Lila Lee Mitchell, 90, passed away on July 31, 2022, at Legacy of Salina, Kansas. Lila Lee was born in Palco, Kansas, on June 19, 1932.&nbsp; She was the second oldest child of Cletus and Lois (Cook) Gibson.&nbsp; She married Richard Mitchell on May 27, 1951 and had four children.&nbsp;

Lila Lee worked as a med aid at the Delphos rest home for several years.&nbsp; After selling the family farm, she moved with Richard to Central City, Nebraska where they owned and operated the Crest Motel for many years.&nbsp; After Richard’s death, she moved to Beloit, Kansas, where she worked at the Super 8 motel.&nbsp; At the age of 79, she ran circles around her younger teammates, and was awarded the Chamber of Commerce Image award for showing pride in her work, her community, and herself.&nbsp; She worked until the age of 80 when retired and moved to Salina.&nbsp;

Lila Lee is survived by her brother Dean Gibson (Arlene); sister-in-law Denise Gibson; her children Irvin Mitchell (Jennifer), Terry Mitchell (Elaine), Sharon Henning (Kenny), Peggy Garst (Ken).&nbsp; She also had 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

She is preceded in death by her parents Cletus and Lois Gibson; husband Richard Mitchell; her brothers Bobby, Norman, and Bill Gibson; and a grandchild, Brian Garst.&nbsp;

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., on Friday, August 5, 2022, at Ryan Mortuary in Salina.&nbsp; Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on August 6, 2022, at Ryan Mortuary.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the Glasco Cemetery where Lila Lee will be laid to rest next to Richard.&nbsp;

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Salina.&nbsp;

Larry Dale&nbsp;Woodman, son of Dale H. Woodman and Marjorie (Scofield) Woodman was born January 8, 1947 at Belleville, Kansas and passed away on July 31, 2022 at his home in rural Belleville, Kansas at the age of 75.&nbsp; To many who knew him, he was known&nbsp;simply&nbsp;as Woody.

Larry attended Belleville Public Schools and graduated from Beloit Vo-Tech in diesel mechanics in&nbsp;May of&nbsp;1967.&nbsp;He went to work for Martin Tractor Company in Topeka, KS in June of 1967. He was called to the U.S. Army in October of 1967,&nbsp;and&nbsp;attended basic training in Fort Campbell, KY.&nbsp;He then went to radio operator school and graduated number one in his class and was selected to attend radio repair school. In June of 1968, he was sent to Vietnam and returned home in August of 1969, where he continued his employment with Martin Tractor until his retirement in 2003.&nbsp;He worked for Martin Tractor for 36 years, first in diesel mechanics in Topeka, KS and then in Concordia, KS in parts sales.&nbsp;&nbsp;After retirement, he&nbsp;worked part-time for the Belleville Police Department and Republic County Sheriff's Department&nbsp;from 2004-2021.

Larry was a member of the American Legion, KS-NE ham radio club,&nbsp;was a&nbsp;storm spotter&nbsp;and a member of the local emergency planning committee.&nbsp;He served on the Belleville Wesleyan Church board&nbsp;and sang on the worship team.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Larry was a jack of all trades; he could fix anything.&nbsp; He was a ham radio operator and knew Morse code.&nbsp; He rebuilt cars, loved woodworking projects, and even had his private pilot's license for a time.&nbsp; He loved Jeeping in the Colorado mountains with his family and Martin Tractor friends.&nbsp; Larry also loved to hunt and fish.&nbsp; Larry and Mabel shared many adventures traveling, trekking across the country to track meets and their most memorable was to Germany in 1994, when Lonnie was a color guard in a parade in Normandy celebrating the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of D-Day. They also served on 12 mission trips to Alaska where they made lifelong friends. Larry and Mabel also enjoyed riding their motorcycle around the country. Larry loved playing the guitar and singing.

Larry was united in marriage to Mabel Vieselmeyer on June 20, 1970 and to this union two children were born, Lonnie and Marlea.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dale and Marjorie (Scofield) Woodman, grandparents Elton and Hazel (White) Scofield, nephew Danial Vieselmeyer.

He survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mabel Woodman of rural Belleville, KS, one son, Lonnie L. Woodman of Salt Lake City, UT, one daughter, Marlea (John) James of rural Belleville, KS, three grandchildren, Dynah Woodman, David Deters, Deborah Deters, two great-grandchildren,&nbsp;&nbsp;one brother, Marlin and (Diane) Woodman of Belleville, KS, one sister, Judy (Al) Uphoff of Belleville, KS,&nbsp;brother-in-law Charles Vieselmeyer&nbsp;(Marge)&nbsp;of Chester, Nebraska, nieces and nephews,&nbsp;other relatives and many, many friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Funeral services will be held 10:30a.m., Friday, August 5, 2022, Belleville Wesleyan Church, Belleville, KS, conducted by Pastor Mark McGregor.

Interment will be in Grace Hill Cemetery, rural Belleville, KS.

Military graveside services by the United States Army Honor Guard.

Memorials may be given to the Larry D. Woodman Memorial Fund.

Morgan Rochelle Smalley was born December 28, 1990, in Kansas City.

She died unexpectedly July 28, 2022, at her parents’ home in Augusta, KS.

Morgan grew up in Goddard, Kansas and Seattle, Washington. She loved reading and writing from her earliest years, producing and selling her own books for a time. Morgan graduated from Goddard High School in 2009 and subsequently earned her bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of Kansas.

Most importantly, she acquired an adventurous spirit leading to her world travels. Morgan worked as an English teacher in Hong Kong, witnessing the Chinese oppression and freedom protests there, and in Krakow, Poland, where her heart broke for the flood of Ukrainian war refugees she observed and assisted.

Her wanderlust lasted to the last of her days, including hopes to travel to South America to see Machu Pichu, to visit the Hermitage Art Museum of St. Petersburg, Russia, and observing Passover in Jerusalem.

Passionate and energetic in her convictions, Morgan graciously accepted divergent points of view and people from all walks of life.

Morgan was also passionate in her affections for her family and the far-flung flock of friends she collected around the world.

She is survived by her parents Jack and Annette Smalley, and her sister Megan of Ann Arbor Michigan.

Grandparents Norman and Barbara Smalley, Harriet and Richard Nelson, aunt Marcy Smalley and aunt and uncle Marcy and Roger Clegg, survive to mourn her passing. Her maternal grandfather Keith Armstrong passed away in 1992.

Morgan’s cousins Taylor and her husband Aaron Moon, Jordan Bickford, Michael and Chelsea Clegg, their families, and the rich family trees of Gib and Eunice Wiens, Gene and Abby Smalley, Walter and Eva Rundell, and Charles and Ida Armstrong will also remember her with love.

Morgan’s bucket list included spelunking, sky diving, scuba diving, and visiting the Great Wall of China, along with many others. She had hoped to tour Scotland with Taylor and Aaron in September.

Virgil Dean Bunce, 72, of Salina, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2022. He was born May 3, 1950, in Scottsbluff, NE.

He was the sheriff of the Todd County Sheriff's Department for twenty plus years in Mission, South Dakota. Virgil also worked as a correctional officer for 20 years at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility in Hutchinson, KS.&nbsp; During retirement, Virgil worked for&nbsp;the Durham School Bus (USD 305) for five years.

He was preceded in death by his father Virgil L. Bunce, and his mother Bertha Bunce.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 45 years, Eva I. Bunce, and three children: Jodean Kane of Springfield, MO, Lisa Richards of Junction City, and Nancy (Robert) Bunnville, of Junction City, two brothers, 10 grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, August 5, 2022, at Roselawn Heights Memorial Chapel, 1920 E. Crawford, Salina

Harland Arnold Riekenberg, 97, of Salina, passed away Friday, July 29, 2022.&nbsp; He was born June 19, 1925, in Linn, KS.

Harland met the love of his life, Dorothy Stockamp in October of 1954 and married her May of 1955 in Salina. After 58 years of love and happiness, Dorothy passed away August 16, 2013.

Harland grew up on the farm during the 1930s and started working as a hired hand for local farmers before starting his lifelong career of truck driver with Simon Truckline of Washington, KS. Later he moved to Salina, KS where he started driving for Gooch Feed Mill. Later Harland delivered laundry for Model Laundry Company of Salina, KS for him to be home in the evenings with his loving wife Dorothy. Harland later retired in 1990 after four years with Food Services of America and 24 years at Gamble Robinson as a truck driver.

Harland was very active in his church Trinity Lutheran in Salina, KS, holding several positions during his earlier years. He loved western music, making Prairie Band a regular stop and Kansas City jam sessions. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cards, his favorite being “Sheep Head (Buck)”

Harland also looked forward to family BBQs, holiday get-togethers and a slice of homemade pie.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arnold W. and Emma Dorothea R. (Grother) Riekenberg, and beloved wife of 58 years, Dorothy Riekenberg, and nephew Bob Stockamp.

Survivors include sister Luella Colburn of Belleville, KS, several nieces and nephews: Elden Colburn of Manhattan, Ks, Lois Garcia and husband Max of Wakefield, KS, Emilie Greenwood and husband Jim of Morrowville, KS, Howard and wife Marcella Walter of Loveland, CO, Lucille Farrar of Bonner Springs, KS, Lester and wife Lois Walter of Sylvan Grove, KS, Dale and wife Judy Walter of Salina, KS, Jan Dieffenbach of Clearwater, FL, Herbert Rinkel of Clearwater, FL, Bonnie Hanson of Illinois, along with many great nieces and great nephews.

Harland will be greatly missed by so many here on earth as he ascends to a well-deserved place in heaven.

Visitation will be on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, one hour before the service.

Arlene Elizabeth Ann Gerhardt, 97, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2022. She was born May 22, 1925, on the Grefe dairy farm in Ottertail, MN.

She worked for USD 305 at Central High School as a Food Service worker. Affectionately known as a “cafeteria lady.”

She had a passion for sewing as well as helping others. She completed hundreds of quilts for World Relief and volunteered as an RSVP sewer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Richard and Sophie (Thalmann) Grefe, an infant brother, and two adult brothers; Orville Grefe and Eugene Grefe.

She married Cleo Joe Gerhardt in February of 1951. He preceded her in death and passed away September 16, 1985.

She is survived by her children; Betty J. (Art) Davis of Bennington, Patricia (John) Gerhardt-Schmuck of Concordia, Darrell (Joyce) Gerhardt of Amity, OK., Randy (Kristy) Gerhardt of Salina, and a sister; Audrey (Lowell) Brutlag of New Brighton, MN., 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren and 3 step-great grandchildren. Also survived by two sisters-in-law; Margaret Grefe of Ottertail, MN and Charlotte Grefe of Tempe, AZ.

Kay M. Hembrough, 72, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 24, 2022, at her home in rural Hutchinson, Kansas.

Kay’s lifelong love for animals began as a young girl.&nbsp;She participated in 4-H, competed in Lil' Britches Rodeo and high school Rrodeo.&nbsp;Later, as a young woman, she also worked polo horses at the Wichita Polo Club.&nbsp;She grew up near Wichita and graduated from Derby High School&nbsp;in 1967.&nbsp;After graduating, Kay started her accounting career&nbsp;as a bookkeeper at an area car dealership. In addition&nbsp;to accounting, she drove a school bus for Wichita Public Schools and later, Hesston Public Schools.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kay eventually renewed her love of horses after her children were grown and spent her weekends chasing cans at various horse shows and barrel races around Kansas. For several years, she ran her own show arena, "Buddy Up Arena," outside of Burrton, Kansas.&nbsp;After hanging up her reins and eventually retiring from accounting, Kay continued helping others&nbsp;driving buses that served the people&nbsp;in the Hutchinson area where she’d lived for the past 20+ years.

Kay is preceded&nbsp;in death by her father Ralph “Bud” Hembrough; mother Gladys (Futhey) Hembrough; brother John C. Hembrough; and one grandson.

She is survived by her three children, Tony (Khristy) Morgan of Augusta; Tim (Kelly) Morgan of Peck; and Traci Morgan of Hesston, as well as four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Kay's life will be held at a later date.

After moving to Alabama, she worked for Intergraph Corporation, Virginia College, and Books a Million. Ayn’s hobbies included genealogy and she was a voracious reader.

Ayn is survived by her brother Robert Lee Gilliland (Debra) of Huntsville, AL, nephews James Robert Gilliland (Katie) of Charlotte, NC, David Lee Aldridge (Kristy) of Winchester, KY, and niece Stacy Michelle Wilhold (Gilbert) of Huntsville, AL, and many great nieces and nephews. &nbsp;

Kay Coleen Hanchet, 64, of Salina, passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2022. She was born June 11, 1958. She was the third daughter born to Earl and Coleen Hanchett. 

She is survived by two older sisters, Linda (Hanchett) Schrag and Tara (Hanchett) Cupps, brothers-in-law Jerry Schrag and Terry Cupps, niece Jody Schrag McCoy and nephew Troy Schrag; great-nieces Gracie, Jada, Trey Childs, and Sidney Schrag; Susan Wensink/family, and Sarah Macalus/family.

In her younger years she attended school at Gypsum Elementary through fifth grade. Dad was transferred with International Harvester Company to Anthony, Kansas. She attended herjunior high 6th - 8th grade years in the Anthony Middle school and her freshman year at Chaparral High School. Dad was transferred to Salina, Kansas her sophomore year so she attended Salina South High School sophomore through senior years. Her college years were at Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS where she graduated with an education degree in 1980.

She taught at Salina South before joining Dillons for 28 years. The staff and the shoppers loved her, and she loved them. She was very excited when the new (huge) store was built. You didn't have to worry about finding something you needed...you just asked Kay and she would lead you right too it. I think she probably knew every square inch of that store. Her goal was to make the shopper happy. In the earlier days of her career with Dillons, they use to give out rewards to their workers for their performance. As I was going through some boxes in the basement of things she kept, I found stacks of those reward papers with her name on them. Didn't surprise me at all as her main focus was on the people who shopped there and the people she worked with.

She will be greatly missed by her family and the many friends she knew and loved during her time here with us. Tara found this quote and it is what Kay's personality truly was: "What You Leave Behind Is Not What is Engraved in A Stone Monument but What Is WOVEN in The Lives Of Others." She truly touched many lives with her joy, her love for her friends, and her love of family.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents Earl and Coleen Hanchett; paternal grandparents, Herbert and Velma Hanchett and maternal grandparents Raymond and Elsie Cyr.

Celebration of Life service will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday August 3, 2022 at Ryan Mortuary, Salina. Cremation was chosen; private inurnment will be at a later date in Delphos Cemetery, Delphos.

Brenda Lee Tankersley, age 65, passed away on Thursday, July 28, 
2022, at her home in Garden City, Kansas. She was born on March 23, 
1957, in Concordia, Kansas, the daughter of Orville Lee and Lois Tyler 
McComas. A resident of Scott City, Kansas since 1979 moving from 
Kalvesta, Kansas, she was a farmer.

Brenda was a Member of the Gospel Fellowship church in Shallow Water, Kansas.

On May 12, 1979, she married Oran Lee Tankersley in Scott City, Kansas. He survives.

Survivors include her Husband- Oran Tankersley of Scott City, Kansas,
 Two Daughters- Kelsey and husband Garrett Baker of Scott City, Kansas, 
Ashalee Tankersley of Scott City, Three Grandsons- Corbin Baker of Scott
 City, Kansas, Dylan Baker of Scott City, Kansas, and Ethan Baker of 
Scott City, Kansas.

A Graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, August 1, 
2022, at Scott County Cemetery in Scott City, Kansas with pastor Don 
Williams presiding.

Nina Jo Rusco, age 92, died on July 26, 2022, in Topeka, Kansas.

 Nina Jo prepared her life story to share:

Life of Nina Jo (wife, mother and teacher- AND Grandma- that’s me!) I was born August 19, 1929, in Vining, Kansas, at the home of my grandparents, Charles and Ina Haynes Rusco. My parents were Hazel Rusco Huls and Joseph Hugh Huls. For a time, we lived in Ft. Worth, Texas, but when I was about three, my parents separated, and I spent the next 22 years of my life with mom, granny and granddad in the house where I was born. Though I missed the presence of my father, my life in small town Vining with my mother and her family was good for a little girl and I was mostly happy.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

I attended 12 years in the Clifton Grade and High schools where I received my basic education. 

After my graduation in 1947, my friend Iris and I went to summer school at Kansas State College and in the fall, I began a teaching career that spanned the 50 some years between 1947 and 1998. I continued my education at Kansas State University for two full semesters and 10 summers and graduated in the summer of 1958. A few years later I was accepted to the graduate school of K- State but stopped my time-consuming studies just a few hours short of acquiring my master’s degree, to be home with my young daughters and husband on the farm.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

&nbsp;On January 16, 1954, I was engaged to my long-time sweetheart, Delbert Rusco, Jr. on his 26th birthday. We had waited a good many years to announce our commitment to each either, so it was an exciting and very happy day for us. Later that same year&nbsp;on December 26th, we were married by Dr. Samuel George in Manhattan, Kansas, at the KSU campus Chapel. We had both grown up as lonely, only children, so for us, just being together every day was very special.

 In the spring of 1956, we moved to the farm home where Jr.’s parents began their married life in 1921 and where their only son, my Jr., was born in 1928. They resided on the farm until Delbert Sr.’s retirement at which time Jr. assumed the farming responsibilities. We lived here with our family until 1990 when I became the sole resident of the old farm home.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

&nbsp;We had two beautiful daughters, Robin Hazel, in September 1959, and Roxanna Kathryn in July 1961. In 1981 Robin married Andy Vélez and they blessed us with four wonderful grandchildren: Jari Rusco, Elena Jo, Tessa Hawley, and Josiah Elliott. After Josiah’s birth in 1996, I thought our family was complete, but wonder of wonders, in January 2001, Roxie had a darling baby boy. My happiness was complete when she named him Charles for my beloved granddad. I love being “Nanny” to those five grandkids.

Most of the dear people of my early years were long ago lost to me including an infant baby sister Leonainie, my parents Joe and Hazel, grandparents, all of my aunts and uncles, cousin Diana and many, many good friends. All were gone too soon- or so it seems to me.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Tragedy struck our family in 1990 when my strong, handsome husband suffered a severe brain aneurysm which resulted in a devastating illness of two years and finally his death in 1992. I miss Jr. terribly, oh, so much, but I have found I’m happiest and almost content remaining in the comfortable home he provided for me- with all its wonderful memories! As of this writing in August of 2004, I’m still enjoying living here on the Rusco-homesteaded farm tending my flowers and garden, reading, visiting, and dining with friends, and making frequent trips to spend time with my children in Topeka.&nbsp;

&nbsp;I am proud of my affiliation with several worthy organizations, but mine are very passive memberships as I’ve never been comfortable in a leadership or “hosting” role. I belong to the following: Presbyterian church, Eastern Star, Legion Auxiliary, Historical Society and D.A.R.&nbsp;

*Nina was also blessed with five great-grandchildren: Adelle, Callan, Silas, and Julian Vélez and Watson Stacks. Number six (great-grandson Stacks) is coming this September. &nbsp;

Burial will take place at the Rusco Cemetery close to the Rusco Farm where Robin and Andy spend a lot of time and are open to visitors.

Larry Dale (Birddog) Martin, age 70, died July 25, 2022, in Clay Center, KS. He was born in Anthony, KS on December 2, 1951, to Loren H. and Janie Elizabeth (Heckethorn) Martin. Larry grew up on a dairy and wheat farm near Caldwell, KS.

He raised prize winning chickens for his 4-H projects and outcooked the girls in his 4-H cooking class.&nbsp; While on the farm, his favorite pet was his bird dog, Sandy.

Larry attended school in Caldwell and graduated from Caldwell High School in 1970. He also went to junior college in Arkansas City. &nbsp;After a traumatic accident in Arkansas City, he spent several years living in a rehab facility in Kansas City and then moved to Clay Center to be closer to family.&nbsp; While in Clay Center, he worked for Gilmore-Tage and Big Lakes.

Larry also participated in a couple chili cook offs and won.&nbsp; His chili was appropriately name “Dragons Breath.” According to his sister, he made the best chocolate chip cookies but refused to give out his recipe.

He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Donald Martin. 

Larry is survived by his sisters, Sharon (Paul) Houston of Manhattan, KS, Merrie Martin of Wichita, KS, Joan Martin of Topeka, KS and Loretta (David) Kordyak of Manhattan, KS. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A time of remembrance will be held at the Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center, KS on Saturday, August 6, 2022, from 9-11 a.m.

Ronnie R. McWhirt was born February 18, 1949 in La Junta, Colorado the son of Junior and Helen (Harris) McWhirt. He passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at the Village Manor Nursing Home in Abilene. He had been a longtime Salina resident. Ronnie served in the United States Army and Army Reserves for over 41 years serving in Viet Nam. He was a heavy mobile equipment repairman. He retired as a Sergeant First Class. He loved working and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren. He was united in marriage to Ronda Thomas on November 21, 2018 in Abilene. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his daughter Jessie King (Billy) of Manhattan, Kansas, stepdaughters Stacy Klein (Eric) of Minneapolis, Jo Emig (Dusty) of Abilene, close friend Daryle Schwerdt (Terri) of Salina, and eight grandchildren.

Graveside services for Ronnie will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 30, 2022 at the Detroit Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Honor Guard. His family will receive friends from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm at the funeral home.
