There is no charge to participate, and the hunt lasts until July 27.

Families love joining the scavenger hunt to find the iconic children’s book character, with his red-and-white-striped shirt and black glasses, hidden in twenty-five local downtown businesses.&nbsp; Find Waldo Local is a wonderful way to support the Shop Local movement by increasing foot traffic to a variety of stores.

To join in the fun, people can simply pick up a “Find Waldo Local in&nbsp;Salina!” stamp card at Red Fern Booksellers. With each miniature Waldo they spot, searchers get their card stamped or signed by the participating shop. 

Eagle-eyed hunters can also look for Waldo’s special 2024 gold medal hidden in&nbsp;Red Fern Booksellers!&nbsp;Collecting store stamps or signatures at twenty or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers to enter into a grand prize drawing for Waldo books and other prizes. All participants are welcome to attend the celebration party at&nbsp;Red Fern Booksellers&nbsp;on&nbsp;Saturday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Martin Handford’s collections of crowd scenes took the world by storm in the late 1980s, and since then the books have held a cherished place on bookstore shelves, in family libraries, and in classrooms around the world. More than 80 million Waldo books have been sold worldwide, and they’ve been translated into over thirty&nbsp;languages.

Red Fern in Salina invites public to downtown scavenger hunt

<a></a><a>&nbsp;</a><a>The rodeo that Jean Book has attended since she was a kid, is now helping her in a round-about way.</a>

When Book was diagnosed with cancer in 2019, she received help from the Elsie Brooks Memorial Cancer Fund of Dickinson County. The fund, created in 1991, provides financial assistance to any Dickinson County resident undergoing cancer treatment.

The Wild Bill Hickok Rodeo has partnered with the fund since 2008, through its Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign, asking fans to wear pink for one night of rodeo.

Book, a teacher, retired after 35 years in the profession. She spent most of her career in the Abilene and Chapman schools. Two years after retiring in 2017, she was diagnosed with colon cancer.

After six months of treatment, including twelve chemotherapy sessions, Book was free of cancer for two years. Then doctors found spots in her lungs in 2022, and she’s been doing chemotherapy treatments since then.

The cancer is slow growing, she has been told, and she will be taking chemo treatments the rest of her life.

“It wasn’t something on my radar for my retirement, but since it’s here, we deal with it, go about life, and enjoy it," Book said.

The Elsie Brooks Cancer Fund has provided financial help for Book in making the regular trips to the doctor in Manhattan. Growing up in Dickinson County, Book attended the rodeo as a youngster. Book's mom was a 4-H leader, and she and her siblings were involved with the fair and went to the rodeo.

When she married Glenn, they continued that tradition. They used to go to all four nights of rodeo, but now it’s just a couple shows.

Book and Glenn have a daughter, Sarah Stalder, and a son, Michael Ade, six granddaughters, and just a few months ago, were blessed with a little great-granddaughter.

Knowing she has cancer is daunting, but Book isn’t discouraged.

“You know who wins the battle in the end,” Book said. “Whatever God has planned is just fine.”

She is thankful for the Elsie Brooks Memorial Cancer Fund.

“It’s really a gift to the community, to have an organization that is able to reach out and touch people. They reached out to me, and that meant a lot. I appreciate the fund and its contribution to the county," Book said.&nbsp;

The Abilene rodeo hosts its annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink night at the rodeo on Thursday, August 1,&nbsp;partnering with the Elsie Brooks Fund to raise money through voluntary donations. In the past sixteen years, the rodeo has raised over $45,000 for the fund.

The Elsie Brooks Fund has assisted its clients more than 1,700 times. Rodeo tickets are available online at <a href="http://WildBillHickokRodeo.com">WildBillHickokRodeo.com</a>, West’s Country Mart, other area retailers, and at the gate.

Seven&nbsp;Central Kansas Extension District (CKD) 4-H BB Gun Team members traveled to Rogers, Arkansas to compete in the 2024 Daisy National BB Gun Championship Match on June 30 through July 3. To participate at the national event, teams must have placed in the top three at a state qualifier earlier in the year.

In total, there were 380 youth representing 57 teams from 13 different states. Those making the trip from CKD were Callan Rensink of Minneapolis, Landon Wisbey, Troy Wisbey and Traven Dotson of Bennington, J.J. Riedel of Salina, and Andrew Knopf and Gauge Fritz of Gypsum. This is the second year in a row CKD has had a team qualify for the national match.

The youth showcased their skills in several positions including Prone (laying down), Standing, Kneeling, and Sitting. They also took a 100-point written exam over firearm safety, marksmanship, national rules and guidelines, and match information. Combined scores from the four positions and test made up their Aggregate Score.

While CKD did not make the podium, the team did achieve a season high Aggregate Score. Under the Daisy-NRA process, six members shot or tied their season high in Prone, three in Standing, four in Sitting, five in Kneeling, five scored their personal best on the exam, and four had their highest individual Aggregate Score of the year.

The Daisy Nationals has been held since 1966, making it one of the longest-running youth shooting competitions in the country.

Saline County Jail Bookings, July 9

A 71-year-old Salina resident reported to Salina Police Department (SPD) officers that on Saturday afternoon, someone robbed him near the entrance of Walmart.

SPD Capt. James Feldman said the man reported the incident on Sunday, July 7, and told officers that two individuals approached him while he was leaving the large store.

"He was approached by a Hispanic male and female in their 40s. They stated he had dropped a $20 bill — he advised that he didn't realize it at the time, but he felt that the subjects were trying to distract him," Feldman said. "He told the subjects he did not believe he had $20 on him. The male suspect told him to check his wallet, at which point the 71-year-old opened his wallet, and there was some type of exchange."

Feldman said the man described the interaction loosely, but the 71-year-old resident said the suspect handed him a $20 bill and left the store. 

At 4:45 p.m. Sunday, the victim reported that his bank notified him that someone used his credit card to purchase a ring for more than $2,000 at Sam's Club. He then checked his wallet and found his credit card and the $20 bill the man handed him missing.

Someone later attempted to use his credit card for a smaller purchase in Wichita.

The resident then contacted SPD officers to report the incident. Feldman said the suspects' reported appearances are a 6'1" heavyset Hispanic man with a black beard and a Hispanic woman wearing a flower dress. Both appeared to be around 40 years old.

SPD officers continue investigating the alleged robbery.

SPD searches for suspects after resident reports he was robbed at Walmart

MCPHERSON, Kan. — In less than a year, McPherson College will open the doors to its new 55,000-square-foot landmark structure at the entrance to campus. The Campus Commons, currently under construction, is the centerpiece of a significant campus update, including two other new buildings. U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (KS) recently visited McPherson College and viewed the construction progress firsthand. The ongoing construction represents the largest-ever single investment in new buildings in the college's 137-year history.

The Campus Commons will serve as a hub for students with new dining, coffee shop, campus store, student clubs, activities and lounge spaces. The upper levels will contain student services, administrative offices, and a welcome center for events and gatherings.

The Boiler House and Holman Sport Center expansion are two additional major projects funded partly by a successful $55 million campaign. The Boiler House, a new campus café in the middle of campus with indoor and outdoor seating, will be completed in August 2024. The Holman Sport Center project, which features more than 4,500 square feet of added space and renovation of another 2,000 square feet, was completed in February 2024.

"We are changing the face of our campus in a way that puts the needs of our students first and provides them with a better academic and social life," said McPherson College President Michael Schneider. "The new Campus Commons is at the forefront of a campus redesign, moving McPherson College away from the traditional residential campus to a modern living community."

The prairie-inspired design of the new Campus Commons features two main entrances and numerous large windows that offer beautiful views of the prairie from the third floor. With a nod to the college's acclaimed Automotive Restoration program, the three-story atrium will include a chassis of a classic car suspended from the ceiling. Clearly seen when exiting I-135 into McPherson, the new building changes the landscape of the campus and community. The Campus Commons, currently under construction, is the centerpiece of a significant campus update, including two other new buildings. U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (KS) recently visited McPherson College and viewed the construction progress firsthand. The ongoing construction represents the largest-ever single investment in new buildings in the college's 137-year history.The Campus Commons will serve as a hub for students with new dining, coffee shop, campus store, student clubs, activities and lounge spaces. The upper levels will contain student services, administrative offices, and a welcome center for events and gatherings.The Boiler House and Holman Sport Center expansion are two additional major projects funded partly by a successful $55 million campaign. The Boiler House, a new campus café in the middle of campus with indoor and outdoor seating, will be completed in August 2024. The Holman Sport Center project, which features more than 4,500 square feet of added space and renovation of another 2,000 square feet, was completed in February 2024."We are changing the face of our campus in a way that puts the needs of our students first and provides them with a better academic and social life," said McPherson College President Michael Schneider. Moran visits ongoing construction at McPherson College

On Saturday, July 6, dozens of visitors attended the second year of the reestablished Daddy Bud Day at Pacific Park. Volunteers handed out free hotdogs and hamburgers and helped children and adults through various yard games and activities.

Daddy Bud Day was a yearly event started by the late John Curtis Sr., more commonly referred to as "Bud." The event was started in 1967 and originally served as a program that sponsored activities for youth and adults in the community.

Over the years, the event morphed into a community-wide activity during the Fourth of July weekend for African-Americans in Salina. The event contained free swimming at the former Carver Center pool, free food and drinks, paid for out of Bud's own pocket, vendors and an evening dance.

Bud's son, Salina pastor and musician John Curtis, Jr. took part in the events as the DJ. Part of Daddy Bud Day was eventually sponsored by his job, the former manufacturing plant, Wyatt Manufacturing.

After Curtis Sr.'s death in 1971, the tradition continued for a few more years, ultimately ending in 1974.

"Being able to bring it back in his memory and his honor is a really cool thing," said James Curtis, also known as Cash Hollistah, the grandson of John Curtis Sr. "In honoring him also, we're at Pacific Park, and we're leading efforts to actually rename that park, Curtis Park."

At the time of the final Bud Day celebration, over 400 people were in attendance. In 2014, he was posthumously awarded a Juneteenth Award by the Salina Juneteenth Committee.

Daddy Bud Day was revived in 2023 by his grandson, James Curtis, also known as Cash Hollistah. 

This year, the event hosted its usual attractions alongside a basketball game that concluded the event at 2 p.m.

📸 Daddy Bud Day celebrates Salina's history and community

This is day 12 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is 92 percent complete, well ahead of 55 percent complete last year and 72 percent for the five-year average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending July 7, 2024. Northwest Kansas has the most remaining wheat to be cut at 70 percent harvested.

Kansas had widespread rain over the weekend, which kept harvest on Monday at a standstill for many areas. Still, the southwest area is about 91 percent complete and wrapping straggling fields after beginning harvest early - the first week of June compared to the normal Father’s Day start.&nbsp;

Lori Deyoe, grain originator with Skyland Grain, covers a wide swath of the western third of the state - from Leoti to the southern Kansas border and from the western border with Colorado to Kismet. Based in Ulysess in Grant County, she reported good weather throughout the growing season. Snow in December made the crop and the cooler, wetter weather in May during filling finished it nicely - for those that received those rains.&nbsp;

She estimated taking in more than double the wheat from last year’s slap in the face. After thinking this year’s harvest would be sub-average, the final numbers look to hit average or maybe even a tick better. The wheat in the bins is headed via truck to the mills near Wichita, fulfilling demand within the state.&nbsp;

Yields range from 10 to 85 bushels per acre for dryland wheat and 85 to 115 bushels per acre on irrigated fields. Test weights started out tremendous above 60 pounds per bushel at the start of harvest, but after much-needed rains moved in have gone down. Proteins have been extremely regionalized ranging from 10 percent to above 12 percent.&nbsp;

“Everybody is extremely happy with their farm averages coming in from the field,” Deyoe said. “Everyone is ecstatic we’re getting the rains we’re getting, but wish we had been done with harvest before they started.”&nbsp;

The gully-washer on Saturday night will benefit fall crops, keeping producers delayed from the one or two cutting days needed to fully wrap up harvest. Farmers near Lakin would have finished Sunday or Monday and custom harvest crews are making quick work of remaining fields around Johnson. Last, but not least, irrigated fields north of Ulysses will likely be the last few to be cut.&nbsp;

Near Norton, Chris Tanner started cutting his WestBred Grainfield wheat on Monday, June 24, only to be delayed by rain the next day. They had been cutting a phenomenal crop with yields between 50 and 60 bushels per acre, strong test weights ranging from 59 to 63 pounds per bushel and great protein at 12 to 14 percent.&nbsp;

“We are in a sweet spot here,” Tanner said.&nbsp;

He credited an ideal growing season to good moisture throughout the year. Sufficient moisture at drilling meant the wheat came up early with well-established stands. In the spring, the wheat emerged from dormancy early, but in good shape and the luck continued.&nbsp;

While the weather was on-track, fertilizer prices were high, and Tanner noted he spent money on fungicide applications due to rust pressure. Producers did abandon some fields due to Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, which has been bad in the area, in addition to some yield loss from Barley yellow dwarf virus.&nbsp;

A couple of 1.5 inch rains and several smaller showers have decreased yields 10 to 12 percent, test weights down to 55 to 57 pounds per bushel and protein averaging in the mid-11s. Even with the rain detriment, the year should end above average by the time harvest wraps up by the end of this week.

This year’s harvest is in stark contrast to last year’s disaster when a lot of wheat in northern Norton County was abandoned due to drought. The residue from this year’s crop is some of the best Tanner has had in his career and will benefit his subsequent crops.&nbsp;

“The most exciting part of this year’s harvest is the residue,” Tanner said. “The most disappointing part is the price.”

Day 12, Kansas Wheat Harvest Report

Late into the day on Sunday, July 7, multiple residents at Hawthorne Park on North Ninth Street reported that a man yelled profanities at children and allegedly pushed someone while at the park.

Salina Police Department (SPD) Capt. James Feldman said multiple witnesses saw 33-year-old Salina resident Hunter Bowen enter the park and become disorderly at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday. 

Once officers arrived, they first spoke with a 20-year-old Salina woman and her children at the park, who interacted with Bowen.

"Mr. Bowen approached the female, began yelling at her and her children profane, derogatory remarks, putting the female subject in fear," Feldman said. "Mr. Bowen then approached a 20-year-old male who was in the park and pushed him multiple times and threatened to kill him."

Feldman said multiple witnesses observed Bowen's conduct at the park. After gathering information from these witnesses, SPD officers found him in the park shortly after.

Officers then arrested Bowen and requested charges of criminal threat, battery and disorderly conduct. Feldman said that SPD officers did not find evidence of intoxication.

Multiple witnesses report man for yelling profanities at Hawthorne Park

Salina Police Department (SPD) officers reported to a residence in the 1200 block of Cloud Circle Saturday evening, where they met a woman with blood stains on her shirt and bloody nose — she reported that a man attacked her and threatened to kill her shortly before they arrived.

Just after 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, SPD officers reported to the residence on Cloud Circle after the 21-year-old woman called for help in the home.

"She indicated that while at the residence, she got into a disturbance with a Christian Lasso Olivas," said SPD Capt. James Feldman. "Christian became upset with the female and began yelling at her. He then got on top of her and began strangling her. He kept telling her that he was going to kill her and her family."

Feldman said the victim was able to push the 20-year-old Lasso Olivas off of her, but he then dragged her into another room and pushed her onto the bed. There, he allegedly continued the verbal assault and began striking her in the face.

The victim reported that on the bed, Lasso Olivas began strangling the victim again and threatened to kill her and her family. 

"She [the victim] attempted to get away from him — he then put a pillow on top of her head and pushed her into the bed," Feldman said. "As she was bleeding, she was able to ask if she could clean up the blood, he said no. She tried to get away from him but was able to keep her in the room. She then was able to get away into the kitchen where she grabbed a knife to protect herself."

Lasso Olivas had possession of the victim's phone, so the victim demanded that he return the phone to her, which he refused. He allegedly threatened to kill her again if she called the police.

Feldman said Lasso Olivas then reached for the victim, and she slashed the knife on his hand, causing a small cut. This caused Lasso Olivas to drop the victim's phone, allowing her to call 9-1-1 for assistance. 

"Officers were able to take him into custody without incident," Feldman said.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Salina Regional Health Center to care for her injuries, but the cut on Lasso Olivas' hand did not require medical attention.

Officers then booked Lasso Olivas into the Saline County Jail. They requested charges for attempted voluntary manslaughter, three counts of aggravated domestic battery, aggravated kidnapping, criminal threat, domestic battery and criminal deprivation of property.

Hello and happy Monday, everybody, it’s&nbsp;Tyler&nbsp;Henry, back with another KINA Sports Update presented by Salina Regional Orthopedic and Sports Medicine.

Over the weekend the Salina Liberty pulled out a dramatic, late-game finish, fending off the Southwest Kansas Storm to punch their ticket to the AFL semifinals.

With a 41-35 victory, the Liberty secure a date with the Albany Firebirds in New York next Saturday at 1:30 CST while the Storm see their season draw to a close at 4-6.

The defense that Salina had hung it’s hat on all season long was immaculate once again, forcing four turnovers and three sacks in the win.

Charles McCullum had a great day under center as well, completing 47% of his passes for 164 yards, three touchdowns and only one pick.

Sunday also saw Maikel Garcia, MJ Melendez and Bobby Witt Jr. homere, and Brady Singer win for the first time on the road this season as the Kansas City Royals beat the Colorado Rockies 10-1 on Sunday to end a three-game losing streak.

And finally, speaking of KC on Sunday four Royals were named to the AL All-Star Roster, as Salvador Perez, Bobby Witt Jr, Seth Lugo and Cole Ragans will all participate in the Texas Festivities

&nbsp;In its mission to become a leading institution for aerospace and technology talent development,&nbsp;<a href="http://salina.k-state.edu/">Kansas State University Salina</a>&nbsp;has appointed Tysen Pina as the new department head of aviation.

As the department head, Pina will oversee the aviation program, focusing on expanding industry-relevant academic offerings, strengthening alumni and industry partnerships, enhancing safety management and strategically positioning the program for future success.

Having retired from the U.S. Air Force, Pina brings more than 21 years of aviation experience. His expertise spans program management, process improvement, strategic planning, aviation training and leadership. Pina plans to leverage K-State Salina's rich aviation history of excellence and build upon the foundation that has already been laid over the past 33 years under the Kansas State University system and previously, with the campus leading in aviation training since the 1960s.

"My heart is in all things aviation, building organizations and pouring into people and making them better every day," said Pina. "I knew that once my time in the Air Force was over, I knew I wanted to be in aviation. When I first met the K-State Salina faculty, their connection and excitement really shone through. This campus and the spirit that it has really motivated me."

Additionally, as the aviation industry continues to see major transitions in its hiring practices, needs and criteria, K-State Salina is committing itself to supporting all learners through educational offerings that will set its students up to impact the industry.

His distinguished Air Force career includes roles such as commander for the 966th Airborne Air Control Squadron with E-3G AWACS aircraft; director of operations for 16th Airborne Command and Control Squadron with E-8C JSTARS aircraft, wing inspector general with the 116th Air Control Wing; regional engagement strategist for Air Force Central Command in Qatar; and assistant director of operations for the 422nd Test and Evaluation Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base.

Pina has flown over 100 combat missions. After having moved more than 12 times for his career, he is ecstatic to be able to call Salina home for a long time.

OTTAWA COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just before 4p.m. Sunday in Ottawa County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Chevy Suburban driven by Dana Dramse, 47, Grand Island, Nebraska was northbound on U.S. 81 ten miles south of Minneapolis. The Suburban was following a 2023 Toyota Camry driven by Bridget Jeannette&nbsp;Omotosho, 57, Fort Worth Texas.

The Camry was in the driving lane. The Suburban changed lanes to pass the Camry and the Camry changed lanes as well.

The SUV made an avoidance maneuver to avoid striking car but was unable to do so and a crash occurred.

A passenger in the SUV Michelle Dramse, 48, Grand Island, Nebraska, was transported to Salina Regional Health Center. The drivers and three other passengers in the Suburban were not injured. All were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

NWS Wichita three-day forecast for Salina

In the early 1900s, electricity swept across the country, bringing light bulbs, telecommunications and other luxuries to high-end homes and businesses — today, electricity is in almost every building, even public restrooms at local parks.

What was once considered a luxury became a household necessity by the mid-1900s, and by the end of the 20th century, many office workers began using the internet for daily job functions.

Most employers, schools and government organizations expect residents to have access to the internet, but a recent Saline County broadband survey found that many in the rural areas of the county don't have reliable access to internet services.

"Fiber really is the end goal for really, every house and business in America. I like to say fiber future-proofs the community," said Jack Maytum, a senior broadband analyst at Design Nine, Inc. "A lot of providers would have you think that that's wishful thinking, but think about electricity in the 1920s and 30s. Electricity was considered a luxury, now it's a necessity. Virtually every structure in the country has electricity, so why not fiber?"

Fiber optic cable allows high-capacity telecommunications to travel at high speeds, including multiple types of internet, cable television and phone services.

Unlike copper or other metal cables, glass threads carry pulses of light rather than electricity to transmit different types of information. Maytum informed the forum attendees that due to fiber optic's unique design, it has enough capacity to last for decades.

"One of the things we get asked a lot is, 'Well, isn't there going to be something better than fiber?' and we don't think there is going to be," said Andrew Cohill, the president of Design Nine. "The wonderful thing about fiber is you can expand the capacity of fiber by changing the equipment on each end of the fiber cable."

Throughout the last week of June, Saline County staff hosted multiple broadband forums targeted at different parts of the Saline County community, with one focusing on its residents on Tuesday, June 25, at the Salina Public Library Technology Center.

Design Nine presented a preliminary survey data analysis to forum attendees and answered questions about the broadband survey.

About a dozen Saline County residents and representatives visited the forum and shared their biggest challenges with internet access.

Saline County Public Information Officer Melissa McCoy began the community forum with some brief information about the Community Broadband Assessment before turning to Maytum and Cohill from Design Nine.

Cohill asked each attendee to share their names, their general location in Saline County and what internet provider they used in the home.

Most attendees either had poor access to reliable internet or were concerned about those in the community with limited access.

Tim Unruh, a local freelance journalist, and his wife use an internet hotspot service through their phone company for the two small businesses they operate from their home, but it regularly fails them when attempting normal business operations.

"My wife is a travel nurse and we both run teeny tiny small businesses out of our home and we live in this black hole, and we've tried. We've had companies come out and they said, 'Sure, we'll do that if you put up a $10,000 tower outside of your home," Unruh said. "For us, it's not a toy. I'm sure we may stream a show or something, but it's not about that. It's, we really need it. It's essential."

Unruh said that once he uses up the data provided with his phone plan each month, he has to work from coffee shops or other public locations with internet access.

Other residents shared similar stories, with one commenting on how an internet service said she had too many trees surrounding her house, preventing the signal from reaching her rural property.

A common question that many of the attendees asked was, "Why do some places have good access while others don't?" which Maytum said it usually has to do with making the most cash in more populated areas.

"Local providers tend to stay local, but the big companies will take that money oftentimes and go into places unless they are subsidized by somebody's federal government or state government."Maytum and Cohill agreed that this was a driving factor for why many national internet providers have not moved into rural areas. The Design Nine team showed preliminary survey results that reflected this with the distribution of internet access across the county.One of the benefits Maytum shared about providing reliable broadband access is that it kept young residents in a community, providing the area with new young workers for further economic development.The Design Nine assessment found that broadband providers could generate more than $475 million in revenue over 30 years by investing in Saline County. With that information, alongside the data found by the community survey, Maytum and Cohill said it can help attract further broadband infrastructure development.A map showed that many residents in the cities of Salina and Gypsum had access to the internet with fast download speeds, while other parts of the county showed limited or no access to internet providers.Local Salina leaders, such as Saline County Administrator Phil Smith-Hanes, K-State Research and Extension Salina District Director Cade Rensink and Salina City Mayor Bill Longbine, attended the forum.Saline County residents can take the survey by visiting the <a href="https://myemail-api.constantcontact.com/Help-us-improve-Broadband-access-in-Saline-County-.html?soid=1135102872917&amp;aid=GuFHJCGsX-Q">Saline County website</a>.
