Saline County Jail Bookings, July 3

Earlier today, Kansas Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland, alongside leaders from across the state, unveiled the <a href="https://lovekansas.com/">"Love, Kansas"</a> talent attraction campaign. The initiative aims to boost Kansas' population by inviting past residents to choose the Sunflower State as their future home.

Wyatt Thompson, voice of the K-State Wildcats, hyped up the crowd of Kansans and served as emcee for the event held on Monday, July 1.&nbsp;

"Today we are launching a new campaign that is going to bring these people home to Kansas by helping them rediscover why this state is the best place to call home," Thompson said.&nbsp;

During the campaign launch at the Flint Hills Discovery Center in Manhattan, Lt. Gov. Toland shared his personal journey about coming back to Kansas after he was inspired by a phone call from a family friend.

"I am a 1995 graduate of Iola High School in Allen County. I have two degrees from KU, I married a girl at KU who is from Pittsburg and as soon as we finished graduate school, we moved out of the state," Toland said. "We went to the East Coast and we were there for the better part of a decade."

Toland said after the birth of their daughter Caroline, he and his wife decided to come back home to Kansas.

"Caroline was learning to walk in our 16-foot wide row house, when one night, I got a phone call from somebody back in Iola, a friend who said, 'I'm sure you've never considered this. It's kind of a crazy idea. You'd have to move.' and&nbsp; he said, 'Well, I wonder if you would ever consider coming back to Kansas, and specifically to Iola.'"

Toland, a seventh-generation Kansan, said he felt that Kansas has always been in his heart but wasn't always in his mind as a place that had opportunity.&nbsp;

"It wasn't until that phone call that it clicked and I realized that we should be back home. We should be building our life for our daughter back in Kansas," Toland said. "And that's just what we did. It's been 16 years, and that was the best decision we've ever made."

Love Kansas' goal is to highlight Kansas as an exceptional place to live, work, and raise a family, with a special emphasis on "boomerangs" - individuals with previous ties to the state.

Love Kansas focuses on the state's abundant job opportunities, high quality of life, excellent education system and affordable communities. The campaign is locally driven but strategically targets key markets across the U.S., with a strong focus on digital and social media platforms. 

"It's simple: we need more humans in Kansas to keep up with the phenomenal economic growth our state is experiencing," Lt. Gov. Toland said. "The best way to do that is to first approach Kansans who left the state for economic opportunities elsewhere and invite them to build a life in a place they know and have connections to, whether in their hometown or elsewhere in the state. With the Love, Kansas campaign, we aren't just extending an invitation to those who once called Kansas home to come back--we re also inviting families from around the country to build their lives in the Sunflower State."

During the launch event, Toland announced that the first 50 communities to partner with Love Kansas will be eligible for a $5,000 grant to assist in their efforts to attract new residents to their community. Nineteen pilot communities and seven universities already joined the initiative and are planning events that align with the campaign's theme.

Salina Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Renee Duxler, Salina Downtown Inc. Executive Director Leslie Bishop, and Salina Community Economic Developement Coorporation Executive Director Mitch Robinson all attended the event. 

Duxler said the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce is working to create a local, grassroots collaborative in Saline County to bring this initiative to fruition.&nbsp;

"We're working on creating a collaborative among all of our community and organizations that includes Salina Downtown, Salina Community Economic Developement Organization, the City of Salina, Saline County," Duxler said. "We're all selling the same asset. We're going to have this collaborative marketing, that we will all be able to utilize."

Duxler said the $5,000 grant awarded to Salina from the Love Kansas program will be used to create marketing and outreach campaigns to target Salina's own boomerangs.

"It's easier, as the lieutenant governor said, than casting this wide net on everybody in the United States," Duxler said. "The people that we know are familiar with us [Kansas] and might want to come back to raise a family or be with their family."

Influencer and journalist engagement and targeted in-person events both within and outside of Kansas play a crucial role in reaching potential boomerangs.

Bishop, who is a boomerang resident herself, said she was encouraged and motivated by the enthusiasm and energy at the kick off event.

"It's incredible. I feel like Kansas is finally getting the recognition it deserves to be a great state to live in, work, play, raise your family," Bishop said. "I'm a boomerang resident, and I left and was never going to come back and here I am today. All of us who live here in Kansas, wherever you are, know how wonderful this state really is. We are not a flyover state anymore."

After graduating from Salina Central High School in 1982, Bishop moved to Park City, Utah, and was in the hotel business there for six years and lived in a ski resort town.

"Then I came back because my mom opened up a local business and my dad, had a local real estate office, "Bishop said. "It was great to be back and we raised our son here. There's a lot to do in Salina. We have a great community, there's work to be done. But together, we can do it."

 A primary goal for the campaign is for communities across the state to do direct outreach to past residents they have a personal connection with, inviting them to return home.

"The collaboration already on display between so many partners underscores the enthusiasm for this campaign," Kansas Tourism Director Bridgette Jobe said. "There are so many amazing things happening in Kansas right now; Love, Kansas gives us the chance to let people throughout the country know about them."

In his closing remarks at the announcement, Toland asked all Kansans to call up a friend or family member and make the pitch for them to return to the state they once called home.&nbsp;

"The most important thing for you to say might just be, 'Hey, there's good things happening in town and we miss you,'" Toland said. "We want you to come home. We want you to love Kansas. That's what's most important. Make that call. Send that text. Get out there and together we're gonna change Kansas."

 </figure>In his closing remarks at the announcement, Toland asked all Kansans to call up a friend or family member and make the pitch for them to return to the state they once called home.&nbsp;"The most important thing for you to say might just be, 'Hey, there's good things happening in town and we miss you,'" Toland said. "We want you to come home. We want you to love Kansas. That's what's most important. Make that call. Send that text. Get out there and together we're gonna change Kansas."

CORRECTION: Fourth of July fireworks regulations

WASHINGTON D.C. — The U. S. Postal Service filed notice in April with the Postal Regulatory Commission of mailing services price changes to take effect July 14, 2024. The new rates include a 5-cent increase in the price of a First-Class Mail Forever stamp from 68 cents to 73 cents.

The proposed adjustments, approved by the governors of the Postal Service, would raise mailing services product prices approximately 7.8 percent. If favorably reviewed by the commission, the price changes would include:

U.S. Postal Service Recommends New Prices for July 2024

Letters (1 oz.) will go from 68 cents to 73 cents.

Letters (metered 1 oz.) will go from 64 cents to 69 cents.

Domestic Postcards will go from 53 cents to 56 cents.&nbsp;

International Postcards will go from $1.55 to $1.65.&nbsp;

International Letter (1 oz.) will go from $1.55 to $1.65.&nbsp;

The additional-ounce price for single-piece letters increases from 24 cents to 28 cents. 

The Postal Service is also seeking price adjustments for Special Services products, including Certified Mail and money order fees. Notably, there will be no price increase for Post Office Box rental fees, and the Postal Service will apply a price reduction of 10 percent for postal insurance when mailing an item.

NWS-Wichita Fourth of July holiday forecast

Daddy Bud Day, a free community block party in north Salina, is set to take place at Pacific Park, 701 W. Pacific on Saturday, July 6 at 10 a.m.

This event is hosted by James Curtis, also known as Cash Hollistah, in collaboration with the Curtis family and Salina Shares.

Beginning at 10 a.m., Daddy Bud Day will have free hamburgers and hot dogs provided and grilled onsite by the Salina Police Department. Beverages will also be provided. Dominoes and spades tables will be on hand, in addition to basketball and various water and lawn games for attendees to enjoy

The event, which will feature prize giveaways courtesy of Salina Shares and words from members of the Curtis family, will culminate in the inaugural DBD All-Star Basketball Game on the park's basketball court at 2pm. 

Sponsored by Be Wealth, the All-Star Game will pit Hollistah's team, "Big Bank," against his younger brother John Curtis III's team, "Northside Mafia." The game will feature players such as former Harlem Globetrotter and Salina native, Hannah Mortimer, and Salina rapper Dee Eazy.

Daddy Bud Day was a yearly event started by the late John Curtis Sr., more commonly referred to as "Bud". The event was started in 1967 and originall served as a program that sponsored activities for youth and adults in the community. 

Over the years, the event morphed into a community-wide activity during the Fourth of July weekend for African-Americans in Salina. The event contained free swimming at the former Carver Center pool, free food and drinks, paid for out of Bud's own pocket, vendors and an evening dance. 

Bud's son, Salina pastor and musician John Curtis, Jr. took part in the events as the DJ. Part of Daddy Bud Day was eventually sponsored by his job, the former manufacturing plant, Wyatt Manufacturing.

After Curtis Sr.'s death in 1971, the tradition continued for a few more years, ultimately ending in 1974. 

At the time of the final Bud Day celebration, over 400 people were in attendance. In 2014, he was posthumously awarded a Juneteenth Award by the Salina Juneteenth Committee.

Daddy Bud Day was revived in 2023 by his grandson, James.

"Hearing stories about my grandfather and what he did for the community, coupled with the lack of events that bring different parts of the community together, especially in north Salina, was what made me want to resurrect it," Curtis said. "I wanted to continue the legacy left by him, my father, and my mother the late Jeannette Curtis." 

Efforts are currently underway to rename Pacific Park to Curtis Park after "Bud" and his father, John Curtis, Jr. Renovations of the park are also in discussion.

🎙King in the Community — Mike Schrage discusses Friends of the Salina Animal Shelter, the Cozy Inn civil case and more

Washburn University pianist Lucy Tan will be performing selections by Beethoven, Chopin, Clara Schumann, Amy Beach, and Chen Yi in the Sandzén Gallery,&nbsp; on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. 

An exceptional musician, her young performing career began by making a live WGBH radio debut at age 11 on “Morning Pro Musica,” followed by her concert debut at age 12 with the Brockton (Massachusetts) Symphony Orchestra. She was later featured on NPR’s “From the Top” and WBGH’s “Classics in the Morning.”

Currently, Dr. Tan, is active as part of the Washburn University Piano Quartet, and also collaborates with Dr. Zsolt Eder, concertmaster of the Topeka Symphony. She was previously featured in Chamber Music Amarillo’s concert series, was a two-time recipient of the Masonic Cultural Enrichment Grant, was showcased at Grace Episcopal Cathedral’s concert series, and featured on WPTA USA-Missouri’s concert series on the piano sonatas of Mozart.

Currently, she is the Director of Keyboard Studies at Washburn University in Topeka, where she teaches applied piano and a number of keyboard courses.

On Saturday, June 29, a Saline County Sheriff's Office deputy witnessed a 2005 Ford vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign. When the deputy conducted a traffic stop and approached the car, the driver took off, leading to a quick pursuit and crash into a curb.

Saline County Undersheriff Brent Melander said the deputy first saw the vehicle at 1:20 a.m. Saturday morning at the intersection of West Crawford and Custer streets. Once the driver sped away, the deputy called dispatch to request help.

"The deputy jumped back in his vehicle, notified dispatch and surrounding units of the chase and began to pursue the vehicle," Melander said. 

The driver did not get far, only about a block away, where the car crashed into a curb and some vegetation near the road at 10 Tenlawns Place. Melander said the deputy reported that once the vehicle was no longer operational, the driver ran away from the car.

Deputies said the passenger did not run away, but through investigations, they found that 28-year-old Monica May, from Salina, allegedly had marijuana.

Through further investigations, Melander said that deputies found 25-year-old Salina resident Trenton Ponting as the vehicle's driver.

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers later located Ponting at the intersection of Crawford and Ninth streets and arrested him.

"Trenton was arrested for flee and elude, DUI, possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, failure to stopping at an accident, failed to yield to a stop sign and operation without driver's license," Melander said.

Salina man arrested after fleeing from SO deputies, arrested by SPD officers

Kansas Farm Bureau’s (KFB) Voters Organized To Elect Farm Bureau Friends (VOTE FBF) political action committee today announces its endorsements for Kansas Senate and House elections.

Since 1993, VOTE FBF has endorsed and supported candidates who support KFB policy and understand the needs of Kansas agriculture. The 10-member VOTE FBF board also values the recommendations of members across the state based on their personal interactions with candidates.

The world of US Men’s National Team Soccer received a rude awakening in Kansas City last night after a 1-0 loss to Uruguay eliminated the team from the Copa America without reaching the knockout stage.

This came on the heels of a 2-1 loss to Panama and an uninspiring 2-0 win over Bolivia, which all culminated in the US being eliminated from a group many expected them to waltz through on home soil.

Many say this calls into question the direction of US Men’s Soccer since the 2022 World Cup, and much of that criticism has fallen on head coach Gregg Berhalter, who may not be around for the next World Cup

Speaking of soccer in Kansas City the KC Current lead the National Women’s Soccer League standings with 35 points and a record of 10-5-0. The Current will be back in action against the Orlando Pride this Saturday.

And finally, a look ahead to this Saturday where the Salina Liberty will open their playoff push at Tony’s Pizza Events Center with Southwest Kansas at 3:00.

Farmers and ranchers in Kansas are amazing people. Yes, I am tooting our own horn, but we deserve it. We are hard-working and all too humble people, and the work we do is something our fellow humans literally cannot live without. We grow food.

I say all of this because my colleagues in agriculture will not. I know they are too busy working long hours doing their job, including working up to seven days a week. We wait for someone else to acknowledge our good work, and that is an admirable trait. So, I am going to say it for all of us.

Just look at the last five years. We have survived some of the worst weather and drought in recorded history, a pandemic, supply chain disruptions, increased costs for everything and high interest rates, and we are still here. What is more, we are producing more food, using fewer inputs and less land all while protecting the air, soil and water around us.

Our jobs will get harder in the upcoming years because we will need to produce even more food —more food than we have ever produced in history. We will also be asked to do it with less land all while improving the natural resources with which we are entrusted. That is a heavy lift.

Do you know what? We will do it, and we will do it better than anyone can even imagine. Farmers and ranchers have stepped up and met every challenge thrown our way. We are asked to do the impossible, and we come through with flying colors each time. That is something to be proud of.

We put our backs into the harness and pull our heavy loads, never expecting any recognition or accolades. Its time we recognized the good work we do and let the rest of the world know how proud we are of the food we grow. It’s not bragging, it’s pride, and that is not something we should be shy to tell the rest of the world about.
