Jamie Lee Holloway, 45, of Solomon passed away Monday, July 26, 2021. He was born January 8, 1976 at Camp Pendleton, California, the son of Charles and Susan (Rutz) Holloway. He graduated from Chapman High School in 1994. He later went on to Vo-Tech in Salina as a diesel mechanic. 

Jamie loved riding motorcycles and enjoyed hot rods and racing. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his friends and family. 

Jamie is survived by his parents Charles and Sue Holloway; brother Brian and wife Dawn Holloway of Abilene; two nephews, Tyler and Cooper Holloway; two uncles, Bill Rutz and Mike and wife Ranada Rutz ;as well as numerous cousins and friends. 

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Robert and Anna Holloway and maternal grandparents Willis and Carol Rutz; uncle Robert Jr. Holloway;&nbsp; aunt Bobby Ann Brenton; and his loving dog Daisy. 

Family will receive friends Sunday, August 1, 2021 from 2-5 at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home of Abilene. A memorial service for Jamie will be 9:00 a.m., August 21, 2021 at Browns Memorial Park South of Abilene.

Von E. VanMeter, 70, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2021.&nbsp; He was born in Concordia, KS on March 14, 1951, to Ivan and Lela VanMeter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Vonda Kaye. &nbsp;

Von was married to Alma Dean Johnson and to this union three daughters were born, Vonda (Mike) Hahne, Hastings, NE, Deana (Taitum) Wood, Salina, and Kelli (Shane) Bruce, Phoenix, AZ.

Von is survived by his friend Alma Dean, and daughters Deana and Kelli; six grandchildren, Brandon, Brayden, and Brett Mosher, Kaleb and Peyton Wood, and Cale Bruce; two step-granddaughters, Kylee Boone and Joette Sargent; and five step-great- grandchildren. &nbsp;

Von loved his family, who were the light of his life.&nbsp; He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved all outdoor activities.

Von has chosen to donate his body to the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the KU Medical Center.&nbsp; The family will have a private celebration of life for their beloved father and grandfather. &nbsp;

Mary Ellen (Yoder) Howell, a pillar of the Monitor Church community west of McPherson, KS, entered eternal rest in her residence at the Cedars on July 27, 2021. She was 89 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Wally Howell (2005); their oldest child Mark Harold Howell (2011); and her brother Bob Yoder (1984).

She is survived by Mark’s wife Nancy (Heath) Howell and their two sons, Andrew Joseph and Benjamin Wallace, of Wichita Falls, Texas; her daughter Kathy Howell of Corvallis, Oregon; her son Matthew and daughter-in-law Tina Howell of Greenfield, Massachusetts; and her daughter Amy and son-in-law Jay Warner of rural McPherson, Kansas. She is also survived by her brother’s wife Elsie, their four daughters--Janet, Rebecca, Gail, and Karen--and their families. Mary Ellen was born in McPherson on April 28, 1932, the second child of Dayton and Hazel (Kessler) Yoder, and was raised in the home that she would live in for almost eighty years, less than half a mile south of the Monitor Church of the Brethren in Groveland Township of McPherson County. As a girl, she attended school for eight years in a one-room schoolhouse that she could walk to from her home. While attending McPherson High School in the late 40s, she stayed in town with relatives and friends of the family and graduated at the top of her class in 1950. She went on to McPherson College for her first two undergraduate years and then transferred to Kansas State, where she met Wally on a blind date during their senior year. Mary Ellen graduated summa cum laude from K-State in 1954 with a major in botany. That fall, she began a very short-lived public school teaching career at Conway Springs High School, resigning that position before marrying Wally at the Monitor Church on November 20, 1954. As his new bride, Mary Ellen was able to join Wally when he was sent to Germany as a lieutenant with the U.S. Army. Mary Ellen gave birth to their first child, Mark, at an Army hospital in Würzburg. When the young family returned to Kansas in 1956, Mary Ellen’s parents moved to another farm house a few miles north, so that she and Wally could establish their home where Mary Ellen had been raised, a house built in the early 1900s by the brother of her grandfather, J.J. Yoder. Wally began farming with Mary Ellen’s father, growing wheat and milo on approximately 1000 acres of land. For the first twenty years or so, they also raised livestock: beef cattle, pigs, and chickens. As a mother, Mary Ellen was always there for her four children--Mark (born in 1955), Kathy (born in 1958), Matthew (born in 1962), and Amy (born in 1965)--sending them off to school every day with the parting words, “Mommy loves you, Jesus is near, and don’t forget to be kind.” These essential values were reinforced by Mary Ellen’s devotion to Bible study and prayer at home, as well as her kindness and outreach to neighbors and visitors to Monitor, often inviting them home after church for Sunday dinner.

Mary Ellen loved to have the family gather around the piano to sing hymns, as well as old and new popular songs. Along with instilling a love of music, she shared her passion for lifelong learning by involving her children in the local 4-H club and taking her family on Kansas history tours. Wally and Mary Ellen also passed on their values of hard work and resourcefulness by involving their children directly in many of the chores and fieldwork of the farm. A community leader in many areas related to church and education, Mary Ellen proudly carried on the tradition of the Monitor Farm Bureau Unit that her mother started in 1929, even as its name changed from the Monitor Farm Bureau Unit to the Monitor Home Demonstration Unit, then to the Monitor Extension Unit, and now the Monitor Family Community Education (FCE) Unit. She was instrumental in starting the Vacation Bible School program at Monitor in 1970, and sustaining it through the many decades to follow. At the Monitor Church, Mary Ellen was both a Bible School and Sunday School teacher, as well as accompanist on the piano and organ, collaborating for many decades with Arlene Yoder. Mary Ellen’s role of church musician at Monitor started when she was still a teenager and continued until she was well into her 80s. The family farm tradition, which began with Mary Ellen’s grandfather in the early 1900s, continues to this day, with Amy and Jay Warner (her daughter and son-in-law) managing what is now a “Century Farm.” In 1996, Wally and Mary Ellen received statewide recognition as Master Farmer/Master Farm Homemaker, acknowledging their stewardship of the land and farm community. In 2004, Mary Ellen was awarded the Citation of Merit from McPherson College in recognition of her lifetime achievements and contributions. In 2012, Mary Ellen made a smooth transition into the Cedars retirement community, where she knew many of her neighbors even before she moved in, including her childhood friend and cousin, Lois Neher, who passed away earlier this year. Life in town suited her well at this stage of her life, and she participated actively in a variety of activities and programs at the Cedars, while continuing to attend lectures, concerts, and plays at the college. On August 2, a memorial service will be held at the Monitor Church (please wear a mask), beginning at 5:30 p.m. and followed by a light meal to which all are invited. Mary Ellen will be laid to rest afterwards in the church cemetery, next to her husband Wally, and in close proximity to her son Mark, great-grandfather J.D. Yoder, and many other relatives and friends. In 2012, Mary Ellen made a smooth transition into the Cedars retirement community, where she knew many of her neighbors even before she moved in, including her childhood friend and cousin, Lois Neher, who passed away earlier this year. Life in town suited her well at this stage of her life, and she participated actively in a variety of activities and programs at the Cedars, while continuing to attend lectures, concerts, and plays at the college. On August 2, a memorial service will be held at the Monitor Church (please wear a mask), beginning at 5:30 p.m. and followed by a light meal to which all are invited. Mary Ellen will be laid to rest afterwards in the church cemetery, next to her husband Wally, and in close proximity to her son Mark, great-grandfather J.D. Yoder, and many other relatives and friends. James “Jim” Alton Brown, age 84, died July 26, 2021 in Manhattan, Kansas.&nbsp; He was born to Louie D. and Velda M. (Dennis) Brown on September 26, 1936 on the family farm near Agra, Kansas. 

Jim attended his first four years of grade school at Center School and finished the last four years at Agra Consolidated Grade School. He graduated from Agra Consolidated High School and joined the Kansas National Guard from 1954 to 1962. Jim was a 1959 graduated of Kansas State University earning a degree in feed tech. 

He married Carol Lala on October 15, 1960. 

Jim worked for Garvey Grain, California Pellet Mill Co., Supersweet Feeds, Courtland Construction, Key Milling Co., and Fourth &amp; Pomeroy Associates. He retired in 1999 as principal owner of Key Feeds in Clay Center, Kansas.&nbsp; 

Jim and his wife Carol volunteered for International Executive Service Corp., where they spent six weeks in Egypt in 1991 and six weeks in Ukraine in 1994. He was active in the community and served on the Clay Center Development Board, president of the Clay Center Chamber of Commerce in 1987, and served 11 years on the City Council. Jim was on the Dean’s Advisory Council Kansas State University College of Ag, Milton S. Eisenhower Society Kansas State University, and a lifetime member of the KSU Alumni Association. He won the Outstanding Grain Science Graduate Award in 2010.&nbsp; 

Jim was heavily involved in the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where he served as &nbsp;a Eucharistic Minister, Vestry, Reader, and the Altar Guild. &nbsp;

He is preceded in death by his parents and on Steven Brond.

Very early in life, Marie worked as a telephone switchboard operator before she was united in marriage to Daniel Navrat on September 22, 1947, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Stratton.&nbsp; 

Marie was a faithful parishioner of the Holy Family Parish in Marion.&nbsp; She volunteered teaching second grade catechism at the church preparing children for first communion.&nbsp; Marie led the weekly rosary prayers for many years before Mass and enjoyed Altar Society.&nbsp; She worked in the church kitchen preparing funeral dinners and always had a smile on her face.&nbsp; 

Marie served her community as a member of the election board for several years and she was an avid quilter. 

Her greatest joy was her family which includes her children Donna (Robert) Cherry of Kingman, Ron (Deb) Navrat of McPherson, Daniel J. (Lisa) Navrat of Walton, Patricia Navrat of McPherson, and Machelle (Mike) Ratzloff of Marion; grandchildren Gary (Yolanda) Keen, Jessica Wells, Anjanette Montano, Melissa Chavez, Jason ( Celide) Navrat, Amber (Matt) Powers, Ashley ( Jonathan Graham) Ratzloff and Samantha ( Jordan Simmonds) Ratzloff; 14 great grandchildren, and nine great great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Rich’s life began on November 9, 1942, in Goessel.&nbsp; He was the son of Arthur and Alice (Hannaman) Schlehuber.&nbsp; 

Rich was a 1960 graduate of Marion High School.&nbsp; He served his country in the United States Navy as a Seabee.&nbsp; Rich’s Navy unit built runways in Guam and saw action in Vietnam.&nbsp; He was proud of his country and his service to his country.&nbsp; Rich was a life member of the VFW in Marion and enjoyed going to the American Legion in Hillsboro.&nbsp; 

Rich’s faith was very important to him.&nbsp; He was a long-time parishioner of Holy Family Parish in Marion.&nbsp; Rich was nearly always the first person at church on Sunday morning, prayed the rosary faithfully and was a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.&nbsp; 

Rich’s loving family includes his loving companion of 31 years Betty Medley of Hillsboro; children James (Heather) Schlehuber of Marion, Sherry Schlehuber of AL, Jeremy Schlehuber of Hillsboro, Denise (Chris) Kostelac of Shawnee, KS, Rick (Tricia) Medley of Valley Center and Terry Medley of Topeka;&nbsp; grandchildren Elise, Gabriella, Magdalen, Isaac, Samuel and Katharine Schlehuber, Matthew and Josh Schlehuber, Jacob Schlehuber, Avery, Colby, Tasha Kostelac, Russell, Carol, and AJ Medley, Brooke Medley and Jake Medley; and his siblings Larry ( Joyce) Schlehuber of MO. and Anita Hancock of Marion.&nbsp; 

Rich passed away at his home on Thursday, July 22.&nbsp; 

He is preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Abigail, brother Billy Schlehuber and sister Carole Post.&nbsp;

Roy L. Anderson, age 88, passed away on Monday, July 26, 2021 at Mount Joseph Senior Village, Concordia.&nbsp;He was born on July 27, 1932 in Huscher, Kansas to Floyd &amp; Mary (Burch) Anderson, Sr. 

Roy was a 1950 graduate of Concordia High School.&nbsp; After high school, Roy was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict.&nbsp; He was honorably discharged.

Roy enjoyed, hunting, fishing, bowling, needle work and most of all, spending time with his family.

On January 26, 1955, Roy and Kay Menard were united in marriage at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Concordia.&nbsp; She survives of the home.

Roy was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #1142, and life member of V.F.W. Post #588, all of Concordia.

Roy is survived by his wife Kay, Concordia; two sons, Steven (Susan) Anderson, Hebron, NE; Anthony R. Anderson (Marsha), Sr, Concordia;&nbsp; daughter Lesa Bugbee (LaVern), Fairbury, NE; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; brother Elton Anderson; and sister Virginia Moss, Wichita, KS.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Anthony R. Anderson, Jr., four brothers, Floyd, James, Charles, Robert, four sisters, Florence, Frances, Dorothy, and Barbara Jean.

Visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m., Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Home. &nbsp;&nbsp;A parish rosary with the Knights of Columbus will be led by Fr. David Metz at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.&nbsp; Family will greet friends in the Parish Hall after the rosary.

Anderson, age 88, passed away on Monday, July 26, 2021 at Mount Joseph Senior Village, Concordia.&nbsp;He was born on July 27, 1932 in Huscher, Kansas to Floyd &amp; Mary (Burch) Anderson, Sr. Roy was a 1950 graduate of Concordia High School.&nbsp; After high school, Roy was drafted into the United States Army and served during the Korean Conflict.&nbsp; He was honorably discharged.Roy enjoyed, hunting, fishing, bowling, needle work and most of all, spending time with his family.On January 26, 1955, Roy and Kay Menard were united in marriage at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Concordia.&nbsp; She survives of the home.Roy was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #1142, and life member of V.F.W. Post #588, all of Concordia.Roy is survived by his wife Kay, Concordia; two sons, Steven (Susan) Anderson, Hebron, NE; Anthony R. Anderson (Marsha), Sr, Concordia;&nbsp; daughter Lesa Bugbee (LaVern), Fairbury, NE; five grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; brother Elton Anderson; and sister Virginia Moss, Wichita, KS.He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Anthony R. He will be greatly missed for his unique sense of humor and immense care for others. John lived a fulfilling life as a loving father, stepfather, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a caring brother to three siblings, an amazing husband to his late wife Linda, and a friend to many. He enjoyed traveling to Colorado whenever he had the chance, and he loved having Sunday dinner with his family.

John is survived by his brother William and Kristin Litchman of Albuquerque, NM, sister Martha Linda of San Francisco, CA, son David and Kristina Litchman, stepchildren Kelly and Terry Jones, Stacey Miller, Loren and Dena Miller, Lance and Penelope Miller all of Salina, six grandchildren, Elliott Litchman, Coalton and Jessica Miller, Riley Miller, Cari Miller, Erica Miller, all of Salina, Chellcy Miller of Bonner Springs, and great-granddaughter Dani Miller.

Craig Heald, 58, was born into eternal life on July 24, 2021.&nbsp; Craig was raised on the family farm in Minneapolis, Kansas where he graduated from Minneapolis High School with the class of 1981.

He attended college at Fort Hays, and later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming during his 22-year career.&nbsp; He served with distinction in several positions and earned numerous awards before retiring as the superintendent of the 400th Missile Squadron.

Craig met and married his wife Heidi in 1990 while they were stationed there. After he retired from the military, he continued to serve by becoming a teacher.&nbsp; He was a natural teacher and a wonderful mentor to so many of his students.&nbsp;

He was a member St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he and Heidi renewed their wedding vows, and he was confirmed in the Catholic faith in 2018. He was a wonderful, caring, devoted, and loving husband to Heidi and a genuinely kind person to those he met or knew.

Craig recently moved to Houston, Texas to be near his son and his family. He continued to teach in Houston bringing his humor and compassion to students in class. He was both a teacher and a stable role model to all of his students.

He is survived by his wife Heidi; son Chris (Sara) and grandchildren, Ellie Mae and Henry of Houston, TX; parents Gerald Heald of Winters, CA and Llewellen (Lou) (Ron) Weis; sister Rondee (Clyde) Thrush of Minneapolis, KS and brother Ron (Lisa) Weis of Bennington, KS; nephews Zach (Casey) Weis of Salina, KS and Jesse Weis of Phoenix, AZ; and nieces Katie Thrush and Karlee Thrush of Minneapolis, KS.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Morris and Margaret Heald and Harold and Catherine Peterson.

Billy Joe was born in McPherson, Kansas on June 19, 1970, a son of William Homer and Jennifer Jo (Blackburn) Moon. Billy Joe attended McPherson grade schools, Sulphur Junior High and graduated from Sulphur High School, Sulphur, Oklahoma in 1989. He then attended Ardmore Oklahoma Vo-Tech. Through the years Billy Joe worked for John's Manville, CertainTeed Mfg., Fed Ex, Old Dominion Trucking Company and KDOT all of McPherson, Kansas and the city of Lindsborg. Billy Joe enjoyed being a handyman and could fix anything. He loved blues and country music. Billy Joe didn't know a stranger. He loved camping, fishing, cooking on his black stone grill and was a hard worker. He loved helping his friends and even strangers. His dog Snickers was his little buddy. Most of all he loved spending time with his friends and family. William Joseph Moon was united in marriage to Sonya Allen on June 26, 1999 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This couple established their first home together in McPherson. This union was blessed with two children, Savannah and Avery. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Sonya Moon, of McPherson, Kansas; his children Savannah Moon, of McPherson, Kansas and Avery Moon, of Georgetown, Texas; mother Jennifer Moon, of Sulphur, Oklahoma; sister Shawna O'Dell, of Dallas, Texas; other relatives, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Marjorie was born on her parents' homestead rural McPherson, Kansas on February 7, 1927, a daughter of Mae Ruth (Siebert) and John Gottleb Schafer. Marjorie attended the Iola Grade School, Iola, Kansas and the McPherson Grade Schools and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas. Following graduation Marjorie worked for Farmers Alliance Insurance Agency in the filing department and McPherson Hospital as a nurse's aide. She was a member of First United Methodist Church McPherson, Kansas where she was baptized and confirmed. Marjorie Lousie Schafer was united in marriage to Joe Stillings on February 11, 1949 at the Naval Station Chapel, Key West, Florida. The young couple established their first home together in Key West, Florida. After Joe's honorable discharge from the navy, they moved to McPherson, Kansas. This union was blessed with the birth of seven children, four sons and three daughters, Floyd, Sharon, Donald, Kenneth, Cheryl, Mary, and Gary. Through the years Marjorie was a homemaker and she took great pride in providing for her family in this manner. After the children were on their own she went back to work and worked for Bader Cleaners, worked in the Nazarene Church Nursery, and did some private childcare. Marjorie was a beloved mother, the most patient, kind, loving mother ever. She always cared for others first and herself last. Wherever Mom was, was home to her children who will miss her loving eyes, smiles, and hugs full of love. Marjorie enjoyed children, animals, cooking, gardening, sewing, and spending time with her family. Born into a loving family in the rural Windom, KS area, John James Borgstrom came into this world on Saturday, March 3, 1951. His parents were school teachers. J. Valerian and Maebert (Nelson) Borgstrom welcomed him as their first child, followed by his sister LuAnn, brother Mark, and baby sister Debbie. Ironically, John hated school, and yet he made many friends who stayed in contact throughout the years. He was known for his playful nature and enjoyed nothing more than time spent visiting, telling stories, and laughing with friends and family. From childhood John enjoyed spending time outdoors, which led to his love of farming and camping. After graduation from Little River High School in 1969, he continued to help farm the homestead with his dad, while also attending Salina Area Vo-Tech for a certification in electronics. Through mutual friends, he was set up on a blind date with the woman who would become the love of his life, Susie. They were married on August 11, 1978, in Hill City, Kansas, her hometown. Soon after, their oldest daughter Anna was born, followed by son Ash, daughter Holly, and baby Gabe. John loved children, and is fondly remembered for his role as Santa each Christmas for the kids, cousins, nieces and nephews, and eventually for his grandchild, Kora Jo. As a lifelong resident of rural Windom, and an active and faithful member of the Andover Lutheran Church, John was well-loved. He regularly served on church committees, assisted with worship, and led the choir. Co-workers became friends as he worked at MBM in McPherson as a copier repair technician, sold insurance or water softeners, delivered oxygen through Kanox/Airgas in Hutchinson, or drove for BNSF Railroad Railcrew Xpress in Newton. He made many connections through his Ark Valley Good Sam camping club chapter, and also through his volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and the ReUse It Center in McPherson. John’s joy was his family. As his kids left home and began families of their own, John and Susie and the kids all remained close, gathering together and having a meal as often as possible. Even after John became paralyzed in December of 2020, his family stayed close through the months of hospitalization and visited nearly every day. John James Borgstrom left this world peacefully on Sunday, July 25, 2021, at Hillsboro Community Hospital, beloved by the staff whom he came to think of as family. The legacy of his love survives: wife Susie; children Anna and Tony Borders, Ash and Kristen Borgstrom, Holly Borgstrom and fiancé Lucas Roberts, Gabe Borgstrom; grandchildren Kora Jo Borders and Reagan and Wesley Bessette, great-grandchildren Octavia Jo Bessette; siblings LuAnn and Doug Kogler, Mark Borgstrom and Julie Reichman, and Debbie Adams. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Bruce Adams. He will be missed by too many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends to list. Marsha (Sloan) McManus of Plano, Texas passed away on July 23, 2021, at the age of 73. She was born on February 28, 1948, to Edward Keith and Dorothy (Nordling) Sloan in McPherson, Kansas. Marsha married Paul McManus on June 1, 1968, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 

She was a homemaker and loved interior design. Marsha had a lifelong passion for charity work and was very active in Chi Omega Christmas in Dallas. She attended Bent Tree Bible Church and was a volunteer teacher in the Bible Study Fellowship. Marsha was extremely outgoing, and she was an adventurous scuba diver and downhill skier. She is survived by her husband Paul McManus of Plano, Texas; son Scott McManus and wife, Liyibeth, of Carrollton, Texas; daughter Shannon Kearns and husband, John, of Plano, Texas; grandchildren Yelardin McManus, Reese Kearns, and Wesley Kearns; sister Gail Butler and husband Fred, of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and numerous other loving family and friends. Marsha was preceded in death by her parents; and brother Steven Kent Sloan. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at Bent Tree Bible Church in Carrollton, Texas. Earl James Wells, 85 years died July 25, 2021 at&nbsp; in , KS.&nbsp; He was born on August 30, 1935 in Longford, Kansas, the son of Doyle and Velma (Livengood) Wells.&nbsp; Earl was raised in the Longford community.&nbsp; 

He served in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years.&nbsp; 

Earl married Nancy Rodgers on October 2, 1971.&nbsp; After leaving the Air Force, they made their home in rural Clay County and Earl worked as a truck driver for several years, most of his time spent with Newell Truckline.&nbsp;Nancy preceded him in death on March 6, 1992.  

&nbsp;Earl was a member of the Longford Lions Club, V.F.W. and American Legion.&nbsp; 

He was also preceded in death by his parents and a son, George Wells.

Eunice Ann Bretz Hunter, 90, long time resident of Council Grove, KS passed into eternity July 26, 2021 at Diversicare in Council Grove, KS with her daughters Carla, Kathy, and Christy by her side.

She was born June 29, 1931 in Emporia, KS, daughter of Vernon Dean and Ruth Ann (Berger) Bretz. Eunice graduated from Council Grove High School and attended business college. She married Calvin Carl Hunter on September 10, 1949.

She had many occupations in Council Grove including secretarial work at Hunter Chevrolet, lifeguard and swim teacher of Red Cross swim lessons in Council Grove. She was a wonderful seamstress and made many dance recital costumes for Jill Fitzgerald Dance Studio. She was best known for working and then owning Bretz Shoe Store at 206 W. Main Council Grove, KS. She was an avid promotor of small town businesses.

She was a member of the Council Grove Chamber of Commerce, Council Grove Christian Church, and Council Grove Country Club for many years. She was Ladies City Golf Champion in 1965. She belonged to and enjoyed several bridge clubs. She devoted many hours making quilts for her daughters and grandchildren.

Eunie was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Family was of utmost importance to her and she treasured her three daughters. She loved watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play ball and dance. This included 67 consecutive years of going to dance recitals. Eunie loved all sports, playing pitch, reading, and crossword puzzles. She will be sadly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Darlene and Donna, and brother Dean.

Eunie is survived by her daughters: Carla Pruitt and husband Don, of Victoria, KS, Kathy Litke and husband Darrell and Christine Ziegenhirt and husband Donnie, all of Council Grove; nine grandchildren: Alycia Straight (Dane), Amanda Pruitt, Dara Fillmore (Jason), Dana Reddick (Bobby), Deanna Buttrey (Thomas), Dawn Palmquist (Lucas), Derek Ziegenhirt, Jacob Ziegenhirt, and Casey Cowdin (Troy); 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Shirley Hickman; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Morris County Hospital Foundation and can be sent in care of Sawyer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 273, Council Grove, KS 66846.
