Walk-In enrollment event at Central High School, July 23

This weekend, the "Redneck Paradise Mud Run" will take place in Salina, Kansas. Set for July 20, the event will kick off at 1:00 p.m. with a variety of thrilling and exciting off-road competitions.

Participants can compete in multiple classes, including trucks, side-by-sides, and ATVs, with a special category for kids' power wheels (modifications accepted). The event will be held south of I-70 on Halstead Road to Stimmel Road and east for 2 and 3/4 miles on Fairchild Road, then further east to Armstrong Road.

Admission is priced at $10 per person, while children aged 8 and under can enter for free. Concessions will be available on-site, but attendees are welcome to bring their own coolers, provided they do not contain glass bottles. Beer may be brought to the event, but will not be sold at the event.&nbsp;

The locally-based band,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/p/Ghost-Town-Revival-100090550897417/">GTR: Ghost Town Revival</a>, will provide live music after the competitions.

CORRECTION: 'Redneck Paradise Mud Run' set for this Saturday in Salina

When Heart of America National Basketball Camp director Troy Thrasher met with his coaches before this year’s camps, he had just three words to share.

Thrasher, whose involvement with Heart of America stems back 44 years to his time as a camper, has seen firsthand the impact this event has had on young hoopers across the Midwest and has been proud to continue that tradition despite the challenges of recent years.

Heart of America is the third longest-running overnight basketball camp in the US and has been a staple of summers in Salina for over 50 years, drawing young athletes from all across the nation's heartland.

Several hardwood legends have come to Heart of America to hone their skills over the years, including University of Illinois head coach Brad Underwood, women’s basketball superstar Jackie Stiles, and a slew of future college athletes on both the men’s and women’s sides.&nbsp;

While much has changed over the last half-century, the values instilled into the campers have not, and that tradition remains a core part of what the Heart of America camps are all about today.

“The fundamentals are important to us, and this is a skills-based camp,” Thrasher said. “But this is also an intense camp and we want these kids to come out of this a little bit tougher and to be ultra-competitive in everything they do. We’re a blue-collar camp, and I think that’s why parents want to send their kids here.”

That blue-collar mentality was tested by the COVID-19 pandemic and recent renovations to Kansas Wesleyan’s campus, but the Salina community pulled together to ensure that one of the longest-running camps in the nation could not only survive but continue to thrive.

“When you have the tradition of keeping this camp going for so long, you really do risk losing that if you shut it down for a year,” Thrasher said. “Alyssa Wendel and her entire staff at K-State Salina came through in the clutch for us and allowed us to use their facilities. They were a fantastic host, and it was amazing to see Salina take care of a us again in that way.”

Even with a slight change to the venue, the Heart of America camp continues to regain steam as the pandemic fades into the past, with over 300 campers this summer. Total historical attendance is expected to reach 100,000 campers next summer.

Ultimately, despite the success stories of the Heart of America, both large and small, this camp has been built on tradition, trust, and deep ties to the Salina community.

“We’ve had some really great people and some big names come through this camp,” Thrasher said. “But now we’re to the point where we’ve got parents and grandparents who came to this camp as kids come to watch their kids and grandkids and that’s been a great thing to see.”

Heart of America basketball camp continues to thrive in Salina

Kelsey Andersen Onofre, assistant professor of plant pathology in K-State's College of Agriculture, will provide updates on the diseases that impacted the 2024 wheat crop. She will also discuss the need for disease management following spring and summer rains, especially the need to control volunteer wheat early and throughout the fall to prevent Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) infections in the following wheat crop.&nbsp;

Wheat Scoop: Sorghum U / Wheat U

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers and Ottawa County Sheriff's Deputies assisted in a chase in Salina and Ottawa County Wednesday evening.&nbsp;

The suspect vehicle reached speeds more than 125 mph on Ninth Street, heading north of Salina. 

According to SPD Lt. Kyle Tonniges, at about 10:14 p.m., Wednesday, July 17, an SPD officer attempted to pull over a red Lexus with an illegal tag in the 700 Block of North Seventh Street. The vehicle did not pull over, and a pursuit began.

"From that point, it [the suspect vehicle] went north out of town, north on Ninth Street and continued north into Ottawa County," said Tonniges.

SPD officers terminated the pursuit near the Old 81 Highway and Granite Road intersection. A short time later, Ottawa County Sheriff's Deputies located the suspect vehicle.

"Ottawa County Sheriff's Deputies located the vehicle about three miles north at 160th and Ivy Roads in Ottawa County, " Tonniges said. "The vehicle wasn't occupied."

SPD and the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office have been unable to locate the alleged suspect involved in this pursuit.

"We do have some suspects that we'll be following up with," Tonniges said.

July 20 community garage sale to benefit The Temple

On Tuesday through Thursday, July 23-25, APAC-Kansas, Shears Division of Salina will close to traffic Schilling Road east of Centennial Road.

During the closure, the contractor will perform numerous full depth pavement repairs. All homes and businesses will be accessible at all times but perhaps only by an alternate route.

Motorists are encouraged to plan accordingly and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

This work is part of a $1.17 million project that is a major component of the City of Salina's $5.9 million 2024 maintenance capital improvement program.

Do people vote against their self-interest? For example, there are LGBTQ Americans that vote Republican, despite the party’s track record of unfavorable policies toward the LGBTQ community.

Similarly, affluent Americans back President Biden, even though his tax policies target high-income households.

And despite Donald Trump’s persistent attacks on migrants, and support for harsh immigration policies, many Latinos support him.

Writing after the reelection of George W. Bush in 2004, Kansas native Thomas Frank claimed in his bestseller, What’s the Matter with Kansas, that the white working class were deceived into voting against their economic interests. Republicans convinced them that a liberal, coastal, urban elite threatened traditional American values and it was the responsibility of heartland farmers, factory workers, and waitresses to protect those values.

But according to Frank, traditional values were a ploy. Republicans after all represented big business and the wealthy. What the working class received for their support was lower wages, tax cuts for the rich, business deregulations, and sustained attacks on labor unions.

“Strip today's Kansans of their job security, and they head out to become registered Republicans. Push them off their land, and next thing you know they're protesting in front of abortion clinics. Squander their life savings on manicures for the CEO, and there's a good chance they'll join the John Birch Society.” What’s the Matter with Kansas? (2004, 67-68).

As it turned out, Frank was wrong. Systematic research showed the working class was not tricked. Economic issues, compared to traditional values, were the main drivers of their vote.

Moreover, the working class are not the only group to switch party allegiances – affluent voters have as well. In 1996, the highest income voters went for Republican Bob Dole by 16 points. But that margin completely disappeared by 2020. Joe Biden split the wealthy vote evenly with Trump.

This change impacted Kansas. In 1996, Johnson County went for Dole by 22 points. By 2020, Biden won by 8 points, flipping Kansas’s wealthiest county for the first time in decades.

Does this mean Democrats hoodwinked affluent Johnson County voters into acting against their material interests? Of course not.

Wealthy Americans that support Democrats may do so because they believe in the values championed by the party – protecting the environment, universal health care, and a larger role for government in fighting racial and economic inequalities.

Similarly, LGBTQ and Latino Americans who cast their votes for Republicans may do so because they identify with the values the party upholds - limited government, strong national defense, free markets, and lower taxes.

All of this serves as a reminder that self-interest manifests in countless ways and its interpretation is entirely subjective.

Voters prioritize certain interests over others. It’s ultimately a personal matter.

The strength of democracy lies in the freedom of voters to choose candidates that align with their self-interests. But when doubts are raised about what in fact those interests are, and the political choices that arise from them, democracy suffers.

The Central Kansas District 4-H is set to launch "Show Me The Money," a workshop series aimed at teaching financial literacy to youth. The workshops will feature hands-on activities and engaging learning opportunities, designed to make financial education both fun and accessible.

The three-part series will be held at two locations:

Salina (Central Kansas District Extension - Salina Office Meeting Room) on July 19, 26, and August 2 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Minneapolis (Ottawa County Courthouse Meeting Room) on July 29, 30, and 31 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.

Participation is open to all youth, and there is no requirement to be enrolled in 4-H. However, families are asked to register in advance to ensure adequate supplies are available for all participants.

Central Kansas District 4-H hosts youth financial literacy workshop

The Salina Animal Shelter is currently experiencing a round of kennel cough in our facility.&nbsp; According to a post made on social media by the shelter, a stray dog was brought into the facility before the holiday weekend. This dog may have been the cause of the outbreak.&nbsp; The Shelter is pausing adoptions, surrenders and stray intakes for all dogs to help prevent a spread of this air borne illness. All dogs are given a Bordetella vaccine upon intake to the facility but like all vaccines they are not 100% effective.

 Shelter protocol for dogs with kennel cough, also known as Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC), should include isolation, cleaning, and treatment. These are the steps shelter staff are taking at the Salina animal Shelter:

Isolate positive cases in a separate room, or at a vet hospital if no isolation room is available. Quarantine exposed dogs for 14 days after treatment begins, or until they are no longer contagious.

Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, gowns, and shoe covers when coming into contact with a suspected animal or entering isolation. Disinfect contaminated items like bowls, toys, and bedding using a dishwasher, washing machine, or hot water.

Treatment is usually symptomatic and supportive, and may include antibiotics, maintaining hydration and nutrition, and minimizing excitement. More severely affected dogs may need more aggressive treatment, such as hospitalization or oxygen support.

The shelter dogs will have a follow up visit with the shelter veterinarian on 7-25-2024. The shelter will have more information following this secondary examination.

Kennel Cough outbreak halts dog adoptions/intakes at Salina Animal Shelter

The big truck pulls onto the scale as it prepares to make a delivery in Texas. It is essential that the weight be accurate when delivering these products. That scale was installed and calibrated by a company in rural Kansas.

Today we’ll meet a man whose company specializes in installing, calibrating, and servicing industrial scales used by all types of businesses to get the weight just right. You’ll want to learn this full story – it’s worth the weight.

Ron Travis is the owner and founder of Travis Scale Company. He grew up in Arlington, Kansas and joined the Marines. After his military service, he became a mechanic for various businesses.

One of his jobs included servicing scale trucks. He enrolled in a community college training program and was recruited to western Kansas to work in the scale industry.

In July 1997, Travis went into business on his own. Today, Ron and his wife Cyndi lead Travis Scale Company, which is certified to work in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska and New Mexico. The company operates several service trucks and a full time construction crew. Technicians and a specialized engineer work to calibrate the equipment.

Cyndi’s son, Tyson McGuire, and his wife Danielle joined the business as well. They now work from Danielle’s hometown, which is the rural community of Delphos, population 302 people. Now, that’s rural.

“We sell, install and service industrial scales,” Travis said. The company specializes in precision balances, industrial scales and calibration weights.

“We use the latest technology backed by the best quality manufacturers in the world,” he said. Travis Scale serves the food processing, chemical, metals, automotive, trucking and transportation, plastics and manufacturing industries.

I never knew there were so many types of scales. Travis Scale can work on everything from airline baggage to wheel load scales. There are axle scales, bench scales, counting scales, crane scales, floor scales, lift truck scales, pallet jack scales, portion control scales, retail scales, stainless steel scales, washdown scales, and more.

The company also offers checkweighers, dimensioning systems, force measurements test stands, in-motion weighing devices, moisture analyzers and other types of equipment.

In addition to routine calibration and repair and maintenance work, the company offers short-term or even one-time scale rentals.

In southwest Kansas, customers often include grain elevators, feed yards, and railroad stations. For the livestock industry, Travis Scale began building its own prefabricated scale decks and cattle racks in 2002. Instead of using the recommended 3,500-force concrete, they pour 10,000-force concrete.

“This works to ensure longevity and durability, even in the most stressful conditions,” Travis said.

"We are excited to commemorate a century of broadcasting excellence at K-State, celebrating the rich legacy of Kansas radio,” said Allison Mazzei, Kansas Association of Broadcasters president. “As one of the few surviving examples of their kind in the United States, these iconic towers symbolize the university's dedication to connecting and educating communities. This milestone event honors the profound historical significance of our broadcasting history and its enduring impact on Kansas and beyond."

The public celebration will highlight K-State’s rich broadcasting legacy with performances by the Pride of Wildcat Land marching band and theatre program students.

 Attendees will also hear from distinguished speakers, including former U.S. Sen. and KSAC broadcaster Sam Brownback, journalist and former National Public Radio Vice President for News and Information William Buzenberg, National Association of Broadcasting President Curtis LeGeyt and K-State Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff Marshall Stewart.

Saline County Jail Bookings, July 17

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Culver public water supply system located in Ottawa County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.

If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears. Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

The advisory took effect on July 16 and will remain in effect until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved. KDHE officials issued the advisory because the city cannot currently maintain the minimum required chlorine residual. Failure to maintain required chlorine residual levels may put the system at risk for bacterial contamination.&nbsp;

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

Employees of Memorial Health System (MHS) in Abilene wore blue jeans at work for another “Jeans Day” fundraiser on Fridays throughout the month of June. 

Employees make a donation, of at least $5, and are allowed to wear blue jeans at work. A total donation of $750 was donated to the Herington Fire Department for CPR training.&nbsp;The Herington Fire Department has agreed to provide a CPR class for free if the cost of the CPR cards, for anyone who wants to take the class, is covered by $17 per card. 

The money raised will go towards helping this effort. If you, or someone you know, is interested in taking a CPR class call Andrew at 785-258-0336.&nbsp;The monthly Jeans Day fundraiser is organized by the MHS Employer of Choice (EOC) committee.&nbsp;
