Surrounded by colleagues, friends and family, Salina Airport Authority Executive Director Tim Rogers ceremoniously received his final call sign from the head of Air Traffic Control Manager Brandon Walker.

"The Airport Authority wanted to give you a proper sendoff," Walker said. "So without further adieu, Airport One, Salina Tower, you are cleared for retirement. Congratulations on a remarkable clear and the impact you've had on our community."

Rogers then shook Walker's hand, concluding the retirement celebration.

A host of speakers preceded Walker, with the Salina Airport Authority Board Vice Chair Stephanie Carlin introducing the event at 5 p.m. in Hangar 600.

Carlin first told the crowd about some of Rogers' impact on recent strides in job creation and industrial growth at Salina Regional Airport.

"Under his stewardship, the Salina Regional Airport has experienced significant growth, modernization and operational efficiency improvements," Carlin said. "His commitment to excellence and passion for aviation have not only shaped the airport's success but also have enriched the fabric of Salina."

Once Carlin finished her introductions, she brought Greg Bengston, the Salina Airport Authority board attorney, to the stage to speak about his long history with Rogers.

Bengston had the chance to witness Rogers early in his career. He saw a fiery young spirit who would do jobs no one else wanted to take on when Rogers first began at the Jefferson County, Colo., airport, commonly known as the Jeffco Airport.

"I did have an opportunity to observe Tim when he was a rookie at the Jeffco Airport," Bengston said. "He had the responsibility of doing everything and anything that no one else wanted to do. But, unlike here in Salina, he got to drive all the cool stuff, so that was fun to observe him in that role."

Rogers moved to another position at the Greeley County Airport before switching to Salina in 1985. For 40 years, Bengston said Rogers worked tirelessly to bring Salina Airport and industrial complex activities closer together.

Through his efforts, the Salina Airport Authority brought thousands of jobs to the region, living up to Rogers' mission in 1985 — to create jobs and payroll for the community, region and state.

Multiple local leaders recognized this success during the retirement ceremony. Executive Director of the Salina Kansas Community Economic Development Organization Mitch Robinson and City of Salina Mayor Bill Longbine spoke about how Rogers brought successful enterprises to the region and completely transformed the city's industrial area.

Longbine read a letter addressed to Rogers from the City of Salina staff.

"On behalf of the citizens and businesses of Salina, we appreciate your generous service in fulfilling the Salina Airport Authority's vision and mission for the past 39 years," Longbine said. "Our community has directly benefited from your leadership, hard work, commitment and dedication to military operations and civilian aviation has made Salina one of the most progressive airport industrial parks in the nation."

Longbine then handed over a key to the city alongside a few other gifts to celebrate Rogers' retirement.

Two special guests attended Rogers' retirement celebration, U.S. Senators Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran.

Both senators worked closely with Rogers throughout his career to help revitalize and improve the Salina Regional Airport and its industrial park.

Sen. Marshall addressed the crowd before Sen. Moran and said he believed Salina Regional Airpot housed Kansas' fastest-growing and most successful industrial park.

"As I had some time on the road, coming here to greet and congratulate you, I thought to myself, 'How would you explain who Tim Rogers is?' and I thought about this old Nike commercial, 'Just Do It,'" Sen. Marshall said. "The first time I met Tim, he laid out kind of a two or three-year plan, and I came back in two or three years, and he'd done it and then started his next project."

He congratulated Rogers on his retirement, shook his hand and handed the microphone to the next speaker — Sen. Moran.

Sen. Moran spoke about his history and collaboration with Rogers, beginning early in each career and aiming to continue their partnership for more than two decades.

"I was cutting a ribbon yesterday in Garden City — they have a new airport terminal, and the conversation was about Tim Rogers," Sen. Moran said. "The leadership that he provided and the role model that he plays in just aviation across the state. That's not really part of his job he's just a person that cares about other people and wants to make certain that good things happen at home."

The last speaker to introduce himself, Ben Sauceda, the president and CEO of the Kansas Aviation Museum, brought a surprise to Rogers, even though Carlin mentioned that Rogers wasn't a big fan of surprises.

Sauceda announced that Rogers is on the roster as a Kansas Aviation Museum Hall of Fame inductee. The organization will hold an event this fall to memorialize Rogers' career.

Rogers then addressed the crowd last. With his official call sign, Airport One, already transferred to the Deputy Executive Director Pieter Miller — he had high hopes for what came next for the Airport Authority.

"A function the Airport Authority was charged with, in 1985 when it organized, was to create jobs and payroll for the community, region and state, to dampen or recover from the loss of 5,000 jobs with the closure of Schilling Air Force Base," Rogers said. "I think we're reaching that level, and the diamond is shining much brighter."

Officially, Rogers will complete his career with the Airport Authority on Monday, July 1.

Saline County Jail Bookings, June 29

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."

In 1974, Salina Public Schools USD 305 sold about 24 acres of land to the City of Salina to build a new park. One year later, the city found the park's namesake through a local tragedy.

Saline County Commission Chair Joe Hay shared his story of the day Salina Police Department Patrolman Jerry Ivey died in the line of duty, leading to the namesake of Jerry Ivey Memorial Park.

Today, each May, Salina and Saline County Law Enforcement officers, deputies and staff gather to memorialize the death of officers from the United States and the local area.

While working at a 777 Gas Station in town, Hay said he regularly met with Ivey since he would stop by the convenience store to get coffee and chat with the station attendees.

Friday morning, June 13, 1975, Patrolman Ivey arrived at the 777 Gas Station after pulling over a vehicle in a traffic stop.

"We were having a cup of coffee and standing around, and that's when we noticed a police car pull another car over into a parking lot," Hay said. "Of course, I had to be nosey, and I had to walk out and see what was going on."

Hay walked out of the gas station and witnessed the exchange next to a nearby phone booth. He saw Ivey exit his patrol car and approach the parked vehicle — Hay said Ivey said something before the encounter changed.

"About that time, shots rang out," Hay said. "I hit the ground where the telephone was and hid behind the telephone down on the ground."

"Some shots were exchanged, and I actually watched — it would have been the guy that did it, Roy Earl Shultz. [I] watched him come around the front of Jerry's car to where Jerry was."

Hay wasn't sure if Shultz had wounded Ivey at the time, but Hay witnessed Shultz fire a single fatal gunshot wound to Ivey.

According to Hay, Shultz then took Ivey's shotgun from the police car and drove away in the vehicle Ivey pulled over. Hay then rushed to Ivey's side, grabbed the patrol car radio and called for help.

The dispatcher immediately instructed him to get off the communication lines, but Hay said he continued to ask for an ambulance and described the scene to the dispatcher.

"After the third or fourth time that she asked me to get off, I could hear the ambulance coming," Hay said. "At that time, I could tell Jerry wasn't breathing."

"The ambluance got there, did what they needed to do, and went from there. It was — it just seemed to be so fast — it seemed like it was just 'Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!' and then it was over with."

Hay said he participated in some trial proceedings after the event due to his proximity but remained close to Ivey's family and stays in touch with Ivey's sons today.

A cohort of Kansas law enforcement agencies eventually located and arrested Shultz for the crime. 

According to the Smoky Hill Museum, the city installed a bronze plaque telling Ivey's story at Jerry Ivey Memorial Park, alongside its various features, trails and scenic areas that many Salina residents and visitors enjoy today.

Throughout the last quarter of the 20th Century, the City of Salina built walking and jogging paths, various sporting courts, picnic shelters, a large pavilion and playground equipment.

 </figure>By SALINA POSTIn 1974, Salina Public Schools USD 305 sold about 24 acres of land to the City of Salina to build a new park. One year later, the city found the park's namesake through a local tragedy.Saline County Commission Chair Joe Hay shared his story of the day Salina Police Department Patrolman Jerry Ivey died in the line of duty, leading to the namesake of Jerry Ivey Memorial Park.Today, each May, Salina and Saline County Law Enforcement officers, deputies and staff gather to memorialize the death of officers from the United States and the local area.<figure>

 </figure>READ MORE: <a href="https://salinapost.com/posts/13c09b52-5ea2-4919-973d-92abfb47e5fe">Peace Officer Memorial Ceremony honors fallen local officers from Salina</a><h2>A first-hand account of Ivey's death</h2>While working at a 777 Gas Station in town, Hay said he regularly met with Ivey since he would stop by the convenience store to get coffee and chat with the station attendees.Friday morning, June 13, 1975, Patrolman Ivey arrived at the 777 Gas Station after pulling over a vehicle in a traffic stop."We were having a cup of coffee and standing around, and that's when we noticed a police car pull another car over into a parking lot," Hay said. "Of course, I had to be nosey, and I had to walk out and see what was going on."Hay walked out of the gas station and witnessed the exchange next to a nearby phone booth. He saw Ivey exit his patrol car and approach the parked vehicle — Hay said Ivey said something before the encounter changed."About that time, shots rang out," Hay said. "I hit the ground where the telephone was and hid behind the telephone down on the ground.""Some shots were exchanged, and I actually watched — it would have been the guy that did it, Roy Earl Shultz. [I] watched him come around the front of Jerry's car to where Jerry was."Hay wasn't sure if Shultz had wounded Ivey at the time, but Hay witnessed Shultz fire a single fatal gunshot wound to Ivey.According to Hay, Shultz then took Ivey's shotgun from the police car and drove away in the vehicle Ivey pulled over. Hay then rushed to Ivey's side, grabbed the patrol car radio and called for help.The dispatcher immediately instructed him to get off the communication lines, but Hay said he continued to ask for an ambulance and described the scene to the dispatcher."After the third or fourth time that she asked me to get off, I could hear the ambulance coming," Hay said. "At that time, I could tell Jerry wasn't breathing.""The ambluance got there, did what they needed to do, and went from there. It was — it just seemed to be so fast — it seemed like it was just 'Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!' and then it was over with."Hay said he participated in some trial proceedings after the event due to his proximity but remained close to Ivey's family and stays in touch with Ivey's sons today.A cohort of Kansas law enforcement agencies eventually located and arrested Shultz for the crime. According to the Smoky Hill Museum, the city installed a bronze plaque telling Ivey's story at Jerry Ivey Memorial Park, alongside its various features, trails and scenic areas that many Salina residents and visitors enjoy today.Throughout the last quarter of the 20th Century, the City of Salina built walking and jogging paths, various sporting courts, picnic shelters, a large pavilion and playground equipment.

910 KINA Saturday Morning Show Lineup

“I am delighted to continue to create and share memorable performances and experiences with the Salina Symphony this year,” said Yaniv Segal, music director. “From classics to newer works, Cabaret to Disney, and Tchaikovsky to Mozart, we invite you to explore the amazing colors of music together with us and enter the Kaleidoscope that is a symphony orchestra.”

The Kaleidoscope season opens with “Fantastique” October 6 featuring colorful and imaginative music. Salina percussionist Hannah Applequist will command the spotlight in Paul Dooley’s new percussion concerto, The Soaring Souls, an energetic yet lyrical composition inspired by the tragic love story of Francesca da Rimini. 

The adventure continues with Symphonie Fantastique, a highly evocative and expressive work full of fantastical imagery, written by Berlioz in response to his own experiences of heartbreak and unrequited love. Prepare to be transported to a world of passion, drama and excitement with this unforgettable concert.

The Symphony will kick things off November 10 for “Lights, Camera, Cabaret.” with music from the Tony Award-winning musical Cabaret followed by two new works by Kyle Saulnier, a multi-instrumentalist and composer who fuses American music with industrial rock. 

Singer Janie Brokenicky and dancer Alison Hiatt will tell the story of Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins, an accessible and satirical tale that uses wit, theatrical flair, dancing, cabaret music and a Greek chorus to explore the complexities of human nature and society.

Celebrate the holiday season with the Salina Symphony and Ballet Salina production of Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet, The Nutcracker, Dec. 14 &amp; 15. This beloved story of a young girl’s Christmas Eve dream never fails to touch the heart and create a lasting memory for the whole family.

Uplifting tunes and exuberant rhythms abound “Rocking Tchaikovsky” January 12. Following a lively opener by Maestro Segal, the incredible principal cellist of The Cleveland Orchestra, Mark Kosower, will perform Friedrich Gulda’s Cello Concerto, a wild and catchy work described by the composer as “jazz, a minuet, rock, a smidgen of polka and a march.” 

On the second half, Tchaikovsky’s monumental and heroic Fifth Symphony paints the ultimate picture of victory over strife. From the lush orchestration to the soaring melodies, you won’t want this concert to end.

The mainstage season ends May 4 with Mozart’s majestic final work, the Requiem, a masterpiece of both solace and intensity reflective of the timeless themes of life, death and redemption. On the first half, the program opens with a spiritual work by Florence Price featuring principal clarinetist Chris Johnson. Young virtuoso Lun Li will then bring Joseph Bologne’s remarkable and “Mozartean” Ninth Violin Concerto to life.

Encore performances begin September 28 with Chamber Music in the Courtyard, featuring two of Mozart’s most beloved chamber works. The woodwind quintet will present The Melting Pot by Alyssa Morris, K-State associate professor of oboe, with movements titled “Bubbly,” “Sweet” and “Crunchy.” Following the concert, enjoy dinner in Downtown Salina to top off this delightful autumn evening.

Following rave reviews from last year’s event, Andrew Lipke will return to the Stiefel Theatre on January 18 to continue the conversation about how music transcends boundaries. Performing alongside the Salina Symphony String Quartet (featuring Maestro Segal), Andrew will unveil the deep-rooted connection between the history of the string quartet in both classical and contemporary music through an evening of storytelling and performances of rock works, including original music by Andrew himself. Out of the Box returns April 26 at Theatre Salina’s Black Box with wide-ranging and exhilarating music championed by Alarm Will Sound, an innovative chamber ensemble described by the New York Times as “one of the most vital and original ensembles on the American music scene” and “as close to being a rock band as a chamber orchestra can be.” 

From dance beats to Ten Thousand Birds, a work about the birds of the Great Plains by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams, get ready to hear new music that is as fun and exciting to listen to as it is to play.

The annual Symphony at Sunset D-Day Commemoration Concert will be held June 7 on the grounds of the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene. The outdoor event will feature patriotic and popular music from the Salina Symphony and the Fort Riley 1st Infantry Division Band.

The deadline to redeem your Saline Stars is June 30, 2024 There are over $50,000 worth of Saline Stars still in people's wallets. If you can't spend your Stars, consider donating them to a local nonprofit like First Tee of Salina, Salina Area United Way, or Big Brothers Big Sisters of Salina.

Sending Stars to local nonprofits is a great way to support community organizations, whether you’re in town or out of town.

As of today, residents have redeemed a total of 268,854.53 Stars, generating over $6.3 million in economic activity. However, there are still $50,797.78 worth of Stars&nbsp;remaining in wallets.

While the Choose Saline County app program is ending, Saline County remains committed to supporting local businesses and the community. Stay tuned for future updates on new initiatives.

Final Reminder: redeem Saline stars before June 30

On Thursday, Sacred Heart officially announced the hiring of Daryl Hoelting as the new head softball coach of the Lady Knights.

The statement, issued by the school reads "We are extremely excited for Mr. Hoelting to lead our Softball program. Coach Hoelting will bring in a vast amount of leadership, energy, dedication, and commitment to the Sacred Heart Softball team and school community. His passion for helping develop student-athletes is clear and he brings a strong desire for success inside and outside of the classroom. Hoelting played baseball at the collegiate level for Neosho County in Chanute, KS, and Marymount College in Salina, KS.

He will be assisted by Betsy and Conner Martin. Betsy played softball at the collegiate level for the University of Arizona, in Tucson AZ, and later played at Kansas University where she earned All Big 12 honors. 

Conner is a Sacred Heart alum,&nbsp;graduating in 2008, who went on to play baseball at the collegiate level for Fort Hays State.

Daryl Hoelting hired to lead Lady Knights softball program

 On Thursday, June 27, the Salina Police Department (SPD) responded to a vehicle theft at 1727 West Crawford in Salina.

 At approximately 9:00 a.m. yesterday, officers were dispatched to the scene where a Red 2002 Chrysler Town and Country was reported stolen. Salina Police Capt. James Feldman said the victim, a 41-year-old Salina resident, witnessed the theft.&nbsp;

"He [victim] pulled up to the business, left his car running and keys in the car and went in for a short time and then observed a male and female, get into his car and drive off," Feldman said.&nbsp;

SPD immediately issued an alert to all units notifying them of the stolen Chrysler.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 Not long after, an SPD officer spotted a vehicle matching the description at the Budget King, located at 809 North Broadway. Feldman said the officer observed several individuals loading items into the vehicle. 

"The officer wasn't able to determine immediately if that was the exact stolen vehicle," Feldman said. "When it pulled out, the officer was able to confirm that it was a stolen vehicle and&nbsp; a stop was made in the 700 block of North Broadway Avenue."

Using surveillance footage from a nearby Kwik Shop, officers identified the suspects as Robert Kimzey, a 30-year-old male, and Crystal Hill, a 37-year-old female, both from Wellington, Kansas. The third individual present was determined to be uninvolved in the theft.

SPD officers arrested Kimzey and Hill with requested charges of felony theft. They were subsequently booked into the Saline County Jail. 

Feldman said the vehicle was recovered by officers within an hour of being reported stolen.&nbsp;

Hello and happy Friday, everybody, it’s Tyler Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

Massive news broke on Thursday when A jury in U.S. District Court ordered the NFL to pay nearly $4.8 billion in damages after ruling that the league violated antitrust laws in distributing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on a premium subscription service.

The lawsuit covered 2.4 million residential subscribers and 48,000 businesses who paid for the package of out-of-market games from the 2011 through 2022 seasons on DirecTV. The lawsuit claimed the league broke antitrust laws by selling its package of Sunday games at an inflated price. The subscribers also say the league restricted competition by offering “Sunday Ticket” only on a satellite provider.

The NFL said it would appeal the verdict. That appeal would go to the 9th Circuit and then possibly as high as the Supreme Court.

More locally Kyle Isbel and Maikel Garcia hit back-to-back triples to start a sixth-inning rally, and Vinnie Pasquantino delivered the go-ahead sacrifice fly that sent the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 win over the AL Central-leading Cleveland Guardians on Thursday night.

And finally The 51st annual Kansas Shrine Bowl will kick off this Saturday, and our area will be well represented, with a slew of players lining the West All-Star team roster.

On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, a business burglary was reported at Rod’s Convenience Store, 1401 S. Santa Fe, Salina, Kansas. A glass window along the west side of the building had been broken out between midnight and 7:00 a.m. on June 26, 2024. 

Multiple cigars including a “4K” cigar display and a ZigZag cigar display were taken from the business. The stolen cigar brands include 4K Cigar, ZigZag Cigars, Black and Milde, and Cigarillo. The total loss was over $300.

Cigar burglary in central Salina is this week's Crimestoppers

Shawn Steward with AAA Kansas notes that the period that includes Independence Day will be quite busy for travelers this year.

"We're projecting nearly 71 million people are going to travel sometime during that period. 685,000 or so Kansans will travel," Steward said. "About 85% will be driving. 60.6 million people nationwide and about 585,000 Kansans will be driving to their destinations during the holiday."

There are also more people flying these days.

"TSA has been seeing record numbers," Steward said.&nbsp; "In fact, this past Sunday was the most that TSA has ever screened before. 2.99 million went through airports and they're expecting more than 3 million. So another record this Friday, the 28. So air travel is extremely popular and extremely busy right now."

The busy times with traffic are the ones you would expect.

"When people getting off work mixes with holiday travel, those are usually the main times to avoid," Steward said. "Those are going to be the busiest times, especially if your travel takes you through metro areas. So we're talking about Wednesday afternoon and evening of July 3, and then a lot of people will be returning on Sunday, July 7. Those are two times that could be especially busy, especially in larger metro areas."

Travel numbers are back to pre-pandemic levels, if not a little more across the country.
