Over the weekend, multiple unrelated grass fires ignited across Saline County.

On Saturday, July 13, a grass fire sparked at the weapons range located at 429 West Barley Road. Ordinance caused the fire to quickly spread, with smoke visible from&nbsp; Farrelly and Powers Roads. 

Fire District Three responded to the scene. The extent of the burned area is unknown, but no significant loss was reported. 

Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire successfully with assistance from the range's fire trucks.

Later that day, at approximately 4:40 p.m.  three small grass fires were reported along the 11500 Block of South Burma Road. These fires erupted in the ditch and caused minor visibility issues due to the smoke, but they did not cause damage. 

The cause of these fires remains undetermined, with no vehicles present and no suspicious circumstances reported. It is speculated that a spark from a trailer could have ignited the dry grass.

On Sunday, July 14, another grass fire broke out at 2:00 p.m. along West Armstrong Road at 7796 West Armstrong Road. The fire affected the north ditch, scorching mostly mowed grass and weeds and an Evergy electrical pole.

Despite the fire scorching the electrical pole, it remained fully intact and functional, with no structural damage reported.

Sheriff Soldan noted that even with dry conditions contributing to the fires, the prompt response from local fire departments ensured minimal damage and no injuries. 

The community is advised to exercise caution, especially in dry areas, to prevent future grass fires.

SFD responds to grass fire at Centennial Road/Cloud Street in Salina

The American Legion Department of Kansas Boys State Committee has appointed Kyle Wheatley to serve as the executive director of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas.

Wheatley’s term began on July 1. He takes over for Tom Wierman who served in the role for the past four years.

Wheatley, a resident of Colorado Springs, Colo., was a Kansas Boys State delegate in 2003 from Wichita Northwest High School before graduating the following year. He has served KBS in a number of volunteer positions since 2004, including various counselor roles before ascending to serve in advisor roles in 2013. Most recently, Wheatley served as an associate director and bank advisor.

As executive director for the American Legion Boys State of Kansas, and in conjunction with the Kansas Boys State Committee, Wheatley is responsible for the direction and oversight of all objectives for the program. Along with implementation of strategic planning and visioning, Wheatley is accountable for the long-term health and longevity of the ALBSK and its resources. 

In the coming weeks, Wheatley will announce the Kansas Boys State 2024-25 leadership team. A grandson of U.S. Army and U.S. Navy veterans, Wheatley graduated from Friends University in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in music education. He then chose to study with his inspiration to be a teacher, his high school choir director, at the University of Alabama, graduating with a Masters of Arts degree in education, curriculum and instruction in 2012.

Wheatley taught middle school and high school choir for 11 years in Fayetteville, Ga., Fort Worth, Texas, and Granbury, Texas, before stepping away from teaching in 2023 to be with his now fiancée, Christin, on the road while she was a travel nurse. He repurposed his life into a career working as a consultant for Guidehouse, a growing consultancy based in Arlington, Va., working with federal clients on projects with emphasis in data analytics and data science. The couple is planning to be married in October near Colorado Springs.

The objective of the American Legion Boys State of Kansas is to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to community, state and nation. Kansas Boys State provides a relevant, interactive, problemsolving experience in leadership and teamwork that develops self-identity, promotes mutual respect and instills civic responsibility.

 Boys State is a “learning by doing” political exercise that simulates elections, political parties and government at the state, county and local levels, providing opportunities to lead under pressure, showcasing character and working effectively within a team. It’s also an opportunity to gain pride and respect for government and the price paid by members of the military to preserve democracy.

The Kansas Boys State program, which includes students who have just completed their junior year of high school (will be seniors in the fall) and sophomore year of high school (will be juniors in the fall), is scheduled to hold its 2025 session Sunday, June 1, through Saturday, June 7, at Kansas State University in Manhattan. It will be the program’s 33rd consecutive session at KSU and 87th overall.

Salina Area United Way is pleased to announce the promotion of Christina Small to the position of Executive Director. 

Christina has been with the Salina Area United Way for one and a half years, starting as the Early Childcare Initiative Director and quickly advancing through the ranks due to her leadership skills, dedication, and passion for serving the community. Christina has been instrumental in advancing the Early Childcare Initiative.

In her role as the Early Childcare Initiative Director, Christina helped secure over $2 million in grant funding and built the Early Childcare Initiative Fund to address the childcare crisis. 

Additionally, Christina secured grant funding to launch the United Network, a service that allows individuals to connect to the internet at the United Way office to search and apply for jobs, access community services, further their education, and print necessary documents. 

“The Board of Directors appointed the right person, Christina Small, to be the new Executive Director,” said former Executive Director Claire Ludes. “She has the vision and passion to continue leading the United Way. I feel confident that the Salina Area United Way will continue to be a leading organization for our nonprofit and the community under Christina’s leadership.” 

Christina holds a Psychology degree from Bethany College. Before joining the Salina Area United Way, Christina worked for the State of Kansas for 11 years. 

“I am excited to take on this new role and continue to build and foster relationships within the community,” said Christina. “We have made significant progress in better serving our community and supporting our nonprofit partners. I am looking forward to continuing that progress.”

Salina Area United Way announces promotion of Christina Small to executive director

Salina Animal Services announced last week that it has reached full capacity.

The facility, 329 North Second Street, serves as the primary animal shelter for the area, is currently unable to accept new animals until further notice.

The summer months typically see an increase in the number of stray and surrendered pets, and this year is no exception. 

"It ebbs and flows. It's not uncommon for us to be at capacity, but it just depends on the timing and when animals come in," said Deputy City Manager Jacob Wood.

Wood said the shelter currently has 64 dogs in its care, with 28 classified as "pit bull type" dogs.

Salina Animal Shelter at full capacity

A vehicle-related wreck on Saturday evening resulted in injuries for a Missouri woman after she made an evasive maneuver that led to a collision with a bridge rail.

A 60-year-old female of Florissant, Missouri, was driving eastbound on I-70 at approximately 5:33 p.m. going about 75 mph, when she reported that another vehicle swerved into her lane, prompting her to take evasive action. 

She swerved left, striking the bridge rail on a bridge near the Solomon rest area.

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, she complained of leg pain and was transported to Salina Regional Hospital by EMS. Her vehicle sustained substantial damage to the driver's side.

The Nissan had two passengers: a 58-year-old male in the front seat and a 27-year-old female&nbsp; in the back seat. 

The other vehicle involved in the incident was not identified and did not make contact with the Nissan.

"She just took an avoidance maneuver and hit the bridge," said Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan. "The other vehicle kept going and may not have known even if it happened."

Milt Allen climbed to Mt. Everest base camp, summited Kilimanjaro, was charged by black rhinos in Zambia and a mother moose in Alaska, slapped by an eagle in the Aleutian Islands, and tracked mountain gorillas in Rwanda.

Those are just a few of the hefty challenges conquered by the 63-year-old doctorate level maestro from Salina. His&nbsp;musical resume is flavored by the rhythm of an active — and daring — life.

“Most people run away from fire. I tend to run toward it,” Allen said. “That’s pretty literally how I think about life.”

The former professor who directed and taught from elementary to professional levels in 49 states including Native American reservations and five continents, is seldom satisfied to just chill at&nbsp;Harmony Hideaway.

Which is why Allen’s planning to dip his bicycle tires in the Pacific Ocean Aug. 18 from the Santa Monica Pier — the western end of Route 66 in California — for a three-month, 3,100-mile pedal across the United States, to the Annapolis Pier in Maryland.

On top of the potentially dangerous journey, he’s dubbing it “Biking for Band,” to raise money for a pair of special causes.

His goal is to be home before the Nov. 5 U.S. elections.

It’s another test for the former bike racer and triathlete, and a way to raise money and awareness for music education and teacher wellness, through his nonprofit, TheMusicGuerrilla.com.

Biking for Band aims to bolster music programs in schools and call attention to the need of additional mental health resources for all teachers.

“Music education is constantly under the knife in public and private schools, and we’re seeing skyrocketing mental health numbers with teacher and students,” said Allen. “When we’re talking about social and emotional learning, music has always been an outlet. A lot of schools are cutting off their noses despite their faces. Schools, teachers and students are really paying the price.”

A huge emphasis is on STEM. which stands for science, technology, English and mathematics, he said, and educational funding is hinged almost solely to those endeavors.

“Schools have squeezed out opportunities for students, emotionally, creatively and intellectually,” Allen said. “Music is about emotional release, as well as good stimulation.”

His goal is to raise $20,000 to help with expenses on the bike trip, and to help those causes through the former professor’s nonprofit, TheMusicGuerrilla.com. Proceeds over the goal will benefit the nonprofit.

“The Music Guerrilla uses music as an accessible portal for personal, educational and emotional growth for schools and community programs, with special attention to underserved and low-income areas. Whether a listener, a performer, educator, or supporter, The Music Guerrilla serves to empower and inspire a new generation to think, act and create.”

Allen added teacher wellness out of his concern for all who educate.

“It’s a major problem and not really being talked about very much,” he said. “This nonprofit is moving forward.”

Biking for Band is a daring deed for Allen who retired from academia in 2012, but continued his career as a freelancer. He and partner Nancy Steele founded Harmony Hideaway in 2022 from a country home nestled into a wooded 240-acre estate just a bit northeast of Salina. The business provides unique lodging, events and meeting spaces, and hosts house concerts for national touring musicians.

Allen has been in training for several months, putting in long rides to ready himself for the rigors of travel. He’s being supported with gear and expertise from Shawn Jones, owner of Bike Tech at 660 S. Ohio in Salina and at 1620 Fort Riley Blvd. in Manhattan.

“It’s pretty good when anybody tries to support a cause,” Jones said. “I’m trying to get his bike fit for him, to make it more comfortable to ride, and we’re getting accessories he needs for the trip.”

Out-of-town riders are known to stop by the shop every summer as they tour the country by bicycle, he said, but this one if different.

“(Milt’s) a friend,” Jones said. “It’s kind of personal. It’s no small feat. I think it’s pretty cool. We’ll be tracking his progress, and we’ll get to hear some of his stories.”

Biking for Band won’t be easy, Allen admits.

He must first dodge wildfires in California, and on the third day, enter the Mojave Desert, infamous for its harsh conditions, an includes section dubbed Death Valley. Beyond those areas are Arizona and New Mexico, where triple-digit high temperatures are common.

“It’s one of the hottest summers on record, specifically in the Southwest,” Allen said. “There will be 100,000 feet of climbing from deserts to mountains, from storm season in the Southwest to Fall and dropping temperatures in the East, from cities to expanses with no services.”

He will be traveling as lightly at possible — covering 50 to 70 miles a day — camping some nights, accepting lodging and food when offered, and meeting with folks about Biking for Band causes whenever opportunities arise.

And, the tall skinny adventurer is determined to enjoy every mile of it.

“I’m an inquisitive Kansan,” Allen said. “There’s a lot to marvel out in this ol’ world.”

Schools, teachers and students are really paying the price.”A huge emphasis is on STEM. which stands for science, technology, English and mathematics, he said, and educational funding is hinged almost solely to those endeavors.“Schools have squeezed out opportunities for students, emotionally, creatively and intellectually,” Allen said. “Music is about emotional release, as well as good stimulation.”His goal is to raise $20,000 to help with expenses on the bike trip, and to help those causes through the former professor’s nonprofit, TheMusicGuerrilla.com. Proceeds over the goal will benefit the nonprofit.Here’s the mission statement:“The Music Guerrilla uses music as an accessible portal for personal, educational and emotional growth for schools and community programs, with special attention to underserved and low-income areas. Whether a listener, a performer, educator, or supporter, The Music Guerrilla serves to empower and inspire a new generation to think, act and create.”Allen added teacher wellness out of his concern for all who educate.“It’s a major problem and not really being talked about very much,” he said. “This nonprofit is moving forward.”Biking for Band is a daring deed for Allen who retired from academia in 2012, but continued his career as a freelancer. He and partner Nancy Steele founded Harmony Hideaway in 2022 from a country home nestled into a wooded 240-acre estate just a bit northeast of Salina. The business provides unique lodging, events and meeting spaces, and hosts house concerts for national touring musicians.Allen has been in training for several months, putting in long rides to ready himself for the rigors of travel. He’s being supported with gear and expertise from Shawn Jones, owner of Bike Tech at 660 S. Ohio in Salina and at 1620 Fort Riley Blvd. in Manhattan.“It’s pretty good when anybody tries to support a cause,” Jones said. “I’m trying to get his bike fit for him, to make it more comfortable to ride, and we’re getting accessories he needs for the trip.”Out-of-town riders are known to stop by the shop every summer as they tour the country by bicycle, he said, but this one if different.“(Milt’s) a friend,” Jones said. “It’s kind of personal. It’s no small feat. I think it’s pretty cool. We’ll be tracking his progress, and we’ll get to hear some of his stories.”Biking for Band won’t be easy, Allen admits.He must first dodge wildfires in California, and on the third day, enter the Mojave Desert, infamous for its harsh conditions, an includes section dubbed Death Valley. NWS four day weather forecast, heat advisory today

<a></a><a>A new addition has been built at the Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo arena in Abilene, Kansas.</a>

Elevated seating, called the Lumber House Loft, has been constructed above the roping chutes at the north end of the arena.

Standing twelve feet high, the structure measures 20 feet wide by 75 feet long.

They have been made into five “boxes,” or suites, each 15x16 feet, in which fifteen people can sit to watch the rodeo.

They will be sold for seating, said DeLynn Farson, committee treasurer.

Matt Engle of Lumber House, Inc., has provided the labor, equipment and materials for building the boxes.

They are fully covered, he said, and are made of steel with metal end walls and roof.

Partition walls made of six-foot cedar pickets allow the air to flow between the boxes but give some privacy.

The face of the boxes has a three-foot cedar picket fence overlooking the arena.

They’re the best place to sit in the grandstand, Engle thinks.

“It’s the best view in the entire house,” he said. “It’s the only spot in the entire stadium that will be one hundred percent shaded all day long, with good air flow.”

He also noted that fans in the boxes can look down and see what’s happening with the ropers, steer wrestlers and barrel racers.

“You’re right over the top,” Engle said. “You get to see the barrel racers fly underneath you, and you get to see people’s faces as they come back. I think it’s going to be a neat experience, and a comfortable one, too.”

Engle, owner of the Lumber House True Value, has been a loyal rodeo sponsor since the early 2000s.

He was a PRCA bareback rider and bull rider for several years in the late 1990s and loved the sport.

Now he gives back to the sport he enjoyed so much.

“I love rodeo, and I love everything about it,” he said. “I wanted to be able to invest in something in my community that would have a lasting impression.

“We all give in different ways, and this was something I wanted to give to.”

Nick Weibert was a big part of the labor, Engle said, amongst other people.

The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo kicks off&nbsp;July 30&nbsp;and runs&nbsp;through August 2, with nightly shows&nbsp;at 7:30 pm.

The rodeo is held in conjunction with the Central Kansas Free Fair.

Wednesday, July 17 event highlights include the 4-H/FFA Swine Show, Beef Show, and the Baby Show.

"Whether it's mowing, painting, filling out paperwork tonight everybody will come in and clean up the barns and facilities that got dust on them, and then Monday night, we put our tent up and for shade and pull picnic tables under and be ready to sweat on Monday."&nbsp;

Additional events include Polly's Baking Contest, the Pig Scramble, and carnival rides. The Ottawa County Fair will also include food vendors from the VFW Post and Auxilary, Minneapolis Noon Lions, the Minneapolis Evening Lions, United Methodist Church and Little B's SnoCones.

"We are very fortunate to have carnival rides, not just blow-ups and games," Kindall said. "And the best thing about that is a ticket for games is 50 cents and it takes two tickets to ride one of the carnival rides."

According to the Ottawa County Fair Board, the fair is an excellent place for families to celebrate the county's agricultural heritage, community spirit, and family fun.

Choose different varieties to prevent common problem, says K-State expert

K-State horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says the common problem of tomatoes cracking can be solved by scheduling watering or choosing different varieties.

Home gardeners face the problem of tomato cracking, or hard cracks on the upper part of the fruit, usually spanning from or around the stem.

While the cracks do not necessarily ruin the tomato, they are unsightly, said Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.

“Tomatoes have a root system that is very dense and fibrous, and is quite efficient in picking up water,” she said. “Unfortunately, the root system can become unbalanced with the top of the plant.”

Domenghini said cracking early in the season is likely related to the top growth of the tomato, which can then result in blossom-end rot when the weather turns hot and dry. Later in the season, cracking may be caused by a sudden abundance of water after a long dry spell.

How can cracking be prevented? Domenghini suggests consistent watering and mulching. Scheduled watering will prevent a quick influx of water likely to cause cracking. Additionally, mulching will help moderate moisture levels in the soil.

Some gardeners may be already following these recommendations and doing everything right, and still end up with tomato cracking. Faculty in K-State’s Department of Horticulture evaluated different tomato varieties over several years to try and come up with the most crack-resistant tomato.

“The difference seems to be the pliability of the skin rather than thickness; the more pliable the skin, the more resistance to cracking,” Domenghini said. “The old variety Jet Star has been the most crack-resistant of any we have tested, including the newer types.”

Unfortunately, Domenghini noted, Jet Star is a variety that can put out rampant, uncontrolled growth. Of the newer, more attractive varieties, Domenghini said the Mountain Spring, Mountain Pride, Mountain Fresh, Floralina, and Sun Leaper varieties had good resistance to cracking.

 </figure><h2>Choose different varieties to prevent common problem, says K-State expert</h2>K-State horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says the common problem of tomatoes cracking can be solved by scheduling watering or choosing different varieties.K-State Research and Extension news serviceHome gardeners face the problem of tomato cracking, or hard cracks on the upper part of the fruit, usually spanning from or around the stem.While the cracks do not necessarily ruin the tomato, they are unsightly, said Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini.“Tomatoes have a root system that is very dense and fibrous, and is quite efficient in picking up water,” she said. “Unfortunately, the root system can become unbalanced with the top of the plant.”Domenghini said cracking early in the season is likely related to the top growth of the tomato, which can then result in blossom-end rot when the weather turns hot and dry. Later in the season, cracking may be caused by a sudden abundance of water after a long dry spell.How can cracking be prevented? Domenghini suggests consistent watering and mulching. Scheduled watering will prevent a quick influx of water likely to cause cracking. Additionally, mulching will help moderate moisture levels in the soil.Some gardeners may be already following these recommendations and doing everything right, and still end up with tomato cracking. Faculty in K-State’s Department of Horticulture evaluated different tomato varieties over several years to try and come up with the most crack-resistant tomato.“The difference seems to be the pliability of the skin rather than thickness; the more pliable the skin, the more resistance to cracking,” Domenghini said. “The old variety Jet Star has been the most crack-resistant of any we have tested, including the newer types.”Unfortunately, Domenghini noted, Jet Star is a variety that can put out rampant, uncontrolled growth. Of the newer, more attractive varieties, Domenghini said the Mountain Spring, Mountain Pride, Mountain Fresh, Floralina, and Sun Leaper varieties had good resistance to cracking.Domenghini and her colleagues in K-State's Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources produce a weekly&nbsp;<a href="https://hnr.k-state.edu/extension/info-center/newsletters/index.html">Horticulture Newsletter</a>&nbsp;with tips for maintaining home landscapes and gardens. WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Social Security Administration announced that customers who created an online account (e.g.,&nbsp;my&nbsp;Social Security account) before September 18, 2021, will soon be required to transition to a <a href="http://Login.gov">Login.gov</a> account to continue access to their online services. Over five million of these account holders have already transitioned to <a href="http://Login.gov">Login.gov</a>.

The agency is making the changes to simplify the sign-in experience and align with federal authentication standards while providing safe and secure access to online services.&nbsp;

“my&nbsp;Social Security is a safe and secure way for people to do business with us,” said Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley. “We’re excited to transition to <a href="http://Login.gov">Login.gov</a> to access our online services, streamlining the process and ease of use for the public across agencies.”

Account holders are encouraged to sign-in now. When the user logs in, they will be presented with an option to easily transition to Login.gov. Once their account is successfully linked, a confirmation screen will appear, and they will have immediate access to their personal&nbsp;my&nbsp;Social Security services or other service that they were attempting to access.&nbsp;

Existing <a href="http://Login.gov">Login.gov</a> or ID.me account holders do NOT need to create a new account or take any action.&nbsp;

My&nbsp;Social Security accounts are free, secure, and provide personalized tools for everyone, whether receiving benefits or not.
