Robert Edmunds won three judicial elections in his home state of North Carolina. He was elected to the state Court of Appeals before serving two terms on the state’s Supreme Court.&nbsp;

Edmunds said he never would have risen through the ranks without elections. He didn’t have any political connections to the governor. He didn’t run any big-city law firm. Edmunds won his races because he proved to voters he was the most qualified.&nbsp;

“Elections tap into the biggest talent pool,” Edmunds told Kansas lawmakers. “Any lawyer in good standing who has ambitions to serve on the bench can take a shot at it.”

Kansas lawmakers are now debating that question. Should voters elect justices to the Kansas Supreme Court? Or should the state keep its merit-based nominating process?

<a href="https://www.kslegislature.gov/li/b2025_26/measures/scr1611/">The proposal</a>&nbsp;is a “colossal sea change” from the state’s current system, said Fred Logan with the Kansas Bar Association, and it would require the Kansas Constitution to be amended. A majority of voters would need to approve the change.&nbsp;

Supporters of the change, which include the state attorney general’s office and Americans for Prosperity, say a direct election of justices is needed so everyday Kansans have a voice in the judicial system. But opponents say this proposal demolishes an already effective system and pours dark money into the courts.&nbsp;

The Kansas Supreme Court’s current system

Kansas does not use the federal system for picking justices. The governor alone does not pick someone and there is no Senate confirmation.&nbsp;

The current system has a nominating commission that includes four lawyers and four nonlawyers. Each congressional district must have a lawyer and nonlawyer appointed to the commission.&nbsp;

Nonlawyers are appointed by the governor and lawyers are elected by other lawyers in their congressional district. A ninth member — a lawyer and chair of the commission — is elected by a statewide pool of lawyers.

The commission questions candidates in public interviews then selects three names and the governor makes the final decision from there. This system was approved by voters in 1958 after a controversial selection to the state Supreme Court.&nbsp;

In 1956, then-Gov. Fred Hall lost reelection during the primary. Chief Justice of the Kansas Supreme Court Bill Smith was also sick and considering retirement but worried the incoming Democratic governor would appoint a liberal to the Supreme Court. Hall, Smith and Lt. Gov. John McCuish hatched a plan.&nbsp;

Smith retired from the Supreme Court. Hall resigned as governor and was replaced by McCuish. McCuish was governor for 11 days and appointed Hall to the state Supreme Court. That infuriated Kansas voters, who reformed the system and created the merit-based process we have today.&nbsp;

Rashane Hamby, director of policy and research at the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas, said the current system works well and there’s no reason to change it.&nbsp;

Supporters of the bill who want to change the law acknowledged that elected judges and appointed judges are of the same quality. Those supporters also said the system needs to be overhauled to give voters more say in the state’s highest court. Kansans already vote on justices through retention elections where voters can kick justices off the bench if they want.&nbsp;

The current system lets the governor and the nominating commission grill candidates about their qualifications for the job, and that’s how the decision is made. Elections require candidates playing politics, Hamby said. Candidates aren’t always chosen based on qualifications but on money and donations from political groups that might have cases before the court.&nbsp;

“The Supreme Court should not be for sale to the highest bidder,” she said.&nbsp;

Almost two dozen states elect their judges. In Wisconsin, Hamby said, $51 million was spent on the 2023 Supreme Court race. The state’s race later this year is expected to top that spending and become&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wisconsin-supreme-court-musk-trump-spending-4d95c11f76be495cc5acadaf9981a42b">the most expensive Supreme Court race</a>.&nbsp;

Logan, with the Kansas Bar Association, said politics, fundraising and campaigning are all fine for the governor’s office or state officials. Not for the courts. Logan said the current system is free from politics and it should stay that way.&nbsp;

But Senate President Ty Masterson, an Andover Republican, doesn’t agree that the current process is free from politics.&nbsp;

He said the process of getting selected by the commission has political jostling. Holding elections gives everyone a chance to have their voice heard, not just a small group of people.&nbsp;

“Elections are how we govern from the bottom up,” Masterson said.

Masterson and other Republicans say they support changing the system so people have a voice. Supporters of the change also said that Supreme Court justices can time their resignations based on what political party holds the governor’s office. Allowing a regular vote would remove the possibility of selections being timed in a partisan manner, supporters say.&nbsp;

Kansas lawmakers have tried to change how Supreme Court justices are picked before. These debates are more than a decade old, but the Kansas Supreme Court’s decision to&nbsp;<a href="https://thebeaconnews.org/stories/2022/07/28/kansas-vote-on-abortion/">uphold abortion rights</a>&nbsp;has raised the stakes on this debate.&nbsp;

“I would just comment that I would ask committee members and others to go out and read some of the justices’ opinions,” said Sen. Caryn Tyson, a Parker Republican, during the debate.&nbsp;

“I have,” said Sen. Mike Thompson, a Shawnee Republican, “and there’s concern in there.”

Lawmakers debate whether voters should elect Kansas Supreme Court justices

One person was injured in an accident just before 9:30 a.m. Friday in Ottawa County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 International semi driven by Jose Ramon&nbsp;Chairez, 38, Moore, Oklahoma, was northbound U.S. 81 just South of Oxbow Road.

The semi traveled off the roadway to the right. The driver tried to correct the vehicle. He steered the vehicle across both northbound lanes of travel. The semi then left the roadway to the west and the driver over corrected, lost control and the semi overturned.

EMS transported&nbsp;Chairez Salina Regional Health Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver hospitalized in Salina after semi overturns

The Salina Family YMCA will host Hoops for Heroes on March 15. This basketball game will feature a friendly rivalry between the Salina Police Department, the Saline County Sheriff's Office and the Salina Fire Department. The event is free to attend, but donations are encouraged to support the <a href="https://www.salinaymca.org/support-y/give">YMCA’s 2025 Annual Strong Kids Campaign</a>, which aims to raise $150,000 to provide opportunities for children and families in the community.

The YMCA gym's doors open at 4:30 p.m., and tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. The game will feature two 20-minute halves, with added excitement, including designated five-point and 10-point shooting spots on the court.

The evening will include various entertainment and activities, including a kids' dance session supported by YMCA programs after the first quarter and a halftime skills challenge, a three-point contest, and a 50/50 raffle at 6 p.m. D.J. Cash Hollistah will provide music throughout the event.

The Strong Kids Campaign runs until March 15 and concludes with the Hoops for Heroes game.&nbsp;

"We wanted a meaningful way to bookend it," said Chris Lehecka, president and CEO of the Salina Family YMCA. "It’s a celebration of the YMCA's mission and recognition of our volunteers' dedication in helping kids engage with the Salina YMCA."

Hoops for Heroes: SPD, Sheriff's Office, SFD face off to support Salina YMCA

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will begin work on two bridge replacement projects along K-4 in Saline County on Monday, March 3.

The first bridge replacement will take place at the K-4/I-135 junction near exit 82. To facilitate construction, I-135 will close at this location at 7 p.m. on March 4 for overnight bridge removal. Traffic will follow a signed detour using the ramps at exit 82. The highway is expected to reopen by 6 a.m. on March 5. Additional overnight closures will be announced later to accommodate bridge beam installation.

For motorists traveling on K-4 in this area, a detour will be in place utilizing interchanges at exits 78 and 86.

The second bridge replacement project is set to take place east of the K-104/K-4 junction over Dry Creek. During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane and controlled by temporary traffic signals, with speeds lowered through the work zone.

King Construction of Hesston has been awarded the $5.2 million contract to complete both bridge replacements. The new bridges are expected to open to traffic by November, with the entire project scheduled for completion in December.

Saline Co. K-4 bridge replacements begin March 3; I-135 overnight closure planned

A Salina AT&amp;T employee has been arrested following a corporate investigation into suspected theft exceeding $10,000.

According to the Salina Police Department (SPD), AT&amp;T corporate investigators contacted authorities on Feb. 20 regarding possible employee theft at the store located at 2596 S. Ninth Street. The investigation determined that Brandon L. Campbell, an employee, had allegedly engaged in fraudulent transactions between March 1, 2023, and Feb. 11, 2025.

According to SPD Capt. James Feldman, Campbell would purchase phones online, bring them to the store, and use another employee’s login credentials to manipulate trade-in values, inflating the amount higher than it should be. He would then allegedly take credit or cash for the price difference.

On Feb. 27, Campbell was taken into custody and booked into the Saline County Jail. He faces charges including one count of felony theft, 31 counts of making a false writing, and unlawful acts concerning computers.

Eric Powers, the new manager of the AT&amp;T store located on S. Ninth Street in Salina, is actively working to resolve issues caused by Campbell’s alleged actions. Powers said he is focused on informing customers about the management change and assisting those affected. UPDATED: Salina AT&T employee arrested in $10K+ theft, fraud investigation

OCCK Transportation is excited to announce a significant development for <a href="https://salinacitygo.com/81-connection/">81 Connection</a>, the regional fixed-route bus service for North Central Kansas, as part of an ongoing pilot program.&nbsp;

Starting March 3, 2025, 81 Connection will become fare-free, offering all rides at no cost to passengers for the next three months, ending May 30, 2025. This initiative is a partnership between OCCK Transportation and the North Central Regional Planning Commission. The program aims to increase transportation accessibility for all North Central Kansas residents and improve community health and mobility.

"The decision to make 81 Connection fare-free during this pilot project is a game-changer for residents," said Trell Grinter, Director of Transportation for OCCK, Inc. "This is a significant step toward creating a more equitable and connected North Central Kansas."

The fare-free pilot program is designed to remove financial barriers to transportation, helping residents throughout North Central Kansas easily access essential services. This initiative supports the region’s overall health and economic development by making it easier for individuals and families to get where they need to go, whether that’s medical or mental health appointments, nutrition sites, job interviews, seniors’ or veterans’ services, or school.

The North Central Regional Planning Commission has been instrumental in bringing this project to life, recognizing the vital role that transportation plays in improving overall health outcomes and fostering regional development.

This legislative session, Kansas legislators are considering whether to restrict what low-income households can buy with their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Specifically, Senate Bill 79 requests authorization from the federal government to prohibit the use of those funds to buy candy and soda.

Even if the bill passes, the federal government will still have the final say on granting a waiver. However, this issue represents a broader debate in U.S. politics about the proper purpose and scope of government involvement in our day-to-day lives.

In other words, is this something that the Kansas Legislature should do, or is the government meddling too much in people's private decisions?

Proponents of these restrictions contend that excluding sugar-filled beverages and snacks aligns with the SNAP program's initial objective of assisting low-income families in purchasing nutritious food. They argue that limiting unhealthy purchases would help ensure those taxpayer dollars are spent wisely.

They also suggest that these restrictions could even lead to lower healthcare costs down the line.

In contrast, critics argue that this kind of policy unfairly targets low-income people. Restricting their purchases implies they can’t or shouldn’t make their own food choices. SNAP recipients already face the stigma of using government assistance. Under these rules, they might face even more frustration when they face growing restrictions on what they can and cannot buy.

Furthermore, there isn’t universal consensus on what counts as “unhealthy.” Many processed foods have sugar in them, but they’re also a staple for families who don’t have easy access to fresh produce.

Enforcing these rules would also be complicated and not just for government agencies. Stores would have to keep track of which products are allowed, and benefit recipients would need to be informed of this change, which could cause confusion at the checkout.

The question is whether the potential health benefits are worth the extra hassle.

This is not the first time a state has tried to restrict SNAP purchases. However, past efforts to impose SNAP purchasing limits have been stopped by strong lobbying efforts from the beverage

and food retail sectors, bureaucratic resistance within the USDA and congressional agricultural committees, and hesitance from those who prioritize the program’s role in supporting low-income households without added burden or stigma.

It is also important to note that research on whether these types of disincentives actually change purchase and consumption behavior show mixed results.

However, there’s a growing push for policies that limit government aid and what people can do with it. In fact, some wonder if policies like this will see new life under Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s call to “Make America Healthy Again.”

Kansas lawmakers face a choice. While encouraging healthier eating and making better use of public funds sounds good in theory, the practical and ethical issues can’t be ignored. In the end, Kansas must ask: Will restricting SNAP purchases help, or is it just more government interference?

Bethany College names Laura Crawley as 16th President

TOPEKA — Two former leaders of a Kansas foster care provider have entered plea negotiations to avoid trial for allegedly bilking the organization out of millions of dollars, federal court records show.

A&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2022/11/11/federal-grand-jury-indicts-former-kansas-foster-care-officials-on-fraud-charges/">grand jury indicted</a>&nbsp;former Saint Francis Ministries CEO Robert “Father Bobby” Smith and William Whymark, the organization’s former IT director, in November 2022 on charges of wire fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering with damages totaling at least $4.7 million.

A Feb. 25 court filing in the federal case shows “the parties are presently involved in plea negotiations and anticipate resolving this case without a trial.” The filing asks the court to authorize&nbsp;<a href="https://www.uscourts.gov/about-federal-courts/probation-and-pretrial-services/presentence-investigations" target="_blank">a presentence investigation report</a>, which a court officer prepares when a defendant pleads guilty in order to help the judge determine the appropriate sentence.

The report “would materially facilitate the parties’ ongoing plea negotiations by allowing them to quickly and efficiently identify areas of potential agreement, while simultaneously isolating any disputed loss issues that may truly require litigation,” the joint court filing said.

Under the charges included in the indictment, they could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, plus fines and restitution.

Denny Marlin, spokesman for Saint Francis Ministries, said the organization wouldn’t comment “out of respect for the criminal justice system” and “to ensure we do not compromise the integrity of the legal process.”

“We look forward to its resolution and remain focused on our mission of providing healing and hope to children and families,” Marlin said.

Kansas Reflector&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2020/12/04/kansas-agency-serving-3100-foster-children-accused-of-rampant-financial-mismanagement/">first reported</a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2020/12/15/kansas-based-foster-care-providers-financial-turmoil-cubs-tickets-amplify-concerns-in-nebraska/">allegations of misconduct</a>&nbsp;by Smith and Whymark shortly after they left Saint Francis Ministries in November 2020. An&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2020/12/20/kansas-foster-care-leader-charged-469k-to-credit-cards-hid-financial-losses/">internal investigation</a>&nbsp;revealed excessive billing for IT services and charges by Smith for lavish personal expenses.

In 2022, Saint Francis sued Smith, Whymark and former general counsel David Shaffer, accusing them of operating a scheme to enrich themselves through fraudulent billing. The lawsuit identified Shaffer and Whymark as brothers.

The former employees denied the claims, and Smith countersued Saint Francis employees for defamation because of reporting by Kansas Reflector.

Saint Francis hired Smith, an Episcopal priest ordained in 2014 by the Diocese of Chicago, as president and CEO in 2014. From 2017 to 2020, according to the state lawsuit, Smith charged $442,276.17 on Saint Francis Ministries credit cards, “a significant portion of which funded lavish meals, entertainment, travel and gifts for him and his family.” Smith also paid a travel agency $57,125.43, “a majority of which had no legitimate business purpose or was grossly excessive,” the lawsuit said.

Shaffer for at least eight months billed Saint Francis both through his Chicago law firm and in his individual capacity, which the lawsuit characterizes as legal malpractice. From 2015 to 2019, Shaffer billed more than $1 million in legal fees to his law firm, and from 2018 to 2020 an additional $500,000 in payments to himself. Smith approved the “grossly excessive” invoices, the lawsuit said, including invoices for legal work unrelated to Saint Francis and $4,000 for moving and storage expenses for office furniture at his Chicago law firm.

Whymark wasn’t qualified to provide IT services, but Smith hired him as chief information officer and signed off on more than $11 million for services provided by Whymark’s IT company. The lawsuit said those services were “grossly deficient and overpriced.”

Whymark’s company outsourced work to build a content management system that wouldn’t function. In the fall of 2019, while Saint Francis was undergoing a financial audit, the system crashed and destroyed financial data. Whymark then wiped the hard drives, according to the lawsuit, and the organization spent an estimated $3.2 million to repair Whymark’s IT work.

At the time, Saint Francis Ministries was the largest foster care provider in Kansas, serving more than 3,000 foster kids.

By January 2020, the IT costs combined with a severely underbid contract to provide foster care services in Nebraska placed Saint Francis in financial peril. The organization survived in part by receiving a $10 million Payment Protection Program loan, which it wasn’t eligible for and never repaid, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year, the Kansas Department for Children and Families awarded new foster care contracts and replaced Saint Francis as the provider for the Wichita region. An&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2020/12/20/kansas-foster-care-leader-charged-469k-to-credit-cards-hid-financial-losses/">internal investigation</a>&nbsp;revealed excessive billing for IT services and charges by Smith for lavish personal expenses.In 2022, Saint Francis sued Smith, Whymark and former general counsel David Shaffer, accusing them of operating a scheme to enrich themselves through fraudulent billing. The lawsuit identified Shaffer and Whymark as brothers.The former employees denied the claims, and Smith countersued Saint Francis employees for defamation because of reporting by Kansas Reflector.Saint Francis hired Smith, an Episcopal priest ordained in 2014 by the Diocese of Chicago, as president and CEO in 2014. From 2017 to 2020, according to the state lawsuit, Smith charged $442,276.17 on Saint Francis Ministries credit cards, “a significant portion of which funded lavish meals, entertainment, travel and gifts for him and his family.” Smith also paid a travel agency $57,125.43, “a majority of which had no legitimate business purpose or was grossly excessive,” the lawsuit said.Shaffer for at least eight months billed Saint Francis both through his Chicago law firm and in his individual capacity, which the lawsuit characterizes as legal malpractice. From 2015 to 2019, Shaffer billed more than $1 million in legal fees to his law firm, and from 2018 to 2020 an additional $500,000 in payments to himself. Smith approved the “grossly excessive” invoices, the lawsuit said, including invoices for legal work unrelated to Saint Francis and $4,000 for moving and storage expenses for office furniture at his Chicago law firm.Whymark wasn’t qualified to provide IT services, but Smith hired him as chief information officer and signed off on more than $11 million for services provided by Whymark’s IT company. The lawsuit said those services were “grossly deficient and overpriced.”Whymark’s company outsourced work to build a content management system that wouldn’t function. In the fall of 2019, while Saint Francis was undergoing a financial audit, the system crashed and destroyed financial data. Whymark then wiped the hard drives, according to the lawsuit, and the organization spent an estimated $3.2 million to repair Whymark’s IT work.At the time, Saint Francis Ministries was the largest foster care provider in Kansas, serving more than 3,000 foster kids.By January 2020, the IT costs combined with a severely underbid contract to provide foster care services in Nebraska placed Saint Francis in financial peril. The organization survived in part by receiving a $10 million Payment Protection Program loan, which it wasn’t eligible for and never repaid, during the COVID-19 pandemic.Last year, the Kansas Department for Children and Families awarded new foster care contracts and replaced Saint Francis as the provider for the Wichita region. Saline County Jail Bookings, Feb. 27

ELLSWORTH COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 6:30a.m. Wednesday in Ellsworth County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Hino Box Truck driven by David E.&nbsp;Bridgeforth, 58, Tre, New Jersey, was westbound on Interstate 70 two miles west of 12th Road. The truck traveled off the road, entered the north ditch and the driver overcorrected.&nbsp; The truck rolled onto the passenger side and came to rest blocking both lanes of travel.

A westbound 2021 Freightliner semi driven by&nbsp; Iazizion&nbsp;Vafoev, 24,&nbsp;Trevosed, Pennsylvania, attempted to avoid the box truck. The semi struck the undercarriage beneath the cab of the box truck.&nbsp; The impact caused the truck to spin into the north ditch. The semi came to rest facing northwest in the north ditch.

Bridgeforth was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Frontier Forensics. EMS transported Vafoev to Wesley Medical Center. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

ELLSWORTH COUNTY— Westbound Interstate 70 is closed in Ellsworth County between Kansas 14 and Kansas 232 due to a semi crash, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.

At approximately 6:45a.m., the Kansas Highway Patrol was notified of a serious crash involving two semis on Interstate 70 westbound just west of the Vesper exit in western Ellsworth County.

KDOT is on scene assisting with traffic control and rerouting.

The KHP’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team (CHART) is also on-site. This specialized team of troopers is highly trained in accident reconstruction and works to provide clarity in serious crashes like this. Drivers should expect delays, seek alternate routes,

KANSASWORKS hosts manufacturing and aerospace job fair March 5

Kansas Department of Commerce Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland today announced the Kansas Department of Commerce has awarded $3.47 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to support 12 housing rehabilitation and commercial revitalization projects across the state.&nbsp; When matched with more than $4.33 million in local contributions, the rolling round of CDBG funds brings the total investment to approximately $7.8 million.

“By combining local investments with state and federal support, we’re able to unlock further economic potential by improving housing and commercial spaces in communities throughout the Sunflower State,”&nbsp;Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “The Kelly-Toland administration is committed to ensuring our Kansas communities have the tools they need to be successful and prosper.”

The 12 rehabilitation and revitalization projects highlighted the power of collaboration between local governments and the Kansas Department of Commerce to address critical community needs. The investments go beyond restoring and improving essential infrastructure — they foster new opportunities for business growth and housing stability throughout Kansas.

A few highlights from the 2024 rolling round include:

The City of Emporia, Commercial Rehabilitation: Renovating commercial downtown building, including roof, gutter replacement, wall stabilization, floor enhancements, window upgrades and fire sprinkler line connections.&nbsp; The City of Neodesha, Commercial Rehabilitation: Revitalizing the historic Brown Hotel into a restaurant, entertainment venue, small office spaces and 12 new apartments.&nbsp; The City of Eureka, Housing Rehabilitation:&nbsp;Investing funds in repairs and upgrades for low-to-moderate-income households to create safe, livable spaces for current residents and increase community appeal for future newcomers.&nbsp; The City of Salina, Housing Rehabilitation: Providing needed structural repairs for 12-14 homeowners who could not otherwise afford to make them

The federal funds provided for these projects are administered by Commerce’s CDBG program for the development of vibrant, viable communities that address their housing, public facilities and economic needs. To be selected for the funds, local government units must meet at least one of three program objectives:

The grant will benefit low- and moderate-income persons.&nbsp; The grant will prevent or eliminate slums and blight.&nbsp; The grant will resolve an urgent need that communities are not able to solve themselves

Salina among communities awarded state funds for housing rehabilitation

Salina Police Department officers arrested a 21-year-old man Tuesday evening after he allegedly assaulted an 11-year-old boy during a recreational basketball game at Oakdale Elementary School’s playground.

According to Salina Police Capt. James Feldman, officers were dispatched to 811 E. Iron Ave. at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Feb. 25 for a report of a battery. Upon arrival, officers made contact with two 11-year-old boys and a 12-year-old boy.

The juveniles reported they had been playing basketball with a man later identified as River Norberg, 21. During the game, an exchange of “trash talk” escalated, and Norberg allegedly tackled one of the 11-year-olds, putting him in a chokehold that restricted his breathing. A 12-year-old boy intervened and pulled Norberg off the victim, but Norberg allegedly attacked the 11-year-old again, placing him in another chokehold.

The 11-year-old also sustained a scratch above his right eye and reported that Norberg struck him several times on the top of his head. The other two juveniles managed to pull Norberg off the victim before he fled the scene, according to police.

Salina Post is working to verify the nature of the relationship between the juveniles and Norberg.

Officers located Norberg several blocks away and took him into custody without incident. He was booked into jail on a charge of aggravated battery.

The juveniles were released to their parents.

Saline County Jail Bookings, Feb. 26

By SALINA POST One person was injured in an accident just before 9:30a.m. Tuesday in Morris County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2006 Peterbilt semi driven by Robert Leroy Dauer, 74, Marquette, was eastbound on U.S. 56 approximately six miles east of Herington.

The vehicle crossed the center lane into the westbound lane. The driver was&nbsp;unable to gain control of the semi and rolled and came to rest on its side across both eastbound and westbound lanes of U.S. 56.

EMS transported Dauer to the Marion County Hospital. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

The A&amp;SV’s Smoky Valley Limited is set to host its second annual St. Patrick’s Day Express on Saturday, March 15. The festive train departs Abilene’s Rock Island Depot at 6:00 p.m. for a two-hour journey through the scenic Smoky Hill River Valley.

The menu features a choice between corned beef and hash with candied carrots and peas, or bangers and mash with peas, brown gravy, and candied carrots. For dessert, guests will be treated to Guinness brownies. In addition to coffee, tea, and water, there will be an option to enjoy an ice-cold beer or a glass of wine.Participants are encouraged to wear green and embrace the fun, as organizers promise an unforgettable celebration on the rails.
