and Levi Worcester; granddaughter Kristi Gadino; 11 great grandchildren: Coby, Camden, Cadin, Cayson, Braylee, Beckham and Slater Worcester, Hunter Haynes, Alex, Kelsie and Nicole Gadino; and 3 great great grandchildren.

Mary Darlene Worcester

Donna's life began on September 21, 1932 in Marion.&nbsp; She was the daughter of Orville and Clara (Gaunt) Miesse.&nbsp; Donna was baptized in 1944 at the Marion Christian Church. Growing up on a farm with only her brothers as playmates, Donna was a tomboy.&nbsp; She grew up loving horses and riding them was her greatest passion.&nbsp; In the summer, Donna helped around the house, worked in the garden, gathered eggs, and milked cows.&nbsp; Saturdays in town was a chance to have fun while her mother sold eggs and cream.

&nbsp; Taking lessons on the trumpet and piano instilled a passion for music.&nbsp; Donna also took voice lessons and she dreamed of becoming a professional singer.&nbsp; She was a 1950 graduate of Marion High School and attended Emporia State University.

&nbsp; Donna was united in marriage to James R. Fruechting on October 16, 1955 in Marion and they built a good life over 53 years of marriage.&nbsp; The couple lived in Washington DC briefly after being married while Jim completed his military service, then they moved to Marion where they resided on several farms, where they raised cattle and chickens.&nbsp; They moved to town after buying the hardware store and built two houses in Marion.

&nbsp;She was a lifelong member of the Marion Christian Church and involved in all aspects of church including CWF president, program chair and treasurer.&nbsp; Donna guided the Worship and Scholarship committees for many years.&nbsp; She sang in the choir and served as choir director.&nbsp; Donna taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School regularly and served as the President of the Neo-Century Club for many years.&nbsp;

Donna worked for Marion High School and Farmer's and Drover's Bank after high school.&nbsp; She loved accounting and worked for her sister Dorothy Varenhorst as the bookkeeper for Van's Clothing Store for many years.&nbsp; When Donna and Jim bought the Marion Hardware and Gift Store in 1975, she continued to manage the business accounting as well as buy china, crystal, and appliances for the store.&nbsp; Donna also loved giving microwave cooking classes.&nbsp;

Donna's children, grandchildren, and extended family members were her favorite pastime, she was always interested in their current activities and accomplishments.&nbsp; Playing the piano, singing, reading, embroidery, crocheting and knitting were also her favorite with many baby afghans and pillowcases as treasured gift.&nbsp; Donna's favorite activity was to cook for her family, church dinners and bake on Saturday mornings.&nbsp; She made the best cinnamon rolls, bread, cookies and of course, cake for Jim.&nbsp; Donna travelled with Jim to many state fairs to sell gooseneck trailers when Jim worked for Hillsboro Industries.&nbsp; They had a lake home in Bella Vista Arkansas while the girls were growing up allowing them to take short vacations away from the farm.&nbsp; Other favorite trips took them to Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Spain.&nbsp; Jim and Donna enjoyed collecting depression and other antique glassware.&nbsp; One of Donna's all-time favorite activities was to play pinochle for hours on end with her brothers and extended family.&nbsp;

Her loving family includes her children Claire (Ross) Meredith, Sue (Tim) Nyberg, and Pat (Bill) Waswick, all of Wichita; grandchildren Ashley Meredith, Ryan (Melisha) Meredith, Megan (Jeff) Kimmel, Paul Enns, Clayton, Adrienne, and Madison Chamberland; great grandchildren Lydia, Matthew, Judah, and Melody Meredith and Alec Kimmel; &nbsp;her brothers Bill (Mary) Miesse of Collierville, TN, J. B. ( Carol) Miesse of Marion; brother in law Dwight (Donna) Fruechting of Clarksville, TN and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Donna passed away on July 15, 2020 in Wichita.&nbsp; She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Marvin Miesse and sister Dorothy Varenhorst, granddaughter Carrie Meredith and many beloved brothers in law and sisters in law and cousins.&nbsp;

Sister Geraldine Milke died July 16, 2020, at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, KS.&nbsp; She was 88 years old and a Sister of St. Joseph for 69 years.&nbsp; She was born in Hays, KS on July 7, 1932, to Joseph and Caroline Rohleder Milke, the youngest of five children, and was baptized Geraldine Agnes.&nbsp; She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, KS on February 14, 1951.&nbsp; On August 15, 1951, Geraldine received the habit of the Sisters of St. Joseph and was given the name Sister Constance, later changing back to her baptismal name.&nbsp; She pronounced first vows on August 15, 1952 and final vows on August 15, 1955.

Sister Geraldine received a diploma in Nursing from Marymount College, Salina, KS in 1955.&nbsp; She worked in hospitals staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Belvidere, IL, Atwood, Concordia, Salina, and Manhattan, KS; and Grand Island, NE; retiring to Nazareth Motherhouse in 2006.

Austin D. Sommerfeldpassed away on Monday July 13, 2020. He was born July 23, 1997 in Salina, KS to Mark Sommerfeld and Patricia Smith.

Austin truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures, spending time with friends and family, and a love for dogs, four-wheel drive trucks, and fishing.

He is survived by his father, Mark Sommerfeld; his mother, Patricia Smith; his three sisters, Natasha Lujan, Jessica Barta, and Allyssa Smith; his paternal grandmother, Katherine Sommerfeld; his maternal grandmother, Cindy Hoover; his aunt and uncle, David and Connie Sommerfeld; his uncles, Bob, John, Michael, Chris, and Nick Hoover; eight nieces and nephews; and 12 cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Bob Sommerfeld and his maternal grandfather, Ron Hoover.

Valosta Joy Beets, 93, of Salina, passed away July 11, 2020. Joy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Survivors include sons Terry (Lynn) Beets and Rick Beets; grandchildren Joel Beets, Jason Beets, Emily (Mat) Padilla, and Ryan Beets; and great-grandchildren Lincoln Padilla and Alek Beets.

Valosta Joy Lemen was born Sept. 28, 1926, the daughter of Ray Lemen and Nellie (Johnson) Lemen, in the small town of Lemons, Missouri. Joy reflected fondly on her childhood growing up in Lemons during the Great Depression.

Joy married the love of her life, Wallace "Wally" Beets, Dec. 6, 1947, in Wichita.

Joy and Wally Beets were longtime residents of Salina. Wally Beets worked as a golf professional at the Salina Country Club, where both Wally and Joy would often play.

They were married for 56 years until Wally passed away Nov. 10, 2004, at the age of 81.

Joy enjoyed playing games with her grandchildren and playing bridge with her friends. She also enjoyed cooking, reading, crosswords, and jigsaw puzzles.

Joy maintained connections with friends and family throughout her life.

Due to health risks from the coronavirus pandemic, no memorial service will be held.

Alberta attended Steuben Elementary School and was a 1949 graduate of Mankato High School. She was a 1950 graduate of Brown Mackie School of Business in Salina, Kansas.

She married Hank Henry Diamond on August 15, 1951 at the Mankato Christian Church. He preceded her in death on December 21, 1992.

Alberta worked from 1950- 1951 at Rural Electric, and was a bookkeeper at Beardmore Motors from 1954-1955. She later worked at the Dreamliner Motel from 1973-1976 and also at the local Frontier Café. Alberta also worked for Kramer Furniture and Melby Mortuary until retiring in 1992.

Her memberships include the Mankato Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School, played the Piano, and made Church Bulletins, she also volunteered at the Senior Citizens Center and delivered meals on wheels, and was a longtime member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.

Alberta is survived by her 3 daughters, Belinda Kneisler, Hoyt, KS; Denise (Robert) Kneisler Mayetta, KS, Pamela Kramer (Kenneth), Goff, KS; son, John (Jay) Diamond, Holton, KS; 11 grandchildren, Kenneth Kneisler, Bridget Fulkerson (Jason), Clinton Burger, Jason Ross (Amy), Kelly Kneisler, Darby Kneisler (Kristin), Kyle Kramer (Krista), Brittney Quelch (Jason), Bethany Ohlsen (Robert), Brooke Callaway (Bryan Randa), Kaitlyn Dunn (Nick); 21great-grandchildren and two on the way; 2 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry, parents, Clifton and Lillie Dunn, 4 sisters, Faye Braden, Beulah Dunn and Audrey Coffman and Neva Maag.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 21, 2020, with Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Monday, July 20, 2020, with the family receiving friends from 6-8 pm all at the Melby Mortuary, Mankato.
