Getting the hay wagon through the gate was always a challenge when taking bales off a field to be stored at a yard. All of the gates were constructed prior to the invention of round balers and therefore the openings were generally snug when trying to sneak a trailer through loaded with 10 bales.&nbsp;

Clearing the gate was the main obstacle for every hayfield save one, which didn’t have a fence let alone a gate. The hayfield was a small parcel left after a highway project divided a former pasture. The 10 acres or so wasn’t worth fencing in for grazing so it became a meadow.&nbsp;

At the time, crossing the highway with a full load on the trailer was about the most nerve-wracking job on the ranch. The two-lane asphalt cut angled across the crossroad and a hill to the south obstructed the view of oncoming traffic. It took 30 seconds at most to get everything from the bumper to taillights across the highway, but that felt like an eternity. Crossing the highway was far better than trying to navigate a turn onto it, however.&nbsp;

We always avoided hauling from that field during peak traffic times for obvious reasons. In fact, we avoided being anywhere close to highways with farm equipment whenever possible. Every farmer and rancher I know does the same. I know how frustrating it can be to get stuck behind a tractor pulling equipment. I can also assure you the person in the cab is just as anxious to get off the road and into the field as you are to reach your destination.&nbsp;

Sometimes, however, a highway isn’t just the fastest way to a field, it’s the only route available. Farmers and ranchers will go out of their way to avoid slowing you down if they can. The lightly trafficked backroads where normal vehicles are only going twice as fast as a tractor are highly preferable than a blacktop road with cars going three or four times faster.&nbsp;

Whether you’re on the highway or make a turn onto one of those backroads this summer, be on the lookout for those slow moving vehicles. As wheat harvest wraps up, there will be fewer combines and grain carts on roadways. But there will still be plenty of tractors, semis, sprayers, cultivators, hay wagons, swathers, balers and other slow-moving vehicles to contend with.&nbsp;

Being temporarily slowed is far better than a sudden, permanent stop. Keep your eyes focused on the road ahead, slow down when you see farm equipment ahead of you and give a little wave as you pass as an acknowledgement you understand life comes with small inconveniences.&nbsp;

Use the extra moments to absorb the views that are missed when hurrying to your destination. You’ll find no shortage of natural wonders to keep your eyes occupied. It will only take a few moments before your journey resumes its previous pace. Just as the highways are filled with summer travelers, the backroads are busy with all the activities involved in putting food on your plate.&nbsp;

Insight: Busy backroads

This is day 7 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

According to the June 23, 2024 USDA/NASS Kansas Crop Progress and Condition Report, winter wheat harvested was 53%, well ahead of 17% last year and 25% for the five-year average. Winter wheat mature was 94%, well ahead of 53% last year and 65% average. Kansas winter wheat condition rated 8% very poor, 15% poor, 35% fair, 36% good and 6% excellent.

Wheat harvest is just getting started in northwest Kansas, while south central areas are wrapping things up after last week's rains.

The central parts of Kansas — from Dodge City to Great Bend to Hutchinson and beyond — were hit hard with the drought this spring.

After missing rain during most of the growing season, John Hildebrand of Stafford reports rain finally came a couple weeks ago — after the wheat was ripe, which delayed the beginning of harvest. The Hildebrands were able to start harvest on June 13 and were in the home stretch on the afternoon of June 24.

Overall, it was a hard year, due to lack of moisture and weed pressure.

“We have weed pressure in our area,” Hildebrand said. “Thin stands and rain before harvest is the perfect recipe for weeds to come through.”

Hildebrand reports yields to be about the same as last year, which was also below average. Test weights range from 56 pounds per bushel to 59 pounds per bushel.

In Rice County, near Chase, Doug Keesling says this year's crop is three times better than last year; however, last year's yields were only in the single digits.

“In general, this wasn’t a perfect crop, but this was the best crop we’ve been able to harvest in the past three years,” Keesling said, “We need to be thankful for the blessings that we have, and this year we were able to get a decent harvest.” Two-thirds of his acres last year were abandoned due to drought.

Keesling farms in both Rice and Barton counties and his best-performing wheat variety, Bob Dole, yielded an average of 25 bushels per acre, had a test weight of 57 pounds per bushel and had an average of 13.5% protein this year.

Keesling started cutting his wheat on June 7 and only has a mud spot left before he wraps up. While wrapping up wheat harvest, he still has some catching up to do with his double crop sorghum and soybeans.

“We are able to plant a lot faster than we’re able to spray our double crop,” he said. “The wind storms we had last week and the strong winds lately have put a pause on us spraying; otherwise, we’d be done double-cropping.”

Mike Jordan of Beloit in Mitchell County got his combines rolling on June 14 and is about halfway done with harvest. He reported a wide range of yields that will probably result in an overall average harvest for the year. After a year of sparse rain in his area, Jordan was pleasantly surprised as he started cutting.

“The wheat is better than it looks, which is a tribute to the genetics,” Jordan said, “When we finally got the rain this spring, we got the bushels there.”

He is hoping for an average of 50 bushels per acre with conditions of fields on both ends of the spectrum. Some of the lower-yielding fields had a delayed start and did not come up until January; luckily there was some late rain that rescued those fields. He reported proteins ranging from 12 percent to 15 percent and test weights around 61 pounds per bushel. Jordan said his star variety was Westbred’s WB 4401.

This block party will be an all-ages opportunity to promote awareness around mental health, reduce stigma, and provide resources for our friends and neighbors needing support. But it's also a chance for us all to come together, find joy, and remind each other that we’re all part of this vibrant community.

Our kick-off planning meeting will be Wednesday, June 26, 2024 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Saline County Health Department, 125 W. Elm Street Conference Room A.

At this meeting, we’ll discuss the location, activities, volunteer needs, and more. Your voice and perspectives are invaluable to making this a fantastic event that brings our community closer. Some preliminary ideas for the block party include:

Saline County seeks community input for mental health block party

A Salina man is in custody on multiple allegations after a weekend incident.

Just after 7 p.m. Saturday, an officer responded to report of a theft at Sam's Club, 2919 Market Place in Salina, according to Salina Police Captain James Feldman.

A 48-year-old male from Junction City who was shopping reported that around 6:45 p.m. he left his Samsung Galaxy cell phone, valued at $1,800 in the basket of the electric scooter at the store. 

When he went back, it was gone. Sam's security reviewed the video and observed a man taking it and leaving the store. Then, at 9:30 p.m. that night, an officer was sent to Walmart, 2900 South ninth for a possible sex offense case. 

Contact was made with a 44-year-old woman from Salina who indicated that she was shopping at the store when a subject later identified as 25-year-old Carlos Sllva approached her asked her to buy him a sweater, which she agreed to do.

Silva then asked her for a ride to Topeka, which she said no, so he asked for a ride to Burger King instead, and she agreed.

She paid for the sweater. He then started to try to hug her. She did not like that, and moved his hands away from her, but she did give him a ride to Burger King. 

As they were driving to Burger King, he then touched her inappropriately. She slapped his hand away and asked him what he was doing and wanted him out of the car. He refused and requested to be taken back to Walmart, she was concerned that he may be armed or did not know how he was going to react, so she drove him back to Walmart. 

And once they got there, he then inappropriately touched her again, and she pushed him away and told him to get out of the car. When Silva did that she then made contact with Walmart employees who contacted Police

Officers arrived and made contact with Silva and while speaking with him, it was learned he was the one who took the cell phone. Officers recognized him from the description and that he had gone to that ATM kiosk at Walmart where he had sold the phone for $110.&nbsp; Officers were able to recover the phone.

Police arrested Silva on requested charges of Sexual battery, Theft by deception:Value $1,500 to $25,000 and Theft of property lost or mislaid; Value $1,000 to $25,000

City reminds residents of rules regarding temporary sign placement during election season

SALINA - Salina soccer is headed to the next level, and Damon McDonald and Jacob Bircher love being at the forefront.&nbsp;

McDonald, an incoming Salina South junior, and Bircher, an upcoming Southeast of Saline junior, are upping their individual games this summer, competing on teams in Kansas City.

The two will compete as members of the Kansas City Surf's ECNL/RL teams.

McDonald, a team captain and starting center back, has already seen his work ethic pay off firsthand.

“People will always be better or faster than you," he said. "But it's important to put in hard work to excel. Working hard has opened the path for me to be on teams that are at higher levels, such as the Surf National team based out of San Diego.”

Bircher, in his third year with the team, can be found at right back, where he has found a home after playing midfielder and right winger for his first two seasons.

“There will always be someone better,” Bircher said. “You have to be at your best all the time, and work hard in order to keep up. With hard work and dedication, you can go a long way.”

Both athletes recently made the Surf Select Midwest Regional team and advanced to the national showcase where McDonald made the national team, and Bircher was named to the national reserve team.

Not bad for a couple of kids from central Kansas.

“To me, it means that my hard work and dedication to this sport is paying off, and that's driving me to keep working harder to achieve more in my career,” Bircher said.

“I've been given an opportunity that few have been given, and that shows me that hard work and dedication pays off,” McDonald noted. “I’m not done yet, and I still have to work hard and have an obsession like never before to continue going farther on this journey.”

Vince Doering of Manhattan High is a teammate of McDonald on the 2008 ECNL/RL squad.

“Damon is a very strong player. He’s a great leader and plays with an unmatched physicality,” Doering said. “Jacob is super fast and makes quick cuts that’s hard to defend. His stamina is great and he plays hard the entire game.”

Both are ecstatic not just to be a part of the national team, but the exposure it’s bringing to Salina soccer as well.

“We can make a large impact in the youth that play soccer,” McDonald said. “Those younger players know about us and that gives them a sort of hope to know that it is possible.”

According to Bircher only two players from Salina have ever gone pro on the soccer circuit. They include goalkeepers Adrianna Franch of the US women’s national team and Ethan Bandre, currently with the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer.

“My hope is that there could possibly be two or three people from a small town in the middle of KS who make a big impact on youth soccer and for everyone else,” Bircher said. “To show that it is possible to do big things even if you’re from a small place.”

“With my high school’s team making it to state, a lot of those kids came to watch us leave town and made posters for us,” McDonald, whose Cougars finished third at state said. “I do believe I have at least an impact of some of the youth.”

Those posters hit a soft spot in McDonald’s heart.&nbsp;

“To me those posters meant that those kids wanted us to succeed,” McDonald said. “The fact that their dedication and time was put into a poster for us meant that they cared. That in itself was a confidence boost.”

Despite his recent success, Bircher’s three years haven’t always gone smoothly.

“My first year on the team was the first year that KC had put together the ECNL/RL team and it was rough to say the least,” Bircher said. “It was a brand new team playing in one of the highest leagues there is, and to be honest, it went pretty poorly.”

After a bit of a rough start new coach Matt Foster, started the winning culture in year two.&nbsp;

“Coach Matt brought in a few more new players and we started turning our situation around,” Bircher continued. “We started off the year really well with a tournament in Orlando, where we combined teams with Damon’s team and we didn’t lose a game. After that, we separated the 08s and 07s again for league play. And we started playing so much better, and we’ve gone on to win the Presidents Cup which gave us a ticket to go represent Kansas at regionals soon in South Dakota.”

Both are great friends who have respect for the other in sports.

“Jacob is a very good man, he is nice but knows how to keep others moving,” McDonald said. “As a soccer player he never gives up, he is always working and willing to leave everything on the field. He always fights through adversity. He reached out to the necessary people to secure a good training source to further his chances at advancing in his career.”

“I would describe Damon as a very good friend," Bircher said. "We’ve been playing together since we were very young and we’ve excelled together as players and grown as friends on and off the field. He’s pushed me to be a better player and a better person, and we’ve been through a lot together. He's a great friend and a great teammate.”

McDonald’s teammates at South have been a part of 10 shutouts the last two seasons, including six on last year’s 14-6-1 Cougar unit.

Bircher, meanwhile, placed 19th at state in cross country and has been a top-five varsity runner, taking second as a team at state. 

At state track, Bircher finished seventh in the open 400 and third in the 4x4.

“As a runner Jacob has always been really successful,” South’s Bret Jones said. “His level of commitment is higher than the majority of runners out there. Making state as a freshman doesn’t come by accident. He’s got the goofy runner’s personality too.”

Jones had this to say about his Cougar teammate McDonald.

“He’s really fun to be on the field with and you can count on him to win the ball just about every time,” Jones said. “One of the hardest workers I’ve played with. Also very determined, winning is definitely an expectation to him.”

Saline County Jail Bookings, June 24

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University researchers and representatives of Kansas Wheat have published updated findings on the value of feeding wheat to pigs.

What they’ve found is good news for swine producers and wheat growers.

“Our data collected from 2014 to 2020 suggests that wheat’s mean energy content is 99% and 98% of corn for digestible energy and metabolizable energy, respectively” said Joel DeRouchey, a swine specialist for K-State Research and Extension.

Bottom line: Wheat can be used at a similar rate as corn in those areas where wheat is available, without a major decrease in the diet energy density.

“The use of wheat co-products for the milling industry is a common practice in feeding livestock,” DeRouchey said. “For wheat, there are many different classifications of co-products, such as wheat middlings, wheat millrun, wheat shorts and wheat red dog.”

K-State formed a partnership with Kansas Wheat to update what is known about the nutritional value of wheat and wheat co-products.

“Wheat milling co-products – including bran, middlings and shorts – provide good nutritional value,” said Aaron Harries, the vice president of research and operations for Kansas Wheat. “In particular, those products have high phosphorus content, which results in less supplemental phosphorus in the diet, and reduced costs for the producer.”

Complete with the thrum of music from City Lights Stage and the chatter between vendors and visitors — Salina celebrated Juneteenth in downtown to uplift the spirit of freedom.

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, found out they were finally free after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, two years earlier.

In 2021, the United States Government solidified the memorialized day as a federal holiday, with towns and communities celebrating with city-wide parties, parades and gatherings.

"Seeing the community come together to celebrate not only a date that's important to us as African Americans but also a day that should be important to Americans in general, as it's a part of American history, not just Black history," said Margaret Dixon, Salina Juneteenth Committee president. "When I look out, and I see the diversity of the people, that makes my heart glad."

About a dozen vendors and local advocacy groups surrounded City Lights Stage on Saturday, June 22, with rotating entertainment throughout the afternoon.

Salina City Mayor Bill Longbine also addressed the crowd to commemorate the day of celebration.

"Let us remember the history and significance of this day in 1865 when, on June 19, all African Americans were granted freedoms afforded to all Americans," Longbine said. "Our hope is by celebrating, future generations will learn and appreciate the history and legacy of the African American community."

Local Salina businesses like BeYOUtiful Creations by AS joined the celebration and sold Juneteenth-inspired apparel alongside other examples of her custom designs.

"I really enjoy the more recognition that it's getting, and the fact that we can come together as people and celebrate something that probably should have been celebrated by everybody," said Adria Smith, owner of BeYOUtiful Creations.

K-State expert discusses the importance of monitoring livestock for signs of heat stress

It’s county fair season in Kansas, and while local events are a great way to enjoy the sun and time with friends, heat can be an invisible fun bandit for livestock.

Kansas State University beef extension veterinarian A.J. Tarpoff said it’s important for youth showing livestock to watch animals closely and know the symptoms of heat stress.

All animals – as well as people -- can experience heat stress, which occurs when the body cannot get rid of excessive heat, either through sweating or other means.

Tarpoff said cattle handle heat differently than other animals. In particular, they struggle with the ability to sweat, which makes them reliant on getting rid of heat through their respiratory system, such as breathing the heat out. Cattle will accumulate heat during the day, then dissipate the heat load during the night when it's cooler.

“It takes 4-6 hours to return cattle to regular temperature,” Tarpoff said.

He added that one way to tell if a show steer or heifer is affected by heat stress is to look for unusual behavior from that animal. Symptoms may include reduced feed intake, increased time standing and crowding around water. In the show barn, animals may also display an increase in breathing rate.

One way to keep animals cool is to make sure barns get plenty of ventilation. Tarpoff said that heat stress mitigation strategies should be planned with cattle comfort in mind, and each strategy will be unique to the housing situation. Other factors to consider include whether the animal has its winter or summer hair coat; hair color; and past health issues.

Tarpoff said youth should consider reducing animal handling during heat intervals, and having those handling events completed by 10:00 AM.

“Weighing, processing, sampling and shipping cattle are all necessary tasks but they should be strategically conducted during the very early morning hours to ensure cattle comfort,” Tarpoff said.

Another way to avoid heat stress is to provide plenty of water to cattle. Tarpoff said the amount of water cattle need doubles as the heat increases from 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Tarpoff also encourages youth to consider moisture levels from the washing areas. Some locations can artificially increase the humidity and cause unneeded stress on livestock.

“Monitoring conditions and preparing for heat stress is a must when caring for your animals,” he said.

Fair season is here: Keeping animals cool at county shows

Salina's first park transformed for the Smoky Hill River Festival weekend, with the familiar Oakdale covered by the colorful world of the 48th festival.

The murmur of more than 150 musical and artistic performances across three stages greeted thousands of visitors as they walked across Oakdale Park's decorated bridges.

Outside the stages sat seemingly endless rows of exhibiting artists, selling their work created anywhere from down the road in town to states away. 

Even <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/01acc2b3-402f-446d-b131-92f0ceca2629">through two severe storm warnings and dozens of broken pieces of artwork</a>, many visitors took home one-of-a-kind handmade items. Many visitors said, "It wouldn't be the festival without some rain!" which many Kansas visitors seemed accustomed to.

Although rain, wind and small hail cut the SM Hanson Festival Jam short, bands continued performing throughout the weekend. Don Wagner &amp; Friends, the fourth of 17 groups, was the last band to play at Festival Jam.

Those who had the chance to perform before the storm hit town included Salina South Jazz Band, Visual Lies, Downtown Funk and Don Wagner &amp; Friends.

 </figure>Lix, King Tones, Fed Up, Hey Radio, Soul Preachers, Drop Everything, Kyndred, HyWay 14, Bootleg Mercy, Dunebuggy, Love Like War, Steve Hanson &amp; Co. and The Blades missed their chance to play in front of the festival crowd.Oakdale Park reopened the following day at 10 a.m., with Jane Anderson, the executive director of the Friends of the River Foundation, parading a young YMCA class around the park alongside their Smoky Hill River puppet crew.<figure>

 </figure>As the young class paraded around the park, they saw sights of aspiring fiber artists using a loom for the first time, bands from across the country playing on the festival stages and artists selling their works to customers.Nashville-based band Wildermiss was one of the 151 performances that entertained the Smoky Hill River Festival crowds.<figure>

 </figure>"Our booking agent said, 'You should play this,' and we said, 'Yeah, we should!' and so it worked out because it's kind of the beginning of our tour," said Wildermiss lead singer Emma Cole. "I feel like [our sound] has a little bit of everything; with this last album we released, so much of it is touching on ethereal, ambient with indie, alternative rock, and then some bubble gum pop with some moody, heavy hitting ruby disco."<h2>Cultivating creativity — a unique space for the youth</h2><figure>

"And [I got] to know what they like and don't like."<figure>

 </figure>Beebe took Leah Smith, 13, and Edison Beebe, 7, this year to the First Treasures pavilion, where each purchased a piece of artwork donated by festival vendors for $5 or less."I love art, especially stuff similar to that [the painting she chose from First Treasures], and I think it's so amazing," Leah said. "It inspires me."This year was Leah's first encounter with First Treasures, while Edison attended the event for the first time last year. <figure>

 </figure>Smoky Hill River Festival volunteers helped children navigate the experience and provided information about the artists who created the artwork they purchased."It's a good experience," Beebe said. "We went and saw his [Edison's] artist and got to take a picture with them."<h2>Inspiration from the creative process</h2>Underneath the cool shade of an Oakdale Park pavilion, seven art and craft artists chatted with customers while creating new jewelry pieces, wooden utensils, ceramic pots and more.This year, the Art and Craft Demonstrating Artists included Julie Cates from Salina, Vaughn Evans from Linwood, Tracey Musselwhite from Salina, Nicholas Pahls from Salina, Amethyst Sankey and Pam Pentico from Salina, Liz Bonney from Lawrence and Eleanor Carlson from Blue Rapids.<figure>

 </figure>Throughout the festival, each artist demonstrated how they created their handmade items, answered questions for curious attendees and walked aspiring artists through different steps of their processes.Musselwhite is a science teacher at Coronado Elementary in town but has enjoyed pottery since childhood and continues the practice today."I've had several students come through here, and some of them didn't realize that I did this," Musselwhite said. "They take such an interest in it, and I love seeing the kids excited about art."<figure>

 </figure>Close by, with a small torch in hand, Carlson demonstrated her process of making jewelry with precious metals and gemstones of varying shapes.Carlson said she attended <a href="https://www.fhsu.edu/">Fort Hays State University</a> in western Kansas and participated in a national student exchange program at <a href="https://www.ric.edu/">Rhode Island College</a>, where she learned most of her silversmithing skills."I paid Fort Hays prices to go to Rhode Island College for a year, and that was fantastic," Carlson said. "That's where I learned a lot of my silver smithing and general introduction to fine metal smithing."<figure>

 </figure>Once she returned from Rhode Island College, she discovered that Fort Hays did not have much support for fine metal smithing, but a sculpture professor strove to provide Carlson with a creative space."[Professor Toby Flores] did a great job of giving me a little corner in the studio, and I got to do jewelry work as much as I wanted," Carlson said.
