SALINA, Kansas (AP) — A JetBlue flight from New York to San Diego landed safely in Kansas after the crew received an alert about smoke in the cargo area, authorities said. The airline said it turned out to be a false alarm.

Flight 1189, with about 130 people on board, departed Kennedy International Airport at about 4 p.m. Saturday and was headed to San Diego International Airport.

The Airbus A320 landed at Salina Regional Airport in Kansas around 6:30 p.m. local time. The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate.

No injuries were reported, and the local fire department helped people off the plane.

“The pilot came on and let us know that he was seeing an alert for smoke in the cargo bay,” said passenger Seth Odell,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/jetblue-flight-makes-emergency-landing-smoke-detected-cockpit-rcna172141">NBC News reported</a>. “Some passengers did report hearing a loud bang, too, and so we descended incredibly rapidly and landed in the extremely small airport in Salina.”

Odell said people were starting to “freak out.”

“Some people were crying. It was a little bit intense for a few minutes,” he said.

JetBlue said in a statement that the plane landed without incident.

"Upon inspection, we determined the smoke indication presented to our pilots was a false indication,” the statement said.

Jetblue flight makes emergency landing in Salina after false alarm

Saline County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a road rage incident on Saturday afternoon after a suspect reportedly brandished a gun and allegedly shot at a Concordia couple.&nbsp;

According to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan, at approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21 a couple from Concordia merged onto I-135 northbound at the Schilling Road exit when a black pickup truck, driven by 34-year-old Nicholas Osbourn of Solomon, began tailgating them. 

"Osbourn went to pass the couple in the vehicle. They didn't realize he was. They both came up to ramp together," Soldan said. "Osbourn attempted to pass, immediately after leaving the ramp but there was another vehicle in the lane. So they [Concordia couple] switched lanes, and Osbourne thought they cut him off.

 Osbourn began following the couple closely. He then passed their vehicle, brandished a .22 caliber revolver, and discharged the firearm multiple times out of the back window of his truck, according to a statement from the couple. 

According to Soldan no bullets made contact with the victims' vehicle.&nbsp;

The couple, fearing for their safety, pulled over at Milepost 95. Osbourn also stopped, got out of his truck, and began walking toward the couple. In response, the couple put their vehicle in reverse, against the flow of I-135 traffic, to avoid confrontation.

At this point, another couple driving along the interstate noticed and stopped to assist. 

"Osbourn told the second couple that he had 'shot at some people' but wasn’t sure if he had hit them," Soldan said.&nbsp;

Sheriff's Deputies including officers from the Salina Police Department, quickly arrived on the scene. Osbourn, who had returned to his truck, was arrested without further incident. He faces charges of two counts of aggravated assault, criminal discharge of a firearm on a public roadway, reckless driving, and unlawfully being a pedestrian on the interstate.

Solomon man arrested after allegedly firing gun in road rage incident on I-135

A Salina woman lost $16,000 in a gift card scam after scammers falsely claimed her financial accounts were linked to money laundering, according to Salina Police Department (SPD) Captain James Feldman.

The 76 year old woman contacted the SPD on September 20, explaining that she had initially received an email from someone posing as a representative of the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) Department of Investigations. The scammer told her that her checking account and credit cards were tied to money laundering, and to resolve the issue, she needed to buy gift cards.

"A store clerk team told her it was a scam, but she believed that it had occurred, and so she went through with it," Feldman said.&nbsp;

The woman continued with the purchase of gift cards totaling $9,000 and $7,000 charged to a credit card. The scammer then had her provide the card numbers, allowing them to steal the funds.

Captain Feldman emphasized the importance of being mindful of ongoing scams.

 “No government agency, including the FTC, will ever ask for gift cards as a form of payment,” Feldman said. 

As the holiday season approaches, SPD urges residents to stay alert and report any suspicious activity immediately. Be cautious of unsolicited requests for money or gift cards, as they are common tactics used by scammers.

NWS three day weather forecast, CoCoRahs 24-hour rain totals

Corn harvest is ramping up across Kansas and while every field will be different, reports from across the state range from better than expected to a great crop. Prices, however, are just ugly. As the calendar marches toward October, soybean harvest and wheat planting will make already crowded schedules even busier.

In Finney County, Kyle Deaver had started shelling dryland corn. Irrigated fields are still ripening but soybeans are getting close to being harvest ready. Rain showers were a welcome benefit last week that will help with wheat planting.

Deaver believes the corn crop in his area will have a solid, average year, but it’s “a lower price than I’d like to see,” he says. Corn prices have been trending down since topping $8 a bushel in 2022, and they’ve fallen about 60 cents a bushel since the beginning of the year. It’s now hovering just above $4 as harvest rolls though Kansas.

On the eastern side of the state, Ottawa Coop’s Waverly location manager Mike Beying said a rain would still help soybeans in the field and he’d welcome a slowdown in corn harvest to free up some more storage.

“Space is tight,” he says. “When the corn is coming, it’s coming fast.”

Beying says his location has received corn from four counties so far, and some of those loads were around 250 bushels per acre, significantly above the usual target of 130 to 140 bushels per acre for the area.

“We’ll be above that average in a lot of places,” Beying says. “It just depends on where the rain happened to fall.”

The rain didn’t fall on the fields of Marion County farmer Nick Peters. He reported there was no measurable rain in his area from July 3 to Aug. 13. For the second straight year, a lack of moisture meant the corn died early and Peters finished up harvest earlier than usual.

“If there had been any type of moisture then it could have really made a difference,” he says. “It was better than last year. It wasn’t our best crop, but it was better than we thought it was going to be. Considering all the factors, we’re happy.”

Peters says he’s staying busy with spraying and waiting for soybeans to dry down for harvest. He’s hopeful for some moisture to help with wheat drilling and to give a boost to his double crop beans.

“Prices are a little rough right now,” Peters says. “Overall, we definitely could be worse off. We’ll survive and advance.”

The eternal optimism of farmers never ceases to amaze me. A better than expected harvest after six weeks of no rain isn’t easy to deal with. And the excitement from a bumper crop is still dampened by low prices. It’s a testament to the faith growers have in the weather, markets and their own ability to look beyond today’s results and believe tomorrow’s will be better. Whether corn harvest is just starting or already wrapped up, one thing’s for certain. There’s always next year.

Mahomes shook off another interception to throw a pair of touchdown passes, and the Chiefs defense stopped Atlanta twice on fourth down in the closing minutes, preserving the victory.

The Chiefs are now 3-0 while Atlanta falls to 1-2, KC will be back in action to take on the Chargers next Sunday

On Sunday Blake Snell struck out nine in six strong innings and the San Francisco Giants completed a three-game series sweep with a 2-0 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Kansas City was shut out for the second straight game and lost its seventh straight. The Royals drop into a tie with Detroit (82-74) in the race for an AL wild card. Minnesota is a half-game back of Kansas City and the Tigers, pending the outcome of its second game of a doubleheader against Boston.

All this comes with just six games remaining in the regular season

The Salina community is gearing up for the inaugural Guns and Hoses Pickleball Tournament set to take place on September 28, 2024, at Oakdale Park.&nbsp;

Participants must register by 11:59 p.m. today September 23, and entry fees will be collected on the tournament day. Guns and Hoses is a 501(c)(3) organization comprised of firefighters, law enforcement officers, and deputies. This year marks the first year the organization will host a pickleball tournament. 

The event is organized to support young Tate Flax and his ongoing battle with Dravet Syndrome. Tate, who will be two years old in October, was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome after genetic testing revealed a mutation in his SCN1A gene. This severe form of epilepsy has caused him to experience frequent, hard-to-treat seizures, leading his family on regular trips to Kansas City for medical treatment, including a recent surgery trip in June for a Vagus Nerve Stimulation implant.

The tournament features a lineup of men’s doubles, women’s doubles, mixed doubles, and a beginner category, ensuring opportunities for players of all skill levels. Registration fees are set at $20 for participants 16 and older, and $10 for those under 16, with all proceeds going towards supporting Tate's medical and travel expenses.

The event starts at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, with teams competing in pool play to establish rankings for the single elimination bracket. Each team is assured at least three pool play games and one bracket game. Pool play matches are set to 15 points, requiring a win by two, while bracket games are best two out of three, played to 11 points, also requiring a win by two.

Teams will use Rock-Paper Scissors to decide the initial serve or court side. Self-officiating is expected, with the tournament director having the final say in disputes. All games will adhere to the USA Pickleball Official Rulebook, available for reference at the <a href="https://usapickleball.org/">USA Pickleball website</a>.

Prizes include $100 per team for winners in the men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles categories, and $50 for the beginner division champions.

Saline County Sheriff Deputy Lt. Mike Ascher and&nbsp;SFD Division Chief Andrew Sprague stopped by the 910 KINA radio Studio&nbsp; to share more about the event during the Saturday Morning Show on Sept. 21.

Ascher said in years past the organization hosted a friendly football competition between SFD and Saline County Sheriff's Office and SPD. The COVID-19 Pandemic caused the game to be canceled for 2020 and 2021, but why pickleball?

"It's just becoming so popular. I mean, there's YouTube channels, there's channels on TV that you can just watch pickleball tournaments," Sprague said. "It's fun to play if you've never played it. I tell you what it's not tennis, it's not racquetball, but it's a mixture. And it really is a blast."

Saline County Jail Bookings, Sept. 23

<a href="https://www.ncfhaaa.com/attendeeregistration">The North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging </a>(NC-FH AAA) is still taking registrations for the Sunflower Fair. The event is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at Tony’s Pizza Events Center in Salina. The cost is $25 which includes a sit-down banquet lunch.&nbsp;

The one-day event that focuses on topics and useful information for older Kansans, people living with disabilities and caregivers features expert speakers, 50 exhibitors, a sit-down lunch, prize drawings, live music and more.&nbsp;

“The Sunflower Fair is the premier health and wellness event for anyone planning to have more birthdays,” said NC-FH AAA executive director Julie Govert Walter.&nbsp; “We encourage all to attend and register before Sept. 18 so they will have a place at lunch, We will also welcome those who register the day of the Fair."

Thirteen workshops on topics including elder law, cybersecurity, healthful cooking and dementia and Alzheimer’s are offered in the morning and afternoon sessions. 

Exhibitors, including the Salina Regional Hospital will provide health screenings, COVID-19 and flu vaccines, hearing tests, blood pressure checks, Medicare information and other important health checks.

“Bob and Friends,” a trio of musicians that includes 102-year-old guitarist Bob Delk of Marion County, will provide toe-tapping music in the morning and at lunch time.

The Salina Regional Health Foundation is a major sponsor of the event. The Agency is accepting sponsors for workshops, exhibitors and donations for door prizes and items for the Silent Auction.

Every fall, seniors have the opportunity to evaluate and make important decisions about their Medicare coverage during the annual open enrollment period, which runs from October 15th to December 7th. While there are many plans to consider, your options essentially come down to two choices: Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage.

Original Medicare is a federally funded program that offers extensive access to healthcare providers across the nation. Beneficiaries can visit any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, ensuring that seniors can receive timely care, even in smaller or more rural communities. This flexibility can be critical, especially for those living in more rural areas where provider options are limited.

Medicare Advantage plans, on the other hand, are private insurance alternatives to Original Medicare. While they are required by law to cover all the services that traditional Medicare offers, these plans often operate within narrower networks of doctors and hospitals. Additionally, 99% of Medicare Advantage plans require prior authorization for certain services and medications, which can sometimes lead to delays in receiving necessary care.

This issue is particularly concerning for residents in rural areas. For example, Salina Regional Health Center, which serves more than 12,000 square miles of central and north central Kansas, provides critical access to healthcare in some of the state's most rural areas. Unfortunately, the restricted networks of many Medicare Advantage plans can limit access to care in these regions, disproportionately affecting the seniors who live there.

While Medicare Advantage plans may appear more affordable due to their lower premiums, it’s important to understand the full picture. These plans often come with additional costs, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. A recent Kaiser study revealed that nearly half of all Medicare Advantage enrollees pay more for a seven-day hospital stay than those covered by Original Medicare.

As we approach this year’s open enrollment, I strongly encourage seniors and their families to carefully consider their options. Contact your local healthcare providers and hospital to see how a Medicare Advantage plan might impact your access to care. TOPEKA, Kan. – Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information Services (LMIS) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.3% in August. This is an increase from 3.2% in July and an increase from 2.6% in August 2023, according to a media release.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment was unchanged from July. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 3,500 over the month, while government increased by 3,500.

The unemployment rate in Saline County remained at 3.5 percent from July to August.&nbsp;&nbsp;Dickinson County saw their jobless rate increase from 4.3 to 6 percent in August.

“Estimates for nominal hourly earnings in the private sector have increased in Kansas,” said labor economist, Emilie

Doerksen. “In August nominal earnings growth exceeded inflation rates, resulting in a 2.6% increase in real hourly earnings compared to last year.”

Since August 2023 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 20,000. Saline County Jail Bookings, Sept. 21

CLOUD COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30p.m. Friday in Cloud County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Chevy Tracker driven by&nbsp;Hayden, Brandon L&nbsp;Hayden, 22, Beloit, was westbound on U.S. 24 just west of 110th Road. The SUV traveled left of center and the driver overcorrected.&nbsp; The vehicle entered the north ditch, struck an embankment and and rolled onto its top.

EMS transported&nbsp;Hayden to&nbsp; Bryan Memorial Center West in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

CLOUD COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 12:30p.m. Friday in Cloud County.The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Chevy Tracker driven by&nbsp;Hayden, Brandon L&nbsp;Hayden, 22, Beloit, was westbound on U.S. 24 just west of 110th Road. The SUV traveled left of center and the driver overcorrected.&nbsp; The vehicle entered the north ditch, struck an embankment and and rolled onto its top.EMS transported&nbsp;Hayden to&nbsp; Bryan Memorial Center West in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

SALINE COUNTY —Strong winds and storms swept across Kansas Friday causing hazardous conditions on the roadways. 

Kansas Highway Patrol Master Trooper Van Buren responded to a semi that was blown over on Interstate 70 near the Brookville/Tescott exit in Saline County, according to a social media report.

 Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. According to KHP trooper Ben Gardner, "This is a reminder of how quickly weather can impact driving. If you’re traveling, please slow down and be cautious in windy conditions. Stay safe, Kansas."

Kansas weather can be tough on the trees in our local landscapes. Many local homeowners, particularly those who lost trees during the late July windstorm that hit Salina, are now considering replacements. Early fall is an ideal time to plant new trees.

One advantage of fall planting is that soil temperatures are warmer, encouraging quicker root growth compared to the cooler spring soils. Trees planted in the fall can establish themselves more quickly, making them better prepared for the heat stress of the following summer.

Regardless of when a tree is planted, it is essential to follow proper planting procedures to give trees the best chance of survival. Many tree deaths can be attributed to mistakes made during the planting process.

Planting at the right time is important. Evergreen trees and shrubs should be planted sooner rather than later in the fall, as they need 5-6 weeks to establish before the first killing frost. Deciduous trees, which lose their leaves, can be planted later, but planting earlier allows them to benefit from warmer soil temperatures.

Avoid planting trees too deep. A common mistake is planting trees too deep, which can cause long-term root problems. The planting hole should be dug two to three times wider than the rootball, but slightly shallower than the rootball itself. The first root flare should be at ground level.

Containerized trees often have circling roots, which can cause girdling, where roots grow around and damage the trunk. These roots should be pruned or teased apart during planting to prevent future issues.

It’s important to use the original soil to backfill the planting hole. Avoid adding compost or other organic materials to the soil, as amending only the planting hole can disrupt water movement and slow root establishment.

Mulching the root zone with 2-4 inches of organic mulch helps protect the tree and promotes its establishment. However, the mulch should be kept away from the trunk to prevent disease and rodent damage.

Using tree wraps or guards on newly planted trees can help prevent cracking caused by winter temperature fluctuations. Additionally, staking may be necessary for taller or leggy trees.

Consistent watering is critical for newly planted trees. Regular watering should continue throughout the year, even during winter on warm days. The tree should be watered when the rootball begins to dry out, but overwatering should be avoided.

KSRE — Early Fall a prime time to plant trees

Memorial Health System’s Heartland Health Care Clinic (HHCC) location in Herington continues to make progress toward serving all patients in the Tri-County area,&nbsp;thanks to some assistance from&nbsp;U.S.&nbsp;Senator Roger Marshall’s Salina office.&nbsp;

After months of building and planning HHCC – Herington, located at 18 N Broadway, was able to open its doors to patients on May 13, 2024. &nbsp; “Opening a healthcare clinic is a lengthy process, and it’s not&nbsp;always&nbsp;easy to communicate those steps with the general public. &nbsp;We have tried to provide updates that are small wins for us, but to the patients who are waiting for healthcare, those wins mean very little if they can’t get the care they need,” said Harold Courtois, CEO of Memorial Health System (MHS). &nbsp;

A week after the abrupt closing of the Herington Hospital in October of 2023, MHS was in Herington seeking opportunities to help keep some form of healthcare in that area for the residents, and by December, renovations began on a building that would serve as the new clinic. &nbsp;

Although the doors officially opened on May 13, HHCC-Herington was unable to serve a majority of the patients in that area. &nbsp; “We were only able to see patients with Blue Cross Blue&nbsp;Shield Kansas, Allegiance, MultiPlan, and Aetna&nbsp;Commercial&nbsp;plans,” stated Karysa Reyer, Director of Clinic Operations. &nbsp;“Unfortunately, that didn’t help the community very much,&nbsp;as the majority of the population held Medicare and Medicaid, so we started a call-back list, ensuring those patients that we would get them called back just as soon as we were able to accept those insurance plans.”

MHS held the grand opening ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 28, although the wait for credentialing was still in full effect. “As time continued to pass,&nbsp;and the list continued to reach over a hundred patients, we decided to ask for some help,” said Reyer. &nbsp;“Senator Roger Marshall’s staff in the Salina office were instrumental in helping to get some forward movement with the credentialing process so that we could start seeing more patients. &nbsp;We seriously cannot thank them enough for their assistance,&nbsp;and we are so excited to share some good news with the Herington community!”

“I applaud Memorial Health&nbsp;System&nbsp;for stepping up to fill the healthcare needs of the&nbsp;Herington&nbsp;community,” said U.S. Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. “Since coming to&nbsp;Congress, I have&nbsp;prioritized supporting our rural healthcare providers and efforts&nbsp;like this are one of many&nbsp;ways&nbsp;my office can help our rural providers and ensure all Kansans&nbsp;have&nbsp;access to basic&nbsp;healthcare&nbsp;services.”
