MANHATTAN – Almost overnight, we went from the drab, brown tones of winter to lush, green vegetation across much of the Plains. And the plants aren’t the only living things that are thriving.

“In my experience this is the earliest we’ve had tick issues,” said Kansas State University entomology professor, Raymond Cloyd, who said he fielded more calls and emails about ticks earlier than usual this spring.

While it’s hard to know for sure if there are more ticks than normal, Cloyd, a veteran specialist with K-State Research and Extension, said the cool, rainy weather in parts of Kansas and other states, followed by a quick profusion of plant growth may have boosted the tick population.

Ticks tend to flourish when vegetation flourishes, especially in weeds and unmanaged areas. To minimize the number of ticks on your property, he said it’s best to keep lawns mowed and generally reduce unmanaged areas where weeds can flourish.

“I am not a proponent of blanket (insecticide) sprays in the yard,” Cloyd said.

•When outdoors, wear repellents based on DEET or permethrin. Permethrin-based products, however, must not be applied directly to the skin.

•Tuck your pant legs into your socks. White socks are best because it’s easier to see ticks on them.

•After coming in from potentially tick-infested areas, inspect your or your children’s skin and remove ticks immediately. Also, check pets that were outdoors.

•Take a shower as soon as possible after coming indoors.

•If you find a tick that’s already embedded, gently pull it out with tweezers, including the head. A tick head broken off and left in the skin can potentially lead to an infection.

The most common ticks found in Kansas include the American dog tick, Lone star tick, the Brown dog tick and the black-legged tick.

Because some ticks carry pathogens such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever or Lyme disease, it’s a good idea to have them identified if they were embedded in the skin. The resources to do that, however, will soon shrink in Kansas.

Due to budget cuts, the Insect Diagnostic Lab at K-State will close on June 16 and the “Gotbugs” email address will not be monitored. Kansans can continue to submit samples to their county or district K-State Research and Extension agriculture agent, but the staff available to help with insect identification will be reduced, so turnaround times will take longer, Cloyd said.

Sudden flush of plant growth has ticks flourishing

Seven small earthquakes have rattled parts of Dickinson and Saline counties in the past few days, according to the Kansas Geological Survey (KGS).

A 2.2 magnitude quake struck southeast of Salina at 2:34 a.m. Wednesday and was centered north-northeast of the intersection of South Simpson Road and Mentor Road, according to KGS.

Later in the morning, a 2.4 magnitude quake struck a bit south of the first temblor at 10:41 a.m. Wednesday and was centered east-southeast of the intersection of South Simpson Road and Mentor Road, KGS noted.

At 8:05 p.m. Thursday, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck northeast of Hope in Dickinson County and was centered on 1000 Avenue just east  of Quail Road, KGS reported.

Shortly after, at 8:28 p.m. Thursday, a magnitude 2 quake struck north-northwest of the first Dickinson County quake and was centered just southwest of the intersection of 1200 Avenue and Quail Road, according to KGS.

Later Thursday night, at 10:22 p.m., a 2.1 earthquake struck near the location of the first Dickinson County quake and was centered just north of 1000 Avenue between Quail Road and Rain Road, KGS noted.

Then early this morning, a 2.2 magnitude quake rattled part of Saline County at 1:05 a.m. and was centered southwest of the intersection of East Farrelly Road and South Simpson Road, KGS reported.

At 2:34 a.m. this morning, a magnitude 2 quake rattled part of Dickinson County and was centered just northwest of Herington, according to KGS.

Police provide update on case that sent Salina woman to a Wichita hospital

Police are investigating two cases of arson that occurred early this morning in north Salina.

Shortly after midnight, officers and firefighters were dispatched to the 700 block of North Fifth Street for the report of a vehicle fire, said Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester. When they arrived, they saw flames coming from the rear passenger side of a 1998 Chevrolet Astro van belonging to Victor Davis, 64, of Salina, he said. 

The Salina Fire Department determined that the fire was arson, Forrester said.

The van, valued at $1,000, was a total loss, he said.

While officers were finishing up with that case, they were notified of another fire in the 800 block of North Third. When they arrived, they found a 1976 white and orange Winnebago recreational vehicle (RV) fully engulfed in flames, Forrester said. That vehicle, valued at $3,000, was a total loss, he said.

A nearby 1986 Winnebago RV also caught fire but was not destroyed, Forrester said. Damage was estimated at $1,500, he said.

Both RVs were the property of Marselino Costello, 83, of Salina, Forrester said.

The Salina Fire Department also ruled this case as arson, he said.

Forrester said that police are trying to determine whether several gas cans found in the middle of the street in the 700 block of South Broadway were connected to the two arson cases. One of the cans was half full and the others were full, he said.

UPDATE: During the Salina Police Department media briefing this morning, we were told that Chief Brad Nelson's statement below was not in response to the planned peaceful protest scheduled for noon Saturday at the Salina Police Department. The statement was in response to rumors of other protests, some purported to be violent and some circulating through multiple counties in the area.

The following is from a post on the Salina Police Department Facebook page Thursday night from Chief Brad Nelson.

I want to address recent rumors about future protest here in our city. I can assure you we have heard these rumors, primarily via social media, and we have prepared accordingly.

I just want all to please understand that in our U.S. population of 325 million, we ALL deserve due process once accused of a crime, including law enforcement officers.

Four Minneapolis police offices are facing criminal charges as a result of the death of George Floyd on the streets of Minneapolis&nbsp;on May 25th, 2020. I have previously spoke of my opinion regarding the death of Mr. Floyd and my opinion remains the same.

Each officer will face a jury of 12 citizens who will decide their fate but it will not happen as expeditiously as most prefer but, a verdict will occur.

Can we please as a nation and as Salina citizens just take a deep breath and let justice prevail?

Local, area students named to FHSU Deans Honor Roll

Kansas Wesleyan University student Jacob Lovell, who will enter his senior year this fall, has been named a recipient of the Maud Wyatt Recognition Scholarship by the Kansas Independent College Foundation (KICF). 

Lovell was one of 20 award winners recognized by the KICF, as each member institution nominates an outstanding student from within its ranks.

Lovell is a Biomedical Chemistry major from nearby Junction City, who has been on the honor roll multiple times during his time at KWU. He has served as a resident advisor (RA, a captain on the track and field team and is the incoming president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Lovell hopes to enter medical school upon graduation.

The J.C. Penney store in Salina's Central Mall is one of the company's three stores in Kansas that are being closed.

The other Kansas locations are in Emporia and Liberal. The closings are a part of the company's store optimazation strategey and were announced today. 

"Following a comprehensive evaluation of its retail footprint and a careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the company, JCPenney identified the first phase of 154 store closures. Following entry of an order at the June 11, 2020, hearing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, in Corpus Christi, Texas, store closing sales will begin at 154 locations," the company noted in a news release issued today.

"The company expects additional phases of store closing sales will begin in the coming weeks. As the company remains focused on its Plan for Renewal and driving sustainable, profitable growth, it intends to reduce its store footprint and focus resources on its strongest stores and powerful eCommerce flagship store, jcp.com. Store closing sales for the first round of store closures are expected to take 10-16 weeks to complete," the news release continued.

J.C. Penney has been a a retail fixture in Salina for more than 100 years, first in downtown Salina and then as the south anchor store at Salina's Central Mall. Additionally, Sams Chapel at Kansas Wesleyan University is named in honor of the parents of E.C. Sams, who donated $25,000 toward the construction of the Pioneer Hall-Sams Chapel building. As an adult, E.C. Sams, who was from Simpson, Kan., became the business partner of James Cash Penney.

A 21-year-old Penney was on a Union Pacific train in the summer of 1897, headed for Colorado and a drier climate in the hopes of getting over "a nagging bronchial cough," David Delbert Kruger wrote in Earl Corder Sams and the Rise of J.C. Penney.

"As the train stopped in Salina, Penney could not have foreseen the impact a teenage farm boy in nearby Simpson would ultimately have on his future, not to mention the stores and company that would someday bear his name. And young Earl Corder Sams could never have imagined how much J. C. Penney, the man and eventually the company, would change his own life, much less the lives of countless Americans. A decade later, fate would bring these two young men together in Wyoming, creating a working synergy that would transform Penney’s fledgling enterprise from a two-store mercantile establishment out west to a national retailer headquartered in New York City, with over sixteen hundred department stores across the United States. In the end, Earl Corder Sams would become far more than a business partner to James Cash Penney: he would quietly lead the J. C. Penney Company on the path to becoming a national department store chain and recruit fellow Kansans to join him in its incredible ascension, while bringing a J. C. Penney department store to the main streets of eighty Kansas towns," Kruger wrote.

Despite longstanding history, J.C. Penney closing Salina store

Following is Saline County's COVID-19 update for Thursday.

The Health Department continues to actively monitor one case who is isolated at home. The rest have met the criteria necessary to be considered recovered and have been released from daily monitoring and isolation.

•Phase 3 is slated to begin on Friday, June 5th at 12:01 a.m. All businesses, events, and activities will be allowed to open and mass gatherings will be limited to 50 people or less with still following social distancing recommendations and disinfection guidelines. Phase Out is slated for June 19th.

Saline County Health Officer, Jason Tiller, stated, “For all of this to be successful, everyone has to do their part. Every individual has a responsibility and a choice to do what they feel is right.” Testing rates, COVID-19 patients who are hospitalized, the number of deaths, and our ability to do contact tracing are some of the many things that will go into decisions moving forward. Here is what you can do to help reach reopening milestones:

•Continue to follow the county restrictions in place

•Maximize physical distance (6 feet or more) in public settings

•Avoid socializing with large groups

•High-risk individuals should only leave the house for essential needs

•Check-in (via phone/letter/text/email) with friends and family who are isolated

Saline County: No new COVID-19 cases; Phase 3 begins Friday

TOPEKA&nbsp;– The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE, in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT, has issued public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae. A watch continues for Marion County Lake in Marion County, and a watch has been issued for Kanopolis Reservoir in Ellsworth County.

A watch means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

During the watch status, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

•Signage will be posted at all public access locations.

•Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.

•Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.

•Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.

•Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.

•Clean fish well with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

KDHE investigates publicly-accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

Kansans should be aware that blooms are unpredictable. They can develop rapidly and may float around the lake, requiring visitors to exercise their best judgment. If there is scum, a paint-like surface or the water is bright green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

Blue-green algae watches in place for Kanopolis, Marion County Lake

UPDATE noon Saturday: Apparently the event has been moved to Caldwell Plaza.

A peaceful protest is scheduled for Saturday in Salina.

The "Fight the Powers That Be" gathering is scheduled for noon Saturday at the Salina Police Department, 255 North 10th Street. Organizer Tony Evans said that all are welcome to attend what is being planned as a peaceful protest.

"Though the arrests were finally carried out, the amount of time it took for charges to be laid on the officers for the murder of George Floyd. It should not have to take a week of peaceful protest ending in violence and loss of more lives to have the system do its job."
