Jack Wayne Davis, 87, of Salina, passed away Saturday, November 28, 2020 at home with family. Jack was born July 23rd, 1933 in Esbon, KS to parents Floyd and Alta "Lorene" Davis.

He attended Emporia Teachers College his freshman year in high school where his father was getting his master's degree. They moved to Salina when he was a sophomore and graduated from Salina High School and Brown Mackie Business College. He worked at School Specialty Supply for 25 years and was retail manager and served one term as president of Salina Downtown Merchants. He owned Korner Store and Korner Stereo in downtown Salina in the late 1970's. He retired in 2003 from Dillard's. Jack was a type 1 diabetic for 85 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Jack Milleson.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years, Barbara; a son, Tim, of the home, and son, Greg (Angie) of Salina; sister-in-law Shirley Milleson of Salina; grandchildren Zack (Jamie) Davis of Kansas City, Alexys (Nick) Neuburger of Salina, LaCrista Brightbill (Jeremy) of Salina, Cole Brightbill (Jess) of Overland Park; great grandchildren Ally Mae and Adalyn Neuburger of Salina. He was also grandpa to Alex, Kyle, Wyatt, and Beckett Rector, and Lacie Bohn. Jack was a loving husband, father, and grandpa. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were very special to him.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 3rd from 5-7 pm at Ryan Mortuary with the family receiving friends from 5-6 p.m. A private funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, December 4th at the University United Methodist Church. The service will be streamed on the church Facebook page. Burial will follow at the Salemsborg Cemetery, Smolan. Masks and social distancing will be required.

Memorials may be made to University United Methodist Church where he was a member for 72 years.

Lois Jean Haug

Keith L. Brumbaugh, Ada, was born to Harry and Julia (King) Brumbaugh on October 16, 1939, on the family farm between Ada and Tescott where he was the 15th&nbsp;of 16 children.&nbsp; He graduated from Ada High School and served in the Army.&nbsp; A resident of Ada, he worked construction and retired from KDOT.&nbsp; Keith was a lifelong coyote hunter with a love for the greyhounds he raised.&nbsp; He was well known in the area as a master horseman.&nbsp; He made a home with his wife Karen who is left to mourn him along with children, Linda, Sheila, Bill, and Shawn; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three sisters; and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Uncle Nicholas; his beloved son Greg; and 13 brothers and sisters.&nbsp;

He passed form this Earth on Wednesday November 25, 2020 at the age of 81 from numerous health issues and complications of Covid-19.&nbsp; A memorial will be held at a date to be determined in the spring.&nbsp; Memorials may be made to the Keith Brumbaugh Memorial Fund (to be determined) and mailed to Wilson Family Funeral Home, P.O. Box 166, Minneapolis, KS 67467.&nbsp; He is at rest at the Franklin Cemetery in Tescott.

Anita White Lysell passed away November 25, 2020.  Anita was born on October 18, 1940 to Anna Nelson White and Earnest Ralph “Bob” White in McPherson, KS. She graduated from McPherson High School in 1958 and from McPherson College in 1962. She was an elementary school teacher in Salina for one year. On June 30, 1963 she married John Lysell. We were blessed with the birth of Lori on November 17, 1964.

Anita taught in Wichita while attending night school at WSU and earned her Master’s degree in 1967. She worked as a substitute teacher during the years that Lori was growing up. She ended her teaching career in the Goddard school system teaching children to read.

Grandson Blake was born in 1990 and Anita enjoyed a lot of time with him during his younger years. She taught him to read and frequently helped him with homework assignments.

Anita and John loved to travel and toured in over forty-five countries. They visited Denmark-Norway-Sweden five times and saw the areas that their grandparents left to come to America. Their longest trip was in 2010 and included Germany, South Africa, and Zambia over seven weeks. Their last long trip included tours in northern Italy, Turkey, Ukraine, and Greece.

Anita had been an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She especially enjoyed helping in the children’s ministry. She had been very active in the Scandinavian Society, Knife and Fork club, Friends of the Wichita Art Museum, AFS, and Shephard’s Center. She had also been a member of several other organizations……….Wesley Friends, Studebaker Drivers Club, Avanti Club, etc.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and elementary school teacher. She will be greatly missed by her husband John, daughter Lori Teeter and son-in-law Darrin Teeter, her grandson Blake Teeter, cousin Billy Berg, and several other cousins and many friends. 

There will be visitation on Saturday, December 5, at Crick-Christians Funeral Home at 103 North Washington Street in Lindsborg, KS. 10:00 – 12:00 am.

A graveside memorial service will begin at 1:00 pm at Elmwood Cemetery east of Lindsborg. 

Memorials may be given to Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Wichita, KS, or to the Kansas Food Bank.

&nbsp; Peabody - Arlene Ruth Penner was born on June 21, 1931, in Hillsboro Kansas, to Peter (P.H.) Penner and Marie Schroeder. 

She attended Schlehuber School, and Hillsboro High School, graduating in 1949.

She married Roy E. Unruh, on August 17, 1950, at First Mennonite Church, Hillsboro. To this union, they had three children, Cynthia, Marilyn, and Duane. 

Arlene was a hard worker, starting with Hillsboro Refrigerated Locker where Roy was manager. Later she worked at Peter Pan and Hillsboro Elementary Cafeteria. 

In March of 1967 Roy and Arlene purchased Seibel Sausage House in Peabody, renaming it Peabody Sausage House. They did custom slaughtering and processing for 27 years. They also started Unruh Catering, doing banquets, dinners, luncheons, and auctions. Arlene also started making a family mustard recipe, labeled Grandma’s Homestyle Mustard. 

They both retired in 1994. Roy passed away in 2011.

Arlene was active in her church and community. As a young girl, she joined First Mennonite Church, Hillsboro, and after moving transferred to United Methodist Church, Peabody. She served on committees at First Mennonite Church, United Methodist Church, and Peabody Senior Center where she later served as Site Manager. She helped initiate the Peppernut Project fund raiser at First Mennonite Church to benefit the Sunday School Department and Peabody Senior Center.

Arlene’s mother passed away when she was age two. Her father, with the assistance of his sisters, continued to raise Arlene on the farm, West of Hillsboro. She spent a lot of time, playing with her Cousin Willis Penner, who lived just down the road. When at her house, they played with dolls, and when at Willis’ they played with trucks. 

She helped her Dad on the farm with chores for livestock and his prize Ayrshire Cattle that he took to cattle shows, taking lunch to him in the field, and riding along taking grain to the elevator in Lehigh on the wagon and horses. Her father later married Clara Pankratz in 1936, she was a home maker and schoolteacher, and died in 1953 in Colorado while on vacation. Then her father married Rosa Kim in 1957, a home maker and schoolteacher, and she died in 1974. Her father Pete Penner died in 1971.

Duane, married and has two children, a son Travis (Alicia), and a daughter Larissa Frisbie (Joshua). Duane later married Cyndy Stout. Great-grandchildren include Caleb, Samantha, Carson, Jayden, Taylor, Remington, Emilynn, Carter, Rhett, Cameron, and Baylor.

Arlene’s hobbies and activities included 4-H for herself, a 4-H leader for her children and grandchildren, sewing, baking, growing flowers, gardening, camping, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She collected all types of Santas, making Christmas her favorite holiday.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Marie Penner, stepmothers, Clara and Rosa, her husband Roy, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Private Burial will be at Prairie Lawn Cemetery, Peabody.

Nancy Nading, 84, of Concordia, passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Mt. Joseph Senior Village, Concordia.&nbsp; Nancy was born on June 27, 1936 in Okmulgee, OK to Carl &amp; Opal (Crocker) Reitz.&nbsp; She married Dallas E. Nading on Sept. 5, 1954 at the Methodist church in Bartlett, KS.&nbsp; They moved to Concordia following their marriage.

Nancy was employed by KNCK Radio for a number of years.&nbsp; She then worked at Dreilings Department Store before being employed by Cloud County Community College in the Community Education Department from which she retired after 20 years.

Nancy will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband, Dallas, Concordia; children, Brad Nading, Garden City; Jennifer Rodvelt (Steven), KC, MO; 4 grandchildren, Scott Nading (Taylor), Manhattan; Kayla Nading, Garden City; and Tyler and Grant Rodvelt of KC and 2 great grandchildren, Owen &amp; Cashton, Manhattan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and 3 siblings, Dick, Betty &amp; Kaye.

Nancy Nading

Dorothy Belle Lowman Swenson, 96, went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 28, 2020 at the home of her daughter-in-law.

Dorothy was born to the late Willard and Florence Lewis Lowman on July 1, 1924 at 10:30 am in the upstairs bedroom of their home on W13th Street Concordia, KS.&nbsp; She graduated 8th&nbsp;grade at the Sibley School in 1938 and Concordia High School in 1942. She attended Kansas State University for one year. Dorothy was employed the POW Camp Hospital Supply Office from August 1943 until December 1944.&nbsp;

Dorothy met the love of her life, Leonard, at age 14, though at that time they were just acquaintances who became friends as their paths continued to cross.&nbsp; In 1945, while attending Kansas State University, Leonard returned from the South Pacific and proposed.&nbsp; Dorothy and Leonard were married in the Concordia First United Methodist Church on October 7, 1945.&nbsp; In April 1946, they purchased 40 acres of property on the edge on town.&nbsp; They shared a beautiful life together on this property for 58 years.&nbsp;&nbsp; During their marriage they had one son, Phillip. &nbsp;They devoted their lives to farming and had a grade A dairy operation for many years. &nbsp;Dorothy remained the Farm Financial Manager of the Swenson Centennial Farm until her passing.&nbsp; Dorothy loved God and always had a Bible on the table beside her.&nbsp; She was a life long member of the Concordia First United Methodist Church.&nbsp; She assumed leadership roles over the years including Active District Missionary Work.&nbsp; She was an avid lifelong reader and a member of the Mystery Book Club at the Frank Carlson Library.&nbsp; Dorothy was a wonderful storyteller and was always willing to share memories of life in Concordia such as her first employment at a law firm making $25/month or the joys and struggles of life on a farm in KS. &nbsp;

 </figure>Dorothy Belle Lowman Swenson, 96, went to be with her Lord and Savior on November 28, 2020 at the home of her daughter-in-law. Dorothy was born to the late Willard and Florence Lewis Lowman on July 1, 1924 at 10:30 am in the upstairs bedroom of their home on W13th Street Concordia, KS.&nbsp; She graduated 8th&nbsp;grade at the Sibley School in 1938 and Concordia High School in 1942. She attended Kansas State University for one year. Dorothy was employed the POW Camp Hospital Supply Office from August 1943 until December 1944.&nbsp; Dorothy met the love of her life, Leonard, at age 14, though at that time they were just acquaintances who became friends as their paths continued to cross.&nbsp; In 1945, while attending Kansas State University, Leonard returned from the South Pacific and proposed.&nbsp; Dorothy and Leonard were married in the Concordia First United Methodist Church on October 7, 1945.&nbsp; In April 1946, they purchased 40 acres of property on the edge on town.&nbsp; They shared a beautiful life together on this property for 58 years.&nbsp;&nbsp; During their marriage they had one son, Phillip. &nbsp;They devoted their lives to farming and had a grade A dairy operation for many years. &nbsp;Dorothy remained the Farm Financial Manager of the Swenson Centennial Farm until her passing.&nbsp; Dorothy loved God and always had a Bible on the table beside her.&nbsp; She was a life long member of the Concordia First United Methodist Church.&nbsp; She assumed leadership roles over the years including Active District Missionary Work.&nbsp; She was an avid lifelong reader and a member of the Mystery Book Club at the Frank Carlson Library.&nbsp; Dorothy was a wonderful storyteller and was always willing to share memories of life in Concordia such as her first employment at a law firm making $25/month or the joys and struggles of life on a farm in KS. &nbsp; She is preceded in death by her parents Willard and Florence Lewis Lowman; husband Leonard N. Dorothy Belle Lowman Swenson

Charles "Chuck" Johnson, 79, passed away, November 25, 2020,at Bethany Home after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. Chuck was born October 9, 1941, in Salina, Kansas, to Kenneth and Grace (Bengtson) Johnson. He graduated from Assaria High School, earned his B.A. from Bethany College, and M.B.A. from Kansas State University. He married Monette Burnison in 1965 and celebrated their 55th anniversary in June.

Chuck was the owner of Johnson's Elevators and later was a wheat marketing specialist for AgriPro/Syngenta. He received many awards and held leadership positions in the Wheat Industry. A retirement highlight was a wheat named in his honor "CJ," featuring a logo with Chuck's signature bucket hat which he wore on his beloved field days. Chuck's greatest joys: his family and friends, music, the Riverfest, and pizza.

He is survived by his wife, Monette; his three daughters, Disa Rice (Scott) of Platte City, MO; Brijin Johnson (Aaron Pepkowitz) of Parkville, MO; Becca Maxwell (Greg) of Ellinwood; three grandchildren; Mya and Mette Maxwell, and Carson Gardner; and step-grandchildren, Abby and Lilly Pepkowitz. He is also survived by his two sisters; Deanna Nelson and JeanAnn Knappenberger (Kurt), and many close relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Marlin Nelson.

Richard Glen Adee, 96, passed away Nov. 26, 2020, at the Good 
Samaritan Center, Ellsworth, Kan.&nbsp; He was born July 11, 1924, in Lamar, 
Kan., to Richard Glendinning and Maude Olive (Baker) Adee.&nbsp; Richard 
married Betty (Krueger) June 4, 1944, in Salina, Kan. &nbsp;After marriage, 
they moved to Clay Center, Kan., then moved to Great Bend, Kan., in 
1950.&nbsp; Betty passed away Oct. 15, 2017.

Richard, a long-time resident of Great Bend, Kan., was retired from 
Hydro-Chem, previously working at Thies Packing as a meat cutter.&nbsp; He 
was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, Great Bend Woodcarvers and a
 charter member of St. Mark Lutheran Church.&nbsp; Richard proudly served his
 country during WW II, in the 41st Infantry, United States Army, 
obtaining the rank of Tech. Sgt.

Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Marie Adee of Manhattan, 
Julia Ann Jilek of Manhattan, Kan., Lynne Weiser and husband Don of 
Salina, Kan.; four grandchildren, Melissa Ivey, Jalen Byford, Laura 
Weiser and Drew Byford; four great grandchildren, Jadrian Henan, Joshua 
Weiser, Cooper Ivey and Cayson Ivey.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his 
parents; one brother, J.B. Adee; and three sisters, Glenys LaQuay, 
Bernys McCoy and Ferne Johnson.

&nbsp; Hillsboro - Alvena Bartel, 94 passed away November 24, 2020 in Hillsboro. She was born July 28, 1926 to John and Florentine (Ratzlaff) Goossen in Goessel. 

She married Wilbert N. Bartel February 7, 1947 at First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro. 

Survivors include: daughters, Dorothy (David) Soldan of Manhattan, Janet Bartel of Manhattan; sons, Wilbert K. “Sonny” (Franceen) Bartel of rural Hillsboro, Wilmer (Marilyn) Bartel of Hillsboro; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Alfred (Donna) Goossen.

Online condolences at www.jostfuneralhome.com Life Sketch Alvena Bartel was born July 28, 1926, to John D. and Florentine (Ratzlaff) Goossen in Goessel, Kansas. Her arrival on a hot day during busy haying season brought great joy to the first-time parents. She soon observed the demands and satisfactions of life on a farm, an experience which prepared her for over 94 years of rural life. The Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War II had lasting impacts on the family which soon included seven children. They found ways to make do with what they had, often limited to what was produced on the farm. Alvena described this as being very little, but always just enough. As the oldest child, she had chores not only outside with the animals and garden, but also in the kitchen and care for her younger siblings. As a teenager, she was available for assistance to aunts and uncles during their busy times, such as a new baby in the family or with cooking and child care during wheat harvests/threshing. She traveled via Greyhound bus to these destinations. This hard work and caring for others became a life-long practice. Alvena’s early education was at Maple Hill and Canada, both Marion County rural schools. She graduated from Hillsboro High School, Class of 1944. Although she lived only five miles from the high school, she rented a room from a family in town because her family had only one vehicle for transportation and farm use, and war-time rationing limited available resources. Her father brought her to town early Monday morning, then returned late Friday afternoon for her travel home. For spending money she worked part-time as an egg candler for a local grocer and egg processor. Her record of high academic achievement served as preparation for independent life-long learning through reading to satisfy a genuine curiosity for a broad range of topics. Free or restful moments found her with book in hand. Her favorites were history, biography, world events, and biblical studies. If time was available, she generally read one or more books each week. She was an avid reader until a few months before her passing. An interest for sewing developed during her high school years. She had learned basics from her mother, but having an instructor challenged her to a higher level and presented her with ongoing satisfaction for both construction and gifting throughout her life. Her four children recall how diligently she worked during summer months to be certain each had five new dresses or shirts to begin the school year. Additional garments were crafted for special occasions. Later she transitioned her creativity to hand embroidery and piecing quilts. Over the years she hemmed, stamped, and embroidered hundreds of tea towels, usually in sets of seven. Likewise, hundreds of yards of fabric were cut in precise pieces, arranged, and stitched into quilt tops. Her definite favorites were scrappy quilts of all shapes and sizes, with fabrics carefully curated for color themes and overall appearance, sometimes for specific recipients. She gifted generously to family, extended family, and those with need. How blessed we are to hold these cherished items. She entered her handwork and quilts in the county and state fairs and earned numerous championship purple and blue ribbons. If possible, she avoided entering in “senior citizen” categories because she was interested to learn whether her work as a person in her 70s, 80s, or 90s was competitive with that of younger and more educated or accomplished entrants. She spent winter months preparing her items and by springtime had them ready for entry in July and September. Of interest, she had finished items for the 2020 county and state fairs, but these events were cancelled due to COVID-19. She was encouraged by high school teachers to pursue further education but there was not a financial pathway to follow this option. Her interests would have been for teaching or medical work. Instead, after graduation she was employed in the high school office. One of her tasks was the daily delivery and receiving of school mail/parcels at the train depot (in the area where the Hillsboro Post Office is currently located). The “doodle-bug” made a prompt but brief mid-afternoon stop so one of her assignments was to be on location for the drop-off and pick-up, but be away from the office for the minimum time possible. Alvena reported running from the high school to the depot with the out-going delivery, then accepting the incoming delivery and running back to the high school within a time of 25 minutes. She said she tried to shorten her time but could do this only if there were no out-going items, the “doodle-bug” was exactly on time or a bit early, and there were no items for pick-up. Now we understand how she was a fast and energetic worker. Alvena married Wilbert N. Bartel on a cold and snowy February 7, 1947, at the First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro, where both were life-long members. They were acquainted for several years through school and church, but it wasn’t until they were high school seniors when Wilbert found an opportune moment to locate her lab coat and tie it in knots, which made her almost late to chemistry class. This really got her attention, and set the stage for what would become the beginning of another family story. After graduation, Wilbert fulfilled a World War II alternative service requirement. Then after discharge he returned to the family farm southeast of Hillsboro. They married and farmed together for 67 years before Wilbert’s death in November 2014. Alvena remained independent in her farm home until July 2020. Four children were born to Alvena and Wilbert: Dorothy, “Sonny” (Wilbert K.), Janet, and Wilmer. The farm became lively with children who loved the outdoors and opportunities for pets, their play and care. We had assigned tasks and spent many hours working with our parents and eventually independently doing the work of the farm. Each one of us grew up capable of being “farmers” but only their two sons chose to pursue farm related interests as their life work. We agree Mom’s favorite farm animals were the chickens. The large flocks of laying hens received superior care and rewarded Mom with grand and reserve champion trophies for eggs entered in competitions at the state poultry and egg shows in 1957, 1958 and 1961. Mom taught us to be gardeners, caretakers for farm animals, the yard, and generally to make ourselves useful and flexible for whatever needed to be accomplished, including to plan the use of our time. She led by example and encouragement, then gave us ample opportunity to observe, learn, and participate. This extended to household skills. A bountiful garden was produced, preserved, consumed and/or shared. In addition we were encouraged and supported to develop our own interests, and to perform well the options we selected. There was time for all the play and work we needed to do. Life on a small acreage farm was financially tough most times, but from a child’s perspective this did not cause uncertainty as we were loved and affirmed in many ways, most of which were centered on being together and working together as a family. Mom was a gentle person, a welcoming and gracious hostess with generous time to spend with family or visitors who stopped by. She was also a keeper of family records and stories and was consulted to identify or verify information, which she readily shared. For several generations of the Bartel family, the farm is known as their “home place”. Likewise for the Goossen family, this farm was near enough to their roots, so became a frequent stopping place. Another reason extended family liked to stop at our farm was because our entire family was fluent with the Low German dialect and spoke it daily (still do), and this was of interest to them either to hear it, or join in conversation. After her four children were adults and away from home, Mom decided to get a “town job” in addition to her work on the farm. She trained to be a Certified Nurse Aide, then a Certified Medication Aide and worked for 12 years as a CMA in a nursing home. We wondered how she had energy to do all this, but she did it. We think she even trained the farm animals to her schedule. Her farm work was finished prior to reporting for her evening shift at the nursing home. As in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren joined the family, Alvena added a whole new level of love and generosity to share with her growing family. She kept the cookie jar fresh and full, made extra batches of her tasty cinnamon rolls, always offered home cooked meals and lots of time for interactions, and of course she made special quilts. Some of her young grandchildren were “town children” so she did her best to introduce them to both the amazing responsibilities and adventures of farm life. Holidays and gatherings of the generations at the farm were unique and highly anticipated. The week before Christmas Alvena and Wilbert spent evenings making buckets full of popcorn balls, only to see them quickly disappear in a delicious experience when the children and grandchildren arrived. Likewise, birthdays and other traditions were celebrated at the farm. All were joyous times. Mom had prepared to make them the best. Early Summer 2020 Alvena expressed concern for her declining strength related to advancing heart failure. She desired to remain in her own home so her children increased their assistance to facilitate her wishes. However, in July she began an extended hospital stay followed by admission to long-term health care. While there, she continued her sincere interest in her family. She looked forward to hearing about all of them. At age 94 she wondered why life was so short, and reflected her life was full of satisfaction and gratitude. Her strong faith in Christ demonstrated and shared throughout her lifetime continued to grow and sustain her even as she prayed fervently and waited patiently for His call to eternal life. Her prayerful desire was granted early morning, November 24, 2020. Graveside service and burial was on November 25, 2020, Haven of Rest Cemetery, adjacent to the Bartel family farm, Hillsboro Kansas. Her father brought her to town early Monday morning, then returned late Friday afternoon for her travel home. For spending money she worked part-time as an egg candler for a local grocer and egg processor. Her record of high academic achievement served as preparation for independent life-long learning through reading to satisfy a genuine curiosity for a broad range of topics. Free or restful moments found her with book in hand. Her favorites were history, biography, world events, and biblical studies. If time was available, she generally read one or more books each week. She was an avid reader until a few months before her passing. An interest for sewing developed during her high school years. She had learned basics from her mother, but having an instructor challenged her to a higher level and presented her with ongoing satisfaction for both construction and gifting throughout her life. Her four children recall how diligently she worked during summer months to be certain each had five new dresses or shirts to begin the school year. Additional garments were crafted for special occasions. Later she transitioned her creativity to hand embroidery and piecing quilts. Over the years she hemmed, stamped, and embroidered hundreds of tea towels, usually in sets of seven. Likewise, hundreds of yards of fabric were cut in precise pieces, arranged, and stitched into quilt tops. Her definite favorites were scrappy quilts of all shapes and sizes, with fabrics carefully curated for color themes and overall appearance, sometimes for specific recipients. She gifted generously to family, extended family, and those with need. How blessed we are to hold these cherished items. She entered her handwork and quilts in the county and state fairs and earned numerous championship purple and blue ribbons. If possible, she avoided entering in “senior citizen” categories because she was interested to learn whether her work as a person in her 70s, 80s, or 90s was competitive with that of younger and more educated or accomplished entrants. She spent winter months preparing her items and by springtime had them ready for entry in July and September. Of interest, she had finished items for the 2020 county and state fairs, but these events were cancelled due to COVID-19. She was encouraged by high school teachers to pursue further education but there was not a financial pathway to follow this option. Her interests would have been for teaching or medical work. Instead, after graduation she was employed in the high school office. One of her tasks was the daily delivery and receiving of school mail/parcels at the train depot (in the area where the Hillsboro Post Office is currently located). The “doodle-bug” made a prompt but brief mid-afternoon stop so one of her assignments was to be on location for the drop-off and pick-up, but be away from the office for the minimum time possible. Alvena reported running from the high school to the depot with the out-going delivery, then accepting the incoming delivery and running back to the high school within a time of 25 minutes. She said she tried to shorten her time but could do this only if there were no out-going items, the “doodle-bug” was exactly on time or a bit early, and there were no items for pick-up. Now we understand how she was a fast and energetic worker. Alvena married Wilbert N. Bartel on a cold and snowy February 7, 1947, at the First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro, where both were life-long members. They were acquainted for several years through school and church, but it wasn’t until they were high school seniors when Wilbert found an opportune moment to locate her lab coat and tie it in knots, which made her almost late to chemistry class. This really got her attention, and set the stage for what would become the beginning of another family story. After graduation, Wilbert fulfilled a World War II alternative service requirement. Then after discharge he returned to the family farm southeast of Hillsboro. They married and farmed together for 67 years before Wilbert’s death in November 2014. Alvena remained independent in her farm home until July 2020. Four children were born to Alvena and Wilbert: Dorothy, “Sonny” (Wilbert K.), Janet, and Wilmer. The farm became lively with children who loved the outdoors and opportunities for pets, their play and care. We had assigned tasks and spent many hours working with our parents and eventually independently doing the work of the farm. Each one of us grew up capable of being “farmers” but only their two sons chose to pursue farm related interests as their life work. We agree Mom’s favorite farm animals were the chickens. The large flocks of laying hens received superior care and rewarded Mom with grand and reserve champion trophies for eggs entered in competitions at the state poultry and egg shows in 1957, 1958 and 1961. Mom taught us to be gardeners, caretakers for farm animals, the yard, and generally to make ourselves useful and flexible for whatever needed to be accomplished, including to plan the use of our time. She led by example and encouragement, then gave us ample opportunity to observe, learn, and participate. This extended to household skills. A bountiful garden was produced, preserved, consumed and/or shared. In addition we were encouraged and supported to develop our own interests, and to perform well the options we selected. There was time for all the play and work we needed to do. Life on a small acreage farm was financially tough most times, but from a child’s perspective this did not cause uncertainty as we were loved and affirmed in many ways, most of which were centered on being together and working together as a family. Mom was a gentle person, a welcoming and gracious hostess with generous time to spend with family or visitors who stopped by. She was also a keeper of family records and stories and was consulted to identify or verify information, which she readily shared. For several generations of the Bartel family, the farm is known as their “home place”. Likewise for the Goossen family, this farm was near enough to their roots, so became a frequent stopping place. Another reason extended family liked to stop at our farm was because our entire family was fluent with the Low German dialect and spoke it daily (still do), and this was of interest to them either to hear it, or join in conversation. After her four children were adults and away from home, Mom decided to get a “town job” in addition to her work on the farm. She trained to be a Certified Nurse Aide, then a Certified Medication Aide and worked for 12 years as a CMA in a nursing home. We wondered how she had energy to do all this, but she did it. We think she even trained the farm animals to her schedule. Her farm work was finished prior to reporting for her evening shift at the nursing home. As in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren joined the family, Alvena added a whole new level of love and generosity to share with her growing family. She kept the cookie jar fresh and full, made extra batches of her tasty cinnamon rolls, always offered home cooked meals and lots of time for interactions, and of course she made special quilts. Some of her young grandchildren were “town children” so she did her best to introduce them to both the amazing responsibilities and adventures of farm life. Holidays and gatherings of the generations at the farm were unique and highly anticipated. The week before Christmas Alvena and Wilbert spent evenings making buckets full of popcorn balls, only to see them quickly disappear in a delicious experience when the children and grandchildren arrived. Likewise, birthdays and other traditions were celebrated at the farm. All were joyous times. Mom had prepared to make them the best. Early Summer 2020 Alvena expressed concern for her declining strength related to advancing heart failure. She desired to remain in her own home so her children increased their assistance to facilitate her wishes. However, in July she began an extended hospital stay followed by admission to long-term health care. While there, she continued her sincere interest in her family. She looked forward to hearing about all of them. At age 94 she wondered why life was so short, and reflected her life was full of satisfaction and gratitude. Her strong faith in Christ demonstrated and shared throughout her lifetime continued to grow and sustain her even as she prayed fervently and waited patiently for His call to eternal life. Her prayerful desire was granted early morning, November 24, 2020. Graveside service and burial was on November 25, 2020, Haven of Rest Cemetery, adjacent to the Bartel family farm, Hillsboro Kansas. Jamie Leah Glahn, 51, of Gypsum, KS, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 27, 2020, surrounded by family at her home in Gypsum. She was a labor and delivery nurse at Salina Regional Health Center. Jamie was born on October 8, 1969, in Manhattan, KS, the daughter of Robert Edward and Linda Jo (Hellebust) Scheopner. She graduated from Herington High School in 1988. She went on to study at Kansas State University and received a Bachelor’s of Nursing from Baker University in 1992. On August 8, 2001, Jamie was united in marriage to Gary Dean Glahn in Roxbury. She was a member of Roxbury United Parish. Survivors include: her husband, Gary; three daughters, Megan Satran (Curtis) of WaKeeney, KS, Paige Nurnberg (Brett) of Spring Hill, KS, and Becca Glahn of Gypsum, KS; a granddaughter, Laurel Satran and a grandson on the way; a sister, Beth Mauer (Shayne) of Topeka, KS; mother-in-law, Mary Ann Glahn of Gypsum, KS; and many extended family and friends. Robert “Bob” H. Hudson, 80, passed away Saturday, November 28, 2020 in Little River, KS. He was born on June 13, 1940 to Leonard M. and Alva (Henderson) Hudson in Ellsworth County at the farmstead of the Faris Caves located between the 60 foot sandstone bluffs and the Smoky Hill River. He worked at a number of jobs including Beech Aircraft in Salina, Ellsworth Co-op in Kanopolis, a number of years producing hogs east of Kanopolis, and as a seasonal at Kanopolis Lake, but the most enjoyable was raising Percheron draft horses on his farm east of Kanopolis.

Bob is survived by his high school sweetheart and best friend, Judy (Armstrong), for over 60 years. They married on August 6, 1960. He is also survived by his children, Monte Hudson, Connie Evans (Richard Modrow), Tim Hudson, and Diane Rojas (Vincent) all of Kanopolis; ten grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Martha Myers and Eunice Shrull.

One of the things throughout life that Bob was fond of saying, which was true, before he ever asked Judy out, he said to her brother Dick, “I’m going to marry your sister.” She was a sophomore at the time. And because he said it to him, he felt he better follow up on it.

Ruth worked for American Greeting Cards as a merchandiser for over 26 years.&nbsp; She married Arlan B. Doyle on Jna. 25, 1969.&nbsp;&nbsp; He preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1997.&nbsp; She was a member of the Concordia American Legion Aux.

She is survived by her sons, Steve, Norton &amp; Jim, Brighton, CO; sister, Helen Ham, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada; brother, John McMahon, Cayuga, Ontario, Canada; grandchildren, James, MacKenna, Shanna, Owen &amp; Dylan Doyle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlan; her parents and a sister, Marie Douglas.

SALINA -&nbsp;Dixie Lee Brown, 82, Salina, Kan., passed away on November 20, 2020. She was born to Donald and Jaunita (Milleson) Spunaugle on October 23, 1938, in Salina.

Dixie was self-employed for many years and continued to run her business (Brown's Bookkeeping) until she passed. Dixie enjoyed gardening, growing roses, collecting cowboy boot memorabilia, and was always helping others. She loved people, especially her family, and never knew a stranger. Dixie was known by many for her time working at the Carousel, Sale Barn, Hickory Hut, and Payne Oil Company, as well as being a lifelong member of the American Legion.

Dixie is survived by her five children: Phillip Brown (Sue), Roland Brown (Fe), Lisa VonFange (Rodney), Keith Brown (Joann), and Jon Brown (Lori); twelve grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her life partner Danny Fazel Sr.; her parents; and sisters, Pat and Peggy.

A Celebration of Life will be at Ryan Mortuary on December 5, 2020. Visitation with the family will be from 2 to 5 p.m., immediately followed by a small service and sharing of memories.

He is the son of Roy and Ruth (Wickwire) Hillis. He married Lorraine Rudolph, Aug. 1, 1964. He served in the US Army from 1963-1969 and after discharge worked with his father's trucking company hauling rock. He continues as a professional truck driver with other companys; Rollie Hankis, Walnut Grove Feeds, and Mail Carriers of Atlanta. He moved to Grand Island, NE in 1984 working for Sunglower/Crete Trucking from 1984-2010; earning recognition for 2 million miles driven.

His wife, Lorraine, died in 2008. Left to cherish his memory are his sons; John Hillis, Jr, Brookville and son, Todd (Deb) Hillis, Grand Island, NE. He has 6 grandkids: Dustin Hillis, Tiffani Hillis (JD Pomplun), Cortnie Hillis, Samantha (Matt) Johnson, Darren Hillis, and Jayden Hillis; 11 great grandkids: Haylee, Emma, Jestani, Nataleeah, Shaelynn, Avanna, Dylan, Blake, Abel, Preston and Rilee; and a sister Anna (Steve) Jicka.

John M. Hillis, Sr.

Patrick Joseph Pfeifer, 57, Salina, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; He was born January 22, 1963 in Concordia KS to C.A. and Eloise (Fraser) Pfeifer.

Patrick grew up on the family farm near Aurora KS and attended school in Miltonvale KS.&nbsp; After an auto accident in 1979, he was unable to complete his high school education, but the school presented him with a diploma the same year his younger brother graduated.&nbsp; Patrick was blessed to have many wonderful caregivers and healthcare professionals who assisted him over the years in managing with his disabilities.

Patrick was preceded in death by his father.&nbsp; He is survived by his mother, Eloise of Minneapolis, his sisters Debbie (John) Herrman of Osborne, Angie (Norman) Vytlacil of Belleville, Yvonne (Thomas) Jefferson of Dry Fork, VA, Janet (Robert) Pahls of Salina and his brothers, Greg Pfeifer, Salina, Doug (Marlene) Pfeifer, Wichita and Charles Pfeifer, Minneapolis as well as 42 nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Patrick Joseph Pfeifer, 57, Salina, passed away Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at Salina Regional Health Center.&nbsp; He was born January 22, 1963 in Concordia KS to C.A. and Eloise (Fraser) Pfeifer.Patrick grew up on the family farm near Aurora KS and attended school in Miltonvale KS.&nbsp; After an auto accident in 1979, he was unable to complete his high school education, but the school presented him with a diploma the same year his younger brother graduated.&nbsp; Patrick was blessed to have many wonderful caregivers and healthcare professionals who assisted him over the years in managing with his disabilities.Patrick was preceded in death by his father.&nbsp; He is survived by his mother, Eloise of Minneapolis, his sisters Debbie (John) Herrman of Osborne, Angie (Norman) Vytlacil of Belleville, Yvonne (Thomas) Jefferson of Dry Fork, VA, Janet (Robert) Pahls of Salina and his brothers, Greg Pfeifer, Salina, Doug (Marlene) Pfeifer, Wichita and Charles Pfeifer, Minneapolis as well as 42 nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.Patrick was cremated and a funeral mass will be held at a later date.&nbsp; Memorials may be made to OCCK or Pinnacle Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and may be mailed to Wilson Family Funeral Home, P.O. Rev. Garner J. Berg, 92, Hays, died Wednesday, November 25, 2020, at HaysMed.

He was born July 15, 1928, the son of 
Joseph R. and Helen F. (Garner) Berg.&nbsp; On July 27, 1946, he was united in
 marriage to Harriet F. Rossow in McPherson, and they celebrated 62 
years of marriage before she preceded him in death on November 25, 
2008.&nbsp; He later married Nancy (Wheatcroft) Stanka.&nbsp; Garner was a United 
Methodist minister, serving for 39 years in United Methodist churches in
 Kansas and Texas, retiring in 1995.&nbsp; In Salina, he served at the Church
 of the Cross.&nbsp; He enjoyed traveling and fishing.

Survivors include his wife Nancy of 
Hays, two sons: Barry Berg of Indiana and Jon Berg of Kansas, and a 
daughter: Brenda-Berg Morrow of New York.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on
 Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at the First United Methodist Church, 
Hays.&nbsp; Burial will be at 2:30 pm in McPherson City Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation
 will be from 4:00 pm until 6:00 on Tuesday at Hays Memorial Chapel 
Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Wednesday at the church.

&nbsp; Charles Daniel "Chuck" Baker, 75, of McPherson, Kansas passed away at 12:01 a.m., Wednesday, November 25th, 2020 peacefully at his residence. Charles was born in Colby, Kansas on October 3, 1945, a son of Albert Preston and Lola Elise (Daniels) Baker. Chuck attended the Monument schools and graduated from Monument High School, Monument, Kansas in 1963. He attended Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas and Bethany College, Lindsborg, Kansas. He also took Continuing Education Classes from Life Bible College. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church Page City, Kansas and later established his membership with Foursquare Gospel Church, McPherson, Kansas. Through the years Chuck managed a Texaco Service Station in McPherson, sold Lifetime Cookware, was a farmer, pastor, coach, owned and operated a lawn mowing business, was custodian for U.S.D. 418, Foursquare Chaplain and retired as Pastor of the New Life Foursquare Gospel Church in 2016. Chuck enjoyed ministering to anyone and everyone. He loved sports, especially KU Basketball, Dodgers Baseball and Kansas City Chiefs. But his favorite thing was spending time with his family. He volunteered at Elyria Christian School and was known as the "Oreo Man". He spent countless summers at camp Pomme de Terre serving however he could while washing thousands of dishes and touching thousands of lives, Charles D. "Chuck" Baker was united in marriage to Marlette "Pinky" Nordstrom on November 7, 1965 in McPherson, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of three children. Charles Jr, "Charlie", Marla, and Candice. Chuck was united in marriage to Andrea Gail Harris on December 29, 1970 in McPherson, Kansas. The couple established their first home together in McPherson. They would have celebrated their 50 year anniversary in a month. This union was blessed with the birth of five children, Danyel, Julie, Alicia, Nathan, and Rachel. He is survived by his faithful wife Andrea Baker, of McPherson; his children, Charlie Baker and his wife Jamie, of Goodland, Kansas, Marla Wartell and her husband Ken, of Aurora, Colorado, Candice Adamson and her husband Kent, of Westminster, Colorado, Danyel Mills and her husband Matt, of Topeka, Kansas, Julie Rohret and her husband Jeremy, of McPherson, Kansas, Alicia Lievense and her husband Jeff, of La Crescenta, California, Nathan Baker and his wife Sarah, of Overland Park, Kansas and Rachel Barnard and her husband Tyler, of McPherson, Kansas; his sister Janyce Hurtt, of Northglenn, Colorado. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren, Maranatha, Seth, Gabriella, Jack, Jake, Balin, Fallon, Lincoln, Knightleigh, Everleigh, and one on the way. &nbsp; Bradley Alan "Brad" Clark, 69, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 5:55 p.m., Thursday, November 26th, while in the company of family members, at his home. Brad was born in McPherson, Kansas on April 25, 1951, a son of Bonita "Bonnie" Mae (Barngrover) and Marvin Duane Clark. Brad attended Roosevelt grade school, Park school, McPherson Junior High and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas in 1969. He was a member of First Christian Church McPherson, Kansas where he was baptized on May 21, 1972. Bradley Alan Clark was united in marriage to Sherri Marie Seckman on September 24, 1977 at the First Christian Church, McPherson, Kansas. The young couple established their first home together in McPherson. This union was blessed with the birth of a son Adam. Brad worked for Kit Manufacturing for two years. Then worked as Payroll, Materials, and Electrician Helper at Dresser Engineering. He worked at Boeing in Wichita, and then returned to McPherson, working for McPherson Energy. He worked at VanGuard Plastics for 18 years. He worked at MCDS as Transportation Manager. He got his Insurance License and sold Life Insurance. He also got his Real Estate License and sold Real Estate. Brad was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 133, was a member of the NRA, was a member of several bowling leagues through the years, was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 24 and American Legion Riders Post 24, and rode several Patriot Guard missions. Brad enjoyed spending time with Adam, was always interested in Aviation and had a private pilot's license. He had an interest in History, enjoyed camping, fishing, target shooting, bowling with his teams through the years, ridding motorcycle's, and Brad loved faith, family, friends, and his dogs. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of over forty-three years, Sherri Clark, of McPherson, Kansas; his son, Adam Clark and his fiance' Katie Pegram, of McPherson, Kansas; his brother, Randy Clark, of Wichita, Kansas; and his two granddaughters, Cierra Clark and Athena Clark; many nephews and nieces, other relatives and a host of friends. Brad was preceded in death by his parents Marvin and Bonnie Clark; a grandson, Everett Joseph Miller. Zelma Aline McMillin died on November 26, 2020 in Wakefield, Kansas. She was born April 10, 1945 in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma to Zelna and Flossie (Lawson) Wilson.. Her family later moved to Hobbs, New Mexico where she graduated from Hobbs High School. Zelma married Frank McMillin on October 4, 1974. He preceded her in death on August 28, 2020. Zelma worked as an Executive Assistant for the Department of Health and Family for several years. She enjoyed gardening, game shows, and had a love for Elvis. Zelma was a very proper woman. She was extremely humble and an amazing mother and grandmother. In addition to her husband, Zelma is preceded in death by her parents; a son, Michael Spray; two brothers, Richard and Larry Wilson and a sister, Betty Trail.

Zelma Aline McMillin

February 26, 1936~November 23, 2020(age 84)

Gail's life began on February 26, 1936 in rural Delavan.  He was the son of Zora "Joker" and Margaret (Sorenson) Burns.  

Gail graduated from Wilsey High School in 1954 and went onto Emporia State Teacher's College to further his education.  

He was united in marriage to the former Carol Say on June 23, 1957 at the Wilsey Christian Church. 

 Gail worked for a short time as a disc jockey in Tennessee and later returned home to the farm where he farmed with his father and later his own family. 

 His true passion was music, and he was in many groups but most notably his band the BJ- 4 Four which played around the region performing Country and Western, Western Swing &amp; old Standards for many years.  Gail was a bass guitar player, sang vocals and played many string instruments. 

 He was very fond of his Boston bulldog Rambo and especially his life of music and agriculture. 

 Gail's greatest joy was his family which includes his wife of 63 years Carol of Delavan; children Dylan (LeAnn) Burns of Edmund, OK, Victor (Gail) Burns of Lincolnville, Doyle (Pam) Burns of Wichita and Vicki (Jason ) Wolf of Medora; grandchildren Tyler Burns, Natalie ( Alex) Marks, Travis (Kayla) Burns, Bridgette (Jesse) Hamm, Jesse Crump, Katie Burns, Dusty Wolf and Dakota Wolf; great grandchildren Ruby Marks, Sawyer Hamm, Chev Reimer, and Braxton Wolf; brother Everett Burns and several nieces and nephews. 

 Gail passed away at his home on November 23, 2020. 

 He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Bernard Burns and great granddaughter Brylee Burns. 

 His family will gather with friends on Friday from 4-8 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Herington where his funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. led by Pastor Clarence Summer.  Gail will be laid to rest in Delavan Cemetery.  Memorial contributions in his name may be directed to Dickinson County Home Health and Hospice.  </figure><h2>Gail C. Burns</h2>February 26, 1936~November 23, 2020(age 84)Gail's life began on February 26, 1936 in rural Delavan. He was the son of Zora "Joker" and Margaret (Sorenson) Burns. Gail graduated from Wilsey High School in 1954 and went onto Emporia State Teacher's College to further his education. He was united in marriage to the former Carol Say on June 23, 1957 at the Wilsey Christian Church. Gail worked for a short time as a disc jockey in Tennessee and later returned home to the farm where he farmed with his father and later his own family. His true passion was music, and he was in many groups but most notably his band the BJ- 4 Four which played around the region performing Country and Western, Western Swing &amp; old Standards for many years. Gail was a bass guitar player, sang vocals and played many string instruments. He was very fond of his Boston bulldog Rambo and especially his life of music and agriculture. Gail C. Burns

Betty Marie (Elmborg) Ritter, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2020, at the age of 91. She was born January 4, 1929, in Lindsborg, the daughter of Arthur and Hanna Mattson Elmborg. Betty's mother immigrated to America, from Sweden and her father was a second generation Swedish immigrant.

Betty was one of 5 children, in the Elmborg family. She grew up on a farm, outside of Lindsborg. Living in a large family with three brothers and a sister during difficult economic times, helped define the values and principles that guided her, throughout her life.

Betty graduated from Lindsborg High School in 1947 and attended Kansas Wesleyan. While attending Kansas Wesleyan, Betty met the love of her life, John Ritter, from Salina. Betty and John were married August 19, 1950, and shared their lives together for more than 60 years, before John passed away January 29, 2011.

Betty was fun-loving and ever the optimist. She was also thrifty, and a hard worker. She worked for many years, as the office manager for Salina Dental Associates and Dr. Harry Jett and enjoyed the relationships she formed there, with staff and patients.

Betty loved her family and her home, on West Ellsworth Street, where she and John lived next door to her sister, Helen Loy, and her husband, Lefty, for more than 35 years.

Betty was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was proud of her family and made each family member feel valued and special. She gave freely of her time and herself. She was always willing to listen, lend support, and roll up her sleeves to pitch-in, whenever and wherever help was needed. She was loved and cherished, in return.

Betty was proud of her Swedish heritage and that fact was reflected, in her Swedish prayer, jokes, and specialty dishes for the holidays that included Ostakaka, Lingonberries, Lutefisk, and more.

Betty is survived by three children, John Ritter III, of Scottsdale, Arizona, James (Martha) Ritter, of Naperville, Illinois, and Teresa (Tom) Martin, of Salina; five grandchildren, Aaron (Jessica) Martin, of Salina, Ryan Ritter, of Naperville, Illinois, Nathan (Lisa) Martin, of Olathe, Daniel (Mariah), of Kansas City, and Molly Martin (fiancee Blake Warren) of Murrieta, California; and five great grandchildren, Hailey, Ella, and Connor Martin, of Olathe, and Oliver and Jack Martin, of Salina.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, her husband, John and the following brothers and sister: Arthur Elmborg, James Elmborg, Richard Elmborg, and Helen Loy.

Due to Covid-19 gathering restrictions and precautions, Betty will be inurned, at a private family ceremony, at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
