Our fall calving season has just wrapped up with another successful year that has now brought views of lively baby calves dotting our pasture.

Since our calving season usually falls within the same time as the start of our fall harvest, it is my responsibility to keep watch of the cattle in the pasture while my husband and father-in-law focus on harvest.

It’s a task I have enjoyed ever since I was a kid when I’d keep watch on my cows and anticipate the arrival of little ones. I remember the excitement of riding the bus home from school to see a new wobbly calf in the pasture or the pride I had when a friend and I would sit behind the fence and be able to quietly watch a live birth.

I still have that feeling of anticipation to this day when I go out into the pasture in the mornings to see if there’s new life. I also have that sense of pride as my son and I go out into the pasture and sit atop a hill looking over the cattle during our evening check knowing what I experienced and observed as a child is being passed down to my children.

I always hope for an uneventful calving season with mother cows not needing my assistance. Some years are better than others. This year none of the cows required my assistance, but it was definitely an eventful season, nonetheless.

My son’s first bottle calf, Sunflower, has become a great cow and has proven to be an excellent mother over the last three seasons of calving. This year, my son and I discovered Sunflower and her new handsome red bull calf while checking the cattle one evening.

She had already cleaned up that little bull calf and he had figured out how to walk without wobbling and was nursing by the time my son and I found them. As we sat and watched the pair for a while, we commented on how this cow was a phenomenal mama even though she had been an orphan.

The next morning I went out again to check cattle but couldn't find that little red bull calf anywhere. Instead, Sunflower was nursing another calf — a petite black heifer.

I was a bit perplexed and amazed at the same time that Sunflower would allow a different calf to nurse, but I chalked it up to her being such a good mother. I also told myself that she had hid her red bull calf so well hidden in the tall grass that I couldn’t find him, but I was sure I’d see him during my evening check.

But my son and I couldn’t find that little red calf during our evening check. And Sunflower still had that little black heifer right beside her. I began to realize what was happening. Sunflower had twins. Scenarios ran through my mind. Perhaps she had only claimed the little heifer. Perhaps she hid the red bull calf and forgot where she’d left him. Perhaps coyotes had found him. In any of those scenarios, the outcome for that little bull calf was not promising.

The next morning my son and I awoke early to again go to the pasture and try to find that little red bull calf with no luck. I took the kids to school and returned to the pasture with our dog in the hopes we could find that baby. 

The dog and I walked those 60 acres consisting of tall grass, thick timber and a creek bed. The dog sniffed out the little black heifer who’d been tucked into a tuft of grass, but we couldn’t find the red bull calf.

Two days later there was still no sign of that little guy. Four days later and I’d given up hope. 

Six days later, my husband and son went out during the evening check. I received a text from my husband telling me they’d found the missing red bull calf. I quickly called to see where they’d found him and to find out how badly decomposed he was.

“Oh, he’s alive,” my husband giggled. I couldn’t believe it! When I got home later that evening I went out into the pasture to discover Sunflower with her two strong and healthy calves nursing.

That old cow surely gave us all a story to remember for a very long time and proof, once again, that she is an excellent mother.

Insight: Sunflower and the bull calf

The Saline County Health Department will host a flu shot clinic on Wednesday, October 2, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the 4-H Building in Kenwood Park. The clinic offers both drive-thru and walk-in services, with the drive-thru available for adults aged 19 and older. Parents with children aged 6 months and older can use the walk-in option by entering through the west doors of the 4-H Building.

Participants are encouraged to wear short sleeves and a mask for the clinic. Several health insurance plans are accepted, including BC/BS, Aetna, UMR, Ambetter, United Healthcare, Medicare, KanCare/Medicaid, and others. For those out of network or without insurance, flu shots are available for a fee at the time of service.

The City of Salina announced this afternoon that a petition to repeal sections of the Salina City Code related to Breed Specific Regulations fell short of the required number of valid signatures needed for consideration.

On Monday, September 23, 2024, the City received a referendum petition that would require the Governing Body to either pass an ordinance to repeal sections of the Salina City Code related to Breed Specific Regulations or call for a special election for voter consideration of the ordinance. 

For the petition to be valid, the Saline County Election Officer must validate the signatures in accordance with K.S.A. 25-3601. The petition was delivered to the Saline County Election Officer on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

According to K.S.A. 12-3013, the petition would need to be signed by electors equal to 25% of those who voted in the preceding regular City election, requiring 1,391 signatures in this instance.

 On Monday, September 30, 2024, the Saline County Election Officer certified that the required number of signatures was not met. Of the 1,814 signatures submitted, only 1,369 were accepted, with 445 signatures being rejected for reasons including unregistered voters, mismatched names or signatures, canceled voter registrations, and incorrect districts. This left the petition 22 signatures short of the required number.

Under K.S.A. 25-3602, the petitioner is not permitted to submit additional signatures to make up the shortfall. Therefore, the petition will not move forward, and the ordinance related to Breed Specific Regulations will remain in place.

In a joint statement, Debrah Corrales and Tyler Sartain, both advocates against the ban, said they would not give up their efforts.

“&nbsp;While we are disheartened by the shortage of 22 signatures we don’t plan on giving up. We will be looking at all options regarding getting BSL repealed in Salina.&nbsp; There were 445 names that were removed due to either not being registered to vote, outside of the voting district, or not legible to read. We will be asking for recount and hopefully we can see if they’d be willing to do it. For the citizens we need you to email the city commission and demand a special election vote it’s the right thing to do. The citizens want this issue resolved and there’s five people standing in your way of getting the ban lifted.&nbsp; The commission believes that if they lift the ban they would be held responsible if this breed of dog hurts someone which they cannot be held liable in any way. If the commission stays silent and does not act to put this up for a public vote they are complacent in infringing on your rights, they’re ok with the city taking your dogs away, and fine with them being euthanized. As long as this law stands your rights are being infringed upon and your dog’s lives are in danger. There have been 56 BSL repeals in Kansas due to this law not working. Our animal shelter cannot house all these dogs for long and we fear that euthanasia will make a comeback if this law isn’t lifted.

It’s up to you the citizens to act and help these dogs. Contact the commission now and let them know you want change!

Petition to repeal Salina's breed-specific regulations falls short on valid signatures

A 27-year-old Salina man was injured after his motorcycle collided with a deer west of Salina on Sunday evening, according to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

At approximately 7:49 p.m. on Sunday, a motorcyclist was riding his blue 2007 Honda 1300 motorcycle westbound on Old 40, about four-tenths of a mile west of Amos Road, when a deer suddenly jumped out from the ditch.&nbsp;

"Unfortunately for him, he didn't strike it with the motorcycle. The deer ran into his left leg," Soldan said. "It hit him in the side. He was able to maintain balance on the bike and pull over, but it did fracture his leg."

The man was transported to Salina Regional Health Center by Salina EMS for treatment. Sheriff Soldan confirmed that the motorcycle itself was not damaged, aside from some blood from the deer. A friend of the motorcylist was able to retrieve the motorcycle and ride it home.

Salina man injured in motorcycle-deer collision

The Salina Police Department (SPD) is investigating a shooting threat made against the Salina Central High School homecoming dance, which resulted in the arrest of a 16-year-old female student.

According to SPD Captain James Feldman, the FBI notified SPD just after 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, after receiving a tip about a threat made via Snapchat.

 The threat, which was directed at the Salina Central homecoming dance, stated an intention to "shoot up the dance." The FBI promptly relayed this information to the Salina Police Department.

Officers quickly identified the suspect, a 16-year-old Salina Central High student, and located her at her residence on Hillside Drive in Salina. The juvenile was not present at the dance, as the event had not yet begun by the time police were alerted.

"They [suspect] had no access to guns and never made it to the school function," Feldman said&nbsp;

Although it remains unclear when the Snapchat threat was initially made, SPD arrested the student on charges of criminal threat. She was transported to the Saline County Jail and later transferred to the Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City.

Feldman said SPD officers are working to determine when the threat was made.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

"We're trying to follow up on that information right now that may take a while. We're doing search warrants," Feldman said. "Maybe a week, possibly two. It just depends on how quickly we get the warrant to Snapchat."

The Salina Central homecoming dance proceeded as scheduled and concluded at 10 p.m.

At 2:00 p.m. on Sept. 30, USD 305 sent Salina Central High School families a message from Superintendent Linn Exline. 

Nothing matters more than keeping our students and staff safe every day. To make sure you have accurate information, I want to share what details I can regarding the threat made on the evening of Central High’s homecoming.

On Saturday evening, the Salina Police Department notified Salina Public Schools that an investigation into a school threat for the Central High homecoming dance was underway. The district was provided few details about the active police investigation. The SPD worked quickly to ensure safety, and before the dance started, the SPD had the individual in custody.

Several parents reached out to me asking for information about our notification procedures in situations like this. Since the threat was reported to the SPD and they had the student in custody prior to the dance, we did not notify parents.

 I understand that the timing of the SPD press release and news coverage didn’t make it clear that SPD had the student in custody prior to the dance. I also understand that absent a statement from us, the press release was worrisome and you were left with questions about your student’s safety.

It takes all of us working together to keep our students and staff safe. Please take this opportunity to talk to your student(s) about the importance of reporting anything unusual, even if it could be a joke or hoax. Remind them if they hear or see anything, they should tell you, share with a school employee, or even call the police.

 An immediate investigation was undertaken that revealed a 16-year old Central High Student made comments about “shooting everyone at this dance.” 

Further inquiry by officers and school resource officers identified the “dance” to be the Salina Central Homecoming dance. USD305 and school officials were notified, and the juvenile was located by officers away from the school. 

Police arrested the juvenile for alleged criminal threat and transported to the Saline County Jail with eventual transfer to the Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City. 

Based on the investigation, there does not appear to be any further threat to students or staff at Central High, according to Salina Police.

 The Salina Police Department appreciated the collaboration with District and School staff in ensuring the safety of students, and strive for prompt investigations and actions to ensure everyone’s safety.

Bill Pollard to explore early Kansas forts in free Smoky Hill Museum presentation

The replica of the Statue of Liberty sculpture in Oakdale Park will soon be removed for restoration. In collaboration, Salina Arts &amp; Humanities and the Parks &amp; Recreation Department of the City of Salina have selected local artist Rich Bergen to repair and restore the sculpture at his studio in Salina. 

The statue will be removed in early October, and the restoration process is expected to take six to eight weeks. During this time, the identifying plaque will also be removed for cleaning and repair, and necessary concrete work on the base will be completed. Earlier this year, the limestone structure on which Liberty stands was cleaned in preparation for the restoration project.

A commitment to care and maintenance

Salina’s public art collection is subject to harsh weather conditions, which can degrade even the most durable materials over time. The Community Art &amp; Design (CAD) Committee, a mayor-appointed advisory board, has committed to the stewardship of the city’s public art collection. 

Members have been gathering evaluations of each public artwork to support the city departments that manage the collection. The Statue of Liberty was identified as a priority due to its age and significance, being one of the older pieces in the public collection. The statue was part of a nationwide project in the 1950s led by the Boy Scouts of America.

Over the weekend, the Kansas City Royals completed one of the most remarkable turnarounds in major league history Friday night, clinching an American League wild card after big wins over the Washington Nationals.

A year ago, the Royals matched a franchise record with 106 losses. Now, they are headed to the postseason for the first time since winning the 2015 World Series.

Led by second-year manager Matt Quatraro, Kansas City is the first team in baseball history to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/royals-kansas-city-major-league-baseball-playoffs-faf7e1aee9a4322eb969f93e503be055">make the playoffs after posting such a dismal mark</a>&nbsp;the previous season.

The Royals postseason journey begins in Baltimore as KC takes on the Orioles this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday if needed.

The Royals also defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-2 on Sunday in what was supposed to be the regular season finale for both teams.&nbsp;

Saline County Jail Bookings, Sept. 30

Award-winning painter&nbsp;Tim&nbsp;Stone&nbsp;will be the next artist to be featured at The Gallery in Sams Hall of Fine Arts on the Kansas Wesleyan campus.

Stone’s exhibit, “My Own Wilderness,” will open&nbsp;Sept. 30 until Nov. 1.&nbsp;A reception for the artist will be&nbsp;5–6:30 p.m. Oct. 18.

Stone&nbsp;graduated from Wichita State University in 2012 with a BFA and in 2022 with his MFA in Painting, where he is teaching as an adjunct lecturer. He has exhibited extensively, with paintings in several permanent collections, and is represented by Reuben Saunders Gallery. He also is serving as art director for the Commerce Club at The National in Wichita. He won first place in the 2021 Emerging Artists Showcase by the Wichita State Art &amp; Design Advocates.

“I am creating a painterly language emphasizing the hybridization between our physical and digital experiences.”&nbsp;Stone&nbsp;said. “I physically replicate digital languages to express how confusing and lost it can be to operate in a world that is both super-connected and isolating, mediated through a screen.”

Themes of destruction and renewal are evident in his work.

The Gallery is always free and open to the public.

KWU hosts Wichita painter at The Gallery

As KWU's Department of Business and Accounting continues to expand, the department has added its first executive-in-residence. Renee&nbsp;Duxler, president and CEO of the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, will act in that capacity throughout the 2024-25 school year. She will advise the department on strategic planning and relationship building and serve as a guest lecturer in courses, among other responsibilities.

"We are pleased to welcome Renee to the KWU community," said Dr. Michelle Case, chair of the Department of Business and Accounting. "Her multifaceted experience throughout the region will help provide a great knowledge base for our students and for our department as we continue to grow. Having a local community leader believe in our mission is an honor, and we look forward to seeing her contributions throughout the year."

Duxler&nbsp;is a veteran of the regional economic development scene, having served as executive director of the Douglas Design District in Wichita prior to moving to Salina and joining the chamber. While in Wichita,&nbsp;Duxler&nbsp;also served on the Wichita/Sedgwick County Metropolitan Planning Commission and owned a designer resale clothing store for several years. She joined the Salina Chamber in 2020 as the director of economic and workforce development, was named the Chamber's interim CEO in 2023 and the full-time leader in 2024.&nbsp;Duxler&nbsp;received an Inclusive Economic Growth Fellowship in 2021 from the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives.

The announcement of&nbsp;Duxler's involvement with the department is the latest in a series of positive developments over the past few months. The internationally recognized DECA program, housed in the department, now has its own dedicated area for the first time. Prof. Sheila Coomes joined the staff as the assistant department chair, giving KWU better administrative capacity to deepen its MBA program. The university achieved that through the Saline County MBA Scholarship, which gives $100 off per class to any student living or working in Saline County. Discussions are also ongoing with leading local businesses about increased cooperation, both at the graduate and, for internship purposes, the undergraduate levels.

"It's really exciting for me to be able to further connect local business and trade in our region with the students, faculty and alumni at Kansas Wesleyan University," said&nbsp;Duxler. "There is such a wealth of benefit and knowledge that can be exchanged between academia and industry, and I'm looking forward to facilitating and cultivating that exchange in this role."

It is with a heavy heart that the Salina Police Department announces the passing of one of our canines, K-9 Tyrann. Ty was lost on Sept. 18, while on-duty in an accidental fall from an elevated position. Ty was an active and faithful public servant, serving since February of 2021.

Please join SPD to honor and celebrate the life of K-9 Tyrann October 8, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 118 North Ninth Street in Salina.

According to a statement released by SPD, there have been recent social media posts in reference to the tragic passing of SPD K-9 Officer Tyrann which according to SPD are absolutely untrue.

In order to be transparent, the Salina Police Department wished to make the public aware of the situation in a timely manner even prior to completing a thorough investigation, so a preliminary release was distributed.

Officers were on the top story of the Salina Regional Health Center parking garage, 400 block of South Santa Fe, for a recruiting advertisement when the K-9 Handler allowed Ty out of the vehicle to relieve himself.&nbsp;

This location was very familiar to Ty and his Handler which had been used on multiple occasions for training. Ty went around a parked vehicle and his handler went to check on him and discovered the tragedy.

According to SPD Cpt. James Feldman, a parade on Santa Fe alerted Ty. When he attempted to see where it was coming from and he jumped over the wall. Ty fell from the fourth story of the parking garage.&nbsp;

According to a realease from SPD, Tyrann was never placed on the ledge or asked to get on the ledge.&nbsp;

Ty was highly trained, but still a dog. Ty was a respected and beloved member of the Salina Police Department and no member of this department would ever place him in a needlessly dangerous position. His loss has greatly affected the Salina Police Department and the community he valiantly protected every day.

The Salina Police Department wishes to thank the community for their support and condolences while we grieve and navigate this devastating event.

WASHINGTON, D.C — U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), recently spoke on the Senate Floor regarding the launch of the Senate Sustainable Aviation Caucus to promote Sustainable Aviation Fuel.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"When it comes to energy production, I believe in an all of the above strategy," Moran said. "We need to be investing in all energy production, including wind, solar, fossil fuels, ethanol, and now SAF. To help spur investment in SAF production, I introduced the Farm to Fly Act, which would help accelerate the production and development of SAF through existing U.S. Department of Agriculture programs. Generating this new fuel source would not be possible without our producers."

"I'm launching the&nbsp;Senate Sustainable Aviation Caucus with Senator Bozeman and Senator Duckworth as co-chairs," Moran said. "The purpose of this caucus is simple: advance our nation's biofuel, energy and aviation industries, in an effort to increase domestic competitiveness, promote national security and bolster passenger safety. This caucus will work together to find ways to maximize the aviation industry's financial sustainability and increase its resiliency."

According to the <a href="https://www.energy.gov/eere/bioenergy/sustainable-aviation-fuels">Department of Energy</a>,&nbsp;SAF is a biofuel used to power aircraft that has similar properties to conventional jet fuel but with a smaller carbon footprint. Depending on the feedstock and technologies used to produce it, SAF can reduce life cycle GHG emissions dramatically compared to conventional jet fuel. Some emerging SAF pathways even have a net-negative GHG footprint.

910 KINA Saturday Morning Show Lineup

Salina Post proudly presents Flashback Friday in partnership with the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.smokyhillmuseum.org/">Smoky Hill Museum</a>. Enjoy a weekly tidbit of local history from the staff at Salina Post and the Smoky Hill Museum as we present "Salina-Flashback Fridays."&nbsp;

In the early days of Salina, transportation was a critical part of the town's development. Stagecoaches and railroads brought people to the growing city, while local travel was made possible by dray and hack services. By 1887, the streets were bustling enough that Aaron Adams added a second cab, and Hale’s cab was a fixture for night trains at the depot in the late 1800s.

In 1910, the Salina City Council passed an ordinance to license all public vehicles, including hacks, automobiles, and omnibuses. Fares were affordable, just 25 cents for a mile and a half, while annual licenses varied by vehicle type, with automobiles costing $50 per year.

Livery stables, such as Snyder’s Livery, were common in the 1880s and early 1900s, providing Salinans with single and double rigs for rent. For those wanting a unique experience, the “Belle of Salina” offered steamboat rides along the Smoky Hill River, a popular leisure activity in the late 19th century.

As Salina grew, residents demanded more convenient forms of transportation. Horse-drawn trolleys appeared in 1886, providing service from the depot to Kansas Wesleyan University. This service was quickly upgraded to electric streetcars in 1891. By the early 1920s, buses replaced trolleys, with “Mac’s Bus” offering rides for just ten cents for adults and five cents for children. The expansion of bus services continued, and by 1938, Salina’s buses ran throughout the city, connecting residents to every corner of town and even offering interstate routes.

Automobiles came to Salina in the early 1900s, with the first dealer, F.L. Martin, setting up shop in 1904. 

By 1907, several car dealers were established, and the Good Roads Club, led by W.W. Watson, advocated for improved roadways. Salina’s auto industry expanded rapidly, with over eighteen car dealers by the 1920s and 30s, including the well-known Simpson-Hoffman Motor Company. Gas stations, like the Old Dutch Mill at 901 N. Santa Fe, catered to the growing number of drivers with not only fuel but also a restaurant and tourist cabins.

As Salina developed, so too did its transportation landscape, evolving from horse-drawn carriages and riverboats to a thriving automobile and bus network.

📸 Flashback Friday: Salina Post -The Trolley- Vol. 58

On Thursday, an 83-year-old Salina woman became the latest victim of a gift card scam, losing $3,500 over ten days to a fraudulent caller.

 According to Salina Police Cpt. James Feldman, the scam began when the victim was contacted by a man claiming they were high school acquaintances. He promised her a $100,000 prize if she provided $3,000 in gift cards.

&nbsp;"The caller said he was from 2024FHCS Worldwide, Promo/Agent. The caller was able to obtain personal information from the victim," Feldman said. "The caller then told the victim to purchase the $1,000 Apple gift card and send them the card activation numbers to get her winnings. The victim ended up purchasing two $500 Amazon gift cards and provided the numbers."

Despite initial confusion with the type of gift cards, the scammer persisted, even fabricating a story that the IRS had placed a hold on her winnings, leading to further demands for Apple gift cards.

Captain Feldman warned that these types of scams, often targeting the elderly, are becoming more frequent. He urged residents to be cautious if asked to pay with gift cards, stressing that legitimate agencies and businesses do not conduct transactions this way. 

"If people have elderly neighbors or relatives, please discuss these types of situations with them," Feldman said. "If any store employees who sell gift cards to situations where they suspect someone purchasing gift cards is being taken advantage of please reach out to their local police department."

Salina woman loses thousands of dollars in gift card scam

Sacred Heart Jr./Sr. High School is excited to announce this year’s Homecoming court. According to a statement from the high school, the Sacred Heart Jr./Sr. High School Homecoming Court students embody the values, dedication, and excellence that define Sacred Heart Jr/Sr High School.

Daughter of Jon and Jennifer Freeman, Jayden has been involved in volleyball and softball for all four years, earning varsity letters in both. She has served as co-editor of the yearbook and co-captain of the Margaret Mary Community. Jayden is a National Honor Society member and plans to attend Fort Hays State University to study elementary education.

The daughter of Jose and Breiseda Mares, Amy has lettered in cheer all four years and participated in dance, basketball, and tennis. A National Honor Society member, she plans to attend Kansas State University, majoring in biology on a pre-med track.

Makenna, daughter of Alan Soukup and Lisa Tinoco, serves as senior class president and has competed in track, qualifying for state multiple times. She has also been involved in cross country, volleyball, basketball, and powerlifting. Makenna plans to pursue a bachelor's in kinesiology with the goal of earning a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.
